Award shows no longer provide an amusing atmosphere – Kevin Hart snubs Oscars

American Comedian Kevin Hart has said he will not host the Oscars again.

Due to criticism over past anti-gay remarks he had made during stand-up routines a decade prior, Hart, who was scheduled to host the 2019 Oscars, withdrew from the role.

In a Variety Magazine interview, Kevin Hart said he would never host the Oscars.

Speaking to Sky News, Hart said: “Whatever little hope you had, I want to destroy it right now. Those gigs aren’t good gigs for comics. It’s no shot to the Oscars, no shot to the Globes or anything else. Those just aren’t comedy-friendly environments anymore.

“I think they got it right one year where it was like just a bunch of personalities acting as the hosts and that’s a nice thing. It’s a collaborative thing, different people get to be responsible for act one, act two, act three, but you know, the days of it being a room for a comic, those days are done.”

Hart, who has hosted the MTV Movie Awards, the BET Awards, and the MTV Video Music Awards in the past, commended his fellow comedians on their successful hosting careers.

“Shout out to those that have cracked the code and done it right early on, you know, the Chris Rocks of the world, the Billy Crystals of the world, the girls we’ve had like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler. Ricky Gervais. There’s a lot of people that understand that if you’re not an industry comic, meaning a comic that has the relationships of all, then those rooms are very cold.

“So, me doing it is, of course, at an advantage, because I know the room and for me, and familiar with so many but, for others it’s not the same,” Hart said. “It’s not the gig that it was of old. It’s too much pressure on the idea of a comic and what’s jokes and not jokes. So, it’s tough.”

Kevin Darnell Hart is an African-American comedian and actor who is known for his roles in the Jumanji sequels including Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), Undeclared (2001), Scary Movie 3 (2003), Think Like a Man (2012), Ride Along (2014), The Secret Life of Pets (2016), Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017), Central Intelligence (2016) and Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw (2019).

Kevin Hart explains why he now relies on a wheel chair

Kevin Hart has found himself in a temporary wheelchair due to what he described as a “foolish” injury he sustained while attempting to outpace a former NFL player during a family barbecue.

In a post on his Instagram Story, which TMZ reshared, the comedian reassured his followers not to be concerned when they spot him in a wheelchair for the next six to eight weeks.

He explained that this situation arose from his attempt to challenge former NFL running back Stevan Ridley, who was formerly with the New England Patriots, to a race.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the age 40 is real,” Hart began. “To all my men, women out there that are 40 years of age and older, it’s not a game. Respect that age, or that age will make you respect it. I was just forced to respect. This is just a public service announcement because I know people are gonna see me out and I don’t want you to be alarmed but I’m in a wheelchair.”

He continued, “Why? Well, because I tried to jump out there and do some young stuff. Tried to go out there and do some young man stuff and I was told to sit my ass down. Shout out to Stevan Ridley I’m gonna put this story out before you do. Me and Steven got into a little debate. This debate was based off of who was faster.

“Those that know me know I’m pretty fast. Steven said, ‘Kev ain’t no way you gonna beat me.’ Steven is an ex-NFL running back, played for the New England Patriots. Very good guy. I said, ‘Steve you can bet it. We get out there, we gonna run the 40 yard dash.’”

Kevin went on to say that in those 40 yards he “blew all my shit” and said he now has a torn lower abdomen and shattered abductors.

“I don’t even know what that is but I tore ’em,” he continued, “I can’t walk. Sit my ass down. This is 44. Tell me what you just lost, son. You just lost every opportunity of me to go and racing you anytime soon. It’s over. Kenneth, it’s over. Sit down. What are we competing for at this age? What am I doing?

“Why did I even race? Stupidest shit ever. Now I can’t walk because I’m somewhere trying to get the title of the fastest n***a at the barbeque. What was I thinking, son? Got to be the stupidest man alive. It is what it is man. This is life, and I’m out. I got about 6 to 8. I blew my shit.”

But it was she who got the last laugh. In an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, she told Andy Cohen what she did to work through the pain: burning all of his things. “I burnt it all, darling,” she said with a smile. “Every designer you could think of, I’ve burned.” She went on to say that she gave him fair warning though, “I text him a video and I was like, ‘Hey, I’m burning your shit. I don’t know where you’re at – probably with some girl. I hope you get home quickly because we’re progressing on the spectrum of cheap to expensive.’” Needless to say, the engagement was called off and the couple called it quits.

  • Kevin Hart opens up about being robbed at gunpoint as a kid alongside his mom

Kevin Hart has opened up about the time he and his late mother were victims of a robbery at gunpoint.

“Me and my mom got robbed,” the Philadelphia native revealed on the latest episode of the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, as seen above at the 23:30 mark. “Wanna hear the crazy part? [We were] coming from a laundromat. … We got the shopping cart, I’m talking folded clothes, right, my Mom got the cart. I got my book bag, I used to go to the laundromat do the homework. My mom just carrying this little orange fanny pack, dude came out, he said, ‘Get that shit up, bitch.’ And my Mom was like, ‘No.’”

With a smile on his face, Hart, 43, reiterated that his mother Nancy outright refused to let the assailant take her belongings. “I swear to God,” he said. “Hand on the Bible, my mom said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘You think I’m fucking playing with you? Get that shit up.’ My mom was like, ‘It’s nothing in it, and no.’ I’m just standing there, I’m looking…I’m shocked that I’m looking at a gun. He snatched it off, he go through it. My mom had a bunch of tokens in there, right? Guy get mad, he throw it at my mom. ‘You broke bitch.’ He called my mama a broke bitch.”

When the man threw the fanny pack right back at her, Kevin said she told him, “I told you it was nothing in it.” He recalled how she just picked up the bag and continued on “like nothing happened.” While she was able to brush off the incident, the comedian/actor felt like he was “going to die” at that moment. “She made me push the cart the rest of the way,” he added. “I never walked up that street again. The rest of my life I took the longest way to get to the laundromat. What once was a five minute walk took me 30 minutes.”

While he was able to recall the incident clearly, he added that Nancy never spoke about it with him after it went down. “That’s what [kind of] area that was,” he noted. “You tell me to go down there right now, I’ma say, ‘You go first.’”

  • Kevin Hart mourns the death of his father in touching tribute

Kevin Hart’s father, Henry Witherspoon, has died. The celebrated comic actor shared the news in an emotional tribute post to Instagram on Thursday.

“RIP to one of the realest & rawest to ever do it…Love you dad,” Hart captioned a slideshow of photos showing himself with his dad and his family from different happy moments over the years.

“Gone but never forgotten….Give mom a hug for me,” Hart continued. “Y’all did good man. Thank you for everything.”

The 43-year-old movie star and father of four went on to share, “I’m a better father because of you 😢💪🏾🙏🏾 We will all make you proud….”

Back in 2017, Hart opened up during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and got candid about how he repaired his once-troubled relationship with his father, and how he learned to be a better dad through his own dad’s mistakes.

“My kids actually think I’m the coolest dad on the planet … I know why I am the way that I am, my dad has a lot to do with that — the mistakes that my dad made, you know, the decisions to do drugs, being in and out of jail, in and out of our lives. I saw firsthand what not being present did and because of that, I now know what being present means,” Hart explained. “I know what that can do, I know what effect it can have on your child coming up.”

“Now, I was strong enough to deal with it coming up because I have a different attitude, I’m a positive guy,” he said of his difficult childhood. “I choose to go positive instead of negative a lot and because of that, my relationship with my dad is amazing now! And my dad understands how I feel and how I look at things, and now my dad is focusing on being the best grandparent that he possibly can.”

  • Kevin Hart on his appreciation for Will Smith despite slap: ‘The world should step out of it and let them recover’

Kevin Hart is coming to Will Smith’s defense.

On Drink Champs, the comedian defended Smith when he was asked in his conversation with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN to choose between the King Richard Oscar-winner and Ice Cube.

“Dark times deserve fucking great light,” the 43-year-old shared at the two-hour mark of the above video, clearly referring to Smith, 54, slapping Chris Rock, 57, during the Academy Awards. “I’m not gonna shit on my brother. They both are my brothers, but I’m not gonna take the time to shit on them. I’mma say Will Smith, and here’s why: Will Smith is a fuckin’—he’s not only a legend, he’s not only a GOAT.”

Hart proceeded, with notable seriousness, to credit Will with giving a platform to Black actors and creators in Hollywood.

“Will Smith is the reason why the idea of African Americans attached to global IP is normal. … Studios took the gamble on more leads of color because of the work that Will Smith, Denzel were doing in the beginning, right?” he explained. “You need the faces that are giving the universal return. So I’m not gonna shit on Will and act like he hasn’t been, and wasn’t, that guy.”

Hart added, “And people make mistakes, and from mistakes they should be allowed time to fuckin’ recover. … And that this is no longer the world’s problem, it’s Will and Chris’s problem. Let them deal with that. The world should step out of it and let them recover.”

In more lighthearted news related to Hart and the slap, the Jumanji actor snuck a blinged-out goat into Madison Square Garden during a show featuring him, Rock, and Dave Chapelle in July. The farm animal was a gift for Rock—named Will Smith.

In a July statement to Rock, Smith apologized to Chris’ mom and family (including Tony Rock), saying he didn’t realize “how many people got hurt” by the slap heard around the world.

“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out,” Will shared. “So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Smith added, “There is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment. There’s no part of me that thinks that’s the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect, or insults.”
