Eddie Howe is optimistic that as the season comes to a close, his Newcastle players won’t be intimidated by the task of earningChampions League qualifying.
The Magpies have four games left to lock up a top-four Premier League finish as they compete for place behind leaders Manchester City and Arsenal with Manchester United, Liverpool, Brighton, and outsiders Tottenham.
The chasing pack may have thought that the Gunners’ 2-0 home loss last weekend would slow their progress and signal a late-season slump, but head coach Howe was having none of it.
Eddie Howe on the run-in:
"The lads have been incredible in every game bar one or two this season. They've given me absolutely everything. Now we have four games to try to consolidate all of that effort to achieve something remarkable. That's what we're looking to do, just keep… pic.twitter.com/BGVtLQwvdJ
Asked if the air around the training ground was a little heavier as a result of what is at stake in Saturday’s trip to relegation-threatened Leeds, he said: “The air should be lighter, not heavier.
“We’re excited, that has to be our emotion. We’re looking forward to the challenges ahead, we’re not in any way, I don’t feel, daunted by it.
“In sport, sometimes the more you think the more you damage yourselves, so play the game. These players have played all their lives and played because they enjoy it, so let’s strip away everything and let’s just perform well in our next game.”
Newcastle head into the latest round of fixtures sitting in third place and knowing two more wins would almost certainly secure a place in European club football’s biggest competition next season – which would represent a significant upgrade on their target when they set out in August.
Howe admitted: “The aim was to not be in another relegation battle, try to stay clear of that and then build a lot of aspects of the team and play to be successful and sustain that success long-term.
“Things have snowballed, now we sit where we do and we’ve done incredibly well.”
In the process, the Magpies have found themselves thrust into the limelight with opposition managers having taken aim at both their game-management and physicality.
Asked if he felt they had people rattled, Howe said: “We hope to be a nuisance for all teams. We don’t want to be nice to play against.”
Howe’s players will need to bring all that to bear at Elland Road, where Leeds are engaged in a desperate fight for top-flight survival with former Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce having been parachuted in to engineer a rescue mission.
He and Howe were touted for the vacant England manager’s job back in 2016 before Allardyce got the nod for what proved to be the briefest of reigns.
“Without remembering, I’d probably say I felt I shouldn’t maybe have been in that frame at that stage of my career,” Howe said. “I felt I had so much to achieve and experience before being elevated to that position.
“But it’s always a compliment and you always take it in the right way, that it must mean you’re doing something right in your job to be elevated to those levels.”
A bullish Allardyce ventured on his appointment at Leeds that he was as good a manager as Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta, but Howe says he was not disappointed to be left off the list.
“I wouldn’t be arrogant enough to push my name into that list,” he said.
Manchester United manager Marc Skinner believes that approaching the sold-out Women’s FA Cup final against Chelsea as a business-like event will give his team the best chance to win their first major trophy.
The match, which is set to break attendance records, will take place at Wembley.
Skinner draws lessons from his previous experience when Manchester City defeated his Birmingham team 4-1 in the 2017 FA Cup final, emphasizing the need to strip away emotions and focus on the task at hand.
Skinner said: “What we got wrong at Birmingham is that we made it a massive event. We made it bigger than it should have been.
“Everyone knows it’s a big deal, but we put quotes on the wall from players and families. We made mistakes, and that was naivety.
“It became an emotional event rather than a clear business-like event.
“You can celebrate after if you win the cup and be as emotional as you want, but the reality is there’s going to be enough emotions in the game that we need to save them up.
“I’ve learned from that and we have to manage stages of the game better than we did at Birmingham. These are the factors we are looking to develop for this one.”
United’s women’s team have had a remarkable rise since their formation in May 2018.
They were promoted from the Championship in their inaugural season and currently top the Women’s Super League, holding a one-point lead over serial winners Chelsea who have a game in hand.
Emma Hayes’ Chelsea are chasing a third successive league and cup double, but Skinner insists the Wembley clash will have no bearing on the title race.
He said: “I’m not thinking about that at all. I am solely focused on a one-off game.
“For the first time I’ve allowed our players to separate the games and we are looking at this before two difficult games in the league (against Manchester City and Liverpool).
“This has no effect in our league and we are going to treat it as such, play it as the one-off event that it is.”
Skinner is adamant there is no extra pressure on him on Sunday, even though women’s football will be under a fierce spotlight both in the stadium and around the country with a nationwide television audience.
“It’s not pressure I don’t have every day,” said Skinner. “I even think there’s more pressure on us than Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester City because we are Manchester United.
“I’m sure there will be some nerves, but I’m fuelling my focus and attention to maximise this because, if we win, it will be massive.”
United captain Katie Zelem is available after suspension as Norway defender Maria Thorisdottir misses out with the foot injury that ended her season prematurely.
Despite his absence, Mitrovic had been training regularly with the team and had scored 11 goals in 21 games in the Premier League, after helping Fulham secure promotion from the Championship with a record-breaking 43 goals in the previous season.
“Mitrovic is back and it’s always good to have him back,” said Silva, whose side travel to bottom-club Southampton on Saturday.
“It’s been tough, I won’t hide it from you. His behaviour has been really good all this period, with support from ourselves. He knew from the first day it was going to be different from a normal ban or normal injury.
“He was always working with the team. It was a tough period for him, of course. It will be good to have him back.
“It was a strong feeling for us, it’s clear it was an exaggerated thing. We admitted as a club that you cannot react in that situation.
It’s clear, he did it, he admitted the mistake but the number of games, if you compare with other situations, is completely different. We as a club keep strong and we keep supporting him.”
Silva has rotated who he has used in the central attacking position in the Serbia striker’s absence, withCarlos Vinicius taking on the role during Monday’s 5-3 win against Leicester and scoring his fourth of the season.
Daniel James and Bobby Decordova Reid have also been deployed as strikers as the Cottagers maintained the push to break their record top-flight points tally of 53, which was set by Roy Hodgson’s side in 2009.
Silva was especially impressed with Vinicius’ performance in the rout of Leicester.
“It’s what any manager wants really,” Silva added. “It was the reason why we signed Carlos.
Of course with more game time, and making good things, bad things, mistakes, make the players grow of course with some important goals.
“It’s given (him) the confidence he needs. It’s nice to see him performing better and better the last few games.
“It’s important to have a player like Mitro, a player like Vini, and I have to say even we won two games with Daniel James as a striker and Bobby as a striker. Different profile and we were able to win that game against Everton and Leeds at home.
“That shows that everyone knows his role, everyone is fighting for the club and can pop up in certain moments of the season.”
Silva declined to comment on whether negotiations had begun with the club over a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season.
“Nothing new,” he said. “It’s a moment of the season when everyone is going to talk about managers, about players, about everything. There are rumours around everything.
“When you do a good season of course, it’s a consequence of the performance, the way the team is playing. It’s a normal situation. If there’s something new, we’re going to announce it.”
Diogo Dalot’s remarks regarding the potential replacement for David De Gea appear to align with the sentiments of the Manchester United dressing room towards the Spanish goalkeeper.
De Gea’s mistake during the match against West Ham United gifted the opposition a goal and resulted in a defeat for United, which was a significant setback to their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
This season, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has faced criticism for his inability to possess the necessary footwork for building attacks from the back, a system that United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, is known to prefer.
According to Mirror UK, the shot-stopper’s contract expires in the summer but he had agreed to an extension, only for his manager to reportedly tell him he is not guaranteed a starting role next season.
Dalot praises Diogo Costa
According to Sports Mole, Porto’s Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya are considered potential replacements, with De Gea set to be a back-up goalkeeper next season.
Man United right-back and an international teammate of Costa, Dalot has clarified his feelings about his childhood friend who could be coming to England in the summer.
“I grew up with him, he’s my friend, there’s a great relationship between us. I know perfectly well that he has the capacity to one day be a world reference,” he was translated as telling Mais Futebol.
While Dalot did not seem certain the move to Manchester United would materialise, he believes Costa would be a big-name player where he goes.
“I don’t know if he’ll be at Manchester United or another big club in Europe. He shows at FC Porto that he is a differential goalkeeper and has helped the club a lot. If he continues there, I’ll be extremely happy. If he leaves, I hope he has the greatest success in the world.”
United fans lament De Gea
Sports Brief also reported thatUnited fans want De Gea out of the club after his recent string of poor performances, which have led to opposition scores.
The news of the club reportedly extending his contract was not well-received, but it has since emerged that the Spaniard is not guaranteed to start.
Manchester City’s unbeaten record in the Champions League now stands at 21 games.
Pep Guardiola’s team has been unbeaten since early February, with 17 victories and four draws, as they prepare for the finish of the season and a possible trophy treble.
City are aiming to repeat Manchester United‘s 1998-99 achievement of winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League all in the same season.
Thirty-seven points from the past 39 available have enabled them overtake long-time league leaders Arsenal, with four games remaining and a one-point advantage over the Gunners.
They have beaten their title rivals twice in that time, 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium and 4-1 back home a fortnight ago.
Improbably, relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest are the only side to take a point off them in that time after Chris Wood’s late equaliser.
Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester, Fulham, West Ham and Leeds are their other victims, with 36 goals scored in those 13 games and 10 conceded.
Their other draws have come in the away legs of their three Champions League ties, all 1-1 against RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Real.
The home legs against the two Bundesliga sides saw Leipzig beaten 7-0 and Bayern 3-0, while in the FA Cup they beat former City captain Vincent Kompany’s Burnley 6-0 and two other Championship sides, Bristol City and Sheffield United, 3-0 to set up a Manchester derby in the final.
Such form in the run-in is nothing new to City, who won last season’s league title by a point after finishing with a 12-game unbeaten run including nine wins and also won their last 14 in succession to pip Liverpool to the 2018-19 title – as part of a domestic treble.
Erling Haaland is unsurprisingly City’s top scorer in the current run with 20 of City’s 61 goals.
That includes back-to-back hat-tricks against Leipzig – with an astonishing five goals – and Burnley, helping him past a half century for the season while he has a record 35 for a Premier League campaign.
Kevin De Bruyne’s stunner against Real was his seventh goal of the run while Haaland’s sometime deputy Julian Alvarez has six.
There have been five apiece for Riyad Mahrez, who scored a hat-trick in the FA Cup semi-final against the Blades, Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan. Twelve City players in all have scored, in addition to an own goal from Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham.
Winger Jack Grealish spoke after the draw at the Bernabeu of his confidence of reaching the Champions League final, based on City’s formidable home record.
“Within ourselves at the Etihad, we feel unstoppable there,” the England international told BT Sport after playing his part in a feisty first-leg encounter.
His view is borne out by the statistics, City winning all 11 home games in their current run with 40 goals scored and just five conceded.
That sequence at the Etihad extends to 15 straight wins since their New Year’s Eve draw with Everton and 17 unbeaten since losing to Brentford in November.
Away from home, since the Tottenham defeat, City have won six games and drawn four, scoring 21 goals and conceding eight.
Once again,Kylian Mbappe has fueled speculation about a summer transfer to Manchester United.
Rumors suggest that the club’s possible new owner, Sheikh Jassim, is keen to make high-profile signings if he takes over the club, with Mbappe being at the top of the list.
Aside from these reports, Mbappe has been dropping hints that he may be considering a move to Old Trafford.
It remains unknown whether he does it knowingly or not, but the fact of the matter is, at least two of Mbappe’s recent Instagram posts have had the word ‘Manchester United’ embedded in them.
Mbappe’s cryptic Instagram posts
It started on February 14 when he took to his account after Paris Saint-Germain had just lost the Champions League round of 16 first leg to Bayern Munich.
Mbappe was barely fit for that game and came off the bench and despite his best efforts, he couldn’t impact the game.
He wrote, ‘Tout reste à faire’, and tagged his club, which when translated, means ‘All that remains to be done’ or ‘Everything has to be done’ ahead of the second leg.
However, Instagram translated it to ‘All that remains to be done... Manchester United’s team is now on @psg.
This was passed off as perhaps Mbappe rallying his teammates to pull off a comeback in the second leg the way United had done on them a couple of seasons back against all odds.
However, when the same script repeated itself on May 7, it became apparent that it wasn’t a comeback or anything of that sort.
Mbappe had just starred in PSG’s win over Troyes and this time, he wrote, ‘Un peu plus près’, which means ‘A little bit closer’ to imply the Ligue 1 title. Instagram translation picked it up as ‘A little closer… Manchester United’s team is now on @psg.
One thing that stood out in both posts was immediately after his French caption; what followed was the ellipsis sign (…) and two coloured circular emojis, a red one followed by a blue one, then he tagged his club.
Sports Brief repeated the same trick but used ‘je suis journaliste sportif’ which means I am a sports writer as a caption.
We then followed it up with the ellipsis, the coloured emojis and tagged PSG. Upon sharing the story, Instagram translated the caption to ‘I’m a sports journalist… Manchester United’s team is now on @psg’.
Verdict
Sorry Manchester United fans, it seems like Mbappe is not doing this knowingly. It looks like there is an Instagram glitch as far as the translation is concerned.
What’s interesting, though, is why of all clubs, the translation feature settled on Manchester United. When the same caption is used but one tags a different club, the caption remains as written.
Either it is a glitch or Instagram has specific emojis that denote certain teams.
Doesnt mean Mbappe can’t sign for Manchester United. Have some faith – it’s the hope that kills.
When Mbappe praised Rashford
Sports Brief had earlier reported that Mbappe andMarcus Rashford are arguably among the fastest-rising stars in modern-day football. The former especially has already exacted his presence with blistering performances on the biggest of stages, such as the World Cup final.
the idea of these two possibly linking up at Old Trafford next season creates an interesting prospect.
Mbappe and Rashford already have a rapport and have the greatest amount of respect for each other. They have met a couple of times, the most recent being the World Cup quarter-final, where France triumphed over England.
Following his farewell game in charge of Manchester United versus West Brom at the Hawthorns, Sir Alex Ferguson thanks the traveling supporters.
Ten years have passed since Manchester United officially announced Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement on Monday, May 8, 2023.
Despite the incredible measures United took to keep it a secret, the story surfaced in the media the night before the official announcement.
It may be claimed that ten years later, the club hasn’t really recovered from Ferguson’s departure.
The Scot remains the most decorated manager in British football.
He won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, two Champions Leagues, a European Cup Winners’ Cup, a European Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a Fifa Club World Cup during his time at Manchester United.
Add to that the three Scottish titles, four Scottish Cups, Scottish League Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup and European Super Cup he won as manager of Aberdeen.
Now 81, in his autobiography ‘Alex Ferguson’, he detailed why he decided to quit after nearly 27 years in one of the game’s toughest and most high-profile jobs.
‘”I’m going to retire,” he told wife Cathy, around Christmas 2012.
‘”Why are you going to do that,” she replied.
“Cathy, who had lost her sister Bridget in the October and was struggling to come to terms with that bereavement, soon agreed it was the right course. Contractually, I was obliged to tell the club by 31 March if I was going to stand down that summer,” wrote Ferguson.
So set in motion the wheels for Ferguson’s departure. It was also the beginning of an attempt to keep one of the biggest stories of the Premier League era under wraps at perhaps its most-scrutinised club.
BBC Sport has spoken to a number of sources around United at that time for an insight into the process that ended with an amazing 5-5 draw in Ferguson’s last game as a manager at West Brom on 19 May.
The Real Madrid clue
Ferguson told United chief executive David Gill of his plans early in 2013.
Gill had initially called their meeting to tell Ferguson of his own departure.
Having worked closely with Ferguson for more than a decade, Gill wanted the manager to be among the first to know he intended to stand down the following summer, hoping a lack of club ties would improve his chances of taking a seat on Uefa’s powerful executive committee.
However, Gill was surprised to hear Ferguson reveal that the current season would also be his last at Old Trafford.
The news stayed secret for months.
Long after the 31 March deadline passed, only a select few, including United’s owners, the Glazer family, knew of Ferguson’s impending exit.
However, looking back, there was a giant clue.
On 5 March, United were knocked out of the Champions League in controversial fashion by Real Madrid. They had been ahead in the tie when United winger Nani was sent off. On the touchline, Ferguson was furious.
When the teams returned to the dressing room, Gill went to speak to Mike Phelan, Ferguson’s assistant.
Phelan had been Ferguson’s regular stand-in for post-match interviews with the BBC during the manager’s seven-year boycott of the broadcaster over a disputed documentary about his son Jason.
In addition, the only time the United manager conducted the separate post-match media conferences was after European games when it was a contractual requirement.
Despite the magnitude of the game and the unprecedented nature of the request in a European context, Gill told Phelan that he would have to take the place of an upset and angry Ferguson in front of the media. Ferguson said the same.
The feeling was Ferguson might say something he would regret.
Phelan told the media Ferguson was “distraught” and “in no fit state” to talk to them.
March 2013: Sir Alex Ferguson is “distraught” after Real loss, says his assistant Mike Phelan
What Ferguson and Gill knew, but neither Phelan nor anyone in the media were aware of, was that the loss signalled the end of the manager’s final chance to lift the trophy he coveted the most once more.
His combination of rage and incredulity at the performance of Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir was heightened by the knowledge there could be no chance of redemption. In Champions League terms, it was the end.
Putting a plan in place
It wasn’t until early April that the circle of trust was widened.
Even then, it extended to no-one other than those who, for operational reasons, had to know about Ferguson’s departure and, crucially, could be trusted.
A couple of weeks later, on 22 April, United secured the title when Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win against Aston Villa.
Van Persie had been recruited from Arsenal the previous summer, having received personal assurances from Ferguson that he had no plans to stand down.
But the Scot had changed his mind and that title success paved the way for a plan to be put in place.
It was not a given at that time United would arrange an open-top bus parade to celebrate winning the Premier League.
They famously didn’t have one after winning the Premier League and Champions League in 2008, nor the following season when they won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.
However, on the basis Manchester City had celebrated their own success 12 months earlier with a parade, nothing seemed too unusual in United saying they wanted one as well.
Those at the club with responsibility for marking key moments were told to push the boat out. It was, after all, they were told, a milestone 20th championship. Behind that push lay the knowledge it would also be marking Ferguson’s last.
Still, hardly anyone knew the reality. The announcement of Ferguson’s departure was set for the morning of Wednesday, 8 May.
On the Tuesday morning, a meeting was called for various staff members.
They were told to prepare for a big announcement, as big as it was possible to be, for the following morning. The tone of the conversation was to steer people towards believing it was transfer or sponsorship related.
But, at the end of the meeting, a lone voice stated firmly “the king is dead, long live the king”. Those present who were aware of Ferguson’s exit were stunned.
It hadn’t been spelt out but there could be no greater steer as to what was about to unfold.
As the meeting broke up, so the rumours spread, initially across United’s Carrington training ground, then out, to the annual golf day organised by former players at the exclusive Dunham Forest course in Cheshire.
Rumours began to spread among the Manchester United squad as they attended a charity golf day on the day before Ferguson confirmed his departure
As speculation swirled, staff in the know realised their secret was getting away from them.
Senior figures on the coaching staff received text messages informing them of the golf day gossip.
Key website workers were told to report to Old Trafford for 06:00 BST the following morning. Some, who got on well with the media, were bombarded with calls and eventually opted to switch their phones off.
The announcement
The stories of Ferguson’s impending departure appeared online later that evening. The Telegraph was first, but were followed almost immediately by the remainder of Fleet Street.
By the following morning, the reports were being carried by radio and TV outlets.
Ferguson was not happy. He wanted the information to come from him.
As the staff he worked closest with arrived for work, he asked to see them. He apologised for the manner in which the information had come out, but confirmed he was standing down. The meetings were brief, no longer than 10 minutes.
Preparations then continued for the final two games – against Swansea and West Brom – as though nothing had happened, even though almost all were blindsided.
In the preceding months, Ferguson had been part of numerous meetings to discuss that summer’s pre-season trip to Australia and the following campaign. He was in good health. Nothing hinted at the massive decision he had made.
Then Ferguson went to see his players. At the same time, the official announcement was being prepared for release.
The response of the players was typical of a group of younger men being addressed by an older one. There were a myriad of jokes about the lack of dressing-room dressing-downs in the future, of their relief Ferguson was finally going and predictions he would change his mind anyway and be back next season.
At Old Trafford the mood was more serious and more tense. The number of staff arriving early alerted security staff to a something significant in the offing. It merely reinforced what they were reading and hearing in the media.
The day Sir Alex resigned
Those responsible for publishing the information were taken to Box 30, or the ‘War Room’ as it is known internally, on the first tier of the East Stand. It is the most private hospitality box at the stadium. Most recently it was seen in promotional video Ferguson filmed with Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to publicise the clubs’ pre-season meeting in San Diego this July.
The actual detail of the press release was only finalised 10 minutes before it was due to go live.
The statement itself, containing lengthy quotes from Ferguson, Gill and co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer, was checked and re-checked to make sure it went out without error. All involved understood the scale of what would happen when the send button was pressed.
Sure enough, for a while, the United website couldn’t cope as the number of visitors brought it to a standstill.
Back in the canteen at Carrington, Ferguson, accompanied by son Jason, spoke to remaining staff. It was an emotional morning. He had to steady himself on a couple of occasions to get through. Little wonder, once his various addresses had been made, he felt the need to return home to Wilmslow to clear his head.
The final games
Four days later, Ferguson’s final programme notes were published. Unlike some managers, who don’t write or even read them, he always spent time thinking about the message he wanted to deliver.
“It is the right time,” he said.
“It was important to me to leave the organisation in the best possible shape and I believe I have done so.”
He paid tribute to his wife and family, his players and staff, club legend and friend Sir Bobby Charlton, Gill and the Glazer family.
He finished with this thank-you to the fans:
“It has been an honour and enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United.”
Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ and Nat King Cole’s ‘Unforgettable’ were played before kick-off.
Rio Ferdinand didn’t quite score the winner in ‘Fergie-time’ but the 87th minute was late enough to be a fitting end to Ferguson’s last game at Old Trafford.
He emerged, in the pouring rain, to take the acclaim of a packed stadium.
Merchandise sellers around Old Trafford worked fast to produce commemorative t-shirts ahead of Ferguson’s final home game against Swansea
Typically, he took the microphone and declared he had “no script in his mind, I am just going to ramble on” before finding exactly the right words, across four minutes, including “you have been the most fantastic experience of my life” and “your job now is to stand by our new manager”. His grandchildren then accompanied him on a final lap of the stadium.
One week later, at West Brom, it really was the end.
The United players presented Ferguson with a 1941 Rolex watch, marking the year of his birth. They also gave him a book of photographs depicting his time at United. It included shots of his family, who were with him on that final momentous day at the Hawthorns.
He had a meal with his coaching staff on the night before the game, although given the level of uncertainty some of them were experiencing, the mood was reflective rather than celebratory.
Ferguson was said to be relaxed in the dressing room beforehand, but his behaviour was reasonably normal for a matchday.
A trade union shop steward in Glasgow’s shipyards before he moved into football, Ferguson’s final team talk concentrated on working-class values. He urged his players to show their personalities, play the Manchester United way and play to win.
He had a joke with fourth official Chris Foy when he made his way through the guard of honour formed by players of both sides. As usual, he sat between Phelan and first-team coach Rene Meulensteen on the bench.
There was the familiar sight of him chewing gum in frustration as Romelu Lukaku completed a hat-trick and West Brom fought back from 5-2 down to claim a draw. However, those close by noted the usual anger was missing.
At the final whistle, Ryan Giggs pushed Ferguson in front of the players to acknowledge the visiting fans. Paul Scholes was supposed to be with him as he prepared for his – second – retirement but, typically, the then media-shy midfielder was nowhere to be seen.
May 2013: Ferguson salutes fans one last time
Back in the dressing room, Giggs reflected on the manner of the ridiculous result and, with the then-Everton manager already extensively linked as Ferguson’s successor, joked: “David Moyes has just resigned.”
Ferguson’s coaching team went for the usual post-match chat with West Brom boss and fellow Scot Steve Clarke, who in his programme notes for the game had said: “The scale and eloquence of the tributes that have come his way speak volumes for the scale of his contribution to the game.”
West Brom had taken the unprecedented step of including an astonishing 40-page tribute to Ferguson in their match programme. Later they sent on the official teamsheets, all signed.
The end of an era
Looking back, United were in the process of making a number of mistakes.
That night, half a dozen key staff met for a drink on the outskirts of Manchester to discuss what had happened and where United went from there. There were no big meetings planned to outline the future.
Ferguson, understandably, decided to step away completely to ensure his presence didn’t restrict Moyes as he took over the reins.
Incredibly, United did not buy Moyes out of the remainder of his Everton contract. It was 1 July – a month and a half after Ferguson’s final game – before he could begin work properly.
Moyes faced the media for the first time, alongside Nemanja Vidic in a news conference to promote the club’s pre-season tour a few days later. But he was already playing catch-up and never recovered the ground.
Within 12 months, in addition to Ferguson, Gill and Scholes, Phelan, Meulensteen, goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, Ferdinand, Vidic and full-back Patrice Evra had all left the club. Giggs retired. Within two years, respected youth team coach Paul McGuiness and academy director Brian McClair had gone as well.
It really was the end of an era. Nothing at Manchester United would ever be the same again.
Ferguson’s successor David Moyes was sacked 10 months into a six-year contract at Old Trafford
When David de Gea transferred to Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, he was 20 years old.
Although David de Gea has remained a fixture in the Manchester United goal for more than ten years, is his future at Old Trafford now in doubt?
The Spaniard committed a terrible error on Sunday, allowing Said Benrahma to score the game-winning goal for West Ham and jeopardizing Manchester United‘s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
The 32-year-old has now made four errors leading to a goal in all competitions this season, the joint most of any Premier League player, along with Hugo Lloris.
In February De Gea said contract talks at Old Trafford would “end in a good way” and he was “enjoying it” – but for many fans and pundits this may be one mistake too many.
“If he’s in contract negotiations, making mistakes like that is never going to help,” former Liverpool, Tottenham and Stoke striker Peter Crouch told BT Sport.
“He’s been a top-class goalkeeper over the years, but at the moment it feels like he’s making big errors in big, big games.
“David de Gea has had a shocker, we can’t dress it up. You can’t justify it at all, it’s a terrible mistake.”
Former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas was equally critical, telling BT Sport: “That’s beyond shocking. His team is in full control of this game and to let one in like that. He’ll know himself.”
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand added: “It’s a bad mistake. He will take full responsibility for that.
“His left foot does slip slightly but that’s no excuse, he’s got full contact on the ball. It’s not like he is stretching and getting fingertips on it.”
David de Gea let Said Benrahma’s shot squirm free of his grasp’Everybody has to take responsibility’
There is no doubting De Gea’s pedigree. He has made more than 500 United appearances since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011, winning the club’s player of the year award four times and lifting the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League trophies.
Unsurprisingly manager Erik ten Hag leapt to the player’s defence, pointing out that he is in contention for the Premier League Golden Glove after keeping 15 clean sheets so far this season – two more than anybody else.
“Mistakes are part of football and in this team you have to deal with it and bounce back because it is a team sport,” said the Dutchman.
“Over the season he is the one with the most clean sheets and also we did it as a team. It can happen, it’s football but everybody has to take responsibility.”
But with his contract due to expire at the end of the season mistakes like Sunday are unlikely to help negotiations and leave the Red Devils boss with a decision to make.
Ferdinand says it is De Gea’s ability with his feet rather than any issue with his shot-stopping that may prompt Ten Hag to make a change.
“The question mark about him I think is whether he’s good enough with his feet to play the Erik ten Hag way,” he said.
“In terms of shot-stopping, he’s made a mistake today – but that’s not the area I question him. Is he a good enough footballer to play for Manchester United?
“The only person that can answer that is Erik ten Hag and we’ll know at the end of this season.”
Crouch added: “It’s a strange one, because he’s conceded goals from his own mistakes but he’s also kept the most clean sheets in the league.”
‘It really is time for United to move on from De Gea’ – your views
Jonny: Honestly do not know what has happened to De Gea this season. From a consistent Player of the Year contender to an even greater liability than Lloris in just one year. Renewing his contract now seems like one of the worst mistakes we could make.
Andrew: It really is time for United to move on from De Gea. His lack of quality distributing the ball is already at odds with what Ten Hag seems to want from his goalkeeper, and there are just too many errors in his game now.
Richard: In a game we have to win, De Gea is doing us no favours. Abysmal goalkeeping.
Seth: When we say De Gea is not good enough, this is just an example. The number of errors he made over the last few years, especially under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and now under Ten Hag is incredible. There is no way he should be a starter next season if we want to move forward.
Calum: Sadly there’s very little place for sentiment in sport if you’re looking to build a winning team, so it’s time for De Gea to go in my opinion.
Juventus is the latest club to express an interest in signingManchester United’s Mason Greenwood, according to reports.
The Italian Serie A team is believed to be using the presence of Greenwood’s former teammate Paul Pogba as a bargaining tool to persuade the troubled striker to join their ranks in Turin.
Greenwood has been out of competitive football for over 15 months, after being suspended by the club following allegations of sexual assault against him.
He was arrested and later released after the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew the charges.
The Red Devils are yet to allow the 21-year-old back into the fold as they complete their internal processes.
There have been reports of disquiet among the United players, especially the Women’s side, that his return could cause divisions.
As the Sun reports, Juventus have now entered the fray to offer Greenwood a route back to professional football.
Before his misfortunes, he was one of the most promising striking prospects in the world. other Italian clubs, AC Milan and Roma, are also believed to be interested.
Greenwood is contracted until 2025 and given his latest cases, he shouldn’t attract a huge fee should United decide to sell him. Juventus are said to be interested in a long-term loan deal.
Pogba, meanwhile, hasn’t had the best of seasons since rejoining the Turin club for a second stint. His minutes have been minimal, with injuries keeping him out of Massimiliano Allegri’s side. Allegri is chasing a top-four finish, with the Europa League title also a huge possibility.
Greenwood gives up on Man United
Previously, Sports Brief reported that Greenwood has reportedly informed his friends that he won’t play for the club again.
Greenwood, who hasn’t played for over 15 months after he was suspended, was hopeful of a quick return once his charges were dropped.
Greenwoodhas seemingly given up on representing the club again. The teenage star is said to have informed his friends of his decision even as he awaits the club’s verdict.
The Champions League aspirations of Manchester United were dashed when Alexis Mac Allister converted a thrilling extra-time penalty to propel Brighton to sixth place in the Premier League.
Nine minutes after the legal 90 had passed, the World Cup champion of Argentina confidently sent the ball into the top left corner after Luke Shaw was called for a handball following VAR intervention.
Albion’s 1-0 victory in a thrilling match at the Amex Stadium lifts them over Tottenham and Aston Villa, while United now have to keep an eye on fifth-placed Liverpool.

The Seagulls sit just four points behind Jurgen Klopp’s Reds with two games in hand thanks to the stunning late twist.
Brighton’s success partially avenges the spot-kick heartache they suffered at the hands of their opponents in the FA Cup semi-finals just 11 days ago and completes a league double over United.
The Seagulls also smashed their club-record top-flight points tally — moving on to 55, three more than they managed in the the 42-game 1981-82 season.
Antony and Anthony Martial wasted golden opportunities for United, who still have work to do to reach European football’s premier club competition next term following a painful climax.
Prior to Mac Allister’s last-gasp breakthrough, Kaoru Mitoma missed the Seagulls’ best opening of a feisty encounter, thumping the ball into the head of David De Gea during a rapid start.
United keeper De Gea was visibly dazed by the unconventional stop but was deemed fit to carry on following on-field treatment.
With plenty at stake in the battle for continental qualification, players from both sides clashed in a heated second half after Antony’s crude challenge on Mac Allister sparked a mass brawl.
United travelled to Sussex with bitter memories of Wembley still lingering in the minds of the high-flying hosts.
The frantic opening exchanges suggested there would be no repeat of that cagey 0-0 draw, with both sides passing up glorious chances.
Antony fired wide after Bruno Fernandes’ pass carved open Albion’s defence inside two minutes, before Mitoma intercepted an under-hit Victor Lindelof pass and raced clear only to thump his effort into the face of De Gea with Julio Enciso awaiting a tap-in.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi overcame the illness which led to the cancellation of his pre-match press conference to take his place on the touchline.
The Italian was his usual animated self and passionately appealed for a penalty when Mitoma went to ground following minimal contact from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s outstretched leg.
United, who were thrashed 4-0 on this ground last May, remained dangerous on the counter-attack and caused constant issues for the home defence as they created the best first-half chances.
Casemiro headed narrowly over for Erik Ten Hag’s men, while Brighton keeper Jason Steele produced smart saves to deny low efforts from Marcus Rashford and Martial.
Travelling fans had once again unveiled a ‘Glazers out’ banner ahead of kick-off as ongoing protests against their club’s ownership continue.
Yet the sold-out away end would have taken plenty of encouragement from the opening 45 minutes.
Rashford tumbled easily inside the Brighton box just after the restart before the hosts enjoyed a period of dominance, albeit initially creating little.
Casemiro, who was earlier booked for scything down Mac Allister, escaped a second yellow in the 65th minute for a foul on the same player.
Home fans then felt further aggrieved when Mitoma went down in the penalty area for a second time, before tempers flared after Brazilian Antony chopped down fellow South American Mac Allister, leading to a booking for the United man and Brighton captain Lewis Dunk.
Casemiro drilled over, while Seagulls substitute Solly March, who missed the decisive spot-kick at Wembley, lashed wide and De Gea superbly denied Moises Caicedo as an enthralling affair looked set end all square.
But Shaw inexplicably handled a corner and after referee Andre Marriner consulted the pitchside monitor and pointed to the spot, Mac Allister thumped home.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s tenure has started off well, and he will now be looking at some summer signings that can make next season even more fruitful.
The Red Devils have already won this year’s Carabao Cup, advanced to the FA Cup final, and appear poised to earn a spot in the Champions League.
The next phase will be to mount a challenge for the Premier League championship after winning some hardware and possibly returning to Europe’s top tournament.
We examine some of the players Manchester United may target to fulfill that goal before their trip to Brighton.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the most successful football players of his generation, having won numerous individual and team accolades throughout his career. His departure from Manchester United in November 2021 left a significant impact on the team, as he was one of their top earners and star players.
Despite Ronaldo’s waning powers, he remains one of the most marketable athletes in the world and has continued to earn staggering amounts of money through his endorsement deals.
Forbes’ annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes revealed that Ronaldo earned £109million in 2022, making him the top-earning athlete for the year.
This is more than any other sportsperson, including his arch-rival Lionel Messi, who earned £104m. Ronaldo’s earnings come from a combination of his salary and endorsements.
He reportedly took home £36.6m in salary last year, in addition to an astonishing £71.7m in endorsements.
Ronaldo’s earnings have dwarfed those of his former Manchester United teammates. Since his departure, the team’s top earner is goalkeeper David de Gea, who pockets £19.5m annually, as per Spotrac.
In fact, it would take the salaries of United’s eight top earners to match Ronaldo’s total earnings last year. Jadon Sancho reportedly takes home £18.2m a year, with Raphael Varane on £17.68m annually.
The disparity in earnings between Ronaldo and his former teammates highlights the value that he brought to the club, both on and off the pitch.
The club has struggled to find a replacement for the prolific forward, and it remains to be seen how they will fare in the future without him.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has continued to play football in Saudi Arabia, where he signed a two-year contract with Al-Nassr FC.
Ronaldo’s success on and off the pitch has made him one of the most recognizable and marketable athletes in the world.
His endorsement deals with major brands such as Nike, Tag Heuer, and Herbalife have earned him millions of pounds every year, and his social media following is one of the largest of any athlete.
He has leveraged his fame and success to build a business empire that includes hotels, gyms, and clothing lines.
Cristiano Ronaldo. Apart from his lavish lifestyle and expensive styling, the sportsman has a natural interest in cars, which he has spoken about on a lot of TV shows. This is reflected in his extensive car collection, which consists of more than 25 cars that are valued at over $20 million today.

Cristiano Ronaldois a professional footballer from Portugal who currently plays for Al-Nassr.
He is considered one of the greatest football players of all time, having won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including five Ballon d’Or titles.
Ronaldo has played for several major football clubs, including Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.
He is known for his incredible speed, skill, and goal-scoring abilities, and has scored over 700 career goals. Ronaldo is also heavily involved in philanthropy, supporting various charities and initiatives to help disadvantaged communities.
Meanwhile there had been recent reports of alleged breakup with his long time girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez with whom he has five children is the stepmother of his first child (Cristiano Junior), raising the child as her own without involvement from the child’s biological mother.
The player went through a hard time during his son’s death, i.e, the male of the twins his wife gave birth to.
He disclosed in an interview with Piers Morgan, that it was a hard time for both himself and his partner, Georgina.
Aston Villa and Manchester United will compete for a top-four berth on Sunday, according to Unai Emery, both in “different moments” than when they first faced off.
Emery celebrated his first game as Villa manager in November with a memorable 3-1 Premier League home win over Erik ten Hag’s side.
United exacted revenge four days later with a Carabao Cup victory at Old Trafford, the Red Devils going on to win the competition and lift their first trophy for six years.
The two sides meet again nearly six months on with Emery having transformed Villa from relegation candidates to Champions League outsiders, six points behind fourth-placed United who have two games in hand on their Midlands rivals.
Emery said: “For us, it’s a very good challenge, it will be a very different match on Sunday to when we played at home when I arrived here.
“Very different match to when we played in the Carabao Cup there and lost 4-2.
Tottenham battled back to tie 2-2 with Manchester United despite knowing there must be no recurrence of their “unacceptable” St James’ Park disgrace, according to Heung-min.
Spurs’ dreams of finishing in the top four of the Premier League were dashed on Sunday by a 6-1 thrashing at Newcastle.
After that humiliating loss on Tyneside, interim manager Cristian Stellini was removed of his duties, and Ryan Mason assumed control of the team until the end of the season.
Tottenham looked to be in danger of suffering another mauling when they trailed the Red Devils 2-0 following goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.
But they rallied in the second half to salvage a point at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, Pedro Porro halving the deficit and Son equalising after being set up by Harry Kane.
Son said: “We wanted to give everything and that was the dressing room speech.
“We couldn’t let the game go. We were really angry about it, we didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down at half-time.
“The last week was unacceptable and we didn’t want to repeat that. We feel really, really sorry for the performance and result and we wanted to bring a good energy.
“We really appreciated [the fans’] support and they were fighting with us.”
Erik ten Hag has publicly for the terrible decisions he made during the April 27 match against Tottenham Hotspur.
In front of their own home supporters, Tottenham came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Manchester United.
Spurs supporters were expecting another humiliation after their surrender to Newcastle over the weekend, but Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford set United on their way.
After the break, though, January acquisition Pedro Porro drew one back, and Spurs missed a few good chances to either back level or even go ahead.
With United still leading, ten Hag surprised many by withdrawing Sancho and Cristian Eriksen just after the hour mark.
The two were one of the better performers of the night, with Fred and Anthony MArtial taking their place. 10 minutes later, the Dutch tactician followed it up with another dubious change, withdrawing Aaron Wan Bissaka for Tyrell Malacia.
Bissaka is one of the best 1 v 1 defenders in the world and the feeling would be, he needs to be on the pitch when you are protecting the lead.
His replacement, Malacia, was culpable for Spurs’ second goal as he allowed Harry Kane with enormous space to lay it out for Heung-min Son on a platter.
However, Ten Hag defended his ideas despite watching his side drop points again due to partly his changes.
“If you have seen the game, you have seen also in the period after half time we lose control in the game and I prepared the subs already before the 2-1 and you could see that goal coming.
“With Fred, you bring energy, one who can win the ball. On Sunday, he was brilliant. And with Martial, you bring one who can keep the ball and you can have Rashford, Antony and Bruno make runs behind and that was the idea.” as quoted by MEN.
Manchester United is prepared to step up its efforts to sign Harry Kane, the star player for Tottenham.
The Red Devils reportedly intend to launch a proposal for the England captain, who is entering the final year of his contract and is unlikely to sign a new one, according to The Telegraph.
When the club’s biggest asset’s contract expires at the end of the upcoming season, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will now have to decide whether to sell him or let him leave for free.
United wants to complete their business quickly because they are aware that they cannot afford a transfer controversy and run the danger of losing out on other targets, such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.
It has been suggested Spurs would be willing to listen to offers in the region of £80million from overseas for Kane, 29, but will demand at least £100m from fellow Premier League clubs.
A report in The Sun indicates United are willing to offer the striker a whopping £300,000-per-week contract to lure him to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are confident of landing Kane if Spurs finish outside the top four and that is now looking increasingly likely after Sunday’s 6-1 humiliation at Newcastle.
Spurs host fourth-placed United on Thursday sitting six points adrift of them in the race for the final Champions League spot.
Raphael Varane should be ready to play in Manchester United’s FA Cup final match against cross-town rivalsManchester City, according to Erik ten Hag.
Varane was taken out at halftime of United’s Europa League quarterfinal match against Sevilla after suffering an ankle injury in the first leg, which the Red Devils lost 5-2 on aggregate.
Ten Hag has recently had to utilise an improvised backline because to the season-ending metatarsal fracture that Varane’s central defensive partner Lisandro Martinez sustained in the same game.
With club captain Harry Maguire suspended, Luke Shaw partnered Victor Lindelof in the centre of defence as United reached a record-equalling 21st FA Cup final with Sunday’s penalty shoot-out win over Brighton and Hove Albion.
United will now face treble-chasing rivals City in a Wembley Stadium final on June 3, and the Red Devils are hopeful of having Varane available.
Asked whether Varane could feature in United’s second domestic cup final of the season, Ten Hag told talkSPORT: “I think so, yeah. Varane, for the cup final, he can return.”
Varane has made a total of 27 starts for United this campaign, having also been sidelined with ankle and leg injuries prior to last year’s World Cup.
United have fared well in Varane’s absence, winning 20 of their 25 games without him in the starting lineup across all competitions (L5), compared to 16 of their 27 with the Frenchman involved from the off (D7 L4).
Manchester United captain Katie Zelem has spearheaded her side’s title charge in the Women’s Super League this season.
The 27-year-old has featured in all 17 of the Red Devils’ top-flight matches in 2022-23 and has only been on the losing side twice.
Despite her fine form, the ex-Liverpool and Juventus midfielder was dropped from Sarina Wiegman’s latest England squad for the games with Brazil and Australia.
Ahead of today’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Brighton, we take a look at the United skipper in more detail.
Leading by example
Zelem’s work in the engine room has put Marc Skinner’s side in contention for both maiden league and cup triumphs.
Having grown up watching Alex Ferguson’s titans, the Manchester-born maestro has experienced first hand the highs and lows of football at the top level.
Now, she leads a women’s side who are fast becoming fierce domestic competitors themselves.
Only four players have provided more assists this season than Zelem and her quality in the final third will surely be giving England boss Wiegman a severe selection headache.
Seal of approval
Katie Zelem and Marc Skinner have forged a strong relationship at Manchester United
United have pulled out some huge results in the WSL this year and the 4-0 win over Brighton earlier this month will have been excellent preparation for today’s cup clash at Leigh Sports Village.
Zelem provided two assists in the thrashing and head coach Skinner could not hide his admiration of his No10’s qualities after full-time.
He said: “She has a big game brain. This girl sees the game two steps ahead and I’ve said it a lot.
“She sees stages and pictures and sometimes when people don’t move to things she’s seeing that maybe stumbles her — but that’s why she is the captain.
“She sees the game and produces the game plan with us. She helps gel our team.”
On the edge
Frustratingly, Zelem has found herself in and out of the England squad and will have been disappointed not to have been included for this month’s fixtures.
Despite her selection for the Arnold Clark Cup campaign in February, she did not play a single minute and was unable to add to her tally of seven international caps.
Of course, she faces tough competition in the form of Georgia Stanway and Keira Walsh, but the Lionesses’ 2-0 loss to the Matildas on Tuesday may provide Wiegman with some food for thought.
Capable of dictating the play and driving forward to great effect, Zelem would add another dynamic threat to a Lionesses team who are looking to return from Australia and New Zealand this summer as World Cup winners.
Weight of the world
Katie Zelem will be hoping to make the England squad for the World Cup this summer
Having also been snubbed for a place in the Euro 2022 squad, Zelem could be understandably frustrated that her club performances are not translating into international opportunities.
But the talented ball-winner is used to dealing with pressure and has previously opened up on what it is like to be such an influential figure at a club like United.
She said: “There’s a lot of pressure on my shoulders, but it’s something I relish, especially as a United fan.
“I feel so privileged that I can represent the club. I want to make the fans proud.”
Lifting the FA Cup in May would only add further weight to her England claims.
Erik ten Hag has made his desire to sign a new striker for Manchester United ahead of next season clear.
The Red Devils are still fighting on three fronts this season as they battle to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, as well as chasing glory in the FA Cup and Europa League.
United’s pursuit of glory to add to the EFL Cup crown secured earlier this year has come despite a lack of central options in attack.
Wout Weghorst was signed on loan in January following the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract before the World Cup in Qatar and, while performing admirably, is not the calibre of striker United are crying out for.
Ten Hag expects to change that when the window reopens for business, expressing the need for such a recruit.
“Everyone is different, obviously, but for a striker the main thing is to score goals by any method, that is so far ahead of anything else,” he told Sky Sports.
“We need a striker who scores goals because we have ability in the team to put balls in the box, so we need a striker to finish.
“We have to build a new future and we need a striker who not only scores goals but contributes by linking up play very well and pressing, which is very important.”
While recruitment of a new striker is clearly a priority for the upcoming transfer window, United will have to look within to provide the difference until the end of the season.

Having thrown away a two-goal lead on Thursday to draw 2-2 with Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, Ten Hag is keen for his side to be more ruthless.
“First it has to come out of the development of the team, so we are aware that when we are dominant in a game, we have to kill the game,” he added.
“We didn’t do that and we let the opponent back in the tie. That was not good, it’s a bad habit we have to hammer out.
“We demand from the players and the players demand from each other.
“You do your job always to 100 per cent, there are no ifs, buts or maybes, you have to deliver the performance in every circumstance.”
United are away to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday.
Although Cristiano Ronaldo has continued to score goals and set records since moving to Al Nassr from Manchester United, the team’s statistics following the Portuguese’s arrival are troubling.
Towards the conclusion of 2022, the 38-year-old left Manchester United and joined Al Nassr.
He had previously given a controversial interview to Piers Morgan in which he asserted that he had little regard for Erik Ten Hag and criticised the team for “remaining the same” following his original departure in 2009. When he joined the Saudi Arabia Giants, they were, albeit by a slim margin, in first place in the Saudi Pro League.
Al Nassr went into 2023 with 26 points from 11 matches, having won eight games and losing just once. That form saw them establish a point’s lead over Al Shabab who had a game in hand.
Al Nassr’s 2022 form
After the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, however, the club seems to have fallen off for some reason, if stats are anything to go by.
According to Footy Stats, Al Nassr have drawn three and lost once in their 12 league matches since Ronaldo’s arrival, a run that has seen them lose their top status on the table to Al Ittihad, who now sit three points clear.
In addition, s Super Cup defeat to Al-Ittihad 3-1 now means Al Nassr have lost twice in the same season to their bitter rivals.
Does Ronaldo make teams worse?
Ronaldo has always been used as a scapegoat wherever he has gone since leaving Real Madrid in 2018. At United, it was a similar story as Ronaldo emerged as the club’s top scorer in 2021/22, but the club ended up in 6th at the end of the season.
A topsy-turvy first half of the 2022/23 campaign for Unite led to a general feeling that perhaps Ronaldo was setting the team back, and it was similar case in his final season with Juventus, who finished fourth in 2020/21, and have never won the league since.
In a heartwarming conclusion straight out of a Hollywood film script, Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney kissed custodian Ben Foster in celebration of his team’s important win against promotion rivals Notts County.
Since purchasing the unfashionable Welsh club in 2020, McElhenney and fellow actor Ryan Reynolds have brought non-league Wrexham to a global audience.
The highs and lows of the squad and their famous owners were documented in the well-liked FX documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham.”
Monday’s 3-2 win against Notts County was perfect for the next instalment of the show as McElhenney and Reynolds watched from the stands while Wrexham moved within touching distance of promotion from the National League.
In a plot twist that might have been beyond even the imagination of Tinseltown’s finest screenwriters, Wrexham snatched the points when Cedwyn Scott’s penalty was saved by former Manchester United and England ‘keeper Foster in the seventh minute of stoppage-time.
Foster, 40, was only playing for Wrexham after coming out of retirement following an injury in March to the club’s first-choice ‘keeper Rob Lainton.
Wrexham have played in the fifth tier for the last 15 years, but, revitalised by their celebrity takeover, they are on the verge of a return to League Two.
McElhenney, a star of the ‘Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ sitcom, and Deadpool actor Reynolds were jumping with joy at the final whistle, with Wrexham now three points clear of second-placed Notts County with a game in hand.
Foster, who played in the Premier League with Watford last season, revealed McElhenney took his celebrations up close and personal.
“Rob kissed me fully on the lips and Ryan called me a double handsome b*****d,” said Foster, whose career has come full circle after a transformative loan spell at Wrexham at the start of his career.
“I said to them ‘Listen, you may as well end the documentary now. You’ll never get a better moment than what’s just happened’.
“They’re so happy, if you could order a top of the range owner, then you would just package them two up because they are as good as it gets.
It means so much to them, they were buzzing at the end, they care so much.
“This is non-league but they’re doing it like it’s Premier League standard, the way they travel, prepare, training sessions, the food, the recovery. It is ridiculous how they run it, so fair play to them they deserve all they get.” ‘Beautiful and torturous’ Beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Grimsby after finishing second in the National League last season, Wrexham are desperate to go one better this term.
They need seven points from their final four games to clinch the title, which guarantees the only automatic promotion place.
“It’s just insane to me in this league that only one goes up automatically,” Reynolds said. “If it were different — and I think it should be — both of these clubs would be celebrating together right now because what they’ve done is not only created drama unlike anything you’d ever see in a damn movie, but something that I think people will be talking about for ages.”
Wrexham’s heart-stopping victory, which featured several lead changes, came after Reynolds and McElhenney received the freedom of the borough at a civic ceremony earlier in the day.
The drama underlined to Reynolds why he and McElhenney made the surprise decision to transfer their love of US sport to a tiny Welsh football club. ‘
“I don’t feel like I have a heart any more. I think I used all the beats I had left during that match,” Reynolds said. “That was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and indicative of all of you lifers who have watched and participated in this beautiful, torturous game.
“I am actually grateful in this moment that I didn’t care about this years ago because it would have just eaten me alive. It’s troubling how hooked I am!”
As both managers gear up for critical matches in the Champions League quarterfinals,Pep Guardiola and Luciano Spalletti have ramped up their verbal spat.
Guardiola initially complimented Napoli quietly for the enormous achievements they have made this season, but now the two teams are constantly exchanging punches.
The Partenopei are close to winning their first Scudetto in more than 30 years, as the Manchester City manager earlier complimented.
What Spalletti said about Guardiola
However, as Sports Brief reported, Spalletti slammed Guardiola for his remarks by claiming that it is often a tactic of the Spanish boss to rattle other teams.
When asked if he was proud of the comments made by the Manchester City coach, the Florence-born manager retorted:
“No, I’m not proud. It doesn’t make me proud. It’s a game to put pressure on the rest. We all know it already,” he said, as quoted by Marca. “How are you going to put a team that invested 9 million euros ahead of a team that spent 900 million?
It’s a little game to say we’ll put you there and then you’re sure to fall.”
Guardiola’s response to Spalletti
Speaking ahead of his side’s UCL game against Bayern Munich, Guardiola declined to talk about Napoli, claiming Spalletti was being sensitive.
“I don’t want to talk about Napoli because the manager will be grumpy with me,” he quipped, as quoted by Football Italia.
Guardiola and Spalletii can only face off in the finals. Napoli play AC Milan, looking to offer an instant response after the stinging 4-0 loss after the international break.
Marcus Rashford’s injury poses a threat to the brilliance of Manchester United’s triumphover Everton, which was sealed by Anthony Martial’s first Premier League goal of 2023.
Poor finishing, dubious decision-making, and a run of Jordan Pickford stops kept Sean Dyche’s visitors from taking a beating at Old Trafford in the first half.
In a lopsided first period, United had a whopping 21 shots, but Scott McTominay was the only one who managed to score, and that came after Ellis Simms of Everton squandered a wonderful opportunity at the opposite end.
The Toffees improved after the break but Erik ten Hag’s men remained in control, with substitute Martial completing a 2-0 win as Rashford capitalised on a Seamus Coleman error.
The France international’s first Premier League goal since December came on his third substitute appearance after spending two months of this injury-hit campaign out with a hip complaint.
Martial’s return may have come at just the right time given the concerning sight of Rashford pulling up holding his groin late on, before limping heavily around the pitch and down the tunnel.
Everton were a pale imitation of the side that fought for a 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Monday and were on the backfoot from the outset on Saturday lunchtime.
Marcel Sabitzer saw an early shot deflected wide before Rashford was put through on goal, only to shoot straight at Pickford under pressure from James Tarkowski.
Antony sent a curling, bobbling effort off the post and Aaron Wan-Bissaka snatched at the rebound, inexplicably dragging across the face of the empty goal.
With numerous and recurrent occurrences of injuries plaguing the French striker, Anthony Martial of Manchester United, has turned to a glass in recent years.
He moved to Manchester United from Monaco in 2015 for £58 million, but the club did not regularly see the performance that warranted spending that much money on a youngster.
He could be one of many players who leave the team in the summer as part of head coach Erik Ten Hag’s huge exodus, which he faces an unclear future.
His recent problems are not only on the pitch.
He has a tough time off the pitch after his wife Melanie divorced him for cheating while she was eight months pregnant during the striker’s loan at Sevilla last year, according to Daily Star.
Martial’s exes involved in car chase Martial and Melanie started dating in 2016 after his move to Manchester United.
They married in a secret wedding in 2018, as reported by Soccersouls. He was previously dating Samantha Jacquelinet before his move to England.
The French model accused United of ruining her relationship, which disintegrated after his move to Manchester, as reported by Mirror UK.
The two women were involved in a car chase yesterday in France.
Melanie uploaded the video on her Snapchat, and it was obtained by Get French Football News.
The two women were involved in a car chase yesterday in France.
”She called her brother for help, we are supposed to be women,” the video’s caption reads.
The two have been involved in dirty fights since 2016.
Samantha accused Melanie of hounding her on social media and labelled the 30-year-old disgusting, as reported by Sun UK.
Ten Hag: Martial is fragile Sports Brief reported that United boss Erik Ten Hag revealed why Martial started off the bench in the 1-0 win over Brentford at Old Trafford.
The Dutch bossclaimed the striker is fragile, having dealt with multiple injuries recently and was not match-fit; hence he could have started.
Erling Haaland, who missed Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League victory against Liverpool, is back in training with Manchester City.
After suffering a groyne injury just before the international break, the forward was forced to leave his assignment with Norway last month.
Ahead of City’s return to action against Jurgen Klopp’s Reds last week, Pep Guardiola was non-committal on whether Haaland would feature.
Now, in a boost as they look to keep pace withArsenal at the summit, the striker is back on the training pitch ahead of this weekend’s trip to Southampton.
The two teams met for the first time sinceManchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 26.
Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scored in that game.
Using goals from ex-Arsenal player Joe Willock and striker Calum Wilson to defeat the Red Devils 2-0 at St. James Park, Newcastle exacted their retaliation.
The victory put Newcastle ahead of United, who now have a goal advantage despite being tied on points.
If Tottenham defeats Everton later today, the Red Devils could drop out of the top four.
Ten Hag had a blip of his own.
In the 83rd minute, with the scores still at 1-0, he subbed off centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, a decision termed bizarre by the Manchester Evening News.
Ten Hag explains defender subs
The Dutch manager’s decision came under scrutiny and Argentine defender, Martinez reacted angrily to the decision by smacking a chair in the dugout, as observed by Sun UK.
The decision did not pay off as Newcastle doubled their lead five minutes later through Wilson.
Ten Hag explained the decision after the game, as quoted by Metro UK: ‘‘We were not happy.
We played too high in midfield and it was easy for their two centre-halves to go and attack.
We had to play a little bit deeper. Therefore we made the sub. Then we made changes to bring more energy,’’ he said.
Marcus Rashford has called as “nonsense” claims that he is holding out for a massive £500,000-per-week contract to remain at Manchester United.
The contract of the England international, who has a career-high 27 goals in 44 games this season, is set to expire at Old Trafford at the end of the following campaign.
The Daily Star, a British publication, claims that Rashford’s future at United is uncertain because of the club’s ongoing sale and his high salary demands.
On his personal Twitter page on Wednesday, the 25-year-old, however, directly addressed the article and refuted it.
“Just before this one starts to do the rounds! It’s complete nonsense,” he posted. “The club and make self [sic] have been respectful to one another, and that’s how it will remain.
“My focus is purely on finishing as well as possible in the league and winning trophies.”
Rashford added on Instagram: “Another non-story flying around about my advisors and me making demands. It’s complete nonsense!
“My aim and the club’s aims are to finish as high as possible in the league and to try and win a cup or two.”
He has spent eight seasons as part of United’s first team since making his big breakthrough with two goals on his debut against Midtjylland in February 2016 as an 18-year-old.
Speaking last month, United manager Erik ten Hag confirmed the club are working on tying down the academy product to fresh terms.
“Of course [Rashford’s new contract] is a priority,” he said. “We are working on that. Just sit and wait. In the background. we are working hard.”
Rashford missed England’s two Euro 2024 qualifiers during the international window, but he is expected to be fit to feature against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo was looking forward to Portugal receiving the “breath of fresh air” under Roberto Martinez, but Bruno Fernandes disagrees.
Martinez has taken charge of Portugal for the first time in this international break, having succeeded Fernando Santos following the World Cup.
In the first round of Euro 2024 qualifying, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg were defeated 4-0 and 6-0, respectively, by the former Belgium coach’s teams.
Captain Ronaldo scored twice in each match, having earlier spoken of “fresh air now, different ideas and mentality” with Martinez at the helm.
Despite the positive start, that is not an assessment team-mate Fernandes agrees with.
“No, it’s just a new coach with new ideas,” the Manchester United midfielder told RTP3 after Sunday’s win against Luxembourg.
“There is no breath of fresh air at all. It’s just a transition period.
2 jogos, 2 vitórias! Objetivo cumprido. Feliz por ter contribuído para este início muito positivo da nossa seleção. Vamos!💪🏼🇵🇹 pic.twitter.com/mLmlAVGFiU
“The atmosphere in the national team has always been good. There’s never been anything that wasn’t fresh of the air, so I think it’s just new dynamics, new coach, and you have to assimilate his ideas.”
Fernandes was handed his Portugal debut by Santos, who had guided the Selecao to their first major honour at Euro 2016.
Portugal failed to build on that strong start to the coach’s tenure, however, exiting the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 at the last-16 stage.
Santos then departed after a shock quarter-final exit at the hands of Morocco at Qatar 2022, with Ronaldo dropped for the knockout rounds.
Before his arrest in 2022, Mason Greenwood reportedly had his behaviour discussed by Manchester United and the local police forces.
The 21-year-old was arrested at the end of January of last year after being accused of attempted rape, assault resulting in actual bodily harm, and using coercive or controlling behaviour towards the same woman.
He hasn’t played for the Red Devils since January 19, 2022, when he was suspended by United while an investigation was conducted.
It was revealed in February 2023 that the Crown Prosecution Service has discontinued proceedings against Greenwood due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence coming to light, with the CPS announcing that there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.
A source who worked with Greenwood at Old Trafford has told The Athletic that the Premier League club “were protective of him in different ways. He was an asset but they also wanted to help him reach his full potential. He made immature choices, but lots of young players do that, then they grow up a bit.”
United have rejected approaches from Turkish clubs for Greenwood since seeing criminal proceedings against him dropped, but he remains out of contention for selection at present and concerns regarding his behaviour remain.
It is alleged that regular absences from the Red Devils’ Carrington base have been unexplainable in the past, while he was dropped from the England squad in September 2020 after being caught – alongside Manchester City star Phil Foden – inviting girls into the Three Lions’ team hotel.
That was a serious breach ofCovid-19 restrictions, but it was not the first time that Greenwood had flouted those rules.
The Athletic reports that he would head out driving around south west Manchester during lockdown, while also holding parties at a rented Airbnb address in Salford despite a ban on social gatherings.
No formal action was taken by police, but it is claimed that they did visit United’s training centre to request that the club keep the player on a tighter leash.
Another source said: “Most athletes don’t know they’re going to make it, but he falls into the category where at 10 years old he knew it was a certainty. These are fewer and farther between than people think. Frank Lampard, John Terry, David Beckham had to work their socks off.
“Mason had a Rooney-esque, Gazza-esque quality. In 999 out of 1,000 cases footballers are made, but he fits the born category. It is unexplainable why he can do some of the things he does. He can just score goals from impossible situations.”
Greenwood is now an expectant father, but it remains to be seen whether he will ever grace a football field in England again.
He is clinging to that hope, with a source adding: “He would run through a brick wall to be back playing for United now.”
Luka Modric has reaffirmed his commitment to Real Madrid, despite reports that he is being pursued by Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
The 37-year-old is in his 11th season at Real Madrid, where he has won 22 trophies, but his contract expires at the end of the season.
He has been mentioned as a possible target for Al Nassr, who signed Cristiano Ronaldo on a free transfer from Manchester United in December.
However, when questioned about his future while on international duty with Croatia on Friday, a frustrated Modric stated that his top priority is to reach new terms with Real Madrid.
“My wish is known: to stay at Real Madrid,” he said at a pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Wales. “I believe and hope that it comes true.
“The rest of what’s said is just assumptions and rumours. I repeat the same thing for the hundredth time: I hope and believe that I will stay at Real Madrid.”
Modric, who has previously said he wants to feel as though he has deserved a new deal, also rubbished claims Madrid have asked him to retire from Croatia duty.
“Short and clear – no,” Modric said when that suggestion was put to him.
Tonight, #Croatia held the official practice session at Poljud Stadium in Split. 🏟️
The former Zagreb and Tottenham midfielder is in line to earn his 163rd cap for Croatia when they face Wales in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier in Split.
Having elected not to retire following Croatia’s World Cup semi-final defeat to France, Modric will overtake Drazen Ladic as his country’s oldest ever player.
“I didn’t know that before the conference and I don’t know if it’s good or bad!” Modric said. “I feel great with the national team and I’m glad to be here. I feel happy when I’m here.
“We are all focusing on the Wales game. Hopefully we can get a positive result and take that confidence to Turkey.
“The most important thing is that we win tomorrow. We know we are the favourites and are expected to win, but football is unpredictable and you need to be at 100 per cent.”
Bayern Munich have sensationally sacked Julian Nagelsmann, and Thomas Tuchel is in line to take over.
While not officially confirmed by the German club, widespread reports on Thursday suggested Nagelsmann had been dismissed.
Bayern sit second in the Bundesliga, one point behind Borussia Dortmund, and it is one of their rivals’ former coaches who is favourite to replace Nagelsmann.
TOP STORY – TUCHEL SIGNS BAYERN DEAL
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tuchel – who was sacked by Chelsea in September – has already agreed to become Bayern’s new coach.
Tuchel’s first game would be against his former team Dortmund on April 1.
Bayern face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, is sure to be linked with plenty of high-profile job opportunities.

Victor Osimhen, a striker from Nigeria, has downplayed reports linking him to Premier League clubs, saying it would be disrespectful to Napoli for him to discuss transfers.
When asked to choose between Manchester United and Manchester City by a fan during a Q&A session in Lagos, the Super Eagles player revealed this.
Osimhen has been associated with Manchester United for a while, and many fans have been calling for him to move to Old Trafford.
This is a result of his incredible efforts this season for Napoli, where he has scored 21 goals and is leading the Serie A standings.
According to the video spotted on Twitter, Osimhen explained that he won’t be able to talk again on transfer because he has to respect Napoli. Statement made by Osimhen ”I want to appreciate the person who asked the question, but I don’t want to talk about transfers because it will be so disrespectful to my current club.”
Meanwhile, Osimhen is expected to lead the attack for the Super Eagles in their coming double header against Guinea Bissau.
Okocha wants Osimhen in EPL Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Super Eagles legend, Jay-Jay Okocha showered encomiums on Victor Osimhen, saying he has been impressed with the Nigerian striker’s performances this season. Osimhen is already set to etch his name into the football history books, judging by his brilliant form for Napoli, where he is currently topping the Serie A scoring table with 21 goals this term.
His brilliance in front of the goal has made him a target of many clubs in Europe, who are reportedly preparing to table offers to the Italian club in the summer.
Thanks in part to their lethal striker, Napoli have established a 19-point lead on the Serie A table and are in good position to life the title.
Okocha stated emphatically that Osimhen has shown he has the qualities to excel in the Premier League.
The former Bolton Wanderers midfielder added he would love to see his compatriot feature in the English league for Manchester United or even Manchester City.
Gary Neville is keen for Manchester United to have a new home, telling prospective bidders to modernise the club.
The Glazer family’s tenure in charge at Old Trafford could be nearing a conclusion, having announced in November that they were exploring options for a sale.
Last week saw visits to the club from Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani’s delegation and Jim Ratcliffe, both of whom are the running for a potential takeover – though there could be as many as eight bidders.
Former United captain Neville is keen for whoever takes charge to invest significantly in the club’s infrastructure, including the construction of a new stadium.
“I think we’ve got to make sure that whoever the new owners are in the next few months, that they harness what the club’s history is about, and also take Manchester United forward into a modern era,” he told ITV News.
“You look back at the past in terms of what we are and what we should be, but also I think we need to be a modern football club, with a new stadium, a new infrastructure.
“The training ground needs to be brought up to speed and the sporting project needs to be world class.
“And there needs to be that feeling among the fans again, that everyone’s aligned on the same page – they haven’t had that for the last eight-to-10-years.”
While United are perceived to have fallen behind to their rivals off the field, significant gains have been made under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag.
The Dutch boss guided United to League Cup glory in February, the club’s first trophy since 2017, with further honours up for grabs with the campaign in the FA Cup and Europa League continuing.
Those improvements have impressed Neville, who added: “I think the thing about Manchester United for me is that the football can never be boring.
“You always have to go to a game feeling that you’re going to see something exciting.
“The lads that wear those shirts out on the pitch, they have to look like they’re engaged and they’ve got a spirit and they want to be here.
“You think about how bad it was at the end of last season to what it is now – a huge turnaround.”
Aleksandar Mitrovic looks set for a lengthy ban after the Football Association claimed a “standard punishment” would be “clearly insufficient” after pushing the referee during Fulham’s 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
Mitrovic reacted aggressively after ref Chris Kavanagh awarded United a penalty for Willian preventing a likely Jadon Sancho goal with his hand when the Cottagers were 1-0 up.
Kavanagh was in the process of showing Willian a red card when Mitrovic approached him, with the Serbian shoving the official and getting in his face.
A straight red would ordinarily lead to a three-match ban but it would appear the FA will attempt to suspend him for longer.
Fulham head coach Marco Silva was also sent off while play was paused following Willian’s handball and he could be in line for a significant ban as well.
An FA statement said: “Fulham, Marco Silva and Aleksandar Mitrovic have been charged following the incidents that took place in or around the 72nd minute of their tie against Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday, March 19.
City winning UCL won’t compare to Julia Roberts visiting Man Utd! – Guardiola
“It’s alleged that Silva used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the match referee; that he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official prior to his dismissal; and that he also used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the fourth official after being sent off.
“It’s further alleged that in throwing a water bottle in the direction of the assistant referee his behaviour was improper.
“The FA has claimed that the standard punishment which would otherwise apply to Mitrovic for the sending off offence of violent conduct that he committed towards the match referee is clearly insufficient.
“In addition, Mitrovic’s behaviour and/or language was allegedly improper and/or abusive and/or insulting and/or threatening following his dismissal.
“It’s also alleged that Fulham failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.”
British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe insists he will not pay ” any stupid prices” for Manchester United as the latest bid deadline looms.
Incumbent owners, the Glazer family, tentatively put United up for sale in November and Ratcliffe was the first suitor to formally register an interest through his London-based chemicals company INEOS.
He was subsequently among the parties to submit initial bids ahead of a ‘soft deadline’ in February, with Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani thought to be the two frontrunners.
While the exact value of the bids is unclear, the Glazers are reportedly looking for at least £5.9billion if they are to sell, which would be a new world-record fee for a sports team. The club was valued at £4bn by Forbes last year.
Recent reports suggested the bidders are increasingly confident the Glazers will approve a sale, with Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim expected to submit formal offers this week.
But Ratcliffe has given the clearest indication yet that he will not pay over the odds.
Speaking about the process to the Wall Street Journal, Ratcliffe said: “How do you decide the price of a painting? How do you decide the price of a house?
“It’s not related to how much it cost to build or how much it cost to paint.
“What you don’t want to do is pay stupid prices for things because then you regret it subsequently.”
The second deadline for offers is apparently set for Wednesday, with Sky Sports claiming there could be as many as eight official bids.
Ratcliffe, a life-long United fan, was spotted at Old Trafford last Friday following a meeting with club officials.
Associates of Sheikh Jassim are said to have been in Manchester the day before, though he himself was not in attendance.
In the FA Cup semifinals, Manchester City will play Sheffield United, and Manchester United will play Brighton.
The result of Sunday’s draw puts a Manchester derby in the final squarely on the table.
Although though City enters the match against the Blades as heavy favorites, Pep Guardiola’s team will not be taking anything for granted.
In a 6-0 thumping of Burnley on Saturday, Erling Haaland notched his sixth hat-trick of the year to help City advance to the semi-finals for the fifth consecutive year.
Carabao Cup champions United earned their second trip to Wembley this season after defeating nine-man Fulham 3-1 at Old Trafford.
Sheffield United, meanwhile, scored twice late on to beat fellow Championship side Blackburn 3-2 on Sunday at Bramall Lane.
City loanee Tommy Doyle netted the Blades’ winner in stoppage time but will be unable to feature against his parent club in the last four.
James McAtee is another regular who is on loan from the Premier League champions.
Evan Ferguson became the top-scoring teenager for a Premier League club across all competitions this season (seven) as he netted twice in Brighton’s 5-0 thrashing of Grimsby.
The semi-final ties will be played at Wembley across the weekend of April 22 and 23.

According to Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, Christian Eriksen is expected to make a full recovery from a chronic ankle ailment next month.
During United’s 3-1 EFL Cup victory over Reading on January 28, Eriksen suffered an injury after being on the receiving end of a strong Andy Carroll tackle.
The international player from Denmark had been anticipated to miss the most of the season, with initial expectations for an April or May return.
Ten Hag provided a favorable report on the playmaker who had previously played for Tottenham and Inter and who had been a key component of their comeback in the first half of the season.
“Yes, some point in April, he will be back,” Ten Hag said. “He is doing really well, really good in his rehab.
“The progress is very good and we have to see how that develops in the coming weeks.”
United have a busy upcoming fixture given their commitments across the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League, with nine games scheduled for April.
The Red Devils are currently third in the league in the race to clinch Champions League qualification, holding a three-point lead on fifth-placed Newcastle United.
The 31-year-old had made 29 appearances in all competitions this term for United, netting two goals with nine assists, including seven in the Premier League.
Despite not playing since January, Eriksen is still equal third with Mohamed Salah and Leandro Trossard for most league assists this term, behind Kevin De Bruyne (12) and Bukayo Saka (nine).
Bruno Fernandes (six) has the second-most Premier League assists this term for United, with Casemiro and Marcus Rashford both providing three.
The Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s criticism of the team’s failure to upgrade its facilities has been vindicated by a viral video of Old Trafford restrooms that are overflowed.
Twelve years after his return to the Reds, Ronaldo criticised the club in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan in 2022, saying that “nothing has changed” and that the facilities still needed to be updated.
Prior to Man United’s game against Southampton on Sunday, March 12, 2023, the handle @ste conlon posted a video to Twitter that showed the bathroom area being flooded while the fans detestably walked through to relieve themselves.
“Just arrived at Old Trafford and not for the first time the toilets are overflooded with an inch of urine all over the floor. Disgusting to see. This is what the Glazers don’t want you to see. It’s that bad and has happened so many times I had to video it,” he captioned the video.
The tweet which has gained over 3 million views has seen wild reactions from united fans applauding Ronaldo for calling out the club.
Ronaldo in his interview said: “Nothing changed since I left.”
“The pool, the jacuzzi, even the gym, even some technology. Even the chefs who I appreciate, lovely people. I thought I would see new technology, infrastructure. I saw things I saw when I was 20!”.
The interview which saw Ronaldo criticise the club in plain words fuelled his exit from the club two seasons after his return.
Former player, Jesse Lingard echoed Ronaldo’s concerns during an interview in the Diary of a CEO podcast. “They’re so behind on everything,” he told the Diary of a CEO podcast.
After Manchester United’s Casemiro was sent off in their 0-0 draw with Southampton, David de Gea pleaded for “more consistency” from referees.
After losing to Liverpool 7-0 last week, United was unable to turn things around in the Premier League.
Particularly after Casemiro became the first United player to receive two red cards in the same league season since Nemanja Vidic in 2013–14, they played much of their home game against the bottom-placed team on the back foot.
Anthony Taylor initially booked Casemiro for his challenge on Carlos Alcaraz, but VAR directed the referee to check the pitch-side monitor.
Having looked at replays that showed Casemiro going over the top of the ball and sending his studs high into Alcaraz’s leg, Taylor changed his decision and showed the Brazil midfielder a red.
United claimed a point despite Southampton attempting 17 shots, with De Gea called into action to preserve their clean sheet on several occasions.
Speaking to Sky Sports, De Gea said: “It should be a game to win today, but the game changed when we lost a man in the team.
“We tried our best to score, but it was difficult. They had some chances, but in the end we showed good team spirit. We have to take the point and keep going.
“I think Casemiro was unlucky. He tried to touch the ball and his foot came up high. I think the referees need to show more consistency. Sometimes they show a red card, and sometimes they don’t.”
Casemiro is now set to miss the next four domestic games for United. He will be unavailable for the FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham as well as Premier League clashes with Newcastle United, Brentford and Everton.
“It’s going to be tough, he’s a big player,” De Gea said. “We will miss him for four games, but we have a big squad. We have players coming from the bench who do well. We will keep working hard.”
Erik ten Hag lamented the inconsistent nature of the officials’ rulings after being dissatisfied with Anthony Taylor’s performance in Sunday’s draw between Manchester United and Southampton.
As Casemiro received a straight red card in the first half for an aggressive challenge on Carlos Alcaraz, United could only manage a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
Casemiro was initially given a yellow card by Taylor, but after a VAR review, it was changed to a red, leaving the United midfielder visibly upset because replays showed he won the ball before catching Alcaraz.
It means Casemiro is the first United player to receive two red cards in a single Premier League season since Nemanja Vidic in 2013-14, and he will serve a ban of four matches rather than three due to it being his second dismissal.
The tackle was not too dissimilar to an incident on Saturday when Ricardo Pereira caught Joao Felix with his studs and escaped punishment entirely, and this is the crux of Ten Hag’s frustration, having also seen a couple of penalty appeals fall on deaf ears.
“What I think is the inconsistency; players don’t know anymore what is the policy, and I think it’s all across [every competition],” Ten Hag told reporters.
“We see it with the Premier League yesterday: Leicester-Chelsea, the VAR is not coming online. Today, it’s coming online.
“And then it’s two penalty situations, but they don’t come online. Especially the first one, it was clear and obvious handball, so what is the policy?”
Ten Hag was asked if he sought that clarification from Taylor afterwards, though he was seemingly dissatisfied with the outcome.
“Of course, we talk but not a lot, so some questions we [still] have,” he continued.
“There’s another one: inconsistent. The referee is coming in the start of the season with a policy; we are [in the] Premier League, it’s coming strong here, we want intensity [in the play].”
Ten Hag also feels the slow-motion and freeze-frame nature of VAR reviews does not help because he believes it makes everything look worse than in reality.
“Everyone who knows something about football, and of course, when you freeze it, it looks bad,” Ten Hag said. “But everyone who knows something about football, who was acting on top football, they know what is bad, what isn’t bad and what is fair.
“And I tell you: Casemiro is a really fair player. Tough but fair.
“Casemiro is across European games, over 500 games he never had a [straight] red card. Now he has two.
“Think about that. He plays tough, but he plays fair. And also in this, he’s playing fair, same as against Crystal Palace, so it’s very debatable.
“And if they isolate one [incident] — it’s a little bit the same as against Crystal Palace, definitely.
“When you saw that incident, you should have sent off three or four players and not only one [Casemiro], if you’re really consistent.”
Following a call from Liverpool owner John W Henry for stricter regulations on clubs, Eddie Howe claims that additional spending restrictions would hinder Newcastle’s success plan.
Henry, who had previously backed the defunct European Super League, this week expressed his support for additional restrictions on Premier League clubs in order to maintain healthy competition.
However, Magpies manager Howe, who has made significant purchases since taking over at St James’ Park in November 2021, said he would not appreciate additional restrictions on top of the already-existing rules.
“I wouldn’t want to see any more restrictions on spending,” he said on Friday. “We have spent money, don’t get me wrong, but future restrictions would certainly deny our ability to improve as quickly as we want to.”
Newcastle’s sizeable investment since a Saudi-led takeover in 2021 has enabled them to mount a challenge to finish in the top four of the English top flight this season.
They are currently sixth in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand despite a poor recent run.
Howe’s team also reached last month’s League Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United.
Newcastle, who host Wolves on Sunday, have won just one of their past eight league games and scored only three goals in the process.
“There’s a belief that we can win again and we need, very quickly, to fulfil that aim,” Howe said. “I’ve never sat here and talked us up in terms of targets, top four.
But I have talked us up in terms of what I believe we can achieve and the quality we have in our group and I’m not going to change now.”
Newcastle’s recent lack of goals has increased the clamour for record-signing Alexander Isak to start in place of England international Callum Wilson, who has scored only once in his past 14 appearances for the club.
But Howe issued a note of caution over a player who has missed a significant chunk of the season with a thigh injury.
He said: “He wants to play, like every player. I feel he is there, but is he 100 percent ready to play 90 minutes on a consistent basis? Probably not. I have been delighted by his attitude. I think he’s in a good place.”
Despite ongoing rumors that he might leave Barcelona for Manchester United, Frenkie de Jong has stated he has no plans to do so.
In the off-season, the 25-year-old midfielder was extensively connected with a move to Old Trafford, but it never happened despite United’s Dutch manager Erik ten Hag’s best efforts to persuade him.
De Jong’s contract issue with financially troubled Barcelona made the matter more convoluted and prolonged, stoking rumors that United would make another approach for him at the end of this current campaign.
De Jong, who is under contract at Camp Nou through 2026, has made it clear that he has no intention of leaving.
“I was calm because I knew I wanted to stay at Barca and I haven’t changed my mind,” De Jong told RAC1.
“I had always dreamed of playing for Barcelona and I want to succeed at Barca. Right now I’m calm and I want to continue at Barca.”
De Jong, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, added that he had plenty left to achieve with the Catalans.
“I’ve never won LaLiga,” he said. “It’s my fourth year here and it’s the time I’ve been closer. But there is still a long way to go.
“It is our main goal and we will give everything to achieve it.”
Of the 24 La Liga games Barcelona has played this season, De Jong has made 18 starts and four substitute appearances, ensuring he has played a significant role in their success as they lie nine points in front with 14 games remaining.
“The four-midfielder system benefits me, but beyond that, this year I’m playing more at the base of midfield, where I feel more comfortable,” he said.
“And then, I have more freedom to move, to drive and overcome lines. Busquets helps me a lot because he transmits a lot of calmness. He’s very confident with the ball and defensively he’s much better than people think.”
With a 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 match at Old Trafford, Manchester United got back on track.
An unchanged United team passionately responded a few days after being humiliated by Liverpool to advance to the quarterfinals.
Erik ten Hag’s team did not have it all easy, as Ayoze Perez equalized in the first half after Marcus Rashford had given the home team an early lead.
However, a solid second half gave United the upper hand. Antony guided home a distinctive curler, Bruno Fernandes scored with a goal, and Wout Weghorst added further gloss to the score.
United came out of the blocks flying and having already seen a Weghorst goal disallowed for offside, took the lead in the sixth minute as Rashford capped off a fine counter-attack to smash into the top corner.
Before Betis equalized against the flow of play when Juanmi flicked a pass to Leicester City loanee Perez, who hammered into the far corner and gave David de Gea no chance, Claudio Bravo was called upon to deny Weghorst and Rashford.
The visitors came close to taking the lead two minutes before halftime. De Gea carelessly passed the ball to Juanmi, who then fed a pass to Perez, but United got away with it because Lisandro Martinez deflected Perez’s pass onto the post.
Seven minutes after the break, Antony cut inside onto his left foot and curled the ball past Bravo from outside the box to give United the lead once more.
The hosts’ advantage was doubled just six minutes later, Fernandes finding space at the near post to head Luke Shaw’s corner home despite Bravo getting both hands to the ball.
Bravo kept the scoreline respectable with a number of crucial saves but could do nothing as Weghorst tucked home on the rebound after Scott McTominay’s effort was saved, with United on course for the quarter-finals.
The France international reportedly arrived late for a team meeting on Wednesday and was left off Massimiliano Allegri’s squad when it was announced the morning of the first-leg match of the round of 16 on Thursday.
After returning to Juventus from Manchester United last July, Pogba has had a miserable start to his second stint with the team.
Multiple injuries have plagued the 29-year-old midfielder, who had to wait until February 28 to make his second debut. He came off the bench in the 4-2 derby victory over Torino and also made an appearance as a late substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Roma.
Thursday’s game against Bundesliga club Freiburg had been earmarked as one in which he could make a long-awaited start with Allegri outlining his optimism at the pre-match press conference.
However, widespread reports in Italy have suggested Pogba was late to a team meeting 24 hours before the game with Allegri subsequently opting to leave the player out completely.
In the event that Antonio Conte’s team is eliminated from the Champions League, Manchester United reportedly believes they can lure Harry Kane away from Tottenham.
The prolific England captain, 30, is highly desired by the Red Devils, who are in the market for a star No9.
While United reportedly expects Spurs to lower their £100 million asking price if they do not place in the top four, The Sun reports that the North Londoners are frantically trying not to sell.
Tottenham would run the risk of losing their talisman for nothing if they allowed Kane to complete the remaining 12 months of his contract because his contract expires at the end of the upcoming season.
Conte’s side currently sit in the final Champions League spot but are coming under pressure from Liverpool, who hammered United 7-0 to continue their recent revival on Sunday.
That Anfield humiliation has highlighted the need for improvement at Old Trafford and spending is expected — especially if the Glazer family decide to sell the club.
Saliba has answered all Arsenal’s doubts – Arteta
Kane has 18 league goals this season — the ninth campaign in a row he has hit double figures in the top flight — and would offer a superstar option alongside Marcus Rashford, who is in the form of his life.
He was strongly tipped to move to Manchester City last summer and may see this as his final chance to make a career-defining move as he looks to break his trophy duck.
Napoli sensationVictor Osimhen is another United target but there will be aqueue of clubs fighting for the 24-year-old’s signature.
The Premier League has played host to a number of crazy games through the years.
Fans have witnessed 11 goals in a single match, while some of the best teams in England have been on the wrong end of humiliating results.
When it comes to the most shocking, there is a catalogue of fixtures to consider from Manchester United’s 6-3 loss to Southampton in 1996 to Arsenal beating Tottenham 5-4 at White Hart Lane in 2004.
With the Premier League more competitive than ever, LiveScore have put together the top five most astonishing scorelines.
1. Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal (2011)
Manchester United humiliated Arsenal at Old Trafford in 2011
United have been involved in several high-scoring fixtures in the Premier League era, including this one in August 2011.
After years of tense encounters between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger’s opposing sides, this one turned out to be a thumping — the Gunners slumping to a 8-2 loss.
Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick to take home the match ball, Ashley Young grabbed himself a brace, while Nani, Danny Welbeck and Ji-sung Park were all on target on a bleak day for the visitors — their worst defeat since 1896.
The North Londoners were able to raid the transfer market — including the signing of now-manager Mikel Arteta — to get their season back on track, and went on to secure Champions League qualification.
Meanwhile, the hosts ultimately lost their title to rivals Manchester City on the final day.
2. Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool (2020)
Aston Villa stunned champions Liverpool at Villa Park in 2020
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool came to Villa Park in October 2020 as defending Premier League champions but without a number of key players.
Aston Villa, buoyed by escaping relegation on the last day of the previous season, held no punches as they provided a scintillating attacking display.
Summer signing Ollie Watkins netted a first-half hat-trick, while Jack Grealish was involved in five goals — assisting three and netting two — as Dean Smith’s side completed a remarkable 7-2 win.
The Reds never managed to get their title defence back on course — ending the season in third — while Villa secured a mid-table finish, with star man Grealish earning a big-money move to Man City.
3. Southampton 0-9 Leicester (2019)
Jamie Vardy scored a hat-trick in the 9-0 battering of Southampton
Leicester equalled United’s record for the biggest Premier League victory, when they put nine past 10-man Southampton on a rainy night at St Mary’s in October 2019.
Both Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez recorded hat-tricks, with Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison all adding to the Saints’ woes.
Despite the loss, Ralph Hasenhuttl kept his job on the South Coast and even survived another 9-0 defeat at Old Trafford the following season.
Vardy meanwhile ended the season as the league’s top scorer, firing the Foxes to Europa League qualification.
4. Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United (2023)
Manchester United shipped seven at old foes Liverpool
United’s 6-1 humbling to rivals City in 2011 will live long in the memory but Liverpool scoring six second-half goals to earn a historic win comes out on top.
Jurgen Klopp’s position as Kop chief had come into focus after a poor campaign, while Erik ten hag’s stock was on the rise.
But the Reds cast aside their struggles with an emphatic demolition that included braces from all of their new-look front three as Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez feasted on inept defending.
Roberto Firmino was also on target in a win that all-but ended talk of a United title charge and reminded Liverpool’s rivals that they are more than capable of dishing out a beating.
5. Portsmouth 7-4 Reading (2007)
Portsmouth emerged victorious from the highest-scoring Premier League fixture
While other games selected in this list had great drama, none contained as many goals as this encounter at Fratton Park in September 2007.
Portsmouth and Reading played out an enthralling 11-goal thriller, with Benjani’s hat-trick the highlight of a topsy-turvy affair.
Six goals were scored in the final 20 minutes, with nine different players finding the back of the net.
The result proved detrimental for Reading, who went down that season, while Pompey finished a memorable campaign by lifting the FA Cup.
The 7-0 loss to Liverpool for Manchester United, according to David de Gea, was “a disastrous moment,” but he promises that they will turn things around out of loyalty to the club.
In their Premier League match at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s hosts ran riot, handing Erik ten Hag’s team its joint-heaviest defeat in history.
Such a defeat was in stark contrast to the strides United had made this season, which included winning the EFL Cup final, which broke their six-year trophy drought.
De Gea promised fans on Twitter that he and his teammates will reply because he was all too aware of the significance of the outcome.
“I know these messages don’t sit well on such a day,” he wrote.
“This was a disastrous moment for us and these results shouldn’t happen, especially with the journey we are all on.
“We have a duty to this club, a responsibility to represent the badge, but we have many opportunities to look ahead.
“[We have] many games coming fast, and we have to lock our focus on these.”
Having played a key role at Wembley last month, De Gea turned in one of his roughest performances of the season, saving just one of eight attempts on target throughout.
Braces for Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, plus a Roberto Firmino finish, helped Liverpool extend their winning run over United.
The latter will look to promptly bounce back with the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie against Real Sociedad to come on Wednesday.
There will be much more than civic pride at stake when Liverpool host Manchester United in the 180th league meeting between the North West rivals at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp’s side need to push up the table in pursuit of a top-four finish and establish some momentum ahead of a seemingly-impossible quest to overturn a three-goal deficit to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu Stadium later this month.
United can ill afford to lose any of their forward thrust as Erik ten Hag’s men chase silverware in four competitions, albeit a title challenge still looks a long way off at the moment.
The Red Devils can complete a rare Premier League double over their hosts if they win but Anfield has not been a happy hunting ground for them since the early days of Klopp’s reign.
Team news
Thiago Alcantara (hip), Luis Diaz (knee) and Calvin Ramsay (knee) remain sidelined, while the Reds will need to make a late call on Naby Keita after he sat out the midweek win over Wolves with a knock.
Diogo Jota impressed on Wednesday against his former club but it may be unrealistic to expect him to start a third game in a week after so long on the injury list.
Therefore, Cody Gakpo is expected to return to the starting XI alongside Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah up front, while Andrew Robertson and Jordan Henderson will probably be restored to the side in place of Kostas Tsimikas and Harvey Elliott.
For United, Christian Eriksen (ankle) and Donny van de Beek (knee) are still out, but Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho are expected to return to contention after missing Wednesday’s win over West Ham.
Ten Hag revealed that Shaw sustained a minor injury at Wembley and Sancho had been suffering with a bout of illness.
The Dutchman named a second-string starting line-up against the Hammers, making six changes to Sunday’s Carabao Cup-winning team with the likes of Casemiro, Fred, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford beginning the tie on the bench.
That quartet, plus Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, look likely to return to the team that walks out into the heat of battle at Anfield and there is a small chance Anthony Martial could be available off the bench following a hip injury.
The stats
Erik ten Hag’s men have fallen behind in four of their last seven matches but have been finishing games strongly
Liverpool recorded their fourth Premier League clean sheet in a row on Wednesday against Wolves — the first time they have managed that this season.
Salah needs one more goal to equal Robbie Fowler’s club-record tally of 128 goals for the Reds.
The Egyptian is already Liverpool’s all-time highest goalscorer against United in all competitions with 10 goals.
Nine of those efforts have come in his past five appearances in the fixture.
Meanwhile, since the start of the 2017-18 season, no player has scored more goals against Liverpool than Rashford (six), although none of them were at Anfield.
United have now won 30 times in all competitions this season from 41 games. Only in the 2006-07 and 2012-13 seasons have the Old Trafford club achieved 30 wins in fewer games (40 both times).
But slow starts continue to be a problem for Ten Hag’s team as they have now fallen behind in four of their last seven games, including three of the last four at home.
Prediction
Liverpool restated their claim to finish in the top four with a solid showing at home to Wolves on Wednesday for their eighth home Premier League win of the season.
Klopp’s team look much more like their old selves on familiar turf and will command plenty of respect from a United side that have not been anywhere near as convincing on the road as they have been at Old Trafford.
Liverpool have been ahead at the break in four of their last seven home league games and should come flying out of the blocks again when faced by their bitter North West rivals.
It may be worthwhile taking the 25/1 on offer with LiveScore Bet for United to mount a stirring second-half comeback in the Half Time / Full Time market.
The Carabao Cup winners come on strong at the close and currently boast the Premier League’s best goal return in the final quarter-hour of games, while Liverpool’s most productive 15-minute spell is usually just before half-time.
One of Europe’s top wingers, Bukayo Saka, is a young player under Mikel Arteta who is trying to help Arsenal win the Premier League for the first time since the 2004 Invincibles. The Nigerian-born Saka’s career hit rock bottom in 2021 when he missed England’s fifth penalty attempt in the Gli Azzurri’s victory over England in the postponed Euro 2020 final.
Along with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho of Manchester United, he also faced racist taunts. Unexpectedly, a young fan who wrote Saka a letter and included some pocket money offered him comfort.
Saka meets young fan who gave him his pocket money
As revealed in an episode of Arsenal’s All or Nothing documentary on Amazon Prime Sport, the 21-year-old met the boy named Teddy, who was invited to Emirates Stadium.

Saka showed up in the dressing room, where the boy was already dressed in an Arsenal kit and asked what flavour of ice cream he wanted in reference to his request in the letter, and he responded with strawberry flavour.
When asked why he wrote the letter, the kid responded heartwarmingly and correctly pronounced the name Saka like the Yoruba people of South Western Nigeria, where Saka’s parents originated. ”Because people were being racist to Saka. Bullying him,” he said.
Arsenal target and AC Milan forward Rafael Leao has raised the excitement of the Gunners after he commented on Saka and Teddy’s video on Twitter.
According to former Red Devils full-back Gary Neville, Harry Kane should transfer from Tottenham to Manchester United if he wants to win trophies in his career.
Although being frequently linked with moves away over the years, including most notably in 2021 when he appeared to be pushing for a move to Manchester City before deciding to stay in North London, England captain Kane has spent his whole career with Tottenham.
The 29-year-old is having another another excellent season with Spurs, who were eliminated from the FA Cup on Wednesday by Sheffield United. He has scored 18 goals in 25 Premier League appearances.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Neville suggested Kane could look to move on at the end of the campaign and believes his former club are a realistic destination for the striker.
He said: ” Kane is going to want to win trophies, I think.
“It’s whether he sees it as being a case whereby he commits to Tottenham for his last five years and he does what some players have done.
“But if Harry is going to leave, I think now is the moment.
“He is a wonderful player, he’s a great professional, and I think if Kane could leave now, and you could get him an exit out of there to a club in Manchester probably, United or City, I think he would take that opportunity.
“It’s more than likely not going to be City because of their [Erling] Haaland expenditure and what they’ve done with him, but Manchester United are desperate for a centre forward.
“Chelsea, I can’t see him going there. He’s quite loyal to Tottenham and there’s a big rivalry with Chelsea, so I don’t see that happening, even though they do need a centre forward.
“He’s not going to go to Arsenal, because of the rivalry, so Manchester United is the only option in England for Kane this summer.
“Bayern Munich have been mentioned. That could happen and I think Daniel Levy would be happier if he was to go internationally, so we could see that.
“But I think Harry, if he wants to win trophies, is going to have to leave Tottenham, because Tottenham do struggle with that aspect.”
Neville also queried the idea of United signing Declan Rice, who was a part of the West Ham team that lost 3-1 to the Red Devils in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday.
Neville added: “Obviously, Declan knows the position, but when I look at world-class holding midfielders, and players of that type, because Rice doesn’t score or assist enough goals, so you’re putting him into that category of more of a destroyer.
“You’ve then got to be someone who I think is highly competent on the ball and linking play, and having that knowledge of the subtleties of getting on the ball from the back four.
“I personally feel, at this moment in time, that Declan needs to go and work under a different set-up, he needs to drive forward in his career, he needs to go and play at a different club.
“But for me, I wouldn’t be spending £110million or £120m on Rice if I was Manchester United this summer.
“I would spend £50m-60m on him but I wouldn’t spend the figures being reported because I still feel like he’s got a lot of growth.”
