Greek speaker of parliament faces criminal charges after brawl in parliament

The speaker of Greece’s parliament stated that he plans to request the police to detain a politician who allegedly assaulted another politician during a debate on Wednesday.

The person in charge of making laws was suspended for 15 days because they got into a fight just outside the meeting room where they were talking. Many of their coworkers saw the fight happen.

“We can charge the person who did this terrible and savage attack with a serious crime quickly,” said Speaker Constantine Tassoulas.

He said that lawmakers are protected from punishment for minor crimes, but not for serious ones. He told the parliament’s police to take the lawmaker to the authorities who decide on punishment.

The fight happened a few hours before Greece’s top court is supposed to announce which political parties can participate in the June 9 European Parliament election.

The court will think about a request from three political parties to remove the far-right Spartans party because they are linked to the extreme right Golden Dawn. Some of the top members of Golden Dawn were put in jail in 2020 for being part of a criminal group.

Greek F-16 crashes in the middle of training flight

Greek officials reported that a military airplane, called an F-16, crashed into the Aegean Sea while it was practicing flying on Wednesday. The pilot jumped out of the plane and was saved later.

The accident happened close to a small island called Psathoura, 175 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Athens. It happened after a single-seat jet fighter took off from an air base in central Greece.

The pilot was saved by a helicopter sent by the military and coast guard working together, the air force said. The pilot had to go to the hospital so that doctors could keep an eye on him for a while.

Greece is making its F-16 planes better as part of a big plan to update its military. This is so they can keep up with Turkey, which is their rival in the region.

On Wednesday, a crash happened after Greece got three new navy helicopters from the United States near Athens. Lockheed Martin will give four more MH-60R helicopters in 2025.

  • Greek ship struck by missile in the Red Sea – Report

Greek ship struck by missile in the Red Sea – Report

A ship from Malta with a Greek owner was hit by a missile in the Red Sea near Yemen, according to Ambrey, a company that provides security for ships.

It is believed to be the third time the big ship named Zografia has been involved in something bad in the last day.

On Tuesday, the US military said they stopped weapons from Iran that were meant for the Houthis.

At the same time, the US has attacked more places in areas of Yemen controlled by the Houthi group.

An American official told CBS, which works with the BBC, that the US did more attacks on Houthi positions last night.

The US and UK bombed many Houthi targets on 11 January after the Houthi group attacked ships in the Red Sea.

We still don’t know what was targeted in the recent US operation.

The Houthis promised to fight back, and the US said it stopped a missile from hitting one of its ships that was launched from a Houthi- controlled area in Yemen.

The fighters of the movement have attacked several ships in protest against Israel’s war with Hamas since November.

However, many people do not have any ties to Israel.

The Red Sea connects the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, but some shipping companies are now taking a longer route around the Cape of Good Hope to reach Europe instead.

On Tuesday, the US announced that the weapons they found on a ship near Yemen were similar to the ones the Houthis used in their attacks in the Red Sea.

The robbery happened on January 11th near the coast of Somalia, which was the same day as the first US-UK airstrikes.

Missile parts and defense equipment were found on a ship.

US Central Command said they have captured the first shipment of dangerous, Iranian-made weapons to the Houthis since the attacks on ships began in November 2023.

The search is still going on for two Navy Seals who fell overboard during the mission.

Media said that an officer fell off the ship because of big waves, and another officer jumped in to help, as they are supposed to do.

A Corfu police officer died while on vacation.

Both the force and the Surrey Police Federation claimed that they were attempting to assist her friends, family, and coworkers.

The circumstances behind the tragedy are being investigated by the Greek government.

“We await further updates from them,” the force said, adding that they are still conducting their investigations.

According to a representative of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”

  • Greece offers free trips to Rhodes to individuals displaced by wildfires

Greece offers free trips to Rhodes to individuals displaced by wildfires

There has been compensation granted to the thousands of tourists who had to leave Rhodes due to destructive wildfires.

In July, large portions of the Greek island were consumed by flames that raged for days, severely damaging hotels and residences.

The inferno started on July 18 in the centre of Rhodes, but due to high winds, it quickly moved to the east and south shores, which are home to many beach resorts.

Over 7,500 acres of land were burned, forcing more than 20,000 tourists and residents to hastily pack their bags and flee the depressing images.

Rhodes entered a state of “extreme danger” emergency as a result of the wildfires and the 44C temperature spike.

In the end, it meant that many individuals had their holidays cut short among the bloodshed.

However, the Greek prime minister is now pleading with visitors to return the following year by offering them a free one-week stay.

According to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who spoke to ITV, “For all those whose vacation was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in collaboration with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes, next spring, next fall, so that we can ensure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty.”

According to him, 15% of Rhodes was impacted by the wildfires, and while things are now “back to normal,” the authorities “understand that it caused some inconvenience for visitors.”

Ranch owner Lee Manning of the United Kingdom joined the volunteers helping to save animals as he drove through a wildfire that was threatening to consume his refuge.

Shortly after flames approached within 300 metres of the gorgeous horseback riding facility he and his wife Katie maintain in the village of Gennadi, he sent an emotional video message.

He stated in the video, wiping away tears, “Gennadi is in a really bad way; the locals have been amazing, and that’s island-wide; that’s not just Gennadi, that’s everywhere.”

The locals are the only reason visitors and locals alike are safe on this island.

They have been incredible, I’ve never seen anything like it, and right now there are soldiers risking their life for people’s homes they don’t even know

The locals have suffered a disastrous knock-on impact as a result of the flames, which have destroyed livelihoods and businesses.

In order to contain the fires and aid in the rescue of any trapped animals, firefighters and rescuers have worked nonstop.

The actual extent of the destruction caused by the fires on the land was revealed by satellite photographs.

Wildfires in the Mediterranean, according to Mr. Mitsotakis, are not uncommon, but climate change has made them more intense.

In addition, according to a preliminary analysis of the effects of the flames, Greek officials said on Wednesday that 45 buildings had been damaged on the island.

Greece’s economy, which recovered from a fiscal crisis in 2018, is primarily driven by tourism, and Rhodes, the ninth-largest island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, is a well-liked vacation destination.
