The Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NORCC), Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku, who gave the commendation, said personnel of the service had played critical roles since Ghana recorded its first case of COVID-19 and their contribution towards the fight against the pandemic needed to be recognised.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

    Hint

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Frederick Adu Anim, said at about 2 a.m. on May 8, 2020, the command received information that a white Kia Morning, with registration number GE-2269-20, had been snatched from its owner at gunpoint at Ablekuma Bokorbokor, near Awoshie.

The suspects had apparently hired the services of the driver of the vehicle from Baah Yard to Ablekuma CP, but attacked and snatched the vehicle from him before he could reach the destination.

A team of police personnel that was dispatched after receiving the information intercepted the suspects in the stolen vehicle at Busia Junction, Odorkor.

However, a hot chase ensued when the suspects sped off upon seeing the police.

In the course of the drama, the suspects started shooting at the police who also returned fire.

In the process, Yeboah was injured in the right leg, while his two accomplices escaped.

    Swoop

Later, Mr Adu Anim said, police intelligence revealed that the two who escaped were hiding at Dansoman Exhibition.

The suspects again engaged the police in a shoot out at their hideout but came out worse with injuries.

The police team took the suspects to the Police Hospital for treatment but they were pronounced dead shortly on arrival at the hospital.

  • Mob attacks Adabraka Police Station; 3 Cops injured

Three policemen were injured and four vehicles damaged when a mob attacked the Adabraka Police Station in Accra last Wednesday.

The mob also dumped the lifeless body of a man — believed to be aged between 35 and 40 years — at the Charge Office of the police station.

As of press time yesterday, the police were yet to establish the cause of the attack.

Investigations were, however, ongoing to establish the link between the attack and a supposed freak incident involving a man who jumped into the Odaw River and died less than two hours before the mob action.

Meanwhile, four suspects, have been arrested.

    Attack

The Nima Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abraham Acquaye, told the Daily Graphic that the attack on the Adabraka Police Station took place around 5:30 p.m. last Wednesday when a mob, comprising some young men and women, pelted the station with stones as they marched onto the premises.

In the process, he said, the mob vandalised an official police Nissan Navara pick-up, two privately owned Toyota saloon cars and a Daewoo taxi which were parked close to the police station.

He said the Accra Regional Police Operations Unit, the Nima Divisional Police Operations and other patrol teams were called in to bring the situation under control, but before the patrol teams arrived the mob had left.

The body of the dead man, who was later identified only as Sammy, was conveyed to the Police Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

    Suspicion

Mr Acquaye said earlier at about 4 p.m. that same day, a policeman (whose name has been withheld by the police) had gone to a garage at Odawna, a community within Adabraka, to take delivery of his vehicle which he had taken to a mechanic for repairs.

He said as the policeman walked towards the garage, an unidentified man jumped into the Odaw River, seemingly on seeing the uniformed policeman.

The Nima Divisional Police Commander said the policeman suspected that the man thought that he (the policeman) was there to arrest him.

Almost immediately after the man jumped into the river, Mr Acquaye said, a group of young men emerged from the community, assaulted the policeman and tore his uniform.

He was, however, rescued by two of his colleagues and he later reported the incident to the Adabraka Police Station, claiming that he could identify his assailants.

Mr Acquaye said investigations were underway and the police had mounted a search for the perpetrators.

  • Adabraka: Two arrested for vandalizing police station

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two residents of Adabraka for vandalising a police station in the area.

The two were part of an angry mob that stormed the police station yesterday [Wednesday] to protest the death of a man who fell and drowned in the Odaw River while being pursued by police who were trying to arrest him.

In a Citi News interview, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frederick Adu Anim said the incident is currently being investigated.

“We are investigating this. We will give subsequent updates.”

He also refuted the claim that police personnel were responsible for the death.

“No he [the deceased] was not chased by police officers. The place is a hideout for criminals so no police officer could go there and make an arrest. “

The Assemblyman for the area, Hendrick Noble Kinnah had early on told Citi News that he heard of the incident on Wednesday evening at around 5:41 PM.

He further said some residents accused the police of causing the death, saying “it is the policeman who pushed him into the water [the drain].”

Upon hearing of the incident, the assemblyman said he first made his way to the Adabraka police station where he saw a police officer who had been assaulted.

  • Wife and boyfriend hatched three plots to kill husband

It has emerged that the wedded wife who plotted with her boyfriend to kill her husband, had hatched three plans to execute their ploy.

Mavis Brepor, 32, and Patrick Asare, 50, were arrested last Saturday after contracting ‘an assassin’ to kill David Gator, 52, to whom she had been married for 13 years with three children.

Their plan, however, could not materialise because Asare, while recruiting the would be assassin, mistakenly called the Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah for the role.

Giving details of the arrest at a press briefing on Wednesday, ACP Duah, said when he realised that the call was a mistake, he feigned interest in the deal for which Asare offered GH₵100,000 to finish the job.

“In intelligence, that information was like a pot of gold to us and it was important we manage it well and that is what we did,” he said Thursday in a later interview on Accra-based radio station, Citi FM.

He said the assassination was to be carried out on Saturday, May 2.

According to ACP Duah, the suspects had been in a relationship for about six months and had done a blood covenant.

He said the two “had vowed to live together forever and the best way for them to live forever was to eliminate the husband.”

He said there were three plans but the first plan, which was to poison the man with powdered bottles could not be executed because Gator often ate together with his children wife.

“Plan B was to get someone to kill him. If we had not swiftly moved in on the day of planned killing, this man [Asare] would have gone to Nima to get some thugs to come and kill him. That was the plan C,” ACP Duah said.

He said after the arrest of Asare, “We went to the house of Mr Gator and the man was eating with the wife but unknown to him, the wife and the boyfriend had planned to kill him.”

He said when he broke the news to him, Gator broke down in tears and enquired from his wife what wrong he had done to warrant such an act from her.

ACP Duah attributed the arrest of Asare and Mavis to the handiwork of God, saying, “He would have been dead by now if God had not been on his side and if the call had gone to the wrong person.”

  • Well clamp down on persons who flout COVID-19 prevention protocols Police

The Accra Regional Police Command says it will continue to arrest and prosecute individuals in the region who refuse to comply with precautionary measures to fight the spread of COVID-19.

According to the command, an earlier operation conducted by the police has resulted in the arrest of 500 commercial motorbike riders who failed to wear face masks.

Speaking to the media, Director of Operations at the Accra Regional Police Command, ACP Kwesi Ofori said the exercise will continue in a bid to ensure that the security and safety of the country are not compromised amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“Those who feel they are not prepared to sacrifice for the state to assist in ensuring good health and public security we are going to clamp down on them seriously. We will arrest them and put them before court. Okada riders have also tried to abuse this protocol and we have arrested about 500 motorbikes, most of whom have been taken to court and fined GH¢12,000 in default four years imprisonment.”

Following the lifting of the partial lockdown imposed on some parts of the country, the role of the police have changed to ensuring compliance with other COVID-19 prevention protocols such as wearing of face masks and urge to avoid needless movement.

Earlier this week, persons without face masks were prevented from entering the Central Business District of Accra.

The move was to ensure compliance  directives by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and Ministry of Health on the wearing of masks in public as a way of stopping the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Accra Regional Alpha SWAT Commander DSP Sulamana Sulley, security officials are primarily engaging and encouraging those coming into the Central Business District to wear the mask.

He said those who are adamant and insist on proceeding without the mask are denied access and asked to either get one or returned home.

Meanwhile, commercial vehicle drivers have been cautioned against allowing persons without masks to board their vehicles.

  • Carjackers on the loose, be cautious – Police to public

The Accra Regional Police Command has issued a public alert, especially to taxicab drivers, about the activities of carjackers in the metropolis.

The police said although the mode of operations may vary, a common trend is that one or two members of the syndicate hire the services of a taxicab to a particular destination.

Mid-way through the journey, other accomplices board the vehicle and then conspire to snatch the vehicle at gunpoint.

The alert follows the arrest of some five suspected carjackers in Accra.

“Appropriate steps have been taken to prosecute the suspects, however, the Command cautions the general public to be informed of such criminal activities in order to prevent possible theft of their vehicles.

“Beware if juicy offers, especially at night; reject services to outlandish areas, seek police assistance at snap checkpoints on the least suspicion. If possible, use automobile tracking devices,” the alert signed by ASP Efia Tenge, the PRO of the Accra Regional Police Command said.

  • 130 Riders arrested for violating social distancing protocol

The Accra Regional Police Command has intensified its operation to arrest recalcitrant members of the public who are flouting the social distancing directive as well as perpetuating crime.

Within two days, the police have impounded more than 130 motorbikes and arrested some riders in various parts of Accra for breaching the directive aimed at reducing the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Also, four suspected robbers are currently being held by the police after they were arrested for allegedly attacking some individuals in some streets in parts of Accra.

    Caution

Following the lifting of the partial lockdown directive, the police last Wednesday cautioned the general public that its operation to clamp down on people who defied the directive, particularly, on social distancing would continue.

It also said they would continue to look out for criminals, and urged the public to comply with the directives and general law and order.

    Operation social distancing

In a special operation, dubbed “Operation Social Distancing,” a team of policemen swooped on motorbike riders violating the directive in and around Tudu, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange, Ministries enclave, UTC, Kimbu and Tema Station, all in Accra.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Frederick Adu Anim, said motorbike riders were banned from picking a pillion rider in order to observe the social distancing protocol as part of measures to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

He said the command observed that almost immediately after the partial lockdown was lifted, some riders began violating the directive and were riding in parts of the city with pillion riders.

    Sustained operation

The command therefore embarked on an operation last Wednesday and Thursday with a team of policemen drawn from the Operations Unit and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Regional Command.

The objective, DCOP Adu Anim said, was to arrest motorbike riders who were defying the social distancing directive.

During the operation, he said, some commercial motorbike riders who had stationed their motorbikes at some vantage points were seen calling for passengers and they were arrested.

Some of the motorbike riders, he said, abandoned their motorcycles and bolted on seeing the police during the operation.

Mr Adu Anim said the exercise would take place in the region as all divisional and district commanders had been tasked to replicate it in their areas of responsibilities.

    Robbers

Three robbers were arrested by the Amasaman Police, while the fourth suspect was also arrested by the Anyah Police. All the arrests were made yesterday.

The suspects are Munkaila Mahmud ,19, Abbas Haruna, 22, Eric Agyei, 28, and Nasiru Mohammed, 28. An accomplice of Mohammed is currently on the run and being hunted by the police.

    Bag snatching

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said the three suspects, Mahmud, Haruna and Agyei were arrested at about 12:10a.m. on Friday April 24, 2020 at Peace Village, a suburb of Amasaman, in the Greater Accra Region.

She said the suspects were believed to have trailed their victim while she was walking home from work and attempted to snatch her handbag which contained her valuables.

The victim raised an alarm which attracted some neighbours, including police personnel who came to her rescue.

The suspects were overpowered and arrested by the police and taken to the Amasaman Police Station where they were detained.

    Police to the rescue

On the same day at about 1:20a.m, Mrs Tenge said the police in Anyaa, near Ablekuma, arrested Nasiru Mohammed for allegedly attempting to steal from some persons together with his accomplice, now at large.

She said the suspects met their victims at Nii Bortey near the Anyaa Market and demanded money from them.

The suspects, she said, conducted a search on the victims and found nothing so they asked their victims to kneel.

However, one of the victims escaped and met the police patrol team on his way and narrated the incident to them.

The patrol team proceeded to the scene and arrested Nasiru Mohammed but his accomplice escaped.

  • Security officers will return to enforce some of the new directives – Oppong Nkrumah

Minister for Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says the job of the security officers will see some changes in the coming days. There have been calls for the redeployment of security officers to ensure people put on nose mask and also practice social distancing.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah speaking at a press briefing said even though there is no lockdown currently and security officials have been withdrawn, we will see them in the coming days ensuring that the new directives will be followed duly by citizens.

“There are new directives of wearing mask, social distancing among others, in the coming days the job of the security officers will change, they will be back to help enforce some of the new directives”.

The Ghana Medical Association has called for the police and military officers to be redeployed on the streets to ensure people wear nose mask and also practice social distancing.

The GMA believes that this is the only way to ensure COVID-19 does not spread now that the President has lifted the restriction of movement of persons in Accra and Kumasi.

Even though the partial lockdown of Accra and Kumasi has been lifted, President Akufo-Addo has advised that everyone puts on a nose mask and observe social distancing.

The Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah said they had a meeting with the regional security council and have agreed to enforce the wearing of the mask, he said residents who are seen in town without the mask will be sent back home.

  • Woman who led attack on police officers granted bail

The main suspect in the assault case on three police officers stationed at the Tamale District Police Criminal and Investigative Department, Mohammed Iddrisu Sahadatu, has been granted bail to the tune of GHC 3000 with one surety to be justified.

The suspect, a resident of Changli, a suburb of Tamale, escaped arrest on Thursday April 16 after leading an attack on the police officers. But was apprehended on the following day with the support of the Assemblyman of the Area.

The case presided over by His Worship Yusif Amadu, of the Tamale District Court 2, has been adjourned to May 5, 2020.

“Mohammed Iddrisu Sahadatu was charged with two counts of assault on a public officer and resisting arrest”, the Northern Regional Police Crime Officer Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong told the media.

  • Security officers must remain on the streets to enforce wearing of masks, social distancing – Dr Owusu

Dr Michael Owusu a virologist at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research says there is a need for security officers to be in town to enforce the wearing of masks and social distancing protocol.

Even though the partial lockdown of Accra and Kumasi has been lifted, President Akufo-Addo has advised that everyone puts on a nose mask and observe social distancing.

Dr Owusu says the lifting of the lockdown will make no impact if Ghanaians abuse it and refuse to observe all the necessary measures which have been provided by the Ghana Health Service.

He believes that now is the time we need the security officers more to enforce the wearing of masks and social distancing protocol.

“We should put in surveillance in all our public transport, if someone is infected and enters a public transport and we are doing contact tracing and you don’t have a list how do you do that. The disease is in the system and is trying to get hold of it and if that happens we will have a hike in people at the hospital. The police and all security officials must ensure that all the measures be followed, if you go out without a sanitizer or nose mask you must be sent back home, I don’t think the security leaving the streets now is the best decision”.

Residents in Accra and Kumasi are free to move about currently but have been advised to be very careful and observe all measures to ensure they do not contract COVID-19.

Ever since President Akufo-Addo announced the decision to lift the lockdown, there has been mixed reactions as some believe it is a good decision which will ease the financial burden on them.

Others also think this could have a negative effect on many as it could aid the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Ghana’s case count as of April 19, 2020, was 1,042 with 9 deaths and 99 recoveries.
