  • MTN Ghana to support Ghanaian xenophobia returnees with GHS20m

MTN Ghana to support Ghanaian xenophobia returnees with GHS20m

Ghanaians returning from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks will receive GH¢20 million in financial support from MTN Ghana. The company’s Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson, disclosed this while speaking to the media on Thursday, August 20.

According to him, MTN Ghana had initially planned to raise GH¢10 million to support the returnees; however, it realised that such an amount would not go a long way in helping the victims. “We will do it. We’ll do it in a big way. We’ll do it in a way that will make more meaning,” he said.

MTN Ghana has dismissed allegations that it supported the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

“I condemn it. I completely dissociate MTN Ghana from it. We have nothing to do with it. One thing that maybe has not been visible is what we have done to support,” he added.

So far, Ghana has lost three individuals to xenophobic attacks in South Africa. A 44-year-old father of three, Bashiru Isaac, was fatally shot in Khayelitsha, while Kojo Antwi was killed in Prieska on July 18.

The second victim, Kojo Antwi was killed in Prieska, Northern Cape Province on July 18. In June, the Foreign Ministry noted that the government has secured 120 job opportunities for one hundred and twenty (120) Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced. The Ministry made the disclosure through a statement on Monday, June 1.

According to the statement, the Ministry noted that as part of efforts to support the reintegration of citizens returning home, Ghanaian business owners have been engaged to provide employment opportunities for the evacuees.

The statement further urged more business owners to support the victims during this difficult time.

“So far, we have secured 120 job opportunities from patriotic Ghanaian business owners. Be part of this noble project. We invite Ghanaian CEOs and entrepreneurs desirous of employing Ghanaians returning from South Africa to contact the Delivery Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the statement added.

As part of efforts to safeguard nationals’ investments in South Africa, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has emphasised that there must be “realistic compensation” should the South African government seek to take over such businesses.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s (SA) Foreign Minister, Ronald Lamola, has stated that the current migration-related challenges will not stand in the way of South Africa-Ghana bilateral relations.

During a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama, SA’s Foreign Minister acknowledged concerns raised by Ghana over reports involving harsh treatment against migrants.

However, he noted that the two countries go way back; thus, parting ways now is not the answer.

“There was an agreement between ourselves and Ghana that the current migration-related challenges will not stand in the way of South Africa-Ghana bilateral relations. It does not impact the Ghana-South Africa bilateral relations because South Africa and Ghana have got long enduring challenges, good friendship and relations.

“All countries have got the right to enforce, it’s within the sovereign state to enforce immigration laws but immigration must be regular, must be orderly, in line with the protocols of the AU, of our own SADC. It should not be a disorder immigration,” he said.

Ronald Lamola is a part of the delegation sent by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Ghana to engage President John Dramani Mahama on measures to address the recurring xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa.

During the meeting, President Mahama expressed concern over the recent attacks and called for a permanent end to such incidents. President Mahama stressed the need to protect the rights and safety of all foreign nationals living in South Africa.

This information was made public by President Mahama when meeting with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssou, at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, July 22.
He added, “On, July 21, President Cyril Ramaphosa sent a delegation to me, and I explained the reason why we need to discuss it. Sometimes these things happen, and we want to sweep them under the carpet, but when we do that, we do not cure what the problem is,” he said.

“I told them that Ghana does not harbour any malice against South Africa, but we are raising it so it gives them the platform to explain what they are doing to the world.”

Our data packages are expensive to foster competition – MTN Ghana

MTN Ghana has addressed the mounting public outcry over the high cost of internet data, which has significantly impacted businesses and sparked widespread discontent on social media.

The telecommunication giant’s response comes amid growing calls for the dissolution of the National Communications Authority (NCA) board, with critics blaming the high data costs and unreliable service on regulatory policies.

During a recent visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer shed light on the reasons behind the pricing structure.

The officer emphasized that regulatory measures, specifically the designation of MTN Ghana as a Significant Market Player (SMP), are aimed at fostering competition within the telecommunications sector.

“I believe the NCA has addressed the subject as to why we have some of the data pricing we have. They have also talked about how low our prices are in the sub-region,” the officer stated.

The designation of MTN Ghana as an SMP mandates the company to maintain higher data prices compared to its competitors. This regulatory decision is intended to level the playing field and stimulate competition among telecom operators in Ghana.

“They also talked about the declaration of MTN Ghana as a significant market player which means that our data prices have to be higher than our competitors,” the officer explained.

The NCA’s strategy is designed to prevent MTN Ghana from leveraging its market dominance to undercut competitors, which could potentially stifle competition and innovation in the sector. By enforcing higher data prices for MTN Ghana, the regulatory body aims to create a more competitive environment that benefits consumers in the long run.

“I think the NCA also explained why we have the data structure the way it is, and that is to improve on competition. Those are some public interest reasons why this is the situation,” the officer added.

Communications Ministry, MTN Ghana celebrate National Girls in ICT Day

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, in partnership with MTN Ghana, recently celebrated National Girls in ICT Day in a grand ceremony that honored a thousand beneficiaries of the Girls-in-ICT training program in the Greater Accra Region.

The event, held at the University of Ghana’s Cedi Conference Centre, featured leading female ICT professionals sharing their experiences and inspiring young girls to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, emphasized the government’s efforts to develop a sustainable financial model with improved training content, aiming to benefit more girls throughout the year.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 5 (Gender Equality).

A notable highlight of the event was the launch of the Ghana Girls in ICT Trust. This Trust aims to create a continuous pipeline of trained and empowered girls and women, fostering a supportive national environment for young women in ICT and STEM fields.

Speaking to journalists, Minister Owusu-Ekuful explained the importance of the Trust in addressing funding challenges. She noted that the Trust would facilitate public-private sector partnerships, attracting more partners to sustain the program.

“Funding has always been a challenge, but with the Trust in place, we can now engage potential donors. Several have shown interest but were previously hesitant due to it being a purely governmental initiative. The Trust, as a public-private partnership, will welcome donor agencies, individuals, and companies as Trustees. This inclusion will allow them to incorporate funding for the Trust into their annual budgets, ensuring a sustainable stream of funding for the project,” said Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, reiterated the government’s commitment to equipping young girls with essential ICT skills to excel in an increasingly technological world.

During the launch, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN, Adwoa Wiafe, revealed that MTN Ghana plans to engage with the Ministry to explore further support for the initiative.

“We understand that the Ministry is transitioning this into a Trust, and we will discuss with the Ministry to understand their plans and determine our future involvement,” said Adwoa Wiafe.

This year’s National Girls in ICT Day included a comprehensive five-day ICT training program for both students and teachers. The event culminated with the top 100 students receiving brand new laptops and laptop bags. The three best-performing students were additionally awarded plaques and cash prizes.

MTN Ghana, a partner of the Ministry since 2021, has invested GH¢15.6 million in the program, contributing to the training of 9,000 girls and 900 teachers in basic ICT skills, including coding, website design, game development, and animation. The initiative has so far reached regions such as North-East, Western-North, Ahafo, Bono-East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, and Greater Accra.

Check out MTN’s ‘Free After 1 Extra’ plan

MTN has introduced the ‘Free After 1 Extra’ service to enhance the customer experience for users on the MTN ‘Free After 1’ call plan.

The original ‘Free After 1’ service, initiated a few years ago, allowed customers to enjoy extended call durations after paying for the first minute of the call.

To subscribe to the ‘Free After 1 Extra’ service, customers can dial *550# and select option 6. This will activate the service, enabling users to have uninterrupted calls for 60 minutes, paying only for the first minute after every 10 minutes of conversation.

Under this new plan, subscribers will be charged for only the first minute of a 10-minute call and can continue the call for up to an hour without any interruptions. The billing system works by charging customers one minute in blocks of 10 minutes.

This improvement addresses a limitation of the previous ‘Free After 1’ plan, which required customers to end the call every 10 minutes.

The Chief Commercial Officer of MTN Ghana, Noel Kojo Ganson, stated that this enhanced plan was introduced in response to customer feedback, aiming to provide greater value and convenience.

“We are confident that the newly introduced, ‘Free After 1 Extra’ service allows customers to stay connected and enjoy uninterrupted calls with their business associates, family, and loved ones.”

“Motivated by our belief that ‘Everybody deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life, we continue to create relevant offers for each customer category to meet their unique needs and preferences.”

MTN continues to drive customer satisfaction by leveraging technology to develop products and services that deliver value. These services include Free After 1 Extra, MTN Pulse Mashup, and MTN Jara amongst others.

Old and new data charges for MTN customers

Starting November 28, 2023, MTN Ghana, the telecommunications giant, has implemented an increase in data charges for its users. Despite the prior announcement of a 15% increase, users have expressed disappointment regarding the substantial rise in their data expenses.

MTN had communicated the price adjustment on November 24, 2023, stating, “Dear Valued Customer, kindly be informed that effective 28th November 2023, prices of MTN products will be revised upwards due to increased operational costs.”

The price hike is anticipated to impact MTN Ghana’s extensive customer base, which witnessed a 12.8% year-over-year growth in mobile subscribers in 2022, reaching 28.6 million.

  • Commercial court rules in favor of GRA in GHS19m tax liability case against MTN Ghana

Commercial court rules in favor of GRA in GHS19m tax liability case against MTN Ghana

The Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra has handed down a verdict in favor of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in a tax liability case amounting to GH¢19 million, filed against the authority by Scancom PLC, the owners of MTN Ghana.

Scancom PLC brought the case to court, contending that GRA had acted arbitrarily and erred in law by imposing the tax liability order on the company for the period spanning January 2014 to December 2017.

In 2020, the Ghana Revenue Authority initiated a comprehensive tax audit on MTN Ghana, covering the period from January 2014 to December 2018. The audit encompassed all aspects of MTN’s business, including Input Value Added Tax claims related to goods and services procured by MTN Ghana, Value Added Tax on services imported by the company, and Input Value Added Tax claims related to office premises constructed by the telecom giant.

MTN Ghana, dissatisfied with the imposed tax liability and asserting that it had fulfilled all its tax obligations, took the matter to court seeking a reversal of the GRA order. The recent ruling has sided with the Ghana Revenue Authority in this legal dispute.

Thus, the company requested the following reliefs:

    a. An order reversing the Respondent’s decision to impose additional Value Added Tax of GHS8,793,598.00 and penalty and interest of GHS10,933,119 on imported services utilized by Appellant for its telecommunication business.

    b. An order reversing the Respondent’s decision to impose additional Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy and National Health Insurance Levy of GHC6,379,483.00 and penalty and interest of GHC2,566,124.00 on imported services utilized by the Appellant for its business.

    c. An order quashing the parts of the Current Tax Assessment relating to the heads “Disputed Assessment”, and overturning the Objection Decision by Respondent as it relates to those parts.

    d. Any other order(s) that the justice of the case requires.

    Judgement

In its ruling, the court presided over by Her Ladyship Justice Afi Agbanu Kudomor on November 9, 2023, said GRA did not err in imposing the tax liability on MTN Ghana.

Below are excerpts of the judgement:

By virtue of the combined effect of the said provision of the Value Added Tax Act, 2013 (Act 870) for imported services, Value Added Tax will not apply only if the imported services were applied in making Taxable supplies (telecommunication business). Value Added Tax will however apply if the imported services were applied in making Exempt supplies (mobile money business).

Respondent was therefore right in applying the definition in section 65 of the Value Added Tax Act, 2013 (Act 870) to the transactions concerned in determining the total cost of imported services and apportioned between the Exempt and Taxable supplies with respect to their contribution to total revenue.

Respondent therefore did not err in law and did not act arbitrarily by imposing Value Added Tax liability on the Appellant for Imported Services for the period January 2014 to December 2017 because of Appellant’s status a Partial Exempt Trader for the period of the assessment.

On the second ground of appeal, it is clear from the provisions of the two statutes as amended that the National Health Insurance (Amendment) Act, 2018 (Act 971) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund Act, 2018 (Act 972) are separate from the Value Added Tax Act 2018 (Act 870).

That, the two laws impose tax on import of service which is not subject to input tax deduction.

The two statutes levy taxes on the import of services, and these taxes are not subject to input tax deduction, regardless of the intended use of the imported service during the specified period.

For the relevant periods in 2018 (from August 2018 to December 2018), the Value Added Tax rate of 12.5% did not apply to the Appellant. However, the Ghana Educational Trust Fund Levy and National Health Insurance Levy, each at a rate of 2.5%, were applicable to the imported services by the Appellant, irrespective of whether these imported services were used to produce Taxable or Exempt supplies.

Therefore, the Respondent did not make any legal error when imposing the National Health Insurance Levy and Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy (along with interest and penalties) on the Appellant for their Imported Services from August 2018 to December 2018, regardless of whether they were applied to Taxable or Exempt services. This is why the present Tax Appeal is unsuccessful. No order is given regarding costs, and each party is responsible for its own costs.

The company is actively working to implement this plan by gradually transitioning to solar energy sources by 2030 and targeting a 50% reduction in its carbon emissions.

To this end, she added in promoting efficiencies; “if we cannot convert to solar at all, what MTN is doing is replacement of outdated facilities to new ones that are more efficient and conserving its water use as much as possible and waste management in all its places of work“. The Chief Corporate Services Sustainability Officer said.

In the realm of societal impact, Mrs. Adwoa Wiafe emphasized that MTN is committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and equality across the spectrum to promote generational equity.

MTN is actively engaging with various segments of society, including traditional leaders, marginalized communities, individuals with physical challenges, and those traditionally underprivileged.

  • MTN Ghana spends over GHS2bn to improve network quality

MTN Ghana spends over GHS2bn to improve network quality

In its mid-year 2023 earnings report, MTN Ghana, the prominent telecommunications company in Ghana, revealed that it allocated more than GHS2 billion towards improving its network and IT infrastructure during the initial half of 2023.

The investment was aimed at enhancing network quality.

CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh, in his comments contained in the report said “Enhancements to the network and IT systems were made possible through an investment of GHS2.2 billion in total capex.”

He noted that MTN grew its 4G coverage to 99.3% of the population and rolled out 156 2G, 159 3G and 156 4G sites in the first half of 2023.

“Capex growth of 97.4% Year-on-Year was driven by acquisition of spectrum licenses, accelerated infrastructure deployment as well as an increase in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS16) lease costs which was driven by inflation-induced escalations on tower lease agreements,” he added.

In line with its obligations to the Government and its agencies, MTN Ghana disclosed that it paid taxes, levies, and governmental agency fees amounting to 48% of its revenue.

Mr Selorm Adadevoh, reiterating the company’s commitment, emphasized that MTN Ghana is a compliant taxpayer and plays a significant role in Ghana’s fiscal and socioeconomic progress. In the first half of 2023, the company contributed GHS2.7 billion in direct and indirect taxes, along with GHS228 million in fees and levies to Governmental agencies.

Selorm Adadevoh assured stakeholders that MTN Ghana will continue investing in platform development, network enhancement, and service improvement to generate value in alignment with its Ambition 2025 strategy.

Regarding potential macroeconomic challenges, he expressed that the company will adopt efficiency measures, ensure liquidity, and exercise disciplined spending to mitigate business impact amid prevailing macroeconomic uncertainties.

Remaining committed to creating shared value, MTN Ghana advanced its social intervention initiatives and achieved significant progress in key projects. The CEO noted the company’s dedication to enhancing the lives of Ghanaians through sustainable socioeconomic interventions.

Notably, MTN Ghana made substantial strides in constructing a 60-bed maternity and neonatal center for the Keta Municipal Hospital and establishing a STEM robotics lab for the Mamfe Girls’ School. Completion and handover of these projects to appropriate authorities are anticipated in the second half of 2023.

MTN Ghana also announced adjustments in its market guidance on business performance over the medium term.

Selorm Adadevoh said “Going into the second half of 2023, we do take cognisance of the possible dampening effect on Ghana’s economy from upward inflationary pressures, risks from Ghana’s debt sustainability and currency volatility. However, based on the effective execution of our business strategy, MTN Ghana has revised its medium-term guidance upwards from low-twenties to high-twenties (in percentage terms) growth in service revenue.”

During the first half of 2023, MTN Ghana achieved a notable 27.9% rise in its profit after tax, amounting to GHS1.77 billion. Additionally, the company witnessed a 29.4% growth in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), totaling GHS3.5 billion. However, there was a slight 1.3 percentage points (pp) decrease in the EBITDA margin, settling at 56.1%.

Selorm Adadevoh attributed this commendable performance to the effective execution of commercial strategies, the pursuit of operational efficiencies, and the creation of shared value for various stakeholders.

These accomplishments were attained even in the face of a challenging macroeconomic landscape experienced in the first half of 2023.

Assemblyman admits to taking Quick Loans to support constituents

Abdul-Jalil Yakubu, the Assemblyman for Tatanaa South Electoral Area – LaNMMA, has called on the government to provide financial payment for assemblymen due to the significant expenses they encounter while serving their respective constituencies.

Abdul Yakubu highlighted the various demands placed on assemblymen, often requiring them to seek quick loans to address pressing needs within their communities.

Speaking in an interview with Andy-Asante Okyere on Radio Univers on June 1, 2023, he revealed the financial challenges faced by assemblymen in fulfilling their roles effectively.

He recounted instances where constituents approached him seeking financial assistance for various needs, including school uniforms, school fees, and basic sustenance for families.

According to him, such demands placed upon assemblymen are substantial and often require immediate attention, resulting in them borrowing quick loans to meet these pressing obligations.

“Andy (host), one day I will invite you over to come to my place and handle my phone for just 30 minutes and see something. I didn’t even know what we called a quick loan. I got to know about quick loans when I became an Assemblyman because sometimes you have to take a quick loan to support your members.

“…but every month, LaNMMA gives us GHS 800, but that money will not even last a week. Assemblymen need to be paid seriously because the things that we spend on, my brother, are not easy. I buy school uniforms for people, sometimes I pay for school fees for people. Someone can come to your house and say that today myself and my family haven’t eaten, so do something.

“But I am happy I have found myself there because it has shaped my personality. I have been able to understand human beings properly…I am telling you, assemblymen need to be paid,” he said.

We’re working on a new Data Zone bundle for customers- MTN

Telecommunication Network MTN Ghana has apologised to customers for limiting its communication on why its Data Zone bundle was suspended.

MTN Ghana effective Wednesday, 5 April 2023, suspended its Data Zone bundle.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 12 April 2023, the telecommunication network explained what necessitated the suspension.

According to the telecommunication services provider, the suspension of its Data Zone bundle “is due to a review of the bundle offer in line with the Significant Market Power (SMP) directives applied to MTN Ghana in June 2020, not to be the lowest priced on any offer in the industry.”

It revealed that: “We are currently engaging and collaborating with the Regulator, as we seek alignment on a revised Data Zone bundle to be reinstated as soon as possible.

“We will notify you in due course of further developments.”

MTN Ghana also reassured “its customers that it would continue to roll out innovative and affordable products and services for the benefit of its cherished customers.”

MTN Ghana announces suspension of Data Zone bundle

Data Zone bundle sales have been halted, according to Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana).
On April 5, 2023, this came into effect.

The business says that this is because the package offer was reviewed in accordance with the Significant Market Power (SMP) directives that were applied to MTN Ghana in June 2020.

According to a public notice, the package offer is not to be the cheapest in the industry.

“We are currently engaging and collaborating with the Regulator, as we seek alignment on a revised Data Zone Bundle to be reinstated as soon as possible,” the notice added.

Members of the general public will be notified “in due course of further developments”.

Following the suspension and the delayed clarification, MTN subscribers took to social media to register their displeasure over the bundles suspension.

MTN Ghana says it deeply regrets the delay in its communication on the matter.

  • Assist rural banks in raising capital through stock purchases — BoG Governor

Assist rural banks in raising capital through stock purchases — BoG Governor

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Addison, has urged the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) to explore the possibility of helping rural and community banks (RCBs) to list on the stock market.

Dr Addison said the GSE’s Ghana Alternative Market (GAM) was an avenue for patient capital and the RCBs could leverage the platform to access funds for expansion.

He, therefore, advised the GSE to collaborate with the ARB Apex Bank Limited, the mini central bank for the community-based lenders, on how best they can support the institutions to float shares in return for long-term capital.

Dr Addison made the call when the Managing Director of the GSE, Abena Amoah, led a five-member delegation from the bourse to pay a courtesy call on him.

The meeting was for Ms Abena Amoah, who was appointed the first female of the GSE in November last year, to introduce herself to the central bank’s management.

The Managing Director (MD) of the GSE was accompanied by the acting Deputy MD, Frank Berle; the Head of the Ghana Fixed Income Market, Augustine Simons; the Head of Strategy & International Relations, Diana Okine and the Head of Marketing & Public Relations, Jerry Boachie-Danquah.

The BoG Governor received the delegation in the company of the First Deputy Governor, Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, and some directors of the bank’s departments.

The BoG Governor, congratulated Ms Amoah on her appointment and further expressed confidence in her ability to ensure a seamless transition from her predecessor, given her experience in the sector.

Dr Addison said the outlook for the economy remained positive and urged the GSE management to continue to work with relevant stakeholders to help create a robust economy to help improve the fortunes of the market.

He noted that the DDEP that was concluded in January was to facilitate a fiscal consolidation exercise meant to achieve macroeconomic stability and sustainable growth.

The Governor further stated that the private sector had a key role to play in the transformation of the economy and that private sector investment must lead with the state providing an enabling environment.

For her part, Ms Amoah expressed delight about the warm reception and commended the Governor for his leadership, which she said had positively impacted the financial sector.

On the stock exchange, the MD indicated that although the Ghana Composite Index declined by 13 per cent last year, the market recorded its largest trading value of about GH¢1.3 billion.

This, she said, was attributed to MTN Ghana floating more of its shares on the stock exchange.

The MD added that about GH¢230 billion was traded in fixed income market.

She informed the governor that in 2022, GSE was admitted as a full member of the World Federation of Stock Exchangers, placing the Accra bourse at par with the major players in the global stock exchange space.

    Impact of DDEP

Ms Amoah said the DDEP, which was undertaken by the government as a condition precedent to the country’s entry into the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, had eroded investor confidence in the country.

To bolster investor confidence, the MD highlighted the need for increased financial literacy engagements, availability of sufficient investment information and the diversification of products on the market.

On the foreign exchange market, Ms Amoah said it was the intention of GSE to liaise with the central bank and other stakeholders to form a committee for the formalisation of the foreign exchange market.

  • MTN profit margin increases

    MTN profit margin increases

MTN Ghana’s financial performance results for 2022 indicate that the company has developed the ability to defy gravity.

In a year when macroeconomic headwinds gathered strength over Ghana’s economy, sending business costs through the roof and dragging effective consumer demand through the floor, MTN still delivered a 28 per cent increase in service revenue to GH¢9.9 billion and an even stronger 30.9 per cent increase in Earnings Before Interest, Tax Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA).

This has enabled pre-tax profits to climb to GH¢4.087 billion, up from GH¢2, 849 billion in the previous year. Similarly profit after tax rose from GH¢2.001 billion in 2021 to GH¢2,856 billion last year.

    MTN 2022 turbulence

The company’s shareholders will be enthused; at a time that long-term high interest rates have dulled demand for equities, thereby stifling capital gains on shareholdings, MTN Ghana continues to deliver dividends that rank among the most competitive on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

Beyond the company’s sustained extraordinary profitability, it also offers a very generous dividend payout policy.

For 2022, the Board of Directors have proposed to pay out 70.6 per cent of its profit after tax as dividends and this translates to a final dividend per share of 16.4 pesewas per share, up 42.65 per cent over the dividend per share paid in 2021.

    Sheer prudence

But just as important is the sheer prudence with which the company is managed as a growing corporate entity. Crucially, the company gets most of its revenues on cash basis – indeed most of it comes from pre-payments by customers – and added to the sheer immensity of its business volumes, which makes it a cash cow.

Consequently, while the sharp rise in financing costs resulting from long-term record high interest rates and the effect of sharp cedi depreciation led to a 6.9 per cent increase in finance costs – the extent of this rise curbed by efficient management of liabilities – finance income grew by 161.3 per cent on gains from the investment of surplus cash in call and fixed term deposits.

The net result was a 26.5 per cent year-on-year decline in net financing cost which was pivotal in achieving a 42 75 increase in after tax profit.

But most crucial of all is MTN Ghana’s huge profit margins, the result of heavy capital investments in infrastructure.

This is supported by exemplary prudence in operating cost control. Indeed, it is instructive that the growth in total costs of 25.35 in 2022 was significantly lower than the average monthly inflation rate of 31.5 per cent. This supported growth in EBITDA of 30.9 per cent in 2022.

In effect therefore, more than half of MTN Ghana’s revenues translate into profit before the deduction of interest costs, taxation, depreciation and debt amortisation.

Those revenues are well diversified and so is their growth, which means that the company’s profitability and growth in profits looks to be secure going forward.

This is because of the underlying strength of MTN’s business which continues to attract more and more customers by the year, most of whom are willing to spend more on its products and services by the year as well.

Total revenue earned by MTN Ghana in 2022 amounted to a little over GH¢9.916 billion, up 28.4 per cent over the GH¢7.723 billion generated in the previous year.

Most of this was in the form of service revenue which grew by 28.3 per cent in 2022 to reach GH¢9.880 billion, – up from GH¢7.701 billion in 2021 – supported by good subscriber management amid the national subscriber re-registration programme, increased investment in the network and the diligent execution of commercial initiatives in voice, data and Mobile Money services.

Last year, the company added 3.3 million more subscribers to its customer base, which consequently increased by 12.8 per cent to reach 28.6 million. This was achieved on the back of GH¢2.1 billion in capital expenditure made by the company to ensure that the entire subscriber base enjoyed an excellent service experience, thereby enticing them to use more services and thus spend more money. This was a quantum leap in capital expenditure of 44.4 per cent, which was GH¢1.485 billion in 2021.

Consequently, voice revenue grew by 24.5 per cent to GH¢3.3 billion. However, even this translated to a marginal decline in the contribution of voice revenue to overall service revenue as the other sources of revenue grew even faster; the contribution of voice revenue fell to 33.1 per cent from 34.15 per cent as of the end of 2021.

Data revenue grew fastest, by 39.8 per cent to GH¢3.9 billion, driven by an 8.3 per cent increase in the number of data users to 13.5 million and a 46.65 increase in data traffic. Consequently the contribution of data revenue to overall service revenue increased from 36.05 in 2021 to 39.2 per cent last year.

    MoMo and e-levy

Even though MoMo revenues suffered from the implementation of the controversial e-levy in 2022, MTN’s expansion of its MoMo ecosystem – by growing active MoMo merchants by 4.8 per cent and agents by 17.2 per cent – and the launch of a MoMo business app and continued expansion of advanced service offerings  (such as retail merchants payments, micro-loans, micro-insurance and international remittances) combined to increase active MoMo users by 15.0 per cent to 12.7 million, which in turn drove an 11.6 per cent growth in MoMo revenue to GH¢1.9 billion, although its contribution to overall service revenue still declined from 22.5 per cent to 19.6 per cent.

However, digital revenue declined by 18.8 per cent to GH¢144 million due to a 15.9 per cent decrease in the number of active subscribers as the company sought to rationalise its service portfolio. Consequently the contribution of digital service revenue to total service revenue declined from 2.3 per cent to 1.5 per cent.

    Financing cost

With financing costs expected to remain high through 2023, MTN Ghana is in customary fashion, thinking outside of the box. While determined to continue offering shareholders generous dividend payouts, it also realises the growing need to use internally generated cash flow to finance its expansion.

Consequently the company is considering – subject to its obtaining the relevant regulatory approvals – offering shareholders the choice of cash or extra shares as the form of dividend payment for the 2022 financial year.

This would allow shareholders who want liquidity to have it, but would at the same time enable it to reinvest capital that would otherwise have been used as cash dividend pay outs to shareholders willing to reinvest their dividend income.

This is yet another illustration of how MTN Ghana uses innovation to stay ahead of the market and stay at the top of its industry to the benefit of all its various stakeholder segments. Not just innovation in the use of technology to design and deliver products and services; but also in the financial strategies and models it deploys.

Expect its shareholders to embrace such innovative offerings with the same enthusiasm that its subscribers embrace its products and service offerings.

  • MTN stock increases following GRA’s back-tax truce

MTN stock increases following GRA’s back-tax truce

Following an official announcement that the GH8.2 billion back tax liability lawsuit brought against the telco by Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been dropped, investors have rallied around the stock of telecom giant MTN Ghana.

Following the case’s dismissal, MTN’s share price increased 7.3 percent, rising from GH0.82 at the end of January to GH0.88 at the start of the second trading week in February.
The increase in share value resulted in a market capitalization gain of GH738,000,000.

The GRA had faulted the telco for under-declaring its revenues by as much as 30 percent in the five-year period spanning between 2014 and 2018, resulting in penalties and charges.

Subsequently, MTN registered its disagreement with the assessment made by the GRA – disputing both its accuracy and the methodology applied during the audit process – adding that the taxes owed had already been paid during the period in question and it would challenge penalties imposed by the Authority.

Following extensive engagements between both parties, the case was dismissed on Friday, February 3, 2023 – with the company’s share price reacting positively at the beginning of this week.

Commenting on MTN’s performance, a senior analyst at UMB Brokers, Kofi Busia Kyei, said the development was not unexpected as the market is maturing and reacting quicker to available information.

He added that despite the general investor unease MTN remains an attractive stock, and news that an action which could impact its profitability has been resolved will inevitably result in positive market movements.

“The figure in question was quite substantial whether we looked at it in cedi or dollar terms, and investors were always going to react. Similarly, news that the case had been resolved was well-received by the market, and that is what we have seen in the price movement,” explained Mr. Kyei, who doubles as Executive Director of the Young Investors Network.

If successful, the GRA case would have seen MTN pay more than the GH¢7.7billion and GH¢2billion it made in revenue and post-tax profit respectively in 2021 – and more than 10 times the GH¢767million the telco reported as profit-after-tax for the first nine months of 2022.

Despite the wider macro-economic concerns and initially-feared impact of the E-levy on MTN’s performance, it exceeded expectations in its last audited results – quarter-three in 2022 – with revenue hitting GH¢1.41billion and GH¢4.09billion for the quarter and first nine months of 2022 respectively, due to robust data and voice revenue growth.

Over the past three months, MTN has been the most actively traded stock on the GSE with a total volume of 29.7 million shares worth GH¢26.1million. On average, 471,702 shares have been traded per session; with a peak of 13.1 million on December 23 and a low of 100 on January 10, official data show.

Despite its unit share price being 20.7 percent lower than the GH¢1.08 recorded a year ago, MTN’s stock has appreciated by 10 percent in the last six months.

  • MTN Ghana disputes $773m tax liability imposed by GRA

MTN Ghana disputes $773m tax liability imposed by GRA

CEO of MTN Ghana Mr. Selorm Adadevoh delivering a speech during the launch of MTN Bright Scholarship Reloaded

MTN Ghana is strongly disputing an alleged tax infringement placed on the company by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) between 2014 and 2018.

According to the leading telecom firm, it is a tax-compliant corporate citizen and the tax liability notice of GH¢8,209,603,842.14 (US$773 million) issued against it by the GRA is unacceptable.

The assessment of ¢8,209,603,842.14 includes penalties and interest charges.

“In this regard, from the base component of the assessment (that is, excluding penalties and interest), on MTN Ghana’s analysis, the GRA infers that MTN Ghana under declared its revenue by more than approximately 30% over the 5-year period 2014 to 2018”, it said in a statement.

“The GRA audited MTN Ghana for the period 2014-2018, using a third-party consultant as well as a new methodology based on call data records (CDR), recharges, and other data. MTN Ghana strongly disputes the accuracy and basis of the Assessment, including the methodology used in conducting the audit. MTN Ghana believes that taxes due have been paid during the period under assessment”, it explained.

MTN Ghana believed the taxes due have been paid during the period under assessment.

The statement further said MTN Group and MTN Ghana will continue to engage with the relevant authorities on this matter and MTN remains resolute that MTN Ghana is a tax compliant corporate citizen.

Again, it said MTN Ghana would like to further assure its shareholders and other stakeholders that MTN Ghana is a responsible business with an absolute commitment to transparency, good corporate governance, and compliance.

MTN Ghana one of largest taxpayers in Ghana

MTN Ghana is one of the largest private sector taxpayers in Ghana, having been recognized on numerous occasions for its support of the GRA’s revenue mobilization efforts.

The GRA has also satisfactorily concluded multiple tax assessments on MTN Ghana over many years and presented MTN Ghana with various taxpayer awards in recognition of its contribution to the fiscal development of the country.

MTN Ghana thanked the GRA for its support throughout the process, especially allowing us a temporary withdrawal of the Notice of Assessment in a bid to resolve this matter in an amicable manner.

    Background

In 2019, the GRA commenced an audit of MTN Ghana with the objective to give assurance on the reliability and completeness of revenues declared by MTN Ghana for the purpose of tax computation for the period 2014-2018.

The GRA had not issued MTN Ghana with any prior guidelines and standards relating to the new CDR sequence-based methodology used for the audit.

In May 2021, after consultations and discussions between MTN Ghana, MTN Group, the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Ghana and the GRA, the parties agreed to an independent review by a global professional services firm.

MTN Ghana has fully cooperated in this independent review, which was commissioned by the GRA in September 2021. The independent review found that it was unable to support the conclusions reached by the GRA’s third-party consultants as the basis for the assessment.

  • Koforidua: ‘Irresponsible men’ abandon their wives after giving birth – Midwife cries out

The Eastern Regional midwife in charge of the Neonatal unit at the Koforidua Regional Hospital, Mrs. Joana Yorke Amoah has revealed that many men abandon their wives in the hospital after delivery.

According to her, the men take the decision to leave their wives at the unit over their inability to meet the bill conditions.

She revealed that because most pregnant women attend the Neonatal unit financially unprepared, they are unable to foot the bill therefore such cases are referred to social welfare to contact their family members to settle their debts.

Mrs. Joana Yorke Amoah said this when MTN Ghana as part of its annual Yello Care initiative donated some hampers to support some new babies born on Christmas day at the Regional Hospital.

“Some of them have insurance, it’s just a few who don’t have, and sometimes too they are not well prepared when you ask if the money that they are having is not enough.

“They cannot foot the bills so sometimes we encourage them to deposit what they have then we later call the family members to come and pay the rest for them.

“With the financial aspect their husbands don’t show up, they just come and dump them here and then they leave them, we take their numbers and call them and they don’t respond to us,” she disclosed.

She said 9 new babies were born on the Christmas Day (25th of December) this year out of which six women were taken through a Cesarean Section while the other three delivered on their own.

Mr. Mohammed Haruna Yamba, who led the MTN Team noted that the donation forms part of their annual ritual that MTN always do just to welcome the newborn babies.

He explained that MTN Ghana Yello Care is supporting 25 babies born on Christmas day and their mothers only in the region with hampers which consist of soaps, diapers, detergents, detail as well as airtime and other basic needs necessary to take care of newborn babies.

The Yello Care team further went to Koforidua SDA Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital and distributed hampers to some mothers and babies born on Christmas day.

  • Parent of beneficiary applauds MTN for changing lives

A parent of one of the beneficiaries of the MTN Bright Scholarship Awards, has paid glowing tribute to MTN Ghana for the positive impact it is making in the lives of needy students across the country.

Madam Afia Agyeiwaa, a 52-year-old widow whose daughter is pursuing Publishing Studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology could not help but praised MTN during a ceremony to award beneficiaries in Kumasi.

“I am a tomato seller and the little I make is not enough to support my daughter’s education so, the intervention by MTN is timely and a huge relief from the financial burden on my shoulders,” an emotional but proud mother stated.

She said she could not thank MTN enough for bringing hope to her daughter and many others who had been struggling to stay in school.

“It is my prayer that your business will continue to grow so that you can continue to help more deserving students like my daughter to stay in school, she prayed.

Dubbed, “MTN Bright Scholarship Reloaded”, the initiative seeks to support brilliant but needy tertiary students in public tertiary institutions across all 16 regions with an enhanced package targeting 300 students over the next three years.

The scholarship would cover tuition, accommodation, a stipend of GHC 1,150.00 per semester and a laptop to facilitate learning.

Fifty of the 100 beneficiaries for this year received their packages at a ceremony held at the Law Faculty of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.

Mr Samuel Koranteng, a Board Member of MTN Foundation, said the Foundation was convinced that education was one of the main avenues for social mobility, the reason it continued to invest in education.
He said during the launch of the scholarship in June, MTN received heart-warming testimonies of how some previous beneficiaries almost dropped out of school but for the timely intervention of the MTN Bright Scholarship Awards.

“The Bright Scholarship became the turning point for them and out of the 119 beneficiaries that graduated, 82 graduated with first class honours with 24 receiving special awards,” he disclosed.

He said special emphasis was placed on selecting students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Data Analytics, Robotics Vocational and Technical Education.

Persons with Disability interested in studying Information Communication Technology and Computer Science were also given priority, he said.

Beyond the scholarship, Mr Koranteng said the MTN Foundation had built several schools, refurbished hospitals and empowered people economically, thereby impacting the lives of four million Ghanaians directly and one million others indirectly.

He said the Foundation had spent $15 million on corporate social responsibilities in the areas of education, health and economic empowerment.

MTN Ghana has partnered with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) to create awareness of cyber security among the youth to reduce cybercrime in the country.

The awareness creation, which began at the Labone Senior High School, was to mark cybercrime awareness month and also part of MTN’s commitment to supporting the CSA to reduce cybercrime.

The National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is an annual event by the National Cyber Security Centre of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation to intensify capacity building and awareness creation efforts on cybercrime dubbed: “A safer Digital Ghana.”

Mrs Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei, the Senior Manager for Enterprise Information Security and Governance at MTN Ghana, said the decision to partner with the Authority was part of MTN’s social responsibility to ensure that cyber security issues were brought to the barest minimum in Ghana.

“We are in a digital age now and most of our lives are spent on the internet, so I think it is important to raise awareness on cybersecurity issues to make sure that those living their lives online are safe,” she said.

The Senior Manager said MTN had engaged other stakeholders like Telecoms Chamber and Girls in Information Communication Technology in an attempt to reach out to all.

Mrs Hanson-Kotei urged the students to stay safe online and not to overexpose themselves to attacks on the internet and protect themselves not to fall prey.

Madam Abigail Kakai, the Assistant Manager of Child Online for the Authority, commended the Management of MTN Ghana for the foresight.

She asked the students to reach out and report all cybercrime cases to the authorities.

Madam Adelaide Boye, the Assistant Head Teacher, at Labone Senior High School, also thanked MTN and the Authority for the engagement.

“We are privileged that we are the first school to benefit from this activity and I will entreat all students and staff present here to help transform lives in the cyber security system,” she said.

  • MTN Ghana Excites Customers with Nii Commey Handwriting Play “SKIRTS & SUITS”

The GNAT Hall’s Bediako Hall was filled with joy and laughter last Saturday as a cross-section of Ghanaians were thrilled with the captivating Nii Commey Handwriting Play dubbed: “SKIRTS & SUITS.”

The play, which MTN Ghana sponsored and helped stage, was performed to honour this year’s International Customer Service Week.

A night of immersive corporate stage dramedy was presented to thousands of theater enthusiasts by the storytelling hub Handwriting Communications.

The story of angels and demons, of customer experience, interlaced with spicy corporate nonsense, knee-slapping, untamed characters a touch of the feminine spirit and masculine ego.

The play focused primarily on what happens in an organization in regard to customer service.

The play is a standard depiction of the comings and goings in a conventional corporate setting, with strong customer service underpinnings.

In Skirts and Suits, the contemporary corporate office was the point of action of all the drama that happens daily, with an urban fusion of exciting characters occupying the roles of customers, employers, customer service people, and the entire workforce who interface with the organization.

The story clearly exposes the good, the bad, and the ugly that happen in a typical office. What is more thrilling is the chronicling of the contemporary corporate woman and the vicissitudes that stare at them: the opportunities, and the temptations, power, position, and romance.

It was a night for service providers, corporate Ghana, and all who are customers in one way or the other. Patrons are being entreated to be expectant of something unusual.

Nii Commey Handwriting has, over the years, plopped the seats of theatre lovers with his timeless plays such as “Romantic Nonsense”, “My Name is Romance,” and “Where Two or More Women are Gathered.”

Handwriting Communications is an indigenous storytelling hub based in Accra, dedicated to using experiential storytelling tools for communication, education, and entertainment.

  • Our problems are bad leadership, corruption – Dr Ishmael Yamson

Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, Dr Ishmael Yamson, has expressed “frustration” over the country’s slow pace of development and blamed the situation on bad leadership, corruption, and greed.

In an interactive session with some young people in Accra on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, he said the living conditions of people in the colonial era through to independence were better compared to today.

Dr Yamson, who is also a management consultant, recalled events in the colonial era, where he said his grandfather, a farmer, could sell a bag of cocoa for 13 shillings – and could use that money to fend for his 26 children, grandchildren and nephews.

“Today all our farmers are poor,” the eighty-year-old-man said, adding: “If you take the life of an average Ghanaian today, it is much worse than what I experienced.”

“I have seen Ghana from colonial days up to today… I saw King George VI reign before Queen Elizabeth II and before we had the independence agitations, and I can tell you that life for me under colonial rule and the transition to independence and Republican was better than life for me today,” Dr Yamson said.

His encounter with the youth on Wednesday formed part of activities for the 2022 Inter-Generational Dialogue under the auspices of the Passionate Africa Leadership Institute (PALI).

Dr Yamson mentioned greed and corruption as the two major issues undermining the progress of the nation.

He said the country would not develop “until we find a government that says I want to leave a legacy free of corruption and greed.”

He urged all persons occupying leadership positions in the country to build on what was bequeathed to them and work to make the lives of the people better.

“My frustration has been our leaders have not demonstrated enough vision, integrity in the way they’ve managed this country. Our leaders have not just performed what they promised they have to do,” Dr Yamson said.

“Ghana is not that we don’t have people with good minds, goodwill. Our problem is that when it comes to executing those plans we are corrupt, greedy and those things will never allow us to develop,” he added.

Dr Yamson also expressed concern over the inability of businesses to grow and expand their operations after the demise of their founders.

He observed that many businesses were operated under the dictates of their founder without structures and proper succession plans.

“One of our biggest tragedies is that many of our entrepreneurs die with their businesses …the business is run in the head of the founder so when he dies, the business disappears, “Dr Yamson said.

He urged the youth to “rise up,” abstain from corruption and greed and vote for a leader who would make their lives better.

Mr Frank Paa Kumi, Convener for PALI, said the Dialogue formed part of initiatives intended to connect young people with distinguished personalities to share their experiences with them.

He said it was the expectation of the Organisation that many young people would be impacted positively to help raise an army of young people who would contribute positively to the development of the nation.
