Concerned vehicle importers threaten to storm Jubilee House over manipulation of vehicle ages to skip port penalties

A planned demonstration at the Jubilee House has been announced by a group known as the Concerned Importers of Vehicles following claims that the ages of imported vehicles are being manipulated at Ghana’s ports.

The group says gaps in enforcement continue to allow some importers to alter the stated ages of vehicles brought in from Japan and Dubai in order to avoid penalties on over-aged cars.

Speaking to the media on January 25, 2026, a leading member of the group, Fredericka Ackah, said importers were assured last year that the ages of vehicles from Japan and Dubai would no longer be reduced, but some individuals are still benefiting from the practice.

“Last year, in 2025, we were told that importers bringing in cars from Japan and Dubai should not have the ages reduced, but some people are still doing it. Recently, a friend of mine imported vehicles from Japan; the ages of some were reduced while others were not,” she said.

She said the lack of consistency has caused uncertainty among vehicle importers and created opportunities for corrupt practices.

Ackah cautioned that the group would take the matter to the Presidency if the issue remains unresolved.

“The Commissioner should take action or we will storm the Jubilee House to report what is going on at the Ports and Harbours,” she stated.

She claimed that vehicles produced in 2007 or 2008 are sometimes recorded as 2011 or 2013, enabling importers to avoid penalties for over-aged cars.

The group has therefore urged the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority to strengthen inspections at the ports to stop the practice.

“There is a lot of confusion among importers. If the age can be reduced, people will take their vehicles to others who can do it for them just to dodge the over-age penalty. DVLA should be vigilant and ensure that any vehicle whose age has been reduced is thoroughly checked,” Ackah said.

She noted that the group possesses documents supporting their claim that the ages of some imported vehicles have been altered.

Ghana currently prohibits the import of salvaged vehicles and used cars over ten years old. This restriction is outlined in the Customs (Amendment) Act, 2020, which Parliament passed in March 2020 and which was signed into law by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on April 30, 2020.

Under Section 154 (5) of the Act, the ban took effect six months after the presidential assent, starting in October 2020.

The rule is intended to encourage a viable market for vehicles manufactured or assembled in Ghana. It also offers import-duty incentives to companies that set up local vehicle production or assembly plants, supporting the government’s goals of industrialisation and job creation.

In 2024, the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), alongside the Association of Customs House Agents of Ghana, Freight Forwarders Association ofGhana, and Customs Brokers Association of Ghana, in collaboration with various trade groups and manufacturers, are protesting against what they label as exploitative actions by shipping lines operating in the country.

Also participating are the Ghana Union of Traders Association, EXIM Frozen Foods Association of Ghana, and the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana.

They are marching through Tema, submitting petitions to the Ministries of Transport, Trade, Finance, and other key bodies, urging immediate regulatory intervention.

GIFF asserts that these unregulated practices have severely harmed the logistics industry and the broader Ghanaian economy.

“Shipping lines have operated with impunity for too long, imposing unjustifiable costs that harm freight forwarders, importers, exporters, and ultimately consumers,” said a spokesperson for GIFF.

The group highlighted that these charges, when combined with delays and inefficiencies, inflate the cost of doing business and contribute to Ghana’s weakened foreign exchange position.

The protest also seeks to address a practice in which shipping lines, contrary to the Customs Act of 2015, are engaging in customs brokerage, sidelining freight forwarders and monopolizing services in a manner that the association views as anti-competitive.

Some of the clearing agents told 3news.com that many of their mates have folded up with many more of the getting out of business.

“The shipping lines now engage our clients behind us making us lose our business”.

The group has served notice of another massive protest towards the presidency in 14 days if their concerns are not addressed.

Accra: Major roads, Jubilee House route, remain unlit despite minister’s promise to fix streetlights

Several major roads in Accra remain in darkness, raising safety concerns among residents and motorists despite Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloos pledge to restore 70% of the region’s streetlights.

Following her swearing-in, the minister assured the public that efforts were underway to address the widespread streetlight failures, emphasizing the importance of improved visibility for security and road safety.

She noted that inadequate lighting has contributed to rising crime rates and road accidents, particularly in high-traffic areas.

She committed to fixing 70% of the malfunctioning streetlights within her first 50 days in office. However, progress has been slow, leaving many communities frustrated over continued vulnerability to theft and other security threats.

Notably, even the primary road leading to Jubilee House, the seat of government, remains unlit, raising concerns about the urgency and prioritization of the minister’s promise.

The persistence of these lighting issues has sparked public debate on the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to enhance safety and infrastructure in the capital.

Less than 60 political appointees serve at Jubilee House – Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has indicated that the number of staff at the Presidency is currently below 60, with a similar count for Ministers and their deputies.

He stressed that the government is focused on reducing unnecessary expenditures and reaffirmed the President’s commitment to capping ministerial appointments at 60.

He contrasted this with the 337 political appointees under former President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“If you move from 123/125 ministers to 60 ministers, Mr Speaker, that means that you are going to buy 60 less Land Cruisers. You are going to buy 60 less salon cars. You will need to provide 60 less bungalows. You will need to provide 60 less sets of political aids and research assistants and what have you. Mr Speaker, President Mahama has not limited himself to just reducing the number of ministers. In any event that I speak to you, there are only 56 ministers. And in fact, they are 42 ministers running Ghana as we speak, because deputy ministers have not been approved,” he said.

However, former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, argued that while the number of ministers has decreased, the Presidency remains heavily staffed.

No parade, regional level celebration for 68th Independence Day – Jubilee House

The Jubilee House has announced a scaled-down commemoration of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day, limiting activities to the national and district levels while scrapping regional celebrations.

According to a presidential directive, the main national event will take place at the forecourt of the Presidency without the usual parade or march past by security agencies and schoolchildren.

Regional Ministers have been tasked with ensuring that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) observe the occasion in a similarly toned-down manner.

Despite the scaled-back celebrations, two key events will still be held: the annual commemoration of the 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident and the President’s Special Awards for Children.

    Revised National Activities

The revised program for the national celebration will feature:

A national address by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces

A Guard of Honour mounted by security agencies

    Cultural performances and recitals

  • Jubilee House to host 6th March celebration to cut down govt expenditure

Jubilee House to host 6th March celebration to cut down govt expenditure

President John Dramani Mahama’s government has opted to scale down this year’s Independence Day celebration.

As part of this adjustment, the parade will be moved to Jubilee House to reduce costs.

Addressing journalists, Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed that the practice of rotating the event among regional capitals has been put on hold, citing the GH¢15 million expenditure on the 2023 celebration.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to responsible fiscal management while ensuring the effective execution of its mandate.

Kwakye Ofosu further noted that although the Independence Day event was traditionally held in Accra, recent years have seen an intentional effort to decentralize the celebrations across various regions.

“Whereas the intentions may be noble, President Mahama has asked that the rotational policy be suspended because of the need to scale down, and this has become necessary due to escalating costs. It has been discovered after some review that the rotation imposed additional cost, and therefore, at a time when our national budget is severely constrained due to economic difficulties, it was not going to be sustainable to keep rotating the national celebrations.”

Indeed, if I were to put figures on how much it costs, you would find out that depending on where the celebrations are sent, there are significant cost implications. For instance, the last celebrations held in Ho cost the country a staggering GHS15 million, and every time it has been sent to a different regional capital aside from Accra, we’ve had to bear such cost.

“In the spirit of cutting down on non-essential expenditure, President Mahama has instructed that this rotational policy be suspended. In addition to this, the main celebration, which ordinarily would have taken place in Accra at Independence Square, has become the subject of some rollback.

He highlighted that although the President acknowledges the event’s importance in the nation’s history, prevailing economic difficulties and urgent national needs have necessitated a reassessment of government expenditures.

“He believes that it is entirely possible to hold a modest but significant event to mark this important occasion without breaking the national purse.

Omane Boamah lauds Mahama for maintaining ‘Jubilee House’ name

Defence Minister-designate, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his decision to retain the name “Jubilee House” for Ghana’s presidential palace, describing it as a demonstration of goodwill and commitment to national unity.

Addressing the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, 28 January, Dr Omane Boamah praised President Mahama for choosing not to revert the name to its previous designation, “Flagstaff House.”

“It is by the good nature of President Mahama that he hasn’t changed the name from Jubilee House to Flagstaff House,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing national cohesion over symbolic disputes.

He noted that maintaining the name avoids unnecessary controversy and allows the government to focus on more pressing governance matters.

According to Dr Omane Boamah, this decision reflects the President’s respect for Ghana’s historical evolution while embracing its progress. He highlighted how such choices contribute to fostering inclusivity and bridging divides within the country.

He further expressed that leadership should be centered on what unites the nation rather than what divides it, applauding President Mahama for setting an example in this regard.

Dr Omane Boamah concluded by expressing confidence that such thoughtful governance would continue to guide the administration, ensuring decisions reflect the collective interests of all Ghanaians.

  • Fake news on social media comes from the Jubilee House – Mahama insists

Fake news on social media comes from the Jubilee House – Mahama insists

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has accused the Jubilee House of orchestrating a campaign of fake news on social media intended to undermine him and his political efforts.

Speaking at a mini-rally in the Asene Manso Akroso constituency in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, Mahama alleged that the seat of government has become the hub of misinformation targeting him and others.

His comments followed a disclaimer issued by the Chief of Akyem Akroso, Nana Kwabena Ofori, who denied reports that he had endorsed NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a recent visit.

Mahama urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and verify information, cautioning them against falling victim to misinformation campaigns as the 2024 elections approach.

“While Nana was speaking, he said journalists should be careful and not misconstrue him. Nana, it is not the journalists; it is the Jubilee House. That is where people are misconstrued. It is called fake news when what you have not said is reported as something you have said.

“It is not the right thing, but they have done it to me, they have done it to you, and a lot of people. So, all fake news on social media comes from the Jubilee House,” he stated.

  • You are mistaken if you think Judiciary is a rubber stamp for Jubilee House decisions – Atta Akyea

You are mistaken if you think Judiciary is a rubber stamp for Jubilee House decisions – Atta Akyea

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta-Akyea, has dismissed claims that the Supreme Court operates as an extension of the Jubilee House, calling such accusations baseless and uninformed.

Atta-Akyea argued that individuals making these allegations demonstrate a lack of understanding of legal principles and the judiciary’s crucial role in a democratic system.

His comments follow the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, a ruling that has drawn criticism and accusations of executive influence on the judiciary.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Saturday, November 16, Atta-Akyea staunchly defended the integrity of the Supreme Court.

He described the justices as highly esteemed and impartial legal experts committed to upholding the rule of law. He further stressed that their rulings are based on sound legal reasoning rather than any form of political allegiance.

“Those who claim that the Supreme Court is merely an extension of the Jubilee House and will rubber-stamp what we want are mistaken,” he stated.

He noted that the recent case showcased the Court’s independence, pointing out that two judges, Justice Lovelace Johnson and Justice Amadu Tanko, had dissented, demonstrating the diversity of thought within the judiciary. “The Supreme Court is a forum of respectable and capable individuals,” he added.

Samuel Atta-Akyea further argued that portraying the Supreme Court as an extension of the executive branch was both misleading and harmful.

He criticised such views as a misunderstanding of the rule of law and warned that they undermined the constitution and the judiciary’s independence.

The debate stems from the Supreme Court’s November 12 ruling, which overturned Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

This decision followed a challenge by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who contended that the Speaker’s declaration was legally unfounded.

In their detailed judgement delivered on November 14, the five justices who supported Afenyo-Markin clarified that a parliamentary seat could only be deemed vacant if an MP officially changes political parties while remaining in Parliament.

Conversely, the two dissenting justices argued that the Supreme Court lacked jurisdiction over the matter, reflecting a notable divergence in legal interpretation regarding the Court’s authority.

‘Donkomi’: 18 excavators, 16 land cruisers sold by Jubilee House staff for GHC68M to Chinese – Report

A startling report has unveiled a major corruption scandal involving the sale of government-owned vehicles and excavators at the Jubilee House, Ghana’s highest office.

According to the report by GhanaNews, 18 excavators and 16 Toyota Land Cruisers were sold by staff at the Jubilee House for a total of GH¢68 million to a Chinese national, Zhang Feng.

The shockingly low prices at which these state assets were sold have drawn widespread condemnation, with the scandal being labeled as “donkomi,” a local term for selling items at bargain-basement prices.

At the center of the controversy is Dominic Oppong Adjei, the Director of Transport and Logistics at the Jubilee House. He is accused of orchestrating the sale of these vehicles, which were allegedly sold at just GH¢2 million per vehicle—a price that has raised serious questions about the integrity of the process. The vehicles, including several models of high-end Toyota Land Cruisers, were sold under the provisions of Section 1348(6) of the Customs (Control and Management) Act, Cap. 15.05, which governs the disposal of goods.

The report reveals that the transactions were conducted with the approval of the Comptroller of Customs and the Ghana Jubilee House, using bid forms as a legal cover. However, the drastically reduced prices have sparked outrage, with critics questioning whether the sales were conducted in the state’s best interest or if they were part of a larger corrupt scheme.

The vehicles involved in the sale have been identified with specific chassis numbers recorded in official documents, including:

    • Toyota Land Cruiser with Chassis No. JTEF411F970037690
    • Toyota Land Cruiser with Chassis No. JTEBE11F300976708
    • Toyota Land Cruiser with Chassis No. JTMAABBEAN4004323
    • Land Cruiser Diesel with Chassis No. GR4879-23
    • Land Cruiser V8 with Chassis No. JTMNY051J5114049809
    • Land Cruiser V8 with Chassis No. JTLBV9F596X241834
    • Land Cruiser – GB1927924
    • Land Cruiser V8 Diesel with Chassis No. JTEBH3FJ605038700

These transactions were reportedly signed and witnessed by Yakubu Mohammed and Clement Wilkinson, implicating them in the scandal as well. The involvement of these officials has led to increased scrutiny of the sale process and the broader management of government assets within the Jubilee House.

    Intermediaries and Cover-ups

The report also highlights the use of intermediaries in the transactions, with several Ghanaian nationals, including some Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs), allegedly serving as fronts to conceal the involvement of the Chinese buyer. This use of intermediaries suggests a deliberate attempt to obscure the true nature of the sales and has further deepened the controversy surrounding the scandal.

The revelations have sparked a public outcry, with civil society groups and anti-corruption advocates demanding immediate action. They are calling for a thorough investigation into the matter and the suspension of all individuals involved, including Dominic Oppong Adjei, Yakubu Mohammed, and Clement Wilkinson. There are also calls for a comprehensive review of the procedures for disposing of government assets to prevent similar scandals in the future.

There has been no official response from the government or the Jubilee House.

How a young man was beaten, robbed by police officers at Jubilee House

A young man named Emmanuel has come forward with shocking allegations against police officers, claiming he was beaten and robbed near Jubilee House in Accra.

“I was on an okada moving from Accra when I got to Flagstaff House and was stopped by some police officers on new motorcycles,” Emmanuel recounted. He disembarked from the motorcycle when the driver sped off, prompting the officers to chase the rider unsuccessfully.

The officers then turned their attention to Emmanuel, arresting him despite his protests of being only a passenger. “They told me to keep quiet, and out of nowhere, one of the officers slapped me. After that, they cuffed my hands,” he said.

Emmanuel detailed a harrowing experience, stating that the officers took him to an undisclosed location where they beat him severely and even shocked him with an electric device. They then demanded his mobile money code, threatening his life in the process.

“They took the money I had on me, GHC120. They kept threatening me, and I gave them the code. They transferred GHC3,750 from my phone.”

The situation escalated when one officer suggested they shoot him after obtaining the money.

“The one with the gun is an Ewe man, so I started engaging him in our dialect. He convinced the other officer to let me go, and they abandoned me in an unfamiliar area,” Emmanuel revealed.

After finding his way home, Emmanuel decided to lodge a formal complaint at the Adenta Police Station but was directed to the Cantonment Police Station instead.

There, he was informed that the mobile money account used for the transfer was linked to a police officer. However, the officers refused to let him see the suspect’s face.

Emmanuel expressed frustration, noting that it has been three weeks since the incident and no arrests have been made despite the ongoing investigation.

  • NDC youth threaten to protest at Jubilee House over $34.9m ambulance spare parts deal

NDC youth threaten to protest at Jubilee House over $34.9m ambulance spare parts deal

Deputy National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has announced plans for a protest at the Presidency in response to the controversial ambulance spare parts deal.

Mr. Ayariga criticized the deal, labeling it as a misuse of national resources and indicative of corruption. He declared that the NDC will not tolerate what they see as mismanagement and plans to lead a demonstration involving unemployed Ghanaians to the Jubilee House and the office of President Akufo-Addo’s daughter.

In a media interview on Tuesday, Ayariga expressed his frustration with the administration’s handling of the deal, describing it as deeply troubling. He asserted that the level of corruption within the government is alarming and unacceptable.

“The protest is aimed at holding the government accountable for what we perceive as financial missteps and corruption. We want transparency and to draw attention to this issue,” Mr. Ayariga stated.

He further claimed, “Today, who else is benefiting from bloated and inflated contracts other than the President’s daughter and her associates who are enjoying from the ambulance contract? There is a new report from the Auditor-General indicating another purchase of 307 ambulances that was inflated from $24 million to $54 million—a staggering $30 million bloated contract. Meanwhile, we have 1.9 million unemployed youth roaming the streets of Accra. Soon, we will occupy everywhere, including the Jubilee House and President Akufo-Addo’s office.”

The Ministry of Health has responded to concerns raised by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, regarding a service contract with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited for ambulance maintenance.

The Ministry clarified that the contract was initially signed by the now-defunct Ministry of Special Development Initiatives, and the execution was later overseen by the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat.

Following the dissolution of the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives, the Ministry of Health was directed by the Chief of Staff to support the National Ambulance Service in maintaining the ambulances due to Parliament’s refusal to approve the Secretariat’s budget. The Ministry of Health sought letters of credit totaling $34.9 million from the Ministry of Finance for spare parts, but the Ministry of Finance could only approve $10 million, advising additional financing through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The NHIA indicated it could not fund the spare parts from its 10% allocation to the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health emphasized that Service Auto Group Ghana Limited had not received the reported $34.9 million and reiterated its commitment to maintaining a sustainable maintenance regime for the ambulances.

Ablakwa had raised concerns about potential corruption, questioning the legitimacy of Service Auto Group Ghana Limited and its connections to President Akufo-Addo’s daughters. This prompted him to petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

The Ministry of Health stated that all documentation related to the transaction is public record and expressed readiness to support efforts for further clarity in the public interest.

Pay 5-month salary due Jubilee House cleaners – Sam George to Akufo-Addo

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel George Nettey, has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure that cleaners at the Jubilee House receive their overdue five-month salaries.

Foster Domey, who claims seven years of service at the Jubilee House, expressed the hardship faced due to not receiving salary for five months.

“We have asked why we have not been paid for five months. But the company which employed us says the government has not paid them, hence the inability to pay us our salary,” he said in an interview with an Accra-based radio station.

Assured by management of imminent payment, Domey and his colleagues remain optimistic about receiving their dues soon.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Samuel George Nettey directly appealed to President Akufo-Addo to intervene and ensure the cleaners’ salaries are promptly settled.

“I am using this as an appeal to the president. President Akufo-Addo, the cleaners at the Jubilee House say for five months they have not been paid their salary. Please pay them. For five months, President Akufo-Addo why? What it takes you to fly one trip with Serwaa Broni will pay all these cleaners.”

  • Yours is to provide public service not to appropriate personal gain – Akufo-Addo tells new ministers

Yours is to provide public service not to appropriate personal gain – Akufo-Addo tells new ministers

President Akufo-Addo has instructed the new ministers to promptly file their asset declarations.

He emphasized that their roles are for public service, not personal gain.

The president made these remarks at the Jubilee House during the swearing-in ceremony for the new ministers on Monday, May 20.

He highlighted the importance of integrity, stating, “Your contribution will not only be to the success of my government but also equally important to the success of our party, the NPP,  its excellent presidential candidate, Vice President Dr Mahamdu Bawumia, and its parliamentary candidates in the 2024 December elections. To this end, the quality of integrity which will permeate your work in these last few months  is extremely important

“We are called to these public appointments to provide public service not to appropriate personal gain. Do not in this regard fail to file your asset declaration promptly and remain above reproach in your public dealings, your conduct, my conduct, our collective conduct in the executive will determine to a large extent the fate and fortunes of our party in the NPP in this and succeeding decades.”

President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in the new ministers, noting that despite having only seven months left in the administration, they have ample time to make a significant impact.

“You have joined the government at the last lap of its mandate, with seven months to go but I am confident that there is enough time for you to make a difference and significant contribution, Indeed anyone who has something to prove can make a point within a short period and I am sure you various competencies, experiences, and talents make this distinctly possible,” he said.

However, the president expressed surprise at the Minority’s walkout during the consideration and approval of the new ministers.

He described their action as a “pity,” adding,“It was a pity that at the last moment, the Minority which has participated in all the prior processes found it necessary to walk out of parliament at the formal approval stage. we thank God that the walkout was not fatal to the vote of approval,” he said.

On Friday, May 17, the Minority in Parliament staged a boycott of the approval process for President Akufo-Addo’s new ministers. Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson questioned the urgency of the approval, given the existing large number of ministers and deputies in the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.

As they walked out, some opposition lawmakers were heard saying, “Ghanaians are suffering.” Dr. Forson told the Majority side, “If you don’t care, we care.”

“May I ask, how is the approval of the President’s nominees for ministerial positions an urgent matter, when this Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government already has a large number of ministers and deputy ministers?” He asked.

    The ministerial nominees are:

    • Health: Hon. Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye
    • Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation: Ophelia Mensah Hayford
    • Information: Ms. Fatimatu Abubakar
    • Gender, Children, and Social Protection: Dakoa Newman

    • Education: Kingsley Nyarko
    • Employment and Labour Relations: Hon. Festus Awuah Kwofie

Protesting opposite Jubilee House is not permissible – Police tells dumsor vigil organizers

The Ghana Police Service’s Greater Accra Regional Command has informed organizers of an upcoming protest that their chosen location is deemed unsuitable due to security concerns.

The organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil met with the police on May 15, 2024, following their notification of a protest scheduled for May 25, 2024, against frequent power outages, known as dumsor.

In a confidential notice dated May 15, 2024, the police expressed concerns about the chosen protest site, Revolution Square, citing its proximity to the Jubilee House, the seat of Government, as a security zone.

They cautioned that conducting the protest there could endanger public defense, order, safety, and infringe upon the rights and freedoms of others.

“That the Jubilee House which is directly opposite the Revolution Square is the seat of Government and therefore a security zone, thus the protest and picketing at the Revolution Square may endanger public defence, public order, public safety and violate the rights and freedoms of other persons.”

Additionally, the police highlighted the security implications of the proposed midnight closing time.

Instead, the police suggested relocating the protest to Independence Square and assured organizers of their full support in facilitating the relocation.

As of now, there has been no response from the organizers regarding this latest development.

Majority set to discuss leadership reshuffle with Akufo-Addo in Jubilee House – Reports

All Members of Parliament representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been summoned for an urgent meeting with President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Banquet Hall of the Jubilee House tonight. This information comes from reliable sources at The New Publisher.

According to insiders, the meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday, had to be rescheduled to tonight due to the president’s busy agenda.

Insiders reveal that among the topics to be discussed at the meeting is a dialogue aimed at reaching a consensus on the formation of a new leadership for the Majority Caucus in the current Parliament.

There are discussions regarding proposals for restructuring the current leadership of the majority.

Amidst these discussions, a few NPP MPs from the Ashanti Region held a brief press conference yesterday.

The conference, led by Joe Osei Owusu, the MP for Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, aimed to refute the speculations circulating about potential changes within the party’s leadership.

“We have confidence in the leadership as they are and the status quo shall remain. We are aware that upon the nomination of one of the Deputy Whips as a Minister, a replacement would be made.

That replacement would be made by the Caucus when we have had the opportunity and the time to consider the appropriate replacement,” Joe Osei Owusu, who also doubles as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, noted.

He continued: “The Parliament of Ghana has adopted Standing Orders, which place the selection and change of leadership of the Caucus in the hands of the Caucus and not anybody outside Parliament.

Barely an hour after the Joe Osei Owusu press conference, another group of MPs from the same Majority Caucus were said to have assembled for another press conference to disassociate themselves from the position adopted by the first group.

Some members of the current leadership were said to have stepped in to restrain the second group of MPs, who insist they were neither contacted nor consulted by Joe Osei Owusu and his set of MPs.

Tonight’s meeting at the Jubilee is expected to be one of frank and open dialogue on the exact issues regarding the proposed reshuffle.

Meanwhile, some members of the Minority have started to mock the Majority and to describe the press conference addressed by Joe Osei Owusu as one with tribal undertones.

Prioritize legacy over wealth when you occupy Jubilee House – Yaa Naa advises Mahama

The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, has cautioned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, against amassing wealth if he secures re-election in the upcoming 2024 polls.

Yaa Naa emphasized the importance of prioritizing a meaningful legacy over personal wealth in the event of assuming power again.

These remarks were conveyed during a courtesy visit by John Mahama to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, where the Yaa Naa, represented by Naa Jacob Mahama, offered advice.

Naa Jacob Mahama stated, “I believe you’re not coming to make more money for your family but to leave a legacy that not only your children will be proud of but will pave the way for them wherever they may find themselves in the future when you are long gone to your maker.”

The Overlord of Dagbon also urged the former president to be vigilant about discerning genuine friends from opportunistic ones, cautioning against potential undermining of his government if he wins the 2024 elections.

Yaa Naa highlighted the significance of identifying true allies, drawing from Mahama’s past experiences.

John Mahama commenced his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ on Monday, February 5, 2024, covering Mion, Gushegu, and Yendi constituencies in the Northern Region. The second day of the tour includes engagements in the four constituencies within the Tamale Township, namely Tamale Central, Tamale North, Tamale South, and Sagnarigu constituencies.

“The most important thing for you at this stage of your political life is to be able to tell who your true friends are from the opportunistic ones. You were there once, and it shouldn’t be difficult for you to understand,” he advised.

Builsa South MP anticipates Mahama restores original name of Jubilee House

Former President John Dramani Mahama has received calls to change the name of the seat of government from the current “Jubilee House” back to its original “Flagstaff House.”

This request follows his announcement to restore the original names of public universities previously renamed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In welcoming Mr Mahama’s decision to restore the original names, Builsa South Member of Parliament, Dr Clement Apaak, said: “Seated behind him [JM] during his interaction with stakeholders in the Zuarungu Constituency, I leapt with joy when he announced that he would restore the original names of the universities renamed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

“I have no doubt that Operation Restoration will include the seat of government. Flagstaff House it was, and so would it be again. Our history will definitely be restored,” he wrote on his X platform.

Mahama emphasized that the current names would be assigned to significant infrastructure within the universities.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer asserted that every public university was initiated and built by the NDC, highlighting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) practice of renaming these institutions.

“We are known as nation builders because of the number of schools we have built. Every public university was initiated and built by us. All the NPP knows how to do is name universities that people have built.

“After NDC builds a university, then they will give it the name of one of their heroes or people. We are going to rename the universities. Ghana has many heroes, and not only the heroes of the NPP tradition.

“We can name an administration block, hostel, and library after somebody. But the university must reflect its core mandate. And so we will restore the original names, and the names that they have given them will be given to significant infrastructure in the universities.

“And we will add other people and name the infrastructure in the universities after them. But if the university is the University for Development Studies, that is its core mandate. It will be called the University for Development Studies,” he said while addressing party supporters, chiefs, and students at Zuarungu in the Upper East Region.

Mr. Mahama, in expressing his intention to revert the names of public universities, mentioned that the current names would be allocated to notable infrastructure within the institutions.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emphasized that the NDC had initiated and constructed every public university.

It is noteworthy that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo renamed the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) after Simon Diedong (SD) Dombo, a politician affiliated with the United Party tradition.

There’s so much disrespect in Ghana’s politics – Manhyia chiefs bemoan

Members of the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) have voiced their regret over a visit to Jubilee House, the official residence of the President of Ghana, citing disrespectful treatment by the security personnel on duty.

The revelation was made by Otumfuo’s respected linguist, Nana Kofi-Wusu, during discussions with a delegation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which included General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, and Ernest Owusu Bempah, among other Ashanti regional executives. The summons came in response to alleged disparaging comments made by the Ashanti regional Chairman of the party against Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during the party’s parliamentary vetting ahead of the January 27, 2024 primaries.

Nana Kofi-Wusu expressed his disappointment, stating, “There’s too much disrespect in how you guys are conducting your political activities, even though some NDC and NPP members accord us the needed respect.”

He went on to share a specific incident during their visit to Jubilee House: “Last time we came to your place, I mean Jubilee House, the President had traveled then, so we decided to visit the Vice President. When we got there, this was our treatment: ‘Hay!! Don’t pass here, pass here, go!’ What they did to us in the Jubilee House, oh. But you come here with pride, we even facilitate your coming to Manhyia without any frustration.”

Nana Kofi-Wusu emphasized the contrasting treatment, pointing out that while political leaders are accorded respect when visiting Manhyia, the same courtesy is not reciprocated during their visits to the Jubilee House.

“The treatment was very bad and humiliating. Most of you come to Manhyia with your cameras to even take pictures in Manhyia with Otumfuo, including when shaking hands with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and us when you come here don’t we allow you to do all this easily?” he questioned the NPP delegation.

He concluded by cautioning the NPP leaders, stating, “So, Nana B, Koduah, and all of you here, do you think we will allow you people in the time ahead of you to destroy Asanteman through NPP’s political activities? No, it will never happen. Kick out the odd one that wants to destroy your party and the relation between Manhyia and the NPP. My proverb for you is that don’t allow one groundnut to destroy thousands of your groundnut. Remove the rotten one and throw it away for your peace.”

Alleged Jubilee House soldiers involved in GHC29k gold robbery

A report from The Herald has disclosed the names and designations of the individuals involved in an armed robbery at Akyem Akanteng in the Eastern Region, bringing embarrassment to the Office of the President, Jubilee House in Accra.

The implicated individuals, including four soldiers, an immigration officer, and a private security man, have been remanded in police custody by the Koforidua Circuit Court B. Notably, the Ministry of the Interior has distanced itself from the Immigration Officer, clarifying that he is not stationed at the Ministry and pledging to investigate the matter.

Initially, the names of the culprits were concealed, with only the victim, a 55-year-old cocoa purchasing clerk named Samuel Ofori, being identified.

In a report, The Herald implicates Sergeant Mensah Dominic (41 years) and Lance Corporal Tetteh Wayo (43 years), both stationed at the Jubilee House as part of the culprits.

Armed with military rifles, the accused reportedly invaded the complainant’s home at 3:00 am on November 11, demanding GH¢100,000 and making threats.

The frightened complainant offered GH¢10,000 cash and 5 grams of gold ore valued at GH¢29,000, which the accused took before fleeing. The police apprehended the suspects at the Osenase checkpoint, recovering military rifles, ammunition, and a helmet.

The accused face charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, leading to their remand until November 28, 2023, as requested by Assistant State Attorney Micdad Iddrisu, to facilitate ongoing police investigations.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has refuted media reports suggesting that the Immigration Officer arraigned before the Koforidua Circuit Court ‘B’ for involvement in an armed robbery at Akyem Akanteng is stationed at the Ministry of the Interior.

“The Ministry of the Interior wishes to inform the general public that the Immigration Officer in the media reportage is not stationed at the Ministry of the Interior as purported and as such the public should treat that reportage as false information, a statement posted on its website said.

“The Ministry, therefore, disassociates itself from the Officer and will conduct investigation to unravel the fact of the matter.

“The Ministry of the Interior remains committed and will continue to ensure peace, security, law and order in the country for the benefit of the people living in the country,” portions of the report from The Herald read.

  • God is against Akufo-Addo and the Jubilee House – Prophet Kofi Oduro

Founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, is of the firm assertion that the presence of God has departed from both the present government and its opposition party in Ghana.

During one of his sermons, Prophet Oduro expressed his conviction that this divine absence is evident in what he characterized as “irrational behavior” displayed by those in positions of power.

He stressed the notion that the presence of God becomes unmistakably apparent when it guides the actions of individuals or governments, leading them to align with divine principles.

However, he argued that the current political landscape in Ghana appears to indicate otherwise, suggesting a lack of divine influence on the decision-making processes of those in power.

In his sermon, Prophet Oduro stated, “How can anybody tell this present government or their opposition, that God is with them? Who has the boldness to talk that nonsense? God is with them?

“Don’t you know when God is with somebody? If God is with someone, those people don’t go through madness; it has been a long time since God has forsaken you, people. I am telling you.”

The religious leader proceeded to deliver a message of divine judgment, specifically targeting the highest office of the presidency, Jubilee House, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He confidently stated that they would not be exempt from facing the repercussions of their actions and choices.

“Tell Jubilee House the Lord is against you, tell Jubilee House judgment is on your head, tell Akufo-Addo you are under judgment, tell him. I have told you the mind of God…the one who sent me has given me a message.

“I don’t care who you are; I presented it as it is. Tell them they will never go scot-free. Anybody here who has spent people’s money, you will pay; take it from me, you will pay the price. I am telling you the mind of God,” he declared.

  • Christian Council calls for swift investigation into police arrests during Jubilee House protest

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has urged for a “prompt” inquiry into the apprehension of certain individuals by the police on Thursday, September 21 during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

Furthermore, the Council is insisting “that anyone found culpable should be subjected to the full extent of the law to restore confidence in our democratic system.”

These demands were articulated in a press release issued on Tuesday, September 26, and endorsed by the General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose.

The incident in question pertains to the tumultuous commencement of the three-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

Due to a dispute between the police and the organizers, Democracy Hub, concerning a court application to halt the protest, the police had issued a warning against any gathering for the demonstration.

However, despite the warning, over 50 individuals defied the order with the intention of marching to the government’s headquarters for the planned picketing. They were subsequently detained but later released.

Reports indicated that those who were arrested encountered mistreatment while at the various police stations where they were held.

The Christian Council has strongly criticized the “unprofessional” behavior of the police.

The Ghana Police Service has submitted an application to the court to prevent a scheduled demonstration by the Democracy Hub group near the Jubilee House from Thursday, September 21st, to Saturday, September 23rd, 2023.

In a statement, the police stated that they are awaiting the court’s decision before taking any further action. They have also advised the public to ignore any calls from individuals or groups encouraging them to gather for a protest at the Jubilee House.

Furthermore, the police have called on the protest organizers to adhere to due process in the interest of public order and safety.

Democracy Hub, the organizing group, has accused the government of economic mismanagement and called for improved relief packages for struggling Ghanaians.

The demonstration is scheduled to take place on Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, which is observed nationwide.

During a press conference on Tuesday, September 19th, the organizers outlined their plans to ensure a smooth and successful protest over the three-day period.

They have assured participants that logistical preparations, including mattresses, tents, and mosquito nets, have been made for those who wish to stay overnight at the Jubilee House.

“All I was seeking was the ultimate good” – Charles Owusu on Jubilee House security exodus

A former Head of the Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu has responded to the denial by the Presidency of his allegation that some security officers at the Jubilee House are quitting their jobs due to unfair treatment.

He made the allegation last week on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, where he claimed that 77 security personnel had left the seat of government to their respective units since 2017.

However, the Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, issued a statement to refute his claim. He said that no security officer had left the Jubilee House because of any mistreatment and that Charles Owusu had failed to provide any evidence to support his false claim.

“The Office of the President would like to put on record that at no point in the tenure of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, from 2017 till date, have seventy-seven security personnel left Jubilee House to their respective units.”

“Indeed, no security officer has left Jubilee House because of “unfair treatment meted out to them at the seat of the presidency. Curiously, at no point in Mr. Owusu’s submissions did he provide any evidence whatsoever to buttress these false claims,” the statement read.

On Friday’s edition of ‘Kokrokoo’, Charles Owusu broke his silence on the matter and said that he was only seeking the ultimate good for the security officers.

“I said something about security and the Jubilee House last week. The Presidency issued a statement seeking to clarify the issue and also received several calls including one from our own Captain Koda. The statement is superior and he also maintained that nothing of that sort has happened. All I was seeking was the ultimate good,” he said.

He added that he had received several assurances from reliable sources that there was no problem with the security officers at the Presidency.

Claims that 77 security personnels have left their posts debunked by Jubilee House

77 security men allegedly leaving Jubilee House for their various units has been refuted by the President’s Office.

Since the start of the Akufo-Addo administration, no security officers have ever deserted their posts, according to a statement issued by the Director of Communication at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin.

“The Office of the President would like to put on record that at no point in the tenure of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, from 2017 till date have seventy-seven security personnel left Jubilee House to their respective units.

77 security personnel want to leave Jubilee House over unfair treatment – Charles Owusu alleges

Former Head of the Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu, has cautioned African leaders concerning the treatment of the security personnel responsible for their safety.

Given the recent occurrences of coup d’états in various West African nations, Owusu stressed the significance of treating security personnel justly and with dignity.

During a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokroo on September 1, 2023, he argued that several of the recent coups in Africa could be categorized as “palace coups,” wherein senior military or special forces officers seize control of the government.

“Most of the coups that have happened in recent times are palace coups. Palace coups, in the sense that you will realize someone like a special forces commander who is protecting the president has taken power from him.

“The way politicians treat security men is very important. You are holding a pen, and someone else is holding a gun. Who is more dangerous? The person with the gun is protecting you, but you are not treating him fairly,” Owusu asserted.

According to him, approximately 77 security personnel at Jubilee House, including members of the military and police, quit because of perceived unfair treatment.

“Go to Jubilee House and see, the police, soldiers and everyone complaining, it got to a point where almost 77 security personnels decided to leave Jubilee House and go back to the unit.

“I am not sure that they are taking note that why would they struggle to get the seat of government and yet go back to where they came from… I know many of the people who have gone back. What type of treatment are you giving them?”

As a result, he expressed concern about this exodus, asking why people would seek positions in government then return to their previous occupations.

“What kind of treatment are you giving them? Ministers of state have been given police escorts, but they are treated like animals, as if they are not human beings,” he noted.

  • Gold Mafia Docu: Akufo-Addo should sue Al Jazeera if he is serious about retraction – Lawyer

Gold Mafia Docu: Akufo-Addo should sue Al Jazeera if he is serious about retraction – Lawyer

Private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini, Jubilee House’s sole alternative now is to sue Al Jazeera for failing to withdraw and apologize for statements against President Akufo-Addo in its Gold Mafia documentary.

The presidency had issued a seven-day ultimatum to Al Jazeera to retract and apologise for alleged misrepresentation of the President in the documentary which exposes corruption, gold smuggling and money laundering on the continent of Africa.

Al Jazeera has responded it is unable to grant the wishes of the presidency, because it has done no wrong.

Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM, Samson Lardy Anyenini explained that because the president did not question the ethics of Al Jazeera but rather called them out for intending to malign the President’s name, a commission will not be the forum to go to.

Mr Anyenini said that the court becomes the place to prove the media house intended to slander the president “once you couch the complaint in the manner of defamation. In this case, they actually say it’s malicious defamation, which means there was clear intent and malice, to do what they did. They knew it was wrong and untrue but proceeded to publish.”

Mr Anyenini added that “Now the judicial authorities are very clear that when it comes to the online or the cyberspace, the law is that where the publication takes place and for the purposes of a defamation claim, where the relevant words are heard or read, so it doesn’t matter if you’re in Ghana or not once your publication was read in Ghana, a party that is affected has a right at law to take you on.”

A letter signed by Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante on April 25, stated; “I am instructed by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to demand formally that Al Jazeera Media Network (Al Jazeera”) retract immediately and apologise for airing an inaccurate and unfair documentary that contained spurious and unsubstantiated allegations against the President and the Government of Ghana.”

However, Al Jazeera, in its reply on Thursday, May 4 to JoyNews’ Kwaku Asante’s email requesting a response to the demands by the presidency, said it does not owe the president nor his office any apology since it did not allege the issues raised in the letter from Jubilee House demanding the retraction and apology.

Meanwhile, Mr Anyenini noted that although there is a law in Ghana hindering people from suing the President while he is in power, there may not be any that stops him from taking the legal route, especially in this defamation case.

“The President can take up the suit in any part of the world but more conveniently in Ghana and when he wins, the question remains how do you enforce the judgment? We have a way of enforcing a foreign judgement, as long as there is what we call the reciprocity kind of agreement,” Mr Anyenini said.

He explained that “You are allowed to register that judgment and enforce it. I suppose that where Al Jazeera is physically located, it will be the case that the same rules will be invoked and applicable to enforce a judgment against them.”

Background: How Ghana appeared in Al Jazeera’s ‘Gold Mafia’ documentary

Early on in April, Ghana popped up in a damning investigative documentary conducted into some of Zimbabwe’s gold smuggling and money laundering syndicates.

In the concluding episode, undercover journalists posing as Chinese gangsters interact with one of the key players, Alistair Mathias to help clean a supposed dirty money.

‘Gold Mafia’: We have responded to Akufo-Addo’s letter – Al Jazeera

Mr Alistair who is described in the piece as a Financial Architect told the reporters posing as criminals that he had a track record of successfully orchestrating such syndicates.

Essentially, he is said to be instrumental in designing money laundering schemes for many corrupt politicians in Africa.

Alistair named Ghana as one of the countries where he had executed similar schemes, alleging associations also with the President.

Mr Mathias added that he used to be the biggest smuggler in Ghana at one point, raking out about $40 million to $60 million worth of gold a month from the West African country.

During the documentary, Alistair outlined his modus operandi to the undercover journalists suggesting that the most important credential of his operations in Africa comes from the trust that some dubious politicians have in him to keep their siphoned resources safely tucked away.

He revealed that in doing this, the politicians involved do not keep assets in their own names, but rely on proxies.

Citing government infrastructure as an example, he indicated that he is able to take huge contracts on behalf of Ghanaian politicians, inflate the cost and subsequently split the profit afterwards.

“In Ghana, I take tenders, road construction, procurement, supplying different things, oil, this that. There, all the politicians get taken care of, indirectly because it allows me to do all my other stuff freely.”
‘Gold Mafia’: We have responded to Akufo-Addo’s letter – Al Jazeera

    He explains further in the documentary;

“For example, Ghana government, Mathias Holdings, I get the contract. I subcontract it to you, $100 million contract. Ghana government pays me $100 million. I give it to you and you say it’s $80 million” he told the investigative reporters who secretly recorded the interaction.

In this scenario, the outstanding $20 million out of the inflated $100 million is shared per an arrangement reached between Alistair and the said politician.
‘Gold Mafia’: We have responded to Akufo-Addo’s letter – Al Jazeera

“I’ll have an arrangement with them and they get 15… I’ll probably get 5 million,” he added.

“I keep all of it in Dubai. Whenever they want it, they just tell me and I send it.”

Akufo-Addo ‘begs’ Japan’s PM to help Ghana obtain $3bn IMF deal

In order to assist Ghana in reaching a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Board for the 3 billion dollar balance of payment support, President Akufo-Addo has solicited the backing of Japan.

According to Akufo-Addo, Japan which is a member of the Paris Club has a major role to play in Ghana securing the IMF deal.

Speaking at a meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida who made a stopover at the Jubilee House Tuesday evening, Mr Akufo-Addo said Ghana will repay Japan’s support.

“Ghana is also counting on the support of Japan in reaching a favourable agreement with the International Monetary Fund which will pave the way for the robust recovery of Ghana’s economy,” President Akufo-Addo said.

In July 2022, Ghana requested for a three-year, US$3bn extended credit facility (ECF) from the IMF. An arrangement was agreed with the IMF in December 2022, with the aim of restoring credibility among investors, building reserve buffers and improving fiscal and debt sustainability.

However, debt restructuring needs to be agreed upon with Ghana’s external creditors before the IMF’s Executive Board can sign off on the ECF.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s hope of securing an IMF board approval is expected to delay owing to prolonged external debt-restructuring negotiations, and the involvement of numerous stakeholders in the process, according to the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The EIU in its 2023 Country Report on Ghana, stated that it anticipates Ghana to secure restructuring agreements on its public external debt during 2023-24, involving official and private creditors alike.

It however, notes that, given the country’s pressing macroeconomic crisis, “the conclusion of a domestic debt-swap operation in February and increasing international attention on speeding up external debt restructurings, our core forecast remains that the IMF programme will be approved by mid-2023.”

“We expect Ghana to secure restructuring agreements on its public external debt during 2023-24, involving official and private creditors alike. This will include a combination of write-offs, maturity extensions and reductions in interest rates. We expect official creditors to agree to a deal in 2023, and this, combined with the domestic debt restructuring that has already been secured, should provide enough reassurance to reduce Ghana’s risk of debt distress and allow the IMF to approve the agreed programme”.

“However, there is a material risk that IMF board approval will be delayed owing to prolonged external debt-restructuring negotiations, given the involvement of multiple stakeholders in the process,” it noted.

Why Sammy Gyamfi thinks Jubilee House is now a crime scene

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has described Jubilee House, which is the seat of government in Ghana, a “crime scene.”

According to Gyamfi, the complex has become a place for illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) activities in the country, and that the galamsey report by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is proof of his claim.

“Professor Frimpong-Boateng is not an ordinary person talking but this was the man who was in charge of the fight and he has not just written a report and kept under his bed but submitted it to the presidency and indicated that he is ready to substantiate those allegations.
“In fact, in some of the instances, he has even given us evidences including videos, pictures and messages and so we must get to the bottom of these issues.
“Then he talks about the former NPP MP for Manso Nkwanta who under the guise of community mining also acquired a lot of concessions. So you see, the Jubilee House today is a crime scene,” he stated on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

He criticized President Akufo-Addo for not taking any action on the report submitted by Professor Frimpong-Boateng, who was in charge of the fight against galamsey in the first term of Akufo-Addo’s government.

Gyamfi emphasized that Frimpong-Boateng is a reputable individual and had submitted evidence to substantiate his allegations against some appointees in the Jubilee House.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng, who was the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, accused some individuals in government of frustrating his efforts to fight illegal mining activities when he was a minister.

He submitted a document that contained the names of people he claimed were interfering with the committee’s work. In the document, he mentioned that party officials had engaged in illegal mining activities and that there were appointees in the Jubilee House supporting the menace.

Some individuals mentioned in the report, including President Akufo-Addo’s cousin Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, have denied the allegations. Otchere-Darko explained that he only called Frimpong-Boateng to seek information on his client, a company that had permits to mine in the country.

He added that the Minister deliberately twisted his mediation to cause public disaffection for him.

A letter signed by Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante stated that; “I am instructed by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to demand formally that Al Jazeera Media Network (Al Jazeera”) retract immediately and apologise for airing an inaccurate and unfair documentary that contained spurious and unsubstantiated allegations against the President and the Government of Ghana.”

Mr Mathias added that he used to be the biggest smuggler in Ghana at one point, raking out about $40 million to $60 million worth of gold a month from the West African country.

But the Presidency says some “parts of the documentary are malicious, defamatory, and a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation of the President and Government of Ghana.”

Lord Commey, the Director of Operations at the Presidency, has vehemently refuted claims that he participated in illegal mining (galamsey).

A 37-page report authored by the former Minister for Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng who was Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (ICIM) named Mr Commey as one of the persons at the Jubilee House who had hired Chinese nationals to engage in galamsey on his behalf.

“There are appointees in the Jubilee House that are doing or supporting illegal mining or interfering with the fight against the menace. Examples are Lord Commey, Charles Nii Teiko, and Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Protozoa).”

But in a response, Mr Commey said he had “never engaged in or supported illegal mining as contained in the said report.

“There is no point prior, during and after the appointment of the said Minister have I called, text or even assigned anyone to seek favour in respect of engaging in illegal mining to warrant his unsubstantiated allegations against me.

He dared the former Minister to provide evidence to back his allegations.

    Below is the full statement

RE: REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE IMCIM SO FAR AND THE WAY FORWARD

My attention has been drawn to a 37-page report purported to have been written by the former Minister for Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng who was Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (ICIM).

The report said to have been submitted to the Chief of Staff (CoS) cites me as an example of persons supporting or engaging in illegal mining.

“There are appointees in the Jubilee House that are doing or supporting illegal mining or interfering with the fight against the menace. Examples are Lord Commey, Charles Nii Teiko, and Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Protozoa),”

For purposes of setting the records straight, I wish to state without shred of doubt that I have never engaged in or supported illegal mining as contained in the said report.

There is no point prior, during and after the appointment of the said Minister have I called, text or even assigned anyone to seek favour in respect of engaging in illegal mining to warrant his unsubstantiated allegations against me.

I therefore challenge him to prove beyond reasonable doubts claims I was either promoting or engaging in illegal mining or I would use available legal means to protect my hardwon reputation.

Until proven otherwise, I would urge all to treat the claims of Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng with the contempt they deserve.

Mahama will reinstate Jubilee House to Flagstaff House – MP

Former President John Dramani Mahama if elected President again will restore the initial name given to the seat of government Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Clement Apaak, has disclosed.

“The seat of Ghana’s presidency will revert to its original name of Flagstaff House from the current Jubilee House” the lawmaker says.

President Akufo-Addo changed the name to Jubilee House in 2018, two years after assuming office.

The Builsa South MP in a tweet and dated April 16, stated that Mahama will seek to reinstate history by reversing the name change come 2025 when he assumes office.

“JM will govern Ghana from Flagstaff House not Jubilee House! The true history of Ghana will be reinstated under JM, be rest assured,” his tweet read.

It was in reference to a GhanaWeb story about how Mahama in an address to party faithful in Nsawam last week had opted to refer to the presidency as Flagstaff House instead of Jubilee House.

Mahama signalling the Jubilee House will revert to Flagstaff House?

The former president in an address to party faithful in Nsawam last week had cause to speak extensively about the office of the president.

Among others, Mahama who is campaigning for the presidential flagbearership of National Democratic Congress (NDC) boasted of knowing the place well having been the first occupant of the edifice as a president.

In his address, he referred to the place currently known as Jubilee House by its old name Flagstaff House.

“7th January 2017, I showed Akufo-Addo around the Flagstaff House, where he will sit, his vice president, cabinet office, his meeting and conference rooms, I am the one who showed him around.

“So, I was asking a question, on 7th January 2025, who will show John Mahama around the Flagstaff House?” he asked party faithful at the St. Martins Secondary School in Nsawam.

“I opened Flagstaff House and I am the first president to have worked from there, it is true it was built by president Kufuor but I was the first president to stay at Flagstaff House.

“So, after my inauguration, I will drive straight to Flagstaff House and start work,” he said to cheers from the supporters.

“The historic institution of the Jubilee House Iftar, after we assumed office in 2017, reflects its importance, and the significance our government attaches to our engagements with religious groups, in our quest to promote harmony among our people,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Dr. Bawumia added: “The month of Ramadan is a period of devotion, sacrifice and togetherness, and the Iftar, as we all know, is a time during Ramadan, which defines the essence of unity, as we have all gathered here from diverse backgrounds, including our Christian brothers, for a meal to break the day’s fast and also pray for our nation Ghana.”

The Vice President also praised the presence and active participation of Christian leaders in the Iftar and called for the strengthening of ties between Muslims and Christians for the peace and unity of the country.

“Listening to the brief sermon of Apostle Dr. Stephen Kwame Ntow Amoani, a renowned Christian leader, at a Muslim Iftar, signifies how special our country is. It is rare to see such beautiful co-existence in many countries, and we must all be proud of our country’s enviable status as a religious-tolerant nation,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“It is important for all of us to continue to play a role to preserve this harmony, and not allow it to be destroyed by those who hate to see such tolerance and togetherness,” he urged.

Present at the Iftar included Ministers, Members of the Council of State, MPs, Members of the Diplomatic community, Muslim leaders and some members of the clergy.

Jubilee House accused of using LGBTQ colours to welcome Kamala Harris

The seat of government, Jubilee House, has been accused of using LGBTQ colours as part of ways to welcome US Vice President Kamala Harris.

The US Vice President touched down at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Sunday afternoon, March 26, 2023.

Viral images show the Jubilee House in a variety of colours including; red, yellow, green, white and violet. This has been read by some Ghanaians on social media as government publicly accepting LGBTQ.

According to one Eric Adjei during an interview on UTV, the president has embraced homosexuality with this action.

Per reports, the images are colours of the United States of America and Ghana. Colours of the LGBTQ community are red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo and violet.

Ghana’s colours are red, gold, green and black, while the US use red, white and blue.

Jubilee House and the LGBTQ colours

In response to the matter, Rightify Ghana noted that the colours on the Jubilee House are not those of the LGBTQ community.

It is believed that the fusion of some colours may have caused this confusion. The violet colour is formed by mixing red and blue, which are primary colours.

  • I drew closer to God after my divorce – New EC member

I drew closer to God after my divorce – New EC member

One of life’s most humbling moments, according to a recently inducted member of the Electoral Commission (EC), was when she went through a divorce and realized how important it was to focus on her relationship with God.

Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng is also the first Female Programme Director of the Anglican Diocese.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, she indicated that even though she used to go to church growing up, she was never deeply involved in church activities and the things of God.

“Actually what brought me to the place of really paying attention to God was that I went through a divorce. I used to be a regular church goer, I drive my mother to church, hang out outside, when it’s time for communion, I go inside and take communion, come back outside,” she said.

“I didn’t belong to Scriptural Union (SU), I wasn’t a server, I was nothing, I remember when I went to seminary and we were introducing ourselves, everybody was a youth pastor, you know people were in the church, me I’m a member of my church, I pay dues and that’s it.”

Rev. Ofori Boateng explained that she was very fortunate to have relatively comfortable parents who took care of her very well and caused her to have a smooth life until things started to take a turn.

According to her, going through a divorce, becoming a single parent and even losing her job along the way made her feel as if her life had hit a wall.

“But it just brought me to a point of asking myself, what am I doing? I lived a pretty comfortable life, I went to GIS, went to university, got a job, you know everything followed for me so this was new like whoa, my life is supposed to go well so that really brought me to what people term as “a come to Jesus moment” where you’re really asking yourself, where do we go from here,”

“But I think that’s how God works with us, in that he brings us to a full stop, where I literally hit a wall, went through a divorce, lost my job, everything went bad,” she said on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

The Anglican Priest also said that when the time is right and if it pleases God, she would give love another chance.

Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng is one of the three members of the Electoral Commission sworn into office by President Akufo-Addo. The other two are Dr. Peter Appiahene and Salima Ahmed Tijani.

The Induction took place on Monday, March 20, 2023 at the Jubilee House.

  • IMF deal in danger should China oppose Ghana’s debt relief offer – German Ambassador to Ghana

IMF deal in danger should China oppose Ghana’s debt relief offer – German Ambassador to Ghana

The $3 billion bailout requested by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) may not be authorized, the German ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, has warned, if China refuses to agree to a debt reduction plan.

Addressing the media, Mr Krull said China has so far rejected attempts by officials from Ghana to engage them to commit to the setting up of a creditors’ committee for an agreement on a debt package.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday, February 3, urged Germany to “encourage” China, an ad hoc member of the Paris Club, to support Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.

The President made the call when the visiting German Finance Minister, Christian Lindner called on him at the Jubilee House, Accra.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Thursday, disclosed that the government’s planned high-level meeting with Chinese creditors over Ghana’s debt restructuring has been postponed to late March 2023.

According to him, this is due to the upcoming National People’s Congress of China which is scheduled for early March.

But Mr Krull has disclosed that other creditors will only play their part and help if China – the biggest creditor to Ghana – agrees to the debt relief package.

“We are prepared to live up to our responsibility as one of the major bilateral creditors to Ghana, but we are only ready to implement our solidarity only if certain criteria are met. In this first place, it has to be done in an internationally coordinated fashion, and therefore we have the G20 common framework. The G20 has agreed on how to deal with these kinds of crises, and we feel that it is important that this framework is respected.

“The second condition is that we are ready to take our part when others are ready to do that so all major creditors must be ready to help Ghana. The Big elephant in the room is China. China is the largest creditor to Ghana and so far [China] is not supportive of setting up of a creditors’ committee, where the creditors will sit down and agree on an aid package for Ghana.”

Mr Krull further appealed to MPs and politicians who have business relations with China to encourage their Chinese counterparts to agree to the aid package to help rescue Ghana’s economy.

“The President and the Finance Ministers have appealed to Germany to support Ghana in convincing China to come to the table, and we are ready to do that but at the same time, I want to appeal to all Ghanaians who have strong ties to China, who are doing nice business with China to also engage them and convince them that it is time to sit down with all the creditors and agree on a package. Time is of the essence. Without this agreement, the IMF package is in severe danger.”
