Rapper Lil Durk faces arrest in connection with murder-for-hire allegations

Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk has been detained on a murder-for-hire charge, according to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner.

Police documents reviewed by US media indicate that the artist, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, was arrested Thursday night in Broward County, Florida, and is currently held without bail.

The arrest follows the recent charging of five individuals connected to Banks’ hip-hop collective, Only The Family (OTF), in Chicago over a 2022 shooting that resulted in the death of the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

Lil Durk has achieved six top-five albums on the US Billboard charts since 2019 and has collaborated on hit singles with major artists like Drake and J Cole.

The 33-year-old Chicago native has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and won Best Melodic Rap Performance in February for his track “All My Life” featuring J Cole.

Lil Durk launched Only The Family (OTF) in 2010, a collective deeply involved in Chicago’s drill rap movement.

According to US media, authorities allege that the five men charged on Wednesday coordinated the 2022 Los Angeles shooting as revenge for the 2020 killing of rising rapper King Von, an OTF signee.

A friend of Quando Rondo was initially charged with King Von’s death, though those charges were later dismissed, and Quando Rondo himself faced no arrest or charges.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the new indictment against the five men alleges that an unnamed co-conspirator offered “money and lucrative music opportunities with OTF” to anyone who took part in killing Quando Rondo.

In 2022, several of the suspects allegedly opened fire on a car carrying Quando Rondo, his sister, and his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson.

Although Quando Rondo and his sister emerged unscathed, Robinson sadly lost her life in the incident.

This month, FBG Duck’s mother allegedly filed a lawsuit implicating Lil Durk, OTF, and King Von in her son’s 2020 shooting death.

In addition, charges against Lil Durk, including attempted murder, were dropped two years ago after a non-fatal shooting in Atlanta in 2019.

The BBC has contacted Lil Durk’s representatives for a response.

Grammy-nominated rapper Lil Durk praises the Asakaa Boys’ Ghanaian drill

The Asakaa Boys, trailblazers of the Ghanaian drill scene, are riding high on a wave of excitement following the acknowledgment of their music by Grammy-nominated American rapper Lil Durk.

Lil Durk took to Instagram to share a snippet of the track “Lonely On The Road” from O’Kenneth and Xlimkid’s EP “Pain in Glory.”

The rapper, recently nominated for the 66th Grammy Awards, dedicated the post to thanksgiving day, paying tribute to his late brother who passed away in 2021.

Notably, this marks the second time Lil Durk has vibed to the Asakaa Boys’ song, fueling the enthusiasm of both the group and their fanbase.

The recognition from such a prominent figure in the global music scene is a significant milestone for the Ghanaian drill genre, which has been gaining international attention.

The genre’s rise to prominence began with the endorsement from the late Virgil Abloh, and Lil Durk’s appreciation serves as another powerful endorsement, solidifying the genre’s journey toward widespread international recognition.

  • Roddy Ricch shares “Twin” f/ Lil Durk, reveals ‘Feed tha Streets 3’ tracklist

Ahead of the arrival of his new Feed tha Streets 3 project on Friday, Roddy Ricch has shared “Twin” featuring Lil Durk/.

The booming song sees the two make for a compelling duo, wasting no time as Roddy references everything from his travels to Kim Kardashian’s divorce from Ye. On Durk’s verse, meanwhile, he comes in aggressively and calls for the freedom of incarcerated rapper Pooh Shiesty.

To coincide with the release of “Twin,” Roddy has offered up a look at the tracklist for Feed tha Streets 3. Alongside Lil Durk, the release features an appearance from Ty Dolla Sign and production from Mustard, Cubeatz, and Turbo among others. His last record, Live Life Fast, released in December 2021.

Earlier this month, Roddy revealed that he was “harassed” at the border as he made his way to a show in Canada.

“The Federal Border Patrol did not allow me into Vancouver, BC,” Roddy said. “I apologize to my fans. I don’t believe I’ll be revisiting Canada anytime soon because they’ve harassed me every time I’ve come and Imma be completely honest, I’m tired of the harassment.”

  • Meek Mill responds to Lil Baby saying he was one of the first big rappers to co-sign him

Lil Baby says Meek Mill was the first big artist to show him support, which was apparently news to the Philly-born rapper.

The Quality Control artist made the claim during a recent interview with Complex’s Speedy Morman, when he was asked to recall his first major co-sign.

“Meek Mill, he was the first person to post my mixtape, like the first rapper,” Baby said, seemingly referring to 2017’s Perfect Timing. “And I was already a super fan of Meek. Somebody told me, ‘You see Meek post your mixtape?’ And he was following me [on social media]…he was the first rapper ever, besides Thug and all them.”

Lil Baby said he and a girl were hanging out on a couch when he learned about the shoutout from Meek. He told Morman he was “kind of excited,” and he even called up one of his friends to share the big news.

Though it was an unforgettable moment for Baby, Meek admitted he didn’t remember giving the co-sign.

“I didn’t know this,” Meek wrote on Instagram, alongside an interview clip. “But Ima always support the trill when I hear it. @lilbaby keep snapping.”

Lil Baby and Meek have collaborated on a number of records over the years, including 2018’s “Time,” 2019’s “On the Road” with Post Malone, as well as 2021’s “Sharing Locations” and “Still Runnin” with Lil Durk.

Elsewhere in the interview, Baby was asked if he’s gotten involved with some of Drakes’s recent high-stakes gambling. He recalled the time he lost six figures while hanging out with Drizzy, Meek, James Harden, and Michael Rubin in the Bahamas.

“Shit, I lost about $600,000,” he said. Speedy replied, “Sorry to hear that.”

Thankfully he was able to laugh off the incident, and considering his continued success, it’s clear he’s not exactly strapped for cash. Check out the full 360 with Speedy Morman interview below; the Meek comments start at the 12:30 mark:

Meek has been notably vocal on Instagram as of late, recently offering up some criticism for the artist formerly known as Kanye West after he sported a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt alongside Candace Owens.

“What you be doing for fame driving you crazy…look how hard you came at me n***as know I’m vocal it’s like you hate your own people,” he said.

“You ain’t even post @vory album after all that work he did for you and he look up to you…you made sure you said Jack Harlow was the hottest in Kentucky overlooked [EST Gee] and vory.”

  • Charges against Lil Durk dropped in Atlanta shooting case

Charges against Lil Durk in connection with a 2019 shooting incident have been dropped.

Per a recent report from regional outlet WSB-TV, Durk is no longer facing charges in connection with the non-fatal shooting, which was alleged to have taken place outside a Varsity restaurant location in the Atlanta area in February of 2019. As previously reported, Durk had been facing multiple charges, including criminal intent to commit murder. The late King Von was also initially charged in connection with the shooting.

When reached for comment by Complex on Monday, Durk’s attorney Manny Arora said he was “glad” to see the charges against his client dropped so that “all involved” could move forward.

“I am glad that the charges from three plus years ago have been dismissed,” Arora told Complex in an email. “While it is unfortunate that it took so long to reach the conclusion that we had argued from day one, I’m glad that all involved can now move on.”

Per a separate Pitchfork report, the reason provided by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in court documents on the dismissed charges was “prosecutorial discretion.” Complex has also reached out to the Fulton County D.A.’s office for additional comment. This story may be updated.

In August, Durk and Lil Baby were met with a fleet of new RIAA certifications, including a platinum distinction for their 2021 collab project The Voice of the Heroes. Durk’s most recent solo album, 7220, debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart upon its release this March.
