The Police officers present intervened and prevented further attack against Hawa Koomson.

Voting has been suspended at Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station due to the chaos.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted one of its officers who was caught on camera slapping a journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, during the rerun election at Ablekuma North.

In line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North.

It is unknown what exactly transpired between the reporter and a group of police officers that led to him being slapped.

The Police officer’s action has been condemned by all, including the mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who witnessed the unfortunate incident.

Engaging the media after the assault, Banahene Agyekum expressed distress and pain.

“Yes, (I won’t be able to continue work today) because my right eye is shaking and I don’t know what happened to my forehead. I have to go for a medical checkup,” he stated.

Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament and Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has urged supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to intensify their campaign efforts ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections.

In a passionate appeal, she encouraged party members to leave no stone unturned in their bid to secure a massive victory for the NPP.

Speaking to the media after filing her nomination to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections on Monday, September 9, 2024, Koomson called for a vigorous and comprehensive campaign that reaches every corner of the constituency.

She emphasized the importance of engaging voters at every level, stating, “We are going to campaign from house to house, kitchen to kitchen, bedroom to bedroom, toilet to toilet, market to market, community to community and campaign.”

Koomson expressed her gratitude to the NPP for endorsing her as their parliamentary candidate, remaining optimistic about the party’s prospects for victory. “I am hopeful I have met all the requirements. We are now going back to continue our campaign. Victory will surely be on our side, just like in the previous election,” she confidently stated.

Admitting that the 2024 elections would be challenging, the MP underscored that victory was possible if NPP members remained dedicated and focused. She urged supporters to avoid distractions and focus on promoting the party’s policies and message to ensure widespread support.

“We have policies and a message, and that is what we will sell to Ghanaians so they will vote for us,” Koomson added.

In addressing concerns about her leadership style, the Fisheries Minister apologized to any party members she may have offended and refuted claims of arrogance and disrespect. She called on all supporters to forgive any past grievances, urging them to come together for a unified campaign effort.

I received information about NDC’s plot to shoot my son – Hawa Koomson

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has made startling allegations against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that the party had orchestrated a plot to murder her son, Ato Koomson.

This shocking revelation was made during a Peace Talk event held at the Kasoa Odikro Palace, which aimed to mediate conflicts between the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency.

Ato Koomson was attacked and stabbed during a voter transfer exercise, sustaining a severe chest injury allegedly inflicted by an NDC ward organiser.

In her first public statement on the matter, Hawa Koomson revealed that she had received prior information about an intended assassination plot against her son, including details about the supposed assailant.

“I had received information about a plot to shoot my son,” Koomson disclosed.

She added that she had promptly informed the police about the threat, as she was aware of the identity of the person supposedly hired to carry out the attack.

However, she expressed deep frustration with the police’s handling of the case, stating that despite identifying the suspect to law enforcement before the incident, it later emerged that he was indeed the individual who attacked her son.

The Peace Talk event, attended by local and opinion leaders, sought to address tensions between the NDC and NPP in the area.

During the meeting, Stephen Ofosu Agyari, the NDC Constituency Chairman for Awutu Senya East, committed to working with party members to ensure a peaceful electoral process, highlighting a shared interest in maintaining harmony despite the recent allegations.

Western Region fishermen ‘cry’ over insufficient govt support during closed season

Fishermen in the Western Region have expressed frustration over inadequate support and a shortage of premix fuel ahead of the 2024 closed fishing season.

The announcement of the season by Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hawa Koomson, on July 1, 2024, in Dixcove, has triggered concerns among the fishing community.

According to the fishermen, the government’s provision of a bag of rice is insufficient to meet their needs during this period.

They are calling on the government to offer additional financial assistance to alleviate the hardships they will face during the ban.

“The one bag of rice they are bringing would not be enough for a family of four or more without money.

How are we going to cope with this?

So, the government should rather put in place proper financial support for each fisherman because the fishing industry is the major source of livelihood in their Ahanta Area,” one of them said on behalf of the rest.

Meanwhile, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hawa Koomson, has given a stern warning to fishermen as the closed fishing season begins.

This period is vital for allowing fish stocks to replenish and sustain the country’s marine resources.

At an event in Dixcove, Western Region, on July 1, Koomson emphasised the imposition of severe penalties for those who violate fishing regulations.

“It has come to my notice that some fisherfolks are planning to land their fish at the Togo border during the closed season.

Therefore, kindly be warned that they will be apprehended and charged if they go ahead with their intention.

Furthermore, there shall be no use of monofilament nets and any unauthorised fishing gear after the opening of the season,” she stated.

  • Hawa Koomson walked away free but you detained a woman whose name you misspelt – Mahama slams Police

Hawa Koomson walked away free but you detained a woman whose name you misspelt – Mahama slams Police

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for what he characterized as acts of inequality and selective justice.

He pointed out the incident involving the current Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who discharged a firearm at a voter registration center without facing any consequences, while Naa Koryoo was detained for legally possessing a firearm.

He accused the police of politically motivated and unfair selective enforcement of their discretionary arrest powers.

“The inequality and selective justice of this government are gullying, otherwise, how could Hawa Koomson, who fired a weapon at a registration centre and boasted about it, walk away free and a parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East is detained partly because the very police that issued her with a firearm’s license misspelt her name?” the former president said in a live broadcast on Sunday, June 9.

Despite these intimidation tactics, Mr. Mahama expressed confidence in Madam Okunor’s victory in the parliamentary race.

He claimed that the police have effectively secured the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat for the party’s candidate, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, by arresting and detaining her in a bid to intimidate her.

“If the government was seeking to break the spirit of Naa Koryoo with that politically organised arrest, they have rather handed over the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the young woman, who by all standards towers over and above the incumbent,” he said.

Hawa Koomson, Police are scared because Naa Koryoo is on the path to victory – Pablo

The National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, George Opare Addo, has voiced his strong belief in the electoral success of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the forthcoming parliamentary race for the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region.

Mr Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo claims that Hawa Koomson is apprehensive about losing the election, which has led to various manipulative tactics, including the unjust arrest of the NDC candidate.

In a post on X on Saturday, June 8, he said, “Every tactic used against Naa Koryoo only confirms her growing strength. She’s the leader Kasoa needs, and we’ll ensure she triumphs. Hawa Koomson and the police are scared because they know Naa Koryoo is on the path to victory. Let’s rally behind Naa and push forward to December.”

George Opare Addo’s remarks came after the release of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress’ Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, from police custody on Saturday.

Madam Okunor was initially detained on Sunday, June 2, 2024, and questioned, followed by another arrest and detention on Friday, June 7. Her arrest sparked outrage from the NDC, with flagbearer John Dramani Mahama condemning the action and calling for her immediate release to maintain national stability.

In response, Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communications Officer, called on party members to assemble at the Cantonments Police Station in protest. Demonstrators, clad in the party’s colors and chanting slogans in support of Okunor, voiced their displeasure at what they perceived to be an unjust and politically motivated detention.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor

Madam Okunor was released on Saturday, but the police have yet to provide an explanation for her arrest. Mr. Addo remains adamant that no political maneuvers will sway the strong support for Naa Koryoo.

“Hawa Koomson’s political games cannot change the will of the people. We are all in for Naa Koryoo. Hawa Koomson thinks she can distract from her failures by targeting Naa Koryoo. The people know better and stand stronger with Naa.”

“Hawa Koomson has nothing to offer but failed tactics. Naa Koryoo carries the hope and support of the people, stronger than ever,” he said.

Mr. Addo also urged the national security and the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to maintain impartiality and resist political pressures. He called on them to uphold justice fairly and without bias.

“If you cannot uphold justice and resist political pressure from Nana Addo and Bawumia, you are unfit for your role IGP. We demand action, not compliance,” he said.

You’re not above the law, the day of accountability is near – NDC warns Hawa Koomson

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has cautioned the MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, over her alleged illegal activities and her role in the arrest of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, NDC’s candidate contesting the 2024 parliamentary election in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region.

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor who was arrested and detained by the police on Friday, June 7, and was released the following Saturday morning after intense backlash from the opposition party.

Addressing the media at a press conference after the release, the NDC cautioned the Police to be professional in carrying out its mandate.

Mr Asiedu Nketia also cautioned Hawa Koomson to desist from engaging in any activities that contradict the laws of the country.

He noted that despite the forces that may be supporting the MP, “the day of accountability is near.”

The police have not issued any public statements regarding the arrest.

The initial disclosure of Okunor’s detention came from the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi highlighted that the police provided no explanation for her arrest and detention, characterizing it as an attempt to silence the NDC.

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of three individuals, including Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, for possessing a firearm without lawful authority. They were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor. A pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized during the arrest.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 5, Okunor clarified that she was invited by the police and not formally arrested. She maintained that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and was obtained for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. Okunor alleged that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations with the MP, where she was attacked and gunshots were fired.

Before Okunor’s arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise. This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, the son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains uncertain whether Okunor’s subsequent arrest is linked to the stabbing incident or solely related to the firearm possession charge.

Free Naa Koryoo now for the sake of justice, Ghana’s stability – Mahama tells IGP

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly release Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region.

Mr. Mahama conveyed this appeal in a Facebook post on the evening of Friday, June 7, 2024.

“I urge the IGP to urgently reconsider his actions and release Naa Koryoo immediately for the sake of justice and the stability of our nation.”

The detention of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was initially brought to light by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr. Gyamfi stated that the police have not provided any reason for her arrest and subsequent detention. In a social media post, he characterized the situation as an effort to silence the NDC.

Sammy Gyamfi explained, “Her offence is simply that a weapon (gun) was found in her car. The said weapon is registered in her name. All the necessary registration documents have been submitted to the Police.

“Unlike, Hawa Koomson who in 2020 actually fired a gun at a registration center, Naa Koryoo has not fired any gun or weapon. Yet, the …Police service is hell-bent on detaining her.”

He urged all party faithful to throng the Cantonments Police Station in Accra where Naa Koryoo Okunor has been detained.

The following public commentary on the arrest came from Mr John Mahama, the party’s 2024 flagbearer and former president, who said: “There is no justification for the decision by the Inspector General of Police George Dampare, on the orders of the National Security Advisor, Albert Kan Dapaah, to detain a Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in Police custody.”

“This action, taken on the instructions of the National Security Secretariat, will needlessly raise the political temperature in the country and spark avoidable tension. The Police Service and the IGP must not allow themselves to be used to hang the peace and stability of our nation months before crucial national elections. I call on the IGP, the Peace Council, the government, and the people of Ghana to recognise that justice is not just a moral imperative but a crucial prerequisite for maintaining peace and stability in a nation.”

“We cannot allow the police service to be used to stifle opposition and intimidate innocent Ghanaians and political opponents in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Clearly, the intention to detain her after she had already been granted bail is an attempt to intimidate the NDC Parliamentary candidate in her quest to unseat the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.”

“It is high time the police fulfilled their duty to serve and protect all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations. #JusticeForNaaKoryoo. #FreeNaaKoryooNow.”

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced that three individuals were arrested at Ofaakor for possessing a firearm without lawful authority.

The suspects, including Ms. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, Mustapha Mohammed, and Abdul Aziz Musah, were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor. During the arrest, a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized from the vehicle.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 5, Ms. Okunor clarified that she was invited by the police rather than formally arrested. She stressed that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and explained that she obtained it for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson.

Ms. Okunor claimed that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations, where the MP allegedly attacked her and even fired gunshots.

“I have never been arrested. Yes, I was invited to the police station. I was not arrested. I was there because I had to go there.

“My driver was arrested, and my security guard was arrested because a licensed gun was found in my car…It was far away from the registration centre,” she said.

Prior to the arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise. This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson, who was subsequently hospitalized. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains unclear whether the subsequent arrest of the NDC Parliamentary Candidate is connected to the stabbing incident or solely pertains to the firearm possession charge.

I bought a gun as defense against Hawa Koomson’s threats – Phillis Okunor

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has admitted to obtaining a firearm for self-protection against the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Reflecting on the 2020 elections, Ms. Okunor accused the MP of threatening her life on four separate occasions, expressing frustration over the lack of police intervention following these incidents.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday (June 5), Ms. Okunor stressed the necessity of carrying a gun, asserting, “I can best protect myself and not any other person against Hawa Koomson.”

She recalled that during the last general elections, Ms. Koomson wielded a firearm at her on multiple occasions.

Ms. Okunor pointed out that despite her reports, there were no arrests, inquiries, or investigations conducted, and the cases were ultimately ignored by authorities.

“When we look back at the 2019-2020 elections, Hawa Koomson pulled a gun on me on four separate occasions. There were no arrests, no interrogations, no investigations, nothing. The matter just faded away. And since then, the police haven’t offered any form of protection for me,” she remarked.

Ms. Okunor also addressed recent rumors of her arrest, clarifying that she was not detained following the violent incidents in Kasoa.

On June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service apprehended three individuals, including Ms. Okunor, for unlawful possession of a firearm in Ofaakor, near Kasoa.

The trio was intercepted near the Electoral Commission’s office while traveling in a Honda CRV, from which a pump-action gun and ammunition were seized.

Ghana is doing far better than other countries; control your spending – Hawa Koomson

During a recent interview on Onua FM’s morning show, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, highlighted Ghana’s relative economic stability compared to other countries, urging citizens to control their spending.

Koomson pointed out that even in developed countries like Germany, people face challenges such as limited access to electricity, which affects their daily routines.

She noted that in Germany, many people only bathe twice a week due to electricity rationing, emphasizing that she was referring to Germany and not Nigeria.

The minister emphasized that while times are tough everywhere, Ghana is faring better in comparison to other countries.

“Today, go to Germany, many people don’t bath regularly due to electricity. They bath twice a week, because there is no light, no water. There is a time given them to use electricity. I’m talking about Germany and not Nigeria.

“Things are difficult everywhere but when you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing far better,” she said.

She urged Ghanaians to be mindful of their spending habits and to appreciate the relative stability and access to basic amenities they enjoy in Ghana.

Ghanaians are being urged to prioritize their needs and be mindful of how they spend their money, particularly in light of rising food prices.

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, emphasized the importance of adapting to changing economic circumstances, noting that what may have been affordable in the past may not be the case today.

Hawa Koomson highlighted that while food prices have increased, food remains available. She cautioned against expecting to spend the same amount as in previous years, pointing out that as people’s tastes change and the economy evolves, the cost of living naturally rises.

During a recent interview on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɛn Nsɛmpa, she cited the instance where Gh50 might have been sufficient to prepare a meal like fufu with fish last year, adding beef or goat meat to the dish this year would come with an additional cost.

“Food is expensive but it is available. Don’t expect that last year you were able to purchase cassava for Gh50, you can do same this year. No, that is not how it works. The world is progressing.

“So what you were spending 2 or 3 years ago, you should not expect to be spending the same thing this year. This shows that you are not progressing. Because your taste has changed. So if 50gh could help you prepare fufu with some fish last year, now you want to add some beef or goat meat. Is that not coming with an additional cost.

“We need to look at our lives,” she said.

During a recent interview on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɛn Nsɛmpa, Koomson emphasized the need to adapt to changing circumstances in the face of rising costs.

“Food is expensive but it is available,” Koomson stated. “Don’t expect that last year you were able to purchase cassava for Gh50, you can do same this year. No, that is not how it works. The world is progressing.”

The minister pointed out that evolving tastes and preferences contribute to changes in spending habits. She explained that if individuals were spending a certain amount of money on food two or three years ago, they should not expect to spend the same amount today.

“So what you were spending 2 or 3 years ago, you should not expect to be spending the same thing this year,” Koomson remarked. “It shows that you are not progressing. Because your taste has changed.”

Hawa Koomson used the example of preparing fufu with fish, stating that if Gh50 could cover the cost in the past, adding beef or goat meat to the meal would naturally come with an additional cost.

The minister’s comments come amid concerns about the rising cost of living in Ghana, with many grappling with the impact of inflation and other economic challenges.

If rent is expensive in Ghana, then go to Canada – Hawa Koomson

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has defended Ghana’s rental prices amid increasing concerns about the high cost of living.

During a recent interview on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɛn Nsɛmpa, hosted by Nana Yaa Brefo and JB, the Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament encouraged Ghanaians to consider rental rates in comparison to those in Canada.

She emphasised her recent trip to Canada, pointing out that even renting a single room there could exceed 2,000 Canadian dollars per month, which is considerably higher than in Ghana.

“People have been complaining that rent is expensive in Ghana. They should go to Canada. For a month, you pay over 2,000 Canadian dollars. That’s for a single room, not even a chamber or hall.

“Things are hard now, and there is a high cost of living everywhere, and when you compare Ghana to other countries, Ghana is doing far better,” she said in Twi.

Mavis Hawa Koomson, Ghana’s Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, staunchly defended the nation’s affordable rental rates amidst global economic challenges.

She attributed this affordability to the government’s diligent efforts.

Addressing criticisms comparing living conditions between Ghana and Canada, Koomson refuted claims that Canada offered superior living standards. She argued that the cost of living in Canada doesn’t necessarily outweigh that of Ghana.

In defence of the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Koomson highlighted the distribution of food items to citizens as a critical intervention.

She explained that, unlike in Canada, where financial stipends were provided, Ghana opted for food distribution due to resource constraints.

  • Farouk Aliu Mahama remains blacklisted as GJA lifts media blackout on Hawa Koomson

Farouk Aliu Mahama remains blacklisted as GJA lifts media blackout on Hawa Koomson

Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has lifted the media blackout imposed on Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya East and Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson. The decision was made following engagement between the GJA and its media partners on February 15, 2024.

In a press release issued by the GJA and sighted by GhanaWeb, it was disclosed that the decision to revoke the media blackout was primarily based on Hawa Koomson’s engagement with the association and her promise to facilitate justice for journalist David Kobenna, who was assaulted during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in her constituency.

The release stated, “The decision was taken after the GJA and its media partners met on Thursday, February 15, 2024, to review the blackout imposed on the MP, who is also the Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development.” It further highlighted that Hawa Koomson redeemed her promise to engage the GJA in resolving the impasse, which led to a meeting between the National Executive of the Association and the Minister at the Ghana International Press Centre.

During the meeting, Hawa Koomson assured the GJA of her commitment to supporting efforts to ensure justice for David Kobenna. She stated, “I will give you the necessary support,” indicating her willingness to collaborate with the association in seeking redress for the assaulted journalist.

However, the GJA clarified that the media blackout on another MP of the ruling NPP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, the MP for Yendi, remains in force.

    Background:

The media blackout on Hawa Koomson and Farouk Aliu Mahama was initiated by the GJA after the two MPs were accused of assaulting journalists during separate incidents. Hawa Koomson allegedly ordered thugs to attack a Cape FM journalist, David Kobbina, during the vetting of NPP parliamentary aspirants in Awutu Senya East Constituency. Similarly, Farouk Aliu Mahama was accused of physically assaulting a journalist during the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary in Yendi.

The GJA’s decision to lift the media blackout on Hawa Koomson underscores the importance of engagement and commitment to addressing issues of assault against journalists, emphasizing the role of cooperation between political figures and media associations in upholding press freedom and ensuring accountability for attacks on journalists.

Media blackout against Hawa Koomson revoked – GJA announces

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), in consultation with its media partners, has lifted the media blackout imposed on Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu-Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The decision was made after a meeting on Thursday, February 15, 2024, to review the situation.

The blackout was initially imposed in response to the assault of a Cape FM morning show host by individuals allegedly linked to the MP.

However, after Ms. Koomson engaged with the GJA and promised to address the issue, the blackout was lifted. The GJA has urged journalists and media houses to comply accordingly.

She was accompanied by the Minister-designate for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, for the meeting, which was attended by the President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Edwin Arthur, the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Gloria Hiadzi, and the Programme Manager for Freedom of Expression at the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Muheeb Saeed.

Also present were the Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Simon Agianab, the President of the New Media Association, Eugene Nkansah; the Executive Secretary of PRINPAG, Jeorge Wilson Kingson, and Gabriel Asante Bosompem, who is one of two GJA representatives on the National Media Commission (NMC).

The Association stated that after extensive deliberations, Ms. Koomson expressed her commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure justice for David Kobenna.

Ms. Abubakar added that the Awutu-Senya East MP was willing to collaborate with the GJA to resolve the issue and that the Ministry of Information would also support in this regard.

“On behalf of the media partners, the GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, commended the Fisheries Minister for taking such positive steps to help find a solution to the problem and expressed the hope that she would live by her pledge,” it added.

Meanwhile, the GJA and its media partners have urged all media houses to continue enforcing the blackout imposed on the MP for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama.

This decision was made in response to allegations that Mr. Mahama assaulted Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, the Northern Regional correspondent of Citi FM/TV, during the NPP parliamentary primaries on January 27, 2024.

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, has appealed to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to reconsider its decision to blacklist her.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on January 25, initiated a media blackout on Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson in response to the assault on one of its journalists, David Kobbina.

This means the media will not cover news related to or statements made by Hawa Koomson, possibly as a form of protest.

The unfortunate attack on David Kobbina occurred on January 4, 2024, sparking widespread condemnation. The attackers accused David Kobbina of insulting Hawa Koomson on a TV show, a claim the victim denied, clarifying that he worked as a morning show host of a radio station.

In reaction, the GJA called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to investigate and take action against those linked to the attack, while also calling on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly address the incident.

With both the NPP and the police failing to act after three weeks after the incident, the GJA has now declared a media blackout against, Hawa Koomson.

Responding to the GJA’s directive, Hawa Koomson in a statement issued by her Press Secretary noted that she is deeply concerned especially when she has vehemently denied all accusations leveled against her and her associates.”

“Acknowledging the vital role of the media in our democracy, the Minister is committed to fostering an environment that safeguards journalists in their duty. The Honourable Minister urges the GJA leadership to reconsider the blacklisting decision, emphasizing the absence of evidence implicating her in the incident,” the statement added.

She called for trust in the Ghana Police Service’s ongoing investigation to apprehend the alleged attacker.

“In the spirit of collaboration, the Office of the Honourable Minister will initiate a dialogue with the GJA leadership in the coming days to address any misunderstandings and chart a way forward, fostering a constructive relationship between the Minister and the media,” she added.

Next NDC govt will establish National Apprenticeship Program to check unemployment – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government plans to launch an extensive National Apprenticeship Program.

The program will specifically target job creation for young people while concurrently enhancing their skills.

According to Mahama, the initiative will be executed at the local assembly level, where support will be provided to artisans to engage and employ young individuals.

The NDC flagbearer, currently on the “Building Ghana We Want Tour” in the Ashanti Region, shared these plans during an address to the residents of New Edubiase.

In outlining measures to address youth unemployment, he emphasized the importance of the proposed National Apprenticeship Program in fostering skill development and job opportunities.

“For individuals outside the school system, our emphasis is on skill enhancement, enabling them to explore opportunities in hairdressing, seamstressing, and other artisanal crafts. The next NDC government aims to establish a National Apprenticeship Program, with District Assemblies leading the implementation. They will oversee the registration of artisanal business owners and attach the young people with them. Local Assemblies will allocate funding to mentors who will guide these young individuals,” Mr. Mahama said.

During his engagement with cocoa farmers in New Edubiase, Mr. Mahama indicated that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will introduce initiatives aimed at fostering the growth of the cocoa sector.

The former President highlighted the party’s commitment to implementing measures and policies to support and enhance the cocoa industry, a vital component of Ghana’s economy.

“The next NDC government will continue previous initiatives to improve the cocoa sector. Additionally, we will provide factories in cocoa-growing areas to ensure we add value to the cocoa beans instead of exporting them in their raw form. This will go a long way to help cocoa farmers, and the factories will also help provide jobs to the youth in these areas,” he stated.

I will show you there is a woman who is more than a man – Hawa Koomson tells NDC’s Joseph Yammin, Mustapha Gbande

Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has boldly asserted her preparedness to confront any adversaries advocating violence in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In response to the provocative statements from National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, Joseph Yammin and Mustapha Gbande, Hawa Koomson issued a direct challenge for a face-off in Kasoa, emphasizing that true courage is demonstrated in actions, not mere rhetoric.

Dismissing claims of being inherently violent, Koomson clarified that her past actions were driven by self-defense in the face of attacks from the NDC.

“I am happy to respond. Mustapha Gbandi should be warned, he should leave me out of his mouth, he and his Yammin.

“They know me and I know them, if he thinks ranting on radio is what is manliness, he should forget it. Manliness is shown on the grounds. If he likes he should meet me at Kasoa. He and Joseph Yammin should meet me at Kasoa, I will show them that there is a woman who is more than a man. They should meet me in Kasoa if they believe they are prepared,” she stated.

Refusing to be intimidated, she asserted her commitment to defending herself against any potential assaults from the opposition in the future.

Her resolute stance comes in the wake of threats and calls for NDC members to arm themselves during the 2024 elections, a move she considers unacceptable.

I will unseat Hawa Koomson – Kwaku Boateng as he contests Awutu Senya East seat

The Chairman of the Automobile Dealers Union of Ghana, Kwaku Boateng, has officially declared his candidacy to challenge the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, for the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary ticket in the Awutu Senya East constituency.

Mr Boateng is confident in his ability to secure a 90% victory in the upcoming parliamentary primaries.

Despite being a first-time contender, Mr Boateng is determined to represent the NPP in the 2024 general elections. He sees the incumbent MP’s dwindling popularity as a potential risk for losing the seat to the opposition National Democratic Congress and believes that a new leader is needed to reshape the constituency’s trajectory for the collective benefit of its residents.

Boateng’s campaign strategy focuses on talent and youth development, aiming to tap into the potential of the youth in the constituency. He has submitted his nomination forms and is actively working to garner support for his candidacy.

In contrast, Mavis Hawa Koomson, the incumbent MP, has also filed her nominations and is seeking an overwhelming endorsement from delegates on January 27, 2024. She emphasizes her potential to break the “eight-year cycle” and positions herself as the best candidate to represent the NPP in the constituency.

Boateng, during a visit to the Odukpong Ofaakor Palace to seek permission and blessings from traditional authorities for campaigning, expressed optimism for victory. The traditional authorities urged all candidates to maintain a respectful campaign without resorting to insults, and the NPP party leadership has assured equal opportunities for all candidates during the contest.

2-bedroom house not handed to 2021 Best farmer due to investigations – Fisheries Minister

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, has disclosed that the delay in presenting the Best Farmer’s Award to the deserving recipient is due to investigations regarding the award winner.

46-year-old Alhaji Mohammed Mashud from the Northern region was crowned as the National Best Farmer for 2021 and was to receive a 2-bedroom house.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, she said, “The reason why we are not done with the building is, he knows very well there was an issue with that award winner, so we took almost 8 months to 1 year to do investigations to make sure the fisher had no problem before we could allow the construction to go on.”

On the matter, Minority Spokesperson on Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, said the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture is now requesting funds to put up the building two years after the award ceremonies.

But according to Hawa Koomson, majority of the work has been done, and some final touches will see it to completion.

“If the ranking member is saying we are left with GHC500,000 to complete it, it means we have done the major part of the work, it is left with some finishing touches.”

For Mr Opoku, this was wrong and should not be happening because it shows the country is not committed to rewarding the efforts of her hard-working citizens.

‘Anti-Ken’, Hawa Koomson speaks after Ken sank Bawumia in her constituency

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has expressed her disappointment with the outcome of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary in her constituency.

Despite being a known supporter of Mahamudu Bawumia, her constituency was won by Kennedy Agyapong after the conclusion of the polls.

According to the constituency’s results, Agyapong garnered 724 votes, while Bawumia received 679 votes. Agyapong also secured victory in the region, along with the Volta Region, while Bawumia claimed victory in the remaining 14 regions, emerging as the winner and the NPP’s next flagbearer.

Following the declaration of results in the constituency, Hawa Koomson addressed journalists, attributing her loss to payments made to delegates and allegations of misappropriation of funds.

“I am not surprised, honestly; if all 1,400 plus were to vote, that would have been good for me. So, what we have done is good. My people should not be disappointed; we should wait for the general outcome, which I know is going to be good.

“Like I said, I am happy that on the 24th of August, I was able to beat Kennedy in the region, so if he has beaten me in my constituency, well, it could be, but that doesn’t mean he is stronger than me in the constituency,” she stressed.

On November 4, 2023, Vice President Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP flagbearer election.

The announcement of Bawumia’s victory was made by Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Elections at the Electoral Commission, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

According to the official results, Bawumia secured a landslide victory with 118,210 votes, which accounted for 61.47% of the total votes cast.

His closest rival, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, came in second with 71,996 votes, representing 35.52% of the total valid votes.

The remaining two contenders received less than one percent of the vote each, namely Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

Bawumia’s win marked his formal succession to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party’s leader, becoming the fourth flagbearer in the party’s history.

He is set to lead the NPP into the 2024 general elections.

Let’s go to Akufo-Addo’s house and ask how you became Fisheries Minister – Ken Agyapong to Hawa Koomson

Presidential aspirant of the NPP and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has claimed that he played a pivotal role in President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Mavis Hawa Koomson as the Minister for Fisheries.

During an interview on Kastle FM over the weekend, Kennedy Agyapong asserted that he and Chairman Kutin played a significant role in facilitating around 90% of ministerial appointments in the Central Region.

Agyapong claimed that, despite his assistance in securing positions for individuals like Hawa Koomson and other ministers, they have distanced themselves from him.

Madam Koomson and the Assin Central MP have engaged in disagreements ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries.

“He had finished sharing the positions already, and Hawa didn’t get some… to be honest with you, we were fighting for Alex Markin, but he had issues. They alleged some infractions with Agric bank, so President Akufo-Addo didn’t want to hear his name. So, the most senior was Hawa, and that’s how Hawa Koomson got her ministerial position.

“The last time I met the president and asked him, ‘Wasn’t I the one who came to you and fought for Hawa Koomson to create a Special initiative for her? So, she should go and ask.’ I challenge all the ministers in this region who got their ministerial positions without my influence, I am challenging all of them,” he said.

Reacting to the possibility of any challenge, Mr Agyapong expressed his willing to take Madam Koomson to the President to verify his statements.

“Your choice is your choice, so long as you don’t go out to insult me like what Hawa Koomson has done but for me, I am just quiet and looking at her, today I want to tell her that if she likes the two of us should go to Akufo-Addo’s house and ask him how she got her ministerial position …how they created special initiative for her.”

Agyapong further stated, “Hawa Koomson, who is now saying all sorts of things about me, should go and ask President Akufo-Addo and Chairman Butey. I challenge every politician in the Central Region if anyone can match up my contribution to the region.”

I played a major role in Hawa Koomson becoming Fisheries Minister – Ken Agyapong claims

NPP presidential aspirant and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, says he is the reason behind President Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint Mavis Hawa Koomson as Minister for Fisheries.

During a live radio interview on Kastle FM, Cape Coast, Mr. Agyapong explained that Afenyo-Markin, the MP for Efuttu was denied the Fisheries Minister position due to an issue involving an agriculture bank. As a result, the president rejected his appointment, and the role was subsequently awarded to Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Kennedy Agyapong reiterated his position, asserting that he played a pivotal role in supporting major initiatives championed by Hawa Koomson, the current Minister for Fisheries.

He contended that without his support, she would not have been able to secure any political role, as her voice would have gone unheard.

“How would Hawa Koomson, who was based in the central region have gotten such a position. I was the one who created special initiatives for her. Anyone who is being considered for a ministerial position has to go through me,” he said.

He continued, “Are you saying Hawa Koomson could launch campaigns in the Central Region without me? Who will listen to her?” he questioned.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is presently in the process of selecting its official flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections, scheduled for December 2024.

In this contest, Kennedy Agyapong faces off against Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimo.

The NPP has set the date for its national delegates conference on November 4 to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

Hawa Koomson warns former Obuasi East MP to staff Bawumia

Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson has cautioned former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, Edward Ennin, to refrain from criticizing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and his presidential flagbearership bid.

Minister Koomson, noting Ennin’s membership in the NPP, expressed her concern over his consistent support for Alan Kyerematen, who withdrew from the NPP’s flagbearership race and subsequently left the party.

She advised him to concentrate on his chosen candidate, who is currently planning to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

Ennin’s recent criticism of Bawumia took place during an appearance on Accra-based Okay FM, where he alleged on October 27 that the Vice President’s camp was involved in bribery activities with delegates through high-ranking government officials in preparation for the presidential primaries scheduled for November 4.

In response to these claims, Hawa Koomson called into the program to clarify the situation and issue a warning to Mr Ennin to refrain from targeting Dr Bawumia.

“He should have some discipline and stay off Dr. Bawumia who is the choice of the party. Ennin is on record to have said his candidate is Alan, he should focus on his candidate and remove Bawumia’s name from his mouth,” she submitted.

Hawa Koomson accused Mr Edward Ennin of resorting to tribal politics through his criticisms of Bawumia. She pointed out that the allegations that “President” Bawumia would protect current government appointees implicated in corruption would also implicate his leader, Alan Kyerematen.

“If he comes to speak as he wants, we will all come on board even though I haven’t made up my mind to get into any confrontation, let’s all advocate for our candidates…I am a 100% northern woman and a proud one at that.

“Some of his pronouncements anger us, it takes votes from the north and Volta regions to give the party victory, he should remain focused and leave us alone.” she stressed.

Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong will be in the running for the NPP’s flagbearership, alongside three other contenders: Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The NPP has scheduled the election to choose the party’s leader to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for November 4, 2023.

A leaked audio recording allegedly featuring the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, criticizing Assin Central Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has recently surfaced on a WhatsApp platform.

In the viral voice note shared by One Ghana TV on YouTube, Hawa Koomson can be heard accusing Kennedy Agyapong of being boastful and using the assistance he offers to people as a means to insult them.

She further reveals that she has even turned down help from Kennedy Agyapong, despite his reputation as a businessman and a prominent financier of the NPP, due to his outspoken nature.

“I am not one of those who will receive his help for him to go out and trumpet for the entire world to hear. In 2012 when he said he giving out cars I inquired from Butey and he told me that I had to pay something small which was GHC500 at the time. I told him I won’t pay because the Toyota Corolla I was using was stronger than the Hyundai he was going to give me.

“Also, because I know Kennedy Agyapong will turn around to insult you in the future whenever he helps you and knowing that I didn’t want to be insulted in the future, I did not go for the car.

“So I am not part of those Kennedy Agyapong gives help. That is why when he came to Christ for All Mission to brag and I heard about it I called KT Hammond and Afenyo Markin that these are the lies Kennedy has come to Kasoa to peddle so I want to confront him. Thankfully to God, I met him at KT Hammond’s office where I confronted him and told him my mind because I know I don’t have my hand in his mouth,” she said.

The statement by Hawa Koomson was in response to what she said was an attack by a pro-Ken NPP member on the party’s WhatsApp platform in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture who has openly declared her support for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the NPP flagbearer contest also accused Kennedy Agyapong of not being a true member of the party.

“I am not part of those Kennedy Agyapong takes care of and if Ken Agyapong is a true NPP member he would not threaten to abandon the party to go and live abroad if he is not voted for.

“As a true member will you follow someone with such a mindset; someone who says he won’t work for the party if he loses a contest. Would he expect anyone to come and work for him if he wins?” she questioned.

Hawa Koomson goes on to allege that Kennedy Agyapong has made money from the NPP through contracts but is now is now insisting that he is elected flagbearer because of his assistance to the party.

  • International Fish Festival to be held in Accra

This year’s International Fish Festival slated for November 24 and 25 will be held at the Black Star Square in Accra, Mrs Mavis Hawa Koomson Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, has disclosed.

She said the event would be marked with a durbar of chiefs and chief fisher men, exhibition of fishing and aquaculture inputs, fish products as well as a panel discussion on topical issues in the sector.

Mrs Koomson made the disclosure in an address read for her during this year’s International Food Day at Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.

This year’s celebration was on the theme: “Leave No One Behind, Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment and Better Life.”

The Minister said the festival would provide an opportunity to show case the importance of the sector to national development, deliberate and explore solutions to the challenges confronting the sustainable management of the fisheries resources.

She said the Fisheries Ministry was working to sustain the fisheries and aquaculture sector for the current and future generations by ensuring production of quality fish for consumption and protection of the environment.

Mrs Koomson said the Ministry attached a worth of importance to the celebration of the World Food Day and had participated fully over the years and this demonstrated the Ministry’s pursuit of ameliorating poverty, malnutrition and hunger.

She said fisheries enforcement operations had been intensified to ensure compliance to fisheries laws and combat illegal fishing practices, emphasising that MoFAD had shown its unflinching stance to clump down on illegal operators and prosecute them for infractions through the law courts.

“However, we continue to engage fishers to voluntarily comply with relevant laws with the hope to achieve sustainable fisheries resource management and safeguard livelihoods of persons engaged in the value chain,” she added.

She said healthy diets and better nutrition was fundamental to ending poverty, achieving better quality of life, developing human capital and national development.

Mr Seth Kwasi Agbi, District Chief Executive for South Tongu called for adoption of better productive methods which would translate into produce with required nutrients for a healthy life.

He said government’s flagship projects including Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development and distribution of subsidised fertilizers and high yielding vegetable seedlings to farmers were meant to increase productivity and drive the country’s development agenda.

The DCE said the district was ripe for investment and therefore urged business community to invest in the district, adding that the district had vast fertile arable land, and the people were also willing to venture into commercial farming.

  • Hawa Koomson’s approval as minister was embarrassing – Haruna Iddrisu

Minority Leader and Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has described as embarrassing events that led to the passage of Mavis Hawa Koomson as a Minister.

The then Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry nominee’s appearance before the Appointments Committee was deemed under par relative to the competence of the portfolio, hence a widely held view that the Minority should use their numbers to reject her approval when it came to a vote at the plenary.

That was not to be as the outcome of the vote showed that quite a number of Minority MPs voted in favour of Mrs. Koomson.

This was in early 2021 when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was constituting his new cabinet after winning the 2020 polls.

Months on, Haruna Iddrisu in an interview on Pan African TV explained why Hawa Koomson and other controversial nominees were approved by Parliament.

According to him, once such decisions are put to a secret ballot, the best he can do is to activate the party’s whip asking all members to tow a particular line, if they disobeyed, there was no way of knowing which of them had flouted the group position.

“If you put that to a vote and you saw the embarrassing outcome of Hawa Koomson, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah,” he told the host of the Talk Time Show, Kwesi Pratt.

“Any elected MP is an adult, I Haruna Iddrisu cannot accompany an NDC MP into a ballot box to guide him on how to exercise his vote. He is responsible enough.

“Mine is to issue the party whip, which is the directive that we expect you to stand against this policy, nothing more. And as an adult, respecting the secrecy of the ballot, I cannot be held responsible,” he stressed.

He had in the same interview explained that to the extent that the Constitution said 51% of Ministers should come from Parliament, the best the Minority can do is to vet for competence and knowledge of portfolio and to do as much damage as possible to candidates who do not prove themselves fit.

According to the Minister, the agriculture industry in Ghana experienced an increased rise of 8.4% in 2021 as opposed to the 7.4% seen in 2020.

Dr. Akoto emphasized that farmers should be praised for their accomplishments while speaking at the 38th annual Farmers’ Day celebration’s opening ceremony in Accra.

To this effect, 994 fish farmers have so far been trained in hygienic fish handling, fish processing and marketing strategies, while 200 fish processors have been also trained in best practices.

The 2022 National Farmers’ Day celebration would be held in the Eastern Region on the theme: Accelerating Agricultural Development through value addition.

  • Ban on fishing lifted

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has announced the lifting of the ban on fishing for artisanal and canoe fishers in the country.

She announced this at a ceremony at Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region. This is after her outfit in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission, implemented the closed fishing season for inshore and artisanal fleets for a month.

During the ceremony, she pointed the famous huge wooden key, which she had used to “lock up” the sea at Tema Manhean, seaward and turned it to indicate the lifting of the one-month ban.

Before that, a linguist from the community, Okyeame Metanwoho, had offered four bottles of Schnapps, each from the four coastal regions, to seek permission from the gods to re-enter the sea and ask for a bumper harvest as the fishing season began.

A joyous applause welcomed the lifting of the ban.

The ceremony was attended by fisher associations and groups, fishery agency officials and representatives from civil society organisations, academicians, traditional authorities and other players in the fishing industry.

    Background

The Ministry of Fisheries, in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission, implemented the closed fishing season for inshore and artisanal fleets from July 1 to July 31 as a crucial component of “sustainable fisheries management”.

The goal is to lessen the pressure on fish stock during the peak production period, so that the fish can lay eggs (spawn) to replenish populations that have been decimated by illegal fishing and other natural occurrences.

Fisher associations and other officials from the fisheries agency applauded the ministry for its audacious move to bring some sanity into onshore fishing activities.

    Addressing challenges

The minister said the government was not oblivious of the challenges in the sector, for which reason it had adopted strategic and critical interventions aimed at recovering the fast depleting fishery stocks.

She said her outfit would use every legal means to ensure that people whose actions stalled the ministry’s efforts were arrested to face the law.

The Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Kimberly Rosen, said: “We commend you and your team for the bold decision to continue implementing the closed season and also commend your commitment to end illegal transhipment at sea and the subsequent ministerial directive on the use of appropriate fishing gear by the industrial trawler sector.”

She said the US government was ready and determined to support efforts by the Ministry of Fisheries to boost the fishing industry.

    Caution

The Chief Director of the Fisheries Commission, Fred Kwasi Antwi Boadu, urged fishermen to stop the use of illegal methods in fishing, since such practices reduced the fish population.

He said those illegal actions and climate change had led to a sharp decline in catch, which was harming and depleting fisheries resources which, he said, required conscious efforts to restore.

  • Fisher folks caught flouting fishing regulations to be slapped with $1 million fine, other sanctions – Hawa Koomson

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Mavis Hawa has spelt out clear sanctions for fishermen who are caught fishing with unauthorized fishing nets, engaging in transshipment, and what she describes as “catching and dumping.”

According to her, a $1 million fine would be imposed on such persons.

In addition, she stated that they could be faced with a permanent ban off the sea. Speaking in an interaction with Anim Addo on UTV’s Ayekoo programme, she stated this in line with the laws that bar industrial trawlers from fishing.

Touting her achievements as the Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister in the interview, she stated that prior to her assuming office, canoe operators had no law which regulated their usage of unauthorized nets.

But her administration has introduced directives that allow the arrest and a fine of a thousand units penalty, which is equivalent to an amount of almost three thousand, nine hundred Ghana.

She further added that canoe operators refuse to comply with these fishing directives from the ministry because they realized that industrial trawlers were engaging in transshipment, and dumping at sea.

“As I stated earlier, these canoe operators began using light and unauthorized nets because they realized that the trawler operators were using unauthorized nets to catch the very small fishes for “saiko” and engaging in transshipment at sea,” she said.

In a bid to curb this menace, Mrs. Koomson announced that the ministry has put measures in place to fine members who engage in such unlawful acts.

She also added that a ministerial directive would be given to ensure a thorough inspection of fishing gear before the fishers would be allowed to begin fishing after the closed season is over.

“We have told them to stop these acts. We have also given a ministerial directive that from September 1, we would come around to inspect their fishing gears before they are allowed at sea to prevent the usage of unauthorized gears” she added.

The fishing closed season was announced by the fisheries minister to commence from July 1,2022 to August 1,2022 for artisanal and semi-industrial fleets and July 1 to August 31st for industrial trawlers. The minister announced this at Accra’s 2022 closed season national consultative meeting.

  • Election 2020: NDC to address the media over Hawa Koomson ‘thuggery’

The National Democratic Congress in Awutu Senya East has hinted of addressing the media over the shooting incident on its Parliamentary candidate on Election Day.

The convoy Naa Koryoo on Monday suffered gunshots alleged to have been masterminded by hoodlums of incumbent NPP MP Hawa Koomson, where three people are reported to have suffered some degrees of injuries.

The NDC, in order to give their side of the story, says it is going to address the media.

    Below is the statement

Some thugs in a Rambo style shot into this car which had just moved from Naa Koryoo, the NDC Parliamentary candidate’s House in Kasoa. Three NDC Branch executives were shot in the car and one is in critical condition. There are some police personnel at the scene taking fingerprints on the car.

We just left the crime scene to the polling station where Naa Koryoo is supposed to vote and there is still a long queue and people are determined to cast their ballot. Apparently, Naa Koryoo was the target but she was not in the car when the shooting happened. We have been informed by one of the constituency executives that there will be a press conference shortly.

No amount of thuggery, violence or intimidation shall stop the people’s resolve to kick out Akuffo-Addo and his violent party out of power.

  • Akufo-Addo ignores calls for Hawa Koomsons dismissal in latest national address – Report

The President, Nana Akufo-Addo has condemned the pockets of violence recorded during the just-ended voter registration exercise but failed to directly address calls on him to sack his Minister for Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The minister, during the registration exercise, had pulled a gun and shot several times with some of the bullets hitting the home of an elderly and her grandchildren at the ‘Step to Christ’ polling station in Awutu Senya East Constituency, sending them running for their dear lives.

But delivering his 15th national address on Ghana’s fight against COVID-19, only described those incidents as “regrettable,” despite claiming that they were “isolated incidents” within the largely successful exercise.

The shooting by Mr. Koomson occurred during a confrontation between her and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). She insisted she fired the gunshot in self-defence because she felt threatened, while touring registration centres.

“I’m a Member of Parliament, I need to protect myself. It was at dawn; my police escort had not started work yet. So, that is the modus operandi I engaged in his absence,” she told Accra-based Adom FM.

The gun action at the polling centre sparked chaos with electoral commission officials running for cover and the registration being brought to an end.

Security experts, religious organizations including the Christian Council as well as neutral observers like the National Peace Council. Have called for a resignation or dismissal, however, President Akufo-Addo in a sweeping statement, only said the Police Service must deal decisively with those involved in the violence.

But the President said “By the grace of God, the work of the Electoral Commission, and the effective measures put in place by the government, these prophecies of doom did not materialize. There were, nonetheless, deeply regrettable, isolated incidents of violence, which I condemn unreservedly, and which I expect the Police to deal with without fear or favour, but the exercise was generally peaceful.”

The President further mocked persons who had kicked against the plan to compile a new register.

He said some of them “who swore heaven and earth to resist the compilation of the register at the peril of their lives, ended up registering.”

“There were also those who offered delicate, personal sacrifices in the event of the register, again, ending up registering. And, there were those who claimed that, in the midst of a pandemic, the registration exercise should not be conducted, with some warning of an “explosion” in our case count and very high numbers of deaths, should the exercise go ahead,” Nana Addo added.

Nana Addo, also said he is extremely happy over the ‘orderly and safe’ conduct of the registration contrary to widespread condemnation of the exercise over claims it will lead to a surge in the number of infections and deaths.

“The Electoral Commission has completed the successful compilation of a new register ahead of the conduct of the 2020 general election. On behalf of the people of Ghana, I congratulate warmly, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ms. Jean Mensa, her two deputies, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare and Mr. Samuel Tetteh and the entire commission for their efficient, safe and transparent nature of the registration exercise”, he said.

On the same issue, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to fast track investigations and prosecution of persons who perpetrated the violence.

CODEO further asked the IGP to make available findings of its investigations to the public to foster confidence in the security agencies and to serve as a deterrent to others.

It specifically mentioned incidences that happened at Banda and Dormaa West all in the Bono Region and Awutu Senya East in the Central Region.

It made the call in its preliminary report on the phases 4, 5, and 6 of the just-ended exercise.

“CODEO calls on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ghana Police Service working with the Attorney General (AG) to act expeditiously to complete all investigations including the violent incidents in Banda which resulted in the death of one young man, as well as the incident in Awutu Senya East in the Central Region and in Dormaa West in the Bono region. Persons found culpable in various criminal breaches of the law should be prosecuted and sanctioned in accordance with the laws of Ghana.”

“CODEO urges the Police administration to share updates of these investigations with the Ghanaian public to foster confidence in the security agencies and to also serves as a deterrent against future incidents of this nature. Failure to enforce the rule of law will erode confidence in the security agencies and the rule of law.”

In Banda, Silas Wulochamey, a 28-year-old man was allegedly stabbed at a registration centre at Banda in the Bono Region.

Reports suggest that he was stabbed at the registration centre following an altercation between some NPP and NDC supporters.

Supporters of the NPP and the NDC clashed in the Bono regional community leading to the death of one person.

Speaker Prof. Mike Ocquaye faulted the Majority MPs for showing what he termed excess solidarity towards their colleagues whose actions or inactions stall the work of the house.

  • Suspend Hawa Koomson Concerned Citizens of Kasoa petitions Parliament

Some residents in the Awutu Senya East Constituency, called the Concerned Citizens of Kasoa, are demanding the suspension of their MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, following her role in the confusion that broke out at a voter registration centre in the area.

They insist that she engaged in acts of violence and dishonesty after she fired a gun at the Steps to Christ registration centre.

In a petition presented to the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, the group argued that the suspension will allow security agencies to proceed with investigations regarding her use of a firearm at the registration centre in Kasoa.

The petition added that the suspension will strip the MP of all parliamentary privileges that may hamper ongoing investigations.

Mrs. Koomson has so far been interrogated by the Central Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service.

The police are also in possession of her gun and ammo.

But a spokesperson of the Concerned Citizens of Kasoa, Humphrey Hosso, suggested that the group feels the MP is getting preferential treatment.

“If you and I did a tenth of what she did, you and I would have been behind bars by now. Is it because she is enjoying some Parliamentary immunity?”

“We are very much concerned about the injustice going on in this country. Nobody should be above the law. We are all fighting for this democracy,” he insisted.

    Background

The shooting occurred during a confrontation between persons believed to be aligned to the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress.

Both sides have claimed they were attacked by each other leading to the shooting and subsequent arrest of four persons.

Four persons were arrested in connection with the incident.

Mrs. Koomson insists that she fired the weapon in self-defence and has received backing from fellow New Patriotic Party members, including government appointees.

Despite her claims, there have been calls for her to resign or be sacked from her Special Development Initiatives ministerial portfolio by political stakeholders like the National Democratic Congress and neutral observers like the National Peace Council.

  • Give Hawa Koomson a break, she acted in self-defence – Council of Churches

The Council of local churches in the Awutu Senya East Municipality has taken a swipe at persons calling for the dismissal of Special Development Initiatives Minister, Hawa Koomson for firing warning shots at a registration centre last week.

The religious body stated on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the Minister acted in self-defence when her life was threatened hence there is no need for anyone to call for her dismissal.

Leader of the Council, Rev. William Baako said the call for her dismissal is misguided and unwarranted.

He claims the Minister and MP was trailed by unknown assailants who wanted to harm her and the only way she could have defended herself was through the warning shots.

He also slammed the Peace Council Chair for calling for the dismissal of the MP.

“I call on the National Peace Council of Ghana to refrain from calling for the resignation of Honorable Mavis Hawa Koomson, Member of Parliament for Kasoa and Minister for Special Development Initiatives. Our call is based on the law of natural principles and solidly grounded in the 1992 constitution of Ghana.”

The Council he added believes the MP has for several years remained a very calm and solemn political figure worthy of emulation in our society.

“But the facts of the matter are such that she was caught up within the midst of thugs who were wielding weapons and without the presence of her personal bodyguard. Suppose her personal bodyguard was even around, she, the MP/Minister also has a responsibility, over her life and possesses every right to defend herself,” he explained.

Rev. Baako averred that there are many examples of political figures who have been gruesomely murdered in our country.

“Sadly, we have not witnessed any logical conclusion of those murder incidences. It is therefore astonishing that such honoUrable personality has come under vilifying condemnation from civil society organizations including the National Peace Council,” he declared.
