GIS officer shot dead by armed assailants at Gbintri

An armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region has reportedly left an Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), Rafiq Mohammed, dead and another officer, AICOII  Oppong Daniel, also injured.

While details of the attack remain unclear, reports suggest the incident took place at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3. However, AK-47 shell casings used by the attackers during the operation have been retrieved by the joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS.

Meanwhile, AICOII Oppong Daniel is receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the incident.

In July this year, the lifeless body of an immigration officer identified as Stephen King Amoah, also known as Nana Kofi, was discovered in a drainage system near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, Accra.

The deceased is said to have gone missing five days (since July 3) before his tragic death. This was contained in a press statement by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, July 10.

Providing more details about the tragic incident, the police noted that the murderer(s) of the 38-year-old also set his body on fire.

The deceased’s remains have been conveyed to the Police Hospital morgue after the relatives positively identified the body as Stephen.

The police have disclosed that their preliminary investigations indicate the deceased had gone to meet his debtor, one Bright Aweh, who had promised to pay the outstanding debt owed on Thursday, July 3, in the evening.

The victim never returned home that night, and his phone remained switched off throughout, raising concerns among family and friends who later reported him missing.

“Investigations revealed that on 3rd July 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., the deceased left his residence at Ashongman Estate after receiving WhatsApp images of cash bundles from one Bright Aweh, who requested to meet him at a spot at Ashongman Estate to settle an outstanding amount.

“According to the complainant, the deceased never returned home that night, and his phone remained switched off thereafter,” the police said.

After the deceased’s family filed a complaint at the police station, Bright Aweh was arrested to assist with the investigation.

He admitted that he met with the deceased and alleged that he gave a cash of GHS500,000 to the deceased, instructing him “to use part of the money to pay off some debts and hold the remaining amount for later collection.”

But the police in their statement noted that “the suspect could not clearly explain the source of the funds and gave conflicting statements.”

Meanwhile, the police pledged to get to the bottom of the case and ensure justice is served to the perpetrators.

“The Regional Police Command strongly condemns such violent and criminal acts and assures the public that it is working diligently to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this incident and bring all responsible persons to justice,” it added.

Subsequently, the Ghana Police announced the arrest of the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of immigration officer Stephen King Amoah, also known as Nana Kofi on August 4.

This follows the discovery of weapons believed to have been used in the murder of Immigration Officer Stephen Amoah.

During a press briefing on Monday, August 4, the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, revealed that bloodstains were found in the living room, on a burnt, blood-soaked carpet, and on a fufu pestle suspected to have been used in the murder by the suspect.

According to the Police, the forensic conducted on Thursday, July 24, also exposed freshly sprayed walls, hinting at an attempted cleanup by the suspect.

“The Kwabenya Teshie Police visited the suspect’s residence, and the forensic inspection revealed the following bloodstains in the living room and evidence of attempted cleanup, freshly sprayed walls, and an empty can of spray paint. A search of a secondary crime scene near the GBC satellite area also uncovered a burnt woolen carpet and partially burnt camouflage fabric.”

“These items were photographed, retrieved and photocopied for forensic analysis. On 24th July, the police received a warrant to search a particular room in the suspect’s house. A search in the room revealed more bloodstains, which were photographed and samples collected for forensic analysis. A further search in the bushes about 100 metres from the suspect’s house also led to the retrieval of the…” the Police said.

The Service has noted that in the coming days, undertake a DNA exercise on the bloodstains with samples from the deceased mother and son, aiding with the process.

“I wish to say that the initial blood sample collected was positive for human blood. To aid the investigations, the deceased mother and son has provided sample for DNA profiling. In the face of these pieces of evidence the suspect who was initially charged with kidnapping has since been rearrested and formally charged with murder. He is currently on remand following his appearance with the Adabraka District Court and is scheduled to reappear on 8th August 2025.

“A special operation is currently underway to identify and arrest his accomplices and we are following other vital leads to gather all necessary evidence against the suspect and his accomplices. The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that the investigations is ongoing and every effort is being made to ensure that all the perpetrators are prosecuted,” she added.

Meanwhile, recent reports suggested that the third suspect involved in the murder of Stephen King Amoah, an Immigration Officer, has succumbed to an illness.

According to sources, the victim’s brother, Kwasi Amoako, revealed this information to the media.

“Yesterday we went to court and I can confirm that the third suspect has passed on. I was told by the Police CID, the one who is in charge of the case. We thank God that our brother has started seeking justice for himself,” he is quoted to have said by MyJoyOnline.

The police are yet to issue a formal statement on the suspect’s death.

The Adabraka District Court on August 22, continued hearing the case after remanding the prime suspect into police custody for two weeks.

The court has adjourned the case involving the murder of immigration officer, Stephen King Amoah, to October 9 following the police’s request for more time to gather the due evidence against the accused parties.

The adjournment of the case was announced during the court hearing at the Adabraka District Court on Thursday, September 4, where the prosecutors prayed the court that the Ghana Police Service needed more time and specialised gadgets to advance investigations.

According to them, a court order had been secured to facilitate the process and prayed that the suspects, Bright Aweh and Thomas Ziggah, remain in custody.

However, Counsel for the suspects, Gordon Aboagye, expressed concerns about the state of his clients, who appeared visibly distressed, suggesting that they may have been held under harsh conditions while in custody.

Referring to the need to uphold democratic principles, he prayed that the court reveal the detention location of the suspects in order for their families to visit them and check their well-being while in custody.

“In line with democratic principles, families of the suspects should be aware of their location to enable visitation”

“My Lord, my client has appeared in court limping and with bloodshot eyes. He has already been treated twice at the Police Hospital without improvement. We respectfully request that he be sent to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for independent medical attention,” he argued.

However, the prosecution objected, urging the defence to formally apply if it insists on the transfer of its client.

He further appealed to the bereaved family to remain calm and allow the law to take its course. He commiserated with them for their loss.

“We sympathise with the family of the deceased and plead with them to remain calm and allow the law to take its course,” he added.

The court, on the other hand, admonished the family of the bereaved family to stay patient, assuring them that justice would be duly served.

Meanwhile, a dramatic scene unfolded at the court when the aunt of the late officer performed rituals, breaking eggs and invoking curses on those she believes are responsible for his death.

She reportedly said, “Anyone responsible for his death should also suffer the same fate. All your generation will suffer the same fate; the gods should deal ruthlessly with anyone responsible for his murder. The gods shouldn’t spare anyone involved.”

The case is now scheduled to continue on October 9.

Breakdown of foreign nationals detained, repatriated for street begging

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has provided a breakdown of foreign nationals detained and repatriated for street begging in the country.

A statement from the GIS issued on Monday, May 19, revealed that 925 undocumented migrants have been repatriated from the country.

The nationalities are currently being held at the designated holding center, including 2,241 individuals.

They consist of 2,073 Nigeriens, 138 Nigerians, 28 Burkinabes, 1 Guinean, and 1 Malian.

A total of 925 have been repatriated. A breakdown of the repatriated foreigners indicates 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians.

All affected immigrants had to undergo profiling and security screening in line with standard operating procedures.

Repatriation could not commence on Friday, 16th May, because the above processes continued into the late hours of the day.

Repatriation was initiated in the morning of Saturday, 17th May. According to the GIS, processes are underway to repatriate the foreign nationals.

On Friday, May 16, the GIS removed street children and their guardians from the streets of the country’s capital, Accra, particularly at Kaneshie and Abossey Okai.

The initiative was aimed at decongesting the streets as well as curbing child exploitation as part of the Mahama-led administration’s agenda to improve urban mobility.

The victims, who usually solicit for alms and are believed to be foreign nationals, were packed in immigration vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has revealed that the exercise to rid the streets of foreign nationals will soon be extended to other regions beyond Accra.

“I have seen the public reactions and calls for similar actions in places like Kumasi, Tamale, and other communities. Please be assured that this is a nationwide exercise that began in Accra and will be extended to other regions soon.”

The minister has urged all Ghanaians to remain calm and support this exercise.

“Let us cooperate with the security teams as they work to protect our streets and uphold national safety,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

  • GIS launches $94.6m ‘Immigration 360’ to modernize border management

GIS launches $94.6m ‘Immigration 360’ to modernize border management

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has announced the rollout of a new system called “Immigration 360,” designed to fully automate how passengers are processed and data is managed at the country’s 48 approved entry and exit points. This system will also cover other operational commands.

The project, which costs $94.6 million, aims to address challenges like sovereignty, interoperability, and other limitations tied to the current setup in use at 12 approved borders.

As part of the first phase, the GIS is installing advanced border management systems at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra. These include an e-Gate feature, costing $5.5 million, which is expected to simplify and speed up passenger processing. The e-Gate system itself, consisting of 15 units and accessories, is valued at $1.7 million.

Deputy Commissioner of Immigration for Special Duties/Public Affairs, Maud Anima Quianoo, addressed claims circulating on social media that the e-Gates at KIA cost $240 million. She clarified that this figure refers to the total life-cycle cost of the entire project, while the initial implementation cost is $94.6 million.

“The $240 million includes two periodic wholesale upgrades of the critical components of the system and the cost of maintenance and licenses over the 10-year cycle of the project. The first upgrade type is in three replacement cycles of key components of the system.

The second upgrade type is two (2) 5-year upgrade cycles within ten (10) years to replace major components of the technical infrastructure. This is to ensure a refresh of the system at all times and to ensure the hand back of a brand-new system at the end of the ten-year period,” the GIS press statement said.

It added that after accounting for Value Added Tax (VAT) and other taxes, the total came to $274 million, which includes maintenance and hands-on support services over a 10-year period to guarantee the system is operational around the clock.

“It is worth noting that Immigration 360 provides the benefits of integrating seamlessly with local databases, which include Ghana’s National Identification System (NIS), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), National Stop/Watch List, and international systems.

The new system will work with tools like Interpol, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD), Advanced Passenger Information (API), Passenger Name Record (PNR), and PISCES. These tools help make travel, trade, and security smoother.

The GIS also mentioned that the system, developed by Margins ID Systems Application Ltd, a Ghanaian company, can link up with the visas and permits issued by the GIS to improve border control processes nationwide.

“It is important to note that Margins ID Systems Application Ltd (MIDSA) is pre-financing the implementation cost of $94,664,374.57 and will be repaid from revenue that will accrue from the use of the system.”

  • More than 12,000 Ghanaians were deported globally in last four years – GIS

More than 12,000 Ghanaians were deported globally in last four years – GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has reported that over the past four years, a total of 12,646 Ghanaians, comprising 8,186 men and 4,459 women have been deported from various countries.

Most of these deportations occurred from countries such as Libya, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, and Canada.

This update was shared by Assistant Commissioner at the Migration Information Centre for Returnees at Kotoka International Airport, Madam Yaa Oppong Opoku-Agyeman, during a ceremony in Accra marking International Migrants Day.

The event, organized by the SEWA Foundation in collaboration with the Ghana Airports Company Limited and other partners, was themed “Safe Migration: Building Bridges, Not Barriers.”

Madam Opoku-Agyeman highlighted that 2022 saw the highest number of deportations, with 3,028 Ghanaians returned, including 1,813 men and 1,215 women.

According to her, in 2021, 2,881 Ghanaians were deported, and in 2020, the figure stood at 1,143.

She added that in 2023, a total of 2,750 deportations were recorded, with 1,889 men and 861 women. As of November 2024, the total stands at 2,843, with 2,269 men and 574 women.

“In 2023, we had 1889 males and 861 females and a total of 2750. And in 2024 up to November, we had 2,269 males and 574 females, making a total of 2,843,” she added.

She emphasized that while migration can significantly benefit Ghana through remittances, knowledge exchange, and personal development, irregular migration often leads to grave consequences.

These include the risk of deportation, exploitation, forced labor, human trafficking, and even loss of life.

“On the contrary, when migration is irregular in the form of stowaway, travelling through the desert, human trafficking, improper documentation, and irregular or overstayed, it could lead to the following, deportation or repatriation, loss of life, sexual exploitation, loss of vital body organs, depression, forced labour, detention, among others,” she added.

Assistant Commissioner at the Migration Information Centre for Returnees at Kotoka International Airport noted that the GIS is committed to assisting Ghanaians in traveling through the proper channels to safeguard their well-being.

Secretary of the SEWA Foundation, Mrs. Selma Enyonam Tsatey, suggested that Ghana could learn from global best practices to create a more structured approach to labor export.

She noted that by establishing proper training and recruitment programs, Ghana could create legitimate migration pathways for its youth.

She also proposed reviewing visa policies and improving the support systems of Ghanaian embassies to ensure the public receives accurate and helpful information.

“By designing and implementing robust training and recruitment programmes, Ghana can create legitimate pathways for our young people,” she said.

A migrant, Bright Opoku Appiah, who recently returned to Ghana, called on the government to cultivate an environment that encourages responsible migration, ensuring that Ghanaians abroad contribute positively to the country’s economic development.

We eagerly await outcome of IGP’s investigations of GIS land ‘state capture’ – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed anticipation for the outcome of the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) investigation into the alleged ‘state capture’ of Ghana International School (GIS) land.

Ablakwa’s comments come amid remarks made by the Office of the President about claims that “Management and security personnel of Ghana International School have been compelled to use its school buses as a blockade to prevent an illegal takeover of their land in Cantonments following last Saturday’s foiled 2am invasion.”

The Office of the President says it has formally requested the IGP to investigate the entire matter, urging the public to “disregard as false any statements to the contrary.”

Mr Ablakwa, whose earlier remarks prompted a response from the Office of the President alleged that GIS is “hurriedly erecting a fence wall, hopefully as a more permanent solution,” and questioned, “How did Ghana get here? State Capture must and will be defeated!”

On the matter, the Office of the President has clarified that Chief Superintendent Ibrahim Opoku of its VVIP unit “only chanced upon the 2am GIS attempted illegal land grab on his way from work.”

The Office has insisted that “the Office of the President does NOT have any interest whatsoever in the piece of land in question” and that “no officer, agent or assign has been directed to secure and/or interfere in any matter pertaining to GIS land within Cantonments.”

Furthermore, the Office explained that Chief Superintendent Opoku “did his professional duty by handing over alleged encroachers and suspects to the Cantonments Police Station” and “submitted his credentials at the police station, as he is enjoined to do, as part of standard operating procedure in such situations.”

GIS fighting ‘state capture’ by using school bus as blockade on its premises – Ablakwa claims

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised serious concerns about the alleged involvement of the Office of the President in a land dispute involving Ghana International School (GIS) in Cantonments.

In a recent post on X, Mr Ablakwa revealed that “Management and security personnel of Ghana International School have been compelled to use its school buses as a blockade to prevent an illegal takeover of their land in Cantonments following last Saturday’s foiled 2am invasion.”

He further noted that GIS is “hurriedly erecting a fence wall, hopefully as a more permanent solution,” and questioned, “How did Ghana get here? State Capture must and will be defeated!”

In response to these allegations, the Office of the President has issued a statement addressing the matter. The Office refutes any involvement in the land dispute, stating that “the Office of the President does NOT have any interest whatsoever in the piece of land in question.”

The statement clarifies that “no officer, agent or assign has been directed to secure and/or interfere in any matter pertaining to GIS land within Cantonments.”

Additionally, the Office has explained that “the said Chief Superintendent Ibrahim Opoku of the VIP unit of the OOP did his professional duty by handing over alleged encroachers and suspects to the Cantonments Police Station when he chanced upon an altercation at the Cantonments barrier on his way from work.”

It also notes that “the Chief Superintendent submitted his credentials at the police station, as he is enjoined to do, as part of standard operating procedure in such situations.”

In light of these developments, the Office of the President has lodged a formal complaint with the Inspector General of Police, requesting an investigation into the entire matter.

The Office urges the public to “disregard as false any statements to the contrary.”

  • GIS, NACOC receive safety items worth £9k from British High Commission

GIS, NACOC receive safety items worth £9k from British High Commission

The UK’s Department of Home Office International Operations (HOIO) has donated a range of search and safety equipment to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) personnel stationed at the Paga Border.

Valued at £9,000, the donation includes: boxes of handcuffs, handcuff holders, gloves, utility belts, Maglite torches, Stanley torches, pocket balances, ladders, container probes, a large Defender weighing scale, Peugeot Gerber cutter, Peugeot drill machine, Bosch inspection cameras, and digital cameras.

These items are anticipated to greatly enhance the detection of prohibited and restricted goods at the border. They will enable GIS and NACOC staff to effectively inspect containers, packages, and suitcases, thereby boosting operational efficiency.

The equipment is built to be durable with a long lifespan, requiring only occasional battery replacements.

Femi Akerele, International Liaison Manager of Home Office International Operations, remarked:

“By working collaboratively, we can bring our expertise and assistance together to tackle organized crimes. Fighting human trafficking and modern slavery, trafficking of illicit commodities including drugs, firearms, illicit cash, and their negative impacts on our countries are our shared priorities. We believe this donation will assist in fulfilling that mandate. HOIO looks forward to continuing to work with GIS and NACOC to address these crucial risks.”

The donation occurred during a visit by the Northern Ghana team of the British High Commission to the Upper East Region. Led by Senior Counsellor and Northern Ghana Attaché Paul Edwards, the team also met with the new Upper East Regional Minister and discussed security, development, and politics.

The visit was an opportunity to strengthen relations with key stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and political parties, who will play a significant role in the 2024 elections in the region.

After the visit, Northern Ghana Attaché Paul Edwards commented:

“I am pleased that my colleagues from the Department of Home Office International Operations and our election expert joined me and the Northern Ghana team on this visit to the Upper East, Northeast, and Northern regions. I know the equipment provided to the Ghana Immigration Service and NACOC was well received. I also recognize the importance of our staff experiencing the Northern regions firsthand. Ghana cannot reach its potential unless Northern Ghana does. Security, economic growth, and development are interconnected and should be considered as different facets of the same triangle. It’s only by engaging directly with people on the ground that you can gain a true understanding of the opportunities and risks in the north.”

The HOIO collaborates with Ghanaian partners, including the Ghana Immigration Service and Narcotics Control Commission, to combat organized immigration crime, human trafficking, modern slavery, and the trafficking of illicit goods such as drugs, firearms, and illicit cash.

This collaboration involves providing training, logistics, office facilities, equipment, and IT support to ensure effective performance. Over the past year, the partnership has successfully disrupted numerous organized crime groups and seized significant amounts of illicit commodities.

Denmark govt donates IT and cyber security equipment to GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has received a significant boost with a generous donation of state-of-the-art information technology and cyber security equipment from the government of Denmark.

The donation, aimed at enhancing the GIS’s capacity to combat irregular migration, includes a wide range of high-tech equipment such as cyber security software, IT infrastructure for LAN/WAN setup, laptops, desktops, CCTV cameras, CCTV monitors, digital cameras, industrial copiers, and IP phones.

The Danish government, through this donation, aims to improve the institutional and operational capabilities of the GIS, particularly in the areas of document fraud detection, strategic planning, and intra-agency coordination.

This support is part of Denmark’s ongoing collaboration with Ghana, which has been in place since 2018, funded through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

One notable project under this collaboration is the Strengthening Border and Migration Management in Ghana (SMMIG II). Amala Obiokoye-Nwalo, the head of the office for ICMPD, highlighted the successes of the first phase of the project, SMMIG I, which included the revamping of the Document Fraud office in Kumasi last year.

This renovation, completed on August 24, 2023, involved a comprehensive overhaul of the facility, including the procurement of office furniture and specialized forensic document verification equipment, significantly enhancing GIS’s ability to combat document fraud.

“Document security is the bedrock of identity management and an important factor in migration governance and security,” Obiokoye-Nwalo noted.

The Comptroller General of GIS, Kwame Asuah Takyi, emphasized the importance of migration governance as a key accelerator of sustainable development.

He called on all stakeholders to support the government’s efforts in reducing irregular migration, highlighting the necessity of collaboration and building lasting relationships to effect meaningful change in migration management.

“Collaboration and building lasting relationships are important for us to effect the change that we envisage in this space,” Takyi stated. “I call on all stakeholders to come on board to help in strengthening the government’s efforts in reducing irregular migration so that both countries of destination and origin will enjoy the benefits of a well-managed migration.”

On behalf of Denmark, Deputy Ambassador to Ghana, Vibeke Sandholm Pedersen, urged the GIS management to ensure that the donated equipment is properly deployed, utilized, and maintained for the benefit of the country.

Representing the government, Deputy Interior Minister Naana Eyiah Quansah expressed gratitude to Denmark and the ICMPD for their continuous support.

“On behalf of the government of Ghana, we convey our gratitude to the Danish Government for their support to the Ghana Immigration Service over the years, and also appreciate the International Centre for Migration Policy Development for facilitating the implementation of the various activities under the Project,” she said.

2 including Chinese arrested at Paga Border for unlawful possession of arms, gold, cash

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully intercepted a shipment of arms at the Paga Border Post, resulting in the arrest of a Chinese national and his Ghanaian accomplice.

The two were in a Burkina Faso registered Toyota Rav4 car numbered 0919G203. On reaching the Ghana side of the border, they attempted to evade Immigration control by speeding off.

Inspector Ebenezer Badu and AICO Charles Taali who were on duty gave them a hot chase which led to the interception and arrest of Mr Zhou Quan, the Chinese; and Mr Awato Kwame, his Ghanaian accomplice.

A search conducted on the vehicle revealed two Chinese pump action guns (Golden Eagle), eleven packs of body amour bags, two jack knives, fifteen electronic gold scales, three phones, one pack of suspected gold ore, GHC147,160.00, CFA51,000.00 and USD330.00.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on July 15, the GIS praised the vigilance and dedication of its officers at the Paga Border Post. Their attentiveness was pivotal in ensuring the successful interception and the subsequent arrests.

“The vigilance of our Immigration Officers at the Paga Border Post has led to the interception and arrest of a Chinese national and his Ghanaian accomplice,” the GIS stated in the post.

The GIS reiterated its commitment to constant surveillance and proactive measures to maintain national security.

The Service emphasized that such efforts are critical in preventing the influx of illegal arms and ensuring the safety and security of the country.

GPHA sanctions security personnel caught in a scuffle with Immigration officers at Tema Port

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has expressed disapproval of the scuffle that occurred at the Tema port.

The altercation took place between the Authority’s security personnel and officers from the Ghana Immigration Service on Monday, May 13.

In a press release, the GPHA confirmed the incident but acknowledged that “it could have been handled more effectively to prevent escalation.”

This resistance to being searched, according to the GPHA, contravenes the Standard Operating Procedures established by the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISPS).

The Authority has taken full responsibility for the actions of its security personnel involved and stated that the individual has “since been reprimanded.”

The clash broke out when GPHA security members stationed at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) allegedly entered the GIS office at MPS intending to apprehend two officers following a disagreement during routine vessel checks on the MSC DYMPHNA at the Tema Port.

The dispute arose when GPHA security personnel insisted on searching the immigration officers after they had completed their inspection duties at the Tema Port.

However, a GIS inspector objected, asserting that while searches of their bags were permissible, body searches of the officers, especially by male security personnel, were not allowed.

VIDEO: Heated confrontation between Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority security and GIS personnel

A video capturing a heated confrontation between Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority security personnel and Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officers at an Immigration office has surfaced on social media.

Reports indicate that a group of approximately 12 security personnel from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), stationed at Meridian Port Services (MPS), allegedly forcibly entered the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) office at MPS.

This incident reportedly occurred following a disagreement during standard vessel checks on the MSC DYMPHNA.

Allegedly, the GPHA security insisted on searching the GIS officers after they had completed their inspection duties.

However, one GIS Inspector objected, stating that while they could search their bags, the individual officers could not be searched by males.

This refusal reportedly led to verbal altercations and physical harassment between the two groups. Subsequently, more GPHA security officers arrived at the scene to apprehend the GIS officers involved in the disagreement.

The situation escalated into a chaotic confrontation between the GPHA security officers and the GIS officers, resulting in the tearing of the uniform of a GIS officer identified as AICO II Boadu.

The video, which has since gone viral, has raised questions about the relationship between the two agencies and the need for better communication and conflict resolution mechanisms.

Authorities from both the Ghana Ports and Harbour Security and Ghana Immigration are yet to comment on the incident. However, the video has sparked discussions among Ghanaians about the need for professionalism and cooperation among security agencies to maintain peace and security in the country.

GIS confiscates cocoa beans being smuggled to Togo at Kpando Torkor

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted three trucks suspected of smuggling cocoa beans at Kpando Torkor in the Volta Region.

The vehicles, registered as GE 1782-U, AS 7907-22, and GT 5932-12, were intercepted at dawn on Friday, April 12.

Head of Public Affairs at GIS, Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, stated that the Officer-in-Charge of the GIS in the Kpando Municipal Command, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Peter Austin Hall, and a team of officers were deployed based on intelligence to Kpando Torkor.

They observed a boat suspected to be from the Afram Plains unloading bags of cocoa beans into the trucks, parked near the landing site, apparently for smuggling through an unapproved route at Wli to Togo.

The suspects, Wahab Abdulai, Nicholas Agbesi, and Fodume, all aged 42, were arrested, and the trucks were handed over to the Kpando Police for further action.

Superintendent Amoako-Atta emphasized GIS’s commitment to border protection and prevention of cross-border crimes.

He commended border residents and the public for their continuous collaboration through information-sharing and urged citizens to report suspicious persons and activities to GIS and other security agencies as part of the “See Something, Say Something” campaign.

GIS arrests ‘fugitive’ Ivorian taxi driver who reportedly killed his girlfriend

Elubo Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has apprehended a 32-year-old Ivorian taxi driver suspected of fleeing to Ghana to evade prosecution for the alleged murder of his girlfriend in Côte d’Ivoire.

The fugitive, identified as Nduoba Essoi Fulgence, was captured on April 2, 2024, at Edwakpole, a village near Anyinase in the Ellembele District of the Western Region.

Reports indicate that Fulgence is accused of brutally slashing the throat of his girlfriend, known as Nda Abekan Anne or Ella, before escaping to Ghana.

The Western Regional Public Affairs Officer of the GIS, Inspector Moses Manford Akakpo, announced that the arrest was made based on information received from authorities on the Ivorian side of the Elubo Border and the Ivorian Police Commissaire.

Initial investigations suggested that Fulgence might seek refuge with relatives in the Edwakpole village, approximately 50 kilometers from Elubo.

A surveillance team comprising Immigration Officers from the Elubo Sector Command, led by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Joshua Krakue, was deployed to track down the suspect.

“After about two hours of intensive operation, the suspect was identified and arrested in a house believed to be his family house at Edwakpole village,” the statement disclosed.

On Tuesday, around 4 p.m., the GIS handed over Fulgence to the Ivorian Police Commissaire in Noe at the Elubo Border to facilitate further legal proceedings.

The GIS expressed appreciation to all parties involved in the collaborative effort to apprehend the suspect.

GIS officers caught assisting visitors at KIA to be suspended

Interior Minister-designate, Henry Quartey, has issued a stern warning to immigration officials at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), stating that any staff caught assisting visitors will be immediately suspended from duty.

The warning was delivered during Quartey’s recent visit to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) headquarters in Accra.

He emphasized the gravity of such misconduct, labeling it as unprofessional, and urged officers to abstain from such actions.

“Men and women wear uniforms only to go and see off their friends at the Airport. They pull their bags right from the car, and walk through checking, walk them through immigration and even security points all the way.

“When you disembark you see them lined up waiting for their friends, they take their bags. I have told the CG to send a message to them that it has to stop with immediate effect, and I mean immediate effect.”

“We will send plain clothes to go there, if an immigration officer is found around the arrival hall, or departure hall, engaging passengers please consider that you will be at home for a long time and that will be coming from me, not the CG. So, tell them,” he stated.

Furthermore, Mr. Quartey urged GIS officers to maintain professionalism, especially with the upcoming 2024 general elections in mind.

He emphasized the crucial role of the GIS in ensuring impartiality and conducting free and fair elections.

“We are seriously relying on you and please don’t misquote me; we are relying on you to perform your professional duty as GIS before, during and after the elections.

“We must ensure free, fair and transparent elections. That is why I am saying if you want to do politics let us know so we can make an application for you to join a political party. So please all of you mind your uniform and work for Ghana our motherland,” the Interior Minister stated.

  • ‘Repatriated’ Shalimar Abbiusi obtained her student permit by fraudulent misrepresentation – GIS

‘Repatriated’ Shalimar Abbiusi obtained her student permit by fraudulent misrepresentation – GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has provided an explanation for the arrest and subsequent repatriation of Ms. Shalimar Abbuisi, a Belgian national and spokesperson for The New Force, a new political group in Ghana.

According to GIS, the Comptroller-General revoked Ms. Abbuisi’s residence permit in accordance with Section 20 (2)(a) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

The GIS in a press statement noted that she had obtained her student permit by “fraudulent misrepresentation”, and that “Per the law, Ms Shalimar Abbiusi could not remain in Ghana, and the Comptroller-General ordered her removal from the country.”

The New Force spokesperson was repatriated on December 19, 2023 aboard Air Brussels Flt. No. SN 319 back to her home country.”

This followed her re-arrest on December 19, after the Ghana Immigration Service revoked her permit.

The Kaneshie District Court discharged the Belgian national on Tuesday as state prosecutors decided to drop the charge related to obtaining a student permit under false declaration.

Shalimar, as per the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), had stated in her documents that she was a student of the Ghana Christian University College. However, upon investigation, this claim was found to be false.

Despite being relieved when the charges were dropped, Shalimar’s freedom was short-lived as she was re-arrested. The state had made travel arrangements, giving her 24 hours to leave the country.

In response, lead counsel for Shalimar Abbiusi, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has described as disgraceful the manner in which his client was forced to leave the country following a legal case.

Mr Francis-Xavier Sosu, while engaging the media said this act contravenes her fundamental human rights, as she should have been allowed to choose her destination since she was not deported.

“I picked information that sometime last night, she was being escorted to board the Brussels Airline to Belgium. But clearly, this is so shameful and disgraceful.

“Because she was not deported from Ghana and there was no deportation order by the Minister but an Executive Instrument. So holding her and even denying her access to her lawyers and even her Family and escorting her with men in uniform was a violation. When you revoked the person’s visa and said that leave our jurisdiction within 24 hours, she could move from Ghana to Togo. She has the Liberty to move anywhere else that she can go,” he said.

New Force spokesperson’s lawyers demand alleged forged documents from GIS

The lead counsel for the embattled spokesperson of The New Force Movement, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has stated that the legal team is prepared to file a new application demanding the Ghana Immigration Service to produce the documents his client is accused of forging.

The lawyer revealed that they have already requested a copy of the purported forged document from the Immigration Service.

In an interview with Citi News, Francis-Xavier Sosu affirmed that if their attempts to obtain the alleged forged documents through official channels are unsuccessful, the defense team will not hesitate to file a new application to address the matter.

Ms. Shalimar Abbiusi, a Belgian national associated with the Movement, was detained by the National Investigation Bureau during its inquiry into the Movement’s formation.

Ms. Abbiusi was subsequently brought before the Kaneshie District Court, where she was granted bail amounting to GH¢20,000 and required to report to the police three times a week.

“It is important that the Immigration Service will disclose these documents to enable us to advise our client because as far as we are concerned, the documents that are alleged to have been forged were not documents that were forged by our client. So we really want to know those documents, and we have even requested for the officers who actually did those visas and so on and so forth.”

“That will help us properly interrogate the issue because, as far as we are concerned, she was never in charge of the process that led to the procurement of her document, which then led to the procurement of her visa. We are hopeful that they will provide us with those documents by the close of the day on Monday. If we don’t have them, we will be forced to file a new application for an order for them to produce those documents before we go into the merits of the matter.”

31 alleged sex workers, human traffickers arrested by GIS in Western Region

The Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), working in conjunction with its Axim Sector Command, has apprehended 31 individuals on suspicion of being involved in prostitution and human trafficking in the vicinity of a notorious brothel named Bafana Bafana Resort, situated in the Ellembelle District and Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

According to the GIS statement, this two-day intelligence-driven operation commenced with a raid on the aforementioned brothel and nearby drinking establishments and makeshift structures within the Essiama area, leading to the detention of individuals aged between 22 and 37 years.

The operation, which spanned several hours, resulted in the apprehension of 17 individuals, including the proprietor and manager of the establishment, a 62-year-old man named Mr. Kofi Bekoe.

Furthermore, 12 more individuals, along with two suspected accomplices involved in human trafficking, were taken into custody during subsequent mop-up operations conducted on Saturday evening and in the early hours of Sunday.

“In all, the over thirty hours (30hrs) of sustained operation saw to the arrest of twenty-eight (28) suspected prostitutes, including two (2) nursing mothers.

“The other suspects were the two (2) suspected Traffickers, Mr Ndubueze Okereke, 37yrs and his wife, Ifeoma Okereke, 35yrs, all Nigerians with the exception of Mr Kofo Bekoe, who is a Ghanaian and the host of a suspected Trafficking syndicate.”

“This particular operation was planned and successfully carried out with the support from the authorities of the above-mentioned assemblies, owing to the growing concerns of the nefarious activities, especially by some of the foreign nationals within the said communities, and the impunity with which the brothel operated,” the GIS stated.

According to the statement, investigations revealed that all the suspects had entered the country without the requisite passports or any other travel identification documents. Additionally, searches conducted on their persons and the premises uncovered packets of both used and unused condoms, particularly within the rooms.

Furthermore, the GIS noted that in a related development, Mr. Bekoe had previously been arrested several months ago and was granted bail to facilitate ongoing investigations related to harboring foreign nationals engaged in prostitution. This action is in violation of Act 29 of the Criminal Code of 1960, Aliens’ Registration Regulation 1974 (L.I. 856), Section 13 of the Immigration Service Act 2000 (ACT 573), and other relevant legislations in Ghana.

Currently, the suspects are in the custody of the Western Regional Command Headquarters for further investigations, legal proceedings, and subsequent repatriation to their home country.

“The Service is by this statement averting the minds of Landlords and property owners across the country to be mindful of the existence of the above-stated laws and their consequences by checking and confirming the immigration status of all would-be foreign tenants before renting out their properties to them,” the GIS added.

GIS launches seven-year strategic plan on broader security management

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, launched their seven-year strategic plan at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The 7-year strategic plan is expected to move the Service towards becoming a model organisation for Migration Management and the Security of Ghana.

It would also provide a roadmap for the Ghana Immigration Service to operate an efficient, fair and firm immigration system that meets the social and economic needs of the country.

The plan also provides an effective monitoring and evaluation system which will guide in gauging the performance of the Ghana Immigration Service and the impact of the implementation of the Plan.

At the official launch of the 2023-2029 Strategic Plan for the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Accra, the Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery, reiterated the government’s unwavering support and dedication to achieving the plan’s objectives, particularly in enhancing border security management in the country.

The Minister expressed his confidence in the direction set by the GIS’s seven-year Strategic Plan, which is designed to guide the service’s operations. He noted that the Plan comprehensively outlines the strategies that the Service will adopt to fulfill its mandate over the next seven years.

Mr Ambrose Dery emphasized that the 2023-2029 Strategic Plan focuses on four critical components: Border Management, Transnational Crime Prevention, Enforcement, and Organisational Drivers. Each of these components provides a clear roadmap for realizing the transformational goal of making the Ghana Immigration Service a model agency for Migration Management and the security of Ghana.

He pointed out that the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan led to advancements such as infrastructure improvements, capacity building, recruitment, and the development of GIS officers’ capabilities.

The Minister called upon stakeholders involved in the realm of migration management to collaborate and support the implementation of the activities outlined in the Strategic Plan. This collaboration is expected to enhance the management of migration in Ghana and on a global scale.

Present at the function were also the Ga Mantse, HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Henry Quartey, Chief Director of the Ministry for the Interior, Mrs. Adelaide Annor-Kumi, Heads of the various Security Agencies, the Clergy, past Comptroller-Generals and officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) as well as officers of the other Security Agencies.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has taken disciplinary action against 27 officers, consisting of three senior officers and 24 junior officers, due to their involvement in various offenses that have tarnished the Service’s reputation.

These interdictions were conveyed through a circular signed by the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi.

The officers are accused of engaging in activities such as recruitment and/or visa fraud, which violate the Immigration Service Regulations of 2016.

The interdictions have been initiated to facilitate thorough investigations into the allegations, following internal disciplinary protocols.

Legal actions will be taken against those found guilty after the investigations are concluded.

Among the interdicted officers are Chief Superintendent Philipson Adeti, Superintendent Dominic Eshun, and Assistant Superintendent of Immigration (ASI) Marvin Essandoh.

The remaining officers, including Immigration Control Officers and Assistant Immigration Control Officers, are also part of this disciplinary action.

The GIS, represented by C/Supt. Michael Amoako-Atta, encouraged individuals who may have been affected by the alleged misconduct of these officers to come forward and provide information to aid in the ongoing investigations.

  • Ghana Immigration Service receives new training facilities

Ghana Immigration Service receives new training facilities

Government has set up three new training facilities to enhance the training of officers in the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

These facilities consist of a Mid-Country School located in Tepa, Ashanti Region, a Tactical Training School situated in Kyebi, Eastern Region, and a Centre of Excellence established at Odorkor, Greater Accra Region.

Vice President Bawumia disclosed this development during the parade review of Cadet Intake 17 at the Immigration Service Academy and Training School in Assin Fosu, Central Region.

The government’s intervention aims to equip the first line of the country’s border defense with specialized vehicles, equipment, and arms to safeguard Ghanaians.

The passing-out ceremony of the GIS marked the first event after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

“You will agree with me that the Service occupies a strategic position toward achieving peace and security as well as economic prosperity,” Vice President Bawumia stated.

A total of 357 Cadets completed a seven-month rigorous training program, covering various aspects such as Immigration Law, Practices, and Procedures, Migration Management, Operational Planning, Criminal Procedures, Intelligence Gathering, Investigations, Travel Document Management, Map Reading, Navigation, and the French language.

The Ghana Immigration Service plays a vital role in managing the country’s borders, ensuring proper monitoring of goods and individuals entering and leaving the nation, issuing visas to non-Ghanaians, and contributing to national security, trade, and investment facilitation.

Vice President Bawumia assured that the government would continue to provide the necessary logistical support for the GIS to fulfill its mandate effectively. The Service will be equipped with specialized surveillance equipment, regional offices, residential accommodation, and other critical operational logistics.

“I’m pleased to announce that the Government has delivered its promise of procuring arms and ammunition for the Service to boost its operations and enhance security at the borders,” he said.

“The GIS would be equipped with specialized surveillance equipment, regional offices, residential accommodation, and other critical operational logistics,” he added.

He stressed the importance of adopting a more innovative and robust approach to managing migration in the face of ever-changing global security dynamics. The government has already introduced modern technology, such as the paperless input of traveler’s data at Kotoka International Airport and the use of the Ghana card as an e-passport, establishing the identity of Ghanaians through their fingerprints. This will help preserve travel history and enhance migration management in the collective interest of the State.

Vice President Bawumia also commended the positive relationship and cooperation between the Ghana Immigration Service and sister security agencies, with some of these agencies utilizing the Service’s training facility for their personnel.

“This is why the Government of President Akufo-Addo believes that the GIS has to adopt a more innovative and robust approach to managing migration in the collective interest of the State. I know you have embraced modern technology as the most reliable tool for reaching this goal. Evidence of this is the implementation of technology put in place for the paperless input of traveler’s data at the Kotoka international airport in March 2023.

“We have also seen some level of implementation of the Ghana card as an e-passport (with the Ghana card the identity of people can be established using their fingerprints). Ghana Missions and other Embassies abroad will be able to establish the identity of Ghanaians using their fingerprints. Identity can even be established without the Ghana card if you have been enrolled on the database. The Ghana card is also being linked with existing passports so that travel history will be preserved.”

Naana Eyiah, the Deputy Minister for The Interior, emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the GIS has sufficient personnel to fulfill its mandate.

She highlighted that the GIS is tasked with managing the entry, residence, work, and ethics of individuals in the country, as well as ensuring the security of the nation’s borders.

Naana Eyiah also pointed out that Ghana faces security threats, including cyber security threats, terrorism, and cross-border crimes, within the West African sub-region.

“The urgent need of the time requires that rapid measures are taken to enhance the territorial integrity of the country,” she indicated.

In recognition of Emmanuel Ofosu-Acheampong’s professionalism and bravery, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi, has promoted him to the rank of Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I).

When a young female student was believed to be being kidnapped while traveling by public transportation (Trotro) from Nsawam to Dome in June 2023, AICO I Emmanuel Ofosu-Acheampong of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), stationed at the Kasoa Command in the Central East Region, acted on his gut feelings and prevented the kidnapping.

Angry Nkrankwanta youth attack immigration officers

A group of aggrieved youth in Nkrankwanta, in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region, have attacked officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) who were stationed in the area to prevent illegal activities at the Nkrankwanta-Ivory Coast border.

The attackers were said to have arrested some officers, who were on duty and also succeeded in vandalising the duty post, including some of the station’s operational logistics.

The agitators, yet to be identified, destroyed items such as computers, airconditioners, chairs and tables, a refrigerator, book shelves and documents, among others.

    Cause of attack

It is alleged that one of the officers, stationed at the post, last Sunday knocked down a female resident with a patrol motorbike, killing her on the spot.

In reaction to the incident, the youth attacked the two officers who were on the motorbike and later stormed the station to beat other officers up and arrested some of them in their homes.

However, some of the officers managed to escape to safety and made calls to their colleagues and other opinion leaders from the community to come to their aid.

It is unclear the number of the officers who were at post during the time of the incident and the safety of the officers, including those who were arrested.

    Commander visits

The Daily Graphic gathered from the Bono Regional GIS Command  yesterday that the Regional Commander had led a delegation to the area to assess the extent of injuries, damages and intervene to restore calm.

“It is true, we had a report from the station, but right now, I can’t grant any further information without authorisation from the Regional Commander”, the source explained.

It said the Regional Commander had gone to the scene to ascertain the fact and situation on the ground.

  • 4 GIS officers involved in Bawku rescue mission promoted

4 GIS officers involved in Bawku rescue mission promoted

Four officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) have been honored with promotions in recognition of their courage and selfishness during a rescue operation.

The officers exhibited exceptional bravery while attempting to save three fellow colleagues who had been targeted by unidentified assailants in Bawku on April 3rd of this year.

The three officers whose car came under fire from unknown gunmen on their way to buy food were 30-year-old Assistant Inspector Eric Ayidiya, stationed at the Polimakom border post, and 42-year-old Inspector Lawrence Afari, stationed at Kulungugu post, both of whom got injured and received treatment at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

A third officer, 42-year-old Inspector Philip Motey, died from injuries sustained during the attack. He was laid to rest last Saturday.

The officers who rescued their colleagues: Chief Superintendent (C/Supt.) Michael Brewu Ampofoh was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Immigration.

Assistant Inspector Harris Quartey was promoted to the rank of Inspector; Immigration Control Officer (ICO) Wisdom Elorm Addo was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector, whilst Assistant Immigration Control Officer Grade II Emmanuel Forson was promoted to the rank of Assistant Immigration Control Officer Grade I.

All four officers also received citations, certificates and plaques, recognising their work.

The Controller-General of Immigration, Kwame Asuah Takyi, in an address, said on the evening of April 3, 2023 at about 19:51 hours, Chief Superintendent Michal Brewu Ampofoh, received a distress call from one Assistant Inspector Eric Afari who informed the Bawku Command of the attack by the unknown gunmen who fired several shots at their vehicle, killing Inspector Phillip Motey and injuring two others.

Mr Takyi commended Chief Superintendent Ampofo and the three others for their swift response despite the perilous situation.

“Quickly, Chief Supt. Ampofoh and team of other three officers rushed to the scene while keeping touch with Assistant Inspector Laurence Afari through his phone, receiving directions and reassuring them that help was coming until the team got there… while it shocked me as well as many others how the immigration response team got there faster in spite of the danger on their way,” he said.

He encouraged other officers to follow the example of the four by not turning their backs on fellow colleagues when their assistance was needed especially, in volatile areas of duty such as Bawku.

“All security personnel should hold and teach that we must not turn our backs on our colleagues in any way or form when our help is most needed. I say this because we all know about the situation in the Bawku area and the danger that the conflict poses to security officials and residents as a whole,” he said.

On her part, Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi, the Chief Director at the Ministry of Interior, in an address, on behalf of the Minister, Ambrose Dery, commended the immigration service for recognising the heroic move by the four officers as stipulated in regulation 171D (2016) L.I. 2245 of the Ghana Immigration Service.

Madam Anno-Kumi hinted that Government via the Ministry of Interior recognised threats faced by immigration service officers who worked around the clock to ensure that the country’s borders were safe and protected against all forms of cross border crimes.

She added that government would continue to retool the service to execute its mandate as expected.

The newly promoted Michael Brewu Ampofoh at a media interview said though he was pleased with the recognition for his hard work, he saw this award and promotion as an extra duty which required more efforts and commitment.

“… day in day out when we are promoted from one rank to the other it is an additional responsibility which is a paradigm shift in your behaviour, your operations, your attitudes towards work, how you respond to such calls,” he said.

  • How Aisha Huang used forged marriage documents to acquire permanent residence in Ghana – Witness tells court

The second prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Aisha Huang has detailed how the Chinese national acquired a permanent residency status in Ghana.

Superintendent David Essien on Monday, November 14, 2022, gave his witness statement to the Accra High Court presided by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo where he told the court about the two occasions he ever came into contact with the accused.

According to the prosecution witness, he first met the accused on August 30, 2016, when a publication about her alleged galamsey activities at Bepotenteng in Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region was reported in the media.

The witness who is an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service assigned to the enforcement unit said he was tasked with investigating the report to ascertain the residence status of the accused as well as the allegations contained in the report.

He said the accused person honoured an invitation by the GIS and submitted her passport which showed her status as a permanent resident.

The witness added that he encountered the accused person a second time when a team of immigration officers arrested some Chinese nationals who were engaged in illegal mining activities at Bepotenteng in 2017.

The suspects told the arresting officers that they had their passports with the accused who is their employer.

Superintendent Essien said he later got the accused person to honour an invitation following which her statement was taken and she together with those arrested were sent to the head office of the Immigration Service in Accra.

During the cross-examination of the witness by the defence counsel, lawyer Nkrabea Effah Dartey questioned whether the first encounter between the witness and the accused person was only in reference to her immigration status.

But responding to the question, the witness said it was to investigate other issues about the accused person.

He said the investigations established that the accused had actually acquired her residency permit by purporting to have been married to a Ghanaian and backing same with forged documents.

“When we examined the passport she was on an indefinite permit which was granted her based on her supposed marriage to a Ghanaian known as Anthony Fabian. However, investigations conducted by the Ghana Immigration Service established that the accused used forged marriage certificate and forged Ghana passport in support of her application for the indefinite residence permit,” he said.

The witness told the court that the discovery led to the revocation of the permit granted the accused and also led to her repatriation in 2018.

“As a result of this the comptroller general of the GIS revoked the indefinite residence permit on grounds of fraudulent misrepresentation in accordance with Section 22 Subsection 2 a of Immigration Act 2000 Act 573 which led to the subsequent repatriation of the accused on December 19, 2018,” he stated.

Aisha Huang is facing charges for engaging in mining and the sale of minerals without a license.

She was recently arrested in Ghana following her repatriation in 2018.

Aisha Huang who is said to have been engaged in illegal mining upon her return to the country, according to the prosecution entered the country using forged documents and identity.

Hearing of the case is scheduled to continue on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, with the defence resuming its cross-examination of the prosecution’s second witness.’

  • 38 foreigners grabbed in Accra

About 38 persons alleged to be migrants from Niger were yesterday rounded up at Abofu in Achimota, Accra by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

All women, with some carrying children, the migrants were rounded up during a decongestion exercise in Accra organised by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and led by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey.

They were picked up around 11 a.m. by the GIS to its headquarters for further investigations.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA), NiiBoyeLaryea, told the media that he was informed about the arrival of the migrants by residents around 6a.m yesterday.

He said the alleged migrants were said to have been dropped by a bus around 11 p.m. on Monday with the whereabouts of the bus yet to be known.

Mr Laryea noted that intelligence found out that the migrants were making a transit from Niger to Cote d’ Ivoire and other places.

The MCE said he then informed the Regional Minister and the GISabout the incident while the Assembly’s task force assessed the situation.

The Regional Minister, for his part, stressed the need to treat the issue fairly as Ghana was part of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) and had signed on to its protocols.

MrQuarteyemphasised that there would be collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Gender and Social Protection and the GIS to ensure that the migrants went through the due process and were offered the needed assistance.

The leader of the migrants, MrsMadinaYagoudaNeanti, said they meant no harm as they were heading towards Cote d’ Ivoire only to be dropped at the location by the driver of the bus who was conveying them.

She said that they only needed another vehicle to convey them to their destination but the language barrier had been a challenge as they could not communicate effectively with the driver of the bus that brought them to the Abofulocation.

The Immigration service in Ashanti Region has expressed its preparedness in removing foreign beggars on the streets in the region.

The service says the activities of the beggars raise security concerns and must be addressed.

The Ashanti Regional Immigration Commander, ACI Charles Yaw Bediako, speaking on the issue stated that some of them hold sharp objects and weapons to threaten commuters.

“With these, we think that those people should stay away from the streets,” ACI Bediako added.

ACI Bediako assured the residents in the region that his outfit would use all appropriate means to remove them.

“If you are dealing with foreigners, you are not just dealing with the individual. You are dealing with the country where they come from as well.”

“There should be a holistic and strategic plan to be able to get them off the streets,” he added.

  • GIS uncovers fraudulent recruitment scam

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested one Awuah Forson, 46, and another, for allegedly defrauding about 30 young people on the pretext of securing for them placements in the service.

It is reported that Forson, together with one Ekow Harkman, 71, managed to defraud about 30 people to the tune of GH¢250,000.00 with the promise of recruitment into the Ghana Immigration Service.

Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) James Hayford Boadi, who is Officer-in-Charge of Operations at the Tema Regional Command, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Tema, cautioned job seekers of activities of recruitment scams.

He said “this is not the first time such an arrest has been made and certainly it will not be the last,” and warned young people seeking employment to be vigilant.

ACI Boadi said GIS does not sublet its recruitment process to either individuals or groups of individuals; “every recruitment exercise is done by the GIS alone under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior”.

He advised those who want to join the service to go through the proper process and not to pay money to anybody, because, in the end, they would not be recruited and they would also lose their money.

Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Mercy Budu, who is the GIS Tema Regional Public Relations Officer, said a victim, name withheld, paid about GH¢10,000.00 to the suspect.

She said the victim afterward went to the Immigration Training Academy at Assin Fosu to find out whether the said Forson was actually an employee of the service.

Ms. Budu said the victim discovered that there was no one by that name and reliased that she had been defrauded, her reaction to the fact caught the attention of Assistant Superintendent of Immigration (ASI) Roland Abdul Aziz Issah, who then gave the information to the Tema Regional Command.

She said in a collaborative move by the immigration officers from Assin Fosu and the Tema Regional Command, Forson and Harkman were picked up at Community Eight, Tema.

DSI Budu said some GIS officers posed as persons who are interested in recruitment into the service, and the suspects were arrested in that setup.

The Tema GIS Regional PRO advised persons to seek information directly from the GIS as there are officers in every district in Ghana.

She commended the Tema Regional Commander, ACI Kojo Oppong Yeboah, and the Commandant of the GIS Training Academy at Assin Fosu, ACI Alex Adu for their oversight during the exercise.

Already, he explained, the security along that border was tightened following the threat of terrorism attacks in Burkina Faso.

“Even before the coronavirus outbreak in Burkina Faso, we had enhanced our security visibility along the border between Ghana and Burkina Faso because of the threat of terrorism,” he said.

He further revealed that the immigration officers have been trained by the Ghana Health Service and also retooled to enable them detect suspicious cases.

“We have also been trained so that when we meet suspicious people, we can do appropriate profiling”, he said, adding: “The leadership of the Ghana Immigration Service has also provided sanitisers and protective clothing” for its personnel.

  • Immigration boss’ convoy involved in accident at Suhum

Two persons have been reported injured while several others escaped unhurt after a convoy of the Director-General of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), caused an accident at the Suhum overhead on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The accident reportedly happened Sunday evening around 4.30 pm.

The convoy which was made up of the GIS boss, Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi’s official vehicle, one Immigration vehicle and two motorcycles were heading to Accra from the Kumasi direction.

An eyewitness said the motor riders, upon approaching the Suhum overpass roundabout stopped in the middle of the road and ordered a private motorist whom they thought was chasing the convoy to stop.

According to the eyewitness, Mr Kwame Takyi got infuriated over the conduct of the private motorist and alighted from his vehicle to have a word with him, an instance that caused heavy vehicular traffic on the stretch.

The report said, while the confrontation was ongoing in the middle of the road, a 40-footer container with registration number GW 102-13, travelling from Kumasi to Accra failed its brake and smashed into other two cars ahead.

The trailer driver and his mate sustain injuries and were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment at the emergency centre.

The GIS boss reportedly drove off after the accident occurred without attending to it.

The situation has forced the drivers to divert to a section of the overhead which has not yet been commissioned and opened to traffic.

At the time of filing this report, a towing vehicle had been deployed to the accident scene to tow the mangled trailer from the road.
