  • Will Ghana collapse if no registration exercise is held? – Pratt questions EC

Editor-in-Chief of Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has slammed the Electoral Commission (EC) for refusing to postpone or cancel the voters’ registration exercise.

The EC commenced the new voters’ registration exercise on Tuesday, June 30 despite opposition to stop the exercise.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) filed a lawsuit against the EC but the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of the electoral management body empowering it to conduct the registration exercise amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In spite of the EC’s assurances to Ghanaians that it will enforce the COVID-19 safety protocols, Ghana’s case count keeps increasing.

The country’s case count has risen to over 25,000 and over 21,000 people have been declared recovered or discharged and 139 people have unfortunately lost their lives.

There are however consistent calls on the EC to call off the ongoing registration exercise.

Kwesi Pratt is also unhappy with the seemingly adamant posture of the EC, asking why the Commission wants to risk the lives of Ghanaians all in the name of compiling a new voters’ register.

“If we had not conducted this voter registration exercise, would Ghana collapse?” he questioned.

He appealed for the registration exercise to be possibly canceled to protect Ghanaians against the deadly disease.

“This pandemic disease has spread across the nation and we are saying we should go and register irrespective. When you oppose it, they will say you don’t want to register but you will go and vote during the elections. Why? If we don’t do the register but only go and vote, you have minimized the risk maybe by more than 50%. So, minimizing the risk is also important”, he said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’.

  • Registration exercise too risky; be advised & cancel it – Kwesi Pratt to EC

Kwesi Pratt has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to draw lessons from the unfortunate situation of the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, and curtail plans to compile a new register.

The Health Minister of Health is on admission at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), receiving treatment for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo disclosed the health status of the Minister and wished him speedy recovery, during his 11th update on COVID-19.

“Let us also wish our hardworking Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, MP for Dormaa Central, a speedy recovery from the virus, which he contracted in the line of duty and is in stable condition,” the President said.

Contributing to Peace FM’s political programme ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt noted that despite all preventive measures adopted by the Health Minister, he couldn’t become immune from the virus and to him, the EC shouldn’t think their measures are foolproof to secure the lives of the participants in the new voters’ registration exercise.

According to him, the Commission will be exposing the electorates to the pandemic disease and endangering the lives of many Ghanaians.

He therefore has asked the EC to stop the mass registration exercise scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 30 this year.

“The Health Minister, himself, is in the hospital. Meanwhile, there’s nobody in Ghana who can tell that the Minister in charge of health didn’t comply with the President’s directives. He followed them; he wore face mask. He has done the social distancing and so forth but he’s infected…Unless you want to tell me the Minister didn’t adhere to the preventive instructions that were given by the President. He complied with it but he is in hospital and now the President says we should pray him. And we’re praying for him to fully recover. So, it’s too risky,”he emphasized.

  • When you hear Mahama’s name, corruption and “Dumsor” come to mind – Kwesi Pratt claims

Ghanaian Journalist and managing editor at the insight newspaper and the Convention People Party (CPP) member has descended heavily on the former President, John Dramani Mahama and his NDC Party after them protesting against the new voters register compilation which it’s piloting is ongoing.

Kwesi Pratt speaking, he said John Dramani Mahama is only willing to come back to power not the interest of the citizens but rather he is coming back to power in his own monetary gains because he is broke after he was elected out of power so he is finding ways and means to get back to his old ways.

Kwesi Pratt expressing his disappointment in the NDC, he said; John Dramani Mahama is the most corrupt President Ghana has ever gotten due to what other Presidents developed with the likes of, Jerry John Rawlings introducing Polytechnics, John Agyekum Kuffuor introducing National Health Insurance and President Akufo Addo introducing Free SHS and what Ghanaians remember of John Dramani Mahama is, “Dumsor” and Corruption. He lamented

He later descended on Asiedu Nketiah the General Secretary of the NDC after saying that without or with the new voters register they will come out victorious in upcoming Elections and still protesting against it, he claimed it is very controversial of the NDC Party.

  • Kwesi Pratt walks off ‘Kokrokoo’ show after ‘friendly fire’

Panel discussions on Peace FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ is not only educative and informative, but oftentimes emotional with a bit of friendly heckling now and then.

However, during Friday’s edition of the award-winning programme, Kwasi Pratt Jnr felt the interjections were unruly and deliberate.

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper who was on the show with NPP’s National Youth Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and Head of the Monitoring Unit of the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu, abdicated his seat at the tail end of the programme and walked away; leaving the discussion for the other two.

The issue on the table was the controversies surrounding the new voters’ register amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

  • EC is not a ‘god’; Let them not think they have unfettered powers – Kwesi Pratt

Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt has chastised the Electoral Commission over their decision to compile a new voters’ register despite oppositions from Civil Society Groups, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political actors in the country.

To him, the country’s electoral body is putting on airs of a “god”, acting as if it has “unfettered powers”.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has slated the end of June to commence the registration exercise to compile the new register.

But the NDC has dragged the EC to the Supreme Court seeking an order for the Commission to rescind its decision to use only the Ghana card and passport for the exercise, and has also challenged the compilation of the new voters’ register.

The party is praying the court to direct the EC to include ”all existing voter identification cards duly issued by the 2nd Defendant (EC) as one of the documents serving as proof of identification for registration as a voter for the purposes of public elections”.

The NDC also seeks a declaration on whether the EC “can only revise the existing register of voters, and lacks the power to prepare a fresh register of voters, for the conduct of the December 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections”.

Bernard Mornah, a leader of the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register (IPRAN), has also threatened to disrupt the registration exercise should the EC fail to address their grievances.

The electoral body is however unfazed by the threats and opposition to their decision, and has announced measures to kickstart the registration exercise in June irrespective of these agitations.

Addressing the brouhaha about the new voters’ register on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt stated that the EC’s adamant behaviour is indicative of the Commission’s lack of the neutrality.

According to him, the Commission needs to be reminded that their mandate as the election management body was given to them by Ghanaians, although set up within the confines of the constitution and so they have to pay a listening ear to all parties.

”The Electoral Commission is enjoined by Article 45 to work within the limits of the law…The court can stop the Electoral Commission…The Electoral Commission doesn’t have unfettered powers,”, he challenged.

Again, he stressed on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ that ”the Electoral Commission is not a god. It’s a constitutional institution that we, Ghanaians, have allowed to be set up. We have accepted the establishment of the Electoral Commission. So, it is the duty of the Electoral Commission to listen to Ghanaians and cannot do whatever they like. They are not allowed. They’re bound by law. They’re bound by the constitution and others to do what is proper”.

  • Coronavirus peak: Stop ‘disrespecting’ us, we ain’t shallow minded – Pratt fumes

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr says health experts and leaders in the country should spare the ears of Ghanaians about the disease having reached its peak and likely to go down.

Despite the number of high cases recorded in Ghana, health experts and leaders maintain that the country has reached the peak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection curve.

We’ve peaked but not out of the woods

Dr Ebenezer Badu Sarkodie, the Director of Public Health, Ghana Health Service (GHS), on Thursday explained that Ghana attained its highest confirmed cases of COVID-19 on April 25, 2020, indicating its peak period.

He, however, added that this doesn’t mean the country is “out of the woods” and so entreated Ghanaians to keep following laid-down protocols to curb the pandemic.

    Facts don’t support claims

Touching on the COVID-19 pandemic issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt stated that the data and facts don’t support claims of the disease likely to dwindle.

Referring the leaders to the current case count which has shot up to over 4,000, he asserted that there is no way the country is going to experience a downward trend in transmissions since the health centres are about to even undertake daily testing of the virus to find out new community infections.

    Stop the disrespect

He registered his disappointment in the country’s COVID-19 response team for suggesting that the disease will slow down and admonished them to stop taking Ghanaians for a ride.

”How do you tell me the disease is slowing down? We’ve moved from 1 to 2, 3 and even reached 3000 and beyond, then you come to tell me the disease is going down. Do you think I have a shallow mind?”

”…you come to stand before Ghanaians telling them the disease is diminishing, what should we tell you? It means you don’t respect us…if we are not doing daily testing, on what basis do you come to tell us this is going down?” he rhetorically asked.

Mr. Pratt feared a second wave of the pandemic will be extremely dangerous than the current wave in the country.

”It is most likely that there will be a second wave and that if you follow all pandemics of this nature, there is a second wave. And that the second wave is likely to be more devastating than the first wave. In fact, when you take a critical look at the flu pandemic, the second wave killed far more people even than the first wave and so on. If you’re faced with all these facts and our leaders keep deceiving us that we shouldn’t panic because the disease has reached its peak and so it’s coming down, coming down from where?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s COVID-19 cases have increased to 4012, according to the Ghana Health Service.

Per the update on Friday, May 8, 2020, the number of recoveries has risen to 323.

The death toll remains at 18.

This means over 900 cases have been recorded in less than 48 hours.

According to the statement on the GHS website, “over 50% of these cases were as a result of an outbreak in an industrial facility with 1,300 workers of which 533 have been confirmed positive. Over the same period, 20 more recoveries have been reported.

“Bono Region has recorded a case and thus 13 out of 16 regions have reported cases. Currently, the only regions with no confirmed cases of COVID-19 are the Savannah, Bono East and Ahafo regions.”

  • Smoking marijuana actually kills coronavirus – Kwesi Pratt stunned by new study

Kwesi Pratt, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, is utterly shocked by a new study that indicates nicotine could prevent infection and serious illness from coronavirus.

A recent French study has indicated that nicotine is helpful in guarding against coronavirus, functioning as an anti-inflammatory agent that kills the virus.

Nicotine is a stimulant and alkaloid poison in tobacco and used for smoking.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, the seasoned Journalist was amazed to find out smoking helps in both prevention and recovery against the current pandemic.

“It blew my mind. It blew my mind completely. When the disease started, we were told that if you smoke, the likelihood to contract the disease is very strong and your recovery is not as good as the non-smokers and so on…Just last week, according to a French scientist’s research, they have discovered that nicotine is good against COVID-19 meaning smoking marijuana is helpful. So, how do you deal with this situation because the earlier protocol was that smokers should stop smoking? French scientists are on the other hand saying smoking helps because the nicotine is good,” he said.

Although nicotine may help in fighting the virus, doctors have cautioned that it is not a license to pick up a smoking habit.

  • 307 ambulance ventilators cannot be better response to coronavirus – Kwesi Pratt tells government

Seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, wants the current administration to stop priding itself that it has been able to acquire 307 ambulances equipped with ventilators for the treatment of COVID-19 patients in severe conditions.

According to Mr. Pratt, the purpose of the mobile ventilators is to augment the work of the Ambulance Services in the country and not to be used as supplementary ventilators for COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

It could be recalled that Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Presidential Health Advisor in an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ somewhere in April, indicated that the entire nation has 100 ventilators but due to the timely intervention of President Nana Akufo-Addo, the over 300 ambulances all have ventilators which could be used to supplement those at the hospitals.

Addressing the issue on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 edition of the same programme (Kokrokoo), Kwesi Pratt, who is the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that arguments about the availability of mobile ventilators are baseless because ambulance ventilators cannot be comparable to having ventilators in hospitals.

“It is not for the management of COVID-19. The ventilators in the ambulance are for treating patients when they are being rushed to the health facility but it is impossible to put the patient on that kind of ventilator any longer once he or she is transferred to a hospital or health facility. So, stop making such statements. It is good to have over 300 ambulances with ventilators but it’s not the response to COVID-19,” he emphasized.

He therefore called on government to look at local production of ventilators to equip the various hospitals in the country, further stating that “100 ventilators even under normal circumstances for a population of 30 million are woefully inadequate”.

  • Coronavirus: Which sex position can create 1.8 metres space between partners? – Pratt quizzes

The coronavirus cannot be transmitted through sex, however, if an infected person sneezes or coughs, on the partner during sex, he or she can get infected.

This was explained by the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Aboagye during an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Tuesday.

He was reacting to reports that “constant or repeated acts of sex kills coronavirus”.

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper speaking to this on the same platform, sought to know how an infected person can contemplate having sex (missionary position) with his or her partner, especially when the World Health Organisation (WHO) and medical experts recommend the observation of social distance of about six feet (1.8m).

“Kwami, I read that it is advisable to maintain a 1.8metre distance in the wake of COVID-19 scourge. I hope I’m right….But the question I’m asking is which sex position or style can be possible when observing this 1.8metre guideline?” he asked amidst squeals of laughter from the host and other members of the panel.

  • Kwesi Pratt reveals the ‘witches’ causing road accidents in Ghana

The issue of road accidents has become a disturbing phenomenon in the country.

According to the Road Safety Commission, causes of the carnage on our roads are often speeding, drink-driving, poor driving skills, fatigue and many others.

Some religious fanatics think it is spiritual.

According to them, there are some ‘witches’ who seek blood and so cause such accidents.

However, Kwesi Pratt, the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper disagrees.

He says “the witches are the ones who are not making us have a comprehensive transport policy; they are the ones who have been elected and given the power to give us good roads and yet they are not doing so; they are the real witches.”

  • Coronavirus: Suspend official travels Kwasi Pratt tells government

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to Suspend Official travels over the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

Ghanaians are in a state of Panic as neighboring Country in the sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria, has recorded its first coronavirus case.

A statement signed by the Minister of Health in Nigeria, Dr Osagie Ehanire, explained that an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on February 25, 2020, was suspected to have contracted the disease.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, says some countries have suspended sporting activities and it would be proper for Ghana to suspend its official travels until further notice.

He noted that the covid-19 epidemic is spreading and it would be disastrous if it gets to Ghana.

“The virus has gotten to Europe, Asia, London etc and so it will be sensible to restrict official travels, what at all are we going to do in these areas. What is the point, let us suspend official travels; maybe initially for three months and then look at it when it subsides…It would be in our own interest to do that,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency in the Northern Region, Ras Mubarak called for President Akufo-Addo to be isolated and quarantined after his return from Norway.

He said this while speaking on the floor Parliament last Friday.

“…can my honorable friend confirmed whether upon the arrival of the President from his European tour he will be quarantined? Mr Speaker, I said so because of the………requires a 14 mandated period for quarantine, and the President has visited Norway which has recorded a case of Coronavirus…….it will be very important to know if the President will be quarantined when he is back from Norway,” he said.

  • ‘I can’t believe this is happening in Ghana’ – Kwesi Pratt on ‘rambo style’ Trade Fair demolition

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper is incensed over how properties were demolished by the Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited (GTFCL) over the weekend.

The company demolished properties of its tenants at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra on February 16, 2020, to pave way for the redevelopment of the site.

According to them, the tenants were duly notified.

Kwesi Pratt speaking to this issue expressed outrage at the fact that no apathy was shown in the demolition.

“What is this . . . What is the sense in this, I can’t believe this . . . and this is happening in Ghana and we can justify this,” outraged Kwesi Pratt said.

He bemoaned that even if the tenants ignored the notification, the properties could have been preserved.

    Background

The Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited (GTFC) took tenants and owners of factories situated at the Trade Fair by surprise when it illegally embarked on a demolition exercise backed by “orders from above” to destroy dozens of factories which are worth millions of dollars.

In the dead of the night last Sunday when the owners of these multi-purpose factories were probably sleeping, the authorities of Trade Fair decided to go all-out on a demolition spree.

The exercise which began around 10pm and ended after 12:00am on Monday saw two bulldozers and a team of armed police officers overseeing the destruction of structures and heavy industrial equipment.

  • I never knew Oppong Nkrumah, Amewu, others are NDC members – Kwesi Pratt to NPP

Kwesi Pratt has accused Oppong Nkrumah, Amewu and others of being members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stating that their move to welcome the PDS deal and engage shareholders, shows their inconsistency and incompetence as government appointees.

He said following the charade of suspending PDS and their hypocritical comments, one would not expect government to engage further with the deal.

“In fact, amazing things do happen in this country. If not for my good friend Kamal Deen, I wouldn’t have known Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, KT Hammond, Peter Amewu and Kennedy Agyapon were all NDC members.”

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says they have discovered a letter of a new deal between the government and a new company called Meridian Power Ventures Limited in Hong Kong.

Addressing the press on Thursday, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah popularly known as General Mosquito said: “since the negotiation for the turnover of the ECG assets and facilities, after the PDS consortium declared the preferred bidder in the ECG concession, there have been several issues that have arisen in connection with the management and governance of the ECG concession, as well as Board of PDS which unfortunately have not been fully addressed, including the prolonged suspension of the license of PDS and the ECG concession and the issues on the demand guarantee.”

According to him, “any further delay on this issue will be prejudicial to the best interest of all stakeholders, especially the electricity consumers of Ghana. We will like to give the assurance that we will act with dispatch to immediately resolve and address these issues in the Special Board Meeting that we called for which we trust will enable the immediate restring of the PDS board and management towards a more effective governance structure and management. We are calling on the government to come out because there are very serious constitutional issues that have been raised on this matter”.

The NPP in response has described the letter as fake.

Kamal Deen, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, speaking on Peace FM morning show Kokrokoo, said “the NDC of late has assumed some position of always trying to look bad” and added that the “authenticity of the letter sighted by the NDC is in question”.

“The position of the government is that PDS remains suspended” he further indicated.

However, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper speaking on the same platform, had a different view.

  • Sim card re-registration will be ‘fruitless’ and ‘useless’ – Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., says the upcoming sim card Re-registration exercise will be ‘fruitless’ and ‘useless’ unless the right measures are put in place.

Communication Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful at a press briefing Monday, said from January 2020, every Ghanaian would have to re-register their sim. This, according to her, is to clean the current registration system which has been characterised by fraud. The exercise is scheduled to end in June 2020.

CSE brouhaha: Kwesi Pratt cautions government officials

“It is quite clear that the current sim card registration regime is deficient and fraught with many challenges defeating the purpose of the sim registration,” she said.

If you may recall this is not the first time the country is embarking on such exercise after its commencement in 2010.

Double-Track system too expensive Kwesi Pratt

Speaking to this on Peace FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt said even though he has never been against the registration of sim cards, it will be useless if the country keeps spending the taxpayers’ money on the exercise only for it to be repeated.
