Bawumia will take Ghana to the promise land – Yendi MP

The Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu-Mahama, has said that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia should be the flagbearer of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Being a presidential or parliamentary candidate of a party, he believes, should not be based on the number of years one has been a member of the party.

He said that people saying it is the turn of Alan Kyerematen to be the flagbearer of the NPP are wrong because there were people on the scene before him, including Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, who contested with ex-President John Agyekum Kufour.

Aliu-Mahama, who made these remarks in a JoyNews interview monitored by GhanaWeb on Sunday, added that the vice president over the past few years has proven that he has the capacity and the competence to transform Ghana.

“My support for Dr. Bawumia is not because my late father wanted to see him at some point. I have seen the vice president, within the shortest possible time, become a force to reckon with in this country.

“He has moved the country as a vice president; he has done a lot. He has the vision to do more with the support of the president and has carried himself to the admiration of everybody; he is very competent.

“The vice president at least can lead Ghana to the promise land… Dr. Bawumia is somebody who stands tall, in the last 16 years, everything is about Bawumia. Even those who don’t like Bawumia are speaking about him,” he said.

He warned the party to be careful with how it handles the upcoming presidential primaries to ensure that it does not divide the party as it did in 2008, which led to the party losing the election.

He added that even though all the persons who have expressed interest in contesting in the party’s flagbearership race are competent, only one person can emerge as the winner.

Meanwhile, the vice president has been projected to be the flagbearer of the NPP in a recent study co-conducted by Outcomes International Ghana and the Centre for Sustainable African Development Initiatives (C-SADI) UK.

According to the survey, the most popular candidate for the New Patriotic Party flagbearer position in all 16 regions of Ghana is the vice president.

In all, the survey got responses from around 197,000 NPP polling station executives (PSEs) in all the regions.

“Data was obtained mainly through computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) technology between 15th November 2022 and 15th December 2022. Based on 95% confidence level and 2% margin of error a sample size of 6000 PSEs was used. However, 5641 PSEs were successfully interviewed (response rate of 94%) from all 96 constituencies.

“Greater Accra region had the highest number of PSEs interviewed with 1142 PSEs followed by the Ashanti region with 869 PSEs corresponding to 20.2% and 15.4% respectively. More than half of PSE’s who participated in the survey were Akan (54% [n=3056 PSEs]), and 46% (n=2585 PSEs) were non-Akan. In terms of religious distribution, 78% of the PSEs were Christian whilst 20.6% were Muslim,” the report stated.

  • Since 1957, we have created more jobs than any other administration – Dr. Bawumia

The government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has an unrivaled track record in terms of public infrastructure in Ghana’s history, according to vice president Mahamudu Bawumia.

He claims that the administration in which he served as vice president over the past six years had built more highways, airports, and interchanges than earlier administrations.

On December 29, 2022, the Second Gentleman was giving a speech during a ceremony of thanksgiving that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) had arranged in Accra.

“We have built more roads…, there is no government that has built more roads than the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“We have built more factories than any other government since independence. We have built more airports than any other government,” he told teeming supporters clad in white and the party’s colours.

In the case of interchanges, he ranked the NPP the most prolific in terms of the Fourth Republic: “We have built more interchanges than any other government in the 4th Republic.”

Bawumia was accompanied by his wife Samira to the service that took place at the party headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra. It was organised by the National Executive Committee.

Special prayers were said for the party’s upcoming activities especially as relates to election of a presidential candidate for the 2024 polls and parliamentary candidates across the 275 constituencies.

On his part, General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong assured that the NPP will succeed in its planned activities and sought the face of God in their programmes for 2023.

“No harm will befall us [NPP] in the coming year [2023], as we prepare to elect our presidential candidate as well as parliamentary candidates.

“We pray to God to see us through the incoming primaries. God is our only hope, we pray to him to protect us and make our primaries a successful one devoid of any untoward issues. We are praying and pleading to God to shower his blessings on NPP,” he prayed.

  • We have constructed more roads, factories, airports than any government since 1957 – Bawumia

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has an unmatched record in terms of public infrastructure in the history of Ghana.

According to him, in the last six years, the government he has served as Vice President in has undertaken among others, more roads, airports and interchanges than previous governments.

The Second Gentleman was speaking at a thanksgiving service organised by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra on Thursday, December 29, 2022.

“We have built more roads…, there is no government that has built more roads than the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

  • Gold for oil: This policy will help us a lot – Kwesi Pratt applauds government

Kwesi Pratt Jr., a seasoned journalist, has applauded the government’s decision to use the nation’s gold stockpiles to pay for oil.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia launched the initiative on Thursday. The government is developing a new regulation to allow the purchase of oil goods using gold.

This policy is intended to address the declining foreign exchange reserves and the demand for dollars from oil importers, both of which are weakening the cedi and driving up living expenses.

When implemented as planned for the first quarter of 2023, the new policy “will fundamentally change our balance of payments and significantly reduce the persistent depreciation of our currency”, Bawumia said.

“The barter of gold for oil represents a major structural change,” he added.

The government estimates to reap revenues to the sum of $3 billion from this trade.

Dr. Bawumia also dispelled rumours that this move is against the use of the US dollar in international transactions.

“Unfortunately some people have misinterpreted this as Ghana being against the use of the US dollar in international transactions. Far from it. We want to accumulate more US dollar reserves in the future”, he noted while speaking at the 2022 AGI Awards in Accra.

He further said; ”If we implement the gold for oil policy as it as envisioned, it will fundamentally change our balance of payments and significantly reduce the persistent depreciation of our currency with its associated increases in fuel, electricity, water, transport and food prices.”

Kwesi Pratt Jnr applauded the government’s efforts to strengthen the local currency and improve lives through the use of the country’s gold to purchase oil which will give the nation 3 billion dollars worth of profits.

“For me, this policy will help us a lot because, according to the Vice President, when we use the gold to buy oil, we will get at least 3 billion. This is even more than the money we are seeking from IMF,” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”.

He, however, disagreed with the Vice President on his clarification that this policy is intended against the dollar.

Mr. Pratt asked “why should we apologize for doing the right thing?” as, to him, the government owes no one an apology if it is adopting a policy that will give the cedi strength over the foreign currencies.

  • Bawumia isn’t like that – Adu-Boahen confesses to veep’s incorruptibility in Anas exposé

Dr. Gideon Boako, an aide to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, has contradicted claims by the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, that the Vice President will need US$200,000 as an appearance fee from any investor.

According to him, the Vice President is smart and discreet whenever he is dealing with individuals seeking to invest in the economy.

Charles Adu Boahen had allegedly told investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, in an undercover recording that Bawumia required about USD200,000 as an appearance fee from an investor to get his backing and influence in establishing a business in Ghana.

The celebrated investigative journalist in a November 14, 2022 post on his Facebook timeline stated that when his Tiger Eye PI team met with the Minister of State in charge of Finance in UAE, he spoke about Bawumia’s financial demands before agreeing to assist any investor.

“You mean, like appearance fees and stuff? I mean he, himself (the Vice President), if you give him some (USD) 200,000 or something as a token, as thank you, appreciation, that’s fine. He’s not really, he’s not really (like) that. All he needs is to worry about his campaign money in 2020,” Charles Adu Boahen is quoted to have said

But when the Tiger Eye team got in touch with Dr Gideon Boako, the Economic Advisor and Spokesperson at the Office of the Vice President, he denied that the Vice President has authorized or discussed with anybody to solicit funds for his political ambitions or to accept an appearance fee/token for an investor to meet with him.

“So, on top of my head and having been with him closely, I will say no. I know how discreet he, the Vice President, is and he is smart and he wouldn’t even dare do such a thing,” Dr Boako remarked.

  • Ghana tops in access to financial inclusion in Africa

Ghana has been recognised as the only country in Africa to achieve 100% access to financial inclusion on the continent.

The honour was contained in this year’s State of Inclusive Instant Payment in Africa Report put together by AfricaNenda and launched at the ongoing Mobile World Congress Africa 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.

This feat was achieved through the successful implementation of the Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) system, which integrates all payments platforms across banks, fintechs and telcos, allowing every Ghanaian to make and receive instant payments.

Commenting on the monumental achievement at the ongoing Standard Chartered Bank Digital Banking, Innovation and Fintech Festival in Accra on Wednesday (26 October 2022), Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia expressed delight that the government’s digitisation agenda, began in 2017 and touching almost every aspect of national life, is beginning to yield the desired results.

“In fact, because of mobile money interoperability, where fintechs, banks and telcos have essentially payment platforms that enable every Ghanaian to access and receive payments, Ghana was the only country to score 100% on financial inclusion in Africa at the ongoing Mobile World Congress Africa 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda. And it just makes you proud in this context that yes, we are doing what is actually quite right.

“You’ve seen mobile money interoperability; you’ve seen the national ID card; you’ve seen digital addresses, you’ve seen the paperless ports, universal QR code, Ghana pay, and so on. All of this is laying a particular foundation in this country that will allow us to fully participate in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“It is also comforting to note that even the credit reference agencies are leveraging on these infrastructure, the digital infrastructure that we have put in place, digital addresses, national ID and so on. We are expecting that individual credit scoring by the credit reference agencies will start taking place by the first quarter of next year, which will allow and underpin the development of a real credit system in Ghana which is very, very critical in terms of the development of this country,” Bawumia said.

Digital technology has changed the way Africa’s financial service industry offers products and services to consumers, Dr Bawumia pointed out, noting that new financial service business models based on digital technologies are enabling inclusive access to financial services across diverse product types for consumers.

“As a government, we realized it was imperative to adopt digital innovation to transform the economy. It is not a venture without opposition, and there are huge costs associated to get to our destination. However we are unwavering as we are convinced the benefits will outweigh the costs, and these benefits are already beginning to show.

“Thus far, we have introduced some interventions such as mobile money interoperability, digital renewal of National Health Insurance, implementation of the digital address system, the national ID card, paperless port system, QR-Code, among others.

“We are already seeing the impact of these digitisation initiatives including efficient public service delivery by all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies on the Ghana.gov portal, combating corruption by removing the middle man, and also ghost names in many transactions, bringing more Ghanaians into the formal sector and driving domestic revenue mobilization, amongst others.”

To achieve greater success and faster growth, Bawumia called for more collaboration between all players in the fintech ecosystem – banks, fintechs, telecom companies, governments, regulators and consumers – in order to position Africa as a fintech innovation hub.

“A strong regulatory framework is also necessary across the sub region to drive innovation. Central banks need to be ahead of the market and put in place regulations that are innovation friendly bearing in mind all associated risks.”

    Award

The State of Inclusive Instant Payment in Africa Report examines all instant pay rollouts across the continent to identify the areas of commonality with the view to driving adoption to boost financial inclusion on the continent.

This year, the report focused on inclusive instant payment systems in 12 African countries and Ghana was the only country that scored 100% on access to financial inclusion.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Interbank Payments and Settlements Systems (GhIPSS), Archie Hesse, who was present at the launch of the report in Kigali, said from a humble beginning of integrating three instant payment platforms into what he called the ‘financial inclusion triangle’, GhIPSS has since improved the services by adding other services like Proxy Pay, Internet Gateway Payment, Request to Pay and the Universal QR Code dubbed GHQR, which can be linked to both bank accounts and digital wallets, with affordability as the key driving force.

GhIPSS, in collaboration with the banks, have also come up with a bank-wide wallet called GhanaPay to ensure that the banks also play a role in the mobile money space with the view to bridging the financial inclusion gap, he added.

  • Cedi’s woes: ‘Absent’ Ammisah-Arthur is more useful than Bawumia – Captain Smart

Captain Smart, host of the morning show on Onua FM/TV, has commented on the devaluation of the cedi and demanded information regarding Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president.

The journalist, who takes pride in belonging to the ruling New Patriotic Party, stated that although Bawumia’s silence was concerning, so was the rate at which the cedi was losing value.

In an interview that was metaphorically shared on Onua TV’s social media accounts, he claimed that the Vice President was less significant than Bawumia’s predecessor despite being late.

“The dollar is almost hitting 14 cedis, where is our Bawumia? I am an NPP person and I won’t stop saying it. Where is our Bawumia?

“Very respectfully, even Amissah-Arthur who is dead is of more importance than him. What is his real importance to the extent that the dollar has hit 14 cedis?” he quizzed.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has assured that there is no need to panic over the depreciation of the cedi and that the issue will soon be taken care of.

The Cedi has recently been classified by Bloomberg as the worst-performing currency against the US Dollar.

Currently, the Cedi is trading at around GH₵13 – 14 cedis to a dollar at some forex bureaus. The depreciation rate is a contributory factor for the ongoing shop closures ordered by the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

According to the group, the fast depreciation of the Cedi is eroding their profits and also increasing the cost of doing business.

  • Boys Brigade Ghana Honour Vice President Bawumia

The Boys Brigade Ghana has conferred an honorary award on the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his service in leadership.

At its 70th Anniversary celebration in Accra on Saturday October 15, 2022 the Boys Brigade lauded Dr. Bawumia for his “leadership, commitment and dedicated service, which has earned you this most esteemed office in Ghana.”

The Vice President was a member of the Boys Brigade during his formative years at Sakasaka Primary School, Tamale, and the Brigade, which is a platform for grooming boys to uphold good behaviour, expressed pride in the Vice President for reflecting their credo all of these years.

Delivering his keynote address, Dr. Bawumia, who expressed gratitude for the honour, recalled with fondness, his membership of the Boys Brigade in primary school.

He commended the Boys Brigade Ghana, especially its founders, for the positive impact the group continues to make.

“I have been informed that, currently, the Boys’ Brigade has over 700 Companies and over 38,000 Boys. Together with the Girls’ Brigade, you are over 100,000 in seven Christian denominations of the Country, namely: the Methodist Church, Ghana, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Anglican Church of Ghana, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Ghana, Evangelical Presby Church, Jesus Generation Ministries and the Perez International Church with plans of getting to the other Christian groups and schools,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

“At this point I will like to pay glowing tribute to the officers and boys of the 1st Accra Company for their efforts at grooming boys to become Christian men for Church and Society. I am reliably informed that, a number of persons have passed through the Company to be notable men of church and Society.”

The Vice President also urged the Boys Brigade to continue to uphold its principles in order to continue the nurturing of many future leaders.

“The principle of nurturing and equipping are very fundamental to the survival of every household, group, organisation and nation at large,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“It is our collective responsibility to nurture and train the next generation to be in a position to inherit the things we will leave behind since they are heirs to these things.”

The first Company of the Boys Brigade Ghana was formed 70 years ago in August 1952.

  • Tumu astroturf pitch: Project cost is GH¢2 million – Contractor clarifies

The project’s contractor, Sinkare, has stated that at least GH2 million will be invested in the construction of the contentious artificial turf at Tumu, in the Upper West region.

The 100 by 120 foot pitch alone will cost 1.1 million cedis, he informed Francis Abban, host of Morning Starr on Starr 103.5 FM.

According to Mr. Sinkare, the remaining funds would be used for ancillary work and floodlights.

After Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, cut the sod on October 11, 2022, there has been a fuss made about the project’s expense.

The average cost of astroturfs has been between 300,000 and 600,000 Ghana cedis, according to the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC).

Some Ghanaians on social media reacted to the cost of the Tumu astroturf project questioning why government will splurge GH¢2 million to construct an artificial pitch.

In July 2022, government revealed that it constructed 30 astroturfs at a total cost of GH¢40,779,395.79.

However, a report by PIAC also quoted that the cost of the astroturfs amounted to GH¢8,188,000 million, a massive variance of GHS32,591,395.44.

  • FLASHBACK: SIM card re-registration: Minority demands inclusion of other IDs

The minority party in parliament urged the government to register SIMs with other National Identification Cards.

After the government chose to solely use the Ghana Card for the procedure, this happened.

They contend that section (1) of Legislative Instrument (211) does not restrict such activities to the Ghana Card alone.

The Minority in Parliament is demanding the inclusion of other national ID cards as a pre-requisite in the ongoing SIM card re-registration exercise.

It would be recalled that the government has ordered a re-registration of all sim cards as part of moves to deal with digital fraud.

As a requirement, one is demanded to present a Ghana card as a pre-requisite for registration.

But at a press conference, the minority caucus on the Communication Committee kicked against the move to limit the registration to only the Ghana card.

The deputy minority spokesperson on the committee, Sam Nartey George, argued that the Legislative Instrument (211) clause (1) does not limit such exercises only to the Ghana card.

They describe the move to disconnect all persons who fail to register their sim cards by March next year, with the Ghana card as an affront to the rights of the citizen, he added.

The Minority proposed four-point steps to making the process a robust one including the withdrawal of the threat to disconnect all sim cards that fail to register by next year and scrapping of the physical visit to offices of the National Identification Authority (NIA )office for registration purposes.

The re-registration of mobile SIM cards started on 1st October 2021.

The exercise, which will last for six months, will end on 31st March 2022.

Any SIM which is not registered at the end of this exercise will be blocked, the Ministry of Communications and Digitization has disclosed.

In a bid to rid the country’s cyberspace of fraud, and monitor and track down persons who use their phones for criminal activities, the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced that plans were underway to organize a sim re-registration exercise.

Addressing the 5th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra, the Vice President noted that any individual who fails to take part in the exercise risks losing his or her SIM card.

“We all have to do that otherwise we’ll lose that SIM card. That will really give us a real identity for all MoMo transactions. For example, it takes away fraud that is taking place like SIM box and through MoMo”, he added.

  • Agenda 111 closing up 60-year health access gap – Bawumia

The decision to undertake arguably the largest investment in the country’s health care system, Agenda 111, arose from the government’s determination to close the gaping lack of access to healthcare facilities, especially in remote areas of the country, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has explained.

Inspecting the progress of work in one of the dozens of new hospitals under construction across the country at Bunkprugu in the North East Region on Tuesday, 4th October 2022, Dr Bawumia said this was the first time a concerted effort has been made to ensure that every Ghanaian, irrespective of where they live, has access to a quality health facility within a relatively short distance.

“The Agenda 111 Project is to bridge a 60-year gap in access to health facilities across the country. 90 districts in our country do not have District Hospitals. Six Regions do not have Regional Hospitals. Large parts of our country do not have access to Specialist hospital facilities and services. This is despite over 60 years of being Independent.

“So the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took the bold decision to build these hospitals and meet the health care needs of the people of Ghana, to ensure that every District has a hospital and every Region has a Regional Hospital. This will greatly increase access to health care, prevent avoidable, preventable deaths and reduce the suffering of our people,” he added.

The Agenda 111 project involves the construction and/or upgrading of 101 district hospitals, the construction of six regional hospitals in the newly created regions, two specialised hospitals in the middle and northern belts, as well as a regional hospital in the Western Region and renovation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

Officials of the Ministry of Health say the Project, when completed, will significantly deepen the delivery of quality healthcare at the district level and boost access to healthcare services for all citizens towards ensuring the attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Three.

The Vice President had earlier inspected ongoing works at Savelugu and Yendi, both in the Northern Region, as part of the first leg of his working visit to the five northern regions of Ghana. He was accompanied by Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare, Presidential Adviser on Health, Hon Ambrose Dery, Minister for the Interior, and other government officials.

  • Pressure mounts on Alan Kyerematen to resign as Trades Minister

New Patriotic Party (NPP) polling station executives are mounting pressure on Alan Kyerematen to resign as Trade and Industry Minister to enable him to focus on his presidential ambition, Hopeson Adorye has said.

The former NPP parliamentary candidate for Kpone Katamanso in an interview with Okay FM on October 3 extolled the qualities of Alan Kyerematen.

He stated that Alan Kyerematen has in the course of his lifetime distinguished himself and has patiently waited for his turn to be the flagbearer of the elephant party.

He indicated that the Trades Minister remains the only candidate amongst the lot whose names have popped up in the flagbearership race to retain the party in power in 2024.

Adorye stated that Alan Kyerematen’s appeal to electorates cuts across the political divide as well as persons belonging to the middle class.

“We are bringing him that is why we say ‘eduruwoso’. The question we must ask is which candidate won’t take us into opposition. All the aspirants are okay but which of them won’t take us to the opposition? It is only one person who will retain us in power.

“He is someone who appeals to the middle class, children, party members and is able to sway opposition members to vote for NPP. He is in the person of Alan Cash. Apart from him, no one else. Nobody can find fault with him because he is a man who has distinguished himself. Alan has comported himself when it comes to adhering to NPP’s ban on a campaign,” he said.

On the occasion of the Trades Minister’s birthday yesterday, Adorye said party members throng the minister’s office to celebrate with him while also urging him to resign from his role in government.

He expressed confidence that NPP delegates will vote massively for him in the race in which he is expected to come up against some other heavyweights in the party.

“On his birthday today [October 3, 2022], party delegates are in his office to prevail on him to leave his appointment in government and come and lead the party. The Bible says they that wait shall renew their strength. If you look at the way Alan has waited, even when in 2006 he attempted to contest he was prevailed upon to allow J. A Kufuor and others to lead.

“He waited patiently and prepared himself until now. God will make a way for him by Grace. If you have an objective, God will deliver on it for you if you are focused on it. With Christ in the boat, we will sail through. By 2024, about 140,000 out of 200,000 delegates to elect flagbearer will vote for Alan Kyerematen to win 2024 elections,” Adorye stated.

Further commenting on election 2024, the staunch supporter of Alan Kyerematen said that the opposition NDC have no choice but to bring former President John Dramani Mahama.

In a contest between the two candidates of the leading political parties, the former NPP parliamentary candidate said Alan Kyerematen will deliver a resounding victory for the governing party by obtaining 54% of the votes cast.

“It is the polling station officers who are bringing Alan as flagbearer. They are always asking him when he is stepping down from his role as minister. The people on the ground are mounting pressure for him to step down. NDC’s candidate is automatically John Mahama. John Mahama facing Alan…you will see NPP garnering 54% of votes cast. I’m sure on that,” a confident Adorye submitted.

    Background

The New Patriotic Party, is bent on breaking the eight-year rotational power cycle between itself and the opposition party NDC.

Ahead of that, it is billed to elect a flagbearer next year. Some of the names which have popped up besides Alan Kyerematen include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, and Former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong amongst others.

Political analysts however predict that the contest is going to be a two-horse race between Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

  • Dr. Bawumia defends free SHS policy, saying “so far, so good”

The Free Senior High School (FSHS) program will be steadfastly pursued by the administration, according to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, in order to advance and catch up with other developed economies.

Despite requests for a reassessment of its most important educational policy, this continues. He stated that this will be accomplished despite the nation’s ongoing economic difficulties.

The FSHS policy has benefited roughly 1.6 million students since it was first implemented.

The approach has, however, come under more public scrutiny recently as a result of allegations of food shortages and a decline in the standard of instruction.

This notwithstanding, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia speaking at the centenary launch of Accra High School said, the policy is the catalyst required to accelerate the agenda of industrial revolution.

“Government is undaunted, and will continue to work hard to fulfill this promise to the people of Ghana. We cannot really afford to disappoint the youth and the future leaders of our country. So far, so good ” Dr. Bawumia said.

He also used the platform to rally the general population to support government to sustain the delivery of the policy even in the face of the current economic challenges.

Dr. Bawumia also took time to tout some projects and policies that the administration has successfully carried out and the ones that are yet to be rolled out to make life better for the Ghanaian people.

Accra High School was founded by the late Rev. James Thomas Roberts on 17 August 1923. The School will therefore turn 100 years next year.

  • We have been bold in the face of corruption Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said that as far as the fight against corruption in the country is concerned, the Akufo-Addo-led government has demonstrated an uncommon boldness in the face of it.

According to the vice president, the ruling NPP government has shown more commitment to fighting corruption in public spaces than the erstwhile NDC government led by John Dramani Mahama ever did.

Dr. Bawumia said he can “confidently state that this government is the first in years to demonstrate an uncommon boldness and commitment to fighting corruption.”

While attempting to give reasons for his claim Dr. Bawumia said the NPP government in its first years has strengthened legal frameworks to fight corruption.

Citing the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor amongst other Dr. Bawumia said “Why do I say so? Over the last four years, we have strengthened the regulatory and legal framework to fight corruption, by implementing several digitisation initiatives as well as passing into law, several pieces of anti-corruption related legislation including the Witness Protection Act of 2018, the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act of 2018, and the Right to Information Act of 2019, to unearth public sector corruption.”

The vice president was speaking at a forum Thursday, November 26, 2020.

He also argued that the Akufo-Addo-led government has demonstrated leadership in the fight against corruption by adopting technology in the operations of some institutions to reduce the risk of corruption.

  • Akufo-Addo has used four years to build what NDC destroyed in 8 years Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that Ghana has over the past four years witnessed dramatic development following the prudent policies introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration.

He pointed out that the economy has picked up from the destruction it suffered under the Mahama administration.

He said during a presentation on Thursday, November 26 that “what the NDC destroyed in 8 years Nana Akufo-Addo has corrected in four years and even added more”.

To that end, he said while delivering the address that Ghanaians should vote for the current president in the December 7 elections.

“I am here to paint to you a broad picture of what we have done over the last four years and how each of them connects to a central theme. Everything we have successfully done over the last four years has been designed to make an impact on real people, on the lives and livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians from all walks of life.

“Our stewardship over the last four years would mean nothing if we have not impacted on the lives and livelihoods of the broad mass of Ghanaians.

“As we review how far we have come and the progress we have made with the mandate you gave His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP government over the last years, I am confident that you will come to one conclusion if you have not done so yet, that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the safest pair of hands into which we can entrust our mandate,” he said at the Nation Building Updates.

  • Are they confused or they think we have short memories? Bawumia on free SHS debate

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed shock over claims by former President Mahama that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) introduced the free Senior High School education policy.

According to the Vice President, he is not sure whether the leadership of the NDC is confused or assumes Ghanaians have short memories.

Delivering a presentation on â€œa case for 4 more years to do more for you” Thursday November 26, 2020, Dr. Bawumia said it is shameful that the party that bastardised the free SHS policy when it was introduced by President Akufo-Addo, will now be fighting for credit.

“They said it was a hoax, a 419 promise.  They said if he had GH¢2billion they would not spend it on free SHS. They said free SHS would collapse the education system.

“The NDC run over 40 adverts against free SHS. But the visionary Nana Akufo-Addo stuck to his guns and has successfully implemented the free SHS policy.

“Today, the NDC is saying they started free SHS! “Awurade Nyankopong!” he added.

The Vice President explained that although the NDC in a bid to prevent the implementation of the policy took the matter up at the Supreme Court, that promise to Ghanaians by the NPP has been fulfilled.

According to him, the government has not only alleviated the suffering of parents, but the targets set for the policy have also been exceeded.

“So far, we have invested over GH¢3.2 billion to implement free SHS, resulting in over 1.2 million teenagers being in secondary school now, looking forward to better opportunities in life.

“For their parents and families, this has translated into GH¢2.2 billion in savings. That is money that the State has put back into the pockets of Ghanaians all across the country.”

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia used the opportunity to urge all Ghanaians to be mindful of the clueless stewardship of former President John Mahama prior to the election of the NPP government in 2016 so as not to jeopardize the progress made by not retaining the NPP.

“We ask you to give us four more years because our government, borne out of the NPP, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has kept faith with you, Ghanaians, by delivering on the commitments we made to you.

“We are on track, having significantly delivered on our mandate,”  the Vice President said.

  • Ghana has recorded the lowest cedi depreciation under Akufo-Addo Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said Ghana, under the administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, recorded the lowest depreciation of the cedi since 1992.

The former deputy governor of the Central Bank said although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected economies all over the world the Akufo-Addo government has ensured a low inflation rate thereby impacting the strength of the cedi positively.

“In four years, we have stabilised the economy. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, which has impacted all economies in the world, we have reduced inflation, and inflation continues to fall. We have doubled economic growth in the first three years, we reduced the exchange rate depreciation. The exchange rate depreciation has been relatively stable. Ghana has recorded the lowest rate of depreciation [of the cedi] in the last 28 years in 2020.

“Notwithstanding COVID and its implications and notwithstanding that this is an election year, Ghana in 2020 has seen the lowest depreciation since 1992,” he noted.

According to him, “the average depreciation of the cedi over the last four years, which is at 7.3% is the lowest for any first-term government since 1992. We significantly reduced the deficit.”

  • Bawumia makes a compelling case for re-election of Akufo-Addo

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a strong case for the retention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in office ahead of next month’s election.

At a characteristic, data-ladden presentation Thursday night [November 26, 2020] at the University of Ghana in Accra, Dr. Bawumia told the Akufo-Addo government’s story, taking his audience and Ghanaians through a trajectory of the challenges Ghanaians faced under former President John Mahama, the “dire” economic conditions the Akufo-Addo government inherited from the Mahama-led NDC, the key promises the NPP made in 2016, the successful programmes and interventions in the last four years by the Akufo-Addo government, as well as its vision beyond 2021.

    Economic challenges under Mahama

Dr. Bawumia set the tone for his presentation by recalling the mismanagement of the economy and its accompanying harsh conditions that had hit the country under the administration of former President Mahama.

“I am aware you need no reminders of the dire economic conditions at the time we came into office. You lived and breathed it, and bore the human cost of the economic mismanagement that was visited upon us by the Mahama-led NDC government,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The Vice President reminded Ghanaians about the many challenges, which included: growing unemployment leading to the formation of Unemployed Graduates Association, the effects of four years of ‘dumsor’ which led to job losses, high electricity tarrifs, collapsing NHIS and ambulance service, lack of basic facilities like textbooks and chalks in public schools, cancellation of nursing and teacher trainee allowance, backlog of unemployed nurses, non payment of teachers, burdensome taxes and what he said were series of scandals.

“It was clear that the Mahama-led NDC government had lost its way, failed Ghanaians, and did not have any idea how to get us out of the ditch it has driven us into.”

    Akufo-Addo govt’s 2017-2021 governance blueprint

Dr. Bawumia noted that having been overwhelmingly voted for by Ghanaians in 2016, the Akufo-Addo government set out to roll back the human cost of the economic mismanagement by the previous government and to create the foundation for an inclusive, prosperous Ghana.

The Vice President added that the Akufo-Addo government’s vision was broadly anchored on seven objectives, which he said were to: “stabilise and grow the economy, transform the economy, create jobs, especially for the youth, modernise, digitise and formalise the economy, make development inclusive and protect the vulnerable, fight corruption and create a safe, secure environment for citizens and businesses to thrive.”

Promises fulfilled by Akufo-Addo in 4 years

Having stated the Akufo-Addo government’s governance blue print for its first term, Dr. Bawumia then provided in detail, how the government has achieved its seven six stated objectives and how they have positively impacted on the people.

On the first policy objective, which was to stabilise and grow the economy, Dr. Bawumia noted that before Coronavirus devasted the world’s economy this year, the Akufo-Addo Addo government had achieved it objective of stabilising and growing the economy it inherited from the NDC.

“Prior to the Coronavirus pandemic which has impacted all economies in the world, we established the economy. We reduced inflation, doubled economic growth in our first three years, reduced the rate of exchange rate depreciation; the exchange rate depreciation stabilized with Ghana recording the lowest depreciation in the last 28.”

“We have also reduced the fiscal deficit (pre covid-19), improved our external payments position, which is stronger today than it was in 2016 (notwithstanding the pandemic). Interest rates are on the decline in line with decline inflation expectations.

The Vice President also referenced the clean up of the “mess in the financial sector that we inherited,” including government’s decision to pay up to 50,000 to all customers of affected Fund Management Companies on “compassionate grounds”.

“We took the decisive decisions to avoid the collapse of the financial sector, save the deposits of 4.6 million depositors and save jobs. Thus far, government has spent GH¢21 billion to clean up the sector. 99% of depositors of the affected banks, microfinance and savings and loans companies have been fully settled.”

The Vice President noted that the impressive performance of the Akufo-Addo government, led to Ghana becoming the investment destination of choice in West Africa and has led to new opportunities for Ghanaians and businesses.

“The relatively strong performance of the economy, among other things, led to Ghana becoming the destination of choice for Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in West Africa according to the 2019 World Investment Report by UNCTAD.”

Just two days ago, Bloomberg reported ad follows: “Ghana was one if the first countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to lower interest rates to counter the virus shock and its economy has performed better than forecast even as the pandemic stalled activity and the oil price slumped.”

    Transforming the economy beyond stability

Dr. Bawumia said the Akufo-Addo government did not only seek to stabilize the economy, but they also took steps to transform the nature of the economy by improving agriculture productivity to reduce dependence on food import, add value to raw materials through industrialisation and reduce the cost of energy and of running businesses and industries in Ghana.

“These we have achieved through Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development and Rearing for Food and Jobs. PFJ has led to a 71% increase in the national production of maize and 34% in paddy rice. Yields per hectare of maize, rice, and soybean have also increased significantly and we now export 19 different food items, including maize, to the rest of ECOWAS countries.”

“Again through One District One Factory and Strategic Anchor initiatives, we are adding value to our raw materials through industrialisation. In four years, 76 companies are in operation and a total of 107 1D1F factories are also under construction. We expect every district to have a factory in the next 2 years.”

“We have also abolished or reduced 15 taxes and levies to reduce the burden of taxes on businesses and individuals. This is unprecedented in the history of economic management in Ghana.”

“We have also reduced electricity tarrifs for residential, business and industrial customers. No government in the history of Gjana has reduced electricity tarrifs in net terms during its term of office.”

    Jobs for the youth

Vice President Bawumia said, the Akufo-Addo government took the “bull by the horns” to address the major unemployment challenge the youth faced during Mahama’s administration.

“In 4 years, we have created over two million jobs in the formal sector, including and through government programmes such as NABCO, (100,000 jobs to unemployed graduates), NEIP, and Planting for Food and Jobs.”

“We have also hired nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers, recruited new teachers, police officers, and many others in the public sector after many years of employment freeze under the previous government.”

    Modernised and digitised economy

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the fulfillment of the objective by the Akufo-Addo government to modernise, digitise and formalised the Ghanaian economy, which he said was largely informal.

He revealed that when they came into office, “Over 90% of Ghanaians had no unique identity, there was no working address system, over 70% of the bankable public had no bank accounts, most transactions were cash based, less than 10% had Tax Identification Numbers, and clearing goods at the port, obtaining a driver’s license, passpirt, renewing your NHIS card, purchasing electricity units, obtaining birth certificates,” and many others, were manual and became breeding grounds for corruption as bribes were demanded.

He said the Akufo-Addo government “made the strategic decision to address these chronic problems by digitising the Ghanaian economy as well as the prices of delivery of many government services to increase government revenue, eliminate corruption and ultimately provide public services to citizens more efficiently and more conveniently.”

Dr. Bawumia noted further that with the successful issuance of digitised national ID cards to 15.5m Ghanaians in 4 years, the implementation of mobile money interoperability, digital address system and the digitisation of various government services, the Akufo-Addo government has made significant strides in its digitisation agenda.

    Inclusive development

Dr. Bawumia also showed in detail how the Akufo-Addo government has addressed the exclusion of many communities and citizens from the “proverbial national cake”.

He said in fulfillment of his promise to build a Ghana that works and gives each and every one opportunities, President Akufo-Addo has spread infrastructure development projects to every district in the country, and has also introduced many all-inclusive interventions, which everyone is benefiting such as Free WASSCE and BECE exams registration, ambulances for every constituency, one village one dam for farmers in the north, Coronavirus relief package for electricity and water, Free SHS and TVET, among many others.

    Elections 2020 and beyond

Dr. Bawumia stated unequivocally that President Akufo-Addo has delivered on his 2016 promises and appealed to Ghanaians to give him 4 more years to continue with his good works and move Ghana ahead.

“We ask you to give us four more years because our Government, borne out of the NPP, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo , has kept faith with you, Ghanaians, by delivering on the commitments we made to you.”

Dr. Bawumia said President Akufo-Addo has been able to restore in 4 years, what Mahama and the NDC destroyed in 8 years, and he deserves another 4 years to continue to stimulate economic growth, support industrialisation, accelerate agriculture modernisation, consolidate 1D1F and the implementation of Free SHS and TVET.

“On December 7, remember that we have achieved together, and what, we can achieve together over the next four years, and vote to retain Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President, and for NPP MPs, all of whom are number 1 on the ballot, so we can deliver once again on our mandate.

  • VP Bawumia commissions Sheikh Sharubutu Sports Complex

The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned an ultra-modern sports complex at New Fadama in Accra.

The sports complex, funded by the Zongo Development Fund, saw the complete transformation of the old New Fadama Park, and it has been named after the National Chief Imam, an illustrious son of the community.

Addressing Zongo chiefs, Imams and thousands of people during the commissioning, Vice President Bawumia said the complex was constructed and named after the Chief Imam in fulfilment of a promise to him by President Akufo-Addo on the occasion of his 99th birthday in 2018.

“This gathering is a culmination of a noble gesture by President Akufo-Addo in April 2018, on the occasion of the 99th birthday anniversary of our father, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, to build an ultra-modern sports complex for the youth of New Fadama and name the facility after the National Chief Imam, a true icon of our nation,” Dr Bawumia said.

“Transforming this popular football park into an ultra-modern edifice for the football-crazy youth of New Fadama and its environs is as apt as naming the facility after the most iconic member of this community, and one of the greatest statesmen this country has produced, Dr Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.”

With the construction of the complex, the Akufo-Addo government has now constructed 29 Astro turfs across the country in four years, and ten out of the 29 are located in Zongo communities across the country.

Dr Bawumia explained that President Akufo-Addo, as a former footballer in his youthful days, recognises Zongos as a hub for football talents, hence his government’s decision to invest in the provision of modern football parks and stadia to help unearth, nurture and promote more talents in Zongo communities.

“Historically, Zongos have produced some of the nation’s finest footballers like Baba Yara, Mohammed Polo, Sulley Muntari, etc. and it is our vision to help unearth more of such talents in the Zongos; that is why we are investing in these sports complexes.”

The Vice President stated that the transformation of the previously grassless and dusty Fadama Park into an ultra-modern complex for the youth of Fadama is part of the broader vision of President Akufo-Addo to prioritise and accelerate the development of Zongos, using the Ministry of Zongo and Inner Cities Development and the Zongo Development Fund as vehicles.

“Through the creation of the Ministry of Zongo and Inner Cities Development and the Zongo Development Fund, many Zongos are witnessing accelerated infrastructure development and opportunities for human resource development.”

“The Zongo Development Fund has supported the building and rehabilitation of access roads, bridges, drainage systems, clinics, toilets and water systems in many Zongo communities in all sixteen regions.”

Dr Bawumia also highlighted the Akufo-Addo government’s investment in education in Zongo communities such as the building of classroom blocks, providing tertiary grants to needy students and awarding scholarships to 40 students from Zongo to study medicine in Cuba on a government scholarship.

Having stated many achievements of the Akufo-Addo government in the Zongos, the Vice President was unequivocal in stating that no government in the history of Ghana has paid as much attention to Zongo communities as the Akufo-Addo government has done in its first term of office.

He appealed to the people of Zongo to reward President Akufo-Addo by voting for him to give him four more years to continue with his good works.

  • Government has no plan for clients of Menzgold Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said that the government does not have any plan for clients of defunct gold dealership firm Menzgold.

According to him, the government is only dealing with legal entities that were closed down due to corporate governance issues.

“We are dealing with legal entities and the government has paid depositors who lost their monies to the various financial institutions that were legally dealing with the people and that includes clients of DKM,” he said this while speaking in an interview on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio.

“But for clients of Menzgold, the government does not have any plan in sight for them because they were dealing with an illegal entity, and when they were warned, they virtually told the government to stop disturbing them.”

He said that until the government takes another position on the issues bothering Menzgold Ghana, the government cannot pay depositors their monies.

  • NDC has disappointed you for 28 years; give NPP a chance – Bawumia urges Afram Plains constituents

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made a passionate appeal to constituents of Afram Plains North and South constituencies in the Eastern Region to reconsider their voting pattern after consistently voting for the NDC without corresponding development to show.

The two mainly island constituencies have been voting for the NDC – both Parliamentary and Presidential – since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

At durbars in Donkorkrom in Afram Plains North and Ekye Amanfrom in Afram Plains South constituencies on Monday, traditional rulers in the area lamented their long neglect, as well as the deplorable state of the constituencies.

Speaking at the two durbars, Vice President Bawumia wondered why the two constituencies, which have been so loyal to the NDC is lagging in terms of development.

“For twenty-eight years, you have voted for the NDC and you have been loyal to them but there is nothing to show here for all the support you gave them even though they have been in government for years,” Dr Bawumia said.

“In all these 28 years, the MPs have been NDC MPs and they could not get their NDC governments to bring development to the people of Afram Plains, especially under the last NDC government which lasted 8 years in office.”

“The NDC has done nothing for Afram Plains and they cannot point to any substantial development they have brought to the people. The evidence is out there and Nana has confirmed it.”

Dr Bawumia noted that unlike the NDC, the ruling NPP is a party which believes in all-inclusive development, and has, therefore, spread development projects to many parts of the country, including Afram Plains where electricity has been expanded to rural communities, as well as the construction of chips compounds and mechanical boreholes.

Dr Bawumia added that the Akufo-Addo government has already earmarked development projects for Afram Plains, including the provision of tractors to the district assembly to enable farmers, who constitute the majority of the constituents, to rent them at affordable rates to improve on their farming.

The Vice President noted that in view of the fact that the NPP has brought about national interventions such as Free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs, Zongo Development Fund, One Constituency One Ambulance, among others, which everyone is benefiting, as well as showing good faith to Afram Plains, it is about time the constituents said no to the NDC.

“It has been 28 years of neglect and disappointment by the NDC. This year, let the NDC know that enough is enough,” Dr Bawumia stressed.

“We urge you to give the NPP a chance and you will see the difference between the NPP and the NDC.”

  • Akufo-Addo’s free SHS is a game-changer for females – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s flagship Free Senior High School (FSHS) has significantly increased female enrolment for secondary education in the country.

In a media interview on on Monday, October 12, Dr. Bawumia explained that, the introduction of the Free SHS policy had ended a disturbing trend, which saw the education of many females from poor families being truncated in favour of sponsoring a male child due to lack of funding.

The introduction of the Free SHS, Dr Bawumia indicated, had solved many social problems including; the improvement in female enrollment at the secondary school level.

“Prior to the introduction of Free SHS, there was this situation of families who couldn’t afford to pay fees of all their children and normally sacrificing the females in order to mobilise money and concentrate on the male child.

“This situation left the girls behind and many of them ended up as house girls. It was all because parents could not afford to pay all children and the family would decide to sponsor the male and drop the female,” the Vice President observed.

The Vice President said the policy was well- thought out by the compassionate Akufo-Addo, who brought it to give all children free access to secondary education to alleviate the suffering of parents.

“President Akufo-Addo is a compassionate leader and the Free SHS policy was meant to build an educated population by giving all children from every part of the country, regardless of the social and economic status of their parents, free access to secondary education,” he emphasised.

The policy, he said, had resolved many problems such as lifting financial burden off parents and improved enrollment of female enrollment.

“Now people find it difficult to get young girls to be their house girls.” Dr Bawumia stated.

  • Vote for Nana Akufo-Addo to continue with the development – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has asked Ghanaians to retain the government in power to continue with the many developments and social intervention programmes.

He said the December 7 election would be a choice between the era of untold hardships under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the few years of social interventions programmes by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said under the NDC, Ghanaians encountered five years of power outages, youth unemployment, non-functioning ambulance service, arbitrary increase in utility and the absence of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs).

Dr Bawumia, who said this when he addressed a Durbar at Atobiase in the Wassa-East District to begin his two-day working visit to the Western Region, appealed to Ghanaians to give President Akufo-Addo the chance to change the fortunes of the country.

According to him, the NPP Government pursued a vigorous agenda to bring relief to the people of Ghana such as the free SHS policy, 1D1F, restoration of teacher trainee and nurses trainee allowances, planting for food and jobs, cocoa interventions and producer price increases, among others.

Dr Bawumia said the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic had gained global recognition and commendation with the free provision of water and electricity, COVID-19 alleviation fund to business owners, tax rebates and free meals to the populace during the lockdowns and students.

Nana Opiah Mensah, Acting Chief of Wassa Atobiase, in his address, commended the government for the unprecedented infrastructural development in the area.

He advocated the construction of a senior high school for the town since it was far from the district capital, Daboase.

He called for the provision of a mobile telecommunication network to solve the area and making it difficult to make calls and use internet services.

Nana Mensah also reminded him for the construction of a bridge over the Pra River to connect the residents to the neighbouring towns which makes it difficult for the children to cross during school days, as promised by President Akufo-Addo some time ago.

Mr Joseph Boahen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCOBOD, noted that the free SHS policy had benefitted the majority of Ghanaians without which many children would have dropped out of school and called on the people to vote for the continuation of the policy.

Touching on cocoa production, he announced that the cocoa pruning and hand pollination initiative introduced by the government has tremendously changed cocoa production in the country, bringing big relief to farmers.

He urged the people not to take the National Democratic Congress’ ( NDC) propaganda of free fertilizer seriously and said it was not achieved when they were in government.

The CEO of Cocobod touched on the compensation package given to cocoa farmers whose farms were affected by the swollen shoot disease and said that was a huge investment of the NPP Government towards cocoa production.

He hinted that fifty-thousand youths would be engaged to embark on the cocoa tree cutting exercise to rid the farms of the dreaded swollen shoot disease for a replant.

Mr Boahen added that the cocoa pension scheme was vigorously pursued to give a befitting retirement package to cocoa farmers in the country.

Mr Wilson Arthur, Wassa-East District Chief Executive touted achievements in the education and skills training sector and said scholarships were given to students to further their education to higher levels and livelihood empowerment programmes.

He mentioned that the District had benefitted from two of the One-District, One-Factory (1D1F) initiative programmes to create employment to the teeming youth.

He said the administration had seen a lot of infrastructural developments in the three years.

Among the projects are the provision of potable water, construction of access roads, provision of the skills development centre and improvement in mobile telecommunications network among others.

  • Bawumia cancels durbars to commiserate with flood victims of the north

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cancelled his scheduled durbars with some prominent chiefs in the north in order to commiserate with flood victims of the north.

Given the spillage of the Bagre Dam in neighbouring Burkina Fasa coupled with torrential rains, several persons have been displaced and hundreds of acres of farms submerged in water.

So far, 10 people have been killed up north by floods caused by the spillage and torrential rains. Some victims have been forced to seek temporal shelter in school buildings within the communities with roads leading to major town rendered inaccessible to motorist mostly within the North East and Upper East Regions.

Dr Bawumia who was speaking Bolgatanga-based URA radio disclosed that there was the need to assess the situation and provide assistance to the displaced persons in the affected areas.

“I have cut short my durbars in some area and will need to go round and commiserate with the victims of the flooding. Government will also be looking at providing some relief items to them in order to ameliorate their plight”. He disclosed.

According to him, the level of devastation is disheartening indicating that the perennial flooding will be a thing of the past upon the completion of the $1 billion multi-purpose Pwalugu Dam.

“At the end of the day, this is a problem that we have kept experiencing year after year and the question I am sure is in the minds of every Ghanaian is what are we doing about it?

“We have basically understood that to deal with this problem fundamentally, we have to have a flood control in the context of the Pawlugu Dam.

“That is the most important antidote to all of these.

That is why we have moved to secure the Pawlugu Dam project, and this project is the biggest dam project we have in the northern region”, he said.

He said the dam is “the single biggest investment in northern Ghana since independence”.

“It is about 1 billion dollars and the contractors are on site”, he noted.

In an example of his love for humanity, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has built, furnished and formally handed over a two-bedroom house to an 82 year old cured leper who had been abandoned by her family at Motori in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region.

Dr Bawumia’s humanitarian gesture was inspired by a Joy News documentary which depicted the sorry plight of Daari Pogo, who was forced to live in a dilapidated 5 meters by 6 meter mud hut with her grand daughter Adjara after her abandonment.

Touched by her appalling circumstances, Dr Bawumia immediately mobilised resources and within six weeks, built and furnished a two bedroom house for Madam Pogo [PICTURE OF NEW HOUSE BELOW].

“As you know, I am a Patron of the Lepers Aid Society, which helps to rehabilitate cured lepers. When I saw the Joy News report by Seth Kwame Boateng I was deeply touched, and immediately reached out to help.

“It appears as if she has been abandoned by her family due to her unfortunate affliction. But that is not how we should treat each other; we should be each other’s keeper.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dropped a hint that the current government intends to upgrade the Animal Health And Production College at Pong Tamale in the Savelugu District of the Northern Region into a University of Agriculture.

According to him, this would ensure that the study of agriculture, which is the mainstay of residents of the area, is given a boost as this will build the capacity of persons interested in the field of study; who will in turn impart the knowledge directly onto farmers.

Speaking to Yoo Naa Yakubu Abdulai Andani at his Palace in Savelugu, the Vice President underscored the significance of agriculture in the country noting that the upgrading of the institution, which is one of the oldest in the region, would make a significant impact in the lives of many.

“The Akufo-Addo government intends to upgrade the Pong Tamale Agric College into a university to help promote the studies of Agriculture at an advanced level which will directly impact positively on food production among others,” he disclosed.

  • Dagbon is heavily indebted to Akufo-Addo Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that the north especially Dagbon is heavily indebted to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for bringing about lasting peace.

He noted that before the coming into office of the current administration, there was recurring chieftaincy violence due to the irreconcilable differences between the Abudu and Andani royal families; but Nana Addo stood his grounds and worked towards resolving the long-standing feud.

Speaking at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi during a courtesy call on Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, the Vice President said” the biggest problem in Ghana prior to the assumption of office of the Akufo-Addo administration was the recurring violence in Dagbon and the need for peace. Akufo-Addo promised to bring finality to the raging Dagbon crises if made president”.

According to him, skeptics doubted him but he lived to his promise and ensured that the funerals of the two chiefs were performed and a new Ya-Na enskinned.

For this reason, he observed that the people of the area are forever indebted to the President for bringing about peace which is a major pre-requisite for development.

“Akufo-Addo promised to bring finality to the raging Dagbon crises and never slept over it when he was made President in January 2017. He ensured that there has been peace and you are the Ya-Na today. No money can pay for the peace so Akufo-Addo has left us with a huge debt”, he stressed.

  • Sammy Gyamfi’s data confirms 99.9% of NPP’s infrastructure data is accurate – Bawumia

Following Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presentation of the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure delivery record, the opposition National Democratic Congress, led by its National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi rubbished Bawumia’s claim and promised to expose him for lying.

Dr. Bawumia revealed that the Akufo-Addo government has delivered 17,600 infrastructure projects in different sectors which were at different stages of completion across all districts in the country.

For easier independent verification, Dr. Bawumia announced a government website which has listed all the infrastructure projects, sectors, locations and their current state of completion – completed and ongoing.

But soon after the Vice President’s presentation, the NDC National Communication Officer promised to offer rebuttals to Dr. Bawumia in 48 hours, that’s two days after the presentation.

However, Sammy Gyamfi pushed his date to criticize Dr. Bawumia forward by four more days.

On Monday, August 24, 2020, Sammy Gyamfi listed 26 projects, which he said were “ghost projects”.

The governing NPP has since questioned the authenticity of the 26 “ghost” projects the NDC has questioned.

However, the party has said if even it was to admit iti, it will represent an “insignificant percentage” to render Dr. Bawumia’s infrastructure presentation as “compendium of lies,” as Sammy Gyamfi described it.

By Sammy Gyamfi’s data of 26 “ghost”, projects out of 18,025 currently captured on the tracker which Dr. Bawumia presented, the NDC’s National Communication Officer has arithmetically conceded that 99.9% of Bawumia’s infrastructure exist, as the 26 “ghost” projects represent 0.1% of the 18,025 infrastructure projects the NPP has listed on its infrastructure delivery tracker www.deliverytracker.gov.gh

Meanwhile various actors on social media have on their own provided various evidences to dispute some of the claims by Sammy Gyamfi.

Evidence coming out indicates that the projects are actually existing however, misplacement of some of them in terms of where they are actually located abound. These include inadvertent swapping of districts with similar names during the inputting of data, but suggested the NDC is being mischievous with minor errors, which are being amended.

“For example, Sammy Gyamfi talked about projects in Adeifua, Beikyema Nkwanta on it, which is on going but they say it doesn’t exist. Also Derma Asuoso road, that road is ongoing and the contractor is on sight but they say it doesn’t exist.”

The Kanda water for instance, was one that was recorded as an ongoing project. People pointed out that it seems to have been abandoned so we checked from the municipality. And in fact they said that they did dig the borehole, but they found out that the water was bad so they decided to cap it and not continue with the project. So in their entries, they did not recognise it as an abandoned project. But those are very easy to amend.

The Vice President stressed government has demonstrated transparency by presenting its infrastructure achievements claims on a public website for scrutiny, and challenged the NDC to also present their records in every district for similar scrutiny.

  • It didn’t make sense to continue supporting the collapsed banks – Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says government had no option than to shut down some banks and financial institutions in the country.

He said even though the situation is sad it didn’t make sense to continue supporting these banks that are suffering.

“It was bad . . . when I saw the numbers at the time it was quite frightening,” he said.

He said the banks were using the Central Bank’s liquidity support for other purposes.

This follows claims that government could have used other means to save the banks and prevent the loss of jobs.

The Vice President who was speaking in a one-on-one interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show ‘kokrokoo’ said the then NDC administration was aware of the situation but did nothing about it and rather kept offering liquidity support.

“The NDC was aware there was a problem . . . these were bad practices of government but we had to step in,” he stated.

“By the time we got into office things were unraveling; we were on the brink of the collapse of the system so the BoG had to rescue the situation. This is one of the most important acts that have been done to save the economy.”

  • NPP manifesto: Concentrating on Airport means there’s nothing else to talk about – Bawumia tells critics

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the fact that critics are concentrating on only the construction of an airport in Cape Coast means their manifesto is so great that there is nothing else to talk about.

The NPP, in its 2020 manifesto, has promised to construct an airport in the Central Region.

However, this promise has been criticized with some describing it as not viable.

In an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Dr Bawumia said: “concentrating on the airport means there is nothing else to talk about . . . after everything that was said in the manifesto, you will expect the policies to be interrogated by your opponent and other people alike but the issues being interrogated is the airport”.

    Cape Coast Airport

The Vice President also refuted claims the construction of the airport is not a necessity and will not be helpful to the region.

He said, “it will be a good thing for Cape Coast; the amount of traffic going to Cape Coast is quite significant and when you are looking at infrastructure, you have to look at it from the long term. The airport will provide a long convenience for tourists coming in and it will boost other industries.”

    Airport not for votes

As the country is in an election year, one would think the promise to construct an airport in the Central Region is to gain votes; however, the Vice President says ‘that’s not the case’.

“Indeed the idea has been around for a long time but the time has come for us to put that as a key policy of infrastructure to get it done. The people of the Central Region deserve an airport,” he added.

In an exclusive interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show hosted by Kwame Sefa Kayi on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, the Vice President indicated that the management of State Housing Company has done a yeoman’s job in running the outfit efficiently.

In his belief, if State Housing Company is adequately funded, a lot more could be achieved.

“They can build more houses, affordable ones, if we give them more” he stressed.

  • We cut $1.2bn MoMo interoperability cost to $4.5m Bawumia

The Akufo-Addo government saved the Ghanaian taxpayer more than $1 billion in the award of a contract for the purpose of creating the mobile money interoperability, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said.

According to Dr Bawumia, before the NPP came into power, the erstwhile Mahama administration had awarded the contract for $1.2 billion.

The contract was, however, cancelled by the Bank of Ghana when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) came to power and awarded it to a different company that executed it for $4.5 million.

Dr Bawumia disclosed this in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM on Tuesday, 25 August 2020.

The Mobile Money Payment Interoperability is the service which allows direct and seamless transfer of funds from one mobile money wallet to another mobile money wallet across networks.

It was developed by the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) with active collaboration of the mobile telecom industry.

It creates convenience for mobile money users to transact business and drives financial inclusion, lowers cost of transaction, increases service reach and reduces reliance on cash for payments.

It also provides a financial transaction engine that is versatile, efficient and robust and enhances patronage by both banked and unbanked segment of the population.

Talking about the cost of the Mobile Money Payment Interoperability, Dr Bawumia said: “When we came, there was a contract to do the interoperability and that contract was to be done for $1.2 billion but at the end of the day, we looked at it, there were conditions that were not yet satisfied and the Bank of Ghana terminated the contract and instead of spending $1.2 billion to do mobile interoperability, we spent $4.5 million…”

Dr Bawumia further stated that Ghana has become the fastest-growing mobile money market in Africa as a result of the mobile money interoperability since 2018.

“Since 2018, when we did interoperability, Ghana has become the fastest-growing mobile money market in Africa, the fastest-growing and it is just very remarkable.

“Today, mobile money transactions, as of 2019, was 200 million transactions.

“If you look at banking transactions for 2019, it was 599,000…so, mobile money has been turned on its head now. Mobile money is more used than your traditional bank as banking transactions are only three per cent of the total,” the Vice President disclosed.

  • Our infrastructure projects provide value for money – Vice President

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says the Akufo-Addo government, has, apart from its pursuit of an inclusive infrastructure development for all, has also focused on delivering the best value for money for all of its projects.

During his presentation of the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure record on Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia revealed staggering disparities in the value of similar projects undertaken by the erstwhile John Mahama government and current projects by the Akufo-Addo government.

In Dr. Bawumia’s comparative value for money analysis, the cost of projects undertaken by the Mahama government appear to be quiet outrageous.

For instance, the Vice President said while the NPP government is constructing four major interchanges; Tema, Pokuase, Tamale and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges at a cost of $289m, the Mahama administration built the Kwame Nkrumah interchange alone at a cost of a staggering $260m.

For the Pokuase interchange, which is 75% complete, Dr. Bawumia explained that the loan agreement for the project was signed in November 2016 for a three-tier interchange, but the Akufo-Addo government renegotiated for a four-tier interchange without any increase in cost.

Another major interchange, which is part of the interchanges the NPP government is building in its first term, is the Tamale interchange.

The Tamale interchange, the first ever interchange in the Northern Sector of the country, is 44% complete and is expected to be completed by the middle of 2021.

Last week, Vice President Bawumia cut the sod for the construction of another three-tier interchange at Nungua barrier as part of the construction of the Accra-Tema beach road.

The Vice President has also announced that next month, a sod will be cut for the construction of an interchange at PTC in Takoradi.

Apart from the value for money comparison in the road sector, analysts have also raised eyebrows on disparities in the cost of hospitals the current government is building and those built under Mahama.

While the Akufo-Addo government recently cut sod for a 600-bed Eastern Regional hospital at a cost of €70m Euro, the Mahama government rehabilitated the Ridge at a cost of $220m.

  • We are completing inherited projects – Vice President

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shot down claims by the opposition NDC that the Akufo-Addo administration has neglected projects it ‘inherited’ from the previous government.

Presenting the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure record in Accra on Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia said it is pure propaganda for anybody to claim that the current government has not continued with projects initiated by its predecessor.

“Contrary to the propaganda, the evidence is that we have also completed or working to complete many projects that our government inherited,” Dr. Bawumia said.

In the educational sector for instance, the Vice President noted the government has completed some of the E-blocks it inherited and is also in the process of completing the rest.

“Contrary to propaganda, in addition to what we have done, we have also completed several health projects that we inherited from the previous government,” the Vice President noted.

“Out of 30 infrastructure projects inherited, we have completed 16 of them including 10 polyclinics and 2 district hospitals. There is also ongoing construction of another 9 district hospitals.”

In his infrastructure presentation, Vice President Bawunia spoke extensively on the massive infrastructure investment made by the government of President Akufo-Addo since assuming office in 2017.

Infrastructure projects in key sectors such as education, health, roads, railways, water and sanitation, sports and energy featured prominently in Dr. Bawumia’s presentation.

To ensure independent verification of all infrastructure projects the government has undertaken since 2017, Dr. Bawumia announced a government delivery tracking website wwwdeliverytracker.gov.gh, which provides detailed information on projects, location and their current status.

  • Ghanaians to use Ghana Card numbers as TIN for business transactions next year

The Government, through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has begun processes to convert the National Identification numbers into Tax Identification numbers (TIN) to ensure easy payment of taxes.

The move will allow Ghanaians to use their Ghana Card numbers to register their businesses and expected to shore up government revenue.

This is expected to commence from January 2021, which would increase the number of taxpayers from less than three million to 16 million.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia announced this when he addressed the delegates of the National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party in Accra.

Dr Bawumia added that the Government had secured US$ 200-million World Bank support to implement the Jobs and Skills Development programme.

The programme is expected to be implemented from now till the next five years, to improve the entrepreneurial skills and productivity of the Ghanaian youth.

Some high profile personalities that graced the occasion included Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, Chief of Staff, Freddie Blay, and National Chairman of the NPP, Samuel Awuku, National Organiser of the NPP.

The forum coincided with the celebration of the International Youth Day held on August 12 every year, to recognise the contributions of the youth towards national development efforts and to create awareness about their challenges with the ultimate objective of finding solutions to them.

Vice President Bawumia enumerated some initiatives rolled out by the Akufo-Addo’s government to formalise the economy including National Digital Property Addressing System, issuance of the National Identification Cards (Ghana Card), Mobile Money Interoperability Payment System, measures underway to integrate the databases of the NIA and Births and Deaths Registry and other state agencies for easy accessibility of information.

The National Chairman of the NPP Mr Freddie Blay urged the party youth not be distracted by the ” “propaganda promises” by the NDC’s flag bearer but should remain focused and campaign vigorously across the nook and cranny of the country to retain the party in power.

“Leverage on your energies, strengths, and creativity by adopting innovative campaign strategies to win more votes for the Party”, he advised.

The Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Osei Frema Opare, entreated the party youth to remain united and fight with a common front to retain power in the general election.

She acknowledged the hard work and enormous contributions of the NPP Youth Wing over the past years and urged them not to rest on their oars but rather work even harder in this year’s electioneering.

Sammy Awuku, NPP National Organiser urged the Youth Wing of the Party to widen the one million vote margin recorded in the 2016 Presidential Election.

To achieve that feat, he said, the Party must work hard to win more than 800,000 of the two million new voters captured in the just ended voter registration exercise.

Alhaji Abdul Aziz Haruna Futah, the NASARA Coordinator, enumerated several projects initiated in the Zongo Communities by the government to improve livelihoods of the Zongo Youth and urged the Zongo Communities to show their appreciation by voting massively for the NPP government in the December polls.

Mr Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP National Youth Organiser, acknowledged the efforts of the Party’s Leadership and Government’s contributions towards their activities and enhancing their capacity.

He, however, called for more support to enhance their work, especially by using social media platforms to reach out to the grassroots.

He gave the assurance that the Youth Wing of the Party would mobilize and leverage on innovative strategies to win more votes for the party.
