Nsawam Chinese prisoner and wife escaped after giving police ‘accomplices’ KFC rice, drink for alone time – Court told

Two prison officers, Joseph Oteng and Sergeant Isaac Boateng Bonsu, have been brought before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of aiding the escape of Wang Xiao, a Chinese convict at Nsawam Medium Prison.

The officers are facing charges of conspiracy and aiding escape. It was alleged that they initially claimed to their superiors that after escorting Wang Xiao to the hospital, they were approached by a Toyota Vitz car, which then drove away with the convict.

However, CCTV footage from a hotel exposed their deceit. The footage showed that the accused officers took Wang Xiao to a hotel to meet his wife in a room.

The convict and his wife allegedly escaped over the room’s balcony while the officers waited in the hotel reception area.

The prosecution said that on February 7, 2024, at around 0700 hours, the two officers were detailed to escort Wang Xiao, a Chinese national serving a one-year sentence at Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The prosecutor said that after the convict was treated by a medical officer at the hospital’s Dental Department, the two accused agreed to accompany him to the Oceans Hotel in Korle Gonno to meet his wife for a discussion in exchange for a reward of GHC1,000, which they agreed to split.

According to Chief Inspector Alorwu, the accused removed the convict’s handcuffs and took him to the hotel reception. The second accused, Bonsu, informed the receptionist that they were there to see someone in one of the rooms.

The prosecution said the two accused sent the convict to the room, where they met his alleged wife, who offered them KFC rice and drink while she “spends some time with the husband alone.”

Upon returning to the hotel room to contact the convict, the accused discovered that both the convict and his alleged wife had fled through the balcony.

The prosecutor said that after the convict fled, the accused proceeded to Tema Station Hockey to hide the handcuffs with a witness in the case.

They immediately called their superiors in Nsawam and informed them that when escorting the convict from the hospital, they were unexpectedly stopped by a yellow and black unregistered Toyota Vitz taxi, and the inmate leapt into the taxi and fled with it.

The prosecutor said the accused were interrogated by their superiors at the Prisons National headquarters, who then submitted a formal complaint to the Police on February 13, 2024.

During investigations, the accused led the police to the hotel. A review of CCTV footage revealed that the convict and his wife jumped from the balcony of the first-floor building and fled while the accused were relaxing in the reception area after receiving meals from the convict’s wife.

The prosecutor said that it was only when the hotel staff alerted them to check on the prisoner that they realized he had escaped.

The accused have pleaded not guilty, and the court, presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah, has granted them bail in the sum of GhC100,000 each, with two sureties to be justified.

They are scheduled to reappear on April 9, 2024. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, stated that the complainant was the third in command at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, and the accused were serving under his supervision.

Haatso KFC faces criticism for mistreating customers

A group of ladies who recently patronized the KFC branch in Haatso took to social media to express their dissatisfaction, claiming mistreatment by the establishment.

In a viral video, the ladies allege that after visiting KFC for a meal following a night-out, they were forcibly ejected by a security guard who insulted them by calling them derogatory names.

According to the ladies, the unpleasant incident occurred after they visited the Botanical Gardens and decided to stop by KFC for some relaxation, unaware that it would turn into a distressing experience. They assert that a rude security guard, labeling them as prostitutes, rudely forced them out after they had finished their meal.

Expressing their discontent, the ladies criticized the Haatso branch of the popular chicken joint and cautioned Ghanaians to steer clear, citing subpar customer care as their reason to avoid the establishment.

  • KFC closes its branches in Lesotho due to avian flu in South Africa

KFC closes its branches in Lesotho due to avian flu in South Africa

KFC is shutting down all its restaurants in Lesotho because there is a serious bird flu outbreak in nearby South Africa.

The government of Lesotho has stopped allowing any poultry to be brought into the country. This decision has greatly affected KFC’s ability to get chicken for their restaurants.

KFC says the chickens it uses are from farms in South Africa that are checked and confirmed to not have bird flu.

Lesotho is a country with many mountains and it is completely surrounded by South Africa.

South Africa has been working hard to control bird flu for several months and has killed more than seven million egg-laying hens – which is about 20-30% of all the hens in the country.

Last week, Mozambique killed around 45,000 sick chickens it had brought in from South Africa.

Namibia has also forbidden the bringing in of poultry from South Africa since September.

The outbreak has caused a lack of eggs and chicken meat in a few countries in southern Africa.

KFC Lesotho said they are working to find a solution and promised customers that their restaurants will reopen soon.

  • KFC issues an apology following its German Kristallnacht promotion

KFC has apologised for sending a promotional message to German customers urging them to celebrate Kristallnacht with cheesy chicken.

In 1938, a series of Nazi-led attacks in the country killed more than 90 people and destroyed Jewish-owned businesses and places of worship.

It is widely regarded as the start of the Holocaust.

The message, which was widely panned for its insensitivity, was later attributed to “an error in our system.”

The fast food chain sent an app alert on Wednesday, saying: “It’s memorial day for Kristallnacht! Treat yourself with more tender cheese on your crispy chicken. Now at KFCheese!”

Around an hour later another message was sent with an apology, according to the Bild newspaper.

“We are very sorry, we will check our internal processes immediately so that this does not happen again. Please excuse this error,” the message is reported to have said.

Germany takes the 9 November anniversary of Kristallnacht (the night of broken glass) seriously, with numerous memorial events and discussions scheduled to reflect the Nazis’ murder of more than six million Jewish people.

Daniel Sugarman, Director of Public Affairs at the Board of Deputies of British Jews described the original KFC message as “absolutely hideous”.

Dalia Grinfeld, the associate director of European affairs at the Jewish NGO Anti-Defamation League, tweeted: “How wrong can you get on Kristallnacht KFC Germany. Shame on you!”

In a statement issued to Newsweek magazine, KFC Germany blamed the message on a bot.

The fast food chain said the “automated push notification” was “linked to calendars that include national observances”.

It added that it “sincerely” apologised for the “unplanned, insensitive and unacceptable message” and said app communications had been suspended while an examination of them takes place.

“We understand and respect the gravity and history of this day, and remain committed to equity, inclusion and belonging for all,” the company finished by saying.

  • Chains such as Burger King, KFC, and Pizza Hut face disruption as a result of a strike vote at a key food supplier

In the case of a catastrophic strike by Best Food Logistics workers, fast food restaurants may be forced to hurry to source alternative supplies through no fault of their own.

It claimed that 93% of employees had rejected a 6% pay increase since it was much lower than the rate of inflation and amounted to a real-terms pay loss this year and next.

Nadine Houghton, GMB National Officer, said: “These workers bust a gut to deliver fresh, just-in-time food to some of the biggest names in the business.

“Best Food’s parent companies Booker and Tesco are making incredibly healthy profits and paying large dividends while leaving these workers crushed by the cost of living.

“Now some of their biggest clients may well be left short this Christmas because they won’t meet GMB’s reasonable request for a pay deal that protects our members through this year and into next with a genuine cost of living increase.”

The prospect of disruption to supplies for chains builds on a year of intensifying union action across the economy that has seen railway workers, Royal Mail, and Post Office staff-to-Felixstowe dock workers walk out in a fight for better pay.

The outgoing leader of the trade union body the TUC has warned key healthcare workers could be next on the picket lines this winter.

Frances O’Grady was due to tell its annual congress they were already struggling with rising bills and claim that members of unions were facing the “longest squeeze on real wages since Napoleonic times”.

‘So it looks like we have nurses strike on our hands?’

“If ministers and employers keep hammering pay packets at the same rate, UK workers are on course to suffer two decades of lost living standards”, she said.

“We have got to stop the rot”.

The prospect of a pay fight between the government and unions representing health workers could not come at a more difficult time given winter pressure on the NHS and the clear signal from the new chancellor Jeremy Hunt that he will be keeping a tight hold of the public purse strings in the wake of the disastrous mini-budget outlined by his predecessor.
