NDC apologizes to Kufuor following Dela Edem’s “distasteful” remarks

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued an apology to former President John Agyekum Kufuor after one of its communicators, Dela Edem, made comments the party has deemed disrespectful to the respected statesman.

In a statement released on Sunday, November 17, 2024, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, condemned Edem’s remarks as “unsavoury and distasteful,” and expressed regret over the incident.

The party acknowledged that Edem had apologized to the former president, and it voiced its support for his apology.

“The attention of the National Communications Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been drawn to some unfortunate comments attributed to one of its members, Comrade Dela Edem, and directed at the person of former President and elderly statesman, H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor.

The NDC reaffirmed its respect for the elderly and hoped the apology would put the matter to rest. The party also called on its communicators to focus on issues as they continue to campaign.

“The said comments are unsavoury and distasteful. It is therefore refreshing to note that our comrade in question has duly retracted his statements and rendered an unqualified apology to the elderly statesman,” parts of the statement shared on social media read.

It added, “The NDC adds its voice to the apology that has been rendered and hopes that this retraction and apology bring closure to the matter.”

The party reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the elderly in society.

Additionally, it called on its communicators to prioritize issue-focused campaigns when sharing the party’s vision with Ghanaians.

“The NDC as a party accords utmost respect to the elderly in our society and honour to our statesmen.

“The party strongly advises all communicators to remain focused on propagating the transformational policies of the visionary nation-builder, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and the NDC for a resounding victory on December 7, 2024,” it added.

    Dela Edem’s remarks:

While speaking on Accra-based TV XYZ, Dela Edem made some inappropriate comments about former President John Agyekum Kufuor following an interview in which Kufuor encouraged Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Let me say something to President Kufuor. He should be careful; I expect him to stay in his lane. He should enjoy his retirement with the riches he had from being president. He is in a wheelchair as payment for his sins as president,” he said.

Despite being urged by the host, Mugabe Maase, to retract his statements, Dela Edem stood by his words and expressed no regrets, claiming he firmly believed in what he had said.

His remarks were met with widespread public condemnation, as many felt he had unjustly attacked a man who had not provoked him.

    His Apology:

In a social media post, Dela Edem later apologized for the offensive and disrespectful comments directed at the former president.

Acknowledging the error in his earlier statements, which he had refused to retract on television, he admitted his mistake after facing significant public backlash.

“I sincerely render an unqualified apology to President Kufuor for the comments I made in reference to his ‘wheelchair’. Thank you!”

  • Akufo-Addo to blame for rising exodus of healthcare professionals – NDC

Akufo-Addo to blame for rising exodus of healthcare professionals – NDC

Prof. Titus Beyuo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Lambussie, has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration over the growing migration of nurses and doctors abroad.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Prof. Beyuo attributed the exodus of healthcare professionals to the government’s poor management of the health sector and inadequate compensation, which he claims are pushing workers to seek better opportunities overseas.

He pointed out that the brain drain in the healthcare sector has worsened under the current government, with many professionals losing faith in Ghana’s economic prospects.

Prof. Beyuo expressed hope that a change in government during the 2024 elections could restore confidence and help retain medical talent in the country.

He reassured the public that the NDC is committed to implementing policies aimed at strengthening the economy and providing adequate incentives for doctors and nurses to remain in Ghana.

“Brain drain has become worse under this government and has taken a different dimension. And our government in waiting [NDC] is mindful of this because if you check, Brian Drain earlier was in pursuit of higher academic qualifications, and people wanted to go and specialise.

“Currently, the people exiting this country as health workers, are the most experienced specialists, consultants with higher levels, and very qualified staff. The reason is this, people have lost hope in this country.

“There’s a case of hopelessness and despondency, I’m telling you that a change in government alone will restore some confidence in people who will want to stay. A change in government from NPP to NDC alone will restore some confidence in our economy and will lead to people wanting to stay.

“Our government intend to introduce an ethical migration policy where people who will leave for these countries will have a planning system with our partner countries and the World Health Organisation and the country will be compensated for these people leaving.

“We also have a motivation package for our nurses and doctors. We’re promising equitable distribution of health workers across the country.”

  • Court adjourns Joana Cudjoe’s disqualification case to Nov 11

Court adjourns Joana Cudjoe’s disqualification case to Nov 11

The Sekondi High Court, led by His Lordship George K. Gyan-Kontoh, has deferred the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s request to lift the injunction on Amenfi Central Parliamentary candidate Joana Gyan Cudjoe and to overturn her disqualification.

The hearing is now set for Monday, November 11, 2024.

This decision follows an appeal from Edudzie Tamakloe, lead counsel for Joana Gyan Cudjoe, who urged the court to expedite the main disqualification case.

Edudzie Tamakloe argued that further delays could bar Cudjoe from running in the December 7 parliamentary election.

In response, His Lordship George K. Gyan-Kontoh agreed to address the substantive case but encouraged both parties to attempt an out-of-court resolution before the next session.

Supporters of Joana Gyan Cudjoe, who were present in the courtroom, also pressed for a quick resolution to allow her participation in the upcoming election.

“I needed the court to leave the injunction so that the EC would allow us to contest. That is what we want now. We want to be in the game and not just sit back and observe. We are very worried and everything should be quick because we have just one month before the election.”

  • Help bring Mahama back, just like Americans have brought back Trump – NDC pleads

Help bring Mahama back, just like Americans have brought back Trump – NDC pleads

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has swiftly reacted to the outcome of the recent U.S. election, drawing strong parallels between the political situation in the United States and Ghana’s upcoming December elections.

The party is urging Ghanaians to vote for former President John Mahama, emphasizing his ability to address the country’s pressing economic issues.

Dr. Rashid Tanko, NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections in charge of IT, shared his views during an interview on Joy News’ AM Show on November 6, 2024.

He described the U.S. election results as “refreshing” for the NDC, claiming that the outcome mirrored Ghana’s current political and economic struggles.

Dr. Tanko pointed to the economic turmoil under the Biden administration in the U.S. and likened it to the situation in Ghana under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

“The economic potholes in America were too much; it’s just like what we are going through in Ghana,” he said.

Highlighting the similarities between the U.S. and Ghana, Dr. Tanko questioned whether Ghanaians would continue to support the government amidst economic hardship.

“In Ghana, let’s compare the same economic challenges we are facing. Americans rejected a government over their economic problems, so do you think Ghanaians will maintain a government in a similar situation?” he asked. “We are very clear in our minds, and we have told Ghanaians that if you want us to be respected in the field of international diplomacy, you need to vote for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.”

Dr. Tanko emphasized, “Americans have gone back to Trump, so what will stop you from bringing back John Mahama to continue what he was doing and to address the economic downturn the country is facing? The Americans have shown us the way.”

  • SALL’s disenfranchisement undermines our democracy – Mahama

SALL’s disenfranchisement undermines our democracy – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has once again slammed the judiciary over the lack of parliamentary representation for the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL), a situation that has persisted since 2020.

Mahama called this a glaring failure in upholding democratic principles, arguing that the people of SALL have been denied their right to be heard, with no parliamentary representative to champion their interests.

During a campaign visit to Akpafu, Mahama described the issue as the “cardinal sin” of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

He emphasised that the judiciary must act fairly and consistently in addressing the lack of representation for SALL, warning that any form of inconsistency would undermine the justice system’s credibility.

“The justice system must be consistent if it is inconsistent, it is not fair to the people of this country, because you can’t treat people, one way. Four years they can be without a member of parliament, it doesn’t matter, their representation is not important to you Gyakye Quayson should be out of parliament for almost two years it doesn’t matter because the Assin North people are not your people, then it comes to NPP.

“The Speaker declares their seat vacant for one and a half months until we go to the election that one it is unheard of, their human rights are being affected I mean, what kind of justice system is this? We believe that an injustice was done to the people of SALL and as it is called the cardinal sin of the fourth republic and never again must this happen”.

He pointed to the case of Gyakye Quayson in Assin North, where the seat was declared vacant for over a month, as an example of how differently the system treats different constituencies.

“Four years without a representative for the people of SALL, while other constituencies are treated differently, is not acceptable,” Mahama said. “If the judiciary is inconsistent, it is not fair to the people of this country. This is an injustice that must not be repeated.”

He further stressed that all citizens of Ghana, including those from SALL, should be treated equally before the law.

  • My stature will win me Effiduase-Asokore seat – NDC PC

My stature will win me Effiduase-Asokore seat – NDC PC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Effiduase-Asokore constituency, Raymond Opoku Agyemang, is confident that his physical stature and appearance will significantly influence his ability to win over voters.

In a recent interview with Angel FM, Agyemang noted that his “imposing frame and appealing looks” have garnered admiration from residents, with many constituents indicating their support for him based on these attributes.

“My believe that I will win the Effiduase seat has now being reinforced because when I started having real contact with the constituents or voters in Effiduase most of them were saying that their MP was their Goliath. But when I also look at my stature, I am more than that Goliath they are talking about. People are excited when they see me.

“Sometimes, some of the guys tell me if they were women, they would have married me. Others even go to the extent of saying that they are willing to give their daughters to me to have children with them so that they can have someone like me in their family. I am not boasting, that is the reality on the ground,” he said in an interview on Angel FM, Kumasi.

When questioned about whether he thinks his stature will sway the electorate in his favor, he conveyed a sense of optimism.

“There are so many dynamics in politics, when a dynamic or anything works in your favour, that is where you need to hit. So even during the primary, many NPP supporters campaigned for me and told NDC delegates that I am then one who can contest their MP.”

Currently, the Effiduase-Asokore seat is held by the influential politician Nana Ayew Afriye.

With the December 7 parliamentary elections nearing, political analysts generally forecast that Afriye of the NPP will retain his position. However, Agyemang maintains a hopeful outlook regarding his own prospects in the race.

  • Tom Brady speaks on divorce from Gisele Bündchen: ‘All you can do is the best you can do’

After his recent divorce from his wife of 13 years, Gisele Bündchen, Tom Brady is focusing on family and football.

“I think there are a lot of professionals in life that go through things that they deal with at work and they deal with at home,” Brady said on the latest episode of his podcast Lets Go! With Tom Brady. “Obviously, the good news is it’s a very amicable situation, and I’m really focused on two things: taking care of my family, and certainly my children, and secondly doing the best job I can to win football games. That’s what professionals do.”

He continued, “You focus at work when it’s time to work, and then when you come home, you focus on the priorities that are at home. All you can do is the best you can do. That’s what I’ll just continue to do as long as I’m working and as long as I’m being a dad.”

The comments come after news broke that the couple had undergone formal divorce proceedings in Florida on Friday. Rumors of a rift between the pair, who were married in 2009 and share two children together, were initially reported by TMZ in September. The outlet claimed Brady and Bündchen were living separately following Brady’s publicized and dramatic un-retirement from football.

“We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration,” Brady wrote in a statement after his divorce became official. “Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world.”

Bündchen also penned her own statement, which read in part: “The decision to end a marriage is never easy but we have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always.”

While on his Let’s Go! podcast, Brady echoed these sentiments and said he’s just trying to do the best he can do.

“I’ve dealt with a lot of challenging situations on and off the field over 23 years and a lot of it does play out in front of a lot of people,” he said.

“Everyone’s going through different things, we all have our unique challenges in life and we’re all humans and we do the best we can do. I have incredible parents that have always taught me the right way to do things. I wanna be a great father to my children and always try to do things the right way as well.”

  • Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady have announced their divorce

After 13 years of marriage, model Gisele Bundchen and NFL player Tom Brady have announced their divorce.

Both posted statements on their Instagram stories confirming their divorce.

“We came to this decision amicably and gratefully for the time we spent together,” Brady explained.

Bundchen added: “We will continue co-parenting to give our children the love, care, and attention they greatly deserve.”

The couple have two children together, along with Brady’s son with his ex-partner actress Bridget Moynahan.

Brady and Bundchen started dating in 2006 and got married in early 2009.

The news of their divorce comes after Brady returned to the NFL for another season despite previously announcing his retirement.

In his statement, Brady said: “We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration.

“Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world.

“However we only wish the best for each other as we pursue whatever new chapters in our lives are yet to be written.”

The statement concluded by asking for “privacy and respect” as they “navigate what is to come”.

Bundchen, who is Brazilian, has been one of the highest-paid models in the world since 2001, after rising to fame in the late 1990s.

Brady is a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but spent his first 20 seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots.

  • Gisele Bündchen reportedly ready to ‘move on’ from Tom Brady marriage

A Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady reconciliation? It seems unlikely.

A source tells People magazine that the 42-year-old super model is “done” with the relationship and is ready to move on from her 13-year marriage. The news comes about a month after Bündchen and Brady reportedly separated due to disagreements about the latter’s un-retirement.

“She is done with their marriage. She was upset about it for a long time and it’s still difficult, but she feels like she needs to move on,” the insider told the outlet. “She doesn’t believe that her marriage can be repaired … She is just trying to figure out her life.”

The source said Bündchen doesn’t have much contact with Brady, but “is doing OK.” The two tied the knot in 2009 and share two children: a 12-year-old son named Benjamin Rein, and a 9-year-old daughter named Vivian Lake. Brady also has a 15-year-old son, John Edward, whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan. The insider said Bündchen “feels bad” for the children, but doesn’t expect to face any custody issues during the divorce proceedings.

In February, Brady confirmed he was retiring from the NFL after 22 seasons; however, he announced his return to the league just 40 days later—a decision that Bündchen seemingly opposed.

“Obviously, I have my concerns—this is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be more present,” Gisele told Elle. “I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for [them]. He needs to follow his joy, too.”

Sources say the two have since retained divorce lawyers. The news came less than a year after Brady and Bündchen purchased a $17 million property on Miami Beach’s Indian Creek Island. An insider said Bündchen would prefer to stay in the area even after the divorce.

“Gisele loves Miami. She has friends there. She can see herself living there permanently,” the source said. “Again, she is still trying to figure things out. She is doing yoga, meditating and taking care of herself. She doesn’t put any pressure on herself to make drastic decisions.”
