Ex- Hearts of Oak coach, Martin Koopman accuses club Board of sabotage in player selection

Former Hearts of Oak coach, Martin Koopman, has levied serious allegations against the club’s Board of Directors regarding player selection during his tenure.

The Dutch coach and the club mutually agreed to part ways following a string of unsatisfactory results.

Koopman, who had initially signed a two-year deal with the club, disclosed in an interview that the Board of Directors instructed him not to utilise seven players at the beginning of the ongoing 2023–24 Ghana Premier League season.

He asserted that the club’s leadership had expressed a lack of trust in these players.

These revelations shed light on internal challenges within the club and raise questions about the dynamics between the coaching staff and the Board of Directors at Hearts of Oak during Koopman’s tenure.

“There are seven players they told me not to use in the competition. It was a day before our opening game,” Koopman told GhanaSportsPage.com.

“They named three players, but they later changed it to seven players (Annan, Korsah, Esso, Albert Eonde, Salifu, Seidu, and Attah).

They told me not to use them because they don’t believe them and they cannot help me in the competition,” he added.

Koopman managed to secure only two victories and a total of six goals in 10 Ghana Premier League matches during his tenure.

Hearts of Oak, currently without a new head coach, suffered an exit from the MTN FA Cup after being defeated by division-one side Nania FC.

The team is now in search of a suitable candidate to fill the coaching role.

Meanwhile, the Phobians are gearing up for their upcoming match on matchday 13 against Aduana FC at the Nana Agyemang Badu stadium on Sunday.

This match poses a significant challenge for the team, and their performance will be closely watched as they aim to recover from recent setbacks.

Ghana football in general has a problem, so don’t blame me for Hearts of Oak’s lack of goals – Martin Koopman

Head coach of Hearts of Oak, Martin Koopman, has firmly asserted that he should not be held accountable for his team’s goal-scoring issues, as he believes it is a nationwide concern.

In the sixth matchday fixture, the Phobians played to a goalless draw against FC Samartex 1996 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Hearts of Oak have managed to score just one goal in the ongoing 2023/24 Ghana Premier League, with Ramos Kashala credited for that solitary goal against Nsoatreman FC during the second matchday.

In a post-game statement, the Dutch coach emphasised that the entire country is grappling with the challenge in finding the back of the net.

He went on to state that he, personally, is not the root of the problem within the club. Koopman assured that they would persist in their efforts to secure the necessary victories and results.

“Look, there is a deep problem in Ghanaian football,” he told StarTimes.

“The problem is also with the national team. The wingers and the strikers cannot score goals, as I keep saying, and it is not only with us but it is happening in the national team and other clubs.

“We will do everything to win games and they must come and look at how we work with the boys.

“I think I am not the problem and also not the players because they gave everything but we need experience and then goals then we can move on from the problem,” he added.

Hearts of Oak will be hosted by the Bibiani Gold Stars in the matchday seven games at DUN’s Park next weekend.
