    Several arrested as investigations into Adabraka gold shop robbery intensify

    Several suspects linked to the Adabraka gold shop robbery have been arrested as investigations intensify, the Minister for the Interior Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed.

    The Minister made this known on Wednesday, June 10, when he appeared before Parliament. According to him, significant progress is being made in addressing key security concerns across the country.

    Meanwhile, Salam Mohammed aka Fariwata, Alhassan Iliyasu aka Arab Man, Hamza Agerego aka Nene Bawku, Abdul Samed Bonsibu Larry, Fatawu Ibrahim aka Motorway, and Abubakar Sadik aka Fifty Cent have been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit robbery and two counts of robbery.

    Background

    A daring armed robbery unfolded in broad daylight on Wednesday afternoon in Adabraka Official Town, Accra, leaving bystanders in shock.


    The incident occurred between Nobles Spot and the well-known Aponkye Spot in the area. Witnesses were left immobilized, unable to intervene, as the robbers brandished a black pistol. Surprisingly, no one reported the crime to the police even after its conclusion.


    The victim was left to assess his losses on his own, as the robbers, a duo on a black motorcycle, swiftly departed with a substantial amount of cash contained within a polythene bag.


    Reports from Graphic Online suggest that the robbers likely trailed the victim discreetly from the location where he acquired the money.
    The attack was launched when the victim reached the Brewery Loop on Official Street.

    Eyewitnesses who provided an account to Graphic Online stated that the incident occurred around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
    Witnesses recounted hearing the robbers demanding money as they intercepted the victim.

    They compelled the victim to open the bag, all of this happening on the side of a black vehicle. The daylight robbery was swift, lasting less than two minutes, and the culprits fled the scene on the same black motorcycle they used for their operation, successfully escaping with a significant sum of money.


    Both the victim and the robbers were on motorcycles, with the victim utilizing a red one. The scene of the crime was the Brewery Loop, connecting Official Street at Adabraka Official Town.


    According to eyewitnesses, the two assailants, their faces concealed by helmets and attired in black jackets, approached the victim on their black motorcycle from the opposite direction on the loop.


    Using their motorcycle to block the victim’s path, they coerced him to halt. Swiftly, they rifled through his bag and discovered an additional GH¢400, consisting of two GH¢200 notes. Without hesitation, they seized this sum as well before making a hasty escape on their motorcycle.


    The shocking incident left witnesses too afraid to intervene, leaving the victim to wait for a while before leaving the scene.


    Mobile Phone Robbery Incident on the Same Stretch


    Adding to the unsettling incidents in the area, another robbery transpired on the same stretch the following morning, August 24.


    In this case, the target was a mobile phone. The culprits, again employing a motorcycle, intercepted the victim and demanded his mobile phone. Subsequent to the crime, they sped away.
    In both instances, fear seemed to immobilize witnesses from taking any action.

    Perpetrators of Ablekuma North rerun chaos will face the law – Muntaka

    The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka, has vowed to go after individuals who contributed to chaos during the Parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

    According to him, justice will be served regardless of the perpetrators’ political affiliation.

    He pledged while addressing the media on Monday, July 14, as part of the ‘Government Accountability Series’ programme.

    “I can assure you that not my party, not any group, will we sit and allow to see the resurgence of vigilantism. I have spoken to the IGP firmly about the happenings in the Ablekuma North. Videos have been forwarded to him, and we have instructed him to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to book.

    “We’re not going to condone any actions by individuals within or outside our party going around to do the untoward. I can assure the public that we will ensure that under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, no such group will be allowed to form,” he assured.

    Reacting to the incident, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has rated the Ghana Police Service’s performance at the just-ended Parliamentary election at the Ablekuma North Constituency as unsatisfactory.

    The organization believes the police failed to execute their mandate despite their numbers.

    The Electoral Commission (EC) held an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents with a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections on Friday, July 11.

    However, voting in two polling stations, the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station and St. Peters polling station in the constituency, was suspended and later continued following chaos.

    At the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station in the Ablekuma North constituency, some individuals engaged in a fisticuff with the police personnel. Also, a JoyNews journalist was slapped by an unknown individual.

    Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Ewutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson, was also assaulted by a group of men during the election.

    In a video gone viral, a man lunged at Hawa Koomson, pushing her to the ground. Another person was seen kicking her.

    The Police officers present intervened and prevented further attack against Hawa Koomson.

    Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted one of its officers who was caught on camera slapping a journalist with GH One Television, Banahene Agyekum, during the rerun election at Ablekuma North.

    In line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

    The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North.

    The Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated.

    It is unknown what exactly transpired between the reporter and a group of police officers that led to him being slapped.

    The Police officer’s action has been condemned by all, including the mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who witnessed the unfortunate incident.

    Engaging the media after the assault, Banahene Agyekum expressed distress and pain.

    “Yes, (I won’t be able to continue work today) because my right eye is shaking and I don’t know what happened to my forehead. I have to go for a medical checkup,” he stated.

    The Electoral Commission (EC) is holding an election in 19 polling stations of the Ablekuma North to provide its constituents a representative after the 2024 parliamentary elections.

    After the 2024 polls, Ablekuma North remained the only constituency in Ghana without a sitting MP, due to unresolved disagreements over the outcome of the parliamentary vote.

    On December 10, 2024, three days after the national polls, the EC declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC the winner of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh.

    However, the EC later revoked the announcement, revealing that results from 62 of the 281 polling stations had not been included in the initial collation.

    Efforts to restart the collation in January 2025 were disrupted by multiple challenges.

    These included interruptions due to the submission of unverified pink sheets and a violent intrusion at the collation centre that heightened security concerns.

    The Electoral Commission (EC), after extensive deliberations, in July noted that it will hold the rerun election because the 19 scanned polling station results used for the collation, though approved by agents of both political parties, were not verified by the presiding officers responsible for those polling stations.

    The EC arrived at this decision after it met with the representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, July 1.

    Ahead of today’s election, the EC called on the Ghana Police Service to provide the needed security to ensure a safe environment for the conduct of the election.

    We need money – Adum fire victims reject Interior Minister’s rice donation

    Fire victims at Adum in Kumasi have declined a donation from Interior Minister and Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak, which included 1,500 bags of rice, 800 boxes of cooking oil, and soap.

    The donation was intended to assist those affected by the devastating fire that destroyed properties and disrupted businesses.

    However, the victims refused the items, stating that their most pressing needs are financial support and resources to help them rebuild their livelihoods, rather than food supplies.

  • Minority reintroduces motion for vote of censure against Health Minister

    The minority has reintroduced a motion to kick out the health minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu over his involvement in the Sputnik-V vaccines procurement scandal.

    The private members on the motion, according to the Parliament’s Order Paper, are James Avedzi, Mubarak Muntaka, Ahmed Ibrahim, and others.

    The motion was filed against the minister on the following conduct;

    1. Undertaking International Business or Economic Transaction (procurement and supply of vaccines) as Minister for Health with the Private Office of His Highness Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum without prior approval of Parliament contrary to article 181 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana;

    2. Signing Procurement Agreement with the Private Office of His Highness Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum and S.L. Global Ltd without prior approval of the Board of the Public Procurement Authority under sections 40 and 41 of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663) as amended by Act 914 which constitutes Criminal Offence under the law;

    3. Dishonest Procurement of Sputnik-V vaccines from the Private Office of His Highness Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum and S.L. Global Ltd at the cost of US$ 19.00 and US$18.5 respectively when the ex-factory price of the Sputnik-V vaccine generally announced was US$10 confirmed by the Minister to the Committee responsible for Health.

    4. Knowingly procuring Sputnik-V vaccine from the Private Office of His Highness Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum and S.L. Global Ltd at the cost of US$19.00 and US$18.5 respectively per dose. Nevertheless, informs the Committee responsible for Health that the ex-factory price of the Sputnik- V does not exceed US$10.00 per dose;

    5.Causing payment in the sum of US$2,850,000.00 (Cedi the equivalent of GH$16,331,640.00) to the Private Office of His Highness Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum under void agreement with the Private Office of His Highness Sheik
    Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum, yet fibbed and misrepresented to the Ad Hoc Committee on Oath that no payment was made under the Agreement to the Private Office of His Highness Sheik Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum and thereby committing a crime, to wit perjury; and

    6.The above conduct, being in direct breach of the Constitution and Laws passed by this Honourable House, the Minister for Health be removed from office as Minister by a Vote of Censure passed in accordance with article 82 of the 1992 Constitution.

  • Minority to move vote of censure against Ofori-Atta on November 10

    The Minority in Parliament has served notice that it will move its vote of censure motion against the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

    The Minority filed the vote on censure against the Minister on grounds of conflict of interest and financial recklessness leading to the current economic crisis.

    Addressing the media, the Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, said the group will not relent in its efforts to have the Finance Minister removed from office.

    “The motion of censure is slated to be moved on Thursday, the 10th of November 2022, and the Minority Chip Whip, Mubarak Muntaka has sounded a note of caution to all Minority MPs that all 136 minority MPs must be in the chamber on Thursday, so any member who absents himself does so at his own risk.”

    Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim added that the Finance Minister has been duly served and will be in the Chamber to defend himself.

    The grounds the Minority cites for the vote of censure are:

    • Despicable conflict of interest ensuring that he directly benefits from Ghana’s economic woes as his companies receive commissions and other unethical contractual advantages, particularly from Ghana’s debt overhang.
    • Unconstitutional withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund in blatant contravention of Article 178 of the 1992 Constitution, supposedly for the construction of the President’s Cathedral:
    • Illegal payment of oil revenues into offshore accounts, in flagrant violation of Article 176 of the 1992 Constitution:
    • Deliberate and dishonest misreporting of economic data to Parliament 5. Fiscal recklessness leading to the crash of the Ghana Cedi which is currently the worst-performing currency in the world:
    • Alarming incompetence and frightening ineptitude, resulting in the collapse of the Ghanaian economy and an excruciating cost of living crisis;
    • Gross mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy which as occasioned untold and unprecedented hardship

    I can turn economy around

    Meanwhile, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, is fighting to save his job and has called on Ghanaians to trust in his competence and ability to rescue Ghana’s ailing economy.

    Speaking at a meeting with the Association of Ghana Industries, Mr. Ofori-Atta said Ghana remains the best destination to do business.

    “Let me assure you that you have a Finance Minister who has gone through all the pains and the aches, and nobody can really say we don’t understand what we are doing. The question is what resources do we have and how are we going to deploy them in the nation that we have and how do we stand firm in very difficult circumstances but being very confident?”

    “Let me assure you all that your best bet is still Ghana; we can do it, and we should do it,” the embattled Finance Minister said.
