I almost committed suicide because I was broke -Iyanya

Nigerian singer, Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya, has spoken about how going bankrupt in 2020 nearly led to his suicide.

Iyanya, narrating his ordeal in the latest episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, said he lost his house and was staying in a hotel but couldn’t afford the hotel bills anymore at some point.

According to him, this was when he was taken to court by his former management, Temple Management Company, for allegedly “stealing” a car belonging to the company.

He said, “I was in court for a long time, I didn’t do shows. I couldn’t do anything. You know, when you stopped doing show, you now have to fall back on your savings. But when you are popping, that inflow [of money] is different, the way you spend is different from the way you spend whatever you saved. So, I felt it.

“I got to a point where I was like, mehn, I need to start touring. That was a crazy period for me. Guess what, two days after my last court case, COVID-19 started. I was stalked. I was in a hotel. My house was gone. I was in the hotel for a very long time. It got to one point, I couldn’t pay for the hotel bills anymore.

“The owner of the hotel is such a great human being. I have never seen a such an amazing human being like that. He allowed me stay there. His name is Alaba. He allowed me stay there for over a year. COVID literally caught up with me there. So, imagine not doing shows. Not touring for over a year, no inflow, and you are in court for the whole year. And then finally, it’s looking like the court case is finishing, the lockdown.

I was in that hotel throughout the lockdown. I almost committed suicide. The manager stopped me one time. All of that stuff. Madness, man.”

He explained that this stems from cheating allegations peddled against him by a lot of ladies including Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson.

“I’m still single because it’s hard for anybody to believe what I say,” he said.

The actor on various occasions has been labelled as a cheat. It was all over the internet that he was dating Yvonne Nelson, however, the relationship ended abruptly due to claims by Yvonne that he had cheated on her.

The much-talked-about romance between the Kukere master, Iyanya, and Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson, hit the rocks in 2015 after the pair began dating in July 2012 and were spotted together at several functions.

Yvonne made more revelations in her memoir “I am not Yvonne Nelson”, disclosing that the musician cheated on her with Nigerian actress Tonto Dikeh.

I made an endorsement video for Yvonne’s book, but I didn’t know I was in it – Iyanya

When popular Nigerian musician Iyanya was approached to create an endorsement video for Yvonne Nelson‘s book, he saw it as an opportunity to support the work of an ex-lover who is still a friend. Little did he know that there was a ‘little’ surprise in the book for him.

The singer born Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, has revealed that prior to actress Yvonne Nelson launching her book, she informed him about the decision, however, what she did not disclose was the role he was playing in the book.

“She buzzed [called] me and said she was launching her book and she needed an [endorsement] video for the book which I recorded for her. [But] I didn’t know I was in the book. I [recorded the video] because obviously we were cool. So when the book came out that’s how I knew I was in the book,” he said.

Prior to Yvonne Nelson launching the book, she had posted videos of friends and loved ones, including Medikal, Mercy Johnson, Obrafour, Reggie Rockstone, John Dumelo, etc giving good testimonies about herself and the book. Iyanya claims to have recorded the video, however, it cannot be found on Yvonne’s instagram page, like the others.

Speaking on how the news reached him, Inyanya who disclosed that he was initially hurt about the claims in the book about him, said he learnt about it from a doctor friend.

“I was sleeping and I just woke up to missed calls and all of that and then I called one of my doctor friends and he was like ‘No way! You’ve not seen the book.’ And that’s how I knew about it.

So I now called my guys and they said that yeah she [Yvonne] wrote a book and put my name in it,” he recalled. “At first I was hurt, I won’t lie about that,” he added.

Yvonne Nelson’s memoir dubbed ‘I am not Yvonne Nelson’ which was released on this year’s  Father’s day, has become a subject of controversy following various claims in the book.

  • Court rules on Iyanyas car theft case

Nigerian popular musician, Iyanya Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya on Thursday was granted bail in the sum of N20 million by an Igbosere High Court in Lagos over alleged car theft.

Iyanya, who rose to fame after winning the first season of Project Fame West Africa is facing a count charge of stealing.

The charge was preferred by the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police.

In her ruling, Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, said: “I have perused the affidavit and the counter-affidavit of the parties; there is a prima facie case of criminal conversion against him.

She directed that the bail should be perfected within the next seven days or otherwise it shall be revoked”.

She said, “However, there is nothing to show that the defendant will interfere with the proceedings of this case and nothing to show that he will jump bail if granted.

“Bail is, therefore, granted to the defendant in the sum of N20 million with one surety in like sum”.

She ordered that the surety must have a landed property in Lagos and possess its certificate of occupancy.

The judge then adjourned the case until May 27 for trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports Prosecution counsel, SP Chukwu Agw filed a 13-paragraph counter-affidavit, urging the court not to grant bail to the defendant.

The SFU alleged that Iyanya dishonestly converted to his personal use or of another person, a black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado jeep marked MAVINIY, with chassis No. JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and engine No. 2TR1385954.

It said that the vehicle belonged to the complainant, Temple Management Company Ltd. represented by a lawyer, Ayodeji Olomojobi.

The SFU alleged that Iyanya committed the offence sometime in September 2018, in contravention of Section 285(10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

According to blogger, Linda Ikeji, Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile of the Igbosere High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday, February 27, 2020, ordered Iyanya to produce a surety in like sum, who should also have landed property in Lagos with a Certificate of Occupancy.

She also warned the music star that if his bail conditions are not perfected in seven days, it will be revoked.

“I have perused the affidavit and the counter-affidavit of the parties; there is a prima facie case of criminal conversion against him,” Justice Okikiolu-Ighile said.

” However, there is nothing to show that the defendant will interfere with the proceedings of this case and nothing to show that he will jump bail if granted bail. Bail is therefore granted to the defendant in the sum of N20 million with one surety in the like sum.”

The case has been adjourned till May 27 and 28 for trial. It would be recalled that Iyanya was arraigned in court a few weeks ago for alleged car theft.

    The arraignment

The report says that the police filed the one-count charge marked LD/9024c/2019, against the singer on March 15, 2019.

Iyanya failed to appear in court for arraignment, despite allegedly being served with the charge and hearing notice, following which the arraignment was adjourned six times.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile threatened to invoke the power of the court after the music star refused to show up in court.

On Tuesday, February 4, Iyanya showed up in court where the charge was read before him.

The court heard that the defendant allegedly dishonestly converted to his use or of another person, a Black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked MAVINIY, with Chassis and Engine numbers JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and 2TR1385954.

The SUV in question is said to belong to The Temple Management Company Ltd. After the charges were read, Iyanya pleaded not guilty. The prosecuting counsel, however, prayed that the court remand the singer in prison custody
