Ghanaian musician and songwriter Epixode has passionately called for a statue to be built in honor of the late Mary Naa Amanua Dodoo, widely known as Naa Amanua.

Naa Amanua, famous for her key role in promoting Ga folk music and as the lead female singer of the legendary group Wulomei, made a lasting impact on Ghana’s music scene.

In an interview with JoyNews, which was also shared by MyNewsGH during the recent Bhim Festival, Epixode highlighted how deeply Naa Amanua inspired him and many other musicians.

“She’s one of the most significant musical figures Ghana has ever produced,” he stated. “As a Ga, I feel it’s my responsibility to honour someone who brought so much recognition to our tribe and culture.”

Epixode’s emotional tribute to Naa Amanua during the festival struck a chord with the audience, emphasizing her role in safeguarding and promoting Ga culture through music.

He also suggested building a statue in her honor, stressing the need to preserve the legacy of cultural legends like Naa Amanua for generations to come.

  • Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs hit with over 100 new assault allegations

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs hit with over 100 new assault allegations

Over 100 individuals are planning to sue rap musician Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs for sexual assault, rape, and sexual exploitation, according to Texas attorney Tony Buzbee. Some of the alleged victims are as young as nine years old. Buzbee emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “This is an important matter that we intend to aggressively pursue.”

In response, Combs’ attorney, Erica Wolff, asserted that the rapper “emphatically and categorically” denies the allegations, branding them as “false and defamatory.” Buzbee also mentioned that he and his team will thoroughly investigate any parties potentially liable for the alleged abuse.

Recently, Combs was arrested and faces criminal charges related to racketeering and sex trafficking. He is currently in federal custody after being denied bail, which he is appealing, and maintains his innocence regarding all criminal charges.

Buzbee, who is licensed in Texas and New York, reported that he represents 120 alleged victims, evenly split between men and women from over 25 states. Of these, 25 are minors, marking the first accusations against Combs for child sexual abuse. The incidents span from 1991 to the present, with the majority occurring in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami, primarily after 2015.

Many plaintiffs allege they were victims of date rape following parties hosted by Combs at various notable locations and private venues. Buzbee noted that these gatherings often celebrated album releases or holidays like New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July. Young aspiring artists reportedly faced coercion into sexual acts under the guise of potential stardom or music opportunities.

One case highlighted by Buzbee involves a man who claims he was abused at a New York recording studio when he was nine years old. He stated, “Had he not been in power, I feel I could’ve been something great. I quit the industry because of what Sean Combs did to me.” Another alleged victim, also a minor at the time, was supposedly told he would be made a “star” if he met Combs alone; during that encounter, he claims Combs solicited oral sex.

Additionally, Buzbee mentioned a case involving a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by Combs and others after being flown to a party in New York. He described a disturbing pattern where alleged victims were offered “laced” drinks before assaults occurred.

“This revelation unveils the biggest secret in the entertainment industry,” Buzbee said, declaring the end of the longstanding silence surrounding such abuses. He clarified that the legal action would not be a class action lawsuit, with individual cases to be filed for each alleged victim.

Andrew Van Arsdale, an attorney collaborating with Buzbee, indicated that their firm has received over 3,000 calls from individuals claiming to have experienced abuse at the hands of Combs. In addition to the 120 current cases, they are reviewing another 100 potential claims.

Controversial musician and media personality Blakk Rasta has voiced his disappointment in Kennedy Agyapong for endorsing New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Rasta recalled Agyapong’s previous assurances that he would not support Bawumia due to unresolved issues, making the recent endorsement perplexing.

Blakk Rasta believes Agyapong’s decision to publicly support Bawumia ahead of the 2024 general elections could harm his political career, given the party’s current dynamics.

Speaking on the UrbanBlend show on 3FM, Rasta criticized those advising Agyapong to back Bawumia, labeling it a misguided move with potential negative repercussions.

“Kennedy Agyapong is not a serious guy. He is a liar and a joker. During the NPP presidential campaigns, he said Bawumia had nothing to offer. I met Kennedy Agyapong personally, and he told me, ‘Never would I campaign for Bawumia.’ What has changed? Do you respect your audience and your fans enough to return to them? I am so disappointed by Kennedy. Whoever is advising him has advised him wrongly. He’s killing his own political career. I’m glad I have lived long enough to see the real Kennedy Agyapong,” he stated.

These remarks followed Agyapong’s appearance campaigning for the vice president during the NPP Ashanti Regional campaign tour, which also surprised many in the public given their past differences.

Renowned musician King Paluta shared insights into his upbringing during an interview on The Delay Show aired on March 23, 2024.

He was raised by his mother for the nineteen years (19) in the absence of his father.

He humorously likened his family dynamics to biblical figures, jestingly referring to himself as ‘Jesus.’

Drawing parallels, he highlighted his mother’s name, Mary, and his father’s name, Joseph, alongside his birth out of wedlock.

The musician recalled his first encounter with his father when he visited their home, revealing that he was approximately nineteen years old at the time.

“It wasn’t until I was 19 or 20 years old that I met him,” said King Paluta. “He came to my mother, and she discussed marriage with him. My father was the only man my mother had.”

He is also one of the driving forces behind the development of Namibia’s music industry.

His sound is influenced by kwaito, dancehall, hip-hop, reggae and Afrobeats.

He’s won over 30 music awards and has 13 albums under his belt.

But he’s preparing to get out of his comfort zone with his next big project.

He is about to perform his music with over 100 others on stage with a symphony orchestra, a 40-strong choir and around 60 musicians from the Alabama School of Fine Arts who are flying in to Windhoek especially.

And yet he told me he still suffers from shyness.

“I don’t think that will ever go away. When I’m alone I still have to record myself in the dark because I’m still not comfortable until I hear what I’ve recorded and if it sounds good, that’s when I switch on the lights.”

He is doing the concert in order to appeal to the government and businesses to put more infrastructure in place for the creative industries.

“The unemployment rate is so high, the youth are trying to do a few things with their talents, but there are no proper platforms and sometimes they become frustrated and resort to criminal activities and stuff like that.

“I’m just saying to the government and private sector: ‘Can we please try and see what we can do for the youth in Namibia to thrive?’

“I want to be able to deliver something that’s going to be remembered for a long time and something that’s going to bring about change,” he said.

The concerts of hope take place on 2 and 3 June at the National Theatre of Namibia.

She helped me financially; I disappointed her, but I don’t mind – Ypee discusses his ex-girlfriend

Kumasi-based musician, Ypee, has stated that he is unconcern that he broke his ex-girlfriend’s heart after all the financial support he received from her.

The musician in his interview with Delay mentioned that although his parents were taking care of him during his days as a student at the University of Ghana, he quit a month after enrolling because he needed a huge amount of money.

“I wanted ‘block money’ which is why I left the school. Also, being at Legon, I couldn’t endure the pressure. As a level 100 student, there was a hostel called Pent. When I pass by the hostel, the kind of cars I see over there, are my dream cars, and I want those cars too,” he said in the interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

“I saw a girl, I tried calling her, and the next thing I saw was her pressing the key to her car, so I then thought, ‘Oh, is this the case’,” he added, disclosing that these informed his decision to quit school.

While he tried to survive, he met another woman who assisted him financially. According to him, he invested in “family businesses with the funds she provided.

“She liked me so I told her to support my dream which is the music I do. She was my girlfriend; we dated for two years,” Ypee revealed.

A curious Delay asked: “So after you made it, you left her?”, to which Ypee answered “I didn’t leave her. She noticed we couldn’t be together. My focus was different and she noticed we couldn’t get along.”

Ypee disclosed that the said woman was four years older than him.

“So, when you stopped dating, were you brokenhearted?” Delay asked.

Without hesitation, the 27-year-old responded: “For me, I wasn’t brokenhearted. I can’t say same for her.”

Delay followed up with another question in an attempt to see how he feels about the breakup as she asked, “So you don’t care about whether she was brokenhearted or not?”

Ypee replied: “No, she’s the one whose heart is broken; she is the victim”.

A musician charged with fraud has been released on bail

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to a musician who allegedly deceived a couple, taking GH₵20,000.00 from them with the promise of obtaining a plot of land but ultimately failed to deliver.

Mr. Isaac Adjetey Adjei, who was charged with defrauding by false pretense, pleaded not guilty.

The Court presided by Mrs Angelina Attachie admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of GH₵20,000.00 with two sureties.

The case has been adjourned to June 12, 2023.

The facts as presented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong were that the complainants were Evelyn Adiki Addy and her husband Adolf Muckenhaupt, who are German nationals, resided at Adenta, while the accused person was a resident of Lakeside, Accra.

The prosecution said in January 2022, the complainants (the couple) visited Marina Park for entertainment and spotted a piece of land around the park and developed an interest in buying it.

It said the couple communicated their interest in buying the said land to the Sheriff, a worker at the park who also led the couple to the accused person.

The prosecution said the accused person presented himself as the owner of the land and told the couple that he (the accused person) had been on an attached plot of land where he and his entire family lived and that he was ready to sell the part that the couple was interested in.

It said the couple and the accused person bargained the price of the land and settled on GH₵120,000.00.

The prosecution said the accused person produced a site plan he claimed to cover the said land and requested that the couple made a deposit to enable him to prepare the land documents for them.

It said the couple obliged and gave the accused person the sum of GH₵20,000.00.

The prosecution said the couple took the site plan for a search and had suspected foul play and reported the matter to the Police, who arrested the accused person and during investigations, he admitted taking the GH₵20,000.00 from the couple.

It said the accused person stated that he used part of the money to prepare the site plan, bought stones and sand to renovate where he was living with his family, and spent the rest.

The prosecution said the Police extended investigations to the Lands Commission and it came to light that the whole site belonged to the Agricultural Cattle Lakeside Estate Limited following a judgment dated May 6, 2020.

  • Stepping out of my comfort zone and breaking out of my shell takes me places – Shashl

Stepping out of my comfort zone and breaking out of my shell takes me places – Shashl

In 2017, Ashleigh Moyo, nicknamed Shashl, became a household name thanks to the debut song she ever wrote, which also led to her signing with a big record label on the continent.

Shashl was signed by Universal Music Africa while still a teen for the R&B song No More. She was the organization’s first female musician from Zimbabwe.

There were advantages and disadvantages to being so young and inexperienced in music when she signed.

“It put me on the map, which I needed to be. It helped me in a great way – I can now handle a lot of situations that people go through in the music industry,” she says.

“But I was so young that I didn’t have the freedom to be as creative as I [truly] was. I was still finding myself trying to figure out my sound, trying to figure out who I actually am and what I wanted to do in life.”

The 23-year-old has since found her sound – a mix of R&B, Afrobeats, a bit of Afro-fusion. And she sings in Shona and in English.

Being the daughter of a former government minister meant that she grew up in a privileged way. But she wanted her music and her lyrics to appeal to less well-off Zimbabweans – and so she started visiting high-density residential areas so that she could try to relate to the sorts of issues most people endure on a daily basis.

“Stepping out my comfort zone and breaking out of my shell takes me places – and that’s exactly what I did,” she recalls.

In 2021, she had a huge hit with Ghetto Buddies, which has had about 1.5 million listens so far, and which she sang in Shona.

“I feel it’s easier to break into a market when you are being more genuine,” she reflects.

She won Best Newcomer at the Zimbabwe Music Awards, and was nominated for best female artist in the Southern African region at the African Muzik Magazine Awards the same year.

“The fact that what I love to do is being appreciated by people. It just fills my heart with so much joy.”

It also made Shashl realise that her musical talent is special, and she doesn’t need to fit in with everyone else. “For the first time I told myself that you were born to stand out.”

The name she performs under – Shashl – came about because she has an older sister called Sherris. They look very similar, which meant that relatives would often get them mixed up and end up calling her a combination of Sherris and Ashleigh.

Shashl plays 10 instruments – including guitar, marimba, mbira, violin and the cello.

“One day I will give a performance playing all of them – because I feel the world deserves it,” she tells me.

  • African leaders are selfish, they only care about their ‘greedy bellies’ – Simi

African leaders are selfish, they only care about their ‘greedy bellies’ – Simi

Nigerian singer Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, popularly known as Simi has criticized African leaders, calling them “greedy bellies” for their inability to develop their own nations but instead travel overseas.

The singer in a tweet she shared on Wednesday, March 8, claimed that Africans struggle for survival and space everywhere they go because their politicians only have their “greedy bellies” in mind.

According to Simi, nobody would choose a stranger’s territory over their own if life were made easy, adding that the leaders’ greed is mirrored in the low social and economic development of the continent’s population.

She wrote: “Black Africans have to fight and fight for space and respect and survival everywhere they go because the one place that is their birthright is hard on their lives. One would think this would make African leaders wake up and help us fight for our dignity.

“Who really wants to go land of strangers, away from everyone and the things they love? People that want to survive. Nobody chooses that life because it’s good or easy. They just don’t want to die feeling that helpless.

“But these leaders don’t love their country. They don’t love their people. They only love their greedy bellies. They only care about their own children. They only care about their families. As long as their wickedness is not happening to them, why stop?” she quizzed.

Marry only one wife – Feli Nuna to men

Ghanaian rapper, singer and songwriter Feli Nuna, has advised men to marry only one wife.

Talking from her experience as one coming from a polygamous home, she stated that it can bring about disagreements amongst the family members.

Talking about her experience to Akua Sika on Happy 98.9FM’s Happy Evening Drive, she said “My dad gave birth to 12 children including 9 girls 3 boys with 4 different women and I would say it’s been a learning curve, and for us we’ve had a nice unit as a family.”

She noted that although growing up there was some sort of tension between she and her siblings, things are now better as they’ve grown and they have gotten past all the issues.

“I wouldn’t want a polygamous family because of my experience. I would rather want to have a nuclear family just me, my husband and children,” she emphasized.

She advised the youth against polygamy because it brings about a lot of issues for the family.

“And it’s not every family that is able to learn from it and grow. Some people still have issues which is not good and the unfortunate part is the man won’t feel the pain rather, the woman and children will. But I’m very fortunate to have my siblings and my family,” she asserted.

  • Roberta Flack is unable to sing after ALS diagnosis

Grammy-winning musician Roberta Flack has been left unable to sing after being diagnosed with ALS, a form of motor neurone disease.

The Killing Me Softly with His Song performer is also having difficulty speaking, her manager said on Monday.

Flack, 85, has won four Grammy awards and received 14 nominations.

A documentary about her life is set to have its premiere next week in New York. She also has plans to publish a children’s book in January.

In addition to Killing Me Softly – which was later covered by the Fugees – Flack is known for songs including The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, which launched her to stardom after it was used in Clint Eastwood film Play Misty for Me, and Feel Like Makin’ Love.

Her condition – Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease – “has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak,” her management said in a statement.

“But it will take a lot more than ALS to silence this icon,” they said, adding that she “plans to stay active in her musical and creative pursuits”.

There is no known cure for ALS, which is caused by the death of the nerves that carry messages from the brain to people’s muscles. It affects their ability to move, talk and even breathe.

The timing of Flack’s film and book release next year coincide with the 50th anniversary of her fourth album Killing Me Softly With His Song, which was released in 1973.

After the singer suffered a stroke in 2016, she told the Associated Press news agency that wants her songs to be remembered as “classics” and and not just an “old hit”.

“I could sing any number of songs that I’ve recorded through the years, easily, I could sing them, but I’m going to pick those songs that move me,” Flack said.

“Now that’s hard to do. To be moved, to be moved constantly by your own songs.”

  • Usher shares three biggest music lessons

American R&B and Pop star, Usher Raymond IV, has shared three (3) key lessons fast rising artistes can adopt for a flourishing career.

The musician who has been in the industry for almost three decades has still remained relevant, producing hit albums throughout his time.

Usher who was in Ghana for the Global Citizens Festival told Y107.9FM’s Jonny Stone on the ‘Y Campus Express’ show, “number one on my three biggest lessons in music is that you need to decide on what you want to do and be unwavering about it no matter how complicated it gets. As long as you are connected to that dream and there is the passion, you will not give up.”

The vocalist believes every musician must have a voice of their own, especially in the midst of many voices trying to influence their path. He charged musicians to find their own way and tell their own stories with their own energy.

Taking a cue from the popular saying; “To whom much is given, much more is required”, Usher posited that young artistes must be ready and willing to put in the work. “Who you hang around is important, they can stop or aid you in achieving your goal so you must be well aware of your surroundings.”

  • You can’t use me to resurrect your dead career – Danso Abiam replies AK Difaya

Danso Abiam, “Ghanaian lady” hitmaker, has debunked allegations leveled against him by Takoradi-based Hip Life artiste, AK Difaya.

2019 RTC Music Video of the year winner, AK Difaya, accused Danso Abiam of failing to come on set for his music video shoot after he was paid adding that his management also refused to refund the money.

In a quick rebuttal, Danso Abiam denied all these allegations leveled against him.

“I was advised by my management not to respond to AK Difaya’s unfounded allegations leveled against me. Ghana is not in normal times because of COVID-19. But I think it is good I come out to tell my side of the story. When his management approached me concerning the shooting of the video, I never charged them. They decided to give me the money for my personal expenses to and from the set. Even on that day, they only gave me half of the amount they quoted initially. AK Difaya personally told me he will be calling me for the set in 3 days.

“I never heard from neither AK nor his management again. I called him several times without success. I finally got in touch with a crew only to be told they were already on set. What crime did I commit to warrant such a run down? AK Difaya is below my standard. Even Sarkodie can not do this to me.”, he said.

Danso Abiam disclosed that he didn’t charge AK Difaya for the track be featured on. He did it for free out of genuine love.

He cautioned AK Difaya to be careful of his utterances in the media space.

  • Mali musician Ballake Sissoko claims US customs broke instrument

Malian musician Ballake Sissoko claims his musical instrument was broken during a US customs check.

Sissoko plays the kora, a traditional West African musical instrument similar to a harp.

He says when he returned to Paris on 4 February following a US tour, he opened up the instrument’s case to find it in pieces.

Inside the case, there was a leaflet from US customs claiming they had opened the case for inspection.

However, it is unclear when exactly the musical instrument was broken.

US customs officials have yet to reply to the BBC’s request for comment.

    ‘Impossible to replace’

Sissoko has performed in concerts around the world including at the BBC Proms in London.

Images posted to his Facebook page show the musical instrument in pieces. A statement on the page claims the neck of the kora has been removed.

“The strings, bridge and entire, delicate and complex sound system of amplification has been taken apart.

“Even if all the components that have been disassembled were intact, it takes weeks before a kora of this calibre can return to its previous state of resonance. These kinds of custom-made koras are simply impossible to replace,” the statement said.

“In Mali, the jihadists threaten to destroy musical instruments, cut the tongues out of singers, and silence Mali’s great musical heritage. And yet, ironically, it is the USA customs that have in their own way managed to do this,” the statement added.

Sissoko claims he checked in the instrument in a hard case at the airport in New York and only inspected it when he arrived back at his apartment in Paris.

The leaflet from Transport Security Authority (TSA) said a security agent had inspected the case and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

A number of Sissoko’s supporters took to social media to voice their support for the musician and demand an apology from US customs.
