    I didn’t choose my father’s burial date; Otumfuo did – Adwoa Safo clarifies

    Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has emphasised that Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, approved the date for her late father, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka’s, funeral.

    Speaking to the media, she disclosed that the Manhyia Palace played a major role in the arrangements for the burial due to her father’s ties to the royal family.

    According to her, the funeral arrangements for Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka will begin on Friday, July 31, at Independence Square and will continue on August 8 with a thanksgiving service at Asante Mampong in Kumasi.

    “On the 30th of July, we will go to Gomoa Mpota to bury my late father. On the 31st of July, we will be at Independence Square to hold the funeral service. Then, on the 8th of August, we will travel to Asante Mampong in Kumasi for the thanksgiving service. So everyone should disregard the rumours that the funeral will not take place or that it has been cancelled.

    “My father is from a royal background from the Ashanti Region, and so for a royal of his calibre, we couldn’t have done anything without consulting the King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” she said.

    The clarification comes a day after some Kantanka family members, led by Nana Akofena Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, Head of the Kantanka Family and Leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana (KAMOG), urged the public to disregard the reported July 30th as the funeral and burial arrangements of Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

    Addressing the media in a press conference in Accra on Monday, July 27, at the Kristo Asafo Mission headquarters in Achimota, Accra, Nana Akofena stressed that until the dispute over his father’s will is resolved, there will be no burial.

    He said, “Whatever is going on and the date that has been announced for my dad’s funeral, I urge the nation and the members of Kristo Asafo to disregard it. Because the Asante Kotoko family has not announced any date for my dad’s funeral, you see my uncles here, the clan head, and behind me are seated members of the church, the council of elders and some members of the church; regional council members are all here, and we say no date has been announced for my dad’s funeral,” he said in Twi.

    According to him, “Despite numerous interventions and goodwill efforts, the desired reconciliation has not been achieved”.

    He explained that the family remains divided over aspects of the funeral arrangements, alleging that some provisions contained in the late Apostle’s will, particularly those relating to the custody of his remains, have not been respected.

    Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena said the family has therefore instructed its legal representatives to take steps to ensure that the wishes expressed in the late Apostle’s will are upheld.

    “Our family has instructed our solicitors to commence the necessary legal proceedings to ensure that the wishes expressed in our late father’s will are given full legal effect,” he said.

    Responding to her brother’s remarks on the funeral date, Sarah Adwoa Safo, speaking during media interviews in Accra, notably on Angel FM and Angel TV, stated that the funeral of Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka would proceed on Thursday, July 30, at Gomoa Mpota, followed by the Independence Square service on July 31 and thanksgiving in Kumasi on August 8.

    “I am stating categorically that on the 30th, we are going to Gomoa to bury my late father. On the 31st of July, we will come to the Independence Square to hold the funeral service.

    “It is not the behaviour my brother is putting up that will make me not give my dad a befitting burial,” she stressed.

    Chieftaincy, land disputes are for me to handle, focus on crimes – Otumfuo to Ashanti Police Commander

    King of the Asante kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has welcomed the new Ashanti Regional Police Commander, charging him to stay within his jurisdiction and stay away from matters that fall under his authority, including chieftaincy and land disputes.

    Commissioner of Police (COP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, who occupied the position as the Regional Police Commander, has received a promotion following a reshuffle that was carried out in October at the order of the Inspector General of Police.

    Taking his place is DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, who paid a courtesy call at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, November 5. During his visit to the Palace yesterday, the Asantehene charged him to remain within his jurisdiction, avoid interference in land and chieftaincy disputes, and resist intimidation from individuals who might misuse the King’s name.

    “I’m sure by now, your predecessor has briefed you about your jurisdiction. Ultimately, peace is what we all seek. In the Ashanti Kingdom, matters relating to land and chieftaincy disputes fall under my authority, not that of the police. If anyone, including a chief, brings such a case to you, simply tell them, ‘Hold on, let me consult the Asantehene. Whatever the case may be, once it reaches my attention, peace shall prevail. If anyone attempts to act arrogantly or remains unyielding, especially in land cases, report it to me; those issues are not part of your mandate”, he noted.

    He continued, “However, cases involving theft, robbery, and other social vices fall within your responsibility. Handle them diligently and ensure that peace is maintained throughout our region and kingdom.”

    The 1992 Constitution of Ghana affirms that all stool, skin, and family lands are vested in the appropriate stool or skin on behalf of, and in trust for, the subjects of that stool or skin. This gives chiefs a legally recognised role as custodians.

    This means that chiefs and other traditional authorities hold land in trust for their people. They cannot treat stool or skin lands as private property.

    Asantehene, since his enthronement in 1999, has been the primary arbiter of land conflicts in Asanteman 1999, handling countless cases through traditional structures and reinforcing his authority by warning chiefs against illegal practices like using land guards.

    During the new Commander’s visit to the Manhyia Palace, he reiterated his commitment to nipping in the bud the resurgence of land guards, warning dethronement for chiefs who employ the services of landguards.

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II fumed at the actions of these land guards, adding that such conduct was against the traditional governance system of Asanteman.

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II further called on individuals or chiefs involved in land disputes to seek amicable resolution through proper channels rather than resorting to violence or unauthorised security arrangements.

    “I will destool any chief who engages the services of land guards. They know very well that they have no such authority. When those lands were entrusted to them upon their enstoolment, I never instructed them to hire land guards to protect them. I did not grant them the power to employ people to use guns and harm others.

    “If you have any land disputes with anyone, bring it before me, and we will resolve it amicably, for peace to prevail,” the Asantehene said.

    In July, the Asantehene issued a similar warning, declaring his readiness to destool any chief found harbouring or condoning the illegal activities of land guards within their jurisdictions. The Asantehene’s declaration came during the first Asanteman Council meeting following the culmination of the Silver Jubilee celebrations at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

    Asantehene has built a reputation over the years as a credible arbiter, making him a good candidate to be a part of the mediation team to help resolve the long-standing conflict in Bawku.

    During President John Dramani Mahama’s first administration, he named Otumfuo to play a mediating role in the Bawku conflict.

    He began the mediation around 2013, but the process was stalled due to the renewed violence and difficulties in securing cooperation from the feuding factions, and the need to reorganise the peace framework.

    Mediation efforts began in 2023, but by 2024, the process was paused. During this period, Otumfuo emphasised that he would only continue if both sides were committed to dialogue. In April 2025, Otumfuo resumed mediation at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku region.

    Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a distinguished security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

    Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of various national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

    He believes that a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

    “Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

    He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone might not be enough to resolve the deep divisions that have fueled the protracted conflict.

    Marathon singer Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum paid a visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace during the first Awukudae celebration of the year on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

    The visit was to thank the Asantehene for his support and warm reception during her second attempt at a Guinness World Record in December, held at the Baba Yara Stadium.

    Otumfuo praised Asantewaa for her courage and determination, commending her efforts to showcase Ghana on the global stage through her music.

    Asantewaa visited the Manhyia Palace with a team that included Kwame Adinkra, Kofi Owusu Aduonum, Gladys Owiredu, Isaac Amponsah, and Asare Daniel.

    In line with the cultural significance of the celebration, Manhyia Palace has set clear guidelines for the event. Lawrence Prempeh stressed that the occasion is strictly non-political, and attendees are asked not to wear political party attire.

    Guests are also expected to dress appropriately and honour the solemnity of the event.

    King Prempeh I, or Nana Agyeman Prempeh I, was exiled to Seychelles by the British colonial authorities in 1896. His return to the Ashanti Kingdom in 1924 was a powerful symbol of the resilience and spirit of the Ashanti people.

    This weekend’s commemoration, led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is dedicated to honoring that enduring legacy and celebrating the deep-rooted traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom.

    Manhyia Palace has refused to accept the apology rendered by Agoo TV journalist Afia Pokua and host of Onua TV’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye Wo,’ Mona Gucci for comments perceived as disrespectful to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asanteman.

    Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci, appeared before Manhyia on Monday, September 23, to issue their formal apologies. In a widely circulated video, Afia Pokuaa was observed kneeling before several Asante chiefs.

    However, the authorities at Manhyia Palace declined their apology

    “We don’t need anything from this child over here. She should take her sins away,” a chief said.

    The controversy began when Afia Pokua criticized the Asantehene for what she viewed as his silence during ongoing conflicts involving his subjects and other tribes, including the Bonos on Mona Gucci’s show.

    Afia Pokua had voiced her frustrations regarding what she perceived as the Ashantis’ superiority over other tribes,

    Her remarks sparked considerable outrage within the Ashanti community, leading to public condemnation and backlash from community leaders, including sub-chiefs and queen mothers.

    Realizing the gravity of their remarks, both journalists turned to social media to express their remorse but recognized the importance of a more direct apology.

    In a live broadcast, Mona Gucci admitted her regret for permitting Afia Pokua to air such controversial opinions.

    “When my guest came on the show, she made statements that hurt many. We are using this same platform to apologise. To our viewers around the world, including the Ashantis, we are truly sorry. We acknowledge your pain and concerns regarding this issue. I, Monalisa Abigail Sefakor Semeha, plead for your forgiveness. I apologise for everything that has transpired. 

    “The Asantehene is our father, and Asanteman is our family. Please forgive us,” Mona Gucci said. 

    Visibly emotional, Afia Pokua offered a lengthy apology to the Asantehene and the entire Ashanti kingdom, both locally and internationally. Dressed in funeral attire and on the verge of tears, she bowed deeply as she conveyed her sincere regret.

    She extended her apologies further, recognizing the embarrassment her comments caused the Kwahumanhene and the people of Kwahu.

    “I also apologise to the Kwahumanhene. I have brought shame upon you. My words have embarrassed the Chief and the people of Kwahu. Please forgive me; I promise not to let this happen again, “she added.

    “I offer a sincere apology to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. I did not speak well at all, and I accept my wrongs. I am his grandchild, child, and niece. I bow and ask for his forgiveness. 

    “I also apologise to the entire Asanteman, both home and abroad. Please forgive me. My actions were not intentional; I ask that, despite your anger, you find it in your heart to forgive me. I erred; I goofed,”  Afia Pokua said.

    The announcement was held at Kumasi Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the party.

    Manhyia Palace Museum worker, Justice, provided insights into a vintage appliance as part of the V3 report commemorating the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s reign as Asantehene.

    He revealed that the refrigerator, which was acquired 74 years ago, has never undergone any maintenance or repairs.

    Remarkably, it has never had its motor replaced or its refrigerant gas refilled.

    “This fridge, 74 years this year, still works. We have never changed the motor; we have never filled the gas. As it was in 1950, so it is today,” he said.

    “I am telling you; this fridge is 74 years old this year. We haven’t changed the motor since then, we haven’t filled the gas,” he added.

    The TV3 presenter inspected the fridge and found it in perfect working condition, with ice still forming inside when turned on.

    On Sunday, May 12, the Manhyia Palace has announced the closure of all roads leading to the palace.

    In an official statement released on May 11, the Palace specified that only vehicles displaying appropriate stickers will be permitted to access these roads.

    “This is to give dignitaries attending the Adae Kese easy passage to the Palace,” it added in a statement dated May 11.

    The purpose of this measure, according to the statement, is to facilitate the smooth passage of dignitaries attending the Adae Kese to the Palace.

    Furthermore, the Palace emphasized that tricycles, commonly known as pragia and aboboyaa, are prohibited from the vicinity of the Manhyia Palace on Sunday.

    Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II was born on May 6, 1950.

    He ascended to the Golden Stool, becoming the 16th Asantehene, on April 26, 1999.

    He has, so far, spent 25 years on the throne.

    The 74th birthday of Otumfuo coincides with the year-long commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the Golden Stool.

    The event, titled ‘Feast Ghana in Asanteman,’ highlighted the diverse culinary treasures of the Ashanti culture, featuring an assortment of dishes from various paramountcies.

    Before the exhibition, the queen mothers were actively engaged in cooking and setting up tables, creating an atmosphere of anticipation that resonated with cheers from the audience.

    Alongside their cooked delicacies, they showcased fresh local produce, offering attendees insights into the farm-to-table journey and imparting comprehensive knowledge about food culture.

    Adorned in vibrant costumes, the queen mothers welcomed Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who toured the exhibition, admiring their presentations and engaging in discussions about the dishes.

    The menu ranged from ampesi, etor, fufuo, ebubu bunu, mportor mportor, to other intriguing indigenous foods, reflecting the depth of Asante gastronomy.

    Noteworthy participants included the Mampong hemaa, Adansi hemaa, Ejisu hemaa, Yamfo hemaa, Agona hemaa, Ahafo Kenyasi hemaa, Tepa hemaa, Agogo hemaa, Tafo hemaa, among others, each contributing to the culinary extravaganza.

    Adding a touch of contemporary flair was Ghanaian musician Lousika, crowned queen mother of Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region in 2023, who also joined the festivities.

    Representative at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Poku Bra, has confirmed that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has generously donated five million dollars to the ‘Heal the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’ initiative.

    The revelation came during a discussion with Omanhene Adu Boakye of Sompa FM, who sought clarification on the matter from palace representatives.

    The conversation about Otumfuo’s donation arose while discussing plans for the celebration of the Asantehene’s 25th year of reign.

    The host of Sompa FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ show said, “We are told that the Asantehene donated 5 million dollars. 5million dollars!”

    Nana Poku Bra responded, “Yes his personal support.”

    Intrigued by the confirmation, Omanhene Adu Boakye continued, “Do you know the worth of one million dollars in cedis? It’s 130 billion Ghana cedis. So, multiply this by five.”

    The host continued by addressing individuals who have criticised the Asantehene for seeking funds to renovate the hospital instead of fully financing it himself.

    He argued that no traditional leader in Ghana has the capacity to single-handedly fund such a large-scale project. He emphasised that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is fulfilling his role as a respected leader by seeking contributions to support the initiative.

    “If a king of this calibre is talking, then people are criticising him. How many people can donate this amount? Which kingdom in Ghana? Then some clueless people will be claiming that the Asantehene is begging for funds to establish the project,” he stated

    The Manhyia rep, who concurred with Omanhene’s statement added, “Otumfuo is capable of building that hospital alone. It’s just a nice thing to see others support.”

    Head of the Public Affairs Department,Kwame Frimpong, revealed that the hospital has raised half of the estimated $10 million required for the renovation project.

    He emphasized that the appeal for support made by the Asantehene to renovate the 70-year-old Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has been effective, with both individuals and corporate entities continuing to contribute to the cause. Mr. Frimpong made this disclosure following a donation of 300,000 Ghana cedis by the private institution OFI Ghana to support the initiative.

    Ashanti overlord Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has declared that he has restored the spirit and soul of Ashanti by receiving artefacts looted from Kumasi approximately 150 years ago at the Manhyia Palace.

    Seven golden artefacts, taken from Kumasi in 1874, were traced to the Fowler Museum in California, United States.

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II successfully secured the artefacts after numerous unsuccessful attempts by his predecessors, including Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II.

    A durbar of chiefs was organized at the Manhyia Palace to unveil the artefacts and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War, which occurred in 1874.

    This event marks the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ascension to the Golden Stool.

    “When we came here, Otumfuo, His Royal Majesty and I will quote him. He said that he has been able to return our (Asante) soul to its original place. “

    “The items are still items that have spiritual relevance to us. They are still active; they  would be activated and they would be used.”

    Professor Kwasi Ampene of the Department of Music at Tufts University in Massachusetts, United States, facilitated the return of the artefacts.

    In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Professor Ampene stated that the Asantehene is delighted with the return of the pure gold artefacts, considering them a restoration of the Asante soul to its original place.

    According to Professor Ampene, a member of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences who extensively studied Asante culture, the items hold spiritual significance for the Asante Kingdom and will be actively used.

    The artefacts include Asipim chairs made of silver, Sika Amena necklaces, armbands, and anklets – all crafted from pure gold.

    Another set of artefacts is expected from the British Museum in April this year and will be unveiled on May 12, 2024, during the Akwasidae Festival celebrations.

    Professor Ampene commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for initiating the return and acknowledged Opemsuo Osei Tutu Ababio for his efforts in empowering the facilitation process.

    Ivor Agyemang Duah, the Technical Advisor to the project, informed Joy News that the artefacts will be accessible to the general public at the Manhyia Palace Museum once the museum undergoes rehabilitation.

    Lawyer and TV show host of ‘Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem’ on Wontumi TV, Maurice Ampaw, has ignored the summons of the Kumasi Traditional Council, following his ‘disrespectful’ comments about the head of the Ashanti Kingdom, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

    A few days after reports of Chairman Wontumi’s derogatory remarks about Otumfuo surfaced, Maurice Ampaw was reported to have slammed the Ashanti overload for his alleged meddling in the affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    According to him, the Asantehene was not above the laws of the country.

    These comments didn’t sit well with the traditional leaders of the Ashanti kingdom; hence, during a visit to Manhyia on January 23, 2024, by a delegation led by the NPP’s general secretary, Justin Koduah, the elders demanded the presence of both Chairman Wontumi, Maurice Ampaw and the entire management of the Wontumi Media.

    “When you come to Asanteman, we have only one head, and that is the Asantehene, so if you disrespect him, we wouldn’t let you go scot-free. So advise your members, ministers and all others to watch themselves when it comes to Asanteman.

    So, General Secretary, go and advise Wontumi, at the latest by Monday, that no matter what, he should appear before us here, and when he is coming, he should come with Maurice Ampaw and the entire management of Wontumi.

    And also, they should come and explain why Maurice Ampaw is just slamming the Asantehene and his entourage and why Wontumi’s media house has given him that platform to say all the things he says on his show,” one of the elders told the NPP delegates.

    Wontumi honoured the invitation after his recovery from his reported illness today, January 29, 2024 but Maurice Ampaw was missing.

    Ahead of Wontumi’s appearance before the Traditional Council , the lawyer and TV host mentioned that he will not honour the invitation of the elders, saying that he felt insulted and prejudged by some of the chiefs; hence, he will not step a foot at the Manhyia Palace.

    Also, he believes he said nothing disrespectful or disrespected Otumfuo in any way but only expressed his opinion as a citizen.

    While the Asanteman Council has received Chairman Wontumi and the delegation, an ongoing secret meeting is being held by the traditional council before engaging with them.

    Background:

    Chairman Wontumi has been declared wanted by the Asanteman Traditional Council, the second-highest decision-making body of the Asante Kingdom. This action was taken after he made comments during the vetting of parliamentary aspirants in the Ashanti Region that were perceived as challenging the authority of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

    Chairman Wontumi, along with private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw, was supposed to appear before the Kumasi Traditional Council on Monday, January 29, 2024. However, Maurice Ampaw has indicated his unpreparedness to appear before the Council.

    Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, has stirred more controversy by defying a summons by the Kumasi Traditional Council over some alleged derogatory comments he made against its members.

    In an interview with Kasapa FM, Ampaw raised questions about the motive behind a potential invitation to the Kumasi Traditional Council, asking, “What you say I have said, are you inviting me so you can listen to me? Or you are inviting me so you can kill me?” He went on to emphasize the supremacy of the constitution, stating, “The constitution is bigger than anybody. Otumfuo is subject to the constitution of the Republic of Ghana. Everybody, including the President.”

    Ampaw, defending his reputation, highlighted his extensive legal experience and ethical standing. “A lawyer of 25 years. High moral character proven integrity. I do not have any misconduct. I am competent enough. I educated the whole Ghana, 2012 – 2013,” he asserted. Ampaw also shared his past collaboration with Otumfuo, recalling an assignment given to him by the Asantehene in 2013, which he executed satisfactorily.

    Expressing frustration with recent allegations, Ampaw addressed the perceived prejudice against him, saying, “Today a chief is telling me I am a gutter…(trailed off). I haven’t even come there yet, and you are already prejudiced against me, you have judged me already, and have insulted me such that it is already on social media.”

    As tensions escalate, Ampaw expressed concern about potential mistreatment, saying, “They are only going to bully me when I go. You are saying I am a bad lawyer, so what am I going to do there? Someone who is bad? Otumfuo is not around. I am sad. The Asantehene will never behave this way. Yes, I am telling you.”

    Reports have emerged contradicting earlier claims that the Manhyia Palace has dismissed media assertions indicating the withdrawal of summonses for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, to appear before the Kumasi Traditional Council.

    The media had suggested that the Asantehene ordered the council to cease discussions on alleged disrespectful actions by Chairman Wontumi towards the occupant of the golden stool.

    Previously, Nana Kofi Owusu, the Chief Linguist of Otumfuo, had directed the NPP, led by Justin Frimpong Kodua, during a meeting on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace, to present Chairman Wontumi before the Asanteman Council within a week.

    Despite potential health concerns, Wontumi was urged to respond to alleged derogatory comments about Asanteman.

    Contrary to circulating reports claiming a directive from the Asantehene instructing the Kumasi Traditional Council to suspend Chairman Wontumi’s case, sources from the palace, as reported by JoyNews, have refuted such assertions.

    According to these sources, no such directive has been issued by the Asantehene.

    In anticipation of complying with a summons from the Kumasi Traditional Council regarding a contentious broadcast, the leadership of Wontumi Multimedia has extended a sincere apology to traditional authorities in the Ashanti Region.

    The apology pertains to the recent behavior of lawyer Maurice Ampaw during an episode of his Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem program aired on Wontumi TV.

    In an official statement signed by the General Manager of the media organization, the management condemned Maurice Ampaw’s remarks, characterizing them as disorderly and wholly unacceptable.

    “The Management of Wontumi Multimedia wishes to render its unqualified and unreserved apology to the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) and Nananom for the unruly behaviour exhibited by one of our hosts at Wontumi Television by name Lawyer Maurice Ampaw.

    “Management understands the importance of upholding respect and dignity, especially when it comes to matters involving customs and traditions, as well as esteemed figures like yourselves.

    “We recognize that the conduct displayed by Lawyer Maurice Ampaw through our medium Wontumi Television, was completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values and standards of our organization,” the statement said.

    The management stated that it had ordered the program to be suspended indefinitely until the issue was resolved, even though it acknowledged that actions were being taken to correct the situation.

    “We must bring to the notice of our respected Nananom that management had no foreknowledge of the content of the programme on the said night, neither does it control over the minute details of the programme. Lawyer Maurice Ampaw unilaterally produced his show and determined issues to be discussed.

    “Notwithstanding that, management does not intend to absorb itself of any blame and therefore accept full responsibility for any mishap,” the statement added.

    The Kumasi Traditional Council recently issued a summons to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman and owner of Wontumi Multimedia. The summons was in response to reports of his alleged challenge to the authority of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during a party event.

    During his appearance before the Council last week, the leadership of the NPP, led by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah, requested time for Wontumi to make his appearance, citing health reasons. However, the Council rejected this justification and ordered the party to produce Wontumi within seven days.

    Additionally, the Council demanded the presence of Maurice Ampaw and the management of Wontumi Media regarding the lawyer’s statements on the matter involving their owner.

    Private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has committed to attending the summons by the Manhyia Palace on Monday, January 29.

    The lawyer was summoned in response to his earlier outburst, where he made derogatory remarks about some chiefs in the Ashanti region.

    “We are going to talk law and no one is above the law. The chiefs could have just summoned me directly without going through Manhyia. Even if I decide not to work here in Kumasi, I can still fire from Accra.

    I will honour the invitation, and you will clap for Lawyer Ampaw on Monday. I am going with the truth. Otumfuo supports the truth and I am going to lay bare the facts,” lawyer Ampaw told Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on GhanAkoma.

    On Monday, the General Secretary of the ruling NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, appeared before the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace to respond to alleged unsavoury comments allegedly passed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman during a vetting process.

    Lawyer Ampaw was also invited for a derogatory remark passed about chiefs in Ashant, a video of which has since gone viral. He alleged in the video that “some chiefs in the Ashanti Region are corrupt.”

    He stressed that he has respect for the Manhyia Palace so he will make it a point to honour the invitation.

    “Everything that I have said will be subjected to strict proof. I will not say I am sick. I am not sick. I will be there. I am going there happily, because I will explain everything to them. It’s been a while since I went there. I will wear white-white. I am ready,” he added.

    It would be recalled that Otumfuo’s Chief Linguist, Nana Kofi Owusu, told the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Justin Frimpong Kodua, that they should bring before the Asanteman Council the Regional Chairman of the Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Wontumi, within one week.

    The order was given at a meeting held on January 22 at the Manhyia Palace.

    “Wontumi should be produced here by next week, even if he is on a sick bed,” he told the NPP delegation.

    Wontumi has been summoned to appear before the Asantehene for allegedly making unfavourable comments about Asanteman.

    The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, accompanied by the national organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and several regional executives of the party, appeared before the Asanteman Council to plead on behalf of the Regional Chairman.

    However, conspicuously missing was Bernard Antwi Boasiako. Mr Kodua told the chiefs that Wontumi was indisposed “Nananom, we could not come with Chairman Wontumi because he has not been well.”

    But the excuse did not sit well with some of the chiefs.

    For instance, one of Otumfuo’s chief linguists, Nana Kwaku Owusu, demanded a medical report on Wontumi. “If you claim Wontumi is sick, where is his doctor’s report?” he queried.

    Mr Frimpong Kodua pleaded for clemency as he was unable to present the doctor’s report requested.

    General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has announced that he is leading a delegation of party officials to the Manhyia Palace in response to the recent brouhaha involving Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

    He made this known while announcing the guidelines ahead of the parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27.

    Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Chairman Wontumi is accused of making derogatory remarks about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

    This is said to have unfolded at the party’s recently held Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Vetting. It is said alleged that Chairman Wontumi had cast aspersions on the Asantehene at the said event.

    But Chairman Wontumi has refuted allegations that he made derogatory remarks about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene. 

    He says that these reports are orchestrated by his opponents, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to create public discontent towards him. 

    As the matter unfolds, Chairman Wontumi has also been accused of cursing the Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Duah, with the ‘Antoa’ deity.

    The situation unfolded when Justin Kodua, concerned about reports of Chairman Wontumi’s alleged attack on Otumfuo, called the Kokosohene to verify the news. During the phone conversation, Justin Kodua added Chairman Wontumi on a conference call to get his input on the controversial issue.

    Unexpectedly, Chairman Wontumi, upon hearing the voice of Kokosohene, became angry and started to curse him. In his alleged curses, Wontumi reportedly invoked the powerful ‘Antoa‘ deity and other river gods, praying for harm to befall the Kokosohene without any apparent provocation.

    The Kokosohene confirmed the incident, stating that Wontumi cursed him, praying for the river deities to strike him dead.

    Meanwhile, Mr Frimpong Kodua has cautioned NPP supporters against making public statements that could be derogatory to the chieftaincy institution.

    A collective of young individuals in the Ashanti Region, has made an appeal to the Manhyia Palace, urging the prohibition of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, from entering the Manhyia Palace.

    In addition to their appeal to the Manhyia Palace, the association has called on paramount chiefs and sub-chiefs aligned with the Golden Stool not to grant Chairman Wontumi access to their palaces. 

    During a news conference in Kumasi on January 17, 2024, the association emphasized that Chairman Wontumi’s assertion of having his own kingdom in Asanteman is offensive, portraying disrespect to the Golden Stool.

    They proposed that the ban could be lifted only if Chairman Wontumi issues an unqualified apology to Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Asanteman.

    Addressing the media, Amaning Kwarteng, the spokesperson for the group, recounted an incident during the vetting of NPP parliamentary aspirants in the Manhyia South Constituency on January 3, 2024. 

    He detailed a confrontation between the constituency organizer, Alhaji Abuba, and Chairman Wontumi. Amid verbal exchanges, Chairman Wontumi allegedly boasted about establishing his own kingdom in the Ashanti Region, complete with a military and police force.

    Despite being advised by Nana Kwaku Duah, the chief of Kokoso and chairman of the NPP Council of Elders in Manhyia South, that no one, except the Asantehene, owns a kingdom in Asanteman, Chairman Wontumi reportedly remained defiant. 

    The youth emphasized the significance of adhering to Asante tradition, asserting that individuals cannot speak their minds to the King as it would lead to disregard and disrespect for the Golden Stool.

    “ The Ashanti Youth wants to make it clear that, per Asante tradition and customs, no individual in the Ashanti Kingdom can speak his mind to the King, since that will lead to disregard and disrespect to the Golden Stool,” Mr Kwarteng stated .

    Additionally, the association expressed disappointment in the National Organizer of the party, Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, for allegedly attempting to shield Chairman Wontumi from accountability for his disrespectful actions.

    Their plea comes after a different group ordered Chairman Wontumi to the palace for his alleged disrespect towards the authority of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

    Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to enact effective measures ensuring the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming 2024 general elections.

    The Asantehene emphasized that Ghana has reached a mature stage, and therefore, it is imperative to implement adequate measures to prevent disruptions that commonly occur during general elections.

    During a courtesy call by the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to the Manhyia Palace as part of his visit to the Ashanti region, the Asantehene made the statement.

    “I will urge you that this year is an election year. This is not the first time we are voting; we’ve always been voting. I urge you all to put in measures to ensure peace in the upcoming election. You must protect the country. It is your duty, hence, to put in measures for the country to live up to that.”

    He additionally urged the police to implement stringent measures to combat the menace of illegal mining, which has resulted in the degradation of water bodies and forest reserves.

    “Recently, there have been illegal mining cases which have become a challenge. I’ll plead with you all to help put a stop to that. It is affecting our lands and water bodies.

    The IGP, Mr. Damapre also assured the Asantehene to continue his good works to promote peace in the country and indicated some measures that have been put in place to safeguard the security of Ghanaians.

    He also expressed his appreciation to the Asantehene for his enormous support in building the nation.

    On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Nana Dwamena Akenten II, the newly installed paramount chief of the Offinso Traditional Area, pledged allegiance to Sikadwa (the Golden Stool), Asantehene, and Asanteman Council.

    The ceremony, held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, symbolizes the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over the Offinsomanhene and the Offinso Traditional Area.

    Top paramount chiefs of Asanteman, including Sampamanhene, Nana Yaw Sammor-Duah II; Seikwamanhene, Nana Kwaku Dwumah Ankoana II Fiaprahene; Tuabodommanhene, Nana Agyei Kooko Beyeeman; Berekummanhemaa, Nana Akosua Ameyaahene; and Goasomanhene, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah, were present at the event.

    Before swearing the oath to Otumfuo, Nana Dwamena Akenten II was carried in a palanquin through the principal streets of Manhyia, as reported by The Asante Nation on X.

    The process of filling the Offinso Stool gained significant attention after Otumfuo turned down a candidate proposed by Offinsohemaa Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko.

    Following months of deliberation, Nana Amoako Poku, a 68-year-old royal from the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, was nominated and accepted by Otumfuo, leading to the removal of Offinsohemaa.

    This event commemorated the sixth celebration of the year and drew a prominent gathering of dignitaries, including both local and international figures.

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II highlighted Vodafone Ghana’s steadfast support for the Asantehene Open Golf Championship, even amidst challenging economic times. He also recognised the company’s crucial initiatives that have significantly impacted the region, particularly in the realms of education and healthcare.

    This commendation was made during a visit by Vodafone Ghana’s senior management team, led by CEO Patricia Obo-Nai, to the Manhyia Palace.

    The visit was aimed at communicating Vodafone Ghana’s continued sponsorship of the Asantehene Open Golf Tournament, a commitment they have upheld for seven successive years since 2017.

    She also announced the celebration of the 2023 Vodafone Ashanti Month, which is an annual celebration.

    Chief Imam visits Manhyia to commiserate with Asantehene

    The National Chief Imam, His Eminence Usmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, paid a visit to Manhyia palace to express sympathy to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over the death of the Ashanti Regional Zango Chief, Sultan Umar Farouk.

    The late Sultan, who was a close ally of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, died on Thursday, February 23 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after a protracted illness.

    A Muslim delegation led by the National Chief Imam, the President of Tijaniyya Movement in Ghana, Sheikh Abdul Wadud Haroun Ciessey, and Alhaji Abdullah Ali Barry, Zango Development Chief (Nkosuohene) paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.

    “I know the strong ties between you (Asantehene) and the late regional Zango Chief. His death will obviously come as a big blow to you,” the National Chief Imam said through his spokesperson, Sheikh Armeyaw Shuaib.

    “Allah is the one who gives and takes so we just have to thank Allah for a life well lived by the late Sultan Umar Farouk. It is important I come here, in person, to console you. The Muslim community in general has lost a good man.”

    His Eminence Dr Sharubutu prayed for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the entire the Asanteman for good health and sustainable peace.

    The late Ashanti Regional Sarkin Zango, Sultan Umar Farouk, has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

    To honor the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, thousands of people gathered at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi as part of celebrations for the first Akwasidae of the year 2023.

    It was marked with drumming and dancing amidst exchange of greetings, presentation of drinks and other pleasantries.

    Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II entered the Palace in a palanquin dressed in a kente cloth with gold ornaments around his wrists and arms amidst drumming and firing of musketries.

    He was followed by the Queen of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

    The Akwasidae Festival is a magnificent Asante celebration centered on ancestral reverence, remembrance and acknowledgement of past kings and noble feats.

    It serves as a celebration of the Golden Stool and a cultural vibrancy that brings together the Asantehene, sub-chiefs, subjects and dignitaries at Manhyia in Kumasi.

    The atmosphere was charged with a lot of activities, which include drumming and dancing, cultural display and others.

    Sunday, February 5, Elba attending the first Akwasidae of the year 2023, paid homage to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

    With his production team on hand, the actor taped parts of his time at the Akwasidae festival. It is reported the footage will appear in an upcoming film of his.

    The Akwasidae (Sacred Sunday) is celebrated every six weeks at the Manhyia Palace, Kumasi, Ashanti Region. Centred on ancestral veneration, remembrance and acknowledgement of past kings and various noble feats, it begins from the Asantehene’s throne room and is attended by large crowds in traditional clothing like the royal kente.

    Friday, February 3, Idris and his team paid a courtesy call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Golden Jubilee House, Accra. He explained the visit was occasioned because of “our programme to build film studios across Africa,” starting with Ghana and its West African neighbours.

    The Hollywood superstar disclosed that while delibrating with his team, they noticed that “policy is where the actual groundwork” needs to be done to realise the dream for Africa.

    Idris, 50, argued that without the right policy underpinning filmmaking in Ghana, the plan to draw investors to the West African nation will be fruitless.

    “I’m led to believe that there are some plans for some other studios to be brought to Ghana which is fantastic and one should not cannibalise the other but without the policy component, I think, it’s safe to say that we can have as many studios as we want but we will not have the filmmakers attracted here,” he said.

    He also highlighted a personal project he aims to bring to Ghana.

    “What I want to do personally [is], I have a film that I am directing and I am hoping to bring that film or at least some of that film to shoot in Ghana. [For] that film, I would say we’d be here in December. We start pre-production in August. Some of the film, say two or three weeks, will be in Ghana, say by December,” he indicated.

    He announced his intention to use his film as a pilot to make a case for the grander project of bringing state-of-the-art studios to Africa to attract the international shakers in the movie industry and hoped for “a fair wind,” and consensus regarding what “we could do in terms of the policy.”

    “Needless to say, it’ll take a lot of collaboration to move quickly. However, it would be very beneficial for us to show and to make an announcement to the world that Ghana is open for business [so] here [are] the steps, the policies are in place, and we are actually bringing a film [by] one of [those of] the soil,” he touched his chest proudly, “to our country and we’re going to put our money where our mouth is.”

    In 2015, Idris Elba starred in a film based on a 2005 novel titled ‘Beast of No Nation’ (by Uzodinma Iweala), a title inspired by a Fela Kuti album of the same name. Shot in Ghana, the award-winning film birthed a new movie star, Abraham Attah.

  • Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit: Manhyia Palace to host in April 2023

    The Summit is scheduled to take place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 8, 2023.

    His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, is making efforts to guarantee that gold purchased from Ghana is mined and traded ethically.

    To ensure that gold obtained from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector is responsibly mined and traded in accordance with international standards and best practises, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has committed to establishing the “Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit.”

    His Majesty has demonstrated immense commitment to the eradication of illegal mining and promoting responsible mining, and at the Summit, he will work with stakeholders to ensure that interventions to halt environmental degradation are coordinated and fully supported.

    The Summit is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 April, 2023 at the Manhyia Palace, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, to precede the 24th Coronation Anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

    The Summit will be led by the Africa Responsible Mining in collaboration with E ON 3 Group and Ansong Askew Ltd. The event is supported by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its agencies, as well as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

    Other stakeholders, including international market makers, will also provide some collaboration.

    Outputs

    Outputs from the Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit will focus on aligning Ghana’s small-scale mining sector with the expectations of international markets.

    This will include measures to increase transparency and accountability in the sector in line with international standards of responsible sourcing.

    Otumfuo’s commitment

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will work with the government of Ghana, traditional leaders, political leaders, and international stakeholders to ensure that gold sourced from the country is responsibly mined and traded.

    His Majesty is committed to building confidence in the international community about transparency and accountability in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.

    The Asantehene’s quest for environmental protection and his abhorrence of illegal mining has been phenomenal. At various fora, he had minced no words about the need for Ghana to turn to responsible mining.

    At a Regional Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining, in Kumasi in May 2021, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II threatened to sanction chiefs within his jurisdiction who engage or assist in illegal mining activities.

    Also addressing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs in Kumasi on October 14, 2022, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, called out his sub-chiefs for not taking up the fight against illegal mining but rather, accepting monies from illegal miners thereby, making it difficult for their part to make any meaningful contribution to the fight against illegal mining.

    Again, in October 2022, when the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, called on His Majesty at the Manhyia Palace, he touched on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s promise of putting his presidency on the line during the height of the war against the illegal mining menace and wondered why the President had even put his presidency on the line, and yet illegal mining was going on.

    And at the last meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs for the year 2022, held in Kumasi on December 14, His Majesty re-emphasized his quest to root out illegal mining from his domain, and went head to state that, his office will from next year (2023), summon chiefs whose lands have been destroyed by illegal mining, for questioning.

    He warned that any chief who is unable to provide valid reasons would be sanctioned so that they will learn a lesson and protect their lands from illegal mining.

    The President of any country usually moves around with a convoy for official, sometimes ceremonial occasions; albeit with varying number of vehicles that escort same.

    In Ghana, President Akufo-Addo, like other presidents before him, are seen during many official and ceremonial events, being escorted by a number of vehicles, usually V8.

    It was a similar sight when President Akufo-Addo was captured leaving the palace of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in his presidential vehicle, being escorted by a convoy.

    This was after the President paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia palace during his tour of the region earlier this month.

    A set of black V8 vehicles lined up at the frontage of the Manhyia Palace and drove off one after the other after the President sat and was ready to move.

    President Akufo-Addo, during his visit, touched on issues regarding illegal mining and how to deal with the canker.

    Meanwhile, the president has been criticized on some occasions in the past, for using a long convoy when going on trips around the country.

     

     

  • 4 controversial statements of Akufo-Addo that shocked Ghanaians

    The President of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo, is currently in the Ashanti Region as part of a tour of the region.

    According to communication that was made public ahead of his four-day tour that started on Sunday, October 16, 2022, the president is expected to commission projects, inspect ongoing ones, and confer with traditional leaders of the area.

    On Sunday, 16th October, President Akufo-Addo visited the Manhyia Palace to interact with the Asantehene and Asantehemaa.

    As part of his itinerary, the president was also supposed to honour a number of radio appointments in the region.

    Having already done three days of his tour, there have been a number of concerns raised by some Ghanaians over how the president’s activities in the region have gone so far.

    Among those are a number of utterances the president has made in either his addresses at some of his scheduled engagements, and then others he made during his radio interviews.

    In an earlier interview, the president also courted the disaffection of Ghanaians over some statements he made.

    Below are some of the things Ghanaians wished President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should not have said, or, could have said better:

    I am not afraid to be voted against

    During an interview on OTEC Fm in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo made a comment that got many people literally in stitches.

    In the interview, the president stated that he is not moved by threats of electoral consequences by some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    He explained that he knows that people will vote for their preferred candidates in an election and that voters can also not be forced to make choices in a democratic dispensation, hence there was no need to threaten a government with votes.

    The president was responding to concerns raised by people in Manso and Kwabre, who had threatened to vote out the NPP in 2024 if their roads are not fixed.

    Their concerns were conveyed by the journalist who conducted the interview on OTEC FM.

    “The people of Kwabre and Manso, we know they voted massively for Nana, they have asked me to inform the president that if their roads are not fixed, they will be pained and in 2024, they will vote against the NPP,” the journalist asked after the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, had responded to a question.

    “No problem, no problem. I am saying people make those kinds of threats, me, they don’t frighten me. Somebody votes for you, somebody supports you, it is because they want you to do things for them, so I understand that,” the president quickly weighed in with a response.

    I will shame you all

    Still in the Ashanti Region for his tour, the president took an opportunity while making an address to send a statement to persons he believes are his political detractors in the region.

    According to him, these people will be shamed one by one by the numerous work he has done for the people of the region, which is considered the ‘political world bank’ of the governing party; the NPP.

    President Akufo-Addo stated that for the past six years that he has been in office, the people of the Ashanti Region have benefitted enough from his government, therefore, his detractors cannot say otherwise.

    “And to those of you going around saying bad things about me in the Ashanti Region, one after the other, they are all going to be shamed convincingly, today, tomorrow and the day after.

    “In spite of our present difficulties which I know will be gone as soon as possible, I continue to be excited about the future prospects of the nation and I urge all Ghanaians to join hands in building the Ghana that we want, we can realize it if we all work at it,” he said.

    The president was speaking during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Suame Interchange, on October 18, 2022.

    You can vote for NDC

    While still speaking in his interview on OTEC Fm in Kumasi, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made another comment about how unfazed he is about his party losing the next general elections.

    He explained that while there are threats to vote against them, he is unmoved, adding that intimidations of voting against the NPP due to unfulfilled promises or lack of development under his tenure, is a personal decision he cannot be bothered about.

    “People make those kinds of threats; they don’t frighten me. Somebody votes for you, and somebody supports you. It’s because they want you to do certain things for them. I understand that. But there is no need for people to say that if I am unable to do this and that… those are their own issues to deal with. Of course, I will do it (the road).

    “But if it comes to the election and you choose to vote for the NDC, that is your own issue that is not my worry because nobody holds your thumb to vote; it is your own work. The important thing is that I understand my responsibility, and we will deal with it,” the president said.

    I’m not so sure if Aisha Huang was deported

    In September, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted an interview to Stone City Radio in Ho during his tour of the Volta Region.

    During the interactions, he made a statement about the case of the embattled Chinese galamsey ‘kingpin,’ Aisha Huang (En Huang).

    The statement came under a lot of public scrutiny because it was determined to have contradicted what some of his appointees had said on the same subject, to the effect that Aisha Huang had actually been deported from Ghana in 2018.

    But speaking in that interview, President Akufo-Addo said it is likely that the ‘galamsey’ queen may not have been deported, but rather fled the country in 2018.

    “… I am not still sure whether she was, in fact, deported or whether she fled the country the first time and has now come back or whatever. There still seems to be some uncertainty about it.

    “Whichever way it is, she has become a sort of nickname for all that the ‘galamsey’ represents and also, unfortunately, for the involvement of Chinese nationals in this illicit trade,” he said.

  • No government has shown resilience to fight galamsey than mine — Nana Addo

    President Akufo-Addo has reiterated his commitment to end illegal mining popularly called galamsey in the country.

    He disclosed that no government in the history of Ghana has embarked on a more rigorous galamsey fight than his government.

    He made this known at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi at the start of a four-day tour of the Ashanti region.

    He said the galamsey menace that has been generated in recent times explains the importance Ghanaians attach to the issue.

    According to him, “We are here to eradicate galamsey and surely, it would be eradicated…No government has shown that resilience in the fight against galamsey.”

    “One issue that has generated negative public criticism is galamsey. Though it attracted less public discussion before my tenure, it is the talk of the town, even among traditional leaders.

    “This means the issue is common and calls for all hands on deck to bring it to an end, he stated.

    Earlier, the President said he was being truthful in his commitment when he proclaimed in 2017 to end galamsey.

    He disclosed that his fight against the menace five years ago cost him and the NPP “significant losses in the mining communities” during the election 2020.

    Galamsey is heavily criticized in Ghana due to its detrimental environmental effects which many believe outweigh any possible economic and cultural justifications.

    The practice of galamsey activities contributes tremendously to the local economy of the communities within which the practice is conducted.

    The number of galamseyers in Ghana is unknown but believed to be from 20,000 to 50,000, including thousands from China.

    The major cause of galamsey is unemployment among the youth in Ghana.

     

  • How Torgbui Gobah eulogized Asantehene at Akwasidae

    There is often this rift between persons belonging to the Akan and the Ewe ethnic groups, with each group accusing the other of some disrespect.

    But this was not the case at the celebration of the 7th Akwasidae in the Asante calendar at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, on Monday, October 4, 2022, which was attended by many dignitaries, including an Ewe chief, the chief of staff of the Forum for Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa, Torgbui Gobah Tengey.

    During a speech at the event, Torgbui Gobah Tengey, who is also an International Peace Ambassador, described the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as the greatest monarch in the world.

    He also praised the Ashantehene for his role in the maintenance of world peace.

    “His Majesty, my great brother, the greatest monarch of the world today by your deeds. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is a King of Peace. He has performed creditably, to the admiration of the whole world.

    “We call each other brothers. As an Ewe man, he loves me to the narrow. So, when we see each other, we are always smiling at each other. Otumfuo is a great King, a peacemaker, a loving father. Your peaceful overturns are unparalleled. A few years ago, you were at the United Nations, (and) you surprised the whole world with your oratory, ‘The African is a Great Son of the World’.

    “You have proved beyond reasonable doubt that Africans can remake the world. And I rely on you, we rely on you to have that union of fellowship among the rest of Africa so that we can conquer the world,” he said.

    Torgbui Gobah even went on to dedicate his “Development Chief of Africa” award which was conferred on him by the President of Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, to the Asantehene.

    “As a peace ambassador, I’ve been honoured by the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo through the All Africa Conference of Churches because of my peace overtures in the world.

    “It is through your (the Asantehene’s) prayers and blessings that I have reached that level in the world. And I’m showing this honour, for the first time, to you, my mentor, before it goes any were. But I would like you to keep this in your kingdom,” he said.

     

  • Asantehene: Illegal mining cannot be blamed on chiefs

    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II says state agencies and officials have been tasked to protect the environment and have urged them not to sleep on the job.

    The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has said traditional leaders cannot be blamed for the resurgence of illegal mining in Ghana, especially when they are not consulted when mining licences are issued.

    “At the district level, we have the political administration – the district chief executive and the security council. Are they all saying that they are unaware of the activities of these galamseyers?” Otumfuo asked when the new U.S. ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

    “If they are unable to detect and stop the operation of these galamseyers then they are unworthy to be there, it is as simple as that,” he added.

    During her first trip to the Ashanti Region, U.S. ambassador Palmer met with the Asantehene, other traditional leaders, civil society, and U.S. government alumni in Kumasi. The trip reiterated the United States’s commitment to economic development, inclusive prosperity, and accountable governance in Ghana.

    “I’m thrilled to visit Kumasi, the historic capital of the Ashanti Region. I was honoured to meet the Asantehene. Kumasi and its people are an important priority for the United States and I’m glad to have met so many Kumasifuo. I will be back soon,” said Palmer.

    Their discussions centered on the continuous U.S investment in Ghana’s human capital based on strong bilateral ties rooted in history and common democratic values. The Ambassador also paid a call on the leadership of the National House of Chiefs to discuss the vital role of traditional leaders in development, prosperity, and peace.

    She also met with the Ashanti regional minister Simon Osei-Mensah, focusing on the U.S government’s support for peacebuilding and governance, as well as promoting opportunity and development through inclusive investments in people.

    At a media roundtable with Kumasi journalists, ambassador Palmer reiterated to journalists the United States’s commitment to safeguarding press freedoms while promoting professional development for journalists.

    Meeting with the local entrepreneurs during her visit to the Kumasi Hive, Palmer underscored the importance of entrepreneurship in developing Ghana’s economy.

    “Promoting inclusion and economic growth, trade, and investment is one of the top priorities of the U.S. government, and enhancing the skills of entrepreneurs across various sectors can boost sustainable economic growth,” said Palmer.

    Earlier this year, with the support of the U.S. Embassy, the Kumasi Hive trained more than 300 local Senior High School students with entrepreneurship skills, including design thinking, marketing, and a pitch competition.

    Ambassador Palmer concluded her trip with Kumasi-based alumni of U.S. Government exchange programmes, including alumni of the Fulbright Program and Mandela Washington Fellowship.

     

  • Oyerepa FM resolves impasse with Kumasi Traditional Council over Odike comment

    The impasse between the Kumasi Traditional Council and Oyerapa FM over remarks made on their airwaves by Akwasi Addae, Odike, the founder of the United Progressive Party (UPP), has been settled.

    On Monday, the radio station’s managers together with clerics from the Methodist and Presbyterian churches visited Manhyia Palace to render an apology. They were accompanied by clerics from the Methodist and Presbyterian churches.

    After deliberations, an apology from managers of Oyerepa FM was accepted by the chiefs. This implies that the radio station can now resume its operations after it suspended it last Friday.

    Founder of United Progressive Party (UPP) and businessman, Akwasi Addae Odike had made some comments on a radio discussion programme on Oyerepa FM.

    The chiefs saw that as an attack on their integrity and said Odike was inciting the youth against the chiefs.

    Following from that, managers of the radio station attended a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting last Thursday to apologise for allowing their airwaves to be used by Odike for those comments.

    But the chiefs said the posture of the radio station was not indicative of a show of remorse and therefore advised the managers to retreat, show remorse by suspending operations, and approach the council on Monday with a meaningful apology.

    Also at the Manhyia Palace to meet the Kumasi Traditional Council over the issue was the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

  • Manhyia Palace rubbish reports that Kwame Kyei has been told to stop financing Asante Kotoko

    Manhyia Palace has denied reports that Asante Kotoko’s Executive Chairman Kwame Kyei has been stopped from financing the club.

    Last week, the home of the Asante King announced that the businessman’s has submitted a report after the expiration of his three-year tenure.

    Subsequently, a three-man committee has been tasked to probe the club’s affairs during Kyei’s reign.

    This led to speculations that the oil magnate has been told to distance himself from the club until the committee finishes its work.

    But this has been dispelled by Nana Kwame Mensah Aboagye, the Special Assistant of the Chief of Staff at Manhyia.

    ”It is not true, Kwame Kyei is still working for Asante Kotoko and funding all activities,” Nana Mensah told Kumasi-based Light FM.

  • Manhyia petitions GFA for two weeks on Kotoko board formation

    The Manhyia Palace have asked the Ghana Football Association to grant them two weeks to confirm the formation of Asante Kotoko’s board, according to reports in Kumasi.

    According to the Kumasi based Radio Oyerepa FM, Kotoko’s highest governing body are yet to furnish the FA with the club’s board, which is a requirement by the Club Licensing Board.

    Last week, Oyerepa FM reported that Asante Kotoko through Manhyia Palace had written to the GFA citing the coronavirus Pandemic and it’s lock down as reasons why they are yet to affirm names of those who will make up the board of directors.

    They are also reporting that a letter from Manhyia Palace asked for a 2 week grace period because the Palace is locked and within this time, the chief of staff will meet the designated members to undergo the necessary formalities.

    Source close to management of the club revealed to Oyerepa FM Sports that Dr.Kyei after doing the needful to submit the names was advised by His Royal Majesty through the office of the Chief of staff that he will let the chief of staff meet with them before they are inaugurated.

  • Riot police take over Manhyia Palace

    Riot police have taken over the Manhyia Palace to prevent Kumasi Youth Association executives from presenting their petition to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

    This comes at the back of an injunction secured by the Ashanti Regional Police Command barring leadership of the group from embarking on a planned demonstration over the lack of development and abandoned projects in the area.

    According to a copy of the injunction sighted by MyNewsGh.com and granted by a Kumasi High Court presided over by Justice L.A Wilson, the directive to step down the planned demonstration will be in force until otherwise discharged or varied by the court.

    Reject tribalism Manhyia Palace

    It is however gathered that the leadership’s attempt to visit the Manhyia Palace and present a petition to the King is the reason police were deployed to block the entry points and prevent them from doing so.

    According to the Kumasi Youth Association (KuYA) several developments in the region started by the previous administration have stalled and believes the demonstration would be the most appropriate platform to call on the Akufo-Addo led government to ensure the completion of such projects.
