  • KNUST student, police officer accused of gang raping girl granted bail

The High Court sitting in Kumasi has granted bail to an interdicted police officer and a final year student of KNUST, standing trial for allegedly gang-raping a first-year student.

The two have been granted bail in the sum of GH¢80,000 each with two sureties; a relative and a government worker not earning less than a net salary of GH¢1,000 a month.

They were remanded after appearing before the Asokore Mampong District Court in July.

Since the Asokore Mampong District Court lacks jurisdiction in granting bail on the matter, the lawyers for the two accused persons applied for bail at the High Court and has been granted.

The substantive matter which is being heard at the Asokore Mampong District Court has been adjourned to 19th September 2022.

  • Some KNUST students picked up over Katanga, Conti hall clash

Some students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) involved in the campus riot on Thursday, August 18, 2022, have been picked up by Police service to aid with investigations.

The University Relations Officer of KNUST, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, stated that student found culpable will be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

Speaking to the media he said, “I can say for a fact that students who are found culpable from the videos we have put together now will be severely punished. We have so far identified almost 25 people who are our students. Some of the culprits are no longer students, they are former students of the school. Students of the Unity Hall have been surcharged to fix all those properties that have been destroyed.”

“Vehicles belonging to staff that have been vandalised will be fixed and handed back to them. CCTV cameras and other properties belonging to the Unity Hall have been destroyed. The halls will have to pay for all these because if they can allow those outside the school to join in these atrocities, they are the ones to be held liable.”

Students of the University hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti) clashed during a procession by some members of Katanga.

The clash ensued when students of Unity Hall refused to allow students of University Hall to use a route in front of their Hall for a procession.

Eleven people were injured, while nine vehicles belonging to staff of the institution were vandalized.

The clash at KNUST comes as hall rivalries have received scrutiny in the wake of the violence at Mensah Sarbah Hall.

Students of Mensah Sarbah Hall clashed with students from Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana about two weeks ago.

  • CCTV uncovers 5 culprits behind Katanga-Conti clash

Five individuals have so far been identified by a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) as the instigators of the clash on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Thursday .

Some of the students identified, according to reports, are allegedly students from Casely Hayford Hall at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

These students are said to have travelled to Kumasi to be part of the University Hall (Katanga) week celebrations but got  entangled in the brawl.

Some alumni of KNUST, who had visited the campus, were also part of the unfortunate incident.

The university authorities are still reviewing the footages and hope to identify more culprits.

“Those who are not students, we will handover their details to the police. The IGP is so much interested in this matter, because we need to bring a finality to this issue of hooliganism within the universities once and for all,” the KNUST University Relations Officer (URO), Dr Norris Bekoe said.

He said from now on, “any student who is rusticated, or dismissed from the university, we will publish the person’s details, reasons why the person is no longer fit to be our student, and then we will also add photographs and we will circulate this across the major media platforms so parents can identify and know.”

Dr Bekoe confirmed to Graphic Online that five people have been identified through the CCTV footages.

    Hall week activities suspended indefinitely

Meanwhile, the university management has suspended all hall week and SRC week activities on campus indefinitely.

This is following the violent clash between some members of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Continental) on Thursday, August 18, 2022.

Although management has set up a committee to look into the disturbance, it has also banned temporarily the massing up of students of any kind.

  • Police restore calm on KNUST campus following Katanga, Conti hall clash

  • KNUST researchers develop technology to help people escape from inferno

Researchers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have come up with an invention that enables individuals to quickly escape from a building caught on fire.

The invention is a detachable window that holds glass louvres and metal bars together. An individual is able to move all the listed items at once without having to break the glass louvres in order to escape.

Professor Divine Ahadzie, the Head of the Centre for Settlements Studies at the Faculty of Built Environment says the invention is in response to clause 90 of the National Building Regulation (NBR) (L.I. 1630), enacted in 1996.

“The traditional window has been constructed over the years (in a way such that) there is no means of escape for opening.”

“We looked at it critically and saw that there is the need to be able to fabricate this window to be able to respond to that.”

The former Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment called on the stakeholders in private sector to invest and produce these windows on a large scale.

He spoke to Citinews on the sidelines of a 4-day science and technology exhibition as part of KNUST’s 70th anniversary.

Some inventions the school has come up with include a solar-powered traffic light, wireless quiz buzzer, self-driving car using computer vision devices.

The National Building Regulation (NBR) (L.I. 1630) was enacted in 1996 in Ghana to regulate the erection of buildings, alteration of building structures and execute works or install fittings in connection with any building.

Regulation 90 of NBR (L.I. 1630) states the following:

    (1) In the event of fire it shall be possible to escape from every habitable room, shop or workroom by means of at least one opening in addition to the door. The area of this opening shall be not less than 0.40m² and neither the height nor width shall be less than 0.45m² in the clear, the bottom shall be not more than 0.75 above floor level.

    (2) An escape opening shall be considered to satisfy this provision —
    (a) where metal bars, expanded metal or louvres are fitted over the escape opening as a protection against burglary and are fixed to a casement which can be opened and where this casement is locked or padlocked shut, the key is kept in a glass fronted box fixed to a wall of the room at least 1.0m from the opening; or
    (b) where glass louvres are used, they must be capable of being quickly smashed or otherwise removed and flyscreen cut or removed without delay.

    (3) The following requirements for air flow and natural ventilation shall apply also —
    (a) where each external wall of the room is not less than 0.30m thick and exerts a stress of at least 4,311 pascals of vertical superficial area, the total area available for airflow and natural ventilation shall not be less than one-fortieth of the floor area of the room provided that nothing in this provision shall require any part of the opening to be less than 2m above floor level;
    (b) where an external wall located between south-east and south-west or an external wall facing between north-east and north-west is shaded from the direct rays of the sun by eaves or other projection which extends at least 1.2m from the outer surface of the wall —
    (i) the total area available for the airflow and natural ventilation shall be not less than one twelfth of the floor area of the room; and
(ii) the bottom of this opening shall be not less than 1.0m above floor level.

    (4) In all climates where air flow and natural ventilation is through a covered balcony or verandah the area of such an opening shall be not less than one eighth of the combined floor areas of the room and balcony or verandah added together.

  • KNUST reinstates over 3,550 of the 6,000 deferred students

The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has disclosed that it has reinstated over 3,550 of the 6,000 students whose programmes were deferred due to their inability to pay 70 percent of their fees.

According to the authorities, the students who have been reinstated made the required payment during the grace period offered by the university following negotiations with the Student Representative Council (SRC), graphiconline.com.

In an interview with Daily Graphic, the University Relations Office (URO), Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe said that the fees of 2,200 students were paid through the Dean of Students Scholarship Scheme and 1350 paid the fees on their own.

He added that the students who do not make payment during the grace period will have to defer their programme because the university operates an automated system that will automatically take out the names of students who fail to make the required payment.

Meanwhile, the Student Representative Council (SRC) of KNUST, has also offered scholarships to 2380 of the 6000 students who were asked to defer their programmes due to their failure to pay 70 percent of their school fees.

The President of the SRC, Michael Aboah, said that the fees were paid with an amount of GH¢ 50,000 the SRC has raised to support needy students, graphiconline.com reports.

He indicated that the beneficiaries included students who were already on the scholarship scheme of the SRC and needy students who proved they could not pay their fees due to some circumstances.

  • Children at risk of developing cancer through watermelon consumption KNUST scientists find banned pesticides in fruit

Scientists at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have warned that children are at a higher risk of developing cancer by consuming watermelon.

This comes after their findings revealed unacceptable levels of pesticide residues like DDT in watermelon on the market in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Although the organochlorine pesticides are banned for agricultural use, some farmers are using them, a situation which has adverse health effects on consumers.

In an interview with JoyNews, on Thursday, the lead scientist, Prof Nathaniel Owusu Boadi, revealed that since children consume the fruit more, they stand the risk of developing cancer.

“We looked at three of them; banana, pineapple and watermelon. For watermelon, the risk of consumption for adults was low, whereas that for infants was alarmingly high.

“We say alarmingly high because the factor that we got was far greater than one, which means that it is alarming. Also, when we looked at the carcinogenic risk, we also realised that the children are at risk of having cancer by consuming watermelon because of the level of organochlorine pesticide that was found [in the fruit],” he explained.

The scientists assessed the levels of organochlorine pesticide residues in fruits and determine the potential risk associated with the exposure to these pesticides.

For the study, the researchers used about 120 fruits from five communities in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The results showed that although the levels of the pesticides were undetectable in bananas and pineapples, they were above the permissible limits in watermelons, which pose long-term risks to the consumer, especially children.

“Levels of methoxychlor, Aldrin and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) exceeded the maximum residue limits in watermelon.

“Estimated health risk revealed that Aldrin in watermelon could pose potential toxicity to the consumer. Estimated average daily intake for Aldrin was above the acceptable average daily intake.

“The combined health risk due to consumption of each fruit variety was minimal but, the overall health risk index due to consumption of all the fruits was higher than 1, indicating potential health risk to consumers,” the researchers added.

They have called for a regular monitoring of pesticide residue in fruits and the appropriate actions taken to protect consumer health.

  • KNUST SRC sets aside GH¢50,000 to assist needy students pay fees

The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has set aside GH¢50,000 to assist needy students to pay their school fees to help save them from deferring their courses.

Over 6000 KNUST students, representing about 8 per cent of the total student population of 85,276, have had to defer their courses in line with university regulations for non-payment of school fees as required under the fees Credit and Debt Management Policy.

Out of the affected number, the SRC says over 2380 are needy students who have been offered bursaries which are yet to reflect in their accounts.

The SRC President, Michael Aboah said the intervention is for the students who have paid more than 50 per cent of their fees and need a top-up of 20 per cent to be able to continue with their courses without necessarily deferring.

On the issue of the university management’s explanation that some of the students have misapplied their school fees by engaging in sports betting and other business ventures, the SRC President debunked the claim.

    Background

The University Relations Officer, Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe in explaining why the students have not been able to pay their fees alleged that some of them used their monies for other ventures such as sports betting.

Following the intervention by the SRC, the university management has decided to give a reprieve for students who have been affected but can immediately make arrangements to pay.

Below is a copy of statement issued by the University Relations Office on the update

    UPDATE ON STUDENTS’ DEFERRAL

The SRC within last 24 hours has been on its toes to address major issues in relation to students who were unable to meet the University’s 70% payment plan and have received messages of deferral.

It is important to mention that upon engagements and advocacy, the SC has been able to ensure that students who pay their fees will have their deferment reverted.

This therefore comes as a plea to students to take advantage of the opportunity and try to settle their outstanding arrears.

As a result of this, there has been a Help Desk set up at the office of the Dean of Students to address major concems in relation to:

    • Students who paid immediately after the deadlinc/after receiving messages of deferral
    • The 2380 beneficiaries of the SC KBN and KNUST Bursary whose stipend meets the 70% threshold
    • And any other student who received messages of deferment out of a technical hitch but had already
paid for their fees before the deadline.

NB: These categories of students are advised to visit the Help Desk with receipts of payment/award of scholarship to help revert them from deferral.

Students should also note that the 2380 shortlisted beneficiaries of the SC KBN and KNUST Bursary and the successful applicants of the SC Financial Aid Scheme shall have their accounts credited by Monday, 25* April, 2022 to help revert their deferral.

The SRC remains steadfast and committed to use all within its means to address issues. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the secretariat for further information and any concerns.

May we all have the Faith to Finish through these difficult times.

    SIGNED
    KENNETH KELLY DWAMENA
    (PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER)

The Academic Board of the KNUST on Tuesday made it known to the affected students that they were deferring their various programmes for non-payment of academic user fees.

Early this year, the university extended the payment date from March 21 to April 11, to allow the students to honour their obligation.

But, as of last week when mid-semester examinations were starting, the over 6000 students out of the 85,276 had reneged on their promises.

  • Only 110 SHSs have produced medical students for UG and KNUST in 8 years – Addae Mensah

Out of the over 720 senior high schools in the country, only 110 of them have had their students make it to the two traditional medical schools at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana.

Prof Addae Mensah, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana disclosed this in an interview with JoyNews.

While recounting the gains of the schools of origin on 60 years of medical education, the academician said the contributions made by these institutions have been enormous taking into account the quantum and quality of personnel churned out.

Prof. Addae Mensah was, however, worried that little has been achieved in the area of studying medicine as a vehicle for social mobility.

The academician explained “at the last count, we are supposed to have 720 senior high schools in the country. “

“For the period of 2012 to 2020, we have admitted 1,272 to the University of Ghana Medical School. We have admitted similar numbers to the KNUST School of Medical Sciences.

“Of those number of students admitted, they come from just about 110 schools, which means there are 610 schools in this country who have never sent a student to our two medical schools for the past eight years.”

The Professor further revealed that out of the 110 schools that supplied the students for these two flagship medical schools, 5 of them have been dominant.

“Let us take the University of Ghana Medical School. From 2013 to 2020, the 1,272 students, the first 5 schools that are; Wesley Girls School, Presec (Legon), Achimota, Mfantsipim, Holy Child and Prempeh bracket in the fifth position. These five schools alone have produced 50% of the medical students and 18 schools have produced more than 75% of the students in our medical school,” he added.

This means the 25% left is shared among the remaining schools giving them a slim probability of getting any of their students in the medical school.

As to what has accounted for this phenomenon, the renowned professor attributed it to the absence of school facilities that create a congenial atmosphere for learning science and mathematics.

He underscored the need for the provision of science laboratories for the less endowed schools. Professor Addae Mensah reiterated the need to improve facilities in the schools.

Prof Addae Mensah is of the view that rather than set up STEM schools as the government intends to do, it should concentrate effort in replicating what makes the few schools do better in the low-performing schools.

The academician also expressed worry about the general quality of education. He said the Free SHS is only producing quantity and not quality and ought to be reviewed.

The Professor believes that sacrificing quality for quantity is not the way to go.

He wants government to engage all stakeholders to relook and rethink the policy in order to make it more sustainable.

  • See this 1958 graduation photo from the KNUST

In 1958, the setting for a university graduation was obviously not as flamboyant as we have them today but the essence of those events cannot be said to have been any less.

In this supposed photo of a graduation ceremony from the Kumasi College of Technology, now the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of Technology, the graduating class is seen clad in rich kente, representing the great heritage of this country.

A few though, are spotted in their suits and matching flying ties.

With their signature post-independence haircuts to match, these fresh graduates are seen standing, as would be the situation when the National Anthem is being played.

  • KNUST to continue with online teaching and learning despite eased restrictions

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has resolved to go ahead with its planned online teaching and learning for the rest of the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year.

This is despite the easing of the COVID-19 induced restrictions for schools to partially re-open.

The school in a statement after an emergency meeting between its academic board and the Student Representative Council (SRC) on Thursday, June 4, 2020, said the decision was arrived at following concerns over the possible spread of the coronavirus among students.

“The existing arrangements for on-line teaching and assessment for continuing and final year students, as agreed at an Emergency Academic Board Meeting held on 4th May 2020, (for the rest of the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year), should hold. This is in consideration of the fact that more than 80% of assignments and project work which would be used as an assessment for the end of second-semester examinations, have already been completed and submitted for marking. All online assignments and assessments should be completed by 30th June 2020”, school authorities said.

However, students who may have difficulty in accessing the online facilities have been given the option to re-locate to campus from June 15-30, 2020.

Such students have been asked to contact their Heads of Department through their class representatives.

MPhil and PhD students will have their oral examination and defence via Zoom.

Meanwhile, the University says its COVID-19 team will ensure that adequate safety measures will be instituted while students who return to the school are examined.

    Other directives for medical students

The students will be required to take an abridged examination, consisting of theory and clinical assessments which will be organized in small groups, in compliance with the protocol on social distancing.

The assessment will be for a maximum period of three weeks after which the fifth years will report for their session.

  • 34 UCC students arrested on KNUST campus

Thirty-four students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) were on Saturday, February 29, 2020 arrested at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus.

The suspects were rounded up at the university, during the climax of a hall week celebration by students of the Unity Hall of the KNUST.

Police said the suspects failed to explain why they were on the campus at midnight when they were rounded up and thus transferred to the Regional CID in Kumasi.

This comes amid earlier warnings issued by the Ashanti Regional Security Council, declaring KNUST a security zone.

A statement by the Students Representative Council of the UCC on Sunday, 1 March 2020 also said it has “taken initial steps to ascertain the veracity of the situation.”

“Some executives of the SRC, together with the Atlantic Hall President, have visited the police and have begun engagements with the CID in charge of the case”, parts of the statement read.

“All students should remain calm to avoid further aggravation of the situation”, the statement further added.

  • KNUST still a security zone Minister warns students

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been reminded that the declaration of the school as a security zone is still in force.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah on Wednesday wrote to the Vice Chancellor of the University directing him to “uphold” the declaration until further notice.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council declared KNUST a security zone in September 2019 when it got intelligence that some people were plotting to disturb the peace of the University.

The reminder comes at a time some halls of the University were planning to observe their hall week celebrations between late February and early April. It might have been prompted by the bloody clash between two halls during similar event at the University of Cape Coast last week.

“In this regard, anybody who directly or indirectly engages in activities that may disturb the peace on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology campus shall be sternly dealt with in accordance with the law,” the minister warned.

The Regional Security Council has also urged the management of the KNUST to ensure that all activities held in campus do not include demonstration or activities of mass movement that will disturb the peace on the University campus.

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that students are reminded that the declaration of the University as a Security Zone is still in force and must be strictly observed,” the minister said.

Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah added, “Breaches will attract the maximum legal security penalty or sanctions associated with it.”
