  • CSIR-CRI appeals for funding for studies into snake tomato breeding

The Crops Research Institute (CRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has called on the government and other private organisations to come to their aid with financial support to aid them conduct further studies into prospects of the snake tomato plant in Ghana.

The snake tomato plant (Trichosanthes cucumerina) is a gourd vegetable that grows in tropical regions, and it is used for culinary and medicinal purposes.

It is a member of the cucumber family and is called by many names in different parts of the world.

The snake tomato is packed with phytonutrients.

Dr. Michael Kwabena Osei, a Senior Research Scientist and a Vegetable Breeder at the CRI, speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after a field inspection of the trial plot at Kwadaso near Kumasi, underscored the need for agencies and the government to support the research into the plant.

He explained that Ghana could consume the vegetable as a substitute for the traditional tomato, adding that it had almost the same constituents as tomato.

“If we should wake up one day and find out that the tomatoes in the country are not able to survive, and we do not have other substitutes, it is going to be a problem.

“That is why as a Research Institute we go ahead and research and diversify the crops we research on,” he told the GNA.

The Research Scientist said in the last two years the Institute obtained one line from Amanchia in the Ashanti Region to commence the study.

It later sought 30 different lines from the World Vegetable Center and now characterizing them to see which ones could be evaluated, going forward.

This crop, According to Dr. Osei, did not require too much attention as given to tomato, however it took up to four weeks to get matured (from planting to maturity), thrived under sunshine and required little water to produce more.

Other characteristics are that it can either be harvested in the green stage or ripened stage.

In terms of the nutritional and medicinal values, the snake tomato is low in calories, high fiber content, contains vitamins A, B and C, laxative properties, lower blood cholesterol, aid digestion as well as treating constipation.

Dr Osei indicated that in countries like Nigeria, it was mostly used in preparing stews and soups, whereas in Ghana here, the underutilized crop is being patronized by foreigners on the open markets at higher prices.

He submitted that when the needed funding was made available, it would enable the CSIR-CRI to extend the research to the different agro-ecological zones to determine how the crop performs in other parts of the country.

Currently, studies are underway to assess poisonous substances, check biochemical, brix, and other fruit qualities.

The results will inform research scientists during release and make the necessary data available to plant growers.

  • Kumasi International Airport ready in August

Barring any unforeseen delay, the Kumasi International Airport could start operating international flights from August this year, two clear months ahead of the expected time of completion.

In December last year, the contractors working on the airport expansion project, Contracta Construction UK Ltd, told the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) that the project would be completed in October 2022.

However, during a tour of the project by the REGSEC last Tuesday, the Project Manager, Alan Frazeto, told the members that “by September, Kumasi will have an airport that meets international aviation standards and could be ready to start operating international flights”.

This follows the steady progress of work done on the expansion project which started in 2018.

So far, the construction of the terminal, as well as the installation of escalators, the baggage carousel, check-in points and passenger boarding bridges has been completed.

While the total work done in both phases two and three of the project is estimated to be about 82 per cent complete, that of the terminal is about 98 per cent complete.

    Tour

Members of the REGSEC have been visiting all the important project sites in the region on a quarterly basis to appraise themselves of progress of work.

In the first quarter of this year, the team visited all the projects being executed by Contracta in the region, except the phase two of the Redevelopment of the Kejetia Market and the Baby and Maternity Block of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

    Simulation

When the Daily Graphic visited the airport project site last Tuesday, it observed that the contractor was undertaking simulation exercises to test the readiness of installed equipment for a smooth take-off later in the year

The luggage carousel for both domestic and international flights was being fixed and the check-in conveyors tested.

Work was progressing steadily on the new control tower and the utility block that would house the standby generator, fire tenders and other emergency facilities.

Mr Frazeto, who conducted the Daily Graphic around the project, said there had been no major hitch, a situation that had enabled work to progress ahead of the scheduled time of completion, “and barring any unforeseen challenge, the rest of the work currently ongoing should be completed and tested before September”.

    Satisfaction

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, who led the REGSEC team, expressed satisfaction with progress of work and the fact that they might even complete the project before schedule.

He said he was impressed by the level of improvement from what the team had seen in December when it visited the project.

“As they promised, it means we are even going get the project completed earlier than they said. Previously, when we came here with the President, they assured us that by October 2022, we would start receiving international flights.

“Today, we have been informed that by August, we can open up to international travels, which means that they have been able to move faster, and that is excellent and commendable,” he said.

According to Mr Osei-Mensah, almost all the basic facilities required for international flights were available at the airport, saying: “Of the greatest importance to me is that it will have the best scanner, which can even allow flights from here to move directly to the US, something which has been the most difficult eligibility criteria in terms of aviation.”

    Project

The expansion work at the Kumasi International Airport is a €124.9-million project being undertaken by Contracta Construction UK Ltd.

The scope of work includes the extension of the existing runway pavement from 1,981 metres to 2,320 metres, the construction of a new taxi link and apron, two new apron parking stands and an aeronautical ground lighting system.

Others include the design and building of a terminal with the capacity to handle 800,000 passengers per annum, an 11MW substation, as well as the provision of new bulk utility services, independent of the existing utility services for the airport.

Phase three of the project involves the construction of the air traffic control building and a fire station, as well as the expansion of the existing runway pavement.

Meanwhile, when the GNA visited Alabar, the scene of the second incident, some traders were still searching through the rubbles from the fire outbreak to salvage the few undestroyed items left behind.

“I am lost for words. Only God knows the future,” Alhaji Habib Mohammed, one of the affected traders, lamented in an interview.

The fire, according to the Ghana National Fire Service, was detected in the early hours of Sunday, destroying everything within its reach for several hours before it was brought under control.

The intensity of the razing fire was said to have collapsed a section of the storey building housing some units of stores, though there were no casualties.

A market survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi has indicated that prices of most vegetables and foodstuffs, which are in abundance in the markets, have remained the same for some time now, and in some markets, even cheaper.

At the Bantama, Asafo and Abinkyi markets, where a team of GNA reporters visited on Monday and Tuesday this week, a bunch of medium-sized plantain, which is now scarce in the markets, ranges from GH¢15.00 to GH¢25.00.

Madam Abenaa Antwiwaa, who sells cocoyam and cassava at the Bantama market, said prices of cocoyam, cassava and other tubers, always become slightly high, during the new yam season, which were associated with a bumper harvest.

This in her view, she explained, was because the farmers did not want the food crops to flood the markets to force the prices to be very low.

“This is to protect their business,” she added.

  • Kumasi GES dispels rumours of infection in schools

Mr David Oppong, the Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education, has described as false, reports that some final year students who recently returned to school contracted the COVID-19 virus.

The Metropolitan Education Office, he said, had been monitoring events and activities in schools since they were reopened for the final year students to complete their work and write their final examinations.

“Presently, we do not know of any school which has recorded a confirmed case of COVID-19,” he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.

He said the GES working in partnership with the Metropolitan Public Health Committee, had put in place the necessary measures for early detection of signs and symptoms of the disease amongst students.

“We have provided almost every school within our jurisdiction with a thermometer gun for the routine checking of the body temperature of students,” he noted.

Additionally, authorities of the various schools were directed to create isolation centres to take care of students who would show signs of the disease before being sent to the hospital.

Ghanaian schools had for over three months been closed down as the country took measures to contain the spread of the pandemic, which had claimed more than one hundred lives since the country recorded its first two cases on March 12.

With the disease spreading rapidly nationwide, many parents were apprehensive as their wards went back to school to prepare for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Mr Oppong assured parents of maximum protection for their wards, and entreated the public to treat the rumours circulating on social media with contempt.

Police in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, are on a manhunt for a woman who stole a two-week-old baby girl from her mother at about 7:30 am around the Silver Pharmacy area at Bantama, Kumasi, on Wednesday, May 2020.

The mother of the baby whose name was given as Marian Yahaya, 19, claimed that she went to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for wound dressing only to be met by a middle-aged woman, fair in complexion who confronted her for not wearing the face mask to protect her from contracting the coronavirus (Covid-19).

The alleged baby thief advised the nursing mother to hand over the baby to her and get herself a face mask before she could gain access to the KATH premises to which the mother obliged.

Sadly, the mother, who was delivered of her baby through a cesarean section returned with the face mask only to find out that the suspect had disappeared with her baby; all effort to trace her proved futile.

Briefing the media, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, appealed to the general public to be on the lookout for any suspicious middle-aged woman in a possession of a baby girl of about two weeks old and inform the regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) or the nearest police.

  • Coronavirus: Hundreds ignore social distancing as they gather to receive food from NADMO in Asokwa

Hundreds of underprivileged people have gathered today in Asokwa Kumasi to receive food being distributed by the National Disaster Management Organisation( NADMO) as part of government measures to cushion the vulnerable in this lockdown period.

The people jostled to get their fair share of the food as officials from the organization and security agencies tried unsuccessfully to maintain order, let alone observe social distancing.

Government imposed a lockdown in Greater Kumasi and its surrounding areas over two weeks ago as part of drastic measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

But even with the lockdown in force, some people have ignored other measures key to fighting the pandemic such as maintaining social distancing and regular hand washing under running water with soap.

Distribution of food by philanthropists and government agents has been done largely in total disregard for the social distancing protocols proposed by experts to stem the spread of the virus.

Many have condemned the disorderly nature of the distribution of food and other essentials to the vulnerable and underprivileged, insisting that it could become an avenue for the spread of the virus

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has identified, Accra and Tema in the Greater Accra Region and Kumasi in the Ashanti Region as the epicentres of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ghana.

At a press briefing in Accra Tuesday, the Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyeman Manu said: “What we have identified so far in Ghana now, we may have, we can describe two areas in Ghana now as our own epicentres, Accra and Tema together and Kumasi.”

“We are doing what we describe as contact tracing, in Accra we have deployed 98 field officers …that have been trained doing the tracing and we are getting to people.”

The Minister said in Kumasi for instance, about 50 trained people have been employed who are still doing contact tracing.

He, therefore, advised that based on the evidence, “wherever we are, all those our brothers and sisters who have come in, we should advise them to put themselves in self-quarantine if we haven’t tracked them yet.

“And they should also talk to health authorities in the area where they live, to send teams to serve them, they can be calling on telephone describing their conditions to health officers they get in touch with such that, we can protect the rest of the population against community spread, the horizontal spread we are seeing in our country at the moment,” the Minister said.

    New cases

As of Monday night [March 23, 2020], a total of 27 positive cases had been recorded in Ghana with two deaths. There were only 25 existing cases.

“Definitely, not all of them will be critically ill and they are not, some might not be ill at all, but decisions on them will depend on individual case management issue. If you are not even ill, you still have to be quarantined for the mandatory 14 days.”

He said early on, there were indications that if a person tested negative, “we release you after four days but, [based on] technical advice, and we have met all the doctors and we cannot [continue] do that and we have to keep you for the entire two weeks, which is the 14 days.”

He said: “We have adequate rooms in Accra… to actually take care of all those who have tested positive at the moment. But going forward, a team is going round identifying places that we can use for isolation for case management, not only in Accra.”

  • Independence Day: How Kumasi traders spent the night at stadium to secure best spots

Some rather daring traders have shown the real business risk-taking spirit of the Ashanti region bracing the cold night to sleep in the open just to secure the best spots for business during the 63rd independence day commemoration in the regional capital Kumasi.

The traders, some of whom had packed their merchandize in sacks, others covered with tarpaulins around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, ostensibly kept an eagle eye.
