Police commander watched as I was assaulted without intervening – Ibrahim Mahama

Renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has made new revelations regarding his alleged assault by the police.

On March 21, Mahama was returning from Eid-ul-Fitr prayers when his vehicle was stopped near the Mariam Hotel junction. He alleged that officers from the IGP’s Special Operations Team (Black Maria) entered his bus, forced him to unlock his phone, and deleted footage he had taken.

In his recent revelation, he noted that the Commander of the Police Special Operations Team, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, was present during his alleged assault and could have stopped it, but failed to intervene.

While noting that the DSP was not involved in the physical assault, he said the commander was right there from the beginning until they arrived at the police station.

“He was not physically involved in the assault, but all the men were acting under his command because he was on the site from the very beginning until we went to the police station,” Mahama said.

He recounted the events in detail, stating that the officer remained present throughout the incident.

“…He was on the site, he was there at the scene, the Mariam Hotel, when the whole thing happened and when we went to the police station, we were in a police pickup behind his car, which we were driven to the police station,, and they asked us to take off our clothes because my clothes were covered in blood.

“There, the officers continued to assault me because they wanted me to delete the video that they thought I was taking of them when they started hitting the car, and I started filming, and that was what they were actually annoyed by, that I was filming them.”

Mahama maintained that the team’s commander was fully aware of the assault but did nothing to stop it.

“For me, it wasn’t a matter of whether he hit us or not. Everything happened under his command. If he wanted it to stop or if he didn’t want it to transpire at all, that would have been the case, but that was not what happened. He did know [it was me] very well,” he stated in an interview with Citi FM.

According to him, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil was familiar with his family and even himself, expressing surprise as to why he left him to be assaulted by his men and watched on during the alleged assault.

His account contradicts an earlier statement from the police team, which denied that any assault took place. The officers stated that the incident arose from a traffic enforcement operation that escalated after a driver allegedly blocked the road and failed to comply with instructions.

According to the police, officers acted to prevent a possible mob attack and arrested those involved for offensive conduct, later releasing them into the custody of their father.

    IGP meets Ibrahim Mahama

On March 26, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, alongside the Police Management Board, met the renowned Ghanaian artist as part of investigations into the incident.

The Northern Regional Police Commander was also invited to assist with the probe.

The case was transferred to CID Headquarters and the Police Professional Standards Bureau for independent investigation.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has revealed that she has held talks with the Interior Minister to ensure that those responsible for the alleged assault on Ibrahim Mahama are traced and prosecuted.

She voiced strong concern over the reported attack on the Ghanaian artist, describing the development as both troubling and unacceptable.

Her comments follow reports that Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art and Red Clay Studio in Tamale, was allegedly assaulted on March 21, 2026, by individuals suspected to be members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Black Maria.”

The incident is said to have left the artist with dental injuries, including a missing tooth, while his uncle, who was behind the wheel at the time, also suffered injuries.

In a Facebook post dated March 22, 2026, Dzifa Gomashie conveyed her sympathy and support to the artist.

“Dear Mr Ibrahim Mahama, it is with deep concern and regret that I write to you, upon learning of the unfortunate incident involving your reported assault.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and in my personal capacity, I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with you during this difficult time,” she stated.

She added that the alleged attack raises critical issues relating to justice and human rights, which must be addressed promptly.

“It is therefore deeply troubling to hear of any circumstance that undermines your dignity and personal safety. As a nation that prides itself on upholding justice, human rights, and the rule of law, such incidents must be addressed with the seriousness they deserve,” she said.

The minister further disclosed that she had engaged the Interior Minister to facilitate a thorough probe into the matter.

“It is in view of this that I have held discussions with the Hon. Minister for the Interior, who has assured me of his utmost support in unravelling the people behind this cowardly act,” she added.

She also assured the artist of the government’s continued support, emphasizing that his safety and contributions to the creative industry remain highly valued.

“Please be assured that we stand with you; your safety, well-being, and your priceless contributions to the creative sector remain of utmost importance to Ghana and the world,” she added.

Foreign Affairs Ministry grants diplomatic passports to Anita Erskine, Ibrahim Mahama, Wode Maya, 2 others

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has granted diplomatic passports to five distinguished individuals.

They are Dentaa, Wode Maya, Rocky Dawuni, Anita Erskine, and Ibrahim Mahama.

These individuals were recognized at the Media launch of the Diaspora Summit 2025 based on their contributions in promoting Ghana and Africa’s image on global stages.

The Office of the President, Diaspora Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborated to organize the event.

According to the ministry, the event is aimed at empowering cultural ambassadors whose global demand and influence can strengthen trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and soft power diplomacy

Meanwhile, A total of 40,648 visas have been issued by Ghana’s missions in Washington, D.C., and New York from January 2025 to date.

Out of this, 28,626 are multiple-entry visas to Ghana.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this information known while debunking reports that it is responsible for the United States government’s revision of the reciprocity schedule for a considerable number of African countries, including Ghana, reducing the B1/B2 visa validity from 5 years multiple entry to 3 months single entry.

Ghanaian visa applicants can no longer access the 5-year visa and multiple-entry.

It was reported that the Foreign Ministry had also limited the number of entries and duration given to US passport holders, hence the reciprocity by the US government.

However, in a statement, the Ministry refuted this claim, noting that consistent with bilateral arrangements, US passport holders are entitled to a maximum visa validity of five years, and in most instances, five-year multiple-entry visas are issued upon request.

“Some applicants, however, apply for single-entry visas owing largely to limited validity of their passports,” the statement read.

Besides the maximum five-year multiple visas, Ghana also issues multiple-entry 6-month, one-year, two-year, three-year, and four-year visas based on various considerations.

The statement further indicated that “The official statistics clearly demonstrate that contrary to false narratives, Ghana has issued, on average, an impressive 70.42% of multiple long-term visas to US passport holders, consistent with our bilateral arrangements.”

The Foreign Ministry noted that the present limitations imposed by the United States vary substantially from the prior reciprocal arrangements that Ghana has kept with the United States.

The US’ decision has sparked concerns, and the Ministry has acknowledged the legitimate concerns of Ghanaian travellers to the United States for professional, business, educational, touristic, medical and family purposes inconvenienced.

The Ministry has expressed its firm solidarity with all thoseGhana recognizes the sovereign right of every country to determine its visa regime.

While the Government of Ghana studies the current developments more closely and considers its options, it remains committed to working expeditiously with its longstanding partner, the US Government.

“We hope for an early resolution of the concerns that have led to the revision of the schedule which have been confirmed to be overstays, including by ensuring that the conduct of applicants align with the visa application procedures and requirements of the United States,” the statement added.

Government has stated that it will, at its highest levels, sustain best efforts in strengthening relations with the United States in a manner that further enhances people-to-people relations in the mutual interest of both countries.

The updated guidelines, published under the U.S. Visa, reveal that Reciprocity and Civil Documents by Country for Ghana also affect student visa applicants.

F-1 visa holders, who are typically enrolled in full-time academic programmes in the U.S., will now be issued visas that allow for only one entry and expire after three months.

Diplomats and government officials will, however, continue to receive multiple-entry visas with validity ranging from 24 to 60 months.

The K1 visa, issued to the foreign-citizen fiancé(e) of a US citizen intending to marry within 90 days of arrival in the United States, and the K2 visa, provided to the unmarried dependent child (under 21 years old) of a K1 visa holder, are single-entry visas that will be valid for 6 months.

The K3 visa, for the foreign-citizen spouse of a US citizen, and the K4 visa, for their unmarried dependent child (under 21 years old), are multiple-entry visas that will be valid for 24 months.

All other visa applicants, including those applying for B-class visas, which cover business and tourism travel, will now be issued single-entry visas valid for just three months.

Let’s push Ibrahim Mahama or Alan Cash to succeed Mahama – Medikal to Ghanaians

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has advised Ghanaians to vote for Mr Ibrahim Mahama (brother of President Mahama) or Alan Kyerematen, popularly known as Alan Cash (leader of the Movement for Change), to retain President Mahama’s legacy after his 4-year term is over.

Medikal believes that President Mahama’s leadership since his inauguration on January 7, 2025, has been nothing short of impressive.

Unfortunately, he is currently serving his final term, which is set to conclude in January 2029.

With hopes that the president will continue to favourably steer the affairs of the nation, Medikal appeals to Ghanaians not to hand over power to anyone other than Ibrahim Mahama or Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng in the next election.

“Make una pray make Mahama no leave power oo, very serious guy ! Even if he does finish his term, he should pass it over to Ibrahim Mahama, his brother or Alan Cash. These men have serious ambitions to make Ghana a great nation trust me,” Medikal wrote on his X account.

Mr Ibraham Mahama, who is known to be a businessman, has been very supportive of his brother’s presidency through the provision of financial aid to citizens who had challenges difficult to handle due to the lack of funds.

The businessman donated GH₵100,000 to various communities affected by tidal wave flooding in the Volta Region months ago.

He also donated $25,000 for a young girl’s kidney transplant including several others.

He contributed $100,000 towards leukemia treatment for another child several months ago.

His contributions to industry and social impact have earned him prestigious honors, including African Industrialist of the Year and the Ultimate Man of the Year award.

Alan Kyeremanten, on the other hand, visited Katamanto market with some senior members of the Movement for Change alliance in January to show their solidarity with victims of a fire outbreak that ravaged several shops in the area.

They donated GHS100,000 to the affected traders to ease their immediate challenges, a move that was deeply appreciated by the traders.

He has also been acknowledged for his vision for the youth in Ghana and several initiatives to make every nook and cranny of their lives better.

President John Dramani Mahama has made significant strides in governance, economy, education, and social welfare in the first 120 days of his new term, though several pledges are yet to be initiated.

The swift nomination of a full cabinet, reflecting Mahama’s commitment to getting the machinery of government moving without delay, forms part of his major accomplishments.

His administration has also formed a leaner government, reducing the number of ministers and presidential staffers.

One of the most praised initiatives is the introduction of a Code of Conduct for appointees, aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.

In economic policy, Mahama has delivered on his pledge to convene a National Economic Dialogue, bringing together experts and stakeholders to shape a long-term recovery agenda.

Similarly, a National Education Dialogue was organized to realign policy direction in the education sector.

The administration has launched several social and environmental programs, including “Tree for Life” and “Blue Water”, which focus on reforestation and water resource protection. The No Fee Stress initiative has also been introduced to reduce the financial burden on basic school parents.

Mahama’s government has abolished the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and Emissions Levy, providing immediate financial relief to citizens and businesses, with the Covid-19 Levy expected to be removed in the next budget.

Other notable fulfilled promises include: Launch of the one Million Coders Programme to build digital skills among youth, rollout of the Mahama Cares social protection framework, introduction of the Adwumawura Programme to promote job creation, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, free sanitary pad initiative for schoolgirls, Black Star Experience, a flagship tourism and cultural revival program, seed money for the Women’s Development Bank, Establishment of the Accelerated Export Development Council, probing the Akosombo dam spillage, which affected thousands and the restructuring of loss-making State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to ensure efficiency

“And so what?” – Opeele slams critics over Mahama using his brother’s private jet

Former coach of Asante Kotoko, Isaac Opeele Boateng, has jumped to the defence of President John Dramani Mahama for using his brother, Ibrahim Mahama’s, private jet.

According to him, since using the jet does not cost the nation any money, there should not be a problem.

He noted that President Mahama has been gracious to the nation compared to how the previous government spent heavily on private jets for international travels.

Coach Opeele chided those criticizing the president and rejected claims of conflict of interest.

“What is so wrong with President Mahama using his brother’s private plane to save Ghana money?

“Some say it will bring conflict of interest. And so what? We saw one family do worse to Ghana in eight years. Mahama is even charitable; I wish he chartered Emirates Airline instead,” he wrote on X.

This comes after some Ghanaians expressed concerns over President Mahama’s use of a private jet for his recent state visits to Gambia and Senegal.

The president, who embarked on the visits, used the “Dzata” private jet, an aircraft owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama.

The Acting Spokesperson to President John Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has clarified the President’s decision to use a private jet owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for recent official trips to Senegal and The Gambia.

In response to public scrutiny, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the arrangement has been in place since before the 2024 general elections and assured citizens that it does not impose any financial burden on the state.

“The most critical point is that this alternative arrangement has not in any way, shape, or form cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime. President Mahama is mindful of the precarious economic situation and is committed to utilising public funds prudently,” he said during an interview with TV3.

The official presidential aircraft, according to the spokesperson, is currently under review by the Communications Squadron of the Ghana Air Force. This, he said, necessitated the temporary use of the private jet.

“President Mahama will revert to using the official presidential jet as soon as the review is completed. The president is focused on ensuring the best outcomes for Ghana, especially during these economically challenging times,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added.

He emphasized that the President’s decision reflects his sensitivity to the economic realities facing the country and his commitment to efficient resource management.

Mr Azure had alluded that the businessman owed a huge sum to Merchant Bank (now Universal Merchant Bank, UMB), which contributed to its eventual collapse in 2013.

The claim, which was subsequently contested by Ibrahim Mahama, prompted the investigative journalist to respond to the businessman, maintaining that the information in his book was accurate.

The post, titled…, “RETRACTION AND APOLOGY,” the journalist wrote:

“In providing a background to the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) and the circumstances under which its new owners acquired it in 2013, I mentioned the controversy that arose when it emerged that one of the big debtors of the erstwhile Merchant Bank was Mr. Mahama.

“The fact is that the $28 million debt I referenced was owed by his company, Engineers and Planners Company Limited, the legal entity, and not Mr. Mahama personally.

“Consequently, I retract the said reference to Ibrahim Mahama as the debtor and apologise for any adverse effect that may have been occasioned by said publication.”

Manasseh Azure pushes back against Ibrahim Mahama’s alleged legal threat

Award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has refuted media reports claiming that Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers and Planners, issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding the removal of certain pages from Awuni’s recent book.

The book, The President Ghana Never Got, has ignited debate over its portrayal of the 2013 sale of Merchant Bank, now Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), and Ibrahim Mahama’s alleged role in the transaction.

In his book, Azure detailed the sale of Merchant Bank to the private equity firm Fortiz, describing the process as controversial.

He highlighted that while FirstRand Bank of South Africa had offered GH₵176 million for a 75% stake, Fortiz secured 90% of the bank for only GH₵90 million. Azure also pointed out that the bank’s financial difficulties were partly due to significant debts owed by Engineers and Planners, the company owned by Ibrahim Mahama, who is also the brother of former President John Dramani Mahama.

Following the publication, media reports surfaced alleging that Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers demanded a retraction and apology from Azure, insisting that the claims made in the book were false.

However, in a social media post, Manasseh Azure clarified the situation: “I have received calls about the news that Ibrahim Mahama has given me seven days to delete pages 89 and 90 of my books because the information is inaccurate. That is not accurate. Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers have written to me concerning a paragraph of the book in the chapter on the economy. That paragraph says Ibrahim Mahama was indebted to Merchant Bank when it was sold in 2013.

“His lawyers say it was a company owned by Ibrahim Mahama, Engineers and Planners, which owed the bank, not Ibrahim Mahama. I have forwarded their demands to my lawyers, and the matter will be addressed soon.”

  • No one has told me to delete pages of my book concerning Ibrahim Mahama – Manasseh

No one has told me to delete pages of my book concerning Ibrahim Mahama – Manasseh

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has refuted claims that he has been given a seven-day ultimatum to delete sections of his latest book that allegedly tarnish the reputation of businessman Ibrahim Mahama.

According to Manasseh, these reports are inaccurate, though he acknowledges that Mr. Mahama’s lawyers have raised concerns about specific content in the book.

The book in question, The President Ghana Never Got, addresses several issues, including the controversial sale of Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), formerly Merchant Bank, in 2013.

Manasseh writes that the state-owned bank, which was sold to private equity firm Fortiz, faced difficulties partly due to large debts owed by Ibrahim Mahama at the time.

In the book, it is noted that South Africa’s FirstRand Bank had offered GH₵176 million for 75% of the bank’s shares, while Fortiz secured 90% of the shares for only GH₵90 million. Manasseh highlights that a key debtor of the bank was Mr. Mahama, which, according to him, contributed to the bank’s financial problems.

In response to this claim, Mr. Mahama, through his solicitors, demanded a retraction and an apology from Manasseh. However, contrary to media reports, Manasseh has denied receiving any directive to delete portions of the book.

“I have received calls about the news that Ibrahim Mahama has given me seven days to delete pages 89 and 90 of my book because the information is inaccurate. That is not accurate,” Manasseh stated.

Manasseh went on to explain that the correspondence from Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers specifically addressed a paragraph in the chapter on the economy, which references Mr. Mahama’s indebtedness to Merchant Bank. The lawyers clarified that it was not Ibrahim Mahama himself who owed the bank, but rather his company, Engineers & Planners.

“Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers have written to me concerning a paragraph of the book… His lawyers say it was a company owned by Ibrahim Mahama, Engineers and Planners, which owed the bank, not Ibrahim Mahama,” Manasseh explained. He added, “I have forwarded their demands to my lawyers, and the matter will be addressed soon.”

Manasseh Azure Awuni has stood by the claims in his book, expressing confidence in the accuracy of the information he published. He assured the public that the issue is being handled professionally by his legal team and that he will address the concerns raised by Mr. Mahama’s solicitors appropriately.

The situation has drawn public interest, as Manasseh’s book touches on sensitive issues related to the business dealings of prominent figures in the country.

Despite the legal back-and-forth, the investigative journalist remains resolute in his position, and the matter is expected to proceed through the legal process.

  • My lawyers are addressing Ibrahim Mahama’s concerns about my latest book – Manasseh

My lawyers are addressing Ibrahim Mahama’s concerns about my latest book – Manasseh

Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has clarified reports regarding a legal dispute between himself and the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers & Planners, Ibrahim Mahama.

This follows demands from Mr. Mahama’s legal team, which alleged that Manasseh’s latest book, The President Ghana Never Got, contains false claims that tarnish the businessman’s reputation.

The controversy centers on a chapter of the book that delves into the sale of Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), formerly known as Merchant Bank, in 2013.

The chapter suggests that the sale of the state-owned bank to the private equity firm Fortiz was mired in controversy. Manasseh‘s book points out that South Africa’s FirstRand Bank had offered GH₵176 million for 75% of the bank’s shares, but Fortiz secured the deal for just GH₵90 million in exchange for 90% of the shares.

A key factor, according to the book, was the substantial debt owed to Merchant Bank by Ibrahim Mahama, which, Manasseh claims, contributed to the bank’s financial difficulties at the time. This connection between Mr. Mahama’s debts and the bank’s struggles has become a focal point of the current legal concerns.

Responding to the accusations, Mr. Mahama’s solicitors are demanding a retraction and an apology, asserting that the information presented in the book is false. They clarified that the debt in question was owed by Engineers & Planners, a company owned by Ibrahim Mahama, and not by Mr. Mahama personally.

In addressing these concerns, Manasseh Azure Awuni has stood by the content of his book, stating that he has forwarded the demands to his legal team for review.

“I have received calls about the news that Ibrahim Mahama has given me seven days to delete pages 89 and 90 of my book because the information is inaccurate. That is not accurate,” Manasseh explained in a statement. He added that the actual request from Mr. Mahama’s lawyers involved the correction of a specific paragraph in the chapter on the economy, which states that Ibrahim Mahama was indebted to Merchant Bank at the time of its sale.

“Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers have written to me concerning a paragraph of the book… His lawyers say it was a company owned by Ibrahim Mahama, Engineers and Planners, which owed the bank, not Ibrahim Mahama. I have forwarded their demands to my lawyers, and the matter will be addressed soon,” he further clarified.

Manasseh did not provide additional details on how his legal team would respond but assured that the issue would be handled professionally.

Ibrahim Mahama designs London’s Barbican Centre with Ghanaian fabric ‘batakari’

Ghanaian artist known for his innovative works, Ibrahim Mahama has brought a touch of Ghanaian culture to the heart of the United Kingdom.

His latest masterpiece, “Purple Hibiscus,” has transformed the iconic Barbican Centre in London into a vibrant display of art and heritage.

Using magenta fabric crafted from traditional Ghanaian robes called batakari, Mahama’s artwork spans an impressive 2,000 square metres across the Barbican Centre.

The fabric, adorned with intricate hand embroidery from over 130 batakaris, reflects the rich cultural significance of these garments, once worn by Ghanaian kings and cherished by families for generations.

Collaborating with skilled craftspeople from Tamale, Mahama orchestrated a meticulous process of weaving and stitching the colossal panels by hand.

The pieces, collected through exchange and barter from communities across Northern Ghana, were assembled with such scale that Mahama rented the Tamale football stadium for the sewing process, involving hundreds of local women.

“Purple Hibiscus,” named after Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s acclaimed book, has garnered global attention, with coverage from esteemed outlets like the BBC.

This artistic feat not only celebrates Ghanaian heritage but also highlights Mahama’s reputation for turning everyday materials into priceless artworks.
This exhibition adds another chapter to Mahama’s legacy of giving Ghanaian culture a prominent global stage.

In 2023, he acquired old trains for his Red Clay Studios, showcasing his ongoing commitment to transforming overlooked materials into profound artistic statements.

  • BBC’s full article on Ibrahim Mahama

BBC’s full article on Ibrahim Mahama

London’s grey and angular Barbican Centre is now a sea of pink – its frontage covered in cloth that billows in the breeze as if dancing.

“It started as a joke,” visual artist Ibrahim Mahama tells the BBC.

“When I was invited here, I was looking at the grey concrete and the grey weather. I thought, why not use something more colourful as a contrast?”

So the 37-year-old turned to local experts in northern Ghana near his studio in Tamale, who weaved and sewed this project on a colossal scale.

During three months, a team of 1,000 people hand-stitched 2,000 square metres of striped cotton, before decorating it with 130 traditional smocks known as batakari.

Purple Hibiscus is the result of that toil. It is also a nod to London’s famous rag trade – the city’s fabric merchants, tailors and dressmakers who once dominated the area where the Barbican Centre now stands.

Ghana too has its own long and rich history of textiles – perhaps best known for its bright, patterned kente cloth.

After independence from the UK in 1957, the state initially invested in the garment and cloth industries but they later went into decline because of economic turmoil and cheap Chinese imports.

Textiles have made a comeback in recent years – despite a struggling economy – and Ghanaian fabrics are desired for their high quality and interesting designs.

“I always say that doctors repair the body, but artists fill the body with the soul. And in any society, art is the soul that drives it – to evolve in a more conscious way,” says Mahama.

Community for him is key – his studio is open to visitors and he plans to open an art school for children.

Purple Hibiscus and Mahama’s other large-scale public art installations reference the power of collective labour and the memories that textiles contain.

Jute sacks – used to transport cocoa, rice and charcoal – were draped over the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. It was Mahama’s way of exploring the history of trade in commodities and globalisation.

His latest project at the Barbican showcases a typically Ghanaian item he has been collecting since 2012.

Batakari – also called smocks or binŋmah in Mahama’s Dagbani language – are tunics made from hand-woven strips of cotton then sewn together to create a distinctive striped pattern.

They originated in northern Ghana but are now worn throughout the country and the diaspora by men and women, on formal and informal occasions.

Some are passed down the generations – decades-old and unwashed – so “they contain the sweat, the economic struggles, the personal struggles, and the spirit of people”, says Mahama.

“I like decay quite a lot. When something is at that point of its life, I always think that is when it is beginning to live more.”

Among the batakari on show in Purple Hibiscus are those donated by old chiefs. Others came from ordinary families who would trade Mahama their old ones for a new one, and others still were specially commissioned.

Many bear yellowish stains of sweat – and in some cases, urine. Some families would not give Mahama their batakari until they had put urine on it because they believe that the family’s past, present and future is contained in the decades-old garment.

“They believe that when they do that, it somehow desacralises the material and then the soul will somehow escape away from it,” explains Mahama.

“As an artist, I think it’s even more interesting aesthetically.”

Mahama is in some ways more focused on the process and experience of creating art than the final product.

Crafting Purple Hibiscus was so big a task that the team worked in Tamale’s sports stadium, built for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament.

Bringing the textile creation over to London to drape on the Barbican’s post-World War Two brutalist forms was a feat that makes Mahama proud.

“I thought what could be more beautiful than creating this relationship between these two labour forms – one that is coming from a post-war era, and then one that is coming from the 21st Century but also steeped in traditions and histories of the pre-colonial era.”

Today it is an extraordinary sight, especially when a blue sky sets off the pink just so.

The billowing forms that batakari take when their wearers dance have always fascinated Mahama, who says they create a kind of optical effect.

It seems to me that, when the wind blows in a certain way, Purple Hibiscus is performing its own special dance.

Look, I was just an ordinary girl from Tamale, a local girl. I remember that very day, we were fasting. We were actually in the fasting season. I was fasting.

You are doing very well with your music. It’s just that you don’t have support. I want you to try and go to him by yourself. Go and tell that man to support you’,” she narrated in an interview with Prince Hamdan.

“When I got closer to the man after the security left me, he was going for dinner and they had called for prayers for us to break our fast. So, he said,’… let’s go and have dinner together’. This is something if somebody told me that my whole life, I could get such an opportunity I wouldn’t believe,” she said.

He added that her actions after taking the money made Mahama and his family crack up.

“Look, I removed my scarf and used it to cover the money. And it’s an achievement for me that I got him and his family laughing. Because my actions naturally proved to him that I needed this and I am not a slay queen. The man was so happy of my actions. And I loved the fact that he could laugh out of my actions.”

Lithium mining: We skipped Ibrahim Mahama, Despite Group for an Australian company that doesn’t care about us – Asani Tanoh

Political analyst, Yaw Asani Tanoh, is displeased with government’s decision to issue a fifteen-year mining lease to Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, enabling them to commence lithium mining in Ewoyaa, within the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

In an interview on Neat FM, Yaw Asani Tanoh expressed his concern while noting that government could have found a number of local businessmen and companies to collude and ensure the mining of the mineral resource.

He noted that the likes of Ghanaian Businessman Ibrahim Mahama, Despite Group Media could have been engaged to pull their resources to carry out this intiative.

“I pray that the media will take it up to scrutinize the lithium agreement. If there is a need to stop, then we stop it.
Just yesterday we discovered lithium, we have gone to give it to Australia. Couldn’t we have said this lithium, we know the value of it, because in the whole world, the document shows us that they will set up a lithium value addition factory here. If that is done, it will mean that in the whole world, Ghana is the third country that has discovered Lithium.

“So why didn’t we put businessmen in Ghana together, like Ibrahim Mahama, he is into mining, Despite Group of Companies, other big sharks, and say we are putting this into your hands. Find partners and put in place the necessary factories to ensure we add value to the lithium.”

For Mr Tanoh, foreign companies do not have the country’s welfare at heart compared to locals, who have shown their generosity to individuals affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.

“You have gone to give it to Australia, when the Akosombo Dam spillage flooded communities, where is Australia. I just can’t think far. We are belittling ourselves indicating that unless a foreigner comes to do things for us, especially mining.
These foreign companies at the end of the day go to Ibrahim Mahama and the rest to lease trucks, bulldozer etc or even sell come contract areas to him. So what is the point in seeding our mineral resources that we can mine by ourselves, the monies remaining here for development but give it to somebody else,” he stated.

He has also called on the media to thoroughly probe the terms of agreement between the government and Barari DV Ghana Limited that has been permitted to engage in lithium production in the country.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has emphasized that the agreed terms provide the Government and the people of Ghana with greater value in the mining of lithium.

He highlighted key aspects of the lease, including:

    • An increased royalty rate from the standard 5% to 10%.

A royalty rate refers to the percentage of revenue or profit that one party (the licensee) agrees to pay to another party (the licensor) in exchange for the right to use a specific asset or intellectual property.

    • An increase in the state’s free-carried interest in the mining operation from 10% to 13%.

Free-carried interest refers to a portion of ownership or equity interest in an investment that an individual or entity holds without having to make any financial contributions or bear any of the associated risks.

    • The acquisition of an additional 6% in the mining operation by the government through the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF).
    • The government will also secure a 3.06% stake in the company’s parent entity, listed on the Australian and London Stock Exchanges.
    • The requirement for the company to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to allow Ghanaian entities, such as pension funds and individuals, to participate in the business.
    • The commitment of the company to contribute 1% of its revenue to a Community Development Fund, which will be used for the development of communities affected by its operations.
    • The company’s obligation is to establish a chemical plant for lithium processing. If the company is unable to establish such a plant, it will provide its lithium to third-party chemical plants in the country, promoting job creation and development in mining communities and across Ghana.

After extensive consultations and approval by Cabinet, a policy for the exploitation and management of green minerals, including lithium, was endorsed by Parliament and integrated into the mining lease issued to the company.

Flashback: Ibrahim Mahama spent GH350,000 on two locomotives

In a noteworthy event, the artist Ibrahim Mahama acquired some of Ghana’s ancient trains from various locations across the country and moved them to the Northern Region as a valuable addition to his collection at the Red Clay Studios.

During a discussion on Caleb Kudah’s YouTube channel, Ibrahim Mahama disclosed the process behind obtaining these old trains. He revealed that they were purchased from scrap dealers and then meticulously restored and transported from Sekondi to Tamale in the Northern Region.

The artist shared that the acquisition of two locomotives cost him GH¢350,000. He emphasized that the task of lifting these 100-year-old trains was an arduous undertaking that demanded significant time, dedication, and careful planning to achieve successfully.

Ibrahim Mahama expressed his gratitude to the team of individuals who provided their assistance in transporting the trains to their new location at the Red Clay Studios, where they now stand as a part of his remarkable collection.

“It took about four days to pack the trains and an extra three to four days driving the locomotive trains to Tamale. We are currently restoring the trains at the Red Clay Studios and that is the core part of the entire project as we seek to breathe life back into things that one would not ordinarily assume can have a sense of value,” he shared.

Renowned for his extraordinary talent in transforming discarded items into captivating art, Ibrahim Mahama has earned global recognition.

Utilizing materials such as sacks and old sewing machines, among others, he has carved a niche for himself, not only promoting Ghana but also infusing his work with historical significance.

In the year 2021, Ibrahim Mahama once again demonstrated his visionary approach to art by purchasing some of Ghana’s old planes. With these planes, he embarked on a grand project to establish a museum and community space in Jenakpeng, situated in the Northern Region.

This initiative promises to preserve the planes’ history while providing a platform for communal engagement and appreciation of art.

His company provides rental services to major mining companies operating not only in Ghana but also in other African countries, as well as serving road contractors. Upon his return to Ghana from England in 1997, Mahama noticed the pressing need for equipment in the country’s mining and construction industries. Recognizing the opportunity, he ventured into the equipment rental space to meet this demand.

His determination paid off when he secured a significant sub-contract to supply trucks to Razel-Bec for the construction of the Ako Adjei Interchange in Accra, marking a pivotal moment in his entrepreneurial journey.

“It is interesting. We didn’t even own the number of trucks that the contract required at the time but we still made do,” he told Emy Africa.

Engineers and Planners, founded by Ibrahim Mahama, has achieved remarkable success over the past three decades and has become the largest wholly indigenous mining and construction contracting company in West Africa, as well as one of the largest in Africa. Employing over 3000 people, the company has made significant contributions to the region’s economy.

Taking inspiration from renowned entrepreneurs like Aliko Dangote, Mahama has diversified his investments, venturing into agriculture with Asutuare Poultry Farms, a thriving enterprise that produces hundreds of thousands of eggs and 10,000 live broilers daily. He also owns Man Bosch Ghana (MBG) Ltd, a prominent retailer of MAN trucks and other heavy-duty equipment.

Not content with his achievements, Mahama launched Dzata Cement, becoming Ghana’s first wholly-indigenous cement manufacturer. The factory, which began construction in 2011, is expected to create 1,200 direct jobs and has a projected production capacity of 2 million tonnes of cement per year.

For his remarkable entrepreneurial exploits, Mahama has received worldwide recognition, including the prestigious 2018 African Achievers’ Award in London, where he was honored as the African Industrialist of the Year 2018. He has also been a recipient of the EMY Africa award.

Born in Piase, in Ghana’s Northern Region, Mahama hails from a prominent family background, with his father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, being the country’s first Northern Regional Minister under Kwame Nkrumah. His mother, Joyce Tamakloe, is from Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana, and he is the brother of Ghana’s former President, John Mahama. Despite his family’s background, Mahama attributes his success to taking risks, continuous learning, and establishing the right partnerships.

After completing his secondary education at Ghana Senior High School in Tamale, Northern Region, Mahama pursued further studies at the College of North London in the United Kingdom. He gained work experience at a property development company in London before returning to Ghana to embark on his entrepreneurial journey.

In addition to his business ventures, Mahama co-founded the Joyce Tamakloe Cancer Foundation, which raises funds for hospitals to support the fight against cancer in Ghana.

  • The 17-year-old innovator building moving excavators from local materials

A young man with excellent potential for equipment ideas has been receiving guidance from businessman and entrepreneur Ibrahim Mahama.

The business entrepreneur saw Master Solomon Atimbiri, 17, when one of his videos went viral this past weekend, attracting his attention. Atimbiri is from the Upper East Region but currently resides in Kumasi.

Ibrahim Mahama subsequently made the long trip to meet the young person in order to start the first of many mentoring sessions with him and to examine some of the other innovations he had on show.

According to details shared by the office of Ibrahim Mahama, the fact that the young inventor was able to build a moving excavator and other trucks by using locally available materials made it easy for the businessman to show great interest in grooming him.

With this, Ibrahim Mahama will provide Solomon Atimbiri with all the needed support he requires to get him to realize his dreams.

It added that the young man will also permanently join Ibrahim Mahama’s company, Engineers and Planners.

“He has been attached to a team of local and expatriate engineers. He will be given practical training whenever school is on break till he completes school.

‘He will join the company permanently and will be working with a team of professional engineers after completion of school. Some of the current engineers working within Mr Ibrahim Mahama’s firm were also discovered as raw talent and developed to become professional engineers.”

  • Investors are not only whites, there are huge talents in Ghana – Sam Jonah

A renowned business executive, Sam Jonah, is of the belief that Ghana has the capacity to produce entrepreneurs who will invest in the country’s business ecosystem.

According to him, the change Ghana seeks can be achieved if it eschews the mentality that investors can only be foreigners.

He cites a number of successful businesses that have sprouted from talented youth in Ghana, which if given the right support can push the country toward its desired direction.

Sam Jonah made the comments when he spoke on GTV’s BBUM show on September 26, 2022.

“Unfortunately, it reflects in the attitudes of governments and it doesn’t matter how far back you go to think that investors are whites and they are foreigners, if we start believing that all of us are investors in the country, there are people who have built a chain of hotels, there are people who have built radio stations, the likes of Yussif Ibrahim, Ibrahim Mahama.

“There are huge people who are hugely talented entrepreneurs, who, given the opportunity, given the encouragement, the incentives who by the way are easily given to foreigners, the economy will be different,” he said.

Sam Jonah has also bemoaned the low ownership stake of Ghanaians in major business firms in the country.

According to him, retention of profit in the country can help solve a majority of the economic challenges the country is facing.
