Dwight Howard, former NBA player, receives criticism in China for referring to Taiwan as a ‘country’

After referring to Taiwan as a “country” in a promotional film with the democratic island’s vice president, former NBA player Dwight Howard has become the most recent foreign sports figure to fall under the fire of Chinese nationalists.

Since joining Taiwan’s professional team Taoyuan Leopards from the Los Angeles Lakers in November of last year, the 37-year-old eight-time NBA All-Star has experienced tremendous popularity there.

“Since I arrived in Taiwan, my appreciation for this nation has completely changed. In a two-minute web video, Howard remarked, “This place makes me feel so much love.

Taiwan is a self-ruled democracy with its own military, currency, constitution and elected government, although it is not officially recognized as an independent country by most governments in the world.

China’s ruling Communist Party claims Taiwan as its own territory, despite having never controlled it, and has refused to rule out the use of force to “unify” the island with mainland China.

The Taiwan issue is a central piece to Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s vision of “national rejuvenation,” a nationalistic agenda that has stoked cross-strait tensions to their highest in decades.

Under growing economic, diplomatic and military pressure from China, Taiwan has sought to promote its robust democratic system and free and open society to win friends internationally.

The video, released Wednesday, is part of the island’s promotional campaign to invite foreign tourists to spend a night at the Presidential Office Building in Taipei.

Howard appeared in the video alongside Taiwan Vice President William Lai, who has been nominated by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party as its candidate for the presidential election next year.

When Lai told Howard international travelers can enjoy an overnight stay with breakfast at the Presidential Office Building, the basketball star exclaimed: “That is crazy! I don’t even know that’s legal in my country or not.”

“That’s why Taiwan is a free country,” Lai replied.

“OK! I like it,” Howard said.

The video sparked immediate furor in China after it was reposted on Chinese social media.

On Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, users accused Howard of supporting Taiwan independence and demanded an apology from him.

The hashtag “Howard Taiwan independence” became the top trending topic on Weibo on Friday morning, and garnered more than 400 million views by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, censors have quietly taken down the full video, in which Howard heaped praise on Taiwan for its hospitality, “great and friendly living environment” and “great diverse culture.”

It also showed the interior of the Presidential Office Building, a large suite for the overnight stay, and tourists posing for photos with Taiwan’s military honor guards.

Zhongnanhai, an imperial garden in central Beijing that serves as the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party, is strictly off the limits to tourists for visits, let alone an overnight stay.

Amid growing anger, Howard on Friday described his use of the word “country” as a “communication barrier.”

“Where I’m from if I say I wanna go to the country, it doesn’t not mean that place is a country. It’s just how we talk,” he told Taiwanese reporters during an event in Yilan county.

“If I offended anyone in China I apologize. It was not my intention to harm anyone with what I said in the commercial,” he said.

“I am not a politician. I don’t want to get involved in any politics… I have the utmost respect for Chinese people and utmost respect for Taiwanese people, so it was never my intent to disrespect nobody.”

Howard’s team did not respond to a request for comment from CNN.

Under Washington’s longstanding “one China” policy, the US acknowledges Beijing’s position that Taiwan is part of China, but has never officially recognized the Chinese Communist Party’s claim to the democratic island of more than 23 million. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, Washington is also bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.

In a statement to CNN, Taiwan’s Presidential Spokesperson Kolas Yotaka said it was “sad” to see some Chinese internet users “have their hearts broken.”

“We do not intend to break their hearts. We welcome them to stay in Taiwan for a few nights. If you know more about Taiwan, you will know why politicians, athletes, tourists, and entrepreneurs from all over the world like to come to our country,” she said.

This is not the first time figures linked to the NBA have sparked controversy in China, where it is among the most popular international sports leagues.

In 2021, Enes Kanter, center for the Boston Celtics, called Chinese leader Xi Jinping a “brutal dictator” over China’s treatment of Tibet, sparking an immediate backlash.

Two years earlier then-Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey set off a firestorm when he tweeted his support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

Soon after, the NBA’s Chinese partners suspended ties, state broadcaster CCTV halted all broadcasts of preseason matches, and the Chinese government said the NBA needed to show “mutual respect.”

Morey apologized and deleted the tweet, and the NBA said his comments were “regrettable” — prompting outrage from fans in the United States and Hong Kong, who accused the league of censorship and bowing to Beijing’s pressure.

International brands and businesses have also found themselves the targets of vocal consumer boycotts on the mainland if they are seen to describe Taiwan as being separate or sovereign.

In 2021, Hollywood star John Cena had to profess his love for China after calling Taiwan a “country” during an interview promoting a film that generated a backlash among Chinese fans.

Taiwan first began allowing visitors to stay at the Presidential Office Building complex in 2019, when it attracted 167 applications from 33 countries.

The campaign, organized by the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC), a non-government organization in Taiwan, was restarted this year after being suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It allows a maximum of 20 foreign visitors to spend one night in the complex free of charge, but they are required to turn their experience into social media videos to promote tourism in Taiwan, according to the island’s Central News Agency.

Responding to the outrage in China against the promotional video, GACC Secretary-General Lee Hou-ching said: “Taiwan is a democratic, pluralistic, friendly country with freedom of speech. We are used to having different voices in our daily lives and respect everyone’s right to speak.”

America will be guided by its allies in Africa – US Veep

Partnerships between African governments will focus on what America can do with Africa, not only what it can do for Africa, according to USA Vice President Kamala Harris.

She made this statement while giving a keynote speech on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at the Black Stars Square in Accra as part of her activities while visiting Ghana.

“So, then, what does it mean that the United States of America is all in? It means that the United States is committed to strengthening our partnerships across the continent of Africa — partnerships with governments, the private sector, civil society, and all of you.

“Partnerships based on openness, inclusiveness, candor, shared interests, and mutual benefits,” she said.

She continued,”And to be clear, America will be guided not by what we can do for our African partners, but what we can do with our African partners. Together, she said America and Africa will address the challenges they face and and as well pursue the incredible opportunities ahead.

    Investment in innovation

Kamala Harris also recommended the investment in innovation for African Governments.

“Innovation I believe to be the pursuit of what can be unburdened by what has been. Innovation results in one’s ability not only to see, but to do things differently. New methods, new products, new approaches, new ideas. We innovate to be more effective and to solve problems.

“From the invention of new technology, to the origin of social movements, innovation has come about by challenging the premise, questioning the status quo, and bold thinking,” she said.

The US Vice President added that, ”And so to the young leaders here today, you, by your very nature, are dreamers and innovators. It is your spark, your creativity, and your determination that will drive the future.

“And with that then, African ideas and innovations will shape the future of the world. And so we must invest in the African ingenuity and creativity, which will unlock incredible economic growth and opportunities, not only for the people of the 54 countries that make up this diverse continent, but for the American people and people around the world.”

  • Let’s establish a coalition for economic advancement – Oppong Nkrumah

Let’s establish a coalition for economic advancement – Oppong Nkrumah

The development of consensus between the government and stakeholders is essential for the economic development of the nation, according to Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the minister of information.

According to him, such regular engagements are necessary for finding common grounds on issues of concern to citizens.

He made the comments when the Pentecostal and Charismatic Council presented a communiqué to the government in Accra on Monday 6th February 2023 following its recent National Conference.

Mr Nkrumah commended the group for not only concentrating on the church and spiritual matters but also paying attention to contemporary social and economic issues which impact livelihoods.

“The need for constant engagement and consensus building between Government and stakeholders within the economy cannot be over-emphasized. Among other things, we need Consensus for economic progress. Different stakeholders have different interests and objectives. And if each stakeholder sticks to an unyielding position we can hardly make progress.

“It is important that we engage regularly to find common ground on these things that matter most to us collectively,” he said.

He assured the council that matters raised in the communiqué are of keen interest to any administration and his Ministry will do well to ensure that the attention of central government is brought to these matters, some keener attention is paid to them and middle ground found on as many of them as possible

The President of the Council Apostle Eric Nyamekye who led the delegation to present the document to the Minister for Information said the church was always ready to play its role in nation-building by sharing feedback and using its platforms to educate and create awareness on national issues.

He appealed to the government to critically look at issues raised in the communique and addressed them in these crucial times, especially in the economy.

  • ‘Government must deepen engagement with Organised Labour in 2023’ – GFL

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has called on the government to deepen broad-based engagement with Organised Labour in 2023 to reduce labour agitations, discontent, demonstrations and industrial actions.

Mr Abraham Koomson, the GFL Secretary General, who made the call at the Ghana News Agency Industrial News Hub Platform in Tema on Friday, said the posture of the government and its agencies in managing institutions had a direct correlation on industrial turbulence or peace on the labour front.

He noted that for Ghana to overcome the economic crisis next year, the government must build bridges and engage labour leaders in an open and frank discussion.

2023 offered the government an opportunity to listen to labour leaders as social partners to create a platform for deliberations and working together to accelerate Ghana’s development and ease economic burdens, he said.

Mr Koomson said the rigid posture of some government officials most often triggered unrest.

“The government needs to be willing to share ideas and involve social partners in deliberations on economic matters of the country instead of keeping conversations within its domains and seeking for help when issues get worse,” he said.

“Social partners can help the government in analysing key development issues and avoid situations like going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance.”

Mr Koomson explained that social partnerships would accelerate inclusive growth and transform the Ghanaian economy, create opportunities, and create jobs to improve the living standards of the citizenry.

He said labour would continue to fight for what was right for employees, including better working conditions and value addition to the workforce to promote development.

He called for unity within the labour front to collectively fight for the interests of workers, adding: “We must rise up and fight for our fair share of the national cake”.

Mr Koomson said because of disunity among the labour unions successive governments had exploited the divisions and infiltrated into the leadership to pursue their political interests instead of fighting against labour injustice.

It was inappropriate for any labour union to put their political interests above the needs of workers, he said, and called for pragmatic solutions to the disjointed labour front.

He questioned why some workers retired on their full salary with other entitlements while others retired on virtually nothing.

“These are errors and unfair treatment in the labour front, which we must all work together to correct going forward”.

“We all work for the same state, either we all retire on our full salaries and other benefits or we all go home without it. The animal farm policies must give way”.

  • There will be no Ghana to rule if current hardship is not resolved – Gen. Nunoo-Mensah to Mahama

Former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier-General (Rtd) Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, has urged ex-President John Dramani Mahama to help the current government find solutions to the hardship in the country.

According to him, it is in the interest of Mahama to help President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo because if the hardship in Ghana is not alleviated soon, there will be no county for him Mahama to lead.

He intimated that it is the wish of Mahama and the opposition National Democratic Congress that the Akufo-Addo administration fails for them to become the next government which is not the best.

He added that the toppling of governments in recent times due to economic hardship should serve as an example to the former president.

“Our leaders don’t always act in our interest. The problem we have now is that President Mahama is waiting for Akufo-Addo to fail so that he becomes the next leader. He has to be careful because Ghana may not be there for them to rule if care is not taken.

“If you don’t know death, look at sleep. Look at Libya, look at Sri Lanka, look at Lebanon. My warning is not from a stupid thought; I am speaking based on logic.

“We are sitting in this country, and people are hungry. I have never seen hunger like this; I have never seen it… where we are heading is dangerous. People are hungry in this country, and we have to be really careful,” he said in Twi.

But former President John Dramani Mahama has, on a number of occasions, preferred solutions to the current challenges in the country and has also advised Akufo-Addo to hold a national dialogue and bring together some of the country’s best brains to solve the current economic crisis.

In a Facebook post, Mahama said, “a national dialogue on the economy, bringing some of our best brains together will serve us well, even as we prepare for debt restructuring and negotiation of an IMF programme.”
