  • Accra High School receives 2400 tablets as part of govt’s One-Tablet-One Student initiative

Accra High School receives 2400 tablets as part of govt’s One-Tablet-One Student initiative

Accra High School has officially received over 2,400 tablets from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

This delivery is part of the government’s ‘One-Student-One-Tablet’ policy, aimed at providing digital learning tools to Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions nationwide.

During the 101st Founder’s Day celebration, Headmistress Madam Evelyn Nabia addressed rumors that the school had not received the tablets.

She confirmed that the devices are currently stored in the school’s warehouse and will be distributed to students starting next year.

The delay she stated, is due to the need for teacher training on the new learning modules before the tablets can be used in classrooms.

“Beginning next year, all students in Accra High School, are going to be studying with tablets. As we speak, they’re currently being stored in our warehouses. I state this emphatically because I’ve seen a news item being circulated, that says that Accra High has not received any tablet, and that is false.

“The reason why they haven’t been distributed is because, the learning modules that are on it have to be learnt by the teachers first, so that when we come to class, we can direct students on how to use them.”

The Founder’s Day event was attended by alumni, current students, and various educational stakeholders. Alumni, wearing the school’s black and white anniversary attire, joined in the festivities alongside other guests.

Guest Speaker Rt. Rev. Borlabi Bortey, Methodist Bishop of Accra Diocese, spoke on the theme “Restoring Discipline of AHISCO, the Role of Stakeholders.”

He emphasized the need for teachers to be exemplary in discipline and called on parents to support their children’s education by ensuring their punctuality and engagement.

“Teachers must always be an example to their students. A teacher who is always late or absent from class and doesn’t mark assignments can’t be an example to students. They need to be good role models as their mistakes can mar the lives of their students.

“Parents must be made to learn that they have a responsibility for their children. If we don’t get contributions from parents when it comes to discipline, then we have lost the game. They must ensure the punctuality of their wards at all times and also facilitate their learning at home,” he advised.

    Background:
Accra High School marked its centenary on August 17, 2023, with a Founder’s Day celebration, followed by a dinner party at Citi TV’s serene garden in Tesano on December 2, 2023.

The event brought together former students in a nostalgic reunion.

Founded by missionary Rev. J. T. Roberts, Accra High School has produced many prominent figures in various fields, including leaders in both Christian and Islamic communities.

The school’s legacy is sustained through the collaboration of its administration, board, alumni, parents, students, and the local community.

The school is divided into four houses: Glover-Addo (yellow), Roberts (blue), Nanka Bruce (green), and Buckman (red).

Akufo-Addo’s ‘One Student, One Laptop’ for SHSs to be launched on March 25

On Monday, March 25, 2024, President Akufo-Addo is set to inaugurate the highly anticipated One Student, One Laptop initiative, designed specifically for Senior High School students.

This initiative aims to promote computer literacy and technological proficiency among young Ghanaian students.

The government will provide pre-loaded laptops to each SHS student nationwide.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, this initiative is in line with the government’s broader objectives of enhancing e-learning and digitalization.

It also aligns with the goal of leveraging technological advancements to prepare Ghanaian students for the digital age, often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The One Student, One Laptop initiative seeks to enhance Senior High School Education by offering Teaching and Learning Management Systems, Digital Learning Content, and educational devices to all Senior High and TVET Schools across the country.

This initiative was first announced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last year, underscoring the government’s commitment to secondary education.

This commitment has been evident since 2017, with the government’s policy of providing free education at the secondary level.

The laptops provided will come preloaded with educational programs, including textbooks, enabling students to access learning materials offline from anywhere in the country, even without internet connectivity.

With the introduction of these laptops, students will no longer need to carry heavy textbooks, marking a significant shift in educational practices.

Distribution of the laptops to SHS students will begin immediately after the President’s launch on Monday, March 25.

  • Rail minister’s laptop ‘stolen from under his seat in a London bar

Rail minister’s laptop ‘stolen from under his seat in a London bar

It has been reported that a minister’s laptop, which contained very sensitive information, was stolen when he was sitting at a pub in London.

Only days before the largest day of strikes in the UK’s history, which involved thousands of workers, it was stolen from Rail Minister Huw Merriman.

Just last month Metro.co.uk exclusively revealed that a laptop containing ‘sensitive’ data was stolen from an MP’s office on the parliamentary estate.

The Evening Standard reports that Huw Merriman’s work computer was taken from under his seat at a bar in London’s Covent Garden on February 2.

It was the same week that train drivers launched their last round of mass walkouts, causing huge disruption in London and across the UK.

Sensitive information relating to negotiations over the then-recent strikes was contained on it at the time, but was wiped remotely once the theft was raised with police, sources said.

The reported theft from the pub on James Street came just a day after the biggest rail walkouts for more than a decade.

RMT and Aslef workers at 14 train companies took industrial action on February 1 and 3 in a dispute over pay and conditions, which continues.

It isn’t the first time a laptop belonging to a minister has been stolen from a pub.

Minister Stuart Andrew’s laptop was taken as he enjoyed a drink in a pub close to Downing Street in February last year.

Mr Andrew had his work computer, personal device and house keys stolen from the Red Lion in Whitehall.

The pub is a regular haunt for MPs, government aides and journalists and is just a few hundred meters from the Houses of Parliament.

The Conservative MP for Pudsey was a housing minister in Boris Johnson’s government at the time of the theft, and now holds jobs in the Department of Culture and the Department for Business and Trade.

His computer, which had been at his feet when taken, was also accessed and wiped remotely after he reported it missing, it was reported.

Sources said that Mr Merriman, the Conservative MP for Bexhill and Battle, told the police about his stolen laptop at around 7.30pm, with the Metropolitan Police confirming the theft was reported to them.

However, they said no arrests had yet been made.

A government spokesman said: ‘We take the security of government devices extremely seriously, which is why devices, such as laptops and mobile phones, are always encrypted so any loss does not compromise security.’

  • Meet the 26-year-old man building electric bikes from dead laptop batteries

He makes one point abundantly clear before he speaks about his innovation.

He is not professionally trained to build bikes as he has done but being a professional cyclist, and having the need to move from one place to another really quick, it was just right to custom-build something for himself.

That is the story of Lawrence Adjei, a 26-year-old who has found an innovative way of turning dead laptop batteries into electric bikes.

“I do custom-build electric bikes from scratch. I am not a welder but I just do everything myself from scratch; you can see the machines here,” he said, pointing to one of the machines in the little garage that helps him get his innovations completed.

Sharing his story with Nana Tea Was Here Some on YouTube, he explained that he just found a great way of recycling dead laptop batteries, transforming them into powered bikes.

“With the batteries, I use dead laptop batteries. I crack them open and then I test them with a machine,” he explained.

With a custom-built external battery that helps to charge the bike, he said at full charge the machine can go as for as a 120km range.

“This battery here is 77volt battery with 37 amps an hour, which is around 2.7, 2.8 watts and a full charge will take around 3 hours and that can take you to up 120 km range.

“I have a custom-built charger that you plug into the mains to charge the bike,” he said.

Another unique feature of his bike is that it has ports to allow for mobile phones to be charged.

While he is yet to fully get his bikes on the road, as well as get them commercialized, Lawrence Adjei said that the bikes can still be used.
