Counsellor Lutterodt freed from police custody

Marriage counsellor George Lutterodt has been released after being held by the Ghana Police Service for questioning over claims that he incited violence.

Reports that surfaced on March 9, 2026, indicated that the counsellor had been taken into custody after allegedly engaging in actions authorities believed could trigger unrest within the community.

Police said his conduct was considered capable of disrupting public order and peace.

After regaining his freedom, Counsellor Lutterodt shared a video explaining why he was seen in handcuffs during his detention.

“They told me they needed a picture, so they took a picture of me in handcuffs,” he said.

He also described his first stop after leaving the detention facility, expressing gratitude to God.

“When I left the detention centre, I came first to church, I walked to the altar to tell God thank you that my arrest was not anybody’s prayer point and I would not believe that whatever I went through was emanated by anybody,” Lutterodt stated.

His arrest followed controversial remarks he made publicly, in which he urged Ga youth to take pickaxes to a residence in East Legon and exhume the body of late highlife icon Daddy Lumba.

Police explained that the counsellor was picked up for allegedly encouraging violence and engaging in conduct likely to breach public peace, referencing provisions under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

In the remarks that sparked the controversy, Lutterodt had advised the youth not to wait for the police but to take action themselves.

  • IGP orders inquiry into alleged unauthorized GHS400k MoMo withdrawal by police

IGP orders inquiry into alleged unauthorized GHS400k MoMo withdrawal by police

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered an investigation into allegations that some police officers stationed at Kibi were involved in the unauthorised withdrawal of GH¢400,000 from a mobile money agent’s account.

The directive follows the circulation of a viral video on social media claiming that officers may have played a role in the transaction.

In response, the IGP has tasked the Ghana Police Service to refer the matter to its Police Professional Standards Bureau for a full investigation.

Police say the individual believed to be the victim has been contacted and is cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The Ghana Police Service has also assured the public that the investigation will be conducted professionally and transparently, adding that the outcome will be made public once the process is completed.

The development follows a complaint by a mobile money (MoMo) agent who alleged that some police officers attempted to take GH¢400,000 that passed through his account during a transaction linked to an ongoing investigation.

According to the agent, the issue began on December 11 last year when he realised that three SIM cards used for his mobile money business had been blacklisted.

He said he reported the matter to a nearby office of MTN Group, where checks reportedly indicated that the SIM cards had been flagged for investigations, although the reason was not explained to him.

The agent further claimed that shortly after the discovery, some officers from the Kumasi Central Police Station arrived at his MoMo stand and arrested him in connection with an alleged gold robbery case.

He explained that he was later handed over to a CID boss at the station for further questioning.

While at the station, he said police informed him that an individual had earlier visited his MoMo stand and transferred GH¢400,000 through the three SIM cards that were under investigation.

The agent has since expressed concern about how the case is being handled, alleging that some officers are attempting to take the money.

According to the complainant, the officers mentioned in connection with the matter include CID officer Francis Afedzi at Kibi, Crime Officer Osei, and other personnel from Tafo.

He is therefore calling for a proper investigation into the case to determine the origin of the funds and ensure due process.

Security concerns surrounding mobile money (MoMo) operations had previously been raised by a criminologist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware.

Dr. Opoku-Ware had warned that the way many MoMo vendors operate in open public spaces exposes them to criminal attacks. He explained that the common setup used by small-scale vendors — typically small containers, umbrellas, chairs and tables — makes their financial transactions visible to the public and increases their vulnerability.

“Those small containers and umbrellas with chairs and tables expose their transactions to the public. This is a form of banking, though small-scale, so it should be well covered,” Dr. Opoku-Ware emphasized. “They can get a shop and, if possible, have security on-site.”

He had also called on telecommunications companies to introduce stricter safety requirements for mobile money operators in order to protect vendors and their customers.

According to him, telecom companies should require MoMo vendors to prove that they operate from secured and enclosed spaces that meet basic safety standards.

“The telcos must ensure the vendors can prove they operate in a safe and confined space with adequate security measures in place,” he said. “MoMo is creating a lot of jobs and helping people with their transactions, so it should not be done in open spaces that expose vendors to criminals.”

His comments had come at a time when mobile money services were expanding rapidly across Ghana, offering convenient financial services to many people, particularly in remote communities. However, the growth had also been accompanied by increasing concerns about theft, fraud and attacks targeting vendors.

In one such case in 2023, a police officer, Ernest Agyemang Darko, who was attached to the National Visibility Unit, was arrested for his involvement in a mobile money fraud case.

According to a police situational report obtained by MyNewsGh.com, the officer visited the Kasoa branch of MTN Ghana on November 29, 2023, and conducted transactions amounting to GH¢14,460.

However, he failed to produce the corresponding cash after the transactions were completed. He was later taken to a branch of CBG Bank, where he claimed to hold an account, but the bank had already closed for the day.

The MoMo agent subsequently alerted nearby police officers, which led to his arrest.

In his caution statement, Constable Ernest Agyemang Darko admitted that he had neither cash on him nor funds in his bank account when he carried out the transactions.

He explained that he had proceeded with the transactions because he was under pressure from individuals he owed money to and had also suffered losses through betting.

Meanwhile, MTN had earlier warned against the illegal practice of splitting mobile money cash transactions and encouraged customers to report agents who engaged in such activities.

The company explained that it charges a fixed fee of GH¢10 for withdrawals of GH¢1000 and above at its service centres. However, some agents had been encouraging customers to split withdrawals into multiple transactions in order to collect additional charges.

For instance, a customer withdrawing GH¢3000 could be asked to carry out three separate withdrawals of GH¢1000 each, attracting a GH¢10 fee per transaction instead of a single GH¢10 charge.

Mawuena Agogo, Retail Experience Manager for the Eastern, Volta and Oti regions at MTN, had described the practice as illegal and urged customers to report such incidents to any MTN office or by dialing 100.

“Because such transactions are personal encounters, the system could not capture them, which is why we are urging clients to report them, so the necessary action is taken,” he said.

He added that some agents who had been reported had been sanctioned and ordered to refund the extra charges to affected customers.

Mr. Agogo had made the remarks during a meeting with informal sector clients at Akyem Tafo, where MTN officials engaged customers on fraud prevention and other challenges affecting mobile money users.

Participants at the forum raised several concerns, including high transaction charges, poor network connectivity and fraudulent activities on MoMo platforms.

One trader who attended the meeting complained that she had been charged GH¢40 when withdrawing GH¢4,000 after being asked by an agent to split the withdrawal into four separate transactions.

During the engagement, Georgina Asare-Fiagbenu, Senior Corporate Communications Manager at MTN, urged customers to remain vigilant and avoid responding to unsolicited offers or requests.

She also dismissed claims that MTN agents were directly involved in widespread fraud, explaining that the company’s large customer base often made its users targets for scammers.

“We have more customers than all others, so our customers are easily targeted,” she said.

Customers were therefore advised to exercise caution, as fraudsters could only succeed when individuals complied with their demands or instructions.

The forum also addressed issues such as mobile money education, Ayo insurance, network challenges and other services aimed at improving customer awareness and experience.

Police warn against violence in Ayawaso East election re-run

The Ghana Police Service Accra Regional Command has announced that it is fully ready to guarantee security ahead of, throughout, and after the parliamentary re-run in the Ayawaso East Constituency slated for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

In a statement issued on March 2, the Command indicated that enough officers have been stationed at all approved polling centres and strategic points within the constituency to safeguard the voting exercise and maintain order.

“The Command has deployed adequate Police personnel across all designated polling stations and key locations to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and orderly electoral process,” the statement signed by Supt Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, read in part.

Police officials further assured residents that officers would sustain strong visibility and carry out routine patrols before, during, and after voting to deter any attempts to disturb public safety.

The Regional Command also warned individuals against actions capable of compromising the credibility of the election.

“The Accra Regional Police Command cautions the public against engaging in acts of violence, intimidation, spreading misinformation, or any conduct that may undermine the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement warned.

It stressed that anyone who breaches the law will face legal consequences under the laws of Ghana, underscoring the Command’s resolve to apply the law impartially.

Security officials also called on qualified voters in the area to cast their ballots peacefully and to promptly alert authorities to any unusual or suspicious behaviour.

The re-run in Ayawaso East comes after recent events led to the need for a fresh parliamentary contest in the constituency.

The appeal for restraint and collaboration is being made as constituents gear up to vote on Tuesday.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal, is projected to win in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

According to a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics Baba Jamal will secure about 75% of the votes ahead of his main contender, Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Baba Ali has been projected to trail with 21%, independent candidate Umaru Sanda Muhammed is expected to poll 3% of the vote, with other remaining candidates, Ibrahim Iddrisu and David to garner less than 1%.

The survey was conducted between February 28 and March 1, sampling 972 voters across the constituency.

The EC has scheduled the Ayawaso East by-election for March 3, 2026, the by-election has attracted heightened attention in recent days amid internal developments within the NDC, including allegations of vote buying during its parliamentary primary.

Mr Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed won the Ayawaso East Constituency primary and is set to represent the NDC as its parliamentary candidate in the March 3 by-election, following the party’s internal primary held on February 7, 2026.

After the close of polls, provisional results showed that Baba Jamal polled 431 votes out of the total votes cast, followed by the widow of the late Ayawaso MP, Naser Toure Hajia Amina Adam who secured 399 votes. Mr Mohammed Ramne, the Ayawaso East NDC Constituency Chairman, placed third with 88 votes.

Dr Yakubu Azindow obtained 45 votes, while Mr Najib Mohammed Sani recorded one vote.

The closely contested primary attracted more than 1,100 accredited delegates from across the constituency, reflecting the high stakes involved in selecting a candidate for the by-election in a seat widely regarded as a stronghold of the governing NDC.

Five aspirants contested the race: Hajia Amina Adam, Mr Baba Jamal, Dr Yakubu Azindow, who had previously contested the late MP in the 2023 primary, Mr. Mohammed Ramne, and Mr Mohammed Sani.

Although the race was initially considered open, it later narrowed into a tight contest among Mr Jamal, Hajia Amina Adam and Dr Azindow.

Even though the election was peaceful on Saturday, reports of vote buying emerged on the eve of the election and on election day, involving some candidates, including Baba Jamal, who at the time was Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria and allegedly offered television sets and other items to delegates.

Videos circulating on social media showed some delegates leaving polling centres carrying television sets and other items.Reacting to the vote-buying allegations, the NDC, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, announced that it would investigate the allegations. It noted that a three-member committee had been set up to probe the matter.

In a statement issued on the same day, the NDC said its national executives had taken note of what it described as widespread incidents of inducement and vote buying allegedly perpetrated by some aspirants.

The party condemned the acts, describing them as an affront to its values and principles, and announced that it had launched investigations into the matter.

“In line with the Party’s commitment to internal democracy, transparency, and ethical political conduct, the Committee will investigate the allegations and make appropriate recommendations, including sanctions where necessary,” the statement said.

The Presidency has announced the recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, over voter inducement during the just-ended Ayawaso East primaries held on Saturday, February 7.

In a statement titled “President recalls Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria,” shared by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and dated February 7, it noted that “President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate recall of Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed (Baba Jamal) from his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The decision follows allegations of voter inducement during today’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency, in which Mr Baba Jamal, a candidate, participated.”

The President stressed that reports of vote buying were made against several candidates seeking to win the Ayawaso East seat, but Baba Jamal stood out because he was the only serving public officer at the time, making his case a peculiar one.

“In his directive to the Minister for Foreign Affairs recalling Mr Baba Jamal as High Commissioner, the President noted that while allegations of vote-buying were made against multiple candidates who contested the primaries, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them.”

Consequently, to protect the integrity of public office and to avoid any public suspicion of misconduct or violation of the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees, the President stated:

“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.”

The statement continued that “the recall takes effect immediately, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs has been directed to take the necessary administrative and diplomatic steps to give effect to this directive.”

  • IGP reshuffles top police command, assigns new roles to strengthen leadership, operations

IGP reshuffles top police command, assigns new roles to strengthen leadership, operations

A major reshuffle intended to enhance efficiency and improve police operations nationwide has been carried out in the top command of the Ghana Police Service.

The reshuffle, carried out on the orders of the IGP, was announced in a formal statement dated February 2 by the law enforcement agency and publicly released on February 3.

In the statement, the IGP reassigned several senior officers to various roles, ordering that the new roles take effect immediately.

The reshuffle affects Directors-General, Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCOPs), and regional commanders, to strengthen operations and improve service delivery nationwide.

    Under the new arrangement:

COP Dr Sayibu Pabi Gariba moves from Director-General in charge of Technology to head the National Administration and Professional Development (NAPD) directorate.

COP Iddi Lansah Seidu has been reassigned from Welfare to serve as Director-General for Technology.

COP Dr Vance Baba Gariba shifts from Operations to become Director-General for Research and Planning.

COP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe moves from the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to head Operations.

DCOP Darko Offei Lomotey leaves Research and Planning to take charge of the PPSB.

DCOP Eric Ken Winful moves from NAPD to oversee Welfare.
The reshuffle also affected regional and technical commands:

DCOP Charles K. Adu appointed Eastern Sector Regional Commander.

DCOP Isaac Asante transferred from the Eastern Region to the National Headquarters.

DCOP George B. Ohene Boadi now serves as Central Regional Commander.

DCOP George Ankomah moves from Central MTTD/Ashanti Region to become Eastern North Regional Commander.

DCOP Alex Kodjo Wowolo, formerly Director of ICT at the National Headquarters, now heads Central MTTD/Ashanti Region.

This top-rank reshuffle marks the first since his appointment on March 13 last year by President Mahama.

However, about a month after his appointment, he carried out a major reshuffle of police commanders stationed in areas notorious for illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, as part of the Ghana Police Service’s intensified campaign against the destructive activity.

The reshuffle, which primarily affected Divisional and District Commanders in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions, marked the first phase of a larger strategy aimed at revitalising the police response to illegal mining.

According to a police statement, “This reshuffle is part of a broader effort to ensure more effective policing in areas plagued by illegal mining,” adding that further changes are anticipated in the coming weeks.

In a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service titled Police Reshuffle Commanders in Galamsey Areas as It Intensifies Its War on Illegal Mining Activities, the Service reaffirmed the IGP’s commitment to fighting galamsey with renewed determination.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in keeping with his promise to wage a relentless war on illegal mining activities (galamsey), has reshuffled police commanders in galamsey-prone areas,” the statement read.

“This is said to be the first phase of the reshuffle exercise, as many more are expected to follow to inject fresh energy into the fight against illegal mining activities in the country,” it added.

Meanwhile, the police have made significant gains in their anti-galamsey operations. A special intelligence-led operation conducted over four consecutive days, beginning on April 17, 2025, in the Samreboi enclave in the Western Region, led to the arrest of 47 individuals involved in illegal mining activities.

The suspects, arrested along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests, include 39 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals, among them four women.

Exhibits retrieved during the operation include seventeen excavators, one bulldozer, four motorbikes, two Toyota Hilux vehicles, one RAV4 vehicle, four pump-action guns, one single-barrel gun, 54 live BB cartridges, and eight pumping machines.

Below is the full statement by the police:

POLICE RESHUFFLE COMMANDERS IN GALAMSEY AREAS AS IT INTENSIFIES ITS WAR ON ILLEGAL MINING ACTIVITIES

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in keeping with his promise to wage a relentless war on illegal mining activities (galamsey), has reshuffled police commanders in galamsey-prone areas.

This is said to be the first phase of the reshuffle exercise, as many more are expected to follow to inject fresh energy into the fight against illegal mining activities in the country.

Police commands affected include some Divisional and District Commanders, mainly in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North Police Regions.

In a related development, the Ghana Police Service has made a major breakthrough in its war against illegal mining (galamsey).

A special four-day continuous intelligence-led anti-galamsey operation, which started on April 17, 2025, within the Samreboi enclave in the Western Region, resulted in the arrest of 47 people for illegal mining activities along the Tano River and in the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forests of the Western Region.

The suspects comprise 39 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals, including four women.

  •  Ghana Police arrest 12 suspects in connection with separate highway robbery operations

Ghana Police arrest 12 suspects in connection with separate highway robbery operations

The Ghana Police Service has seven individuals in their grip over a highway robbery incident that took place last year on the Tamale–Buipe highway, during which a member of the Council of State was assaulted.

The suspects, identified as Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abaana, Wilson Abasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, Aminu Zibrilla, Innusa Sumaila and Haruna Safianu, were arrested on January 11, 2026, after weeks of sustained investigations.

Addressing the media at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, January 29, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that inquiries into the case are still ongoing.

She recounted that the incident occurred on July 21, 2025, when the victim was travelling on the Tamale–Buipe highway and was attacked by six armed men who fled with several personal items, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, laptops and other valuables.

“The arrests form part of intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling highway robbery networks across the country,” COP Donkor said.

She also revealed that a separate police operation led to the arrest of five suspects linked to another robbery incident at Nkasei in the Ahafo Region.

According to her, the suspects — Muta Kofi, Mahamadu Sajoe, alias Salifu, Shaibu Issah, Abdul Suleman and Bukari Sule, alias Taylor — were picked up on different dates following investigations into a robbery that occurred on December 2, 2025.

She explained that the suspects, together with other accomplices, allegedly mounted a blockade on the Goaso–Tepa road while armed and launched attacks on unsuspecting motorists.

COP Donkor added that investigations into both robbery cases are still underway as police efforts continue to recover stolen property and track down additional suspects.

She further appealed to the public to stay alert, place a premium on personal safety when travelling, and refrain from sharing sensitive information with strangers, as police intensify nationwide operations to combat criminal activity.

Last year, the government intensified security efforts along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Highway by deploying military personnel and drones to curb rising attacks on passenger buses.

Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, made this known in Parliament on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, while responding to concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for Walewale regarding escalating robberies and vehicle burnings in the North East Region.

According to Mr. Muntaka Mubarak, although Walewale has seen a steady decline in armed robbery cases—from 30 incidents in 2022 to 18 in 2024—the attacks targeting passenger buses remain a pressing concern.

He linked the recent surge in highway violence to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, explaining that the unrest was spilling over into surrounding areas and contributing to insecurity along the route.

To address the situation, the government imposed a curfew on Walewale and its environs on February 15, 2025, while also reinforcing security operations in the area.

In addition to the military deployment, extra police officers have been dispatched from Tamale to support the Walewale District Command. The government has also increased logistical support, including the provision of more patrol vehicles.

Furthermore, three police bases have been established in Walewale, Janga, and Gombiliga, each manned by 30 officers to enhance security patrols. To protect traders, police escorts have been introduced for market women traveling to and from Walewale’s markets.

Despite these interventions, Mr. Muntaka Mubarak acknowledged that no arrests were made in connection with this year’s robbery incidents. He noted that tracking suspects had been challenging due to the widespread use of motorbikes in the area but remained optimistic about the impact of the new surveillance measures.

“I will continue engaging the police, and with drone surveillance now in place, I believe we will see improvements. But as of now, I have no information on arrests,” he said.

Authorities remain hopeful that these enhanced security measures will restore safety along the highway and deter further attacks.

The Ghana Police Service announced its readiness to face any criminal network and criminal activities with rigour after the boost that comes with the government handing over forty armoured vehicles.

President Mahama handed over the vehicles yesterday, Thursday, December 4, in a handing-over ceremony held at the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra, and in response to this, the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, in an acceptance speech, sent a word of caution to all who seek to disrupt national security and peace that his outfit will relentlessly pursue and apprehend anyone involved in criminal activities.

“Let me use this opportunity to send a strong word of caution to persons who have decided to threaten the security of this country: we are coming for you. You can run all you want and hide wherever you wish, but we will surely get you,” taunting the police service’s achievements so far under his leadership.

“We have made several breakthroughs. In addition to numerous robbery attempts that have been foiled through sustained intelligence operations, we have successfully arrested suspects who operated under the illusion that they could get away with crime. These include the suspect behind the rural bank robberies, the robbery of the Radiance Filling Station, the robbery at Enfasatia, attacks on mobile vendors, the Wire and Bullet serial murders, vehicle theft syndicates, and perpetrators behind fake online food-delivery platforms,” he mentioned.

  • Police confirm arrest of suspects who assaulted Kade SHTS teacher

Police confirm arrest of suspects who assaulted Kade SHTS teacher

The Cyber Security Unit of the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Kade Police, has confirmed the arrest of five suspects linked to the assault of a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School, Michael Quayson, in the Kwaebibirim Municipality.

The suspects, some of whom are former and final-year students, attacked the teacher, Mr Quayson, on October 5 last year. They ambushed and beat him outside the school premises while he was invigilating the WASSCE examination and strictly enforcing the rules. The students slapped and struck him, allegedly using sticks and tree branches, while others recorded the attack.

Earlier reports suggested that the suspects had been allowed to go free after the teacher accepted an out-of-court settlement, agreeing not to press charges after allegedly being compensated.

However, the suspects were apprehended on Monday, January 5, 2026, after reportedly travelling from Accra to Kade.

Awoonor Yevu Godwin, Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), confirmed the arrests to Accra-based Citi News, adding that the suspects are expected to be arraigned before the Kade Circuit Court on Wednesday morning.

Their arrest comes at a time when President Mahama has pledged his support to teachers in their fight against rising attacks, which he attributes to what he describes as students’ sense of entitlement.

Speaking on Monday, January 5, 2026, while addressing the Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Accra, President Mahama highlighted the need for the students to be prosecuted and not allowed to go scot-free. He described such acts as criminal and slammed the conduct of the students as an audacious “sense of entitlement”.

“Disciplinary action. I saw that video of, I think, a math teacher being beaten because, when he was invigilating, he refused to allow our children to cheat. They had a sense of entitlement and asked, ‘Why did you not allow us to cheat?’ I mean, how is that? This is assault. It’s criminal,” the President said.

President Mahama also expressed his displeasure over the case being settled outside the legal process.

“The unfortunate thing is that the matter went to the police station, and the parents of the students went to the police and said they had settled the matter amicably. But when we inquired, the police also said that the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore,” he added.

He recommended that the students should at least have been booked and taken through the legal process.

“At the very least, they should have been bonded to be of good behaviour for a period of time. Then we would believe that justice had been done,” he said.

According to him, this would have served as a deterrent to others, warning that merely paying compensation encourages similar behaviour.

“But just for parents to come and pay a little compensation will encourage others to do the same. And so, as for assaults on teachers, I am with you 100 per cent. We will deal with it,” he stated.

  • Man arrested for firing gunshot in honor of Asake while in Ghana

Man arrested for firing gunshot in honor of Asake while in Ghana

The Ghana Police Service has arrested Paa Nii Cyborg, popularly known as the Accra New Town street king, following an incident in which he fired a gun in public during Nigerian music star Asake’s visit to the area.

The arrest was made after videos of the incident surfaced on social media, prompting swift police action.

Before Cyborg’s arrest, he was seen in a video acknowledging Mahama and other govt officials to pardon hi, as he was aware his conduct was against the law.

“It’s not allowed in Ghana now that you will give a warning shoot. , but I’m pleading with my boss, John Dramani Mahama, Ibrahim, Randy Abbey and Muntaka, that my brother (Asake) from another mother come. So I just want to give a warning short for him, please,” and that’sis when the Accra New Town Street King fired the gunshot in a crowed at the El-Wak Stadium.

Meanwhile, Greater Accra Region is leading in the number of firearms retrieved under the Gun Amnesty Programme led by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapoms (NACSA).

Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr Adam Bonaa disclosed this information in an engagement with the National Chief Imam on Friday, December 26.

He noted,”The Greater Accra Region is one of the areas where most of the weapons we have collected are coming from. It is currently leading in terms of arms surrendered under the amnesty programme, with the support of the security commanders”.

Dr Adam Bonaa’s meeting with the Chief Imam forms part of efforts to create awareness of the ongoing program to the Muslim community.

The gun amnesty program is a window of grace. It offers every law-abiding Ghanaian who holds an unregistered or illicit firearm the opportunity to surrender it without fear of interrogation, arrest, or prosecution.

From the 1st of December 2025 to the 15th of January 2026, any person who voluntarily hands over such weapons at designated collection points will be commended, not condemned. You will be recognised as a patriot contributing to the peace and safety of our nation”, the Interior Minister said during an engagement with the media.

However, individuals who fail to surrender any illegal weapon in their possession, the Asawase Member of Parliament noted, will be treated as criminals and be made to face the full course of the law.

“But let me be clear: when this amnesty period ends, the law will take its full course. The Ghana Police Service and all security agencies will intensify operations to recover illicit arms. Those who refuse this generous offer will be treated as criminals, and the consequences will be firm and uncompromising”, the Minister added, stressing that the effort is essential to creating a safer and more secure environment for all Ghanaians.

The Minister also announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities within the amnesty period, a measure intended to curb celebratory gunfire, prevent injuries, and save lives in communities nationwide.

He also noted that, “We cannot continue to bury our loved ones while the tools of violence remain unchecked. The statistics are not looking good at all”.

Also, on the gun, Minister Muntaka revealed during a session with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament in Accra, on Tuesday, 30 September, in response to questions on firearm regulation and monitoring, announced that gun registration, which is currently done manually, will be digitalised to make it easily accessible and less daunting for citizens.

In a detailed explanation, he broke down what measures the Ministry intends to put in place.

He said, “So this is what is going to happen: You register, and we have you in the registry. In the registry, we have your contact number and all your details. So, three months before expiry, we will send you a notification that your license will expire on 31st December. And you no longer need to walk to any CID office where you have to join a queue to pay for the renewal. Because the databases will be talking to each other, and over the one year, we will have recorded no criminal activities about the person we granted the license to hold the firearm, you will be able to pay through your MoMo or using your bank details. You can renew it immediately without any struggle.

“Many people even tend to forget that the time has come for them to renew it. Maybe along the line, they just see the gun and say, “Hey, when was the last time I renewed this?” So we want to digitalise this, and by the grace of God, when we are done, by the close of the year, worst case, by the close of the year, all these things will be digitalised. It will give people the opportunity to do the renewal online without necessarily having to walk to the Police Headquarters.

However, Mr Muntaka added that gun owners flagged for criminal activity during the renewal period will not be allowed to complete the process online.

“The only thing is that if there’s a criminal record over the period when you want to renew, it may deny you, and that may require that you come physically. But it also helps us. Even if you change address; because we are going to link it to your Ghana Card, we will be able to tell that Maka has a gun, has not renewed it over this period, and has changed his address from Asar to Bima. We will be able to track him and either retrieve the gun from him or get him to renew his license”, he continued.

Suspect arrested for abusing 6-year-old over bedwetting

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has announced the arrest of suspect involved in the abuse of a six-year-old child at Asamankese over bed-wetting.

According to the Ministry, after strongly condemning the act, which went viral a few days ago, the Ghana Police Service was promptly notified to take action on the matter.

“The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) wishes to inform the general public that, following the circulation of the viral video showing the abuse of a child, the matter was promptly referred to the Ghana Police Service by the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection. The police have since arrested the suspect involved, and the investigation is currently ongoing,” a statement released by the ministry read.

The Ministry cautioned parents, guardians, and caregivers against the use of violent disciplinary methods and urged the adoption of non-violent approaches to child upbringing, as discipline must never result in physical harm to a child.

MoGCSP reiterated its commitment to the protection of children. At the same time, it assured that it will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to prevent such incidents and to ensure that perpetrators of child abuse are held accountable.

“Protecting children is indeed a shared responsibility. Families, communities, traditional and religious leaders, and the public all have a role to play to ensure that children grow up in a safe, caring, and protective environment,” the statement added.

In October, the Central Regional Police Command arrested a forty-nine-year-old fisherman for defiling a 13-year-old girl in Apam, in the Central Region.

His arrest followed a video that went viral on social media capturing the man engaged in the unscrupulous act.

A statement shared by the police stated that, “On October 17, 2025, about 1300 hours, the Apam District Police Command received information that on October 16, 2025, a 49-year-old fisherman by the name Samuel Armah, a.k.a Kofi Nyan, had defiled a 13-year-old girl at Mumford, a suburb of Apam. That the suspect lured the survivor into a ghetto at Mumford and defiled her.Police on receipt of information proceeded to the area, and with the assistance of Mumford, task force arrested the suspect.”

The survivor has since been hospitalised at St. Luke Catholic Hospital for examination and treatment.

The statement further explained that after the matter was reported, the case docket was forwarded to the Central Regional office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation.

Upon interrogation at the Unit, the suspect admitted to committing the offence. He was then taken into custody by the police to assist with ongoing investigations.

The statement added that the accused person will be formally charged and brought before the court for prosecution on 23 October 2025.

The command has assured the general public that justice will be served in the matter. It has also appealed to residents of Mumford and its surrounding communities to support efforts to arrest the four accomplices identified as Agoogo, Edina, Kwesi Abbam, and Agya Ankoto, who are currently on the run.

The command has urged anyone with credible information about the whereabouts of these suspects to contact them on 18555 or 0299205854, or to report to the nearest police station.

In 2022, the Central Regional Police Command recorded more than 200 defilement cases within 18 months.

Of the total number, about 147 males were arrested with some absconding and are being pursued to face the law.

A police source told the Ghana News Agency that about 101 cases had been taken to court, and 25 suspects had been charged and convicted.

It blamed the disparities in reporting, arresting, and prosecution of cases on the lack of incriminating evidence, cooperation from victims and families, and legal complexities.

The source condemned the act and attributed the rise in defilement cases to poverty and lack of parental guidance and protection of children, which pushed the victims into the hands of pedophiles.

The source encouraged parents to strictly monitor their children in their usage of  mobile phones, including the sites they visited and their relationships.

Some children get paedophiles online asking them to snap half or full naked pictures of themselves and innocently, some of the children fall prey to such antics.

Parents must, however, devise stringent measures to protect children from smartphones, social media, and paedophiles as the police continued to put in all efforts to ensure that criminal activities were reduced across the region, the source said.

A report by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit said a lot of cases on sexual-based violence were reported to the Unit, but only about five percent was convicted.

That was because some families later received compensations from the perpetrators and decided to settle the matter at home without considering the physical and psychological effects on the victims.

The practice had derailed the fortunes of many girls in terms of reproductive health and socio-economic well-being, the source said.

  • President Mahama delivers 40 armoured cars to Ghana Police, promises 2 toll cars by month’s end

President Mahama delivers 40 armoured cars to Ghana Police, promises 2 toll cars by month’s end

Ghana Police’s operational capacity, safety, and deterrence power are set for a significant boost as the government delivers 40 new armoured vehicles.

In a handing-over ceremony held at the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, December 4, President Mahama, in his speech, commended the police for their hard work and efforts in bringing criminals to book, citing their resolve in tackling several cases of murder, armed robberies and other crimes in the country.

He said, “And you have dealt with them, people who robbed banks and attacked people’s residences.

You have chalked up many victories in bringing them to justice. Let me commend the CID, too.

In the past, there were many unsolved murders. I’m happy to note that recently, many of the murders that occurred have been resolved. With good police intelligence, you’ve been able to bring the suspects to book”

He noted that the 40 armoured vehicles given to the Service are only the first of many his government will hand over to the law enforcement agency, adding that two tow trucks and patrol pickups will also be supplied to police districts.

“These 40 vehicles are just the first batch of what you will be receiving.

By the end of this month, you will receive two tow trucks so that anytime any of these vehicles becomes immobilised anywhere, you can pick it up and bring it back to base. You will also get 10 covert operational vehicles, which I have been cautioned not to talk about. It is only you who will know you have them. In addition, we want to give every police district a normal pickup for patrol duties”, the President said.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, in an acceptance speech, assured the president that with vehicles, his outfit will tear down any criminal syndicate and launch a “robust and targeted operation throughout the country”.

“Your Excellency, these vehicles are going to completely change the face and dynamics of police operations. With these vehicles, we are going to launch very bold, robust, and targeted operations throughout the country. We will dismantle any existing criminal networks, most of whom have gone into hiding due to our intensified activities against them”, he noted.

He also sent a warning to individuals threatening national security, declaring that the Police Service will relentlessly pursue and apprehend anyone involved in criminal activities.

These include the suspect behind the rural bank robberies, the robbery of the Radiance Filling Station, the robbery at Enfasatia, attacks on mobile vendors, the Wire and Bullet serial murders, vehicle theft syndicates, and perpetrators behind fake online food-delivery platforms”.

IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, also assured that the vehicles would be strategically deployed and properly maintained to achieve their intended objectives, commending the government for its intervention.

“We wish to sincerely express our profound gratitude to the government for thinking about us and prioritising our welfare. Our assurance to you is that the vehicles will be well-maintained and strategically deployed to achieve the intended objectives,” he said.

The event also saw the presence of  Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and numerous senior police officers, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies.

The Interior Minister, speaking at the commissioning, also mentioned that the enhanced security capacity of security services in ythe country should block all chances of criminal networks from operating and doing so effectively.

“Your time is up. The state is prepared. The police are prepared. The tools are ready. The intelligence is improving. And the public is increasingly vigilant.”

He said that security agencies will deal decisively with those involved in violent and organised crime. “Whether it is armed robbery, banditry, illegal mining, violence, trafficking, kidnapping, gang activities or terrorism, know that we will find you, we will stop you, and you will face the full force of the law” adding that Ghana, being described as a peaceful country, doesn’t mean it is defenceless.

“Ghana is a peaceful nation, but we are not defenceless.”

The Minister explained that the new armoured vehicles would be deployed based on crime data and operational needs. He said the Interior Ministry will work closely with the Police Administration to ensure the vehicles are used effectively.

“Some will support high crime zones, others will reinforce highway patrol, others will be integrated into rapid response teams and special operations. Deployment will be guided by intelligence, operational need and proper chain of command,” he said.

He also highlighted the shift towards a more technology-driven policing model, supported by a new real-time crime centre being developed under the Inspector-General of Police.

“We are moving towards a policing model that is predictive, data-driven and technology-enabled. In this new era, crime will be confronted not only with courage, but with smart intelligence and modern tools.”

Court jails two police officers 13 years for narcotics trafficking

Two officers of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Nasiru Amadu and Corporal Emmanuel Mintah, received a total of 13 years in prison after being convicted of narcotics trafficking and possession.

ASP Nasiru Amadu received a 10-year prison sentence and a fine of 10,000 penalty units, while Corporal Mintah was sentenced to 5 years in prison and fined the same amount.

The trial, which dates back to 2023, began after an officer at the Afienya District Police Command reported the duo’s suspicious activities. At that time, 43-year-old Corporal Mintah served as a service driver under 48-year-old ASP Nasiru Amadu at the Sakumono District Police Headquarters.

In recent times, Ghana has strengthened measures to curb drug trafficking. In November this year, 600 fertiliser sacks of Indian hemp, weighing a total of 47,530kg and valued at about GH¢4.2 billion, were destroyed by the Volta Regional Police Command. The destruction exercise, which occurred on Monday, November 17, followed an order from the Ho Circuit Court.

This information was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, November 20, and signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaru Gomado, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Region.

Parts of the statement read, “the six hundred sacks contained a total of forty-seven thousand, five hundred and thirty kilograms (47,530kg) with an estimated face value of about 4.2 billion Ghana cedis.”

In August, the Central East Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in possession of 519 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp.

The suspects, identified as Eric Nkyeke, 30, and Francis Klu, 28, were kept in the custody of the police. The Toyota Hilux pick-up with registration number GS 6849-21 was impounded at Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the command, the Nyanyano District police personnel. In June, the police nabbed two suspects for having in their possession 84 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police team, through an intelligence-led operation on June 15, intercepted an Opel Astra vehicle with registration number GT 6430-13 driven by suspect John Dzeble together with suspect Adzobi Mesiwotso on board.A search conducted on the vehicle revealed 86 compressed parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, discreetly concealed in the inner compartments of the car, including the engine, doors, and boot.

In addition to the compressed parcels, the officers retrieved a portable measuring scale machine and a roll of masking tape, also concealed, believed to have been used in the packaging of the substancesThe suspects, along with the exhibits, are currently in Police custody, assisting with investigations.

The Oti Regional Police Command has commended the swift and professional action of the personnel involved in the arrest and reaffirmed its commitment to curbing drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

The arrest comes after a recent incident where the police captured one Christopher Partey for unlawful possession of 40 parcels of a substance suspected to be narcotic drugs.

The National Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service made the arrest on Wednesday, June 11.

The team intercepted a Ford Transit bus with registration number AS 524-16 near the outskirts of Ayikuma township while on routine patrol along the Accra–Somanya corridor.

A search of the vehicle revealed 40 tightly wrapped parcels concealed in a fertilizer sack in the vehicle’s boot. Upon interrogation, Christopher Partey, a passenger on board, admitted ownership of the items.

The exhibits retrieved have been handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters for further investigation. The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting investigations and will be put before the court.

In April, a total of 189 Cadets were officially inducted into service to support Ghana’s ongoing efforts to combat narcotic drug trafficking and related crimes.

The induction, held at the Eastern Naval Command, marked a significant collaboration between the Leadership Training School (LTS) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

The event, which featured the ceremonial swearing of an oath of allegiance, signified the commitment of the new recruits to serve the nation with dedication and uphold the values of integrity and national security.

The training, led by the Commanding Officer of LTS, is designed to build the capacity of cadets by focusing on the fundamentals of narcotics law and enforcement.

The course places particular emphasis on confidence-building, professional discipline, and a thorough understanding of legal procedures necessary for their roles in narcotics control.

As part of the induction, NACOC leadership underscored the importance of adherence to institutional rules and the responsible handling of classified information.

The Commission reiterated its mission to disrupt the narcotics trade and act as a stabilizing force in communities vulnerable to the influence of drug-related activities.

NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to making Ghana an unattractive hub for drug trafficking, prioritizing public safety and the protection of the nation’s borders.

Calls have also been made for increased government support to enhance the Commission’s operational capacity, including the recruitment of additional personnel and the provision of improved financial and logistical resources.

The new cadets are expected to play a key role in reinforcing the Commission’s enforcement operations across the country.

  • Man arrested 5 years after viral video captured him giving cigarette to minor

Man arrested 5 years after viral video captured him giving cigarette to minor

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man seen in a viral video handing a substance suspected to be a cigarette to a child.

The suspect, Samuel Obeng Acheampong was arrested on 22nd November, 2025 through an intelligence-led operation.

According to a letter signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, the suspect admitted to the offence during interrogation and indicated that the incident occurred about five (5) years ago.

“The suspect is in custody, assisting the investigation, and will be put before the court,” the letter shared on Facebook read.

The Police Service assured that it remains committed to ensuring the safety of children and cautioned the public against acts that expose them to harm.

It added that it will not relent on ensuring that perpetrators are pursued and arrested to face the full rigours of the law.

In July this year, the Wa Circuit Court sentenced Issahaku Waris, a 31-year-old resident of Wa Zongo, to seven years imprisonment for defiling a 5-year-old female child.

The court presided over by His Lordship Jonathan Avoogo gave his ruling on Friday, July 18. The unlawful act, according to the Ghana Police Service, occurred on Thursday, April 24.

The convict was apprehended on Saturday, April 26, by officers of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and swiftly put before the court.

The victim’s family and the community, who were cooperative, aided the diligent investigation carried out by the DOVVSU.

The Police noted the conviction in the defilement case underscores its unwavering commitment to justice and the protection of vulnerable members of society. It has thus encouraged members of the general public to report all forms of abuse promptly.

The Criminal Offences Act, 1960, defines defilement in Section 101(2) of Act 29 as natural or unnatural carnal knowledge of a child under sixteen years of age with or without the child’s consent.

According to section 14(a) of Act 29, consent for carnal knowledge of a child under sixteen years is void—with punishment of not less than seven years and not more than twenty-five years in prison.

The Ghana Police Service continues to ensure it seeks justice for families that have had their underage children defiled.

In January this year, a case of child defilement led to the sentencing of Stephen Otu, a 32-year-old tiler, to 22 years imprisonment with hard labor.

Otu, popularly known as Atta, pleaded guilty to the charges and begged for mercy, but the court found him guilty and handed down the sentence as a deterrent to others.

According to Chief Inspector of Police Abraham Ayitey, the prosecution told the court that the victim, a 12-year-old primary six student, was defiled by Otu in Wassa Akropong township.

The convict had asked the victim her age, and despite knowing she was only 12, he lured her into his room, assaulted her sexually, and gave her GH¢20.00 after the act.

The court heard that Otu took advantage of the victim on three separate occasions, resulting in her pregnancy. The victim’s mother discovered her pregnancy on November 24, 2024, and the victim revealed that Otu was responsible.

A report was made to the police, and a medical examination confirmed that the victim was two months pregnant.

The court, presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, sentenced Otu to 22 years imprisonment with hard labor, emphasizing that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might engage in similar acts.

In 2024, a 47-year-old man was arrested in Kuwait, a community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, on suspicion of defiling a three-year-old girl.

Locals apparently captured the culprit, named Efo Emma, in the act and brought her to the Tuba Police Station, where she was placed under arrest.

Reporting on “Nyankonton Mu Nsem” on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Oheneba Ademah stated that Efo Emma allegedly lured the minor into his room and defiled her on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The incident occurred while the victim’s mother was at the market.

According to the report, another tenant in the house heard the minor crying from Efo Emma’s room. Despite knocking, there was no response, and the door was locked from the inside.

Ademah reported that the tenant questioned Efo Emma about why he had the girl in his room and refused to open the door while she was crying. When the suspect did not respond, the tenant raised an alarm, prompting other residents to rush to the scene.

They forced open Efo Emma’s door and discovered him naked, having smeared the victim’s private parts with pomade. Ademah further revealed that the suspect had also applied pomade to his genitalia.

Efo Emma was arrested and taken to the Tuba Police Station, where he is currently being held. The minor, who is in pain, has been transported to the hospital for a medical examination.

  • Wendy Shay takes legal action against perpetrator behind lesbian claims

Wendy Shay takes legal action against perpetrator behind lesbian claims

Singer Wendy Shay has officially filed a complaint with the Ghana Police Service concerning allegations that she is engaged in lesbianism with a young girl she has adopted, known as Tracy Shay.

A young man, in a viral video, alleges that Wendy is acting on a spiritualist’s instructions to engage in inappropriate conduct with the minor.

Wendy is therefore urging the public to help identify the perpetrator so the person can be held accountable.

“The matter has been formally reported to the Ghana Police Service, and active investigations are underway. I have been informed that the individual behind the account has been traced to the United Arab Emirates, where he is currently employed with a construction company. Further steps are being taken through the appropriate channels to ensure he is held accountable for his actions.

“I am cooperating fully with the police and trust the investigation process to bring this matter to a swift and just resolution. I further encourage us all to continue standing against cyberbullying, online harassment, and malicious attacks on innocent people,” the statement shared on November 19, 2025, read.

Legal representatives of renowned gospel musician Evangelist Diana Asamoah also strongly refuted claims suggesting that she is a lesbian.

In a statement addressing a viral video circulating on social media, the legal team dismissed the allegations as slanderous and baseless.

The video, featuring a woman of unknown identity, insinuates that the gospel singer is involved in same-sex relationships.

According to the statement, Evangelist Diana Asamoah categorically denies the claim and maintains that she does not engage in any form of lesbianism.

Her legal representatives have challenged the individual behind the accusations to step forward and provide evidence, indicating their readiness to contest the matter in court.

“In the circumstances, we are throwing a challenge to the lady in the video to own up and justify her vile allegations so we contest her baseless claim in a court of competent jurisdiction,” the statement read.

The legal team further urged the public to disregard the video should the accuser fail to substantiate her claims.

This development follows a growing trend of public figures facing unfounded allegations online, raising concerns about misinformation and defamation on social media.

A dancer and member of the DWP Academy, Lisa Quama, has addressed speculations surrounding her style of dressing, firmly stating that her fashion choices do not define her sexuality.

Despite acknowledging her tomboyish style, Lisa strongly dismissed claims that she is a lesbian, emphasizing that one’s choice of clothing does not determine their sexual orientation.

“I am not a lesbian. That is a sexual narrative, but a tomboy is simply someone comfortable in male clothes. Yes! I love men with all my heart,” she clarified on The Delay Show on March 8, 2025

Lisa initially hesitated when asked whether she identified as a tomboy. However, after persistent questioning from the host, she eventually embraced the label.

“I don’t want to say yes… I will never be a boy because I am a girl. I am not dressing like a boy… You know what? I am a tomboy. I have accepted that I am a tomboy,” she admitted.

Her remarks come in response to ongoing social media discussions about her appearance, reinforcing the point that personal style should not be mistaken for one’s sexuality.

Ace Ghanaian Highlife musician and actress Paulina Oduro has hit back at rumors about her sexuality, calling them baseless and absurd.

Addressing the speculation that she is a lesbian, she expressed frustration over such claims, emphasizing that her role as a mother should be enough to dismiss the allegations.

“I had an interview with Delay, and she said people say I am a lesbian,” Oduro recalled during a discussion on Joy Prime on March 26, 2025. “I ended up saying they are very stupid and idiots because I have three kids and an amazing relationship with my partners.”

The veteran musician, who has remained single for some time, noted that her happiness is not dependent on being in a relationship. She asserted that she is emotionally independent and does not need a romantic partner to feel fulfilled.

“I have been on my own for a while. I don’t need a man or another human being to make me happy,” she stated. “You can be who you want to be, but don’t label me because it is something I don’t like.”

Paulina Oduro’s response comes on the back of public scrutiny regarding her relationship status, with some speculating about her sexual orientation. She expressed disappointment that people could fabricate such claims simply because she has chosen to remain single.

With a long-standing career in entertainment, Oduro has built a reputation as a bold and outspoken personality. She made it clear that she refuses to conform to societal expectations or entertain false narratives about her personal life.

  • Suspected fake marriage certificate syndicate napped by police, investigations underway

Suspected fake marriage certificate syndicate napped by police, investigations underway

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reported that it has launched investigations into a suspected syndicate believed to be arranging and issuing fake marriage certificates to unsuspecting members of the public.

This illegal act was exposed to the authorities after a client’s marriage certificate, purportedly issued through the syndicate, was rejected by a foreign embassy during a visa application process.

There were inconsistencies that prompted the matter to be reported to the Assembly.

Confirming the detection, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah, stated that the Assembly immediately referred the matter to the Ghana Police Service for a full-scale investigation.

He said the preliminary information gathered so far suggested that the individuals involved had been issuing forged documents under the guise of facilitating marriage registration at the AMA.

Mr Ankrah noted that although no arrests had been made yet, the Assembly is fully cooperating with the police to unravel the network behind the fraudulent scheme and identify all persons involved.

He stressed that the AMA would not accommodate any move aimed at compromising the integrity of its marriage registration processes.

Adding that the public must only transact marriage-related businesses directly with the AMA at its Marriage Registry.

“The matter is currently under investigation, and we urge the public to remain vigilant. Anyone who has been approached by such individuals or suspects foul play should report immediately to the Assembly or the nearest police station,” he stated.

He entreated the general public to report any of such issues and urged them to verify the authenticity of their marriage certificate from the Assembly.

The suspects are currently under investigation by the Ghana Police Service to determine the full extent of their operations and bring all offenders to justice.

Regarding efforts to bust syndicates, the Ghana Police Service rescued Fifty-seven (57) Nigerian nationals from a human trafficking and cybercrime syndicate operating at Adom Estates, Community 25.

This followed a strategic operation that took place on Wednesday, October 22, led by the CID’s Operations Unit following intelligence gathered on the group’s activities.

The operation led to the arrest of five suspects alleged to be the master minds behind the syndicate. They include Joel Nosa, Collins Rotimi, Shadrack Lulu, Austin Amahuaro, and John Uloko.

According to the Police’s preliminary investigations, which were announced through a statement, these suspects lure their victims with promises of jobs and education, and when they finally arrive, they are forced into fraudulent online activities such as romance scams and other illegal activities.

According to a press statement issued by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, “Upon arrival, the victims, aged between 18 and 26 years, were coerced into engaging in online romance scams and other heinous activities,” the statement said.

During the operation, police retrieved 77 laptops, 38 mobile phones, two vehicles, three television sets, and other internet-enabled devices suspected to have been used in the crimes. The 57 rescued victims are currently receiving care and support, while the suspects remain in police custody, assisting with further investigations.

The seized items have been retained for forensic analysis.

The Police Service has urged the public, especially young people, to be cautious about offers of employment, education, or travel made through social media and other unverified sources.

“The Police reiterate their determination to combat human trafficking, cybercrime, and related offenses, and urge anyone with credible information on such activities to report to the nearest police station,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in a joint operation on Friday, October 17, busted a human trafficking syndicate operated mainly by Ghanaians and Ivorians.

In a statement shared the same day, the crime intelligence agency announced that following the raid, it had successfully rescued 26 victims of human trafficking, comprising sixteen (16) Ghanaians and ten (10) Ivorians.

These nationals had fallen victim to job opportunity scams run by individuals posing as recruitment agents for QNET, a multinational company known for its wellness and lifestyle products.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Quest,” was conducted by EOCO’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit in collaboration with QNET, around 10:30 a.m.

“The operation, code-named Operation Quest, followed intelligence that some foreigners and Ghanaians had been trafficked under the guise of employment with the QNET Company — a reputable organisation that trades in wellness and lifestyle products.

The suspects include two (2) Ivorians and seven (7) Ghanaians, while the victims were made up of ten (10) Ivorians and sixteen (16) Ghanaians,” the statement noted.

The organisation clarified that these individuals had no legitimate ties to the company and were exploiting QNET’s reputation to carry out their illicit activities.

“All nine (9) suspects are currently in the custody of EOCO to assist in investigations,” parts of the statement added.

EOCO cautioned the public against falling for such scams and advised that all reports of employment offers purportedly from QNET be directed to the appropriate authorities. It also reminded the public that the company is working to restore its reputation, which has suffered due to impersonation by groups and agencies using its name for fraudulent recruitment schemes.

“EOCO wishes to advise the general public to report all cases of individuals and groups who claim to be agents of QNET who can provide job opportunities at the company, either in Ghana or abroad.

  • Police interdict officers captured in video allegedly taking bribe

Police interdict officers captured in video allegedly taking bribe

The Bono Regional Police Command has interdicted some of its officers who were caught taking bribes in a viral video from motorists.

In a statement shared by the Ghana Police Service and signed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the officers involved have been identified to assist with investigation.

“The Bono Regional Police Command has initiated an investigation into a video circulating on social media that shows some police officers allegedly taking money from motorists. The officers involved have been identified and interdicted to allow for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident,” the statement dated October 29 indicated.

The Command has therefore assured the public of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability among its personnel.

During the first quarter of the year, President John Dramani Mahama stressed the need for urgent reforms to eliminate corruption within the Ghana Police Service, emphasizing that transparency and accountability must be at the core of law enforcement.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14, during the swearing-in ceremony of Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mahama underscored how corruption erodes public trust and weakens the justice system.

He highlighted that maintaining integrity within the police service is essential for enforcing the rule of law and safeguarding national security.

“Mr IGP, your duty extends beyond maintaining law and order; it also involves eliminating corruption from the service,” he stated.

He warned that corruption among law enforcement officers diminishes confidence in the police, making it difficult to uphold justice and combat crime effectively.

To counter these challenges, Mahama called on IGP Yohuno to take decisive action against unethical conduct, including bribery and abuse of power, to restore credibility to the service.

He insisted that corruption at all levels must be met with strict enforcement measures and accountability.

“It is imperative that officers at all ranks are held to the highest ethical standards, and any form of malpractice, from bribery to abuse of power, must be swiftly and decisively addressed,” he asserted.

Mahama expressed his belief that under Yohuno’s leadership, the police service would undergo much-needed reforms, ensuring that the institution regains the full confidence and respect of the Ghanaian public.

In 2022, a survey conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service with other stakeholders in the fight against corruption ranked the Ghana Police Service as the most corrupt institution among 23 other institutions sampled.

This was revealed in a research dubbed; corruption in Ghana, People’s Experiences and View.

The aim of the survey was to unearth corrupt institutions and make available data that will guide the formulation of policies that will look at nipping corruption in the bud.

The survey indicated that more than 17.4 million bribes were paid in 2021 with police officers topping the list of officials who take bribes at 53.2%.

The Ghana Immigration Service Officers and GRA customs officers come next, at 37.4% and 33.6% respectively, while elected government representatives are at the bottom of the list at 2.9%.

According to the survey, people with the highest level of (tertiary) education were 1.6 times more likely to have paid a bribe than people with no formal education.

Also, ten out of the 16 administrative regions recorded a prevalence of bribery higher than the national average.

There are, however, sizable variations across the 16 regions of the country.

The prevalence of bribery in the Bono East, Savannah and Volta regions, for example, is substantially lower than the national rate, at 11.8, 14.5 and 19.1 per cent, respectively.

Also in the Western North, Ahafo and North East regions, bribery is substantially higher, at 53.4, 47.0 and 41.9 per cent, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Ghana Police Service have reaffirmed their commitment to working closely in the fight against corruption following a high-level engagement between their respective leaderships on Thursday, 8 May.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in what marked their first formal interaction since the IGP’s assumption of office.

The visit aimed to strengthen ties and enhance coordinated law enforcement efforts between the two key state institutions.

During the meeting, Mr. Agyebeng emphasized the necessity of institutional synergy, stressing that while the OSP holds independent investigative and prosecutorial authority under Act 959, collaboration with the Police Service remains central to advancing its nationwide anti-corruption efforts. He highlighted the importance of tapping into the Police Service’s broad presence across the country to boost the reach and efficiency of the OSP’s mandate.

Inspector-General Yohuno expressed full support for the renewed partnership, pledging the Police Service’s dedication to aiding the OSP in rooting out corruption. He acknowledged that addressing corruption effectively requires a unified and strategic approach among state agencies and called for continuous cooperation, especially in intelligence gathering and sharing.

Senior Police officers who participated in the meeting commended the OSP for its persistent pursuit of accountability and transparency in public life. They reaffirmed their interest in promoting closer institutional collaboration to combat corruption and related offenses.

The Special Prosecutor was joined by Mr. Emmanuel Basintale, Director of Investigations at the OSP. Receiving them were several top police officials, including COP Iddi Lansah Seidu, COP Ernest Owusu, COP Okyere Darko Asumadu, and DCOP Kofi Blagodzie.

The meeting concluded with a shared resolve to intensify joint efforts aimed at fostering integrity and strengthening rule of law across Ghana.

Suspected Indian hemp seized in Eastern Region has not turned to sawdust – Police clarifies

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to ignore circulating media reports alleging that the intercepted Kia truck containing 36 sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp on the Sekesua road in the Eastern Region had turned into sawdust.

Describing such claims as “false,” the police say the intercepted vehicle and the suspected narcotics have been secured at the Eastern Regional Command.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred on September 30, 2025, when officers from the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters in Koforidua stopped the truck, registered ER-760-23, which was transporting goods concealed under a layer of sawdust.

The vehicle and its contents were moved to the Sekesua Police Station; however, the driver and his mate managed to escape custody, abandoning the truck.

Nonetheless, efforts are underway, according to the police, to track down and apprehend the two suspects who fled, while the Police Professional Standards Bureau begins an internal investigation into the handling of the case.

The Police Administration reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the case is thoroughly investigated and the law applied.

Last month, 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, locally known as ‘Red’ were confiscated, with six individuals arrested, following a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

The seizure took place at Gbintri, near Nalerigu in the North East Region on Thursday, September 18.

This information was contained in a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabiik Anmain of the Public Affairs Unit and issued by the North East Regional Police Command on September 21.

The trucks with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14 were loaded with Tramadol en route to Gbintri from Sankase in the Republic of Togo. The suspects, have been identified as Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik.

“The North East Regional Police Command in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in Nalerigu, has intercepted 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as “Red,” a restricted drug concealed in a truck and arrested six suspects at Gbintri near Nalerigu in the North East Region.

“A search of the trucks uncovered the 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as “Red,” concealed among other goods in the truck with registration number GR 1712-16. The exhibits have since been secured for evidential purposes.During interrogation, the suspects admitted that the consignment was destined for Moses Ayorik at Gbintri for onward delivery to another individual at Gushegu,” part of the statement read.

According to the statement, the apprehended individuals were locked up in custody to assist  investigations. In addition, efforts are still underway to trace and arrest other individuals connected to the case.

Also, officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at the Transit Terminal on Thursday, June 19, intercepted a shipment disguised as general merchandise and headed for Niger.

The officials uncovered 100 cartons of Tramadol (50 of 250mg, 50 of 120mg), also known on the streets as “red.”

The operation, led by CRO William Kpodo and the monitoring team, has now been escalated to the Tema Collection’s investigation unit in collaboration with Narcotics Board, Port Security and JPCU.

In March, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division intercepted contraband goods at Tema Port.

Boxes containing opioids were confiscated before noon today. There were 26 cartons of Rahol Tapentadol 250 mg, 160 cartons of Tafradol Tapentadol 120 mg, 40 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol 120 mg, 4 cartons of Timaking Tapentadol 250 mg, 190 cartons of Diazole Loperamide 2 mg, and 320 cartons of Chlorpheniramine Maleate.

The drugs were worth approximately GH₵20 million. The shipment was en route to Niger, its final destination.

Engaging the media, Health Minister Mintah Akandoh condemned the use of land borders to smuggle drugs and announced that the impounded consignment would remain in the safe custody of the Authority.

“There are only two designated areas for the import and export of medication—Tema Port and Kotoka International Airport. Drugs are not imported through our land borders,” he said.

He called on stakeholders and security agencies to confiscate any drugs brought in through the land borders.

The Health Minister indicated that authorities would swiftly seek a court order for the proper disposal of the consignment. Following the court order, the consignment were disposed of.

Ghana is witnessing a surge in drug consumption and addiction among young people.

As such, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, led by George Opare Addo, has introduced an initiative to address the rising issue of substance abuse among young people through a campaign called “Ghana against Drugs (GAD) – Red Means Stop,” which aims to combat the problem effectively.

In a recent interview, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, revealed that a survey conducted on tertiary students discovered that about 28 out of every 100 university or college students abuse codeine and cough syrup.

On Thursday, August 28, he indicated that 12 in every 100 tertiary students are involved in cocaine abuse. The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment further reported that 11% of the participants admitted to overusing heroin.

“Codeine and cough syrups stand at 28%. And then you will be amazed to know that 12% of our university and tertiary students are abusing cocaine and 11% heroin,” he added.

According to him, more than half of the respondents have admitted to consuming marijuana-infused products. In July, Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, declared Opioid abuse a national emergency.

During the induction of a new cohort of pharmacists who join the Pharmacy Council of Ghana, the inductees were charged to aid the government’s efforts in combating the opioid crisis, particularly the misuse of tramadol.

Hon. Akandoh reminded the new pharmacists of their motto, “Amicus Humanis Generis” Friends of the Human Race, urging them to uphold it with compassion, ethics, and excellence.

The ceremony, held under the theme “The Future is Now: Young Pharmacists at the Forefront of Preventing Opioid Misuse in Ghana”, highlighted both the promise and responsibility that lie ahead for the nation’s newest healthcare professionals.

Hon. Akandoh described the event as a “special day” marking the beginning of a crucial professional journey. “You have reached this milestone through dedication, hard work, and perseverance,” he said. The Minister emphasised the critical and evolving role of pharmacists in Ghana’s healthcare landscape, describing them as “frontline healthcare providers, educators, patient advocates, and guardians of public health.”

He noted that pharmacists’ work has a direct impact on health outcomes and the well-being of the public. The Minister highlighted how pharmacists are central to the government’s broader health agenda, including the MahamaCares and Free Primary Health Care initiatives.

These programs, he said, rely on pharmacists to deliver accessible, quality healthcare and manage chronic diseases at the community level.

The Ministry of Health has extended its heartfelt congratulations to all newly inducted pharmacists and commends the Pharmacy Council for its unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery.

In April, the Ministry of Health destroyed a significant consignment of illicit opioid-containing drugs that had entered Ghana under questionable circumstances.

The consignment, which consisted of 128 boxes of Tafrodol, 92 boxes of Timaking Tapertado, and 10 boxes of Rahol Tapentadol, totaling 230 boxes, posed serious risks to public health, particularly due to the potential for widespread misuse and addiction among the youth.

The destruction of the drugs took place at Vigour-DW Enterprise, a waste management company based in Ashaiman, and was supervised by key regulatory and legal authorities. The operation was carried out in strict compliance with a court order. In a rare and highly symbolic gesture, the Ministry chose to publicly incinerate the drugs, sending a strong message to those involved in the illegal drug trade.

Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized that this action was only the beginning in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

“We will not stop here. After the safe disposal of this consignment, we will further investigate the clearing agent and the importer, and hand them over to the Attorney General for prosecution,” he stated firmly.

A BBC Africa Eye investigation uncovered that Aveo Pharmaceuticals, based in Mumbai, has been producing unlicensed, highly addictive opioids that are illegally exported to West Africa.

These drugs, packaged to resemble legitimate medications, contain a dangerous combination of tapentadol, a powerful opioid, and carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant banned in Europe due to its addictive properties.

This combination, which is not licensed for medical use anywhere in the world, can cause severe side effects, including respiratory distress, seizures, and fatal overdoses. Despite these risks, the drugs have gained popularity as cheap, readily available street substances in Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has condemned the illegal importation of dangerous opioids and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Society has urged multiple agencies—including the FDA, the Pharmacy Council, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Authority, and the National Intelligence Bureau—to probe the issue and hold those responsible accountable.

“If any local pharmaceutical company is found to have breached regulatory protocols, appropriate sanctions should be enforced to maintain the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Ghana,” PSGH stated in a press release issued on February 24.

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has revoked the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification of Aveo Pharmaceuticals, an Indian pharmaceutical company, after investigations linked it to the illegal distribution of opioid-based medications in West Africa.

As part of the crackdown, the FDA has also directed Samos Pharma, a Ghana-based importer, to terminate all business relations with Aveo Pharmaceuticals and Westfin International. Additionally, the registration of six products from Masters Pharmaceutical Limited, which intended to use Aveo as a contract manufacturer, has been suspended.

My govt is piloting solutions to treat galamsey-polluted water bodies – President Mahama

    By Amanda Cartey

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that scientific tests are being carried out on new chemicals that could help restore polluted water bodies and rivers due to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey activities.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholder engagement on Galamsey in Accra on Friday October 3, with members of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), President Mahama said, “there are new chemicals that have come that allow you to treat water and take out the toxins and the heavy metals. One of them is called dowtin. The people came, and we sent them there. They took samples, for testing. We are waiting for them to bring the results back.”

He has asked Ghanaians to exercise patience regarding the longstanding battle against illegal mining (galamsey) activities. During a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), President Mahama said declaring a state of emergency will not end the menace.

According to him, government advisors believe the country can overcome galamsey by adopting best practices in small-scale mining, including technologies that help neutralize or remove harmful chemicals from water bodies. Additionally, the President pledged to honor scores of Ghanaians’ calls by declaring a state of emergency when his advisors give him the nod to do so.

President Mahama believes that the country can eradicate the long-term canker if it deploys more troops as well as invests more resources in the fight. He concluded that the battle seems to be a long one, but his administration is committed to fighting it.

“While we are fighting the menace, I am also saying we should uptake technology in order to protect the environment. So yes let’s fight the illegal mining but at the same time, let’s bring the new technology that will help us protect our environment.

“Now with the elephant in the room, state of emergency, yes, I have the power to do it, but the president acts on the advice of the National Security Authority, and as at now, this moment, the National Security Authority believes that we can win the fight against galamsey, declaring a state of emergency. I want to assure you that the day they advise me otherwise, that boss, now we need a state of emergency, I won’t hesitate,” he added.

Individuals present at the meeting included government officials and civil society leaders. The engagement came at a time when there has been mounting pressure on the Mahama-led administration to declare a state of emergency regarding the issue, due to its adverse effects on the environment.

The menace continues to threaten not only Ghana’s waterbodies, food crops and forest reserves but also the country’s energy infrastructure.

Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy has given a stern warning about the potential future repercussions of galamsey if the country fails to find a lasting solution to the menace.

During a visit to the Anwomaso Thermal Power Station in Kumasi on Wednesday October 1, Deputy Ranking Member, Collins Adomako-Mensah, starling revelation about how Ghana’s power installations are being tempered with by illegal miners.

According to him, the country’s electricity generation authorities including the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the Bui Power Authority (BPA), WAPCO Gas Pipeline and the Volta River Authority risk shutting down over attacks on their infrastructure.

“When we were engaging the other participants, two things came up- one has to do with galamsey and it is having a heavy, heavy toll on the energy sector, not just about water. Gridco complained about galamsey. Their pylons, people are digging where they have a lot of their pylons. Yesterday we were at Bui and the Bui water situation is deteriorating because of the galamsey situation surrounding their water bodies.

He added, “Gridco complained about galamsey. Their pylons, people are digging where they have a lot of their pylons. Yesterday we were at Bui and the Bui water situation is deteriorating because of the galamsey situation surrounding their water bodies.”

In September, GRIDCo expressed grave concern over the encroachment on its transmission tower sites by galamsey operators, who are digging dangerously close to the foundations.

Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Engineering and Operations, Frank Otchere, made this known at GRIDCo headquarters in Tema on Thursday, September 25.

Mr. Otchere stated that maintenance teams now face attacks when they attempt to access certain areas.

“Unfortunately, there are some areas that even when our maintenance teams go there, they get shot at. And some of them have had to run away,” he disclosed, adding that the situation has made it impossible for GRIDCo to operate in certain locations without security support.

He added that the galamseyers are weakening the towers, which are carefully engineered to withstand immense weight and pressure. He appealed for urgent assistance from national security agencies to protect transmission corridors and avert the potential collapse of towers.

“This engagement aims to provide a platform for frank and constructive dialogue between the Government and civil society on the menace of illegal mining, with a view to harnessing collective expertise, perspectives, and solutions to address this national challenge,” the letter stated.

Ongoing research by a forensic histopathologist and former Head of Pathology at KNUST and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Prof. Dr Paul Poku Sampene Ossei, has revealed alarming trends in the rising cases of spontaneous abortions among pregnant women in Ghana.

Approximately five hundred cases of spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) have been recorded in research that links these cases to severe contamination of placentas and the presence of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, resulting from galamsey activities.

A spontaneous abortion is the unintentional expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus before it is viable.Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 27, Prof. Sampene warned that galamsey is poisoning unborn babies and endangering the lives of mothers.

“I have about 500 cases where women go to the hospital and abort their babies because of the concentration of these heavy metals in their placenta,” he disclosed.

According to him, his research involved over 4,000 placentas examined from different regions across Ghana. The results showed dangerous levels of heavy metal contamination on both the maternal and foetal sides. “The placentas are all contaminated, polluted with heavy metals,” he said.

The dangers of these metals extend beyond pregnancy losses. Another effect of galamsey is the excessive use of alum to address the increasing turbidity of water.

Ghana Water Company Limited, the nation’s largest water supplier, has resorted to using higher concentrations of alum. Prof. Sampene cautioned that high levels of aluminium hydroxide pose serious health risks.

According to him, one of the consequences of excessive alum use is kidney disease, which is already on the rise. He warned that if left unchecked, “Ghana will be in big trouble.”

“Of course, people are talking about turbidity, and then the Water Company is saying that they are using more alum. Alum is aluminium hydroxide, that is the full name, aluminium hydroxide, and this aluminium hydroxide, when taken for a long period, in fact at higher concentration, has a lot of what you call health effects. One of them is kidney problems.

“When you use alum, that’s aluminium hydroxide, which is used to purify the water, especially when they are using that concentration, which I believe is so high, it’s going to cause kidney problems, it’s going to irritate the respiratory tract, and it’s going to cause what we call neurological defects.

“All these things have been proven, have been studied and proven to be important, and we have to be very careful about them now. This goes apart from the effects that we are seeing around,” he explained.

Among the recent measures taken to protect water bodies from illegal miners is the deployment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

The Secretariat includes the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Narcotics Control Commission, and the National Security Secretariat.

Addressing the security forces, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Amarh Kofi-Buah, directed the team to ruthlessly counter the activities of galamsey operators as they are the enemies of the state.

“Any recalcitrant entering into these zones is not merely a trespasser. They are an enemy of the state. You are to be firm. You are to be resolute. You are to be ruthless.

“And please, take it from me, you will take no obstructionist instruction from any big man. Remember, the biggest man in Ghana is the President of the Republic, and he’s the one who has sent you,” Mr Kofi-Buah charged.

One suspect arrested over foiled Obuasi robbery attempt

The Obuasi Divisional command of the Ghana Police Service has apprehended one suspect in a foiled robbery attempt on the Tutuka-Akrofuom road- Obuasi.

Preliminary interrogations indicate that the Police team that responded to the distress call saw a gang of robbers who fled into the bush, leaving two unregistered motorbikes and a machete behind.

The Police pursued the robbers in the bush and arrested suspect Pascal Yenkye, who got shot in the leg while trying to escape arrest on his motorbike.

The injured suspect is currently receiving medical attention under police guard, while a manhunt is underway to arrest the other suspects on the run to face the law.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to ensure security, law, and order across the country.

In recent years, the Ghana Police Service has made some strides in curtailing the activities of robbers as well as seeing to the prosecution of those arrested during their line of work.

A shootout between suspected armed robbers and the Ghana Police Service at Atebubu in the Bono East region on July 30 led to the demise of two suspects.

On that fateful day, a team of police officers who were on patrol duty, according to the Ghana Police Service, came across a robbery attack on some commuters along the Atebubu Highway.

The suspects started firing towards the police officers upon sighting them. The suspects who got hit during the shootout were rushed to a hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The other suspects are currently at large after escaping into some nearby bushes. A search at the scene led to the retrieval of a shotgun loaded with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete.

Intensive efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects, the Ghana Police Service has assured.

An intelligence-led operation by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) foiled a robbery attempt by five armed men en route to rob a foreign national at Cantonments on July 15.

In a statement, the Police noted that they received credible intelligence that the five armed men were lodging at a hotel in Labadi.

While en route to the location in a Toyota Yaris vehicle, the suspects opened fire on a police team after detecting police surveillance. An officer got shot. A shootout ensued, and two of the suspects succumbed to gunshot wounds after being rushed to the Ghana Police Hospital.

The officer who sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and legs has been hospitalised and is responding to treatment, according to the Police. The Police retrieved from the scene two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, live cartridges, three mobile phones, talismans, and other items.

Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway to arrest the remaining three suspects currently at large. This incident preceded a shootout between officers of the Tema Regional Police Command and a group of 10 suspected robbers during a robbery incident at the Tema Industrial Area that led to the demise of three suspects.

The incident occurred on July 21 when the police patrol team responded to a distress call and exchanged gunfire upon arrival at the scene during a confrontation with the suspects.

Three of the suspected robbers succumbed to gunshot wounds, but seven others, some of whom are believed to have been wounded, managed to evade arrest. The police are on a manhunt for these suspected robbers. The remains of the three suspected robbers have been deposited at the Police Hospital Morgue for identification, preservation, and autopsy.

Exhibits recovered from the scene include a Bruni mod foreign pistol, a double-barrelled locally manufactured pistol with 2 rounds of ammunition and 11 live BB ammunition. The Ghana Police Service has commended its officers at the Kpone District Command for their efforts in managing the robbery incident.

What the law says about robbery and stealing

Section 149 of the Criminal Offences states that a person who commits robbery commits a first-degree felony. Per Section 150, “a person who steals a thing commits robbery (a) if in, and for the purpose of stealing the thing, that person uses force or causes harm to any other person, or (b) if that person uses a threat or criminal assault or harm to any other person, with intent to prevent or overcome the resistance of the other person to the stealing of the thing.”

Section 124 of the Criminal Offences Act indicates that a person who steals commits a second-degree felony. Where the court that finds a person guilty of stealing is satisfied that on not less than two previous occasions the accused was found guilty of stealing, the court shall order that the whole or a part of a term of imprisonment imposed by it shall be spent in productive hard labour.

A person in respect of whom the court makes an order under subsection (2) is disqualified for election to Parliament or to a District Assembly within the meaning of the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), for a period not exceeding five years.

Productive hard labour means labour in a state farm or state factory or any other public co-operative or collective enterprise specified by the Minister.

    Police efforts in combatting robbery

In July, the Police anaged to secure a conviction for an armed robbery incident that occurred in Atonsu Kuwait, Kumasi, four years ago.

The Kumasi Circuit Court sentenced two individuals to 15 years imprisonment for the violent armed robbery incident. The convicted persons are Abass Kasim (26) and Daniel Morro, a.k.a. “China” (25). They were part of a group of five that attacked a resident at his Atonsu Kuwait, Kumasi home on July 31, 2021, at about 2:30 am. The gang, wielding a pistol and cutlasses, shot the victim in the abdomen, inflicted multiple cutlass wounds, and robbed him of personal effects.

Items stolen during the attack included one iPhone 11 mobile phone valued at GHS 5,500, one Samsung phone valued at GHS 500, two Apple Watches valued at GHS 3,000, and two M.K. ladies’ handbags. An unspecified quantity of jewelry, $600, and an unspecified amount of Ghana cedis were also stolen. Following police investigations, Abass Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021, and during interrogation, he admitted his involvement and subsequently led officers to the arrest of Daniel Morro, and a pistol used in the attack was later retrieved.

On Thursday, August 19, 2021, they were arraigned before Kumasi Circuit Court 4, where they were initially remanded into custody after pleading not guilty. The two reappeared in court on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, and were convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on each count.

This included conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and unlawful entry. Abetment of crime and possession of firearms without authority. All sentences are to run concurrently. The convicts have since been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi to begin serving their prison sentence. Meanwhile, the three accomplices are currently at large, and the police have intensified efforts to locate them.

The police reported another victory after an armed robber, Paul Avortide, was jailed for 19 years with hard labour for robbery. The 25-year-old convict, on May 21, at about 4:00 am, at Tsikpota near New Housing, Ho, with a machete in his hand, threatened a pregnant woman by the name of Ogechi Chidiebere, a Nigerian resident in Ho.

Paul Avortide robbed the victim of her Gh¢ 3,000 and her Tecno Spark 30c mobile phone valued at Gh¢2,500 when she was on her way to attend antenatal care at the Ho Municipal Hospital.

On June 19, at about 6:00 pm, the Regional Police Intelligence team arrested Harmony Nbonu at the Ho Main Market, who was in possession of the stolen phone. During interrogations, he mentioned Paul Avortide as the one who sold the phone to him at the cost of Gh¢ 850.00.

Coordinated efforts between the Police and the suspect, Hormony Nbonu, led to the arrest of the convict, Paul Avortide, at Matse, a suburb of Ho, when he was running away from Ho Township. After police investigations, Paul Avortide was charged with the offence of robbery contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as amended by the Criminal Offences (Amendment) ACT, 2003 (ACT 646).

Harmony Nbonu, on the other hand, was charged with the offence of Dishonestly Receiving Contrary to Section 146 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The two were arraigned before Ho Circuit Court presided over by His Honour, Osman Abdul Hakeem, Esq., on Tuesday, July 1.

The first accused person (A1), Paul Avortide, pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery and was convicted on his own plea and sentenced to a prison term of 19 years in hard labor. The second accused person, (A2), Harmony Nbonu, was acquitted and discharged. The convict has since been handed over to the Ho Regional Prison authorities to begin to serve his prison term.

Meanwhile, three individuals believed to be involved in a robbery incident that occurred at Nyanikrom near Shama Junction on Wednesday, July 9, have been apprehended. The arrested suspects have been identified as Francis Mensah, alias Francis Kwaw (34); Ebenezer Cofie (32); and Samuel Bentum (35). The arrest was effected by the Western Regional Police Command following a targeted surveillance operation based on credible intelligence.

They received intel that the suspects, armed with insider information, were planning to rob officials of a company located at Nyanikrom. The intended target was company funds withdrawn from the bank for salary payments.

On the said date at about 12:00 p.m., staff of the company had withdrawn money from a bank in Takoradi. While returning to the company premises, they were ambushed near Unique School Junction at Nyanikrom by the suspects, who were on a motorbike and in an unregistered sedan vehicle.

The suspects forcibly broke the vehicle’s window and made away with the cash. Response by police personnel who had mounted surveillance in the area led to the arrest of three suspects and recovery of GHC 149,500.00.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Additionally, a company driver identified as Maxwell Kofi Yeboah, who is alleged to have conspired with the suspects, is currently at large and being pursued by the police. “The Western Regional Police Command assures the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all perpetrators to justice,” the police said in a statement.

Despite the heroic efforts by the Police to reduce the number of robbery cases, several lives of officers who were on duty have been lost. Presently, the exact number of police officers who have lost their lives while responding to a robbery incident is unknown.

A police officer was killed by armed robbers in Kwame Peprakrom in the Central Region in September 2024 after being ambushed. The government has introduced a GHC50,000 insurance scheme for officers who lose their lives while on duty.

  • There is no ongoing recruitment – Ghana Police

There is no ongoing recruitment – Ghana Police

The Ghana Police Service has dispelled claims of ongoing recruitment currently circulating on social media platforms.

In a statement, the security agency stated, “The Police Administration wishes to categorically state that this information is false. The Service has not announced any new recruitment exercise.”

Any recruitment exercise will be duly advertised through the official communication channels of the Service, including the official website, verified social media platforms, and in the national dailies, the Service noted.

The public has therefore been advised to disregard such fraudulent claims and desist from engaging with individuals or groups who promise recruitment opportunities in exchange for money.

“The public is encouraged to report any persons or groups engaged in these fraudulent activities to the nearest Police Station,” the statement added.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it is actively investigating these fraudulent activities.

Persons found to be involved in such illegal schemes will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

A number of state security institutions have distanced themselves from ongoing fake recruitment messages spreading across social media and unofficial websites.

The wave of fraudulent job adverts targeting Ghana’s youth has prompted strong warnings from several state security agencies.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has informed the public that it has not initiated any enlistment process. In a statement, the military said: “The general public is hereby informed that the Ghana Armed Forces is not undertaking any recruitments/enlistments yet.”

It described the circulating notices as “fake and should be ignored,” and reminded citizens that all official recruitments are only published in the Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times.

Also, the Ghana Prisons Service disassociated itself from a viral flier claiming to advertise positions for Prison Office Assistants (POAs) under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

The Service expressed no knowledge of the campaign, stating, “(it) strongly disassociates itself from this advertisement as it has no knowledge or information of the content on the flyer and cautions the public to treat this as fake news.”

It noted that any legitimate engagement with the YEA would be communicated through “reliable media releases.”

On its part, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has alerted the public to a fake recruitment scheme linked to a third-party website, GOLERNERSHUB.COM, which claims to be handling protocol recruitment for the Service.

The GIS said it has “not engaged any individual, group, or third-party website to conduct recruitment exercises or sell protocol forms on its behalf.”

It further clarified that no clearance has been issued by the government for any hiring exercise, and assured the public that updates will only be made through official and credible platforms. Investigations are underway to track down those behind the scheme in collaboration with national security.

The Ministry of the Interior has also taken notice of a fraudulent recruitment message circulating on social media, claiming to offer opportunities for recruitment into the Ghana Security Services through a “Data Gathering Form”.

According to the ministry, the link – https://forms.gle/TQ5pXEB22i1S1H5P9 – which cites a submission deadline of June 10, 2025, is unauthorised.

The Ministry of the Interior clarified that no recruitment is conducted via Google Forms or similar platforms, and thus entreated the general public to disregard “this fraudulent message and avoid clicking the provided link or sharing personal information.”

“Engaging with such links may result in identity theft, financial loss, or other cybercrimes,” the ministry warned, while entreating the public to report suspicious activities by contacting the ministry through its official channels: 0303- 956596; Email: info@mint.gov.gh, Facebook: Ministry of the Interior, Ghana; X: @MinterGh and its website: www.mint.gov.gh

  • What’s on the minds of Ghanaian voters explored in seven charts

What’s on the minds of Ghanaian voters explored in seven charts

Ghana is heading for its ninth general election since multiparty politics resumed in 1992.

In that time, there have been three peaceful transfers of power, with the two main parties – the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – holding the presidency for a total of 16 years each.

Here, in charts, are the big issues this time round as the NPP goes for an unprecedented third successive term in power.

A chart showing the increase in price of various foodstuffs in the 12 months from February 2023. Among the items mentioned are eggs which have gone up by 150%, tomatoes by 104% and yams by 67%.

Ghanaians were hit particularly hard in the pocket by the global bout of inflation, beginning in early 2022, which saw prices rise in the country at their fastest rate for more than two decades.

The annual rate of increase reached a peak of 54.1% in December 2022. It has since come down, but this is just an average and prices of some staples have continued to go up sharply.

Eggs and tomatoes, for instance, were more than twice as expensive in February 2024 as they were 12 months earlier. Other Ghanaian favourites have also shot up with wages not keeping pace.

Although the popular national dish – Ga kenkey (fermented maize dumplings) with fish – has not seen such a big jump, the balls of kenkey are now smaller.

As a result, more people have been pushed into poverty and living standards have suffered, the World Bank says.

A graph showing the increase in Ghana's public debt since 2000. There is a sharp rise from 2021 where it reached a peak of $60bn - it has since dropped to $50.9bn.

In 2022, Ghana defaulted on its debt repayments and was forced into lengthy negotiations with international lenders to try and restructure the loans, which are still ongoing.

Local lenders were forced into taking lower repayments.

The government also went to the International Monetary Fund to get help with a bailout programme.

President Nana Akufo-Addo admitted the country was in “crisis” but blamed outside forces. The opposition and some economists said it was down to economic mismanagement by the government.

The amount of money that Ghana owes its creditors has steadily risen for the last two decades, but there was a sharp uptick in 2019, and by 2022 the government needed more than 70% of its income just to service the debt.

A line graph showing the change in the unemployment rate from 2010 to 2023. It shows a steady increase from 2017, when it was 8.4% to 14.7% six years later.

The country’s economic difficulties have been accompanied by a steadily rising unemployment rate.

Going back two decades, one in 20 Ghanaians able to work were unemployed – that figure now stands at one in seven.

With more than half the population – some 24 million people – under the age of 35, young people have been particularly hard hit.

For 15-to-24-year-olds the unemployment rate is twice the overall figure, with nearly 30% without a job.

The views of younger voters could have a big impact on the outcome of the election.

A bar chart showing Ghana at the top of the list of African gold producers - with 115 tonnes in 2023. Also on the list are Mali - 105 tonnes, Burkina Faso - 99 tonnes and South Africa 97 tonnes.

As Africa’s largest – and the world’s 10th biggest – producer of the precious metal, gold plays a big role in the economy.

Gold mining has become a major talking point in the months leading up to the election, with complaints about the damage that small-scale and illegal mining is doing to the environment.

But with the global gold price more than doubling in the last decade, the attraction of getting involved in the business is obvious.

A pie chart showing what products Ghana's exports are made up of. In 2023, gold accounted for 45% of the exports, crude oil 24% and cocoa beans and paste, 9%.

Gold is a big foreign exchange earner for Ghana – in 2023, exports amounted to $5.2bn (£4.1bn).

Along with gold, the country has resources of oil, gas, diamonds, bauxite and lithium among other things.

It is also a big player in the global cocoa market, being the world’s second-largest supplier of the vital ingredient of chocolate.

These resources have transformed the economy over the past three decades and enabled the country to become much richer, with extreme poverty dropping by half in that time, World Bank experts have said.

A line graph showing the change in GDP per capita over the past three decades. It shows a sharp increase from 2005 when it was $400 to 2017 when it was $2,200 - but has barely changed since 2017.

The average annual income per person has gone through a dramatic shift since 2005, with the standard of living showing a marked increase up to 2017.

Since then, however, it has barely risen, except for a spike in 2021.

At election time, politicians have to contend with the fact that voters tend not to take the long-term view but generally base their choice on whether things are improving in the short term.

A chart showing parties' support in Ghana's presidential elections. It shows the share of support for the National Democratic Congress, New Patriotic Party and Others, between 1992 and 2020.

The last three decades have seen a series of closely fought and peaceful elections.

As a result, Ghana has often been held up as an example of an open democracy that has turned its back on instability and its own history of coups in a region where they are still an issue.

In some cases, elections hinged on just tens of thousands of votes and despite occasional legal challenges, the results have generally been accepted by the losers.

We expect to find out the results of this year’s race within three days of the 7 December election.

  • Ghana Police denies beating Oliver-Vormawor, says he only suffered ‘minor injuries’ during cell transfer

Ghana Police denies beating Oliver-Vormawor, says he only suffered ‘minor injuries’ during cell transfer

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims that its officers physically assaulted lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

In a press release issued on Sunday, October 20, the police clarified that Barker-Vormawor only suffered minor injuries during his transfer to a different cell. This transfer was deemed necessary after intelligence indicated that he might pose a risk to other inmates.

The police explained that the move was a precautionary measure to avert any potential incidents within the prison. This action followed Barker-Vormawor’s failure to satisfy the bail conditions set by the High Court on Wednesday, October 16, which meant he remained in custody.

Addressing the numerous allegations circulating on social media regarding an alleged physical assault, the police firmly denied these claims, asserting that no such abuse took place during his detention.

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to dismiss these unfounded accusations and to rely on credible information related to the situation.

“On October 19, 2024, the Police had intelligence that the accused was planning to compromise the security of other inmates and the Police Station.”

“The police, therefore, decided to transfer him to another cell, but he resisted after several persuasions.”

“In the attempt to handcuff him, he sustained minor scratches on his right hand. He was then taken to the hospital, where he was treated and discharged,” the statement said.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor was part of the 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested and detained for two weeks following their participation in an anti-illegal mining demonstration.

He was the last to be released on bail after three attempts.

62-year-old and 10-year-old arrested during demo against galamsey

During the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, the Ghana Police Service apprehended at least ten protesters, including a 62-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter.

The police cited traffic disruptions caused by the protesters’ choice of routes as the reason for the arrests.

The elderly woman stated, “I have not seen anything. I have not seen any statement. 62-year-old and 10-year-old arrested for saying no more galamsey. We have not committed a crime. We have not beaten anybody,” the 62-year-old woman said.

While the first day of the demonstration proceeded with some tension, the second day escalated into violence as participants defied police orders regarding specific routes.

In preparation for the protests, the police implemented a special operation, blocking key roads leading to the Jubilee House, which protesters aimed to occupy.

Numerous prominent Ghanaians joined the protests to voice their concerns over the government’s inaction on illegal mining, which is ravaging the nation’s forests and water bodies.

Recent reports indicate that the elderly woman and her daughter have since been released.

Democracy Hub organizers dismiss police’s suggested alternative routes for demo

The Democracy Hub, the group behind the upcoming protest on September 21, 2024, has rejected alternative routes suggested by the Ghana Police Service.

In discussions with the organizers, the police raised concerns about the initial route, emphasizing potential risks to public safety.

Following a court order prohibiting the demonstration at Revolution Square near the Jubilee House, the police asked for different locations.

The Democracy Hub proposed several sites, including the 37 roundabout, Airport roundabout, Opeibea intersection, Christ the King, and Arko Adjei interchange.

However, the police assessed these alternatives as still potentially hazardous to public safety, order, and essential services.

In response, the police offered seven new locations for consideration, such as the Cantonments Post Office-DVLA stretch, VAG Association junction-MTN Head office on Liberation Road, El Wak side park, Obra spot, Kawkudi park, Efia Sutherland Park, and the Trade Fair frontage.

Despite these suggestions, the organizers declined to compromise, resulting in no consensus being reached.

The police are now urging the organizers to reconsider their position and are encouraging public engagement with the protest leaders.

Police set up roadblocks, diversions for major security operation in Accra

The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of roadblocks and diversions in Accra from September 21 to 24, 2024, as part of a special security operation aimed at managing traffic and enhancing safety in the city.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the following routes will be impacted:

Access from the Central Business District (CBD) to Independence Avenue will be blocked at the AU Roundabout.

Traffic from the AU Roundabout will be redirected to Castle Road, leading to Ridge Roundabout, Kanda Highway, and Gold House Traffic Light. Alternatively, drivers can use Lokko Street to reach Independence Avenue towards Labone.

Vehicles coming from the AU Roundabout can turn right onto Second Avenue (GIJ) and proceed past the Police Headquarters to Dankwa Circle, then follow Cantonments Road to Ghana International School and continue on Second Circular Road to Giffard Road (El-Wak traffic light).

Traffic heading from Madina to Accra will be stopped at 37 Roundabout and rerouted via Obasanjo Highway to Gold House Traffic Light, proceeding onto Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway), Ridge Roundabout, and Castle Road to the CBD.

From 37 Roundabout, vehicles will be directed to Giffard Road (Burma Camp Road) to connect with Second Circular Road near Ghana International School and then to Cantonments Road and Dankwa Circle.

An alternative route for motorists includes Giffard Road towards Trade Fair, joining Beach Road to reach the CBD.

The Presidential Drive (behind TV3) will be blocked at Kanda Post Office Junction, and motorists will need to use Dr. Liman Highway for detours.

Traffic can also turn right to Obasanjo Highway, Gold House Traffic Light, and Dr. Liman Highway.

The section in front of Prudential Bank will be closed from Ring Road towards TV3.

Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will be present at key locations to assist with the changes. Pedestrians are advised to steer clear of the area from AU Roundabout to 37 Roundabout. Special arrangements will be made for access to the 37 Military Hospital, TV3, and local residents.

The police appreciate the public’s cooperation during this period. For further details, individuals can visit the police website or contact the emergency numbers provided.

Police greenlights NDC’s September 17 protest against EC

The Ghana Police Service has authorized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to proceed with their planned demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, September 17.

The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, confirmed this after a meeting with the Accra Regional Police Command.

He stated that all proposed routes for the protest were approved.

“We had a very good meeting with the regional police bosses and the agreement is that we are going to proceed with our demonstration on the 17th of this month. And it’s going to happen not just in Greater Accra but in all the other regions of the country at the same time.

“We wanted to have a confirmation about the endpoint – in terms of the route, we had an agreement that we are going to start from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, proceed through Farisco Traffic Light through to TUC, continue through the Ministry and come all the way to Parliament and end up in front of the premises of the Electoral Commission,” he said

The demonstration will begin at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, moving through Farisco Traffic Light, TUC, the Ministry, and Parliament, ultimately concluding in front of the Electoral Commission.

Kwetey emphasized that this demonstration is crucial as Ghana approaches significant elections.

“…There are issues and we are pressing for a forensic audit to be done, that’s actually the reason why we want to embark on this demonstration. As the NCO just rightly said, if there is nothing to hide, I think there should really be no problem at all, they should open their door and say come and check and be certain that there is nothing in order for the whole country to proceed knowing that everything is okay,” he added.

The NDC is calling for a forensic audit of the voter register to address concerns over its credibility and integrity.

The party believes that transparency is essential and that any issues with the register should be addressed openly.

Earlier, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah announced the nationwide protest, citing the EC’s refusal to audit the voter register and allegations of tampering and irregularities.

The NDC raised suspicions about the accuracy of the register, urging for a thorough examination to ensure its reliability for the upcoming elections.

Court goes after couple who defrauded landlady of GHC260,000

The Ghana Police Service is currently searching for Gifty Ansu Gyamfi and Stephen Appau, who are accused of defrauding their landlady of GH¢260,000 in Sakumono, Accra.

An Accra Circuit Court issued a bench warrant for their arrest on August 21, 2024.

The couple, Gyamfi, a trader, and Appau, a miner, allegedly took the money from their landlady under the false promise of supplying gold but failed to deliver.

They face charges of conspiracy and fraud.

Despite being notified, Gyamfi and Appau missed their initial court date and were absent again on September 4, 2024.

This continued absence has kept the bench warrant in effect.

The case involves Doris Animah Tando, a Sakumono businesswoman who rented to the couple. In 2022, they reportedly took GH¢260,000 from Tando for gold that was never provided.

Appau vanished after collecting the money, and efforts to recover it or the gold were unsuccessful.

Gifty was arrested and claimed she received only GH¢60,000 from Tando, with the rest going to Appau.

Although Appau was repeatedly summoned by the police, he avoided attendance, offering a written commitment to repay the money by March 2024, which he did not honor.

The police are working to serve him with a criminal summons.

This group included 257 women and 230 men.

The suspects were found in a residence near Kenyasi in Kumasi’s suburb.

Preliminary investigations revealed that these individuals had been luring people nationwide with promises of high returns on their investments through the fraudulent scheme.

Authorities seized registration documents and other materials marked with the QNET logo from the suspects.

Among those detained are twelve key figures identified as leaders of the scheme: Gyereh Evelyn, Francis Kpesah, Samuel Musah, Simon Yakubu, Thomas Kotual, Kwasi Nyabi, Benjamin Nsigma, Elijah Musah, Moses Katu, John Balabon Tagnakibi, James Nogma, and Fidelis Bang-ib.

They are currently being held by the police and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

The police have issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to such schemes.

  • Residents of Komenda to stage protest over Sugar Factory lease to Indian investors on August 13

Residents of Komenda to stage protest over Sugar Factory lease to Indian investors on August 13

Concerned Citizens of Komenda Traditional Area have informed the Ghana Police Service about their upcoming demonstration on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

This protest aims to demand the annulment of the lease agreement for the Komenda Sugar Factory with an Indian company.

In a press release, the group highlighted issues such as non-compliance with procedural requirements and lack of stakeholder engagement as significant concerns.

They also urged the government to halt the importation of raw sugar and restore the factory’s original purpose of using local sugarcane from outgrowers.

Samuel Awudzah, the group’s convenor, stated that around 2,000 participants from the Komenda Traditional Area and nearby regions are expected to join the demonstration.

Awudzah noted that the protest adheres to Section 1, Clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), which requires notifying the police at least five days before any public event.

Meanwhile, Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond announced on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, that the government plans to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to Indian investors for approximately 20 years to revive the defunct facility.

He added that the lease agreement could be renewed once the contract is finalized.

K.T. Hammond revealed that the government had spent GH¢45 million to keep the factory operational.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, which was handed over to a strategic investor in November 2019 after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus, has been idle since May 2016.

The $35 million factory was inaugurated by former president John Dramani Mahama, but it ceased operations due to multiple issues, including an insufficient supply of sugarcane in the area, as stated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in September 2018.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will inaugurate a 320-unit housing project for the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, 23 July 2024, at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra.

The housing project, which began in 2018, includes seven blocks of two-bedroom apartments and thirteen blocks of three-bedroom apartments, each containing sixteen units.

Alongside the residential blocks, the development features a multipurpose sports facility, a kindergarten, and additional support facilities.

In a press release issued on Friday, 19 July 2024, and signed by Elvis Adjei-Baah, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Ministry emphasized the project’s importance.

“The completion and utilization of this housing project will augment the government’s other housing programmes that are being rolled out to increase the residential stock of public service workers,” the statement read.

It said the project represents a substantial effort by government to enhance the living conditions of public service workers and to address the housing deficit in the country.

The Ministry further emphasized that this initiative is a critical step towards reducing accommodation challenges in Ghana’s urban areas. “This project will reduce accommodation challenges in our sprawling cities and ultimately bridge the national housing deficit, which stands at 1.8 million housing units,” the release noted.

The newly constructed housing units are set to significantly improve accommodation for police personnel and enhance their overall welfare, which will, in turn, support them in carrying out their duties more efficiently.

The event is expected to mark a significant milestone, showcasing the government’s dedication to meeting the housing needs of its citizens.

‘Don’t rebuke presenter who confessed to sleeping with minor on radio’ – Counsellor Lutterodt to Ghanaians

Counsellor Lutterodt‘s recent remarks in a viral video are stirring discussion online.

Instead of condemning a presenter who confessed on live radio to inappropriate behavior with a minor, Luterodt suggests that Ghanaians should focus on the deeper message he was trying to convey.

Rather than merely acknowledging wrongdoing, Luterodt believes the presenter was expressing genuine remorse, particularly influenced by his own daughter’s similar experience.

Luterodt urges a more empathetic approach, suggesting that the presenter’s regretful acknowledgment should be understood as a call to reflection rather than harsh criticism.

“Let’s not go hard on the Presenter. He acknowledged his wrongdoing, I believe he was passing a message across. Lets not go hard because he acknowledged regret for his action,” Counsellor Luterodt stated.

The Ghana Police Service has today July 16,2024 arrested suspect, Nana Poku Piesie alias Kwabena, who was seen in a viral video claiming to have had sexual intercourse with a minor.

The suspect is currently in custody assisting police investigations.

This was announced by the police in statement on July 16 a day after the viral video of the man confessing on-air about sleeping with a minor emerged on social media.

In a viral video on social media, the presenter speaking on Sompa FM shared a story about how he engaged in a sexual relationship with a girl from age 14 when she was in primary six until she completed her secondary school education.

“I had sex with one 14-year-old a few years ago. Her father is a wealthy man in Dormaa Ahenkro. I slept with her so much… She was very voluptuous. I had sex with her multiple times from when she was in class 6 until she completed Kumasi SHS. Oh Kwame, sinning is not good,” he reflected.

His confession came up during a discussion on the show about the nature of Karma. He shared his experience saying “Now after my daughter also got to that level, I noticed one teacher had also started engaging her inappropriately, and so I complained about it to my wife, and then she reminded me of my past sin with the other girl.”

“She asked what age the girl was when I had sex with her, and then I said she was about 14-15 years old. Then she asked me how I got hold of her. I said it was through extra classes and by the time I knew it, I had broken her virginity. And then my wife responded, do you know God has paid you back? I thought about it and told her she was right. The law of natural karma. It hurt me,” he mentioned.

There was a widespread condemnation of the video with celebrities like Sarkodie and Lydia Forson calling for his arrest.
In a tweet, Sarkodie said “I sense no hate here; he should not be walking around freely.”

He described how he had sex with her multiple times, starting from when she was in class 6 until she completed Kumasi Senior High School.

To authenticate his experience, he began narrating how he found himself on the wrong side of the law with a 14-year-old primary school student.

“I had sex with one 14-year-old a few years ago. Her father is a wealthy man in Dormaa Ahenkro.” he started.

Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, popularly known as Chef Smith, was detained by the Ghana Police Service shortly after announcing his new Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking marathon.

The arrest took place just before a scheduled press conference.

Benny, Chef Smith’s manager, reported that a group, including musician Nana Boroo, approached the team claiming to have been part of the initial support group for Chef Smith’s cooking marathon.

“We were about to start our press conference at La Palm Royal Beach when a group, led by Nana Boroo, approached us,” Benny explained on Hitz FM. “

They claimed to have supported Chef Smith during his Cook-a-thon. Initially, we agreed to discuss the matter at the reception, but they later insisted on speaking with Chef Smith privately in their car, which we did not agree to.”

This disagreement escalated, leading to the involvement of the police and Chef Smith’s subsequent detention.

Chef Smith completed a marathon cooking session on March 6, 2023, achieving an impressive 820 hours of continuous cooking. He revealed this accomplishment during a press conference at the La Palm Beach Hotel on July 2, 2024.

The entrance to the conference room featured a banner that read: “Press Conference. Unveiling the New World Cook-a-Thon Record Holder. Millennium Chef Smith from Ghana with an incredible 802 hours, 25 minutes, dethroning Irish King, Alan Fisher.”

Despite these claims, the Guinness World Records official website still lists Alan Fisher as the record holder, with a time of 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds.

  • If found guilty, Lil Win could face 5 years in prison – Martin Kpebu on accident case

If found guilty, Lil Win could face 5 years in prison – Martin Kpebu on accident case

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has provided an in-depth analysis of the charges brought against actor LilWin by the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The police have charged the Kumawood actor with dangerous driving and negligently causing harm in an accident that resulted in the tragic death of three-year-old Tawiah Ampomah.

Kpebu explained that if found guilty, LilWin could face imprisonment or a fine. He noted that, based on past cases, it is more common for offenders to receive fines rather than prison sentences.

“In terms of penalties, imprisonment is possible, but fines are typically imposed. However, in particularly severe cases, imprisonment can occur, and it can be up to five years,” Kpebu stated during an interview with Joy FM.

The lawyer suggested that, considering the loss of life, jail terms should be seriously considered as a punishment for road accidents.

“We don’t often charge them with manslaughter. So, is it reckless, dangerous driving, etc.? Yes. Over the past decade, more than 2000 people have died annually in road accidents. Yet, we don’t see drivers being imprisoned for years.”

LilWin was taken into police custody on Monday, June 3, 2024, following his discharge from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He has since been granted bail worth GH¢50,000, with the case adjourned to June 27, 2024.

The accident involving LilWin occurred on May 25, 2024, in front of Grace Baptist Church in Amakom, Kumasi. LilWin’s Benz collided head-on with another vehicle, resulting in injuries to some passengers and causing the tragic death of a three-year-old boy.

All injured parties, including LilWin, were promptly transported to the Accident and Emergency Unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Despite his injuries, the actor made a resilient appearance at the premiere of his new movie, “A Country Called Ghana,” at the KNUST CCB Auditorium later that day.

Following the incident, LilWin’s management pledged their full support to the bereaved family after the tragic loss of the child.

‘Fake’ CID officer dupes over 200 Berekum residents

Around 200 inhabitants of Berekum East in the Bono Region are actively pursuing Elizabeth Akwah, 43, who allegedly impersonated a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer from the Ghana Police Service.

Elizabeth Akwah reportedly arrived in Berekum East and asserted her false identity via the local information center, claiming to be a CID official tasked with investigating a recent local crime involving the alleged murder of a two-year-old child.

As reported by Rainbow Radio’s regional correspondent, Kwame, on June 1, Elizabeth also purported that her mother ran a savings and loans company, offering financial assistance to residents in need.

She successfully enlisted approximately 200 residents seeking loans and registered them for loan disbursement. However, following a dispute with some of the residents employed to aid in the registration process, Elizabeth absconded with the funds, leaving no trace of her whereabouts.

Despite efforts to locate her, Elizabeth remains elusive. The defrauded residents are resolute in their pursuit of justice and the recovery of their lost funds.

“When she came to Berekum, she went to the information center to announce that she is the CID officer who had come there to investigate the crime involving Bismark, who is alleged to have killed his two-year-old son.

“She also said her mother gives loans, so aside from the CID work, she also helps those in need of loans. She gave investors a receipt and told them of a 10% payment before the disbursement of the loan and promised them the money would be disbursed within a day,” Kwame explained.

  • If Lil Win is found guilty, he must be punished – Ola Michaels on death of 3-year-old boy

If Lil Win is found guilty, he must be punished – Ola Michaels on death of 3-year-old boy

Media figure Ola Michael has urged the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to ensure fairness in their investigation of the accident involving actor Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as LilWin, which tragically led to the death of three-year-old Tawiah Ampomah.

Michael adviseD the public to refrain from making premature judgments and to await the police’s findings after their thorough investigation.

He emphasizes that despite LilWin’s status as a well-known actor, justice should be served without bias if he is found responsible for the accident.

“Listening to the deceased’s father, he said his son was thrown to the front seat when the crash happened. We all know that if the child was not using a seat belt while sitting at the back, this would occur… I think we should be measured in our criticisms and exercise patience for the police to investigate the case and identify who caused it.

“However, if they find out that it’s LilWin’s fault, the law should deal with him appropriately, there should not be any favoritism. Regardless of his personality. The same way the law should deal with the deceased boy’s father if he is found culpable,” he told MzGee during the United Showbiz programme aired on UTV.

Speaking on the United Showbiz program on UTV, Michael pointed out the importance of patience in letting the authorities determine the cause of the accident and hold accountable whoever is at fault, including LilWin if proven guilty.

The accident involving LilWin’s car occurred on May 25, 2024, in front of Grace Baptist Church in Amakom, Kumasi.

The collision with another vehicle resulted in injuries to LilWin and two others, all of whom were promptly taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

Despite his injuries, LilWin managed to attend the premiere of his new movie, “A Country Called Ghana,” at the KNUST CCB Auditorium later that same day.

In the midst of this tragedy, LilWin’s management has pledged support for the bereaved family in the wake of the child’s untimely passing.

  • I was unfairly arrested for smoking wee – Kwaw Kese threatens to sue Ghana Police

Hiplife artist Emmanuel Kofi Botwe known popularly as Kwaw Kese has declared his intention to take legal action against the Ghana Police Service, asserting that his 2014 arrest for alleged public marijuana smoking was unjust.

In an exclusive interview on Hitz FM, Kwaw Kese claimed the police lacked evidence for his arrest and treated him unfairly.

Asserting that he possesses evidence implicating foreign nationals openly smoking with police protection, the musician disclosed his plans, alongside his legal representation, to seek a $1 million compensation from the Police Service for his 2015 arrest and conviction.

“There’s nothing to show to prove that I was smoking [in public]. I can show you proof of foreign nationals smoking in public with police protecting them with guns. Ghana Police did not treat me right, and these are some of the things I see and I say that Ghana police service did not treat me right,” Kwaw Kese stated in the interview with host Andy Dosty.

Expressing his belief that the ordeal he faced during his police custody was undeserved, Kwaw Kese emphasised the impact on his music career, which brings joy to his fans.

The Hiplife musician, arrested in November 2014 for cannabis smoking, is determined to seek justice and financial compensation for what he perceives as an unjust experience.

High Court judge William Boampong sentenced Kwaw Kese to a day in jail in April 2015 and ordered him to pay a fine of Gh¢1,200.

The musician was on remand for over a month at the Kumasi Central Prison before being bailed on December 30, 2014.

During the Year of Return in 2020, Kwaw Kese expressed his displeasure when Jamaican musician Popcaan was seen smoking what was suspected to be marijuana publicly while touring Ghana with no subsequent action from the Police.

“Only in Ghana foreigners can f**k up like this. When @kwawkese smoked in public he was arrested. So this means our law set only to control on the citizens but foreigners are free to go. The most painful part is Ghana police. None of them was able to speak the truth out because of the small coins which will be given out … Ooh Ghana,” Kwaw Kese had said at the time.

  • Dampare, others face GHS253k fine over assault on a man by police officers

Dampare, others face GHS253k fine over assault on a man by police officers

The High Court in Accra has delivered a landmark ruling, compelling the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare and three others to pay a total sum of GHS253,709 in damages to a victim of police brutality.

Isaac Manu, a father of four and a Welder, was awarded compensation after suffering assault by a police officer, resulting in severe physical and psychological trauma, including the inability to have an erection.

The judgment, presided over by Justice Kwasi Adjenin-Boateng, found the police officer guilty of applying “unreasonable force” during Manu’s arrest in 2016, based on mere suspicion of theft of a KIA Sportage car from his former employer.

Manu’s pursuit for justice commenced on May 31, 2019, when he filed a Writ of Summons and Statement of Claim against the Defendants, which included the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General, Vivian Adeoku, Matthew Adrah, and Kwesi Asare.

In his legal action, Manu sought various forms of compensation, including general damages for assault, special damages covering medical expenses incurred as a result of the assault, compensation for psychological trauma, loss of earnings from the date of the incident to the present, loss of livelihood, aggravated damages due to the assault’s severe impact on his sexual function, and costs.

Represented by Richmond Korley Esq., Manu’s case underscored the egregious nature of police brutality and the significant impact it can have on individuals’ lives.

The defendants, represented by Gideon Agyapong Sabeng, Assistant State Attorney, were unable to refute the evidence presented by Manu’s legal team, leading to the court’s ruling in favor of the plaintiff.

The judgment serves as a significant victory for victims of police brutality, highlighting the importance of accountability and justice in cases of law enforcement misconduct. It sends a clear message that excessive use of force by law enforcement officials will not be tolerated and that victims have the right to seek redress through the legal system.

    Plaintiff’s case:

It was the case of the Plaintiff that he is a welder and a father of four and he used to work in the 5th Defendant’s (Kwesi Asabre) workshop at Kasoa but stopped working there in October, 2016 as a result of a misunderstanding.

He said that on October 22, 2016, he was driving a KIA Sportage car with his son when Asabre (his former boss) also driving a car signaled him to stop which he did and parked his car beside the road.

According to the Plaintiff, Asabre (5th Defendant) also parked his car but observed that the 4th Defendant (Matthew Adrah) and a man in mufti emerged from the Asabre’s car and without uttering a word to the Plaintiff “started beating him whilst referring to him as a thief.”

The Plaintiff averred when he asked about what he had stolen, he was not told but they continued to beat him and hit his face with handcuffs resulting in deep cuts at the Plaintiff’s chin, lower lip, and forehead and injury to his left eye and his shirt stained with blood from the cuts he sustained.

The plaintiff further stated that Matthew Adrah (4th Defendant) handcuffed him whilst he was still bleeding and later took him to the Kasoa Police Station in Asabre’s car.

He added that when the counter officer on duty at the said police station enquired from Asabre and the other man what the Plaintiff had done, they responded that the Plaintiff had stolen KIA Sportage car.

    Hospital:

The Plaintiff told the Court that it was at the Police station where he got to know the crime he was accused of and for which reason he had been beaten.

He also said, the Counter Officer told Asabre to take him to the hospital, where the wounds were stitched to stop the bleeding.

The Plaintiff stated that a day after the incident, October 23, 2016, he reported at the Kasoa Police Station where a meeting was held among the Plaintiff, the station officer, Vivian Adeoku (3rd Defendant), Adrah, and Asabre during which the Station Officer informed the Plaintiff that Asabre complained that the Plaintiff broke into his workshop and stole a KIA Sportage car.

But, Asabre he said, denied making a report of stealing but rather reported that the Plaintiff owed him GH¢600.00.

    Eye surgery:

The Plaintiff said he subsequently went to the Lapaz Community Hospital where his left eye was examined and he was given medication but he could still not see with the left eye.

He said, the doctor informed him that his left eye was permanently damaged and he also had blood in his urine.

The Plaintiff again said he went to Agogo Presby Hospital in the Ashanti Region for a second opinion on the condition of his left eye.

After a medical examination at Agogo, he said he was transferred to the Emmanuel Eye Clinic in Accra, from where he was again referred to Saint Thomas Eye Clinic.

After examination at Saint Thomas Eye Clinic, he said surgery was prescribed but he could not afford the surgery.

    Erectile dysfunction:

He stated that he later underwent a fresh medical examination at Saint Thomas Eye Clinic and the report stated that two surgeries could restore partial sight to his left eye.

According to him, surgeries were performed on the left eye but he is still having difficulties with his sight and it is affecting his right eye.

It is the case of the Plaintiff that he has not been able to have an erection after the beating suffered at the hands of the Adrah Defendant.

The plaintiff stated that after the beatings, he had collapsed on more than two occasions and also had not been able to work since October 22, 2016 and that he had spent his entire life savings and borrowed huge sums for his medical treatment.

    Minimal reasonable force:

It was the case of the 1st to 4th Defendants that Adrah with a civilian employee attempted to arrest the Plaintiff after informing the Plaintiff that he was under arrest.

According to the Defendants, in resisting lawful arrest by the Adrah the Plaintiff became very “violent and a scuffle ensued.”

The Adrah (4th Defendant) was mindful of his duty to exercise minimal reasonable force in effecting an arrest, and exercising this minimum force enabled the Plaintiff to overcome the Adrah subsequently throwing him onto the ground.

The Defendants argued that, as a police civilian employee, John Mensah Sarbah came to Adrah’s aid by separating the Plaintiff from the 4th Defendant, and in the process the Plaintiff bit the right thigh of the said civilian employee.

They contended that the Plaintiff suffered a minor injury of a bruise over his left eye and was treated and discharged.

The Defendants again stated the injury was a result of the 4th Defendant’s lawful use of force for the prevention or defence against the criminal offence of unlawful resistance of lawful arrest by the Plaintiff.

According to the Defendants, the Plaintiff was subsequently given a police Medical Report Form to be presented to any government hospital, and the report was returned to the Kasoa Police but the Plaintiff rather returned the said form to PIPS instead of to the Kasoa police.

In the said report, the Plaintiff was diagnosed as having a traumatic eye condition and he was treated and discharged, the said condition was said to be improving when the Plaintiff went for further review and therefore the Plaintiff’s claims and reliefs are unwarranted, baseless, and unfounded.

The defendant concluded that the 3’d Defendant was not present and did not take part in the arrest of the Plaintiff and the ensuing scuffle that resulted due to the plaintiff’s resistance

    By Court:

Justice Adjenin-Boateng in his judgment said, it is the considered view of the court that Matthew Adrah (4th Defendant), as a police officer is entitled to use reasonable force to effect the arrest of suspects including the Plaintiff herein.

However, “it is my considered view and I so find that in the instant case the force used by the 4th Defendant to effect the arrest of the Plaintiff was unreasonable and accordingly the Plaintiff is entitled to judgment.

The Court entered judgment for the Plaintiff as follows; General damages GH¢10,000.00, Special damages GH¢43,709.00, Damages for loss of livelihood and pain and suffering and psychological trauma (Compensation) GH¢200,000.00.

The Court also awarded a cost of GH¢20,000 against the Attorney General, IGP, and Matthew Adrah (1st, 2nd, and 4th Defendant), jointly and severally in favour of the Plaintiff.

Meanwhile, the court awarded the cost of GH¢5,000,00 against Plaintiff in favour of Vivian Adeoku, (3rd Defendant).

During a press briefing held on February 6, 2024, the GJA, alongside other key media bodies such as the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), collectively threatened to take action if the NPP and police fail to address the matter promptly.

The media groups demanded justice for Alabira and called on the NPP leadership at both national and regional levels to hold the MP and his associates accountable for their alleged actions. They urged swift action to ensure that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.

In their statement, the media bodies emphasized the urgency of the situation, giving the NPP and the Ghana Police Service a ten-day ultimatum to respond. They called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and emphasized the need for thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.

“We are giving the NPP, Regional and National, and the Ghana Police Service ten (10) days ultimatum each to hear from them. They should arrest the perpetrators. If they fail, we shall advise ourselves,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the groups highlighted the importance of accountability and urged the Ghana Police Service to expedite their investigation into the matter. They stressed the significance of ensuring that such incidents do not go unpunished and called for the perpetrators to be brought before the court to face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, Farouk Mahama has denied the allegations of assault on the journalist and has threatened to take legal action against his accuser. The situation remains tense as stakeholders await responses from the NPP leadership and the Ghana Police Service within the stipulated timeframe.

    Police Officer duped GHS15.8k

An officer within the Ghana Police Service is reaching out to a local radio station for assistance in recovering a sum of GHS15,800.

This payment was made to a civilian who had promised to supply a car part but failed to fulfill the order, dating back to the year 2023.

The officer’s appeal on the radio station underscores the challenges individuals can face, even within law enforcement, when dealing with fraudulent transactions.

During an appearance on Sompa FM’s Sompa Nkomo program, the officer elucidated that, alongside a friend, he embarked on a journey to buy a car in Kumasi. Unfortunately, while returning to Enchi, the vehicle caught fire, resulting in the destruction of certain components.

After contacting the car seller about the incident, he disclaimed any responsibility and proposed a legal resolution, a proposition the police officer rejected. Following the advice of his friend, the officer decided to bear the repair costs himself.

While the vehicle was stationed at a mechanic shop, the individual suspected of selling car parts came across it and contacted the officer, presenting himself as a businessman who imports spare parts from Dubai.

Relying on his mechanic’s endorsement, the police officer affirmed that he consented to enlist the assistance of the purported businessman, identified as Francis Nsiah alias Akwes. The purpose was to facilitate the importation of the damaged car part from Dubai.

“On April 4, he called me that he had arrived in Dubai and the converted price of the part in Ghanaian cedi was GHC14,800 with an additional charge of GHS2,900.

“He proposed that he was receiving some payment from someone back in Ghana and so he will let me send the payment through that individual to cut down the cost of the charge.

“He sent me the person’s number which I confirmed and he demanded that I add GH¢1,000 to the amount to make it GH¢15,800 to be added to his to send. I sent the money and he confirmed receipt of payment,” he stated.

He added that Nsiah promised that shipping of the part will take a period of three months to arrive in Ghana.

However, after waiting for three months, he received series of stories from Nsiah. Upon reaching out to find out the status of the shipment, he realise that he had been duped by the suspect.

The officer said he has since utilised all legal avenues including filing a formal complaint against the suspect to retrieve his money but without success.

“I made a formal complaint which led the case to be called at the Enchi Magistrate Court, the court gave an order for an itemised bill to be retrieved from MTN showing the vendor who received the payment on his behalf. The vendor was picked up and brought to Enchi but since he had only played the role of receiving and forwarding the money to him in Dubai, he was not complicit. The vendor however agreed to assist us since he had been doing business with him. He led us to his workshop around Glory Hill Hotel at Santasi Roundabout in Kumasi. His apprentice told us that he had not returned and we waited for him without success.

“I have done everything on part as a police officer without success. A friend told me that your programme could help me retrieve the money which is my I have come here,” he stated in a live phone call.

The police did the right thing. If he should have retaliated, that would be another story

    @phoenix_bld_

The disrespect is too much these days, and to top it off a civilian had to neutralise the culprit for him facepalm‍♂️

    @ericboatenggh

I like the fact that the officer didn’t react

    @CdoreIsRed

Bro, the police acted very well, he would have been in the mortuary if he did this in America

    @_adomAsante

The officer is not weak. The criminal is still in his grasp, how is that weakness? No matter how fearsome or strong you may be as an officer, in your line of duty, you will meet that one person who will challenge you either mentally unstable or just brave. It is everywhere.
