  • Police chase election violence suspects

The Ghana Police Service is pursuing all suspects identified to be involved in violent activities, including the discharge of firearms during the December 7, 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The move formed part of the resolve of the police to bring finality to all election-related violence cases.

This was made known by the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Isaac Ken Yeboah, when he updated journalists on violent incidents recorded by the police during and after the elections.

The cases under investigations were the shooting of some jubilant supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Savelugu by unknown gunmen, shootings in the Ablekuma Central Constituency, rioting and shooting incident in the Odododiodio Constituency and the firing of guns at the Techiman South Constituency collation centre.

COP Yeboah said the police had commenced investigations into the cases and would work hard to ensure the prosecution of all perpetrators.

    Odododiodio

In Odododiodio, he said five suspects alleged to have shot into a crowd of jubilant supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had been arrested and put before the Adjabeng District Court in Accra.

The suspects, charged for possessing arms and ammunition without lawful authority, were remanded in police custody and would reappear in court on December 21, 2020.

Thirty-two other suspects who were arrested for damaging an NPP-branded vehicle have also been put before the same court.

They pleaded guilty and have since been granted bail by the court to reappear on February 3, 2021.

During investigations into the shooting incident which led to the death of two persons identified as Emmanuel Dompreh, 36, and Botwe Tackie,16, the police retrieved a pump action gun with cartridges and two pistols with ammunition.

Other items retrieved from the suspects included pepper sprays, a machete, jackknives, kitchen knives and a ballistic vest.

The CID head said efforts were ongoing to arrest one of the suspects identified only as Bruno, who had been on the run.

    Ablekuma Central

With regard to the shooting incident at the Ablekuma Central Constituency, the CID Director General said a national security operative, Collins Quarcoo, who fired his side arm indiscriminately at the collation centre, injuring three persons including a policeman, was arrested by the police on duty at the centre.

One of the injured persons has died.

The suspect had since been put before a Circuit Court in Accra and remanded in police custody, with the next hearing fixed for December 24, 2020.
COP Yeboah said in another incident in the same constituency, police investigations established that a stray bullet, fired by a soldier who was yet to be identified, hit two persons.

He said the incident which took place at the Odorkor Police Church which served as a collation centre for the Ablekuma Central Constituency happened when some people started pelting officials of the Electoral Commission and other persons at the centre with objects.

He explained that the stray bullet was from warning shots meant to ward off attacks from a mob.

The two victims were taken to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital but one of them, identified as Abass Ibrahim, died on December 16, 2020.

“Investigations are underway to identify the military officer who fired the warning shot,” said Mr Yeboah.

    Savelugu chief arrested

COP Yeboah said the chief of Duko in Savelugu, Duko Naa Mohammed Ahmed, and two others have been arrested in relation to the shooting of a 12-year-old girl, Zakaria Samira, and three others when some supporters of the NDC were jubilating after the elections.

He stated that police investigations had revealed that the shooting emanated from the office of the parliamentary candidate of the NDC, Alhaji Iddrris Yakubu, and that the weapon used was an AK47.

A joint military and police operation led to the retrieval of an AK 47 rifle with two magazines loaded with 40 rounds of ammunition, and a G3 ammunition with a cartridge from the chief of Duko.

When the team searched the office of Mr Yakubu in his absence, another AK 47 rifle with two magazines loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition were found.

Mr Yeboah said Mr Yakubu had failed to report to the police even though he had been invited while the chief of Duko had been put before the Tamale Magistrate Court.

The court granted the chief GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties.

    Techiman

Taking a look at Techiman, the Director General said the police were hunting for the persons behind the shooting incident which injured eight men at a collation centre in the Techiman South Constituency.

He said an unknown person from the crowd fired a gun and security persons at the centre fired warning shots to disperse rioters following a disagreement of election results during the collation of the results.

Two of the victims, identified as Tajudeen Mohammed and Abdallah Ayarek, were pronounced dead when they were taken to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman.

“The police are still investigating to determine the perpetrators of the crime,” Mr Yeboah said.

He said the Police would beef up security for the rest of the days till Monday to safeguard the sanctity of the voting materials at Adaklu Waya.

Mr Yeboah, who disclosed these to the Ghana News Agency, said an agreement was reached between the political parties on Thursday after there was disagreement as to whether to move the boxes to Ho or increase security at Waya.

He said instead of moving the ballots to Ho for safe-keeping, the decision was to rather beef up security at the current location to avoid raising any suspicions.

He said, “we do not have any ulterior motive, whether the ballot boxes remain at Waya or move to Ho armoury. Our main function is to protect the sanctity of the ballot till Monday, we believe that’s our mandate.”

The decision followed escalating tension and suspicion between the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Adaklu Constituency over how the ballot should be kept safe and protected.

Mr Yeboah said the development had resulted in some youth congregating at the Waya Police post to prevent the relocation of the ballot boxes.

  • IGP commissions elevated Effutu Police Station

The Winneba District Police Command has been elevated to Divisional Command status and with a call on the personnel to display utmost professionalism, accountability, commitment and to respect the civil populace they serve.

Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) who made the call at a ceremony at Winneba to officially commission a Police Station each at Essuekyir and Ntakofam, also inspected three other police station projects under construction.

The IGP stated that two additional Police District Commands were created to serve the University Education Winneba (UEW) Communities and the northern part of Effutu Municipality.

“Effective policing, crime prevention and control, thrive on shared responsibility between the police and the public”, the IGP said.

He stated that it was imperative for the police to consistently demonstrate impartiality, fairness, respect the civil liberties and human rights of the people and also to avoid all forms of corrupt practices to eliminate bad perception and incessant media backlash in order to build public confidence in them.

The IGP zipping-Buanuh applauded the Effutu Municipal Assembly and the Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for the area, for their relentless commitment and efforts, which saw the early completion of the two edifices.

He said the projects will support the police service to execute its mandate and also address the security concerns of the ever-increasing population and expansion of socio-economic activities in the area.

He said the current societal dynamics, the political landscape, social-economic activities, evolution of complex crimes, ever-increasing population and the advancement of information and communication technology demanded the realigning of police operations.

According to him, recent studies conducted revealed that Effutuman was among the fastest growing communities in Ghana with a number of hospitals, second cycle and tertiary institutions, wide stretch of beach resorts and the Police Command and Staff College and the unique “Aboakyer and Masquerade festivities”.

It was therefore obvious that security facilities needed to be expanded to prioritize security services to boost the economic development of the area. The Police, he noted, had put comprehensive and concrete security measures in place to ensure that there was peace before, during and after the electioneering process, he added.

He appealed to people of Effutu to see themselves as one people, bury their personal differences and not allow partisan politics to divide them, saying the election was not war, but a time to contribute their quota for peaceful coexistence.

Later, Mr Afenyo-Markin presented a set of musical instruments to the Central Regional Police Band stationed in Winneba, five motorbikes, and three Pick-ups to the Winneba police command.

Mr Thomas Adjei, Baffoe, Deputy Central Regional Minister, Mr John B. Ninson Effutu Municipal Chief Executive and Neenyi Ghartey VII, Paramount Chief of Effutu Traditional Area were among personalities at the event.

  • Show Ghanaians how you dealt with troublemakers in previous elections – Bona to police

One way the Ghana Police Service can assure Ghanaians of their safety and security during the 2020 elections is by informing the public how it dealt with persons who were arrested for causing trouble in previous elections, Adam Bona, a security analyst has said.

According to him, the police will earn the trust and confidence of Ghanaians if they educate the public and render account on how they dealt with previous cases.

“The police should let us know how they previously handled persons who tried to foment trouble during elections. That will be reassuring for us. For instance, recently we saw some young people on social media threatening to cause mayhem during the 2020 elections. We want to hear from the police what exactly they have done or are going to do about it,” he told Citi News.

His comment follows assurances by the Inspector General of Police James Oppong Boanuh that the police will deal with any individual or group that seeks to foment trouble in the December elections.

The IGP said that the police will protect voters and all Ghanaians before, during and after the elections.

“Security will be tightened in order to curb crime before, during, and after the polls,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police and security agencies have identified 6,178 flashpoints ahead of the 2020 general elections.

The IGP who made the announcement at a press briefing on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, said that a total of 62,794 security personnel will be deployed.

The IGP also appealed to politicians, religious leaders, and traditional rulers to advised their followers to follow the laid down procedures.

“Experience shows that such movements generate confusion and cause disturbances,” he said.

“The opportunity is already given for their observation through the agents they put at polling stations and coalition centers. Violence does not pay. Electoral related violence will only lead to human suffering and undermine the very country candidates want to lead,” he added.

They reportedly belonged to the camps of the incumbent Odododiodio MP, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye and the NPP Parliamentary candidate Nii Lante Bannerman.

Speaking on Wednesday’s edition of ”Kokrokoo” on Peace FM, Kweku Baako called on the Police to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators irrespective of their political party affiliations.

According to him, the culture where members and supporters belonging to political parties, with specific mention of the NPP and NDC, stir riot and go scot free must end with immediate effect.

Using the Odododiodio violence as a case study, the seasoned journalist said, ”whether they’re NPP or NDC, charge them. Take them to the law court. Let them face trial and if the evidence is sustained, jail them according to law . . . The arrest, the charging, the prosecution, the conviction and sentence; we need some of those things going forward as a way of helping each other”.

“I feel we’re weak at the enforcement of the electoral laws and even the national laws. It’s part of the issue that is sowing the seeds for impunity. We have to close our eyes sometimes to the party colors of the perpetrators but arrest them, send them to court, try them and sentence them,” he asserted.
