I’ll record my next album in Africa – Meek Mill reveals

American rapper Meek Mill, known offstage as Robert Rihmeek Williams, has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce his upcoming album on the African continent.

Stressing the artistic direction behind his music, Meek Mill aims to bring his American team along for the journey, promising to deliver a groundbreaking addition to his discography.

While keeping the exact location undisclosed, he revealed a concise two-week timeline for the recording process.

“Ima go to Africa and record my next album. Stay for two weeks, bring my producers, my art, mash up,” confidently declared Meek Mill.

The rapper had previously visited Ghana as part of the “Year of Return” initiative, where he explored tourist sites and immersed himself in Ghanaian culture.

It is yet to be known if his preferred destination is Ghana.

“I wanna get citizenship in Ghana” – Meek Mill

American rapper Robert Rihmeek Williams, popularly known as Meek Mill, says he is considering acquiring Ghanaian citizenship.

The rapper faced criticism in the previous year for filming a music video inside Ghana’s presidential palace.

Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Meek Mill voiced discontentment with his current living situation in the United States.

The rapper wrote; “I wanna get citizenship in Ghana!!!! America made to tear black men down if you don’t follow orders!”

This isn’t the initial occasion the rapper has mentioned Ghana since his initial visit in 2023. During a question and answer session on X in October 2023, Meek Mill revealed his intention to revisit Ghana.

Although he didn’t specify a precise date, Meek Mill pledged to sign an artist from Ghana during his upcoming trip.

His initial visit stirred controversy when he filmed a music video at the Jubilee House, drawing criticism from Ghanaians.

Accusations of “desecrating” the Jubilee House surfaced, with MPs voicing concerns about potential security risks.

In a statement, Mill said he would “take responsibility for my mistake. To the people of Ghana, no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana,” he wrote.

“The fastest way to make connection is thru music [sic] and I wanted to do that with displaying art. I’m in my 30s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle.”

He added that officials for Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, may not have been aware he was shooting a music video, saying the set-up had been “a small camera and a kid”.

Meanwhile, this development follows social media speculation suggesting that he might be one of the unnamed musicians reportedly involved in sexual relations with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

These allegations emerged in a lawsuit against the American music mogul, accusing him of sexual assault and sex trafficking.

However, the artist’s identity remains undisclosed in the publicly available documents, and he has not been directly accused of any wrongdoing in the lawsuit filed by Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones.

Meek Mill expresses interest in collaborating with African artiste for new album

American rapper, Meek Mill, took to social media to seek suggestions from fans on which African artist from Nigeria or Ghana he should collaborate with for his upcoming album.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, January 30, Meek Mill, known for his impressive rap skills, confidently mentioned that he could produce the entire album in just two weeks with the right producer.

“If I made an album with an African artist, who should it be??? Question to Nigeria Ghana? I rap well; I could do it in 2 weeks with a good producer??? Leave a comment, who?” tweeted Meek Mill.

While the rapper has not yet featured any Ghanaian or Nigerian artist on his tracks, he did reveal in a recent tweet that he charges $250,000 for a verse.

However, he expressed willingness to negotiate down to $150,000 in certain circumstances, especially if he likes the song.

“Every time I do a verse I charge 250k and up. If you got 150k on sight and I like the song, we can swap it outtt!!!!“ shared Meek Mill on social media.

Explaining the reasoning behind his pricing, Meek Mill emphasised that some artists need additional platforms for self-promotion.

With a massive fan base exceeding 50 million people and effective playlisting on streaming platforms, he believes he can significantly contribute to the promotion of fellow musicians.

Notably, Meek Mill has shown an affinity for Ghana, having visited the country multiple times for holidays and even shooting a music video at the Jubilee House, sparking various controversies.

In a promising development during his 2023 visit to Ghana, Meek Mill pledged to sign a Ghanaian artist onto his record label, Dream Chasers Records, during his subsequent visit to the country.

This announcement came during an interaction with fans on social media.

“Ima sign one next time I come! Remember this post!” affirmed the rapper, expressing his commitment to discovering and supporting talent from the vibrant Ghanaian music scene.

I’m willing to charge $150K per verse – Meek Mill on collaborations

Ghanaian musicians aspiring to collaborate with American rapper Meek Mill now have a golden opportunity, as the rapper has announced reduced rates for his verses.

Meek Mill recently disclosed that his standard fee for a verse is $250,000, but he is open to negotiations, considering a reduced rate of $150,000 in certain situations.

Given the rapper’s affection for Ghana, it’s highly likely that collaborations from the country would be deemed the right circumstances.

On X, Meek shared, “Every time I do a verse I charge 250k and up. If you got 150k on sight and I like the song, we can swap it outtt!!!!”

Undoubtedly, Ghana boasts exceptional talents like Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, King Promise, and others, renowned for creating remarkable music.

Given their prowess, it’s highly likely that Meek Mill would readily accept $150,000 or potentially even less for the chance to craft a global hit with these talented artists.

Comparing this to a 2022 Complex roundup on rapper feature prices, Meek Mill’s fee aligns with industry standards.

Notably, it surpasses J. Cole’s unique approach, as the latter clarified that he doesn’t charge for a verse. Cole emphatically debunked rumors of a $2,000-per-word rate during a podcast appearance.

“I’m not charging [anyone] for the verse. I’m doing this because I’m inspired to do it.

Meek Mill further clarified that his worth goes beyond chart rankings. Beyond delivering a verse, collaborating artists also tap into his vast audience, which boasts tens of millions of actively engaged followers.

He underscored the collaborative opportunity as a means to amplify an artist’s reach, offering valuable data, fanbase expansion opportunities, and extensive marketing benefits.

Renowned rapper Robert Rihmeek Williams, known professionally as Meek Mill recently disclosed that he commands a staggering $250,000 for a verse, but he’s open to negotiation, willing to lower the price to $150,000 under the right circumstances.

In a recent social media update, Meek shared, “Every time I do a verse I charge 250k and up if you got 150k on sight and I like the song we can swap it outtt!!!!”

A 2022 Complex roundup on rapper feature prices indicates that Meek’s fee aligns with industry standards.

However, in contrast, fellow artist J. Cole made headlines last year by revealing that he doesn’t charge for a verse, dismissing rumours of a $2,000-per-word rate.

Cole explained on Lil Yachty and Mitch’s A Safe Place podcast, “Yo, bro, it’s just a bar, bro. I’m not gonna charge a na $2,000 a word. I don’t even charge na for the verse, I’m doing this shit because I’m inspired to do it.”

Meek defended his pricing strategy, emphasising that his involvement brings more than just chart performance.

He highlighted the opportunity for artists to expand their audience through his tens of millions of engaged followers, providing them with data, fanbase opportunities, and mass marketing.
In a surprising turn of events, Meek Mill shared his interest in real estate by expressing his quest for 15 acres in south New Jersey, explicitly requesting no wetlands.

With this revelation, it seems Meek is not only making waves in the music industry but also eyeing an expansion of his real estate portfolio. Real estate enthusiasts, it’s your time to shine!

Meek Mill replies critics over controversial tweet about Africa: “How do you listen to my music?”

In a recent social media post, popular American rapper Robert Rihmeek Williams popularly known as Meek Mill ignited a firestorm of criticism after questioning how his music is consumed in Nigeria and South Africa.

The rapper’s inquiry, posted on X, led to accusations of ignorance and insensitivity from many African users.

Meek Mill’s query, “Do a lot of people play my music in South Africa? How do you all listen to our music in South Africa???? On what platform, or in Nigeria?” drew sharp rebukes as some felt it implied a lack of technological advancement in Africa’s music distribution landscape.

As the backlash intensified, the rapper became a trending topic on X, with critics highlighting the perceived assumption about the continent’s technological capabilities.

Some users responded humorously, suggesting absurd methods like listening through elephant trunks and town criers.

In an attempt to clarify his intentions, Meek Mill responded to the criticism on Sunday, asserting that his inquiry was driven by a desire to understand how his music is distributed in Africa and manage his business effectively.

The rapper explained, “I was asking how they listen to music in Africa because I want to handle my business. None of my contracts say they have rights to distribute me in Africa… basically looking for the money trail? I don’t know what platforms [are] used in South Africa.”

Meek Mill’s response aims to dispel the notion of ignorance and emphasizes his business-oriented approach to understanding the African music market.

His statement was a response to a fan who asked on Twitter (now X) why he deleted the visuals then.

The Tweep asked, “Why did you delete the music video you shot when you came to Ghana?” Meek Mill replied, “They ain’t like it I respect people.”“I’m coming back to Ghana too.“

An Attorney from the Attorney General’s Department opposed the grant of bail extended to Sulley pointing out that he was the same person who was before an Accra Circuit Court for charges of phone theft against American Wrapper Meek Mills at the Independence Square during the Afro nation concert last December.

According to state prosecutors, Sulley, when granted bail, was likely to commit a similar offence, and was a flight risk.

In Sulley’s application for bail, the Defence Counsel described Sulley as a law-abiding person who had never had a brush with the law and was also a peaceful member of society.

According to his lawyer, Sulley has people who were ready to stand as sureties.

  • Meek Mill looks back on how his life changed five years ago due to a prison sentence

Meek Mill looks back on how his life changed five years ago due to a prison sentence

Five years have passed since Meek Mill was released from prison after serving a probation violation sentence that sparked controversy and spurred the #FreeMeekMill movement.

Since then, the recording artist behind hits like “All Eyes on You” has dedicated his life to reforming laws around probation and parole, with the launch of the REFORM Alliance. Mill co-founded the group in 2018 with Jay-Z, Michael Rubin and Van Jones. They have since passed 16 bills in 10 states around probation and parole laws, according to the organization.

“Not committing a [violent] crime still led me to prison being locked in a small room 23 hours a day, being locked up with murderers and eating junk food, sleeping on concrete,” Mill told CNN in a recent interview. “You know, that was a lot. I try to see past it and not to dwell on things like that, not bitter about it because it is my life and what brought me to who I am today.”

Mill received a two-to-four-year prison sentence in 2017 for violating probation from a 2008 gun and drug case. The violation occurred when he was arrested after being involved in a fight and later for popping wheelies on a dirt bike.

His sentence sparked calls for criminal justice reform from notable artists and athletes, including Colin Kapernick, Rick Ross, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and comedian Kevin Hart. Mill spent five months of his sentence incarcerated before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered his immediate release.

“A huge part of what we do is to tell the story of people impacted by the system,” Robert Rooks, CEO of the REFORM Alliance said. “People like Meek and others who get sent back to jail or prison for not for committing a new crime but for staying out past curfew or for seeing a loved one outside the city, town or county – those are just some of the reasons why we are telling the stories of everyday people who are currently trapped in our nation’s probation and parole system.”

Mill said his efforts to make a positive impact start close to home.

“One of my most memorable moments was recently buying my grandmother her first house and giving her a better way of living because she’s the one that laid out opportunity for my whole family,” he said. “And to be able to just set structure for my family and be able to help people, that’s a new part of my life that I’ve really enjoyed.”

Rick Ross reportedly buys Meek Mill’s Mansion for $4.2M

Rick Ross has increased his real estate holdings by shelling out a cool $4.2 million for his Atlanta property, much to Meek Mill’s surprise.

According to a news release, the MMG tycoon recently concluded the sale of the massive Georgia property that had been on the market for around two years.

Rozay reportedly paid the seven-figure fee in cash, as is customary for Biggest Bawse contestants.

His realtor, Alisha Gillooly, said of the sale, “I’ve been working to make an impact in the luxury market and this did just that.” Ross already has a large house in Georgia that he lovingly refers to as “The Promise Land,” but Meek’s old house is nothing to belittled.

In addition to a swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis court, movie theater, and playground, the suburban compound has eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

Meek announced just days ago that he had sold the house, tweeting: “I sold that house that quick …. It was forsale for like 2 years… i knew it would soon as I posted too!”

However, the identity of the buyer was apparently mystery to the Dream Chasers rapper, who took to his Instagram Stories on Wednesday (April 12) to share his surprise at his MMG boss being the one who snapped it up.

“Sold rozay the big fish estates … I aint even know he bought this lol,” he wrote.

I’m taking my hood to Africa, they’ve got to see Ghana – Meek Mill

Following criticism from many Ghanaians for filming portions of a music video at the Jubilee House, American rapper Meek Mill has admitted that he won’t return to Ghana alone the next time he visits.

In a tweet, the artiste shared, he said he was going to invite others to make the trip to Ghana together.

“Next time I go to Africa I’m taking my hood! They gotta see Ghana!!!!,” his tweet of January 20, 2023 read.

In the widely criticised Jubilee House video he has since apologized for, Meek Mill was captured rapping in many locations within the presidency, including the facade, key hallways, the main conference hall (at a spot just behind the public lectern), and in a sitting area.

His action got many netizens enraged about what they saw as disrespect to the presidency while citing ethical and security concerns.

Major Twitter influencers in particular have drawn criticism from the public for permitting such sensitive locations to be recorded for a music video.

Meek Mill later issued an apology to Ghanaians for the video brouhaha that pushed his name into the social media trends.

Founder and Leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Prophet Nicholas Osei popularly known as Kumchacha has stated that American rapper Meek Mill who shot a music video at the Jubilee House of Ghana took advantage of the country’s weak security system.

Making his submission in an interview with Onua FM monitored by GhanaWeb, the man of God claimed that Meek Mill would not have been able to film the music video in the Jubilee house if the nation’s security apparatus had been in full effect.

“Do you know that the system is weak? if the system is not weak how can a guy from America go and sing at the Jubilee House? That guy shouldn’t even be blamed. I learnt people were blaming him but he shouldn’t be blamed. Because when he came to Ghana, he realized the weak security system and took advantage of it. So, Meek Mill came to Ghana and did this, how?” he questioned.

Meek Mill who performed at the Afrochella event in Accra, was later spotted with the President at the Jubilee House together with Akufo-Addo’s daughter who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Creative Arts Council.

Ghanaians expressed outrage after the American rapper released a video of a song he shot at the Jubilee House.

The video saw portions of the Presidency, from the frontage, through the main corridors, in the main conference hall, and behind the presidential lectern causing Ghanaians to fume, describing the art as a denigration of the seat.

He later deleted the video and subsequently apologised saying he never meant to insult Ghanaians.

Meek’s tweet came shortly after Idris seemingly confirmed he and Harvey were an item. “I got Lori Harvey on my wish list/That’s the only thing I want for Christmas,” he rapped in the original version.

Renovate tourist sites to make Ghana center for attraction – John Dumelo

Actor, farmer, and politician, John Dumelo has called on the government of Ghana to work towards the renovation of tourist sites in the country to make it a hub for tourism in Africa.

According to John Dumelo, Ghana arguably has become the choicest place of destination for most persons in the diaspora to be in Africa during festive
periods due to the many music concerts and festivals that are organized, however, he believes that visits to Ghana should not only be in December but should be all year round.

The actor believes this can be achieved if government renovates old tourist sites, builds new ones, and creates policies to empower the tourism industry.

If accomplished, John Dumelo says Ghana would become the hub of tourism in Africa and a place foreigners would want to visit at all times.

“Gradually Ghana is becoming the destination for Dec vacations bc of numerous music festivals and entertainment events. Now let’s try and focus on rehabilitating the old tourist sites and build new world-class ones so we can get more tourists all year round. This is our time!,” the actor wrote this one his official page on micro-blogging application, Twitter.

John Dumelo was recently in the news for predicting that the Cedi which was then appreciating would perform poorly against the US dollar in 2023.

According to Mr Dumelo, this is so because import-driven companies have already secured their stock for Christmas and no longer need the dollar to import more stuff.

“$$ will keep coming down in the next few weeks. Reason: 1. Importers don’t need $$ now, they have enough goods for the Xmas period. 2. $$ are in the system due to Xmas visitors,” he tweeted.

  • Meek Mill Pardoned by Pennsylvania Governor

Meek Mill Pardoned by Pennsylvania Governor

Meek Mill has secured a pardon.

The 35-year-old—born Robert Rihmeek Williams—announced the big news via Instagram on Thursday, nearly 15 years after he was convicted of drug- and weapons-related charges. The move serves as an act of forgiveness for certain criminal convictions, and allows the related offenses to be expunged from his criminal record.

“Thankyall 🥲 I’m only gone do more for my community on god!” Meek captioned a photo of the declaration signed by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.

According to Wolf’s office, Meek was among 369 individuals who received a pardon in Pennsylvania this week. Gov. Wolf has issued a total of 2,540 pardons since taking office in 2015, marking the most of any governor in Pennsylvania history.

“I have taken this process very seriously—reviewing and giving careful thought to each and every one of these 2,540 pardons and the lives they will impact,” said the governor, who will leave office on Jan. 17. “Every single one of the Pennsylvanians who made it through the process truly deserves their second chance, and it’s been my honor to grant it. A record prevents positive forward motion in a person’s life and can spark a repetitive cycle of defeat. I firmly believe that with restored rights, pardoned Pennsylvanians prove themselves by stepping up and giving back to our communities.”

Over the past several years, Meek has become a leading figure in the fight for criminal justice reform, as his own legal battle sparked public outcry and nationwide protests. In 2017, the Dream Chasers boss was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison for probation violations, a sentence that was widely criticized as unjust and heavy-handed.

Presiding Judge Genece Brinkley, was accused of having a personal vendetta against Meek and demonstrating inappropriate behavior throughout his case. Meek’s team claimed Brinkley had asked Meek to write a song about her, urged him to change managers, and even checked up on him as he was doing community service.

Brinkley was transferred to civil court last year, after court officials expressed concerns over her ethics and work management. The judge went on to file a racial and gender discrimination lawsuit, as well as a petition to reverse the transfer, claiming it raised “unwarranted suspicions about [her] integrity and performance.”

In addition to fighting for criminal justice reform, Meek has spent the last year giving back to his community. Earlier this week, the rapper announced he, Kevin Hart, and Michael Rubin collectively donated $7 million to Philadelphia-area schools.

  • Meek Mill saga an embarrassment to Akufo-Addo, Ghana – Anyidoho booms

Meek Mill saga an embarrassment to Akufo-Addo, Ghana – Anyidoho booms

Former presidential spokesman, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has commented on the ragig debate on the controversial filming of footage from the Jubilee House by American rapper Meek Mill late last year.

Anyidoho described the episode as an embarrassment for the president and the nation at large and blamed the faux pas on officials at the presidency who should have enforced necessary protocols for visitors at the Jubilee House.

Meek Mill visited the presidency, after his performance at the Afro Nation concert in Accra, meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the insistence of his daughter, Gyankroma.

Barely a week after his return to the States, the rapper released a promo to an upcoming video which contained footage from areas filmed outside and within the Jubilee House.

The video attracted massive backlash on the presidency and government at large, with critics on traditional and social media questioning the moral and security implications of same.

“Someone slept on their job and has created an embarrassment for the president and the country as a whole.

“For example, from what I saw, the guy was standing behind the presidential lectern.. and the Coat of Arms, which is usually for the exclusive use of the president, is in front of it. Who gave him that opportunity?” Anyidoho asked.

GhanaWeb checks show that the lectern Mill stood behind was that of “THE PRESIDENCY – REPUBLIC OF GHANA” which is used by all guests to the presidency. The president exclusively used one with the label “PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA.”

Anyidoho further explained that from his understanding of the viral clip, the rapper must have completed his formal engagement with the president before engaging in the other acts that should not have happened.

“The president must have already met him in his visitors or conference room and this boy descends and someone overlooks and allows him to do what he did,” Anyidoho stated on Accra-based Okay FM (January 10, 2023).

The rapper issued an apology to Ghanaians and the presidency after footage of the Jubilee House was contained in a video he was set to release.

He deleted the promo he had posted on Instagram and absolved the presidency of knowing that he was taking videos during his visit to the place.

Government is under fire to explain how the highest security installation in the country suffered such a breach.

Presidency didn’t know Meek Mill was shooting a video at Jubilee House – Diaspora Affairs Director

The Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President has dispelled claims that the Presidency gave permission for American Rapper, Meek Mill to shoot a video at the Jubilee House.

Akwasi Awua Ababio in an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio said officials at the Jubilee House were unaware that the ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ hitmaker was shooting visuals when he visited the President.

Presidency didn't know Meek Mill was shooting a video at Jubilee House - Diaspora Affairs Director

The Office of the President and the American Rapper were heavily criticised over the weekend after a video published by the latter had various shots from the seat of government.

Although Meek Mill later deleted the said video, many Ghanaians feared that the security of the Jubilee House had been breached.

Clarifying the issue, Mr Ababio said government has learned a bitter lesson from the incident.

“I think that from this Meek Mill video issue, lessons should be learned, because while we do not want to stop Africans from the diaspora from coming here, there must be an understanding of limitations.

Presidency didn't know Meek Mill was shooting a video at Jubilee House - Diaspora Affairs Director

“I would say certainly for those who were around at that time, they didn’t know that it was being shot,” he said.

Mr Ababio further added, “The fact is that what makes Ghana so attractive is the fact that we have so much diversity and tolerance here; in respect to religion and belief and especially security.”

Meek Mill has since apologised to the people of Ghana for the video footage that he shot at Jubilee House on December 30, 2022.

  • Nana Aba Anamoah on Meek Mill’s video: I can bet my last coin that Akufo-Addo knew nothing about it

Nana Aba Anamoah on Meek Mill’s video: I can bet my last coin that Akufo-Addo knew nothing about it

Popular media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has expressed her opinions on the Meek Mill saga, which has recently been a hot topic in the media.

Nana Aba contends that she is absolutely certain that the president was completely unaware of Meek Mill’s video shoot at the Jubilee House.

Following the release of Meek Mill’s video, in which he was seen getting cosy at some unauthorised locations at the Jubilee House, officials at the presidency, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, have experienced intense backlash on social media.

In the said video, the American rapper was spotted at different locations at the Jubilee House, from the frontage, through the main corridors, in the main conference hall, at a point positioned behind the presidential podium, and later in a sitting area rapping.

Some individuals who have been appalled by the development have since described it as a complete desecration of the seat of the president.

Others have launched a series of attacks on the president for enabling the act, while intermittently firing shots at Meek Mill.

But Nana Aba thinks that the government should be given some slack.

Wading into the discussion on Twitter, the popular broadcaster strongly believes that Meek Mill took those shots at the blind side of the presidency.

“I can bet my last coin that the President knew absolutely nothing about that shoot,” she wrote.

She did, however, insist that, while Meek Mill’s act is repugnant, the people who authorized it would not face any consequences.

“I however, doubt anything will happen to whoever authorized it (if they decide to investigate how Meek Mill desecrated the Jubilee House that way),” she added.

  • Meek Mill’s video wasn’t sanctioned by the presidency – NPP

Meek Mill’s video wasn’t sanctioned by the presidency – NPP

The Director of Communications of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has said the music video shot by American rapper Meek Mill at the Jubilee House was not sanctioned by the Presidency.

”Meek Mill’s music video was not sanctioned by the Presidency. Its permission was not sought whatsoever for the use of the video. The musician has realized his indiscretion, apologised & taken down the video,” Mr Ahiagba explained in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, Meek Mill has apologised for his controversial music video capturing parts of Ghana’s seat of government.

Since the video surfaced on social media, Sunday, January 8, 2023, citizens and politicians have criticised the Ghanaian government, personnel at the presidency and the artiste for the “desecration” and breach of security protocol.

Mill deleted the viral video on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Also in a series of tweets Monday evening, the Philadelphia rap star apologised in no equivocal terms.

“To the people of Ghana,” he began, “No video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana…”

“The fastest way to make connection[s] is [through] music and I wanted to do that with displaying [my] art…,” he explained.

“I’m in my 30’s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle [culture] here,” he revealed.

“My apologies to the people [in case of] any disrespect!” he stressed in the follow-up tweet.

An entrepreneur passionate about bridging the gap between Blacks in Africa and those in the diaspora, especially in America, he highlighted that: “We [are] still gonna push to [create] the connection between Black people in America and Africa… What I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see [what’s] coming soon!”

“My apologies to the [presidential] office also!” he noted.

Meek Mill responding to a food blogger by name Zubaida A-Rahman saying he is “not the one everyone’s mad at,” explained the officials at the presidential palace that fateful day when the video was taken did not know “it was [a] video footage when we asked to shoot. [What we used was] a small camera and one kid [shot it].”

Furthermore, he stated the reason behind the footage. He and his crew, according to him, were amazed at the edifice. Prior, they did not know such architectural and developmental advancements existed in these parts.

“In America,” he said, “We didn’t know this existed and [we were] excited to show [it to others] because they don’t show Ghana on our [American] media much!”

“I’ll take responsibility for my mistake!” the Dream Chasers founder stated, adding it was “not intentional” to dishonour the apex office and Ghana.

The 35-year-old again was categorical in saying he desires no detrimental misunderstanding between Black communities on the continent and beyond. He sees the current controversial situation as a learning curve.

“I’m just not here for [anymore] separation of anything Black… We [are] already separated [by land and history] enough and don’t understand each other’s cultures… Let’s use this [situation] to help fix that and not [be] more judgement[al] towards each other!” he tweeted.

  • What Shatta Wale said after Meek Mill apologised to Ghanaians

What Shatta Wale said after Meek Mill apologised to Ghanaians

Ghanaian dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, is among the few who have risen to the defense of American rapper Meek Mill, who came under attack for ‘disrespecting’ the Jubilee House in his music video shoot at the presidency.

Earlier this week, Meek, who was in Ghana for a performance in December 2022, published a video that captured him at the residence and office of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after photos of his meeting with Ghana’s leader circulated on social media.

The scenes sparked outrage on social media, with many questioning his audacity to freely shoot a video at the presidential palace in Accra.

A section of the public called for the heads of those who permitted him to shoot what has been described as a distasteful video, but on the account of Meek Mill, it was done on the blindside of authorities.

“I don’t think they knew it was video footage when we asked to shoot; its a small camera and one kid,” parts of his tweet dated January 9 read.

In the rapper’s public apology to Ghanaians and the Office of the President, he wrote: “My apologies to the people if any disrespect! We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa … What I’m trying to do is more than a video, and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the office also!”

Ghana’s famous singer, Shatta Wale, was on a rant on social media for the unwarranted attack on Meek Mill, which he believes pushed him to tender an apology to citizens.

Shatta said to critics on Monday, “The apology you want Meek Mill has done… Now leave your phone and go work …your rent catch .”

In a separate tweet, the singer, who described Ghana as a village, added: “Meek Mill in fact, thank you for making the world see how beautiful and welcoming our country is …We love you including our president We are all your fans Forget everybody and do your ting!”

“I know what you want, The president should come and explain so you will use that to chop banku.”

How we wrongly procured Jubilee House footage – Meek Mill explains

In three tweets posted on January 9, 2023; American rapper Meek Mill explained the circumstances around which he filmed footage in and around the Jubilee House.

Government had been under incessant pressure to address how the rapper filmed footage when he visited President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in December 2022 when he was in town for the Afro Nation concert.

Mill apologized to Ghanaians and to the presidency for the manner in which a music video promo he had put together had generated controversy and heavy social media backlash.

He posted the video on his Instagram reel but switched to Twitter to render his apology.

“To the people of Ghana no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana …. The fastest way to make connection is thru music and I wanted to do that with displaying art … im in my 30’s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle here,” his first apology tweet read.

He followed it up with another apology, again to the Ghanaian people but also the presidency:

“My apologies to the people if any disrespect! We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa … what I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the the office also!” it read.

When a Ghanaian blogger tweeted that the outrage was not targeted at him per se but at the presidency, he explained how he procured the footage.

“I don’t think they knew it was video footage when we asked to shoot its a small camera and one kid … in America we didn’t know this existed and was excited to show because they don’t show Ghana on our media much! So I’ll take responsibility for my mistake! Not intentional,” he added.

  • Ghanaians should accept Meek Mill’s sincere apology – Ablakwa

Ghanaians should accept Meek Mill’s sincere apology – Ablakwa

According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu, there is justification to assume that American rapper Meek Mill’s apology to Ghanaians is genuine.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, the MP has called on Ghanaians to forgive the rapper, who has been under heavy criticism for sharing snippets of a music video with shots from Ghana’s presidency.

“It does appear Meek Mill’s multiple apologies to Ghanaians are quite sincere & should be accepted by all,” he wrote.

The rapper, following widespread criticism coupled with allegations of him desecrating the Jubilee House, issued an apology to Ghanaians, saying he never meant to disrespect the country or the presidency.

“To the people of Ghana no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana …. The fastest way to make connection is thru music and I wanted to do that with displaying art … im in my 30’s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle here,” his first apology shared in a series of tweets on Monday, January 9, 2023 said.

“My apologies to the people if any disrespect! We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa … what I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the the office also!” it read.

“I don’t think they knew it was video footage when we asked to shoot its a small camera and one kid … in America we didn’t know this existed and was excited to show because they don’t show Ghana on our media much! So I’ll take responsibility for my mistake! Not intentional,” he added.

Despite asking that the rapper be forgiven for his gaffe, Mr. Ablakwa, who has asked for a probe into the incident and appropriate sanctions to be applied to culpable individuals, said the admission by Meek Mill has further justified his call.

“My only serious reservation, however, is his claim that he engaged in all that deplorable desecration & major security breach on the blind side of officials.

“Is the President safe? Is Ghana safe?” he questioned.

“This has, without a scintilla of doubt, further justified earlier demands for urgent investigations & severe sanctions,” the opposition MP added.

Meek Mill shared the video on his Instagram page after he visited the presidency following his recent trip to Ghana.

In the video shared by the rapper on his Instagram page, Meek Mill is captured in different places at the presidency from the frontage, through the main corridors, in the main conference hall—at a point positioned behind the presidential lectern—and later in a sitting area rapping.

His critics have cited security and moral concerns about the rapper’s actions.

Meanwhile, Meek Mill has since deleted the video, which has gone viral on social media.

Never Aso Rock! – Nigerians drag Ghana over Meek Mill’s access to Jubilee House

After it was revealed that American rapper Meek Mill had gotten entry to the Jubilee House, had the privilege of seeing the president, and also had the opportunity to make some of a music video, Nigerians on Twitter had a field day making fun of Ghanaians.

Meek Mill can’t try that in the White House. E nor fit try am for Aso Rock if he eventually visit naija,” a tweep with the handle @Olise_Emmanuel posted.

Aso Rock is the equivalent of Jubilee House, it is Nigeria’s presidential villa as they call it and most Nigerians are without a shred of doubt that Meek Mill will be lucky to be allowed in the Villa in the first place.

This is the latest installment in the Ghana versus Nigeria social media banter which in recent times is rooted on which country has the best jollof rice.

Ghana going back to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Twitter choosing to open its offices in Ghana are some other incidents that have triggered banter on especially Twitter.

According to him, Meek Mill, a fellow black man, whose visit to the country somewhat benefited the ‘Year of Return’ initiative, shouldn’t be faulted if he took a couple of shots in the county to flaunt.

He has therefore described all those who have criticized the American rapper as villagers.

“You wan go America go take pictures for White House. You say “year of return “and your own black brother come shoot video as he return home you bore ..You are a villager trust me !!!” he wrote on Twitter.

  • Rapper Meek Mill pays bail for 20 incarcerated women

Rapper Meek Mill has paid bail for 20 women so that they can spend the holidays at home, according to the REFORM Alliance, an organization he launched in 2019 alongside Jay-Z.

The women were incarcerated at Riverside Correctional Facility in Philadelphia and were unable to afford bail, according to an Instagram post from the REFORM Alliance.

Five of the women were released on Saturday, and 15 more will be released in the coming week, says the nonprofit. Each woman will also receive a gift card “to purchase groceries or gifts for the holidays.”

Meek Mill said the donation was informed by his own personal experience with the criminal justice system.

“It was devastating for me to be away from my son during the holidays when I was incarcerated, so I understand what these women and their families are going through,” said the rapper in another Instagram post from the REFORM Alliance.

“For families impacted by the criminal justice system, the holidays can be an extremely challenging time,” Meek Mill went on. “No one should have to spend the holidays in jail simply because they can’t afford bail, and no child should be without their parents during this time if we can do something about it.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to help these women be with their families and loved ones during this special time of year.”

Meek Mill launched the REFORM Alliance in 2019 alongside a cadre of other sports and business leaders. The organization “aims to transform probation and parole by changing laws, systems and culture to create real pathways to work and wellbeing” according to its website.

The Philadelphia native has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reforms. An explosive social media movement called #FreeMeekMill started after he was sentenced to two to four years in prison in 2017 for a parole violation. He was freed after spending five months in prison for the violation.

There were a total of 4,546 people incarcerated in Philadelphia prisons as of November 2022, according to data from the Philadelphia government. Around 6.4% of that group are women.

  • Philly judge who sentenced Meek Mill to prison has been transferred to Civil Court

Genece Brinkley, the Pennsylvania judge who sentenced Meek Mill to prison, is facing her own legal battle.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the 66-year-old judge was transferred to civil court this year amid growing concerns about her ethics and work management. Brinkley’s pending criminal cases were reportedly reassigned and subjected to reviews by various lawyers and judges, who allegedly found a pattern of questionable rulings and behavior; these include imposing illegal sentences, allowing sentences to run past their maximum date, and failing to “quickly address cases remanded to her by higher courts.”

Brinkley filed a petition this month to reserve the transfer, saying the reassignment “raises unwarranted suspicions about [her] integrity and performance.”

“The last place that such shenanigans can be allowed is in our courts where integrity must be the hallmark,” she wrote.

The petition, which was submitted to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, came months after Brinkley filed a racial and gender discrimination complaint against Lucretia Clemons and Lisette Shirdan-Harris, two Black supervising judges for the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. Brinkley, who is also Black, declined to provide details about the alleged discrimination, but said it was “based on race, age, and gender.”

Brinkley became a judge in 1993, and won retention elections in 2003 and 2013. Her time on the bench has been widely scrutinized, with many calling her rulings unjust and heavy-handed. That criticism was fueled in 2017, when she slapped Mill with a two-to-four-year prison sentence for probation violations. The sentencing, which stemmed from a decade-old drug and gun conviction, sparked nationwide calls from criminal justice reform.

Mill’s legal team also accused Brinkley of having a personal “vendetta” against the Philly rapper, as she allegedly had ties to his former manager Charlie Mack.

Brinkley reportedly urged Mill to ditch Roc Nation and return to Mack, and also asked Mill to give her a shout-out in one of his songs. Mill rejected both requests.

The women, who were incarcerated at Riverside Correctional Facility in Philadelphia, also received gift cards to buy presents for their families. Five women were released today and will be reunited with their families, with 15 more women to be released in the coming week.

“It was devastating for me to be away from my son during the holidays when I was incarcerated,” Mill said in a press release. “So I understand what these women and their families are going through. No one should have to spend the holidays in jail simply because they can’t afford bail. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help these women be with their families and loved ones during this special time of year.”
