Man nabbed for allegedly murdering his 2-year-old son

A 22-year-old man named Kwame Krah has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing and burying his two-year-old son.

The incident occurred at Koraso Ward 1, near Berekum in the Bono Region, and it is believed that Krah buried the child about a month ago.

The story, reported by Nana Kwame on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, states that the child’s mother had entrusted her son to Krah while she looked for a job.

Initially, the child, Kwame Junior, was left with his grandmother, but following an argument, Krah took the boy back.

Reports indicate that Kwame Junior fell ill, but Krah did not seek medical treatment, which allegedly led to the child’s death. Krah then reportedly placed the boy in a charcoal bag and buried him, subsequently going into hiding for a month.

Upon his return, the child’s mother confronted him about Kwame Junior’s whereabouts. After repeated questioning, Krah confessed to killing and burying the child.

The exact details surrounding the child’s death are unclear, as Krah has given conflicting accounts.

He initially claimed the child fell ill and died, prompting him to bury him. However, under pressure from local youth, he later suggested he had intentionally killed his son.

The situation became tense, with local youth threatening to lynch Krah, prompting police intervention. The police had to fire warning shots when their requests to take Krah to the station were ignored. Krah is now in custody, assisting the police with their investigation.

Australians protest against rise of killings of women

Rallies have occurred throughout Australia following a surge in recent incidents of violence against women.

Protesters are advocating for gender-based violence to be officially recognized as a national emergency, with calls for more stringent laws to combat it.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has acknowledged the severity of the issue, describing it as a national crisis.

On average, a woman in Australia has lost her life to violence every four days this year.

Organizer Martina Ferrara emphasized the need for alternative reporting avenues for victim survivors, empowering them to share their stories and navigate their healing and reporting processes.

“And we want the government to acknowledge this is an emergency action and take immediate action.”

Speaking at a march in the capital Canberra attended by thousands of protesters, Mr Albanese admitted the government at all levels needed to do better.

“We need to change culture, the attitudes, the legal system and the approach by all governments,” he said.

“We need to make sure that this isn’t up to women, it’s up to men to change men’s behaviour as well,” he added.

Responding to calls by protestors for violence against women to be classified as a national emergency, Mr Albanese said the classification was normally used during floods or bushfires to release a temporary injection of cash.

“We don’t need one month or two months – we need to address this in a serious way, week by week, month by month, year by year,” he said.

His comments were met with mixture of heckles and cheers,

But Australia’s federal attorney general, Mark Dreyfus, has rejected holding a royal commission into gender-based violence.

Mr Albanese has repeatedly called gender-based violence an epidemic but it’s not new: in 2021, marches took place across the country over allegations of sexual misconduct within the government.

In Adelaide, it was estimated around 3,000 people rallied outside the city’s parliament building on Saturday.

Protests have also taken place in Brisbane, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Newcastle over Friday and Saturday, 9News reported.

Recent killings have put the issue back in the spotlight.

Earlier this month, a man stabbed six people to death in a Sydney shopping centre. Five of the victims were women and the police are looking at whether they were the target.

New South Wales Police Force commissioner Karen Webb said “the offender focused on women and avoided the men”.

The rallies also coincided with the charging of a man with the alleged murder of 30-year-old mother-of-four Erica Hay, who was found dead after a house fire in Perth earlier this month.

In all, 27 women have been killed in the first 119 days of 2024, according to data compiled by the campaign group Destroy the Joint.

36-year-old man in police grips after allegedly killing ex-wife with cutlass

A tragic incident has occurred in Sehwi Yerepemso, located in the Bia West District of the Western North Region, where a 32-year-old woman named Afua Patricia was allegedly murdered by her ex-husband, a 36-year-old man known as Nii from Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East Municipality.

According to Baba Solomon, the former Assemblyman of Papaasi electoral area, the unfortunate event took place on Sunday, February 18, 2024, between 7:30 am and 8:00 am, as Afua Patricia was en route to the church to prepare for the morning service.

Baba Solomon revealed that Afua Patricia and Nii had been briefly married and share a one-and-a-half-year-old child.

However, their relationship soured, leading Afua Patricia to return to her mother’s residence in Sehwi Yerepemso.

Continuously troubled by his ex-wife’s relocation, Nii reportedly stirred conflict over the situation.

Despite the ongoing discord, Afua Patricia faithfully attended the church every Sunday morning to ensure it was prepared for the upcoming service.

“She goes to tidy and clean up the Church of Pentecost and then goes back home to dress up and come to church”.

Baba Solomon highlighted that as Afua Patricia was returning home, she encountered both her ex-husband and, unfortunately, her ex-boyfriend, who had been residing in the village for approximately two weeks. Tragically, they attacked and stabbed her multiple times, resulting in her untimely demise.

He recounted how Afua’s mother, who had eagerly awaited her daughter’s return to attend church together, became increasingly worried when Afua failed to appear.

“Her mother went towards the church route to search for her daughter and encountered her daughter’s ex-husband along the way.

“She asked Nii where his wife was, but Nii told the mother that Afua Patricia had gone on an errand so he took the lead home.

According to Baba Solomon, the woman’s mother went to the village committee to report her daughter’s absence after becoming increasingly worried.

According to Baba Solomon, the woman’s mother went to the village committee to report her daughter’s absence after becoming increasingly worried.

When the village committee detained Nii and asked him where his wife was, he simply replied that he didn’t know.

Since the man was the last person seen with Afua Patricia, the committee then asked the police to take him into custody.

“When the police arrived, that was when Nii said the truth and led them to where his wife’s body was”.

The alleged murderer has been taken into custody by the police at Sehwi Adjofua, and the deceased has been placed in the morgue of the Sehwi Juaboso government hospital.

3 suspects to face court over killing of German tourist in South Africa

Three suspects are set to appear in court in South Africa facing multiple charges, including murder, linked to the death of a 74-year-old German tourist on Saturday.

According to South African police, the trio is accused of brutally assaulting the tourist, resulting in his death, and then abandoning his body in the town of Northam in Limpopo province.

The tourist had offered a lift to a hitchhiker while driving from Botswana. The hitchhiker subsequently contacted two others, who joined the tourist in his vehicle and proceeded to his accommodation. There, they tied him up, assaulted him, and stole his money and other belongings, as reported by the police.

The suspects, identified as foreign nationals, allegedly disposed of the body in a bush near a farm, the South African Police Service (SAPS) stated.

“We are committed to building a strong case that will lead to significant convictions for these individuals,” stated Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the police commissioner of Limpopo province.

  • Our security is in danger because of military killings – Nunoo Mensah

Our security is in danger because of military killings – Nunoo Mensah

Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, a former National Security advisor, has raised alarms, labeling the continuous killings of civilians by the military as a growing security threat.

His comments come in the wake of an incident the military has termed a “neutralization” operation involving individuals engaged in gunfire.

This encounter resulted in the deaths of three Bawku residents, escalating tensions in the area already dealing with renewed chieftaincy conflicts.

The incident, which took place on the night of January 18, 2024, led to the unfortunate demise of three individuals. The military, assigned to maintain peace amidst the chieftaincy conflict, asserted that the deaths occurred during an exchange of gunfire at Sabongari around 8:30 pm. According to the military, officers on night foot patrols near Hasania School were attacked by four gunmen, prompting a defensive response.

However, this version contradicts reports that emerged on January 19, 2024, suggesting that soldiers were responsible for the killing of three residents on the previous night. Despite these claims, the military has denied any involvement in the deaths, maintaining that their actions were in response to a direct threat. Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah’s statement underscores the need for a thorough investigation into the incidents and a reevaluation of the military’s approach to maintaining peace in the region.

“It is worth mentioning that at about 2030 hrs same day, own troops conducting night foot patrols around Hasania School at Sabongari were fired upon by 4 gunmen. The troops returned fire spontaneously neutralizing 3 of the assailants. The fourth suspect managed to escape,” the statement said.

The Armed Forces further stated in its release that “It is instructive to note that directly engaging the military is a development that could result in fatal consequences; as troops will spare no opportunity to defend themselves as well as protect residents of Bawku. Therefore, factions in the Bawku conflict are cautioned against drawing the military into direct armed confrontation while efforts are undertaken to resolve the current impasse.”

In an exclusive interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, a former Chief of Defence Staff, attributed the recent killings to indiscipline within the military. He expressed the view that such indiscipline stems from the fact that military personnel are recruited from what he termed as “a rotten society.”

“If Ghana is rotten, the military will be; that rot will also infect the military…. The individuals we are recruiting into the army come from the public. What do you expect?” he questioned.

When questioned about whether Ghana was moving closer to that scenario, the former security advisor commented that the signs are already evident within our communities.

  • Burkina Faso: Group calls on govt to probe deaths of herdsmen allegedly killed by security forces

Burkina Faso: Group calls on govt to probe deaths of herdsmen allegedly killed by security forces

The Bissa Development Association (BDA) is calling for justice in response to the alleged killing of seven Ghanaians in neighboring Burkina Faso.

The victims, hailing from the Bawku belt in the Upper East Region, were reportedly arrested by Burkinabe security forces in separate incidents and allegedly executed on suspicion of being connected with Jihadist groups.

The initial incident occurred around October 10, 2023, involving two young men, Lukuman Karim and Bashiru Nuhu, from Mognori Central, who crossed into Burkina Faso.

They were purportedly arrested and instantly executed based on suspicion of having trading links with Jihadist groups.

A second incident involved two nomadic herdsmen, originally Burkinabe citizens residing in Baribari within the Bissa belt in Bawku.

In October 2023, they crossed into Burkina Faso with their cattle to graze along the White Volta at Korlela.

The herdsmen were allegedly arrested and executed on suspicion of being informants to Jihadist groups in the area. The cattle were sent to a public location in Burkina Faso for owners to identify and collect.

On October 13, 2023, six men, including five cattle owners and Mahmudu Bani, the father of the executed herdsmen, crossed the border from Ghana to Burkina Faso to identify and retrieve their missing cattle.

Allegedly, they were arrested and summarily executed by Burkinabe security forces. The BDA questions why the security forces did not investigate the innocence of these individuals.

Expressing deep concern, the BDA highlighted the government of Ghana’s silence on the matter, which led some families to perform funerals as hopes were lost.

Condemning the alleged acts, the association urges the Ghanaian government to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Bissa people, primarily found in West Africa, have significant populations in Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Togo. In Ghana, they are located in the Upper East Region around Bawku, Garu, and Tempane.

“Reports are that they were arrested by Burkinabe security forces and executed instantly based on suspicion that they may have trading links with Jihadist groups.”

“On 13th October 2023, 6 men, 5 of whom are owners of some of the cattle, and the 6th person being Mahmudu Bani, father of the two herdsmen executed days earlier, all of whom are from the Bissa belt, crossed the border from Ghana into Burkina Faso to identify and retrieve their missing cattle that were sent to the identification and collection centre after the two herdsmen were executed.”

“According to sources, the 5 Ghanaian Bissas and their Fulani herdsman, Bani Mahmudu, were allegedly arrested by security forces in Burkina Faso and summarily executed. Sources allege that Bani Mahmudu, who led the 5 cattle owners, was already on a wanted list of the security forces for some alleged links to Jihadist groups.”

“While we appreciate the Burkinabe government’s effort to combat terrorism on its territory, we cannot accept the alleged summary execution of our brothers who cross into Burkina Faso for one reason or the other. The BDA further condemns the deafening silence by the government of Ghana in addressing the reports of the missing 7. It has been three long months of trauma, grief, and extreme pain for the families and loved ones of the missing persons,” the group added.

Police arrest 22-year-old man for killing his father over alleged witchcraft

Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly killing his father, Usman Bello, with a pestle in Akko Local Government Area in Nigeria.

A statement released by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Mahid Mu’azu Abubakar, revealed this on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, as Lawan was paraded alongside other suspects arrested for various crimes in the state.

According to the PPRO, Lawan allegedly hit his father, 65, with a pestle on the head on the allegation of witchcraft.

The spokesperson said he is concerned that cases of murder are being reported and linked to witchcraft, where people alleged seeing others in their dreams and concluded that they were responsible for their plight and subsequently leading to the k!lling of the suspected witches.

The PRO said there was another case linked to witchcraft involving an old man, who sought the assistance of a young man to help him cross a stream but was equally attacked with a plank by the young man, and his body dumped in a river.

ASP Abubakar said CP Etim and the Police frown on such acts and directed that members of the public should desist from carrying out such acts because the issue of witchcraft is not in the law.

“You cannot do what we call trial by ordeal, bringing somebody, taking him to herbalists that he must confess that he is a wizard. That is trial by ordeal and is not known in the law. In a case when a person confesses by himself that yes, I am this. The law can work on him and we know what to do with him,” ASP Abubakar added.

He called on traditional rulers and religious leaders to preach against trial by ordeal because it was a serious offence, which could land the person that committed it or any party involved in the case in court.

Sudan army base battle claims lives of city residents

In the Sudanese city of Nyala, heavy fighting between rival military forces has persisted for several days, resulting in the death of at least 30 civilians and leaving dozens others injured.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Arab militias have been engaged in attempts to seize control of the main army base in the city, which serves as the capital of South Darfur state.

In response, the army has used heavy artillery, leading to shells hitting residential areas.

As a consequence of the violence, many people have fled to villages outside the city, seeking safety.

A human rights worker informed the BBC that RSF fighters have been compelling civilians to surrender their vehicles.

The western region of Darfur has witnessed the worst of the violence since the fierce power struggle erupted in April between the army and the RSF.

Numerous regional efforts have been made to negotiate a ceasefire between the two factions.

  • Somalia: 8 people killed in Puntland violence

Somalia: 8 people killed in Puntland violence

In fighting on Tuesday outside parliament in Puntland, a semi-autonomous state in northern Somalia, between local security personnel and armed militiamen supporting the opposition, at least eight people were killed, according to police and witnesses.

The violent clashes in the state capital, Garowe, occurred during a parliamentary session to debate amendments to the local constitution, which the opposition sees as an attempt by the President of Puntland to extend his term of office.

“Eight people were killed in the clashes and around ten others were injured, including civilians”, said Abdiweli Hassan, a police officer in Garowe.

The clashes broke out when armed men loyal to opposition members clashed with security forces protecting parliament and tried to disrupt the session, he said, assuring that calm had now returned.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre called on both parties to settle their differences through dialogue “rather than arms”.

One witness, Mohamed Nur Ali, said he had seen six bodies. “The clashes were very intense, and both sides used heavy machine guns,” he added.

Another witness, Nimo Adan, said she was caught in the firefight and saw several people killed.

In May, Puntland held local elections, the first direct elections in Somalia for more than half a century, outside the breakaway region of Somaliland.

The opposition accused the President of Puntland State, Said Abdullahi Deni, of manipulating the electoral process and seeking to amend the Constitution to allow him to extend his term of office, which ends in January 2024.

An arid, oil-rich region in north-east Somalia, Puntland declared its autonomy in 1998 and relations with the central government in Mogadishu have often been strained.

Somalia has not held a national election by direct universal suffrage since 1969, when the dictator Siad Barré took power in this country in the Horn of Africa.

At the end of May, Somalia announced the signing of an agreement between the government and the federated states providing for the introduction of direct universal suffrage from 2024 and the transition to a presidential system.

The agreement is intended to put into practice the often repeated but never implemented promise of “one person, one vote” from the local elections scheduled for 30 June 2024.

Up until now, elections have been held according to a complex indirect process based on the clans that structure Somali society.

But opposition figures have denounced the overhaul of the political system, rejecting the new electoral timetable which provides for elections to the parliaments and presidencies of the federated states on 30 November 2024, which would mean a de facto extension of the terms of office of some presidents, including Said Abdullahi Deni, due to expire before that date.

Nungua ‘killer’ husband receives curses as he makes first appearance in court

On May 3, 2023, a guy simply known as Isaac made his first court appearance. He is accused of killing his wife in the Accra suburb of Nungua.

Family and friends of the deceased who was hacked to death for allegedly demanding a divorce from the serially abusive husband thronged the courts.

Many of them seething with anger, others raining curses on the accused whiles shedding tears when the accused was being escorted out of the premises after the hearing.

According to a report by Accra-based UTV sighted by the media, some of the acquaintances attempt to manhandle the accused who has a bandaged head and is wearing a black face mask.

He is handcuffed with both hands at his back as the police shepherd him and another person into a vehicle that speeds from the premises as irate onlookers point fingers at him, some attempting to hit the car.

The report of his deadly attack on the deceased was reported earlier this week.

According to a witness to the marriage, the deceased serially begged to return to her matrimonial home whenever the husband’s actions caused her to leave.

“I was the linguist at their marriage and I have known all the issues that plagued their union,” the witness told reporters stressing that it was unfortunate the role that some clergymen played in begging her each time to return to the abusive husband.

Relatives and friends were gathered at the lady’s home in Nungua wailing over her loss.

Pastor Boafo of Calvary Baptist speaking at the home lamented the death and the circumstances leading to it before calling on government to ensure that justice is served.

“Things are getting worse. The nation must speak. Young people have been left to be committing crime. I beg the nation not to coverup the issues.

“He committed the crime in front of people I know personally, this is not heresy. We beg the government to take action and deliver justice.”

According to some accounts, he killed the wife and committed suicide over her insistence on proceeding with a divorce.

6 quick facts about the 1994 genocide attack

On April 6, 1994, a plane carrying Habyarimana and Burundi’s president Cyprien Ntaryamira was shot down over the capital city of Kigali, leaving no survivors. (It has never been conclusively determined who the culprits were. Some have blamed Hutu extremists, while others blamed leaders of the RPF.)

The Rwandan Genocide was a mass slaughter of Tutsi people and moderate Hutus that occurred between April and July 1994, resulting in an estimated 800,000 deaths.

The genocide was sparked by the death of Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, whose plane was shot down on April 6, 1994, leading to widespread violence and killings.

The genocide was carried out by the Hutu-led government and militias, who targeted Tutsis, moderate Hutus, and anyone who opposed their agenda.

The violence was fuelled by propaganda and hate speech disseminated through government-controlled media, which portrayed Tutsis as enemies of the state.

The international community failed to intervene, despite warnings of impending genocide, and many Rwandans were left to fend for themselves.

The aftermath of the genocide saw the establishment of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to prosecute those responsible, as well as efforts to promote reconciliation and rebuild the country.

Oscar Pistorius of South Africa denies parole for killing his partner

A paralympic gold medalist from South Africa, Oscar Pistorius, was denied parole after asking for an early release from jail ten years after killing his girlfriend in a gunshot.

“We were … advised at this point in time that it has been denied and it will be considered again in one year’s time,” Tania Koen, a lawyer for the victim’s family, said on Friday.

The Department of Correctional Services said Pistorius had not completed the minimum detention period required for parole.

Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp, a model, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day 2013, firing four times through the bathroom door of the house where the duo lived in Pretoria.

Known worldwide as the “Blade Runner” for his carbon-fibre prosthetics, he was jailed in 2016, initially for a six-year term. The sentence was increased to 13 years after prosecutors appealed, arguing that the initial sentence was too lenient.

He had pleaded not guilty and denied killing Steenkamp in a rage, saying he mistook her for a burglar.

Friday’s parole hearing was held at a correctional facility on the outskirts of the capital where the 36-year-old is being held.

Prisoners in South Africa are automatically eligible for parole consideration after serving half of their sentence. Pistorius has served more than half, having started his term in 2014.

  • Pregnant woman accused of killing unborn child’s father hours after baby shower

Prosecutors in Chicago said a pregnant woman fatally stabbed the father of their unborn child after they got into an argument over who should use a microwave. The fatal incident happened hours after their baby shower, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The suspect, Keshia Golden, is eight months pregnant. Her court-appointed attorney said her next court appearance will be held barely two weeks before she is expected to deliver.

The fatal October 23 incident occurred after Golden together with her boyfriend Calvin Sidney and some family members returned to her home after their baby shower. In the wee hours of that morning, prosecutors said that Golden and Sidney got into a dispute over who should warm leftovers with the microwave. Sidney is said to have “pushed” Golden “down on the counter” after she struck a plate he was holding.

Sidney subsequently entered a bedroom after his uncle separated them. But Golden, who had a knife in her possession, entered the bedroom and stabbed her boyfriend in the leg, prosecutors said. She subsequently exited the apartment.

The stabbing resulted in Sidney sustaining a femoral artery injury. He was taken to a hospital where he died. Golden’s mother, Tarsha Ellis, told the Chicago Sun-Times that her daughter “didn’t mean to kill anyone.”

“She’s broke up about it. She didn’t know you could kill someone by stabbing them in the leg. She just wanted him to leave because he was acting out, and she was worried about hurting the baby. And he wouldn’t go,” she added.

Golden was said to be unaware her boyfriend had died when she went back to the apartment hours after the altercation. Officers who responded to the scene arrested her. Prosecutors also said she did not deny stabbing Sidney. The suspect also sustained injuries from the physical altercation with her boyfriend. She was admitted to the hospital as a result.

During her bail hearing, prosecutors said the fatal incident wasn’t the first time Golden and Sidney had gotten into an altercation that had escalated. Police, between June and September, were said to have received multiple domestic violence-related calls involving the couple. And they had to go to the suspect’s home on each of those occasions. On four of those occasions, Golden alleged she had been choked, punched, slapped, or pushed by her boyfriend.

Court records and police reports also stated that in July, the pregnant woman obtained an order of protection against Sidney after claiming he physically assaulted her. The next month, prosecutors said that Sidney opted not to file charges against Golden after she injured him during another altercation.

“It was just toxic with those two,” Ellis, said. “But they loved each other. If he could raise up right now, they wouldn’t have no case because he would never want charges against her.”

Golden is currently being held on a $2 million bail. Her attorney, Julie Koehler, said prosecutors asked for Golden to be denied bail despite a 2019 Illinois law which stipulates that pregnant women should not be jailed before a trial unless it is determined she poses a public threat.

“To not only force Keshia to give birth in jail but then to immediately take her child away after birth is cruel to the mother and the baby,” said Koehler. “This heartless decision is contrary to Illinois law. All the evidence shows Keshia acted in self-defense. The only person she’s ever shown any violence toward was the man that was beating her.”

  • Court discharges siblings arraigned for killing Enugu-based makeup artist

An Enugu State High Court has discharged one of the siblings accused of killing Enugu-based makeup artist, Ijeoma Nneke.

Two siblings, Chiamaka Ifezue and Chukwuemeka Ifezue, are standing trial for allegedly forcing the deceased (Ijeoma Nneke) to drink a poisonous substance that caused her death.

But in discharging Chukwuemeka, the trial judge, Justice K.I Okpe, held that there was no evidence that he actually participated in the Commission of the crime.

A court document SaharaReporters sighted on Tuesday, showed that Chukwuemeka Ifezue was discharged of the crime on July 28, 2022.

At the resumed trial on Tuesday, the case could not go on as the defence counsel, Mr Chuma Oguejiofor, informed the court that he had filed an appeal against the continued trial of the case.

The Prosecution counsel, Mrs C. C. Chigbo, however, told the court that she had not been served the notice of the appeal. Consequently, Justice Okpe adjourned the case till November 30, 2022, for the defence to open their case.

The court in the last two sittings had admitted into evidence police exhibits on the case of the alleged murder of the makeup artist.

The suspects, who are siblings, allegedly dumped her body at the Maryland axis of Enugu metropolis and poured a corrosive substance suspected to be acid on the carcass.

Chigbo led the Prosecution Witness 7 (PW7), Sgt. Udeze Oguguo, a police officer, in evidence to tender the exhibits.

Oguguo, who was attached to the Independence Layout Police Division, Enugu, said that the exhibits were recovered at the scene of the alleged crime.

The exhibits included five pieces of 20 British pounds, an iPhone 7plus with MTN SIM card, another iPhone device and a blackberry phone.

Others are a broken 9Mobile SIM card, itel phone, another black phone (no brand name), MTN SIM pack, makeup tools belonging to the deceased.

Also tendered in evidence was the key of a Toyota Metrix Scan with registration number JJJ410BJ which was allegedly used to move the dead body of the deceased from the scene of the crime to where it was dumped.

The police officer said that the car which had been parked at the Police Anti-kidnap Formation was no longer in good condition to be moved to the court.

He also tendered hard copies of the WhatsApp messages and text messages (SMS) the deceased had with her fiancé and girlfriend respectively while at the scene of the crime.

Oguguo also tendered the non-confessional statements of Chiamaka made on November 18, 2020, November 19, 2020, and January 14, 2021, which were all admitted in evidence.

  • Ashanti Region: Police kill suspected robber and arrest two others

The police have arrested two suspected armed robbers and shot dead another on Thursday (13 October) at Asuofua Asamang in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, who was later identified as Issaka Muniru was shot when he attempted to fire at the police in an operation. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police also succeeded in arresting two of his accomplices, Kwaku Boateng alias Form Noede and Kojo Gyamfi.

“The two are currently in police custody and will be put before the court to face justice,” an official statement said.

The police retrieved a pistol, which was allegedly used to fire at the officers, and 13 rounds of live ammunition.

The deceased, Issaka Muniru and his robbery syndicate have been involved in a series of robberies within the Kumasi metropolis and its environs for years, the police said.

    Brush with the law

Before his demise, Issaka Muniru was standing trial with three other accomplices Ernest Agyei Badu alias gangster, Rider, and MBY at the Nkawie Circuit Court for robbing one Pastor Emmanuel Barfour Awuah of Abuakwa Abakomadi at gun point on 26 May 2021, and making away with his two gold wrist watches, mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

Police say the deceased was granted bail by the court but he jumped the bail and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. His accomplices are still attending trial at the court.

“In another robbery where Issaka Muniru, now deceased, was named as the gang leader, three other members of his gang, Charles Kojo Fosu, Yaw Anim and Paul Osafo were arrested by the police but he managed to escape. The three suspects have since been remanded into prison custody,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, the statement commended the Ashanti regional police command, particularly, personnel of the regional intelligence and operations teams who conducted the operation.

“We would like to assure the public that we will continue to carry out our constitutional mandate of protecting life and property and maintaining law and order even at the peril of our lives,” the statement added.

  • 12-year-old fatally shot teen cousin before killing herself while on Instagram Live

Authorities in St. Louis said a 12-year-old girl fatally shot her teen cousin before turning the gun on herself.

And though police initially ruled the deaths of Paris Harvey and 14-year-old Kuaron Harvey as a murder-suicide, family members said the Friday incident, which happened during a family party, was an accident, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Family members also said the two cousins were playing with a gun on Instagram Live when the incident occurred. “It wasn’t a situation where they were arguing or anything like that. They were playing with the gun, when they shouldn’t have been. Of course, they shouldn’t have been doing it. I think it just went off. It went off by mistake,” Paris’ grandmother, Susan Dyson, said, adding that she had watched the video.

The incident happened at an apartment the family had rented for birthdays in March. And family members said the deceased cousins were making a video in the bathroom mirror when the shootings happened. The two were alone at the time.

“Everybody was getting together to celebrate, and so the younger kids, they got a bed and breakfast,” Paris’ mother, Shinise Harvey, told KSDK. “They were making a video, and (Paris) was playing with the gun, but it went off and hit him.”

Family members said Paris may have accidentally shot herself after unintentionally killing Kuaron. Both cousins died from a gunshot wound to the head.

“It was no murder. It wasn’t a suicide,” Paris’ mother said. “It was a freak accident. It happened.” Harvey also said she hadn’t seen the video, but family members who did, narrated what happened to her, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Harvey also said the deceased cousins were “trying to be too hip.”

“For as long as I can remember, Nike’s been a part of my family,” Bronny told Complex. “Getting a chance to team up with them and continue my family’s legacy both on the court and in the community is wild—it really means a lot to me.”

The Nike deal is Bronny’s second NIL deal. In February this year, he signed a deal with underwear brand PSD in which he designed his own underwear.

With 6.6 million followers on Instagram, Bronny is said to be earning over $ 5 million from NIL deals and the number is expected to increase with the Nike deal, according to On3 Projects.

Marca reports that Bronny is currently deciding on the college he will play at before heading to the NBA. Sports Illustrated quoted Bronny’s mother as saying he is more likely to play college basketball instead of going directly to the NBA.

“Bronny wants to have a college career,’ Savannah James said in August. “I think it would be really cool for him to start with collegiate basketball, just to start his legacy there.”

In an interview with The Athletic in February, LeBron revealed his desire to play his final NBA season with his oldest son.

“My last year will be played with my son,” he said. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.”

  • Nigerians protest against donkey killings by Chinese

Hundreds of Nigerians held demonstrations in the capital Abuja to protest against the “illegal” slaughter of donkeys by Chinese nationals, local media report.

They said the killing of donkeys had continued despite an order by the government to stop the menace.

The civil society groups that organised the protests accused the agriculture minister of allowing foreign nationals to engage in the donkey trade.

A bill to regulate the regulate donkey business is currently being considered in parliament.

Last month, Nigeria’s customs service intercepted 7,000 donkey penises at an airport in the commercial hub, Lagos, that were headed to China.

Donkey parts are in demand in China for use in traditional medicine.

  • China’s quarantine bus crash kills 27 people, sparks anger against zero-Covid policy

Anger and criticism over China’s unrelenting zero-Covid policy has erupted after a bus transporting resident to a coronavirus quarantine facility crashed on Sunday, killing 27 people.

According to authorities, the bus was carrying 47 people from Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, to a remote county 155 miles (249 kilometers) away, when it overturned on a mountainous stretch of highway and rolled into a ditch at around 2:40 a.m.

It is unclear why a quarantine bus would take people on winding mountain roads after midnight. China’s transport regulation prohibits long-distance coaches from operating between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

A photo widely circulated on social media shows the bus driving at night, with the driver wearing a full hazmat suit that left only his eyes uncovered. Other photos and videos show the bus being towed by a truck, its top crushed, and a hazmat suited worker spraying disinfectant on it. While CNN cannot independently verify the photos and videos, the bus license plate in the images matches the plate number reported by authorities.

Survivors of the crash are now receiving treatment in hospital, according to authorities.

News about the deaths sparked a huge outcry on Chinese social media, with many questioning the increasingly over-the-top implementation of China’s zero-Covid policy, which relies on snap lockdowns, mass testing and extensive quarantining measures to curb outbreaks.

Stringent and prolonged lockdowns have recently sparked outcries in cities ranging from Guiyang, Chengdu to Jinan, as well as the regions of Xinjiang and Tibet.

“What makes you think that you won’t be on that late-night bus one day?” read a viral comment, which garnered more than 250,000 likes before it was censored.

“We’re all on the bus. We just haven’t crashed yet,” another comment said.

Chinese censors rushed to cover the outrage. Many state media postings about the accident have closed the comment section, and search results appeared to be filtered. A related hashtag attracted more than 450 million views as of Sunday evening, but only posts from official government and media accounts were shown.

A Guizhou resident who said her friend was killed on the bus took to Weibo to demand the Guiyang government to be held accountable. Her posts were widely shared, drawing an outpouring of anger and sympathy. The user declined CNN’s interview requests and later hid her posts.

Guizhou officials are under huge pressure to contain even small-scale Covid outbreaks in the lead up to the 20th Party Congress, where Chinese leader Xi Jinping is expected to secure a norm-breaking third term in power.

Guizhou reported 712 infections for Saturday, accounting for 70% of new cases nationwide. Nine local officials in Guiyang have already been suspended this month for failing to implement Covid policies properly.

On Saturday, Guiyang officials vowed to “fight a decisive battle” to eliminate community transmission. In zero-Covid China, a solution commonly used by local authorities is to bus entire buildings or communities of residents out of the city to quarantine elsewhere.

In Guiyang, which was placed under a lockdown earlier this month, authorities prepared 20 buses and 40 drivers to transport close contacts of Covid cases to other cities, the state-run Guiyang Evening Paper reported. As of Saturday, more than 7,000 people had been transferred, and nearly 3,000 were waiting to be bused out.

According to government data, only two people have died of Covid in Guizhou, a province of 38 million people, since the beginning of the pandemic.

  • Sierra Leone families arrive to identify loved ones killed in protests

The families of Sierra Leoneans who died in protests against the spiralling cost of living arrived at a morgue in the capital Freetown on Monday to identify their loved ones.

A small crowd gathered outside the Connaught Hospital, where officials said the remains of 31 people were waiting to be identified.

Hawa Kamara said she had come from Makeni, around 200 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the capital, “to identity the corpse of my brother who… was killed on his way home by a bullet.

“We just want the government to hand over his corpse to us for a dignified burial in his hometown,” she said.

Desmond Samai said he, too, had lost his 34-year-old brother.

“We took the body home for burial but were advised to take the corpse to the mortuary at Connaught Hospital and report to police. Since then we haven’t been allowed to bury him.”

Morgue official, Sinneh Kamara, said the “majority of the bodies had bullet wounds,” adding that five were policemen and 26 were civilians.

No official toll has been released.

Clashes occurred in Freetown and other cities, such as Makeni and Kamakwie in the north of the country, on August 10 when an economic protest descended into violence between the security forces and demonstrators.

Sierra Leone has had a reputation for relative stability since the end of a brutal 1991-2002 civil war that claimed some 120,000 lives.

Its population of eight million people live in one of the poorest nations in the world, ranking 182 out of 189 countries in the UN’s Human Development Index, a benchmark of prosperity.

The economy, heavily dependent on minerals, was devastated by the war.

Efforts at rebuilding were set back by an Ebola epidemic in 2014-2016, a fall in world commodity prices and the coronavirus pandemic — all of which have disrupted trade and investment and hit exports.

  • Europe storms: Children among dead in France, Austria and Italy

Powerful storms have battered areas of central and southern Europe, killing at least 12 people including three children.

The deaths, most from falling trees, were reported in Italy and Austria, and on the French island of Corsica.

Heavy rain and winds wrecked campsites on the island, while in Venice, Italy, masonry was blown off the bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica.

The storms follow weeks of heatwave and drought across much of the continent.

In Corsica, winds gusting up to 224 km/h (140mph) uprooted trees and damaged mobile homes.

Authorities there said a 13-year-old girl was killed by a falling tree on a campsite.

A 46-year-old man died in a similar incident and a woman in her 70s was killed when her car was hit by the detached roof of a beach hut.

Two other people, a fisherman, 62, and a female kayaker, 60, died out at sea.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who arrived in Corsica on Thursday, said 20 people had been injured – four of them seriously.

Almost 13,000 people were evacuated from several campsites on Thursday evening and sheltered in public buildings, ahead of more expected damage. But authorities said on Friday morning that the night had passed without any major incidents.

Extreme storms have become more frequent recently because of climate change.

Witnesses to the storms said they had been completely unexpected and no warning was given.

“We have never seen such huge storms as this, you would think it was a tropical storm,” restaurant owner Cedric Boell told Reuters news agency.

On the French mainland, some southern areas were hit by power cuts and streets were flooded in the country’s second city, Marseille.

In Austria two girls aged four and eight were killed by a falling tree near a lake in Carinthia.

Later, three women were reported to have died in Lower Austria province, also as a result of a falling tree.

Officials said 13 people had been injured, including five children.

Mr Kwateng said during the meeting of the trio, Atsikpo called the boy to accompany him to a forest, and he obliged, and at the forest the trio killed him, put his body in a sack and conveyed it on a motor bike to the shrine for the rituals.

DCOP Kwateng said at a meeting a witness eavesdropped on their conversation, but did not know who the target was until the disappearance of the boy was noticed.

  • Reading stabbing attack suspect Khairi Saadallah known to MI5

The man held on suspicion of killing three people at a park in Reading was known to MI5, security sources say.

Khairi Saadallah, 25, from the town, was arrested on Saturday and police say they are not looking for anyone else over the terror incident.

Sources told the BBC he is originally from Libya and came to the attention of MI5 in 2019.

One victim has been named as teacher James Furlong – described by his family as “a wonderful man”.

Paying tribute to Mr Furlong, 36, head of history, government and politics at The Holt School in Wokingham, his parents Gary and Janet said: “He was beautiful, intelligent, honest and fun.”

PM Boris Johnson said he was “appalled and sickened” by the attack in Forbury Gardens on Saturday evening.

Counter-Terrorism Policing South East (CTSPE) said a 25-year-old man from Reading, who was arrested initially on suspicion of murder on Saturday, has now been re-arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Security sources said the suspect came to the attention of the security services after they received information he had aspirations to travel abroad – potentially for terrorism, according to the BBC’s home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani.

When the information was further investigated, as the first stage of looking into a potential lead, no genuine threat or immediate risk was identified.

No case file was opened which would have made him a target for further investigation.

The Holt School said Mr Furlong was a “kind and gentle man” with a “real sense of duty”.

In a statement, Anne Kennedy and Katie Pearce – co-head teachers of the secondary school for girls – said Mr Furlong “truly inspired everyone he taught through his passion for his subject and his dedication”.

“He was determined that our students would develop a critical awareness of global issues and in doing so, become active citizens and have a voice,” they said.

Mr Johnson has promised action following the incident “if there are lessons that we need to learn”.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, head of counter-terrorism policing, described it as an “atrocity” and said his “deepest sympathies go to the families who will be mourning loved ones after this horrific act”.

Mr Basu said investigators are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

The accused, Mawuli Gokah, pleaded guilty to all five counts including dangerous driving and four counts of negligently causing harm. He was convicted on his own plea.

Assistant State Attorney, Ms Zennaira Adum-Atta, told the court, presided by Madam Miriam Afoh, that on November 10, 2018, the accused person was driving a Howo Tipper Truck with registration number GN7830-16 from Adeiso-Nsawam with one person on board.

On reaching an axle weighing station at Anoff, he crashed into a KIA Avella Taxi Cab with registration number GR7277-09, trapping the driver, Samuel Addo, and three passengers on board.

  • FBI seeks help identifying America’s most prolific serial killer

Samuel Little, 79, confessed to strangling 93 victims between 1970 and 2005 last year — triple the number of victims that Ted Bundy confessed to killing.

Now, the FBI is asking the public to help identify more victims of the man they say is America’s most prolific serial killer.

Little targeted women, often of marginalized and vulnerable groups, many who were involved in prostitution or suffering from drug addiction. Their bodies sometimes went unidentified and their deaths uninvestigated.

The FBI is hoping to change that.
“For many years, Samuel Little believed he would not be caught because he thought no one was accounting for his victims,” said ViCAP Crime Analyst Christie Palazzolo in a statement. “Even though he is already in prison, the FBI believes it is important to seek justice for each victim—to close every case possible.”

Read:Nigeria arrests suspects over hotel serial killings

That’s where the public comes in. FBI crime analysts believe all of Little’s 93 confessions are credible, but so far they’ve only been able to verify 50 of them.

They’ve released information about five cases on the agency’s website, “in hopes that someone may remember a detail that could further the investigation.”

Each case presented is accompanied by a video of Little explaining the incident and a hand-drawn photo by Little of the woman.

The FBI has used this strategy before, releasing 16 victim portraits Little drew in February.

Read:14-year-old facing five murder charges after confessing to killing his family

Little is currently serving three life sentences in California. Before FBI agents knew about his connection to these dozens of murders, Little was already imprisoned for beating and strangling three women.

Then, in 2018, agents noticed his name popping up in connection to other unsolved murders across the country — especially to one in Odessa, Texas. Texas Ranger James Holland and two FBI crime analysts traveled to California to interview Little over the course of May 2018.

Eventually, Little confessed to killing about 90 people.

CNN emailed the FBI for comment, as well as information on whether his charges are being updated, but we have not received a reply.
