  • James Gunn responds to Superman backlash, says DC Studios choices are “best for the story”

The post-James Gunn responds to Superman backlash, says DC Studios choices are “best for the story” appeared first on Consequence.

James Gunn has addressed the backlash over his decision for Henry Cavill to not return as Superman.

The DC Studios co-head addressed the “uproarious and unkind” response via a series of tweets in which Gunn promised his decision-making for the future of the DC Extended Universe would not be affected by “disrespectful outcry.”

“Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years,” Gunn wrote, on the behalf of co-CEO Peter Safran and himself.

Though he doesn’t mention Superman by name, the character debuted in the comic book Actions Comics #1, published in 1938.

Adding that “no one loves to be harassed or called names,” Gunn continued, “Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions.

“We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us. But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.”

Cavill announced his return as Superman just one day ahead of Gunn being announced as co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DC Studios in late October. Gunn is splitting duties with Safran, who has not only worked on DC films such as Aquaman and Shazam!but produced Gunn’s DCEU projects The Suicide Squad and its Peacemaker HBO Max spinoff.

Less than two months later, however, Cavill revealed he was no longer reprising the role. Gunn confirmed the actor’s exit, saying the “initial stages” of the next Superman film will focus on “an earlier part” of the superhero’s life.

Cavill’s Superman isn’t the only casualty of Gunn’s new direction for DC Studios. Gunn also nixed plans for a third Wonder Woman movie from director Patty Jenkins.

  • Kevin Feige reacts to James Gunn becoming co-head of DC studios: ‘I’ll be first in line to see anything he does’

Kevin Feige is apparently pumped about James Gunn’s new gig.

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed Gunn and producer Peter Safran will co-head DC Studios—a newly formed division that’ll house DC Universe film, TV, and animation projects. Feige was asked about the move during Wednesday’s red carpet event for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

“Well, he has got a lot of work to do for Marvel between now and May, which he’s well aware of,” the Marvel boss told Deadline. “But after that, I’ll be first in line to see anything he does.”

He made similar comments while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, insisting he was happy about Gunn’s new role, despite it being at one of Marvel’s biggest competitors.

“I speak to James almost every day. We have a wonderful thing called the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming out,” he said. “We have a wonderful thing called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in May. How he’ll have any time to work on DC until May I don’t know, but once he does have the time I’ll be very excited. I’ll be first in line.”

Gunn had worked with Marvel on a number of projects, including the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The filmmaker will reportedly oversee DC Studios’ creative direction, while Safran will helm the business and production sides. Gunn confirmed the appointment via Instagram, telling fans he was “excited to be here.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will premiere Nov. 25 on Disney+, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.

  • James Gunn, Peter Safran tapped to lead newly formed DC studios

Warner Bros. has enlisted a pair of industry veterans to lead DC Studios.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios, a newly formed division that will replace DC Films, will be led by filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran.

The pair will co-head the studio’s film, TV and animation efforts, which is home to superheroes such as Wonder Woman and Superman. Gunn and Safran will assume their new positions on Nov. 1.

The decision comes just a week after DC Films head Walter Hamada’s exit.

“DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe,” Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav said in a statement. “Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling.”

Gunn and Safran will report to Zaslav, President and Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Discovery. Meanwhile, Gunn will focus on the creative side, while Safran will head the business and production side of things.

“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” the pair said in a joint statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.

Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent.

We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”

Gunn has notably directed both Guardians of The Galaxy films for Marvel, as well as the franchise’s upcoming third entry. He also helmed DC’s The Suicide Squad as well as its Peacemaker series.

Gunn confirmed the news of his new position on Instagram.
