Affectionately known as “the lion” among fellow players, Barakat had played for the national team and various clubs in Gaza, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

He began his professional career in 2015 with Shabab Khanyounis, where he achieved the milestone of becoming the first player in Gaza to score 100 goals with a single team.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 31,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

The Palestinian Football Association has reported that 158 athletes, including 91 soccer players from different divisions, were among those killed.

The war began when Hamas-led militants reportedly entered Israel on Oct. 7, resulting in casualties and hostage-taking.

The first relief is the sound of the phone ringing. Then comes the most enjoyable noise in the entire world.

Sanaa Al-Araj and her 18-year-old daughter, Karmel, who live in Ramallah in the West Bank, always keep track of the war news happening 83 kilometers away in Gaza.

They always try to call their cousin Hadeel Abu Hassanen, who lives in Gaza with other family members, at least once a day.

Hadeel tells them that last night was very difficult. “There was a bombing that happened very near to us. ”

Sanaa is very concerned about her cousin Mohammed. He can’t move because an Israeli airstrike hurt him badly. His wife is going to have a baby soon but she can’t get medical help.

Sanaa says we can’t sleep easily. Every day, we hear about family members and friends who have been killed.

She is worried about her 93-year-old mother, Sabha, who has depression and has to deal with constant bombardment.
