Al Ahly petitions CAF to postpone Medeama SC clash

Al Ahly SC, the Egyptian football giants, have formally requested the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postpone their upcoming match against Ghanaian champions Medeama SC.

In a statement released on Wednesday night, Ahly explained that their delegation’s flight from Accra to Kumasi was unable to complete its journey.

Despite landing in Accra for refuelling, the plane experienced a collision with the front of the fuselage, resulting in a malfunction that rendered it unable to continue flying, despite efforts to resolve the issue.

Efforts to secure an alternative flight for the Al Ahly contingent proved unsuccessful, leading to them spending the night in Accra.

They are expected to board the first flight to Kumasi on Thursday morning.

According to competition rules, visiting teams must undergo at least one training session at the match venue before matchday.

However, with Ahly set to arrive on Thursday, it is unlikely that they will be able to train on the same day due to concerns about jetlag.

Given these circumstances, Ahly has formally written to CAF to request postponing Friday’s match to Saturday.

Currently, the defending champions lead Group D with six points, while Medeama SC sits at the bottom of the group with four points, with two matches remaining in the group stage.

The Goldfields Ghana Foundation has recently unveiled an impressive $13 million investment plan for the development of the T and A Stadium, which is poised to become the new home ground for Medeama SC, a notable football club.

In a remarkable move, the mining company has taken on the responsibility of constructing this stadium, which is designed to comfortably host a crowd of up to 10,400 enthusiastic spectators.

This strategic initiative has been spurred by Medeama’s recent achievement in successfully qualifying for the group stage of the prestigious CAF Champions League, showcasing their growing prominence in the African football scene.

Notably, earlier this month, Medeama publicly acknowledged receiving communication from Goldfields Ghana regarding the finalisation of their sponsorship agreement.

While the company has not officially refuted this information, they have now offered an update on the ongoing progress of the stadium’s construction, further cementing their commitment to this promising partnership.

According to a statement from the company, “The Foundation has so far invested over US$13 million in the stadium, out of a budgeted US$16 million, and this has proven to be one of the high-cost ticket items it has funded besides the Tarkwa to Damang asphalted road.”

Additionally, Goldfields Ghana has allocated an amount of US$100,000 to support the Tarkwa-based club in its advertising efforts.

“The advertising package, which covers various areas including jersey and bus branding, is for a period of one year, 2023-2024,” the statement further specified.

Current Ghana Premier League champions, Medeama SC, have not yet received the 1 million cedis promised by President Nana Dankwa Akufo-Addo following their victory in the 2022–23 Ghana Premier League.

The pledge of support was made when the club presented the league trophy to the President on August 2, 2023.

The presentation was led by Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa.

The team was accompanied by chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, the club’s board chairman, Dr. Tony Aubynn, head coach Evans Augustine Adotey, as well as management and technical team members.

According to Patrick Akoto, the Communications Director for the club, Medeama SC has incurred significant costs in their journey, particularly due to their travels to Conakry to face AC Horoya and Remo Stars of Nigeria in the preliminary rounds of qualification for the ongoing 2023–24 CAF Champions League.

Despite these financial challenges, the club remains thankful to the President and remains optimistic that he will fulfill his promise to alleviate their expenses during future travels.

“We are grateful to the President for the support and pledge. He promised us 1 million cedis and we are still using diplomatic communication to ensure that we get it from the government.

“We are confident that the money will be delivered to us in no time. We are hopeful that it will come and come really rapid and fast”, he told GhanaWeb’s Sports check.

Akoto further emphasized that, as they progress into the group stages of the CAF Champions League and face a challenging path ahead, the club will require the support of corporate entities in Ghana.

In Group D, the team from Tarkwa will confront tough opposition, including the reigning African champions Al Ahly, the formidable CR Belouizdad from Algeria, and Tanzania’s Young Africans, as they strive to make their mark on the continental stage.

CAF Champions League: Put things in place and prepare well – Bashir Hayford advises Medeama SC and Dreams FC

Former coach of Asante Kotoko, Bashir Hayford, has shared a valuable advice with Medeama and Dreams FC as they prepare for their upcoming CAF inter-club competitions.

After their successful performances in domestic competitions, Medeama SC and Dreams FC are set to represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup, respectively.

In an interview with the media he emphasized the importance of managing expectations for both clubs.

He points out that previous Ghanaian representatives’ results in Africa should serve as a wake-up call for Medeama SC and Dreams FC.

Hayford urges the clubs to put proper measures in place and prepare thoroughly. He suggests strengthening their squads and scouting players from Africa to enhance their performance, similar to other African clubs.

The experienced coach advises them to lower their expectations and focus on building quality from the start.

By recognizing their opponents’ qualities and working diligently, they can make a strong impact in the competition.

“The results of the clubs who previously represented Ghana should be a wake-up call to Medeama SC and Dreams FC. This should even be an advise to them,” Coach Bashiru Hayford told Mothers FM.

“Our clubs perform poorly in Africa. Some were even eliminated from the preliminary round (just after two games).

“They should put things in place and prepare well. It will be good for them to beef up their squad. If they want to perform well then they should start scouting players in Africa like other African clubs,” he divulged.

“They should lower their expectations because their opponents are having the qualities. How do we build the quality? We build quality from the start. They should lower their expectations for the competition,” he concluded.

Former captain of Hearts of Oak, Yaw Amankwah Mireku is unhappy about the sacking of coach Samuel Boadu.

The leadership of the Phobians on Tuesday announced the sacking of the former Medeama SC gaffer and his backroom staff after failing to win a game in the new season.

But according to Amankwah Mireku, the club should have been patient with the coach who won five trophies in his two years with the team.

“For me, I wasn’t happy with the news. I don’t think he (Boadu) should’ve been sacked because he won 5 trophies in 2 seasons. This is a club that had won nothing in a decade,” said Amankwah Mireku on Peace FM.

Boadu’s last game was against Asante Kotoko, with the Phobians earning a late draw in Kumasi.

Meanwhile, the club have named U20 coach Nii Noi to be in charge of the club ahead of the game against Gold Stars on Sunday.

Hearts of Oak will face Real Bamako in the CAF Confederation Cup on October 8, 2022.

  • What crime has Medeama committed – Coach Samuel Boadu

Medeama coach Samuel Boadu believes his side were handed a raw deal in their 1-1 draw with Asante Kotoko on Sunday in Tarkwa.

“I don’t want to talk about officiating because if I voice out what is in me, I will be paying GH¢5,000 to the GFA,” he told StarTimes in a post-match interview.

“I don’t know the crime Medeama has committed against the referees. Officiating both home and away hasn’t been good for us.”

  • Medeama SC facing transfer ban

Tarkwa-based Ghana Premier League outfit Medeama SC is in danger of suffering a transfer ban, FMiG can confirm.

The ban to be slapped on them by the Ghana Football Association will be in compliance with an FA Appeals Committee decision.

Per the decision, the club is supposed to pay its former player, Nathaniel Asamoah the sum of $54,000 as a result of monies owed him as part of an agreement between both parties when the player was transferred to Moroccan side Raja Casablanca.

Asamoah transferred to Raja in August 2015 in a move worth $150,000. Per the arrangement between the player and his former club, he was due 40% of the transfer fee which Medeama has failed to pay till date.

Aside paying Asamoah, Medeama SC is also supposed to pay the Ghana FA the sum of $15,000, representing 10% of the overall transfer fee.

In enforcing an earlier ruling by its Appeals Committee, the Ghana FA has charged Medeama SC to pay Asamoah the above-quoted amount before November 18 or face sanctions.

Among the sanctions include deductions of 3 points for every league match played until the payment is made in full after elapsing of the November 18 date and also a transfer ban (domestic and international).
