  • ‘Misinformation’ about Israel and Gaza hits McDonald’s

McDonald’s is losing business because people in the Middle East and other places are not buying their food. They think McDonald’s supports Israel.

CEO Chris Kempczinski has admitted in a post on LinkedIn that there was an impact, and he said that the negative reaction was due to incorrect information.

He is the second boss of a big company in the US to talk about how the Israel-Gaza war is affecting businesses.

    Starbucks has also had problems.

“Many markets in the Middle East and some other places are being affected by the war and false information, and it’s hurting businesses like McDonald’s,” Mr. Kempczinski wrote in the message.

“He said this is discouraging and not based on good reasons. ”

“In all the countries we work in, even those with a lot of Muslims, McDonald‘s is proudly run by local owners. ”

McDonald’s has lots of stores all over the world. Many of these stores are run by different people who own their own businesses. About 5 out of every 100 are in the Middle East.

Since Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, the McDonald’s main office has tried to stay out of the public eye when it comes to the fighting.

But its company is still involved in the conflict.

After the attack, McDonald’s Israel gave free meals to many members of the Israeli military.

The decision to move sparked people in countries that have a lot of Muslims to want to not buy the products. They were angry about Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The owners of the brand in countries where most people are Muslim wanted to make it clear that they were not connected to what was happening.

Mr Kempczinski posted about the growing tension over the boycotts.

The pro-Palestinian group BDS has now asked people to stop buying from McDonald’s, even though they didn’t focus on McDonald’s before.

McDonald’s Malaysia, supported by a company from Saudi Arabia, sued the Malaysia BDS group for $1. 3 million They said the group made untrue and harmful statements that hurt their business.

BDS wants McDonald’s to end its partnership with the franchisee in Israel and Malaysia if it doesn’t give up the lawsuit.

The group said that instead of asking McDonald’s to end its franchise in Israel, McDonald’s Malaysia and its Saudi owner are trying to stop people from showing support for the Palestinian liberation in Malaysia.

“We can’t allow this to happen. ” “Let’s prove to McDonald’s the power of regular people boycotting their products. ”

McDonald’s chose not to say anything about the lawsuit and pointed back to the post.

Mr Kempczinski said that we hate violence and don’t like hate speech. We will always welcome everyone with pride.

  • 16-year-old boy sentenced to life in prison for killing teenager who ‘tried to protect his friend’

16-year-old boy sentenced to life in prison for killing teenager who ‘tried to protect his friend’

A 16-year-old boy has been given life in prison for killing another teenager while they were trying to stop a fight outside McDonald‘s.

Ben Moncrieff was out with friends in Bath city center before he was killed on the street in the early hours of May 6.

The person who attacked, who was 15 years old and cannot be named because of the law, stabbed Mr. Moncrieff in the chest after he tried to stop a fight.

Despite everyone’s best efforts, including paramedics, he died at the scene on Southgate Street at about 3:30 in the morning.

At the Bristol Crown Court, they learned that Mr. Moncrieff and his friends had left a club and were on their way to McDonald’s when they came across a group of guys carrying balloons and suspected containers of nitrous oxide gas.

The security camera video showed the defendant arguing with one of Mr Moncrieff’s friends while using ‘laughing gas. ’

The jurors were told that Mr. Moncrieff stepped in to protect his friend, and one witness heard the defendant tell the victim to “come around the corner. ”

The person from south London dropped a gas can and then stabbed and killed Ben when he approached.

He ran away from the place and threw the knife in a nearby trash can. The police found the knife. He was taken by the police and didn’t say anything when they asked him questions.

Detectives started looking into a murder and watched many hours of video to find clues.

A video camera caught the person pulling up his shirt and showing a knife hidden in his pants before the attack.

Security cameras show what happened before Ben Moncrieff, who was trying to stop a fight, died.

Mark Cotter KC, who is arguing for the prosecution, said to the court: “The Crown believes that the defendant got into a fight with a friend of Mr. Moncrieff and Mr. Moncrieff tried to calm things down. ”

He was found guilty of killing someone after a six-day trial. He had admitted to having a knife in a public place.

Judge Peter Blair said that because of how much Mr. Moncrieff’s death has hurt his loved ones and the people of Bath, no punishment would be enough.

He said that the accused went out with a knife, but Mr. Moncrieff did not have anything in his hands.

Sharon Hendry, the mother of the victim, also spoke to the court in a personal and emotional statement.

She said, “Ben brought his friends to our home, and we all laughed and had a great time. Our home became a happy and lively place because of him. ”

She said she saw him getting ready to go out with his girlfriend, and then she rushed to his side after getting a call that he had been stabbed.

Sharon said: “I didn’t get to hold Ben and tell him how much I love him. ” I arrived too late to help Ben feel better. A mother’s biggest fear.

Ben’s room looks the same as when he left. I visit Ben’s room every day to remember the good times we had.

Ms Hendry talked about how she saw Ben in the mortuary and how it continues to affect her both physically and mentally. She said, “I feel completely destroyed and now have to live without Ben forever. “

  • McDonald’s patron arrested after ‘burning drive-thru manager with hot coffee’

A man who was ordering food at a McDonald’s drive-thru supposedly burned the manager with hot coffee after they argued about just one cent.

Elizar Ravelo, who is 64 years old, would often go to a fast food restaurant in Miami Springs, Florida. He would order a Sausage McMuffin with an egg and a senior coffee. This was shared by shift manager Nayib Garcia with Local 10 News.

But when he went to the restaurant at 4999 NW 36th St, he didn’t like how much the breakfast cost.

Security camera video recorded Ravelo having a disagreement with a person in charge of a store. When the boss gave Ravelo a hot cup of coffee, he hit the drink out of his hand and left quickly.

A customer at the Drive-Thru of McDonald’s hurt a worker by spilling hot coffee on them because of a disagreement over a small amount of money.
Garcia said: ‘I believe it hit her on the face and then on the rest of her arm. ‘ Most of the injury was on the arm.

‘The rest of the crew told me that it was because of a penny. ‘

Stephanie Restuccia, the manager who got burned, said she was very surprised by Ravelo’s actions.

In simpler words, she said: When I handed him the coffee, he suddenly broke it and spilled coffee everywhere. It burned my arm all the way from here to here. So I said to myself, “Alright, what comes next. ”

Restuccia said that the hot drink spilled on her arm and chest, causing red burns.

“She said that you never expect someone to actually do it. ”

A police report said that Ravelo was very angry because he thought he was being charged too much money.

Ravelo went to the police station on Monday because of something that happened on August 25.

He got arrested and accused of committing a serious physical assault. As of Tuesday morning, Ravelo was still in this certain place called the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. His bond was set at $5,000.

The accident occurred less than a month before an old lady filed a lawsuit against a McDonald’s in San Francisco. She got burnt on her private parts and legs when a cup of hot coffee spilled on her. The incident happened because the employee at the drive-thru didn’t close the lid properly.

  • Teenager passes away after consuming McDonald’s food and experiencing anaphylactic shock

Teenager passes away after consuming McDonald’s food and experiencing anaphylactic shock

A renowned young cellist passed away after eating a hamburger while on tour in Germany and experiencing anaphylactic shock.

Alexander Ngai-Jun Wu, 19, passed away in August of last year from multiple severe allergies, particularly to dairy products.

While on tour with other members of the Ealing Youth Orchestra, he’mixed’ ingredients at a McDonald‘s in Cologne, western Germany, and went into shock.

Coroner Lydia Brown told West London Coroner’s Court how the ‘outstanding musician’ immediately injected himself with his epipen after reacting to the mixture of foods, which she said had been part of a ‘team-building exercise’.

Despite the efforts of paramedics Alex died in hospital a week later.

Ms Brown said during the inquest there’d been no evidence of reckless behaviour leading to Alex’s death.

She added there were also no grounds to criticise the restaurant over its provision of allergen information.

Ms Brown said: ‘What is tragically apparent is that during the course of that lunchtime, he mingled together several food products from McDonald’s.

    ‘Some contained dairy food products.

‘I see it as the most awful, unfortunate incident that occurred not due to anyone’s carelessness, but simply as a consequence of an action that went so terribly and unexpectedly wrong.’

She added: ‘I hope his life can be remembered in happier times. This is an unbearable loss.’

According to an online tribute to Alex from family and friends, the young man had chosen to register as an organ donor.

His death allowed five lives to be saved, as well as restoring eyesight for two other people.

The tribute read: ‘Alex, or Jun, wholeheartedly embraced life with tremendous energy, spreading happiness through his music, his character and his humour. He was generous to his friends, family and strangers.

‘Alex managed his health challenges with great maturity and calmness. Despite the limitations these placed on him, he still maintained a buoyant and positive attitude.’

Ealing Youth Orchestra also said Alex’s fellow musicians had been ‘devasted’ by his sudden death.

A spokesperson for the orchestra said: ‘Alex was an outstanding musician and had enjoyed many previous tours with us.

‘The EYO family has been devastated by this tragedy and we continue to support Alex’s family and the orchestra and tour staff as we come to terms with this.’

  • Woman’s body discovered in a fast food restaurant’s walk-in freezer

Woman’s body discovered in a fast food restaurant’s walk-in freezer

A body has been discovered in a McDonald‘s walk-in freezer in New Iberia, Louisiana.

In a walk-in freezer at an Arby’s fast food outlet, a woman’s body was found.

According to KADN on Friday, the fatality was a worker at the Arby’s on E Admiral Doyle Drive in New Iberia, Louisiana.

Accordingly, an employee found the dead woman inside the cooler, according to New Iberia police Capt. Leland Laseter.

‘The deceased is an employee of the restaurant.’

The victim was an employee at the Arby's restaurant

Her death is being considered suspicious, although investigators are not expecting to find foul play involved.

‘Nothing is set in stone yet,’ Laseter said.

‘A situation like this is unusual, so we’re taking extra precautions during the investigation.

‘(We) pretty much have completed our process at the crime scene. After completely processing the crime scene… this does not seem like a homicide, it seems like an accident.’

Investigators interviewed a few workers at the Arby’s.

There have been no suspects named.

An autopsy has been conducted to determine the woman’s identity and cause of death.

‘We’re going to re-examine all the evidence tomorrow,’ Laseter said. ‘So there are a few more steps that we need to take before a determination is made.’

It is not the first crime scene involving a walk-in cooler at a fast food joint.

In 2019, a McDonald’s manager allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in the walk-in fridge of the fast food establishment in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The manager, Andrew Albertorio, was accused of flirting with the teenage girl when she walked into the McDonald’s and then communicating through Snapchat. He allegedly attacked her in four other instances at the fast food outlet, and in his car and his home.

Another cooler death occurred in December, when a man’s body was found in a freezer box in a home in South Philadelphia. Cops found a bloody knife next to the body and the man’s son was taken into custody.

  • McDonald’s signs legal agreement to better safeguard employees in the UK from sexual harassment

McDonald’s signs legal agreement to better safeguard employees in the UK from sexual harassment

The firm says that its top priorities are the safety and wellbeing of its employees, but a union has complained that this claim is not taken seriously enough.

A legal agreement between McDonald’s and the equality watchdog has been signed in response to complaints about the company’s handling of sexual harassment claims made by UK employees.

In 2019, a union that represents some workers alleged that more than 1000 complaints had been filed.

In the wake of strikes that affected restaurants in several US cities in 2018 over the same issue, the Bakers, Food, and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) claimed a “toxic culture” at UK locations.

The legally binding agreement with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) commits the group to a number of measures to better protect workers in the UK.

They include communicating a “zero tolerance” approach to sexual harassment, to provide anti-harassment training and to improve policies to better respond to complaints.

Alistair Macrow, chief executive of McDonald’s in the UK stressed that harassment and abuse “have no place in our society or at McDonald’s”.

He responded: “As one of the UK’s leading employers, the safety and wellbeing of our people is our absolute priority.

“It is hugely important to me that everyone in our organisation feels safe, respected and included at all times – this is core to the values of our business.

“We already have a strong track record in this area and I now welcome the opportunity to work with the EHRC to further strengthen this.”

The group had committed, in 2021, to anti-harassment training for its global workforce after it emerged that at least 50 employees worldwide had filed charges against the chain over the previous five years.

Ian Hodson, national president of the BFAWU, said: “It’s shameful that one of the richest corporations on the planet doesn’t take sexual harassment seriously until we raise it.

“I pay tribute to all our members who have spoken out on this issue and encourage McDonald’s to work with us in ending sexual harassment.”

EHRC chairwoman Baroness Kishwer Falkner said: “We are pleased that McDonald’s has signed this agreement to signal their intent to make their restaurants safe places to work.

“The improvements they put in place can set an example for others to follow, whether in the hospitality industry or elsewhere.”

McDonald’s: Former boss Easterbrook fined after staff relationship

The former boss of McDonald’s has been fined by the US financial watchdog for misleading investors about his firing in 2019.

Steve Easterbrook has agreed to pay a $400,000 penalty, without admitting or denying the claims.

The fast food chain fired him after finding he had had a consensual relationship with an employee.

At the time, the Chicago-based firm said that he had “violated company policy”.

Further investigation uncovered hidden relationships with other staff members.

The food giant prohibits “any kind of intimate relationship between employees in a direct or indirect reporting relationship”.

The British businessman initially received more than $105m (£86m) as part of a severance package.

But following an investigation, the other relationships came to light.

McDonald’s said had it been aware of this, it would not have approved the multimillion-dollar deal.

It launched legal action against Mr Easterbrook, accusing him of lying about sexual relationships with staff.

In December 2021, Mr Easterbrook returned the money and apologised for failing to uphold the firm’s values.

On Monday, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States said that he had made “false and misleading statements to investors”.

It added: “Easterbrook knew or was reckless in not knowing that his failure to disclose these additional violations of company policy prior to his termination would influence McDonald’s disclosures to investors related to his departure and compensation.”

McDonald’s was also charged by the SEC with “shortcomings” in its public disclosures related to Easterbrook’s firing.

However, the agency said the firm had “substantially co-operated” with the investigation and would not be hit with any fines as a result.

McDonald’s said the SEC order reinforced the fact it held Mr Easterbrook “accountable for his misconduct”.

“We fired him, and then sued him upon learning that he lied about his behaviour,” it said.

“The company continues to ensure our values are part of everything we do, and we are proud of our strong ‘speak up’ culture that encourages employees to report conduct by any employee, including the CEO, that falls short of our expectations.”

Mr Easterbrook, a UK citizen who grew up in Watford, Hertfordshire, led McDonald’s from March 2015 to November 2019, after previously leading its UK operations.

He was widely credited with revitalising the firm’s menus, remodelling stores and using better ingredients. The value of its shares more than doubled during his tenure in the US.

  • McDonald’s sends job cut warnings

    McDonald’s sends job cut warnings

As part of a significant reorganization that would also hasten the development of new locations, McDonald‘s CEO has warned employees to expect job layoffs.

The company’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, said that a “outdated and self-limiting” structure was harming the fast food juggernaut.

“We are trying to solve the same problems multiple times, aren’t always sharing ideas,” he said.

In a letter sent to employees globally, it said it would review corporate staffing levels by April.

“There will be difficult discussions and decisions ahead,” the memo said.

McDonald’s employs about 200,000 people in corporate roles and its owned restaurants, with 75% of them outside located outside of the US.

Its chief executive also announced that certain projects will be stopped altogether.

“This will help us move faster as an organization, while reducing our global costs and freeing up resources to invest in our growth,” he wrote in to the letter to staff, which was shared with investors.

The firm did not provide details about the scope of the job cuts being looked at, or say which projects might be affected.

But in an interview with the Wall Street Journal newspaper, Mr Kempczinski said he did not have a fixed goal for the number of cuts.

“Some jobs that are existing today are either going to get moved or those jobs may go away,” he said.

    Pandemic boost

As part of the new strategy, Mr Kempczinski said the company wants to push to open more restaurants “to fully capture the increased demand we’ve driven over the past few years”.

Although dining generally suffered during the pandemic, McDonald’s has benefited from investments the firm made in online ordering and home deliveries.

In the first nine months of the year, McDonald’s saw sales rise 6%, helped by price increases to items like its cheeseburgers.

But its profits overseas have been hurt by the rise of the dollar and the exit from Ukraine.

During its most recent update to investors in October, the firm said rising prices were also posing challenges, noting that at many of its restaurants – which are operated by franchisees – there was “increasing uncertainty and unease about the economic environment”.

The Chicago-based company operates in more than 160 countries around the world.

It said earlier this week it would be pulling out of Kazakhstan, which borders Russia, pointing to supply chain issues sparked by the war in Ukraine.

McDonald’s pledged to leave Russia in May after setting up there 32 years ago – the latest change after several years of upheaval in the restaurant industry.

  • Dispatcher answers 911 call about McDonald’s robbery, realizes it’s her daughter

A woman had been helping with answering calls at an emergency dispatch center in New Orleans last month when she suddenly heard her 16-year-old daughter on the other line, WDSU reports.

“Mama, please hurry up she’s got a gun,” Tenia Hill told her mother Teri Clark. Hill was working at a McDonald’s when an armed robber came inside, and forced her and her co-workers in the freezer. “We are going to hurry, give me a description,” Clark responded.

“I was in a state of shock,” Clark, an assistant operations manager at the Orleans Parish Communications District, told WDSU. She decided to stay late and take calls when Tenia called. “What broke me down was when my child said, ‘We’re in the freezer.’ And I said, ‘The freezer?’ … While I was taking the call, tears coming down my face, but I am still trying to do my job,” she recalled.

Clark managed to remain calm throughout their interaction, and relay the necessary information to the New Orleans Police Department. Hill and her fellow employees were found safe and sound in the freezer when officers arrived at the scene.

“I was really scared because I would never imagined at my first job I would be getting robbed let alone having a gun pointed at me,” Hill said of the incident.

“I was very worried because I didn’t want my mom to have to bury her youngest child. I could have lost my life, but she saved my life. I was very happy.”

  • Cop who shot 17-year-old in McDonald’s parking lot charged, teen still on life support

A Texas cop who was previously reported to have been fired after shooting a teen in a McDonald’s parking lot has now been charged.

Per a report from the Associated Press, 25-year-old James Brennand was still in custody as of Wednesday morning after turning himself in the prior evening. Brennand, who was fired last week, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault by public servant.

Erik Contu, 17, was eating inside his car when Brennand (as seen in subsequently shared body cam video) approached and told him to exit. At the time, Brennand claimed, he believed the vehicle was the same one that had “evaded him” the night before. As the car is seen being driven away, the officer fires into the vehicle, hitting Cantu.

When reached for comment by Complex on Wednesday, an attorney for Contu’s family confirmed that the teen remained on life support.

“We have no comment to the former officer’s arrest at this time,” the family said. Our main priority is Erik’s recovery. Erik is still on life support and is non-responsive but his oxygen levels are showing an improvement. We are being patient and optimistic that better health is coming. Please continue to keep Erik in your thoughts and prayers.”

The San Antonio Police Department confirmed Brennand’s arrest when reached for comment. A rep also confirmed that detectives with SAPD’s homicide unit had filed the two aforementioned aggravated assault charges following a criminal investigation.

In a previously released statement following the announcement that Brennand’s employment had been terminated, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the officer’s actions “were not in accordance” with the expectations of the department.

“Swift action was taken by the chief to terminate the officer and I am relieved that this decision is final,” Nirenberg said at the time.

  • Texas police officer fired after body cam footage captured him shooting teenager in McDonald’s parking lot

A Texas police officer has been fired after body cam footage captured him shooting an unarmed teenager in a McDonald’s parking lot.

The Associated Press reports San Antonio Officer James Brennand opened fire on Erik Cantu, 17, on Oct. 2 while Cantu was sitting in his car eating a hamburger.

“While Sunday’s shooting of an unarmed teenager by a then-San Antonio Police officer remains under investigation, the facts and evidence we have received so far led us to reject the charges against Erik Cantu for further investigation,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said.

“As we do with all officer-involved shootings that result in death or serious injury, we will submit the case to a Grand Jury for their consideration. Until that happens, we can make no further comment on this matter,” Gonzales added.

Brennand, who was on the police force less than a year, approached the teen, who opened the door before driving away, at which point Brennand shot several times at the car.

“The officer abruptly opened the driver’s door and ordered the driver out of the car” before the arrival of backup officers that Brennand had requested, Campos told reporters.

Cantu, who was hospitalized in stable condition, has been charged with evading police and aggravated assault.

“There is nothing I can say in defense of that officer’s actions that night,” Police Chief William McManus told WOAI-TV. “I think what happened, initially, there was some contact made, but that did not justify the shooting.”

  • McDonald’s plans to reopen in Kyiv and western Ukraine

McDonald’s has announced plans to reopen outlets in Ukraine, which closed after Russia’s invasion in March.

The fast food chain said it hoped the move would help restore a “small but important sense of normalcy”.

There will be a phased reopening over the next several months in Kyiv and western Ukraine in areas deemed safe, the burger giant said.

McDonald’s had more than 100 restaurants in Ukraine before the conflict started.

The company has continued to pay wages to more than 10,000 staff since then.

“We’ve spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen, where it is safe and responsible to do so,” senior vice president Paul Pomroy said in a message posted on the firm’s website.

“In recent months, the belief that this would support a small but important sense of normalcy has grown stronger. And Ukrainian officials have advised that businesses resuming operations will support the local economy and the Ukrainian people.”

Analysts expect the war to trigger a 35% or more economic decline in Ukraine this year, disrupting exports, devastating key infrastructure, and forcing shut thousands of businesses.

In June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at a meeting of western business leaders hosted by Yale University and urged firms to invest in the country.

He has also celebrated the reopening of dozens of embassies in Kyiv, including the UK’s in April.

McDonald’s said it was working with suppliers and contractors to ensure the restaurants were ready for reopening.

KFC, Nike and Zara are among the other western brands whose stores are reported to be open in the country.

McDonald’s also suspended operations in Russia in March, and in May sold most of its Russian restaurants to a local licensee.

  • McDonald’s increases price of cheeseburger for first time in 14 years

The prospect of a 99p McDonald’s cheeseburger is no more as the fast food giant increases the price of several items on its menu amid the cost of living crisis.

The company is raising the price of its signature cheeseburger for the first time in over 14 years, taking it to £1.19.

It will also add between 10 and 20p to the several menu items it says are impacted the most by inflation.

The chain is one of many companies passing the effect of soaring costs of fuel and ingredients on to its customers, including the consumer goods giant behind the likes of Marmite and Magnums.

Breakfast meals, main meals, large coffees, and McNugget share boxes are among the menu items which could become up to 20p more expensive, a spokesperson for McDonald’s told Sky News.

Salads and wraps are unlikely to be affected.

The changes came into effect on Wednesday.

  • McDonald’s apologises after China store bans black people

US chain McDonald’s has apologised after a sign telling black people they were banned from entering a branch in southern China prompted outrage online, following reports of discriminatory treatment towards Africans in the city.

Tensions have flared between police and Africans in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou after local officials announced a cluster of COVID-19 cases in a neighbourhood with a large migrant population.

As the row escalated, posts widely shared online showed a sign at fast food chain McDonald’s saying black people were not allowed to enter the restaurant.

The chain apologised and a spokesman for McDonald’s told AFP that the notice was “not representative of our inclusive values”.

In an emailed statement, Mcdonald’s said it removed the sign and temporarily closed the Guangzhou restaurant “immediately upon learning of an unauthorized communication to our guests.”

Several Africans have told AFP they had been forcibly evicted by police from their accommodation, refused service at shops and restaurants, and were subject to mass testing and arbitrary quarantines.

The row has also prompted a diplomatic flurry, with ambassadors and envoys from more than 20 African countries meeting assistant foreign minister Chen Xiaodong on Monday.

Chen promised at the meeting to “lift the health management (measures) on African people, except the confirmed patients”, according to a foreign ministry statement.

He said the Guangdong government is “constantly taking measures to improve” and act “according to the principle of non-discrimination”.

The statement said Chen asked the envoys to “look at the big picture of China-Africa friendship.”

Diplomatic sources told AFP a number of African countries had written a joint letter to the foreign ministry, which condemned the “discrimination and stigmatisation of Africans” in China, but had not yet sent it.

Guangzhou’s US consulate issued an alert on Saturday advising African-Americans to avoid travel to the city due to the targeted crackdown, and the US accused Chinese authorities of “xenophobia” toward Africans.

Beijing has also accused the US of using the row for political purposes to “drive a wedge” between China and Africa.

A total of 111 African nationals in Guangzhou have tested positive for COVID-19, including 19 imported cases, said the city’s executive vice mayor on Monday, according to Xinhua.

He said that 4,553 Africans had undergone nucleic acid testing in Guangzhou since April 4.

But city officials said on Sunday that 4,553 African nationals are currently living in Guangzhou — suggesting every African registered in the city has been tested.
