  • QWIKLOAN data intact MTN

    MTN Ghana has urged its customers to dismiss reports that the company has lost data on its QWIKLOAN service following the fibre cut last week.

    A message from the telecom giant said: “MTN wishes to inform its loyal customers to debunk rumours about loss of data on its QWIKLOAN services.

    “Data on QWIKLOAN are shared securely and under no circumstance will an undersea Fibre cut affect data storage for the services. This information is not true and should be disregarded.”

    Last week, MTN was hit with fibre cable cut which resulted in an interruption of its services.

    “This is as a result of a double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe. We are working with our international providers to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.

    “This situation is affecting all operators and customers in the West Africa region due to cut on the West Africa Cable System (WACS).The West Africa Cable system is an ultra-high capacity fibre optic submarine cable which links Europe, West Africa and South Africa connecting 14 countries over two continents.”

  • MTN to compensate subscribers for data service challenges

    Telecommunications giant MTN says it will soon compensate its customers for the data challenges they experienced last week.

    Customers of the network from Thursday, January 16th to Saturday, January 18th, took to social media and other platforms to complain incessantly about their inability to access data services.

    MTN in an earlier statement attributed the problem to “a double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe which affected six Operators in six West African Countries and beyond.”

    Responding to calls for compensation by the Consumer Rights Protection Agency, Sam Koranteng, the Corporate Services Executive at MTN, told Citi Business News that efforts were underway to ensure that all concerns of customers are addressed.

    “What is it is that, at MTN, when our subscribers have gone through some discomfort and challenges with the service, we make it a point to compensate them. As we are back and running on our normal routine, we are internally having that discussion and very soon we would come out with an inconvenience package for our subscribers. I am sure we should be coming out with something for our subscribers soon,” he said.

    It tweeted a message assuring that “Ghana is fully restored.”

    MTN in an earlier statement attributed the challenges over the last two days to “a double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe which affected six Operators in six West African Countries and beyond.”

    The West Africa Cable System (WACS) is in the Atlantic Ocean and connects many other African countries to Europe, according to Openserve, a unit of Telkom SA SOC Ltd.

    Other countries across the coast of West, Central and southern Africa also suffered slow internet connectivity issues since last Thursday.

  • We have restored internet services fully – MTN Ghana

    Telecommunications giant, MTN Ghana has announced that they have fully resolved the challenges which led to break in their data services and international outbound calls.

    In a series of communications to custmers, MTN said the challenge has been resolved.

    “We are glad to report that we have resolved all issues with our internet service”, the statement read.

    MTN subscribers in Ghana and other Africa countries form Thursday, January 16, 2020, experienced fluctuations in their internet connections and network generally.

    The telco responded and explained to customers what the problem was. MTN Ghana blamed the disruptions on an “undersea fiber cable cut”.

    In a circular sent to shareholders and other stakeholders on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), the company said the hitches were caused by “double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe.”

    It explained that the cut on the West Africa Cable System (WACS) had also affected other operators and customers in West Africa but assured that it was working to resolve the situation.

    But the company says Ghana now has been fully connected to the internet and also expressed appreciation to subscribers for their patience while apologising for the inconvenience caused.

    Meanwhile, some MTN subscribers also confirmed on social media that, they now have access to uninterrupted data service.

    It explained that the cut on the West Africa Cable System (WACS) had also affected other operators and customers in West Africa but assured that it was working to resolve the situation.

    The circular followed series of complaints by Ghanaian users of the company’s network that data services were unusually slow and unstable.

    In the circular, the company said “MTN Ghana is aware of the issues affecting mobile data connectivity across Ghana and many areas in West Africa.

    This is as a result of a double undersea fibre optic cable cut in Europe,” it said

    It added that the company was working with its international providers “to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.”

    “This situation is affecting all operators and customers in the West Africa region due to cut on the West Africa Cable System (WACS),” it said.

    The West Africa Cable system is an ultra-high capacity fibre optic submarine cable which links Europe, West Africa and South Africa.

    It connects 14 countries over two continents, the circular said.

    “MTN has already begun work to restore traffic through other channels and will continue to use alternative routes of connectivity and additional capacity to ease the congestion until the situation is resolved,” it said

    It added that the company would not rest “until we have restored all services for our customers.”

  • Submarine fiber cut caused disruptions in data and outbound services – MTN Ghana apologizes

    Telecommunications giant, MTN Ghana has apologized to its subscribers in Ghana for disruptions in data services and international outbound calls experienced on Thursday, January, 17.

    According to a text message sent out to subscribers by the company, the fluctuations in data services was as a result of an undersea submarine fiber cut.

    “Y’ello MTN sincerely apologizes for the disruptions you are experiencing with our data services and international outbound calls. This is a result of a submarine fiber cut. Our engineers are working to resolve the challenge. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

    The disruptions, however, were met by numerous complaints on social media by subscribers of the services provider about their inability to undertake transactions and access the internet.

  • MTN realises R14 billion in asset sales in 2019

    MTN announced its Asset Realisation Programme (“ARP”) in March 2019 which aims to simplify its portfolio, reduce debt and risk, improve returns and realize proceeds of at least R15 billion over three years.

    Following on the proceeds raised from the disposals of its stakes in Amadeus, Travelstart and the ATC loan of R2,1 billion earlier in the year MTN has now concluded two further transactions bringing the total proceeds from its ARP to R14 billion thus far.

    Firstly, MTN has concluded an agreement to dispose of its 49% equity holdings in the Ghana and Uganda Tower Company investments to a subsidiary of American Tower Company for $523 million, approximately R7.3 billion. This transaction is expected to close in Q1 2020.

    Secondly, MTN confirms that MTN Nigeria has completed the redemption of its preference shares with MTN Group receiving, in December 2019, an amount of US$315 million (cR4,4 billion).

    Group President and CEO Rob Shuter commented “Following the completion of these transactions, MTN will have realised proceeds of approximately R14 billion within the first 12 months of this program.

    Realising proceeds from simplifying the group remains a major strategic objective and we expect further progress in this program in 2020.”

  • Businessman wins ultimate prize in MoMo@10 Promo

    A 45-year-old businessman, John Quayson has won the ultimate prize in the MTN Mobile Money 10th anniversary, (MoMo@10) promotion.

    He took home a Hyundai Santa Fe 2019 edition, at a ceremony held in Accra, after emerging the customer with the highest number of points in using MoMo for transactions.

    Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Mr Quayson, a fish distributor, expressed excitement for emerging the winner.

    Touching on recent rumours that emerged of a possible collapse of the MTN MoMo Service, which subsequently led to panic withdrawals by some customers, Mr Hini said MTN MoMo was safe and that the Network was working with security agencies to arrest the perpetrators involved in the audio recording and circulation.

    Alhaji Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager, Commercials, MTN Ghana, congratulated current and past winners of the promo and advised customers to be cautious of calls that claim they had won prizes and should send some money before claiming their prizes.

    “MTN will call you with its own number, thus, 0244300000, also bear in mind that MTN won’t extract money from anyone before they are awarded with their prizes, so beware,” he noted.

    Mr Rufai, however, urged customers to send a text message to a Toll Free number 1515 to report anyone who tried to defraud them.

    Cash prizes ranging from Gh¢500.00 to Gh¢3000.00 and Samsung flat screen television sets from 49 to 65 inches were presented to the other winners.

    Presentations are still underway in the regions as four remaining cars are still up for grabs.
