Unpaid dev’t fee could sideline Kwabena Agyepong from NPP’s flagbearer race – Report

Reports suggest that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Kwabena Agyepong, may be sidelined in the upcoming presidential primaries for failing to meet a crucial requirement.

To participate in the NPP’s presidential primaries slated for January 2026, candidates have been directed to pay developmental fees that will assist in facilitating the elections.

However, a Citi News report, Kwabena Agyepong, who doubles as the party’s former General Secretary, has yet to pay the mandatory fees required to secure his participation.

In September, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong expressed strong disapproval of the GH¢4.6 million being collected from presidential aspirants.

He described the act as “morally wrong,” and a deliberate attempt to disqualify contenders. Kwabena Agyepong argued that it is the party’s responsibility to finance the primaries and not those running for the presidential primaries.

“If you are running presidential primaries, it is not the candidates who are supposed to finance the primaries. It is the party’s responsibility to do that. So I was shocked when this so-called development fee appeared.

“There is a subtle attempt to bring back a fee that was rejected at the National Executive Committee meeting. At that meeting, some regional chairmen even suggested GH¢10 million, and another said GH¢5 million. I was shocked. Do they even appreciate what is happening in the country, to mention such huge sums?” he added.

So far, Kwabena Agyepong, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong have been cleared to campaign.

Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26. Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Wednesday, August 27. Former Food and Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong has also filed his nomination forms.

In the meantime, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received strong backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who paid him a visit in June to pledge their support.

Former Energy Minister and running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has decided to throw his weight behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in 2026.

In an interview on Asempa FM on August 26, the former minister noted that he remains grateful to the former Vice President who decided to make him his running mate despite the many individuals who advised him to do otherwise.

According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr Bawumia was engaged countless times by some bigwigs in the party to pick someone else to be his running mate.“I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and upon all the people who were praying for the running mate slot, he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.”

“I know it was a difficult situation, but a lot of people don’t know. Some bigwigs in the party went to Dr Bawumia to tell him not to make me the running mate but he ignored them. There are some names that if I mentioned, you would be shocked. Some even took him to offices to advise him against me but still he chose me,” he remarked.

He thus said; “So, I cannot be ungrateful to him… For those who stood in the flagbearership contest, everyone knows Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but I am still for Bawumia.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made room for new additions to its already approximately 220,000 delegates who are eligible to vote in its presidential primaries slated for Saturday, January 31, next year.

In a statement dated August 26, signed and shared by the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, Williams Yamoah, the party announced that registration has been opened for an additional 60,000 new delegates, which include nineteen new categories of people.

This directive follows reforms adopted at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19. The statement explained: “In accordance with Article 13(1)(11) of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and pursuant to the motion on transitional provisions adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the following new categories of Party officials and dignitaries have been included in the upcoming Presidential Primary voter register.”

The updated voter register, also known as the party album, will now include several new categories of officials and dignitaries. ]

These are all former regional and constituency executives, members of the National Council of Elders, 30 members of the National Council of Patrons, all past national officers, former party-card-bearing MPs and parliamentary candidates, as well as former party-card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers.

Other groups added to the list are external branch executives, former external branch executives, and key members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), including presidents of recognised institutions, the National TESCON Coordinator, regional coordinators, and one TESCON patron from each institution.

Additionally, 10 members from each Regional Council of Elders, 10 patrons from each region, and five members and patrons from each constituency have also been included. The statement directed that “all officers that fall under the categories above are requested to register their names with their respective organisational structures, including the National Secretariat, Regions, Constituencies and External Branches, as applicable, with immediate effect.”

To make the registration process easier, the statement clarified that a digital link would be circulated to External Branch Executives for online registration. All other qualified members were advised to liaise with their respective regions and constituencies to register. However, the forms are to be accessed via the party’s official website.

“The registration form may be downloaded from the Party’s official website. For ease of reference, a sample copy is hereby attached,” excerpts of the statement read.

The statement further warned that the registration was strictly for the aforementioned categories of people, with a deadline set for Friday, September 19.

“The deadline for registration is Friday, September 19, 2025. Please be advised that this registration exercise is exclusively open to officers and members who meet the aforementioned criteria. The Presidential Elections Committee shall undertake a comprehensive verification and validation of the Party’s album to ensure that only an authentic and credible register is used for the conduct of the presidential election,” the party cautioned, while expressing confidence in members’ cooperation.

“We count on your usual cooperation and adherence to this directive in furtherance of the Party’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.”

The NPP is on a journey of reset, reinforcement, and healing following its historic defeat in the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election, with John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing 6,328,397 valid votes, representing 56.55%, against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Since the beginning of this year, the party has undertaken several reforms to position itself strongly against its main opponent, the NDC, and to recapture power.

Among these reforms is the abolition of the electoral college in favour of a broader base of delegates. The party has also added 19 new delegate categories and granted amnesty to suspended members.

The party’s suspended members have been reinstated, and all charges against those facing the disciplinary committee have been dropped.

the National Council took the decision during an emergency meeting held on July 25. In a statement dated August 16 and signed by the Acting National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, members were informed that as part of measures to ensure unity and cooperation, all banned members had been given the right to return.

“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead.I write to inform you that the National Council, at its Emergency Meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved, in the interest of unity and reconciliation, to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate disciplinary bodies,” parts of the statement read.

The party further urged all relevant bodies, including Regional and Constituency Executive Committees, to reinstate suspended members in accordance with laid-down rules and guiding principles.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and nullifies any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” the statement added.

However, the party clarified that this recall does not apply to members who willfully forfeited their membership. In cases where such individuals wish to return, they are required to submit a formal reinstatement request to the party’s secretariat. Upon acceptance, a two-year ban will be imposed, preventing them from contesting in any internal elections.

NPP primaries will be a tough battle; I have grassroots support – Kwabena Agyepong

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has admitted that contesting the opposition party’s presidential primaries will be a difficult race.

While engaging the press on Tuesday, July 29, he justified his remarks by citing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as an individual who has gained recognition for more than 16 years, with massive support from party members.

“It’s going to be tough. I’m not making any bones about it. One of my competitors has been a vice president; he’s been at the top for 16 years, and he enjoys significant visibility and name recognition. I’ve been out of the picture for 10 years, but the kind of support I’m getting from the party’s grassroots is strong,” he stated.

However, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong believes that grassroots support and his 10 years of experience will win the confidence of delegates, adding, “They remember I was one of the young men who helped build this party from scratch. Mind you, I’m the only one among the aspirants who has been elected as General Secretary.”

Several prominent party figures have already publicly signaled their intent to contest, including former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong; and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

The NPP on Tuesday, July 29, opened nominations for its 2028 flagbearer position. Aspirants will pay a whopping amount of GHC100,000 for nomination forms and GHC500,000 as filing fee.

“Any member of the party wishing to apply for nomination as the party’s presidential candidate will obtain the nomination forms after paying a non-refundable Nomination Fee of One Hundred Thousand Cedis (GHc100,000) in Banker’s Draft in favour of the NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY HEADQUARTERS, ACCRA.

“The filing fee for the presidential nomination is five hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc500,000) to be paid in banker’s draft in favour of the NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, ACCRA,” a part of the party’s statement signed by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, read.

Nomination forms may be obtained from the Office of the General Secretary at the Party Headquarters, Asylum Down, from now to August 28. An aspiring presidential candidate shall be required to pay a development fee as determined by the National Council.

This comes after the opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), officially released its presidential primaries timetable on Friday, July 25, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The statement informed interested candidates to pick up their forms by Tuesday. It also noted that by August 28, all forms should have been submitted, as the party is expected to move into the vetting mode by September, approximately a month after they close the flagbearer nomination.

“Nominations will be opened on July 29, 2025, for all persons interested in contesting for the flagbearer to pick their forms. Vetting will be conducted from September 15 to 22, and the election to choose our flagbearer will be held on January 31, 2026.”

The National Executive Committee has urged both candidates and supporters to uphold the tenets of the party to uphold peace and harmony.

“All aspirants and their supporters are reminded to uphold the values of the party and refrain from divisive conduct during the campaign period.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former vice president and the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 election, is widely considered the frontrunner, followed by the former Assin North Member of Parliament and Kennedy Agyapong, a former contender for the flagbearer primaries.

The former vice president has already declared his intention to run again. His popularity among the party’s grassroots is strong, and recent endorsements have added momentum to his campaign.

The earlier-than-usual opening of nominations for the flagbearer position, according to the party, forms part of their restructuring and strategic measures taken to ensure transparency and discipline in the selection process, as well as give ample time to the flagbearer to engage members, stakeholders, and other members of the international community to set the required tone for the 2028 elections.

The nominations’ opening comes about six months ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026. Ahead of the 2016 general elections, the NPP opened nominations in March 2014 and held flagbearer elections on October 18, 2024, marking 25 months ahead of the elections.

However, in 2025, they have declared nomination openings in July and a primary set for January 2026, which is about 35 months ahead of the presidential elections.

According to the party’s constitution, it is required that at least six months’ notice be given ahead of the primaries.

The NPP’s presidential race is expected to be an intense one this time around. Kennedy Agyapong’s position as the strongest contender for Dr. Bawumia has been complemented by a recent survey conducted by Sanity Africa, a Pan-African civil society organisation, between April and June 2025, which showed Kennedy Agyapong leading with 51.4% delegate support, ahead of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who had 42.2%.

Ahead of the flagbearership race, Ken Agyapong has received prophecies about his victory. Ahead of the last two years’ presidential primaries, the four candidates Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh, who vied for the flagbearer position, signed an agreement stating that following the primaries, “candidates will accept election primary results, promote peace and cohesion.”

In the NPP’s previous presidential primaries in November 2023, Dr. Bawumia secured 61.47% of the total votes from nearly 200,000 NPP delegates, emerging as the victor, while Ken Agyapong secured about 37.41%. Dr Bawumia held a meeting with his closest contender at his residence in Accra.

After being announced as the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Kennedy Agyapong threw his support behind Dr Bawumia. “So, party members, we should put everything behind us, and let’s unite this party…, I believe we can break the eight, and that’s what I’ve been preaching,” Kennedy Agyapong said.

Dr Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election. John Dramani Mahama, who ran on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), bagged 6,328,397 valid votes, representing 56.55%, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Meanwhile, ahead of the pending flagbearership race, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has received backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who visited him in June to pledge their support.

“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.

“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as constituency and regional executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” the MMDCEs said in their statement after the engagement.

Also, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on June 19 received 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who announced their endorsement of his bid for the party’s flagbearership position. The delegation ended up having an in-camera meeting with the 2024 flagbearer.
The delegation included former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam; Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah; Member of Parliament for Akuapem North Sammi Awuku; Techiman South legislator Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah; Habib Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tolon; Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, and Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.

I do not hate Ofori-Atta – Kwabena Agyepong

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has dismissed claims suggesting that he harbors any personal animosity towards the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to Mr Agyepong, such reports are blatant lies.

During an interview on Starr FM, Mr. Agyepong said, “Sometimes, people create the impression that I have an issue with him but I don’t.”

He made this known when he expressed the opinion that the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, should have resigned after deciding to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Mr. Agyepong believes that in situations of failure, individuals in positions of responsibility should exhibit humility and step down. He pointed out that Ofori-Atta initially stated that Ghana would not seek assistance from the IMF, but later reversed this stance within a few weeks, opting for a bailout to address the challenges facing the economy.

He argued that in a properly functioning democracy, such actions should warrant a resignation.

He expressed disagreement with the President’s decision to refrain from taking action and instead retain the Finance Minister in his position.

“He [Ofori-Atta] had stood in front of all Ghanaians and said that we were not going to the IMF and did a full U-turn in a couple of weeks. And I said in any decent democracy you stand down as a person. He chose not to go and I disagree with the President for not taking the action to let him go.

“Months down the line the MPs, how many of them 88 [MPs called for his resignation] so I wasn’t wrong. I was just having that foresight, months down the line. So these are difficult things that as Ghanaians as party people we have to deal with,” Mr. Agyepong said.

He continued: “Again it is important that we have the humility that we have been through a lot of difficulties, difficult times, and challenges. Although the government has delivered on several fronts there are other fronts that we have struggled with.”

NPP Primaries: Kwabena Agyepong to climax nationwide tour in Ashanti Region

A hopeful presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, will conclude his nationwide tour on Tuesday, August 22nd, by meeting with Super Delegates of the Ashanti Region in Kumasi.

His 9-day journey covered various locations, including Accra, Dambai, Ho, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Techiman, Sunyani, and Goaso. The purpose of the tour was to engage with the party’s delegates ahead of the NPP Super Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, August 26.

While addressing delegates in the Oti Region, Agyepong reiterated his commitment to lead a streamlined and efficient government should he be elected as the country’s President.

He further expounded on his 6 Point Plan, emphasizing his determination to reduce wastefulness in public procurement by ensuring optimal Value For Money. Agyepong also noted that his vision of ushering in a “NEW DAWN” has been positively received by the general populace.

“If I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be President, I’ll be substantially different. I don’t see why there should be a Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs or Ministry of Chieftaincy. It used to be a Secretariat at the Presidency.”

“So there are many things I want to see cut, especially when we are going through very tough economic times. It is not the quantum of money you save by reducing the number of Ministries per se but it is the strong moral message you send to the country that as government we’re tightening our belt, leading by example, and walking the talk,” he said.

At Ho in the Volta Region, Ing Agyepong called on the delegates to eschew materialism, resist the monetization of politics, instead he entreated them to vote for values, virtues, principles and reward long dedicated service to our great party. He told delegates that they have a sacred responsibility to deliver a brighter future to generations unborn.

Ing Agyepong added that if elected President he will demonstrate exemplary leadership in order to carry the country along as we implement austerity measures to set the economy back on a path of sustainable growth.

“Its time for a drastic departure from the status quo, business as usual and more of the same will not work for the Npp in 2024” he told the delegates.

Meeting the delegates of the Central Region in Cape Coast the aspirant insisted that the party needs a lease of new life by electing a Flagbearer who represents a NEW DAWN in order to enhance the party’s chances of winning the elusive third consecutive term in the 2024 general elections.

Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong who was Press Secretary to President JA Kufuor and a former NPP General Secretary maintained that he has the skills set and relevant experience to help retain power for the party.

“We need an energetic and decisive leader to reconnect with our party base and earn the trust of the Ghanaian people. I humbly submit that I offer that hope of a fresh start for Ghana.”

‘We cannot as politicians preach one thing and do another’ – Kwabena Agyepong on Cecilia Dapaah’s ‘looted’ cash

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwabena Agyepong, has faulted former Sanitation Minister Cecelia Dapaah for keeping a colossal amount of money in her home, which she is currently unable to account for.

In an interview on JoyNews, Mr Agyepong noted that under the dispensation of the digitalization agenda drive, the former minister should have known better to store her funds with a financial institution rather than her residence.

Expressing his disappointment, he noted that Madam Cecilia Dapaah swayed away from the very ideas her government has been propagating.

“What for me I worry about, especially with this case, was the fact of the amount of money that was found in the household…Suffice it to say I was disappointed that that amount of money was in the household. It’s important that we realise that we cannot, as politicians, preach one thing and do another,” he said.

“So when you’re encouraging everybody to be part of the formal economy, the least we can do as leaders is to lead by example. So I was disappointed that she would keep that amount of money in the household. It is important that as political leaders, we should have the political will to do the right thing for our country,” he stated.

However, Mr. Agyepong noted that he would refrain from making judgments about the former minister as relevant state agencies are currently conducting investigations into the origin of the money.

“I’m not prepared to pass judgment on her. Like others are doing, not at all. It is not my duty now. The state has agencies that have to look out for how she came by that money.”

The police have amended the charge sheet against the seven accused persons who are standing trial for the theft case.

They are Patience Botwe, 18, hairdresser; Sarah Agyei, 30, unemployed; Benjamin Sowah, 29, plumber; Malik Dauda, 34, unemployed; Christiana Achab, a trader; Job Pomary, a mechanic; and Yahaya Sumaila, an excavator operator. They are facing 14 counts of conspiracy, stealing, and dishonestly receiving.

They are alleged to have stolen $1 million, €300,000 and millions of Ghana cedis from the former minister’s residence at Abelemkpe in Accra between July and October 2022.

Sarah Agyei and Christiana Achab, who are said to be nursing mothers, have been granted bail of GH¢1 million each with three sureties. The sureties are required to deposit their Ghana Cards with the court registrar and not travel outside the jurisdiction. The rest of the accused persons have been remanded in custody pending further investigations.

The prosecution has indicated that the Attorney General’s office will take over the case after full investigations are concluded. The defence lawyers have argued that their clients are innocent until proven guilty. The court has also asked the lawyers of the accused mothers to provide proof of their claim and shown a six-month-old baby who is under the care of a caregiver.

The eighth accused person, Franklin Sarakpo, is still on the run. The father of Patience Botwe, Kweku Botwe, who was among the five persons initially arraigned, has been discharged following the Attorney General’s advice on the case.

The case has been adjourned to August 22, 2023 by Her Honour Afia Owusuaa Appiah.

Visually impaired historian predicts an end to Kwabena Agyapong’s political career

A visually impaired historian has asserted delegates will show aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, the exit in the upcoming special delegate congress, scheduled for August 26, 2023.

Duodu The Historian, as he is affectionately called, said delegates will punish Mr Agyapong for spreading “anti-party” messages during his ongoing campaigns.

Kwabena Agyei Agyapong is conducting an anti-party campaign and he is annoying party members with that,” he said.

Duodu asserted that all aspirants seeking to lead the NPP, including Mr Agyapong will be campaigning based on the track record of the current administration. Therefore, anyone who makes comments that put the current administration in a bad light, is shooting himself in the foot.

“There are a lot of factors that can influence his defeat; like things he did when he was the General Secretary of the party and how he existed [which party members have still not forgiven him for], in addition to his anti party campaign and I hope delegates are taking this into account and they will show him the exit on August 26, 2023,” he added.

Kwabena Agyepong declares himself ‘only eligible flagbearer of NPP’

A potential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Agyepong, has asserted that he is the most fitting candidate to guide his party to success in the 2024 elections.

The aspiring presidential candidate of the NPP articulated that the individuals being projected as potential winners of the party’s presidential primary are closely associated with the current struggling government. Consequently, he emphasized the necessity of revitalizing the fortunes of the NPP by introducing a change in leadership.

During the official launch of his campaign in Accra on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, Kwabena Agyepong made these remarks, highlighting the importance of changing the trajectory of the NPP’s fortunes by distancing the party from individuals associated with the current struggling government.

The NPP flagbearer hopeful further added that his party and the entire country needs a new face and a pair of clean hands to steer the affairs of the nation and he had all these prerequisites.

“The Akufo-Addo government despite chalking successes in road and health infrastructure, tourism and of course education, it has struggled to deliver on a number of fronts. We started out saying that we are breaking dependency on Western donor agencies. The slogan ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ rang from the Jubilee House with intensity and vigour but today, we lie on a stretcher. Before the International Monetary Fund, the IMF, Ghana has become in the eyes of many a case study for how not to do it.

“Our party the NPP therefore, cannot afford to put forward those who led us to this stage and expect Ghanaians to embrace during the 2024 election. We need a new face, a pair of clean hands, a leader to reconnect with our base and earn the trust of Ghanaians.

“I humbly submit, I, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong offer the hope of a fresh start for Ghana. I’m not a newcomer. I did not join our great tradition midstream after the danger had abated. I have served this party right from the get-go and in many capacities. I was there when it mattered most and also when the party was at the peak of its glory. I gathered valuable experiences doing so,” Kwabena Agyepong said during his campaign launch.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party announced that all ten of its flagbearer hopefuls have been cleared to contest in the race after vetting.

The clearance allows the 10 candidates to engage in the Super Delegates Congress of the NPP, where the number will be shrunk to only 5 candidates. It is this final-5-candidate list that will be presented to NPP delegates to vote on for a presidential candidate towards the 2024 general elections.

The 10 candidates include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey, a former Minister of Trade, Alan Kyerematen, MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former General Secretary of NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former MP for Offinso North, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, a former Energy, Minister, Boakye Agyarko, a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh and businessman, Kojo Opoku.

A new Ghana – one that tackles the numerous current challenges be it socio-economic or political has been promised by flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwabena Agyepong.

On Tuesday, July 11, Mr Agyepong provided elaborate details of what the new era he seeks to achieve will entail while speaking to an audience at the launch of his 2024 campaign at the Silicon Production House at Tesano.

He plans to undertake six actions to build a ‘better’ Ghana. They are as follows:

    1. A lean wholly downsized government, one that works efficiently and effectively to
deliver to the aspirations and expectations of the Ghanaian people. The Ministries will
be reconfigured to align with the constitutional Cap of 19 Cabinet to be assisted by an
equal number of deputies in addition to the 16 in the regions making up a team of 54.
Stakeholder consultations will be undertaken to introduce an upper limit of 9 Judges on
the Supreme Court and possibly remove the retirement age of 70 and allow Supreme
Court judges to serve until they are unable to perform their functions.

    2. Enforcing Law and Order, imposing Discipline and ensuring Compliance of Rules
and Regulations. A Zero Tolerance policy anchored on a drastic penalty regime coupled
with a strong political will to punish those who tinker with the public treasury. The Law
should work to uproot corruption, protect individual and property rights.

    3. Cutting waste in the public sector by ensuring that there is Value for Money in public
procurement and here I will draw heavily on my engineering background to facilitate
the freeing up of vital resources to support the empowerment of the youth through
technical education, entrepreneurship, and small business start-ups.

    4. Restore Meritocracy and Professionalism to the Civil and Public Services by
significantly reducing unbridled politicization and interference. It is time to end the
wasteful seminars, workshops, fora, and expensive retreats and rather move into
implementation mode, utilising the recommendations of the huge volumes of reports
    gathering dust.

    5. Urban Regeneration and Renewal. The current Urban Ecosystem is dysfunctional. A
structured, coordinated, and integrated approach must be adopted and implemented to
create more liveable cities and human settlements where basic needs do not become a
permanent dream. A Technical Advocacy Committee TAC of the Professional bodies
within the Built Environment (Surveyors, Planners, Architects and Engineers) will be
set up to help resolve the challenges thereof.

    6. Entertainment and Sports. In the Creative Arts, the issue of protection of intellectual
property and copyright is dear to me. Creatives need to be empowered to own their
work and earn a decent living from their talent. It is a sector that has the potential to
absorb our teeming youth and it is my dream to see creatives thrive in Ghana. My
passion for sports is public knowledge, nevertheless, Ghana cannot be the jack of all
sports and master of none. Soccer, Boxing and Athletics will obviously be priority with
a focus on school sports and Colts soccer. We have got to revive interest in our Premier
League and restore the organic link between communities and traditional football teams
and of course the all-important role of Government in football administration in Ghana.

  • Underdogs win all the time – Kwabena Agyepong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyepong says he remains unperturbed about not being considered a front runner in the party flagbearer race.

While launching his 2024 campaign at the Silicon Production House at Tesano, Mr Agyepong noted that he is poised for victory irrespective of the assertions of individuals and projections made by relevant authorities.

“Underdogs win all the time, it happens so don’t worry that I’m not seen as front runner,” he said.

The latest July 2023 national poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken a 3% lead among all voters to emerge as the preferred candidate for the NPP in the 2024 election following the launch of his campaign.

The poll indicates that 36% of voters prefer Dr. Bawumia, while 33% prefer Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten (AKK) and 25% prefer Kennedy Ohene Agyapong (KOA).

Among NPP voters, Dr. Bawumia leads with approximately 50%, followed by Mr. Kyerematen with 33% and Mr. Agyapong with 16% of the vote.

In the event of a runoff among NPP voters, Dr. Bawumia leads Mr. Kyerematen by 55% to 45%. However, among all voters, Mr. Kyerematen leads Dr. Bawumia by 54% to 46%.

Despite this projection, Mr Kwabena Agyepong believes his plan to usher Ghanaians into a new era where there is a downsized government, law enforcement, a vibrant public sector, among others will win the votes of electorates.

  • There is too much impudence in Ghana and no one is working to stop it – Kwabena Agyepong

There is too much impudence in Ghana and no one is working to stop it – Kwabena Agyepong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyepong, has bemoaned the lawlessness in the country, impeding the substantial development of the country as a whole.

During the launch of his 2024 campaign at the Silicon Production House at Tesano, Accra, on Tuesday, Mr Agyepong indicated that the relevant authorities have turned a blind eye, hence allowing moral decay and economic instability to foster.

In his speech, the former NPP General Secretary said “There is too much impudence in this country and it’s been seen and nobody gets punished.”

He cited the lack of enforcement of laws as the bedrock for Ghana’s retrogression.

“Ghana has practiced almost every economic module but it’s the lack of implementation, enforcement of our own regulation. That has brought us where we currently are.”

“My heart has been troubled over the direction of our country,”he added.

In view of this, Mr Agyepong promises a new dawn where “there will be zero tolerance for these things.”

He continued: “There will be a political will to drive the process so that no one can steal the government’s money and walk away.”

Mr Agyepong noted that money saved can be used to grow the agricultural sector where start-ups are provided credit facilities.

He therefore entreated Ghanaians to give him the nod come 2024 polls and support his agenda for a new era.

Also, Mr Kwabena Agyepong has called for a new crop of patriotic citizens in the new Ghana he seeks to build.

  • You have done nothing extraordinary for the NPP – Kwabena Agyepong tells Ken Agyapong

You have done nothing extraordinary for the NPP – Kwabena Agyepong tells Ken Agyapong

Former general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong has remarked that no one can claim to be the party’s principal funder because the party has been sponsored at various times by different people for various reasons.

This is in response to a recent back and forth with Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, over the latter’s claim that he supported the party with a US$3m loan in 1992.

Kwabena had earlier disputed the claim citing the logistical challenges that he was privy to in 1992 and the unfavourable political conditions at the time.

In the wake of confirmation of the transaction by a partner of the Assin Central MP, Mr. Oppong Bio, Agyepong has conceded that he may have been oblivious to certain details but that it was immaterial to the extent that the party is supported by all members with the capacity so to do.

    Kwabena Agyepong and Ken Agyapong

“He mentioned the names of persons including President Kufuor, indicating that President Kufuor led them to take a loan for Adu Boahene’s campaign. President Kufuor is alive and so is Kwame Mpianin…I don’t want to go further into the matter.

“If you claim certain things happened and some persons are aware, it is possible. But don’t go about bragging that you initiated it and paid off a loan for campaigns in 1992.

“There are a lot of people who have supported the party in one way or the other”, he said.

  • Frimpong-Boateng’s galamsey report must not be taken lightly – Kwabena Agyepong

Frimpong-Boateng’s galamsey report must not be taken lightly – Kwabena Agyepong

An aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has said that if he were President Akufo-Addo, he would have promptly taken actions regarding Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng‘s galamsey report.

In a report presented to the Chief of Staff in March 2021, the former Minister of Science, Environment, Technology and Innovation accused some NPP officials of engaging in and promoting illegal mining.

But Kwabena Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the NPP seeking to be elected the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election, says action on the report should be taken immediately, adding that the report should not have been on the desk of the President for two years without attention.

Speaking to Nhyira FM’s Nana Jantuah on Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Kwabena Agyepong said “that report will not lie on my desk for two years without attention if indeed he did.”He however said Prof. Frimpong-Boateng could have come out boldly to tell the President to implement some recommendations in the report and resign if the President failed to do so.

“Why has Prof taken so long? Now that you are out people would say it is because you are no more (in government) that’s why you are coming out now. I would have expected that when he was the Minister then, the firm action would be to come out to Cabinet that I want to do this and that and if the President says he wouldn’t agree, then he resigns,” he opined.

Meanwhile, Mr. Agyepong says he will put a moratorium on surface mining, including community mining, to regenerate the forests in the country should he become President. He says the only mining activity he would approve as President is deep mining which involves huge capital to make sure mining is done sustainably.“I have said that mining has not been good for Africa. What has Ghana gotten from mining? Go to where we mine in the country and you will see abject poverty. I don’t like the galamsey at all,” he said.

  • Why Kwabena Agyepong declined a deputy ministerial job

Kwabena Agyepong who served as Press Secretary to former president John Agyekum Kufuor between 2001 and 2006 has said he declined a ministerial appointment offered to him by his boss after serving for almost six years.

The decision to not accept the appointment, according to Kwabena Agyepong was informed by the quest to exit from the administration and focus on some other equally important activities.

“It was fine,” he said in response to whether or not it was a peaceful exit. “I just felt I had to leave politics, so, although the president called me and offered me a deputy ministerial position, I respectfully declined.”

Sharing his work experience with the former president, Mr. Agyepong told Deloris Frimpong Manso on The Delay Show that his boss was indeed a diplomat.

“Mr. Kufuor is a very quintessential diplomat and democrat. He worked with the IGP the previous government appointed for over six months when he assumed office. Persons who occupied some of the key positions experienced same. He did so just to get a smooth transition,” the former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remarked.

Meanwhile, Agyepong has said he never acquired any property during his tenure as Press Secretary to Mr. Kufuor.

Establishing that the desire to do politics was borne out of passion, selflessness, and service to the country, Agyepong expressed optimism in becoming president of Ghana as he readies to contest in the NPP presidential primaries.

“Our budget is always in deficit; we need to cut our coat according to the size of cloth we have. We need to be truthful to Ghanaians for instance if we cannot construct new roads and put together a proper plan review. We like constructing new things without providing any form of maintenance for the old ones.

“The value system in this country has disappeared, it has collapsed. Those are the changes I believe it is time for a new dawn, a new dimension, and a new direction,” Mr. Agyepong said while underscoring the need to serve instead of amassing wealth to the detriment of the Ghanaian people.

  • NPP Flagbearership Race: Kwabena Agyepong tours diaspora chapters; preaches “New Dawn”

An aspirant for the flagbearership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has started a tour of the diaspora chapters of the Party to share his vision of a” New Dawn”, “New Dimension” and “New Direction” towards rallying support for his campaign.

“Ghana is really at the crossroads and what the country urgently needs now is the crack of a ‘New Dawn’ of astute political leadership with a vision that inspires hope in the youth, rejuvenates our political base and rekindles the faith of Ghanaians in our constitutional democracy.”

Addressing the Los Angeles Chapter of the NPP in the United States, on Sunday, Mr Agyepong described his cause as a “redemption mission”, in a news brief to the Ghana News Agency.

He said his vision was: “To create a critical mass of patriots needed to generate the momentum required to cause a seismic shift in the thinking and orientation of what public service and party politics should mean to politicians, political appointees, civil servants and indeed all our countrymen.”

Mr. Agyepong said the NPP needed to aspire for a “new deal, new dimension, and new direction” led by a generational leader “who is courageous, committed, compassionate and competent”.

“In all humility, I trust I fit the bill and hopefully with your support, we can create a broad coalition of the willing to help mobilise a groundswell of grassroots support for our project to rescue our motherland Ghana.

“The aim is to restore the cherished values of service, sacrifice and selflessness back into our body politic,” Mr. Agyepong said.

He reiterated his commitment to working hard to win the NPP presidential primaries, and subsequently the hearts and minds of Ghanaians towards obtaining a historic third term in the 2024 General Election.

“We have a sacred duty to recalibrate and reawaken all Ghanaians to set us on a path to deliver meaningful progress and prosperity for our long suffering underserved population. Let us do this together now,” Mr Agyepong told members of the chapter.

He is expected to attend the opening plenary of the 2020 Convention of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) going on in Anaheim California.

From there, he will be the special guest of the NPP UK branch on Sunday October 30th at the Dominion Centre, Wood Green, London.

  • Payment of ex-gratia must be halted immediately – Kwabena Agyepong declares

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Kwabena Agyepong, has advocated for the payment of ex-gratia every four years to Article 71 officeholders to be scrapped immediately.

He stated in an interview with Accra-based Joy News that the country does not have the financial resources to support such payments.

Agyepong contended that persons such as Members of Parliament can be given “something little” after serving their terms in office but it should not be in the current lump sum even for MPs who return to Parliament.

He listed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin together with Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader and Suame MP) and Kobina Tahir Hammond (Adansi Asokwa MP) as people who have benefited greatly from payment of ex-gratia over the years due to their long stay in the legislature.

He said such payment were not right on any moral standing stressing that it should halt with immediate effect.

“Ex-gratia should be like a parachute payment. When you have served your country like a member of Parliament…it’s a difficult assignment. I would say it is like marriage. When you elevate a lady to certain level as a wife and you want to leave, that’s why they let you pay alimony.

“You have to support her. You cannot allow her just to drop because you are leaving. That’s not right. It is not fair. You make somebody an honorable Member of Parliament, he served when he is going home, something little. Maybe he can take the car away,” the former NPP General Secretary said on October 6.

“…not after every four years. I never understood that. If you are coming back it cannot be ex-gratia. I see the Speaker and the likes of Kyei Mensah, they must have benefited a lot. My good friend KT Hammond…that is not right. It cannot be right on any moral standing. We should stop it immediately. We don’t have the money as a country,” he added.

Mahama, NPP “clash” over payment of ex-gratia

Former President Mahama while speaking to a gathering of NDC lawyers pledged to implement recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee as well as review ex-gratia payments in the next NDC administration

“The next NDC government must commit to the implementation of the review of the 1992 Constitution, which was begun by President John Evans Atta Mills of blessed memory. This review should among others aim at reforming the judiciary and tackle head-on issues on ex-gratia payments and other matters of Article 71 emoluments” Mahama said.

Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, however, said Mahama benefited from ex-gratia payment to the tune of GH¢14 million in 2013 – a claim the office of the former president has denied.

Abronye DC also said Mahama cannot scrap the payment of ex-gratia because he “loves ex-gratia more than his wife Lordina”.

The NPP in press conference also said the promise by Mahama was mere political rhetoric aimed at swaying voters.
