NACSA to arrest illegal firearms holders after Jan 30

Individuals found in possession of an unregistered or illicit firearm after January 30, 2026, will be arrested and prosecuted by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA).

This information comes at a time when NACSA is concluding its Gun Amnesty Programme, which started on December 1, 2025.

The programme, which aims to address the persistent gun-related violence across the country, was expected to end on January 16 but has been extended to January 30, 2026 to allow more time for voluntary surrender of unregistered firearms.

The Commission added, “After 30th January, 2026, security agencies will intensify enforcement operations, and any person found in possession of an unregistered or illicit firearm will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law”.

Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Region is leading in the number of firearms retrieved under the Gun Amnesty Programme. Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr Adam Bonaa, disclosed this information in an engagement with the National Chief Imam on Friday, December 26.

He noted, “The Greater Accra Region is one of the areas where most of the weapons we have collected are coming from. It is currently leading in terms of arms surrendered under the amnesty programme, with the support of the security commanders”.

Dr Adam Bonaa’s meeting with the Chief Imam forms part of efforts to create awareness of the ongoing programme within the Muslim community. The illegal possession of small arms remains a pressing challenge in the country.

In September this year, Ghana strengthened its global stance against nuclear weapons. Ghana joined sixty-nine (69) other nations in efforts to reduce and ultimately eradicate dangerous weapons, particularly atomic bombs, from the world.

The sixty-nine (69) countries that have ratified the treaty are Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chile, Colombia, Comoros, Congo, Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Indonesia, Ireland, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Lesotho, Liberia, Liechtenstein, and Madagascar.

The others include Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Malta, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Niue, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Seychelles, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the State of Palestine, Sudan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Announcing the development on Saturday, September 27, via the X platform, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that Ghana has officially ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

The move, according to the Minister, reflects Ghana’s commitment to supporting global peace and a stable security for the world. The Minister further applauded both the Cabinet and Parliament for their unanimous approval of the treaty.

He also recalled how Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was a strong advocate of disarmament in 1962, adding that the late President would be proud of this groundbreaking step.

“Yesterday, Ghana boldly demonstrated to the world that we shall be a Nuclear-Weapon-Free State by depositing our instrument of ratification on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at the UN. I commend the Ghanaian Cabinet and Parliament for the unanimous ratification.

As I indicated in my UN address, Ghana has been consistent across all political parties in advocating for total disarmament and creating a new world without nuclear weapons.

“Ghana’s Founder, Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, who convened the 1962 World Without the Bomb conference in Accra, would be absolutely proud of this moment. It was an honour to meet with the inspiring Melissa Parke and Seth Shelden of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). ICAN won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for their groundbreaking work to attain a world without nuclear weapons. We shall triumph and end global impunity,” he wrote.

Ghana’s final ratification of the TPNW was signed in 2017 and approved by Parliament in July 2025. The country has been instrumental in promoting Africa’s stance as a nuclear-free continent.

In 2025, U.S. Army Major Kojo Owusu Dartey was sentenced to 70 months in prison and three years of supervised release for smuggling firearms to Ghana and making false statements to federal authorities.

The 42-year-old, based at Fort Liberty, was found guilty by a jury on April 23, 2024, on charges including conspiracy, illegal firearm dealing, false declarations in court, and exporting firearms without a license.

According to court records and trial evidence, Dartey orchestrated a firearms smuggling operation by purchasing seven firearms in North Carolina and instructing a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to buy three more and send them to him.

He then concealed the weapons inside blue barrels filled with rice and household goods before working with an Army Chief Warrant Officer to smuggle them through the Port of Baltimore, Maryland.

The barrels were shipped to the Port of Tema, Ghana, where Ghanaian authorities later seized them and alerted the DEA attaché in Ghana and the ATF Baltimore Field Division.

Dartey was also linked to a 16-defendant marriage fraud scheme involving soldiers at Fort Liberty and foreign nationals from Ghana. He provided information that led to its prosecution but later lied to federal law enforcement and under oath in court about his relationship with a defense witness during the U.S. v. Agyapong trial between June 28 and July 2, 2021.

His sentencing was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Daniel Bubar, following an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), and the Department of Commerce’s Office of Export Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel J. Diaz prosecuted the case.

In Ghana, institutions such as the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) have called on the judiciary to impose stricter punishments on individuals found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

In 2024, NACSA reported one million illicit pump-action guns, AK-47s, pistols, and locally manufactured arms in circulation in Ghana. The Commission described these figures as a threat to national security.

The Head of the National Arms Marking Programme at the time, Mr. Frank Boateng Asumani, stated: “Currently, we have 2.3 million small and light weapons in circulation, out of which 1.2 million are legally registered and the remaining 1.1 million cannot be accounted for.”

Speaking to The Independent Ghana, the Deputy Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (PPME) at NACSA, Gyebi Asante, stressed the urgent need to review existing laws governing firearms possession to better counter current security challenges.

“We are advocating for the law to be reviewed to suit the current situation and also be able to align with our current dispensation. It is something we have taken steps to do. Already, we have a proposed Bill, the National Arms Bill, at the Ministry of Interior to look at the document and endorse it.

“For example, the penal sanction, when you have a law that regulates the possession of arms that can kill, you must have a strong penal sanction that can deter people from going behind the law to buy these weapons, so the law as it is now is not deterrent enough,” he added.

He emphasized that the current penal sanctions are insufficient to deter illegal arms possession. According to him, the existing law stipulates a maximum jail term of five years or a fine of up to 1,000 penalty units, equating to 12,000 Ghana cedis.

He added that there is no minimum penalty established, allowing judges to exercise discretion in sentencing. This loophole, he indicated, has led to situations where individuals found guilty of illegal gun possession could potentially pay as little as 100 Ghana cedis or serve a mere two weeks in jail.

“For example, it says that you can be jailed for not more than five years and you can also be fined for not more than 1,000 penalty units. A penalty unit is 12 Ghana cedis, which makes it 12,000 Ghana cedis, not beyond, but it doesn’t give a minimum.

“If you are arrested for illegally possessing a gun, the judge uses his discretion and he can decide that go and pay 100 cedis and if you don’t pay, you will go to jail for two weeks because the law does not give you any minimum requirement. We see that as a serious challenge and a gap in the law that must be addressed,” he added.

Mr. Asante revealed that the Commission has submitted to the Ministry of Interior a proposal to amend the current Arms and Ammunition (Amendment) Act, 1972 (Act 604).

The National Arms Bill aims to close existing gaps in the law, ultimately working towards a safer environment for all Ghanaians. Additionally, he emphasized the urgent need for the bill to be enacted into law to ensure effective control and regulation of small arms and light weapons (SALW).

Established by an Act of Parliament in 2007, NACSA’s mandate includes regulating the possession and control of small arms and light weapons, with a particular focus on curbing illegal production, trade, transfer, and cross-border movement of such weapons that contribute to crime and insecurity.,

Greater Accra leads in firearms surrendered under NACSA’s Gun Amnesty Programme

The Greater Accra Region is leading in the number of firearms retrieved under the Gun Amnesty Programme led by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapoms (NACSA).

Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr Adam Bonaa disclosed this information in an engagement with the National Chief Imam on Friday, December 26.

He noted,”The Greater Accra Region is one of the areas where most of the weapons we have collected are coming from. It is currently leading in terms of arms surrendered under the amnesty programme, with the support of the security commanders”.

Dr Adam Bonaa’s meeting with the Chief Imam forms part of efforts to create awareness of the ongoing program to the Muslim community.

The gun amnesty program is a window of grace. It offers every law-abiding Ghanaian who holds an unregistered or illicit firearm the opportunity to surrender it without fear of interrogation, arrest, or prosecution.

From the 1st of December 2025 to the 15th of January 2026, any person who voluntarily hands over such weapons at designated collection points will be commended, not condemned. You will be recognised as a patriot contributing to the peace and safety of our nation”, the Interior Minister said during an engagement with the media.

However, individuals who fail to surrender any illegal weapon in their possession, the Asawase Member of Parliament noted, will be treated as criminals and be made to face the full course of the law.

“But let me be clear: when this amnesty period ends, the law will take its full course. The Ghana Police Service and all security agencies will intensify operations to recover illicit arms. Those who refuse this generous offer will be treated as criminals, and the consequences will be firm and uncompromising”, the Minister added, stressing that the effort is essential to creating a safer and more secure environment for all Ghanaians.

The Minister also announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities within the amnesty period, a measure intended to curb celebratory gunfire, prevent injuries, and save lives in communities nationwide.

He also noted that, “We cannot continue to bury our loved ones while the tools of violence remain unchecked. The statistics are not looking good at all”.

Also, on the gun, Minister Muntaka revealed during a session with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament in Accra, on Tuesday, 30 September, in response to questions on firearm regulation and monitoring, announced that gun registration, which is currently done manually, will be digitalised to make it easily accessible and less daunting for citizens.

In a detailed explanation, he broke down what measures the Ministry intends to put in place.

He said, “So this is what is going to happen: You register, and we have you in the registry. In the registry, we have your contact number and all your details. So, three months before expiry, we will send you a notification that your license will expire on 31st December. And you no longer need to walk to any CID office where you have to join a queue to pay for the renewal. Because the databases will be talking to each other, and over the one year, we will have recorded no criminal activities about the person we granted the license to hold the firearm, you will be able to pay through your MoMo or using your bank details. You can renew it immediately without any struggle.

“Many people even tend to forget that the time has come for them to renew it. Maybe along the line, they just see the gun and say, “Hey, when was the last time I renewed this?” So we want to digitalise this, and by the grace of God, when we are done, by the close of the year, worst case, by the close of the year, all these things will be digitalised. It will give people the opportunity to do the renewal online without necessarily having to walk to the Police Headquarters.

However, Mr Muntaka added that gun owners flagged for criminal activity during the renewal period will not be allowed to complete the process online.

“The only thing is that if there’s a criminal record over the period when you want to renew, it may deny you, and that may require that you come physically. But it also helps us. Even if you change address; because we are going to link it to your Ghana Card, we will be able to tell that Maka has a gun, has not renewed it over this period, and has changed his address from Asar to Bima. We will be able to track him and either retrieve the gun from him or get him to renew his license”, he continued.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Ghana joined sixty-nine (69) other nations in efforts to reduce and ultimately eradicate dangerous weapons, particularly nuclear bombs, from the world.

A/R: Shootout between police and suspected armed robbers kills three at Jacobu

A shootout incident between the police and a five-gang suspected armed robbers have resulted in the death of three individuals.

The deceased; Seidu Issah, 29; Musah Yakubu, 35; and Yahaya Munkaila, also known as Tijani, 25 were pronounced dead on arrival after they were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. Meanwhile, the police is manhunting the other two who managed to flee the scene.

Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital morgue pending autopsy.

Two pump-action shotguns loaded with six rounds of ammunition each, an unmarked pistol, a sack containing 25 live cartridges, and six spent shells were retrieved from the scene included as part of the operation.

The police intelligence-led operation to foil a planned robbery along the Anwiankwanta-Obuasi road in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, December, 24 turned chaotic when the suspected robbers reportedly opened fire on the officers.

The five-gang have been identified as wanted persons for their involvement in multiple robbery and homicide cases in parts of the region, including, Manso, Jacobu, and the Anwiankwanta enclave.

Ashanti Region has in recent times recorded attacks on police by armed robbers. In October, two suspected criminals lost their lives after a shootout incident with the police.

The shootout was instigated after the police invaded the hideout of robbers in search of one wanted suspect, Osman Majid Abdul Sadik, alias Cross, who is known for several robberies and killings in the Mankranso area.

The incident was reported barely two weeks after eight police officers sustained injuries following a gunfire exchange between masked men at Sampa in the Bono Region on Sunday afternoon, October 5.

A police officer was earlier reported to have lost his life as a result of the incident. The clash also left a police vehicle destroyed, caused hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis in commercial losses, and destroyed essential goods.

Tensions between rival groups in the township are believed to have led to the incident. An armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region left an Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), Rafiq Mohammed, dead, and another officer, AICOII Oppong Daniel, injured.

AICOII Oppong Daniel was reported to be receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the incident.

While details of the attack remain unclear, reports suggest that the incident took place at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3. However, AK-47 shell casings used by the attackers during the operation have been retrieved by the joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS.

In recent years, the Police Service has made significant progress in tackling robberies and prosecuting offenders. In September, the Ghana Police Service arrested ten individuals and shot three others dead in its efforts to crack down on a series of violent rural bank robberies across the country. Authorities allege that the 15-member gang has been behind a series of robberies in the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions.

On Sunday, September 14, at 3:30 am, the ring invaded the Saint Martin’s De Porres Cooperative Credit Union with pump-action guns and AK-47 rifles. They escaped the premises with cash after holding the security guard and his wife hostage.

Briefing the media on Wednesday, September 24, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the police recovered a large cache of weapons, vehicles, and valuables following the operation.

One of their AK-47 rifles has been traced to one Corporal Francis Adu Yaw of the Tepa District. The said police officer was killed on November 29, 2024, by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Goaso highway.

The items seized included three AK-47 assault rifles; one single-barrel gun with one AAA round; seven pump-action guns with 96 rounds of AAA ammunition; three Bruni pistols with 40 rounds of ammunition; one M&P pistol with four rounds of ammunition; cash amounting to GH¢18,845, $104, 190 Liberian dollars, ₦5,800, and CFA 31,000; a quantity of assorted Ghanaian coins; six vehicles; four motorbikes; and several mobile phones and pieces of jewellery.

According to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the gang’s operations were successfully undercovered after six months of sustained intelligence operations.“Through sustained intelligence operations, the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled the notorious criminal syndicate who have been behind several robberies in various regions of the country,” she stated.

In August this year, Service announced the retrieval of items used by a gang of armed men during a gold shop robbery at Mpohor in the Western Region over the weekend.

Weapons, ammunition, clothing, and other materials were among the exhibits. According to a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 19, the police stated that the retrieved items would aid in the ongoing investigation into the case.

On Sunday, August 17, one person was arrested in connection with the robbery. The police explained that the retrieval was made possible after officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

Currently, the police are on a manhunt for eight others allegedly involved in the heist. They added that two men who were standing by the vehicle fled upon seeing the approaching patrol team.

According to the police, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, and other materials believed to have been used during the robbery.

“The Ghana Police Service, in its ongoing investigation into the Mpohor gold shop robbery case, has recovered weapons, ammunition, clothing items and some other exhibits linked to the case. As part of intensified anti-robbery patrols, officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

“Two men who were standing by the vehicle fled into the bush upon seeing the approaching police patrol team. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, additional packets of ammunition, cowrie shells, a Huawei smartphone, identity documents, and some clothing items.

“A careful examination of the recovered exhibits against the CCTV footage of the Mpohor robbery revealed a striking resemblance between the clothing items (hooded tops) and the Wellington boots that were used during the robbery. The recovery of these items marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation and manhunt for the suspects,” parts of the statement read.

On July 30, a shootout between suspected armed robbers and police officers at Atebubu in the Bono East Region led to the death of two suspects.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the patrol team encountered a robbery attack on commuters along the Atebubu Highway. The suspects opened fire on the officers upon sighting them. Those struck during the exchange were rushed to a hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival, while others escaped into nearby bushes.

A search of the scene led to the retrieval of a shotgun loaded with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete. Intensive efforts are still underway to apprehend the fugitives, police confirmed.

On July 15, an intelligence-led operation by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) foiled a robbery attempt by five armed men targeting a foreign national at Cantonments. Police received credible intelligence that the men were lodging at a hotel in Labadi.

While en route in a Toyota Yaris vehicle, the suspects opened fire on a police team after detecting surveillance. An officer sustained gunshot wounds, and in the ensuing shootout, two suspects died after being rushed to the Ghana Police Hospital.

The injured officer, who suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and legs, has been hospitalized and is responding to treatment. Police retrieved two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, live cartridges, three mobile phones, talismans, and other items from the scene.

Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act states that a person who commits robbery commits a first-degree felony. Per Section 150, “a person who steals a thing commits robbery (a) if in, and for the purpose of stealing the thing, that person uses force or causes harm to any other person, or (b) if that person uses a threat or criminal assault or harm to any other person, with intent to prevent or overcome the resistance of the other person to the stealing of the thing.”

Section 124 of the Criminal Offenses Act also indicates that a person who steals commits a second-degree felony. Where the court that finds a person guilty of stealing is satisfied that, on not less than two previous occasions, the accused was found guilty of stealing, the court shall order that the whole or a part of the term of imprisonment imposed shall be spent in productive hard labour.

A person subjected to such an order is disqualified from election to Parliament or a District Assembly within the meaning of the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), for up to five years. Productive hard labour refers to labour in a state farm, state factory, or any other public co-operative or collective enterprise specified by the Minister.

Police efforts in combating robberyIn July, the Police secured a conviction in a four-year-old armed robbery case that occurred in Atonsu, Kuwait, Kumasi. The Kumasi Circuit Court sentenced two individuals to 15 years imprisonment for their role in the violent incident. The convicts, Abass Kasim (26) and Daniel Morro, alias “China” (25), were part of a gang of five that attacked a resident in Atonsu Kuwait on July 31, 2021, around 2:30 a.m.

The gang, wielding a pistol and cutlasses, shot the victim in the abdomen, inflicted multiple cutlass wounds, and robbed him of valuables including an iPhone 11 worth GHS 5,500, a Samsung phone worth GHS 500, two Apple Watches valued at GHS 3,000, two ladies’ handbags, jewelry, $600, and an unspecified amount of Ghana cedis.

Following investigations, Abass Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021. During interrogation, he confessed and led police to arrest Daniel Morro. A pistol used in the attack was later retrieved.

On August 19, 2021, the suspects were arraigned before Kumasi Circuit Court 4 and remanded into custody after pleading not guilty. They reappeared on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, when they were convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each on charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, unlawful entry, abetment of crime, and possession of firearms without authority.

The sentences are to run concurrently. They have since been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi. Meanwhile, three accomplices remain at large.

The police also reported another success after an armed robber, Paul Avortide, was sentenced to 19 years with hard labour for robbery. The 25-year-old, on May 21 at about 4:00 a.m., attacked a pregnant Nigerian woman, Ogechi Chidiebere, at Tsikpota near New Housing, Ho.

Armed with a machete, he robbed her of GHS 3,000 and a Tecno Spark 30c phone valued at GHS 2,500 as she made her way to antenatal care.

On June 19, police arrested Harmony Nbonu at Ho Main Market with the stolen phone. He confessed that Avortide had sold it to him for GHS 850. A coordinated operation led to Avortide’s arrest at Matse, a suburb of Ho, as he attempted to flee.

After investigations, Avortide was charged with robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, while Nbonu was charged with Dishonestly Receiving under Section 146. They were arraigned before Ho Circuit Court on Tuesday, July 1. Avortide pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 19 years in prison, while Nbonu was acquitted and discharged.

Meanwhile, three individuals suspected in a robbery at Nyanikrom near Shama Junction on Wednesday, July 9, were apprehended. They are Francis Mensah, alias Francis Kwaw (34), Ebenezer Cofie (32), and Samuel Bentum (35). The Western Regional Police Command arrested them following targeted surveillance based on credible intelligence.

Police revealed that the suspects, armed with insider information, planned to rob company officials returning from a bank in Takoradi with salary funds. On the said day, the suspects ambushed the company vehicle near Unique School Junction at Nyanikrom. They broke the vehicle’s window and made away with the cash. A swift police response led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of GHS 149,500.

The suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations. However, the company’s driver, Maxwell Kofi Yeboah, alleged to have conspired with them, is at large and being pursued.

“The Western Regional Police Command assures the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all perpetrators to justice,” the police said.

Despite these successes, the Police Service continues to suffer casualties in its fight against armed robbery. Several officers have lost their lives while on duty, though the exact number remains unclear.

One such incident occurred in September 2024, when an officer was ambushed and killed by armed robbers at Kwame Peprakrom in the Central Region. In response, the government introduced a GHS 50,000 insurance scheme for officers who lose their lives while on duty.Meanwhile, the Police has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring security, law, and order across the country.

What the law says about robbery and stealing

Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act states that a person who commits robbery commits a first-degree felony. Per Section 150, “a person who steals a thing commits robbery (a) if in, and for the purpose of stealing the thing, that person uses force or causes harm to any other person, or (b) if that person uses a threat or criminal assault or harm to any other person, with intent to prevent or overcome the resistance of the other person to the stealing of the thing.”

Section 124 of the Criminal Offences Act also indicates that a person who steals commits a second-degree felony.

    Police efforts in combating robbery
In July, the Police secured a conviction in a four-year-old armed robbery case that occurred in Atonsu, Kuwait, Kumasi.

In response, the government introduced a GHS 50,000 insurance scheme for officers who lose their lives while on duty.

  • Give stricter punishments for unlicensed arm bearers Small Arms Commission tells Court

Give stricter punishments for unlicensed arm bearers Small Arms Commission tells Court

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), has called for the judiciary to impose stricter punishments on individuals found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

Speaking to The Independent Ghana, the Deputy Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (PPME) at NACSA, Gyebi Asante, highlighted the urgent need to review existing laws governing firearms possession to better align with current security challenges.

“We are advocating for the law to be reviewed to suit the current situation and also be able to align with our current dispensation. It is something we have taken steps to do. Already we have a proposed Bill, National Arms Bill at the Ministry of Interior to look at the document and endorse it. For example the penal sanction, when you have a law that regulates the possession of arms that can kill, you must have a strong penal sanction that can deter people from going behind the law to buy these weapons so the law as it is now is not deterrent enough,” he added.

“For example it says that you can be jailed for not more than 5 years and you can also be fined for not more than 1,000 penalty units. A penalty unit is 12 is 12 Ghana Cedis that makes it 12,000 Ghana Cedis not beyond but it doesn’t give a minimum. If you are arrested for illegally possessing a gun, the judge uses his discretion and he can decide that go and pay 100GH and if you don’t pay you will go to jail for two weeks because the law does not give you any minimum requirement. We see that as a serious challenge and a gap in the law that must be addressed,”he added.

Mr Asante revealed that the Commission has laid before the Ministry of Interior a proposed, to amend the current Arms and Ammunition (Amendment) Act, 1972 (Act 604).

The National Arms Bill aims to close the existing gaps in the law, ultimately working towards a safer environment for all Ghanaians.

Additionally, he emphasized the urgent need for the bill to be enacted into law to ensure effective control and regulation of small arms and light weapons (SALW).

Established by an Act of Parliament in 2007, NACSA’s mandate includes regulating the possession and control of small arms and light weapons, with a particular focus on curbing illegal production, trade, transfer, and cross-border movement of such weapons that contribute to crime and insecurity.

  • Illegal miners invade Northern Ashanti Mines, staff sustain gunshot injuries

Illegal miners invade Northern Ashanti Mines, staff sustain gunshot injuries

Northern Ashanti Mines Co. Ltd has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing assaults by armed illegal miners on its concession.

The company, a legally registered and licensed mining operation situated in Konongo Odumase, Asante Akyem Central Municipality, Ashanti Region, reported that its site was once again invaded by illegal miners on Monday, September 2, 2024.

The intruders were reportedly armed with stones, machetes, clubs, firearms, bows, arrows, and other dangerous weapons.

In an official statement, the mining company recounted that the violent invasion, which was marked by the firing of live ammunition, resulted in two employees sustaining severe gunshot wounds.

Additionally, the attack caused extensive damage, including the destruction of three vehicles, significant harm to buildings and key infrastructure, and the looting of ore valued in the millions of dollars.

The mine’s management reported that they have conducted multiple meetings with the Municipal Security Council, led by the MCE for Asante Akyem Central, to address the ongoing attacks. The most recent meeting focused on an earlier assault that took place less than three months ago.

In response to the repeated attacks, the mining company has appealed to the traditional authority, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ashanti Regional Minister to enhance security measures.

“We are calling on our respected Traditional Authority, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources; the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Defense; the Ashanti Regional Minister and all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies clothed with the mandate to offer us adequate guarantees and security; to promptly come to the aid of Northern Ashanti Mines.”

    For Immediate release to all media houses;

Armed Attack on Northern Ashanti Mines Concession leaves two badly injured, with gold ore worth millions looted.

Management of Northern Ashanti Mines Co. Ltd. a duly registered and licensed mining company at Konongo Odumase, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has noted with deep concern the incessant attacks of armed illegal miners; on its concession.

On Monday 2nd September, 2024; these bracing bandits invaded our concession for the umpteenth time wielding stones, machetes, clubs, cajoles, firearms, bows and arrows and other offensive objects.

This horrific raid which occurred amidst the firing of live ammunition resulted in two of our staff sustaining life-threatening gunshot wounds; the destruction of three vehicles; damage to our buildings and key installations and the looting of ore amounting to several millions of dollars.

Management of the mine has held several meetings with the Municipal Security Council headed by the MCE for Asante Akyim Central; the latest of which concerned another attack that the mine suffered less than three months ago.

Northern Ashanti Mines finds these recurrent attacks inimical to the quest of the government to promote a sustainable legal and properly regulated mining industry where investors are offered a favourable environment to contribute to the growth of the nation.

We are fully aware of the threats of terrorism in the sub-region and the tendency of such radical elements to hide behind community thugs to raid mines to finance their onslaught and cause further instability in an already volatile region where Ghana faces a significant threat.

It is also crucial to note that allowing such disturbing clashes to happen within an electioneering year where the peace, security and stability of the nation is a prime concern; can have dire consequences, especially for miscreants looking for the slight flickers of tension to exploit.

Intelligence picked up by management suggests that two notorious illegal mining kingpins in the community are behind the provision of arms and the mobilization of these thugs to continue reigning terror on the concessions of Northern Ashanti Mines.

The mine has demonstrated utmost corporate responsiveness to all our stakeholders and finds it unfortunate that such impunity festers without comprehensive responses from the state to protect the mutual interests of our mines.

A cursory trend analysis shows an increasing risk of armed confrontations which we fear could overwhelm security services and pose further threats to the precious lives of our staff and the continuous operations of the mine.

We are calling on our respected Traditional Authority, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources; the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Defense; the Ashanti Regional Minister and all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies clothed with the mandate to offer us adequate guarantees and security; to promptly come to the aid of Northern Ashanti Mines.

As a company which has not reneged on our taxes, royalties and other obligations to the community and the state, Management is willing and ready to cooperate with all agencies and stakeholders to restore lasting peace and order in Konongo Odumase as we guard jealously our obligations to Ghana, the lives of our staff and the property of the mines.

  • I nearly used my gun when I learned I was not the biological father to my children – Odartey Lamptey

Ghanaian award-winning ex-footballer, Odartey Lamptey, has revealed that he nearly resorted to using his gun after discovering that the three children he had raised were not biologically his.

However, patience and divine intervention prevented him from making a decision that could have resulted in imprisonment.

“When the issue happened I wanted to use my gun. It was in my Tundra but I decided I would not do anything to jeopardize my life so I did not use it. I was broken but I was very patient about it and that has led me to where I am today. I believe it was God who spoke to me and so I decided not to use my gun. It used to be in my Tundra but I decided not to touch the gun again.

I’ve my own children and family now and people even come to me to learn from how I have been able to emotionally handle it. My ordeal gave men awareness and the confidence to check the parternity of their children. Some have not been able to handle the shock but some have been able to,” he said while speaking to Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

Regarding his relationship with the children, Mr Lamptey mentioned that his lawyers advised him to stay away, leading to no contact with them since the legal proceedings began.

Nonetheless, he bears no ill will towards them, recognizing that they were not at fault for the situation.

He expressed his readiness to support them if needed.

  • They pointed guns at my head and warned me never to speak about Akufo-Addo again – Bongo Idea

They pointed guns at my head and warned me never to speak about Akufo-Addo again – Bongo Idea

A serial troll on social media, Albert Nat Hyde, also known as Bongo Ideas, has shared details about a recent incident involving alleged abduction and mistreatment.

Weeks ago, Bongo Ideas found himself at the center of attention when reports surfaced of his arrest by state security agents. However, both the police and national security later issued statements denying his custody.

Shortly after, Bongo Ideas resurfaced, reportedly in a deteriorated state, after being returned home.

In his first interview since the incident, he spoke with German broadcaster DW Africa about his ordeal, attributing it to individuals claiming to be police officers.

According to Bongo Ideas, the events unfolded in the early hours of March 14, 2024, when individuals posing as law enforcement officers forcibly entered his room, threatened him with firearms, and physically assaulted him.

“On 14th March 2024, around 3 am, some men masquerading as policemen entered my room and dragged me out. I was threatened to be killed where pistols were pointed to my head and I was told to say my last prayers.

“They beat me up and all and they warned me never to speak about the president,” he told DW News.

He recounted being coerced into silence regarding the president under threat of death.

The news of Bongo Ideas’ treatment sparked mixed reactions on social media.

While some attributed the ordeal to his own actions, the majority expressed concern over the use of intimidation tactics against a citizen.

Supporters of Bongo Ideas called for democratic means to address any grievances rather than resorting to clandestine methods.

The incident has reignited discussions about freedom of expression and the rule of law in Ghana, drawing attention to the delicate balance between protecting citizens’ rights and maintaining social order.

  • Met Police Chief calls for increased legal protection for officers after gun revolt

Met Police Chief calls for increased legal protection for officers after gun revolt

The leader of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Mark Rowley, wants officers to have more legal protection. This is because armed police officers have rebelled, and now there is a possibility that the army might take their place.

Soldiers are ready to help the police because over 100 police officers stopped carrying guns after one of their colleagues was charged with murder.

The head of the police force is happy about a review of the situation done by the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman. In a letter to her, the commissioner said, “Let the police do their job. ”

Over 100 officers have given permission to carry guns, leading Scotland Yard to ask the military for help.

A problem arose when a police officer, who remains unidentified, was accused of murder for shooting and killing Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old who was not armed. This incident occurred in September of last year in Streatham Hill, located in south London.

Mrs Braverman said she wanted to check that armed officers feel sure about doing their job.
Sir Mark has recommended making some changes to how self-defense is understood in cases where the police have done something wrong. He also suggested using a higher standard of proof in investigations into unlawful killings and making it easier for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to start an investigation.

He stated in the letter: ‘In the UK, we are proud to enforce laws with the agreement of the public, following the principles of responsibility, openness, and unbiased examination. ‘

We need a system that both officers and communities trust and believe in.

‘When bad things happen, people want us to be held to very high standards. ’

I have clearly stated this in every aspect of police work, and the use of force should be no different.

The system that determines if officers did something wrong should be honest and fair. Decisions should be made quickly and fairly, without any fear or special treatment.

We have to look at how the Independent Office for Police Conduct and the Crown Prosecution Service are held accountable. We should review their policies and practices, especially when it comes to deciding whether to investigate police actions in using force and being involved in chases.

The announcement of the review today is something we are happy about.

I have been talking to the public lately about the importance of letting the police do their job.

‘We are fully dedicated to bringing about change in the Met and we are making good progress, but this progress is being challenged by a system that is not designed to support officers in their success. ’

Sir Mark is asking for rules about how long investigations by the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) and CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) should take. He wants to make sure that officers who are being investigated don’t suffer too much.

He also said that more specific details about incidents should be shared with the public to make sure people trust the police.

The high-ranking officer said that the firearms officers are worried that even if they follow the tactics and training they have been given, they will have to deal with long and complicated legal processes for many years. This will affect their own well-being and also that of their family.

Previous reviews were announced, but they did not bring about any change.

‘Choosing to carry a gun is optional. ‘ We depend on brave officers who are ready to face danger every day to keep us safe from dangerous criminals, like terrorists.

Police officers must have adequate legal protection so that they can effectively perform their duties and ensure public safety. They also need to feel confident that this protection will be consistently applied without any bias or fear.
Rishi Sunak supported the review conducted by the Home Secretary, explaining that armed police officers should have clear information about their legal powers.

The Prime Minister was talking to TV and radio staff members while visiting a community center in Hertfordshire. He said that our police officers who use guns have a really tough job.

They are making quick decisions that can save our lives, and we should be thankful and appreciate their bravery.

It is crucial for them to use these legal powers with clear understanding and complete sureness, particularly because they are dealing with deadly force.

That’s why the Home Secretary wants her department to review the guidance that the officers are following, to make sure it is strong and that both the officers and the public trust it.

‘Of course, I cannot make guesses about cases that are still happening, but that is exactly what we are doing. ’

The police have asked for help from the military to fight against terrorism, and the Ministry of Defence has agreed to provide that help if it is necessary.

This is a backup plan that would only be used in certain situations when there is no suitable police response available.

The military will not be used to do regular police work. We will continuously check if we still need the support.

The Ministry of Defence has agreed to help the Metropolitan Police with counter-terrorism efforts if they need it.

The Home Secretary said: ‘We rely on our courageous police officers with guns to keep us safe from the most dangerous and violent people in our society. ‘

They have to make very quick decisions in order to keep the public safe, even when they are under a lot of pressure.

They shouldn’t be afraid of facing legal consequences for doing their job. I fully support the officers who risk their lives to keep us safe, and I will do everything I can to help them.

A police officer from the Metropolitan Police went to court on Thursday because someone named Mr. Kaba died after getting shot through a car windshield.

The police officer who is accused of killing someone is given the name NX121 because a judge ordered that their true identity should not be revealed.

  • Gun store owner closes due to 50% increase in child shooting deaths

Gun store owner closes due to 50% increase in child shooting deaths

After several school shootings that resulted in the deaths of children, the owner of a gun store has made the decision to permanently close his doors.

The 43-year-old Jon Waldman had a successful business when he founded Georgia Ballistics in Duluth in 2021, but he closed it after two recent shootings involving children.

The first was a shooting in March at a Christian school in Nashville, which claimed the lives of three children and three adults. The second incident included a shooting on May 3 inside an Atlanta hospital, close to Waldman’s gun shop, which resulted in the death of a woman and the injury of four other people.

‘I’m not against the Second Amendment,’ Waldman, referring to the right to bear arms, told NBC News on Thursday.

‘But just with my conscience, I can’t sell it, because I don’t know who it’s going to affect and hurt.

‘That’s what eats at me. If it can happen, it’s only a matter of time until it does happen.’

Waldman’s decision comes as gunshot deaths among kids are found to have increased 50% from 2019 to 2021. The number of deaths increased from 1,732 to 2,590 in that time span, according to the Pew Research Center in April. That is the highest figure since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began counting such fatalities in 1999, the Daily Mail reported.

The shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville ‘really affected me’, Waldman said, and the one at the Atlanta hospital close to home was the ‘final’ straw.

‘Dude killed a woman from the CDC who only wanted to help others,’ he said. ‘So I just can’t.’

Waldman has already shuttered his business and plans to have all the firearms in stock cleared by June 15.

He was also disillusioned when a customer a month-and-a-half ago walked in wanting to buy 4,000 rounds.

‘If you had ordered 200 to 1,000 rounds, that’s fine. Anyone who shoots regularly, you’re going through a thousand rounds in a month,’ he said.

‘But when you order 4,000 rounds, the kind of stuff that goes through engine blocks, refrigerators and vests that police officers wear, I just can’t sell that.’

Waldman said he is not pushing for more restrictions on gun ownership, but rather advocating for gun safety.

Kris Brown, president of Brady: United Against Gun Violence, said that eight children are killed or hurt each day because gun owners are largely not required by law to safely store their weapons.

‘We hear every day about a child, sometimes as young as 3 or 4 years old, getting their hands on their parents’ gun,’ Brown told NBC News, ‘And accidentally shooting a loved one, or themselves.’

Police investigate alleged chieftaincy feud-related gunshots in Tamale

Police in the Northern Region are looking into an incident that resulted in gunshots in Yong Dakpemyili, an area in the Tamale Metropolis.

Sources in the community say there were gunshots in the town on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

They attributed the shooting incident to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between two brothers in the community.

The Assemblyman for the community, Abdul Wahab Dawuda confirmed the incident in a Citi News interview disclosing that some residents sustained injuries.

“There were some gunshots as a result of two brothers feuding over a chieftaincy title. One side was to perform some particular traditional activity and some people sustained some injuries, but there is currently calm in the community, but we don’t know what may happen next.”

Sources within the Northern Regional Police Command have revealed that, the police visited the community to restore calm and order, but no arrest has been made.

Despite the restoration of calm, residents are still living in fear and socioeconomic activities have slowed down significantly.

Both sides of the conflict have recorded deaths, injuries and the burning and destruction of properties running into several thousands of Ghana Cedis over the years.

After a two-day manhunt, Robert Louis Singletary, 24, reportedly turned himself in to police on Thursday night in Tampa.

The girl and her mother were treated in a hospital and released, but the father, according to the police, suffered critical injuries.

There are four first-degree attempted murder charges against Mr. Singletary.

He will also face charges from the police for two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felon in possession of a handgun.

The guy was previously known to the police for reportedly using a sledgehammer to abuse his girlfriend in December.

Police in Gaston County first received a 911 call at 19:44 local time on Tuesday (11:44 GMT) about the shooting.

A neighbour told reporters that the shooting had unfolded after a basketball rolled into the suspect’s yard.

Local residents told US media that when the children went to retrieve their ball, the suspect shouted at them. A father of one of the children went to the suspect’s door and remonstrated with him.

Police said the suspect went inside his home and came out with a gun before he fired indiscriminately at neighbours. The father who had argued with Mr Singletary was not injured by the gunfire, said neighbours.

The girl was treated for bullet fragments to her cheek. Her mother suffered a grazing bullet wound to the elbow. Her father was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The six-year-old has since spoken out about the shooting in an interview with a local ABC news channel.

“The bullet came back and the bullet went in my cheek,” said the girl, who is not being named by the BBC because of her age.

She added that her father remained in hospital in Charlotte. He is being treated for a punctured lung and liver problems after he was shot in the back.

Jonathan Robertson, who lives in the Gaston County neighbourhood, said: “They were playing basketball, and a ball rolled into his yard. They went to go and get it. It was just crazy.

“We just never expected it in a million years. We never expected anybody would break a gun out amongst all those kids.”

Gaston County Police Chief Stephen Zill said on Wednesday, “This sort of violence will not stand.”

The shooting is the latest in a string of gun violence incidents across the US involving young Americans who are reported to have mistakenly approached the wrong person or home:

    • In Texas, 18-year-old cheerleader Payton Washington was shot and seriously injured on Tuesday after she mistakenly tried to enter the wrong vehicle in a parking lot near Austin, Texas
    • In New York state, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed on Saturday after a friend drove their car down the wrong driveway
    • Last Thursday in Missouri, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot in the head and arm when he rang the doorbell at the wrong address.

Unknown gunman opens fire in Wa East, kills one

One person dead and several others injured after unknown man opened fire at the Wa East District of the Upper West Region.

According to reports, the residents effected an arrest of an unknown man, who was armed, in the area. But suddenly other armed men emerged from the bushes and opened fire on the gathered residents.

The incident is said to have occurred on Sunday, April 2.

The victims were all taken to the Wa Regional Hospital, where the survivors are responding to treatment.

Member of Parliament for Wa East Constituency Godfred Seidu Jasaw confirmed the incident but said information is “sketchy”.

Speaking on Midday News on 3FM on Wednesday, April 5, Mr Seidu Jasaw said relative calm has returned to the area, according to the Assembly member he talked to.

He said the matter has been reported to the Upper West Regional Police Command, which is now handling the case.

A manhunt to arrest the gunmen has been launched.

“The police in Wa municipality were alerted and they got on to the scene but the activities had taken place and the assailants had left.

“At the moment, my information is that the case has been reported to the regional police CID.”

There are suspicions that the case may be as a result of simmering chieftaincy and land disputes.

The MP also said some residents suspect the assailants may be galamseyers who are trying to assert their control of the area.

  • 6-year-old boy takes gun to school in Virginia

6-year-old boy takes gun to school in Virginia

The mother of a six-year-old son who carried a gun to his elementary school in Virginia has been detained; this is the most recent occurrence of its kind to occur in the US state.

On Thursday afternoon, workers at Little Creek Elementary School in Norfolk alerted the police, who were then given the firearm by the school.

Although nobody was hurt, a mother claims the youngster threatened to shoot her daughter in class.

Another six-year-old shot and injured his teacher in the state last month.

In the most recent incident, the boy’s mother was accused on Friday of enabling the boy’s misbehavior and giving him access to a loaded gun.

Another mother told a local news station that the boy had brought a loaded gun to school in his backpack and threatened to shoot her daughter during physical education class on Thursday. But the woman only found out about the threat from another parent.

Her daughter did not tell her because she thought she might get in trouble. The girl told the broadcaster that after coming home from school she went to her bedroom “and tried to play but couldn’t”.

The incident echoes the case of a six-year-old boy who brought a gun to class nearby in Newport News, Virginia, on 6 January with near-fatal consequences.

He shot and seriously injured his teacher, 25-year-old Abby Zwerner, who is now suing the district that runs Richneck Elementary School.

  • Farmer allegedly shot dead by police over Fulani menace

Farmer allegedly shot dead by police over Fulani menace

At his home in Maamekrobo, in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region, 54-year-old farmer Kwasi Ahoku is said to have been shot dead by police.

The incident occurred on Friday, February 3, 2023, around 6:30am.

It is alleged that the police are the cause of the death after firing several shots into the house of the deceased in an attempt to force him out for interrogation after a Fulani herdsman claimed that his cattle has been gunned down by a farmer suspected to be the deceased.

A resident who is the former Chairman of the Afram Plains Farmers Association, Mathew Afrani in an interview on Agoo FM Morning revealed that about fifteen bullets were fired at the deceased residence, leaving several gunshot marks on the wall of the house.

“After the gunshots, the police forced and broke into the room of the suspect and found him dead with gunshot wounds on his body in a pool of blood,” he said.

Speaking on the matter, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Kwahu Afram Plains South District Assembly, Evans Kyei Ntiri expressed his displeasure with the devastating incident which has occurred in his district.

He explained that he had a call from the District Police Commander who informed him of the incident.

He said, according to the Police, the deceased (Kwasi Ahoku) tried to face off with the policemen when the police got to his residence.

“He challenged the police that he is also in possession of a gun which escalated the tension and resulted in many warning shots released in the skies. As the police broke into the room, they saw the man dead lying beside his gun. We are still investigating the matter to know the actual root of the incident,” Mr Ntiri said.

Police say the matter is under investigation and will be receiving persons who are willing to help out with information on the said incident.

  • One arrested, others on the run after allegedly murdering police officer

Police in the Ashanti region is on a manhunt for some unscrupulous persons who allegedly murdered a police officer.

The deceased, whose name has been withheld, was attacked by a gang of armed robbers on November 25, 2022.

The attack is said to have occurred between Miminaso No. 2 and Nyamebekyere on the Ejura-Nkoranza road in the Ashanti region.

One person has so far been arrested in connection with the crime. The suspect, Salifu Adams, is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

In line with police standard operating procedure, the name of the deceased has been withheld until his family is formally notified of his demise.

Meanwhile, the suspect currently in the grip of the police will soon be arraigned to face justice.

This adds to the number of brutalities meted out against
police officers. Some police have lost their lives in the line of duty.

They are sometimes shot during a gun battle with these armed robbers.

These brutalities often undermine the work of the
service. Recently, an alarming trend that raised a lot of concern was the attacks on officers who were escorting bullion vans to their respective destinations.

In February of this year, there was an attack on a bullion van in the North Industrial area. Eyewitnesses said the officers escorting this vehicle narrowly escaped death.

Also in July this year, a young officer, aged 25, was reportedly
    killed while on duty.

He was escorting a bullion van that was transporting an undisclosed amount of money from Adedenkpo, a suburb of Jamestown in Accra, when a group of armed robbers attacked the van.

He, together with a hawker by name, Afua Badu, were
    pronounced dead at the spot.

Following these occurrences, there were incessant calls on
the Ghana Police Service to act on the matter.

Investigations revealed that two policemen were involved and
    masterminded the bullion van attacks.

They were subsequently killed during a gun battle with other officers.

This is in line with the Police’s standard operating procedure and in line with Ghanaian tradition.

The suspect is in custody and will be arraigned before the court to face justice.

The Police have also commenced a manhunt for the remaining suspects.

  • Club-goer used shooter’s gun to subdue him – Mayor

People at a gay club in the US state of Colorado have been hailed as heroes for subduing a gunman and preventing a deadly shooting from being even worse.

Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said one patron grabbed the attacker’s own gun and hit him with it during the shooting in Club Q on Saturday night.

Another club-goer reportedly helped to keep the gunman pinned down until police arrived.

The gunman killed five people and injured 25 more before being arrested.

The suspect, named by police as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, is now in police custody.

Mayor Suthers described the intervention of several club-goers as an “incredible act of heroism”.

“The call came into the police at 11:57pm. Police were on the scene by 12:00 – an amazingly quick response,” he told CNN.

“This incident was over by 12:02, and that’s largely because of the intervention of at least one, possibly two, very heroic individuals who subdued this guy… appears to have taken his handgun with them… and used it to disable him… not shoot but hit him with the gun, and disable him.

“But for that, as tragic as this incident is… it could have been much, much worse but for these heroic actors,” the mayor added.

Praise also came from the governor of Colarado, as well as the owner of the club – who noted “dozens and dozens of lives” had been saved.

Police are still trying to confirm exactly how many people were injured, adding that some people took themselves to hospital.

An investigation is now under way to determine whether the shooting was a hate crime, and if more than one person was involved.

Questions are also being asked about the suspect, who had previously come to police attention over a bomb threat in 2021.

According to a police report at the time, his mother had called emergency services saying “he was threatening to cause harm to her with a homemade bomb, multiple weapons, and ammunition”.

‘Why did this have to happen?’

A statement on the Club Q Facebook page said it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community”.

The venue was hosting a dance party at the time of the attack, and had planned to hold a performance event on Sunday evening to celebrate Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Joshua Thurman, 34, was in the club at the time of the shooting.

At first he thought the shots were part of the music, he told the Colorado Sun, but he later ran to take shelter in the club dressing room.

“When I came out there were bodies on the floor, shattered glass, broken cups, people crying,” he said.

“There was nothing keeping that man from coming in to kill us. Why did this have to happen? Why? Why did people have to lose their lives?”

Mr Thurman, who lives near the club, said it was an important part of the local gay community. He believes he knows one person who was killed.

Bartender Michael Anderson said he heard three bangs and saw the “outline of a gun” in the suspect’s hands.

“What I can’t stop thinking about is the visuals of the evening. Of the bodies, of the blood, of the broken glass, of the carnage in the wreckage and seeing a safe place turned into a war zone,” he told KKTV.

President Joe Biden said Americans “cannot and must not tolerate hate”.

“Places that are supposed to be safe spaces of acceptance and celebration should never be turned into places of terror and violence. Yet it happens far too often,” he said in a statement from the White House.

In 2016, 49 people were killed in a shooting at the Pulse gay club in Orlando, Florida. At the time it was the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

  • New York officer fatally shoots woman, injures another, turns gun on herself

Authorities in Rochester said an off-duty New York police officer fatally shot a woman and injured another victim before she killed herself. The deceased officer, identified as 29-year-old Tiffani Gatson, was with the Greece Police Department, NBC News reported. Authorities said the incident happened at a Rochester home on Monday night.

Gatson had been with the Greece Police Department for about 3 years. The department said she was off duty when the incident occurred. The other victim who survived the shooting was also a woman.

In a statement, Rochester police said they went to the residence after they received a “domestic related altercation” report. When officers arrived, they found Gatson, as well as the two other women with gunshot wounds, the state attorney general’s office said, adding that they were all outside the residence. The state attorney general’s office is mandated to investigate officer-related crimes.

The deceased victim, identified as 27-year-old Angely Solis, died at the scene. The other woman was also shot multiple times, but her injuries were said to be non-life-threatening. She was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.

Gatson, who turned the gun on herself in the aftermath of the incident, was also transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The attorney general’s office said the gun that was found at the crime scene was not the deceased officer’s service weapon.

And though WHEC reported that the women Gatson shot are related, police could not properly specify the relation the deceased officer had with the victims. In 2019, Gatson became the first African-American woman to be hired by the Greece Police Department.

“On behalf of the Town of Greece Police Department, I would like to express our collective sorrow and grief with respect to last night’s events in the City of Rochester,” Greece Police Chief Michael Wood said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, we have seen events of this nature occur all too frequently and struggle to find answers in the aftermath. The effects are far-reaching, from those who have lost loved ones to others throughout law enforcement organizations when a police officer commits such a horrible act, to our entire community.”

  • TSA agents recover handgun from inside raw chicken at Florida Airport

TSA agents at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport recovered a handgun stashed inside a raw chicken, The Washington Post reports.

The South Florida Transportation Security Administration agents discovered the raw chicken after a bag was pulled off the line. When the food item was more closely inspected, the agents discovered that a passenger had attempted to smuggle a firearm inside the chicken. It is unclear if the passenger was arrested.

“We hate to beak it to you here, but stuffing a firearm in your holiday bird for travel is just a baste of time. This idea wasn’t even half-baked; it was raw, greasy, and obviously unsupervised,” read a pun-filled post from the TSA, detailing the incident alongside photos of the chicken, as seen below. “The only roast happening here is this poor packing choice! Feather you like it or not, there are rules for traveling with guns and ammunition.”

According to TSA spokesperson R. Carter Langston, the incident happened on Sept 27 at the Florida airport’s checked baggage scanning facility in Terminal 4. Customs and Border Protection also responded to the find, because it involved an international passenger. The gun was unloaded, but travel restrictions dictate that unloaded firearms are only permitted in checked baggage if they’re contained in a locked, hard-sided case and declared ahead of traveling.

“Be sure you know what the gun laws are on each side of your trip or you may be heading to jail instead of to your family gathering,” added TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz, per a news release. “Guns may not be legal to transport even in checked baggage in some jurisdictions.”

Per the TSA, Florida’s Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa airports frequently top the list of most guns discovered by agents. This year alone, passengers have brought 700 guns to airport security in Florida, with many of them loaded. In 2021, the agency seized 5,972 firearms nationwide.

On Saturday, February 1 Ativor went for a watch night service in the company of her 15-year-old brother and one of her children at Pieso, which ended around 0530 hours the following day, he said.

Mr Ababio narrated that on their way home Ativor met Mensah wielding a single barrel gun, who questioned Ativor her mission that dawn, but before she could utter a word, he shot her in the left eye and also shot himself.

He said both bodies are sent to the Apinto government hospital for preservation and autopsy.

  • South Africa’s Jacob Zuma takes aim in rifle photo

South Africa’s embattled former President Jacob Zuma has found himself at the centre of fresh controversy after tweeting a photo of himself taking aim with a rifle.

Its meaning was unambiguous, and provocative.

A day after he had learned that a judge had issued an arrest warrant for him for failing to appear in court on corruption charges related to a multi-million dollar arms deal, Mr Zuma tweeted a photograph, on his official account, showing him aiming a rifle at an unknown target.

For a man who uses social media only rarely, and apparently carefully, the implication was clear to all South Africans.

It was a display of angry defiance against a judiciary and an “elite” which – Mr Zuma and his supporters have argued for years – is biased against him and involved in a dark conspiracy to undermine him and the “radical economic transformation” agenda that he unveiled towards the end of his corruption-riddled presidency.

    ‘Evil white establishment’

As the photograph provoked furious exchanges on social media, Mr Zuma’s family and his remaining allies in the governing African National Congress (ANC) have rallied to his defence.

His son Edward claimed the arrest warrant, issued by a judge but suspended until Mr Zuma’s next scheduled court appearance, had somehow been orchestrated by his political enemies.

Edward Zuma also said the rifle photo was two years old – a claim that hardly seemed relevant in the context in which it was used.

The head of the ANC’s Women’s League, Bathabile Dlamini, went further, speaking of “an invisible hand” orchestrating a campaign against the former president on behalf of “an evil white establishment”.

But many South Africans have reacted with contempt, and wry humour, to this latest incident, and see it as part of a decades-long attempt by Mr Zuma to avoid facing trial for alleged corruption by casting himself as a victim, floating frequent conspiracy theories and seeking endless court delays.

The arrest warrant issued on Tuesday followed Mr Zuma’s failure to show up in court for a fraud and corruption case that dates back to the 1990s.

The former president’s lawyer produced a doctor’s “sick note” to explain his client’s absence, but the judge questioned the credibility of the document and warned that Mr Zuma would face arrest if he did not appear for his next court appearance in May.

Mr Zuma has repeatedly insisted that the corruption charges against him are part of a sophisticated western plot against him.

He has also claimed, with no evidence produced, that those same, unnamed enemies have sought to poison him. It is almost impossible not to see the “rifle” picture in that context.

    ‘Rampant looting’

But while Mr Zuma still enjoys some limited support in the ANC, and more generally in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, his antics and conspiracy theories are increasingly seen by many as a sign of desperation.

South Africans have watched, for months, as senior officials have given damning evidence of corruption at a judge-led public inquiry into the Zuma presidency – an era which Mr Zuma’s successor, Cyril Ramaphosa, has since acknowledged was a period of rampant looting by state officials.

Mr Zuma’s behaviour is also seen here in the context of a “fight-back” by an allegedly corrupt faction within the ANC that lost control of the presidency and fears that, under a revived justice system, some of its most prominent members may soon join Mr Zuma in facing criminal charges.
