Sing-a-thon: “I couldn’t wake up on day 2, it was beyond medical treatment” – Afua Asantewaa reveals

Ghanaian journalist and women’s rights advocate, Afua Asantewaa, who attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest sing-a-thon, has shared some horrifying details of her ordeal during the event.

She revealed that on the second day of her singing marathon, she lost her voice completely and went into a coma-like state, unable to wake up or respond to anyone.

She said she was saved by her faith in God and the power of Psalm 23, which she read from her Bible that she had brought with her.

She made these revelations when she went to Reverend Sam Korankye Ankrah’s Royalhouse Chapel International to thank God and also Ghanaians for their prayers and support.

During the service, the reverend called her up on stage and asked her what kept her going when she felt tired and exhausted and wanted to give up.

Afua Asantewaa answered and said, “Psalm 23. I had a Bible with me and prior to the attempt, I had the zeal that I shouldn’t leave my Bible behind. So I think on the second day I lost my voice totally. I didn’t know what was happening. It was beyond medical treatment, yeah and then I remembered that this is why I asked you to go with your Bible. So I opened Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, he makes me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside the still waters, he restores my soul. The second day was very terrible, we had an attack and it was meant to just shut the whole process down. According to my team I couldn’t wake up, they were calling, I was not responding.”

She continued, “I just have one thing to tell God. I have been his eye, regardless of everything. He has been with me and people didn’t understand the courage that I had, it’s not a mere courage. I know who I have trusted and who I believed in, so I say thank you to God. This is not my doing, he did it because I didn’t remember which day I was, along the way I don’t remember how we started on Sunday, all I realized that we have ended, so I give him the praise.”

She also encouraged the congregation to step out of their comfort zone and pursue their dreams with faith.

She said, “And to everybody here, I encourage you, I want to encourage each and every one to step out of your comfort zone, we are too comfortable, we are extremely comfortable and that hurts. Move out of your comfort zone with faith. All you need is faith. With faith, you move mountains. Ignore what people tell you, listen to your conscience and your faith and you’ll be guided to the right path, thank you.”

Afua Asantewaa, who has been appointed as a Tourism Ambassador, sang for a total of 126 hours and 53 minutes, from December 24 to December 29, 2023.

She sang about 120 Ghanaian songs, focusing exclusively on songs from Ghana, particularly celebrating Highlife, Hiplife, and Gospel genres

The current record, set in 2012 by Indian Sunil Waghmare, stands at 105 hours.

Afua Asantewaa started her sing-a-thon on December 24, 2023, at midnight and ended it on December 29, 2023, at 6:52 am, clocking 126 hours and 52 minutes.

Her attempt is yet to be verified by the Guinness World Record judges.

  • US’ Max Park breaks record for fastest time in solving cube

US’ Max Park breaks record for fastest time in solving cube

Max Park, an acclaimed speedcuber and Guinness World Records Hall of Famer from the USA, has set a new record for the fastest time to solve a 3x3x3 rotating puzzle cube.

The 21-year-old achieved a remarkable time of 3.13 seconds, surpassing the previous record set by Yusheng Du of China in 2018 by 0.34 seconds.

Max accomplished this feat at the Pride in Long Beach 2023 event held in California, USA, on June 11, 2023.

Prior to this achievement, Max’s fastest single solve stood at 3.63 seconds, placing him in second position behind Yusheng Du’s record of 3.47 seconds.

Max Park is widely recognized in the speedcubing community and holds numerous records in various cube categories.

He currently holds both the single solve and average solve world records for the 4x4x4 cube, 5x5x5 cube, 6x6x6 cube, and 7x7x7 cube. Additionally, he previously shared the 3x3x3 average record with Tymon Kolasiński of Poland, until it was surpassed by 9-year-old Yiheng Wang from China on March 12, 2023, with a time of 4.69 seconds.

With this latest shake-up to the speedcubing world, we edge ever closer to seeing a sub-three-second record being set. Will Max be the one to finally do it?

Max is no stranger to setting seemingly impossible records. When he set the 7x7x7 single record with a time of 1 minute 40 seconds, cubing veteran Erik Akkersdijk described it as the most impressive thing he’d ever seen.

“The record will likely stand for some time,” Erik said. He was wrong though – Max went on to smash it in 2022 with a time of 1 minute 35 seconds.

Diagnosed with autism, Max serves as an inspiration for many people who are on the spectrum, as well as many who aren’t.

Max’s parents, Schawn and Miki, said that cubing has been “a good therapy” for Max.

“There was a time when Max couldn’t even open water bottles, but he showed interest in solving Rubik’s Cubes,” they said.

Max has come a long way since then, and he’s now an official ambassador for Rubik’s.

He has become a prominent figure in the cubing community, and over the years he has formed a close friendship with fellow speedcubing legend Feliks Zemdegs. The pair featured in the 2020 Netflix documentary The Speed Cubers.

Following his motto of “don’t think, just solve,” it’s only a matter of time before Max sets his next world record, and we can’t wait to see it.

Guinness World Records shatters Hilda Bassey’s 100hrs achievement, slash record to 93hrs over calculation error

Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, a few years ago developed a burning ambition to become the world’s longest-cooking record holder.

She set out to cook for 100 hours non-stop, hoping to beat the previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Hilda Baci, who officially goes by the name Hilda Effiong Bassey, seemed to have achieved her goal, according to the Guinness World Record on its website. However, she was in for a rude shock.

The Guinness World Record announced today that Hilda Baci “has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.”

That means about seven hours of her cooking were chopped off and according to the Guinness World Record, this is because “she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.”

Despite this setback, Hilda Baci has still been awarded the record for world’s longest cooking marathon.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef started on Thursday 11 May and finished on Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

Hilda had to follow several rules during her record-breaking cook-a-thon:

She had to prepare or cook at least two items at any time and she was allowed to have a sous-chef to help her with prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but she had to do all the cooking herself.

One of the most important rules of food-related record attempts is that all items must be eaten after cooking.

To this end, Hilda invited anyone from the Nigerian public to come and enjoy her freshly made meals. All leftover food was given to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation.
