“A Home Beyond the Walls” – George Quaye, Naa Ashorkor’s powerful production on female prisoners

A remarkable new chapter is unfolding at the Nsawam Female Correctional Facility with the debut of A Home Beyond the Walls, a theatre production presented by Imagebureau and April Communications.

This project takes audiences inside the lives of the women incarcerated there, sharing their struggles, hopes, and resilience through a moving performance.

Unlike traditional plays, this production is a heartfelt exploration of the women’s real-life experiences, made possible by the combined efforts of Image Bureau Limited, April Communications, and The Fair Justice Initiative.

Written by the well-known George Quaye and directed by the talented Naa Ashorkor, A Home Beyond the Walls is not just a show—it’s an emotional journey that calls for greater empathy and solidarity. It brings to light the stories of pain, regret, and redemption that many women behind bars face but are rarely heard.

“This project signifies a profound shift in our mission as artists,” said George Quaye. “By stepping away from commercial productions this December, we’ve chosen to prioritize compassion, understanding, and social change. This isn’t about theatre for profit—it’s about theatre with heart.”

The production highlights the power of storytelling as a tool for healing and advocacy, offering a platform for women whose voices are often silenced. It gives them the opportunity to share their personal journeys, offering a glimpse of their lives that extends well beyond the prison walls.

For April Communications and Image Bureau Limited, this project marks a return to the transformative potential of the arts. It’s a milestone that emphasizes the power of using creativity to give back to society.

“Today, we stand not just as theatre professionals but as advocates, lending our craft to a cause that deeply resonates. We are honoured to see these women take the stage, turning their personal stories into a beacon of hope for themselves and society at large,” added Naa Ashorkor.

This initiative is not only a breakthrough in Ghanaian theatre, but it also exemplifies the intersection of artistic expression and social advocacy—offering both entertainment and empowerment.

Follow A Home Beyond the Walls on its journey, and be part of a movement that amplifies voices, heals wounds, and fosters a more inclusive and compassionate society.

  • Johnnie Hughes descends on Daily Guide for ‘attacking’ him after NPP govt criticism

Johnnie Hughes descends on Daily Guide for ‘attacking’ him after NPP govt criticism

A broadcast journalist at Media General, Johnnie Beresford Hughes, has criticized the Daily Guide Newspaper for a recent editorial that was targeted him and several other prominent media personalities.

In a recent broadcast, Mr Hughes voiced his disappointment regarding the editorial written by Kwaku Ogboro, which specifically singled out Johnnie Beresford Hughes, Ronald Walker, Berla Mundi, and Naa Ashorkor from various sectors.

Hughes expressed astonishment upon discovering the piece on page 4 of the Daily Guide, noting that he had previously maintained cordial relationships with those involved in overseeing its production.

This unexpected targeting, he emphasized, has left him questioning their motivations.

He also raised concerns about the nature of the criticism, pondering why posing thoughtful questions seems to provoke animosity rather than constructive dialogue from those individuals.

” Yesterday I saw on page 4 of the Daily Guide a very interesting thing on the editorial page of the Daily Guide. I saw a startling attack on me, Ronald Walker, Berla Mundi and Naa Ashorkor written by Kwaku Ogboro and I was asking myself that all those who supervised the production of this I have sat close to them in meetings and they know I smell better than them.

And there’s one called Offei Newton, who used to work at the Jubliee House who no longer has a job who also wrote that, who I know comes to beg for food to eat from a relative of mine. So I was asking myself that why will people not respond to the intelligent questions myself, Ronald Walker, Berla Mundi and Naa Ashorkor but decide to attack. If Alhaji my boss will supervise the production and publication of this means that he is complicit, he is no longer a victim he is a conspirator,” he added.

  • It’s about time we focus our attention on the Black Princesses – Naa Ashorkor

It’s about time we focus our attention on the Black Princesses – Naa Ashorkor

In the wake of the unexpected departure of the Black Stars from the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghanaian TV presenter Naa Ashorkor passionately advocates for heightened attention and resources directed towards the nation’s female football squads.

Ashorkor’s call, prompted by the need to redirect focus amid the Black Stars’ exit, emphasizes the achievements of the female teams, particularly the recently qualified Black Princesses for the U20 Women’s World Cup.

“It’s time to focus on the female teams. The Black Princesses have qualified for the U20 Women’s World Cup. Last year the Black Queens won all their games except one. Give them the funding they need, give them the support,” urged Naa Ashorkor in a tweet.

As conversations about the future of Ghanaian football unfold following the Black Stars’ AFCON exit, Ashorkor’s timely appeal stresses that football success extends beyond male squads.

The accomplishments of the Black Princesses and the outstanding performance of the Black Queens last year underscore the potential and prowess of Ghanaian female footballers.

While acknowledging the palpable disappointment of the Black Stars’ AFCON elimination, Ashorkor views it as an opportunity to shift the spotlight towards the successes of the female teams.

Her plea highlights the significance of recognizing and investing in the talent within Ghana’s female football community.

In the previous year, the Black Queens showcased strength and determination by winning all but one of their games.

Ashorkor contends that providing essential funding and support to these teams will not only elevate their global standing but also contribute to the overall development of women’s football in the country.

As global discussions on gender equality in sports gain momentum, Ashorkor’s call aligns with the broader movement advocating for equal opportunities for female athletes.

Ghana’s football culture, a source of national pride, can be further enriched by channelling resources towards the female teams.

Naa Ashorkor’s appeal serves as a rallying cry for stakeholders to unite and invest in the promising future of Ghanaian female football.

Make your content tell African stories, sell Africa with your platforms – Naa Ashorkor tells content creators

Actress and media personality Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku is advocating for content creators to present a positive portrayal of Africa on the global stage.

Emphasising the importance of narrating genuine African stories free from Western influences, she shared these sentiments during a podcast-style conversation at the Africa’s Business Heroes event in Kigali, Rwanda, on November 23.

With a rich background in creative content creation, including over 200 live shows, Naa Ashorkor stressed the need for a deliberate approach to showcasing African culture.

Encouraging content creators to utilise platforms like TikTok and YouTube, she urged them to disseminate these stories on a global scale.

“Content is global. If I put content on TikTok in Ghana, someone in China will be watching it, and it is an opportunity for me to expose who Africans and Ghanaians are,” she said.

The broadcast journalist urged content creators to “understand that what we have is gold. The best shows about humanity and culture are in Africa. The best stories are told in Africa and we must tell them ourselves.”

“It is about humanity and the wealth in our stories. Create TikTok videos about African stories and tell our stories better because African stories are best told by Africans.”

Ghanaian TV host Naa Ashorkor has shared her robbery ordeal on the Accra-Tema motorway during a conversation on TV3’s New Day show.

She recounted the traumatic experience and her subsequent avoidance of the route.

“Every time I use the motorway, I am scared. The first time I used the motorway in my life, I was robbed on the motorway. I was coming from Akosombo, I was with a family, I think they were an Egyptian family. And we were robbed on the motorway. So I decided I was not going to use the motorway again,” she revealed.

She added that she had resorted to praying when she found herself using the road again. Naa Ashorkor further expressed her concern for those who ply the road every day, calling on the government to do something concerning the matter.

“Fast forward to some time in 2014, I went back to using a motorway because I had to go to Pram Pram. And every time I hit the road, I pray. When I tell you, I say Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer the whole time. I’m not joking. It’s a scary experience, and it’s gotten worse now, I don’t know how people who come from Tema to Accra are able to do this every day. It must be very difficult.

“Clearly, the road is bad now. The tollbooths have made it even so much worse, and we’re calling on the government to do something about it now,” she said.

In addition to a number of other individuals, including rapper Sarkodie, Naa Ashorkor has called on the government to start work on the Accra-Tema highway.

  • Revealed: How “Kayan Mata” is used by young ladies to spellbound men into “Mr Otua”

Revealed: How “Kayan Mata” is used by young ladies to spellbound men into “Mr Otua”

Kayan Mata, can be aphrodisiacs, oils, herbs, potions, or potions, but their sole function is to improve sex or love.

It is made up of Hausa terms “Kayan” and “Mata,” which mean “property” or “things” in English. The phrase is literally translated as “women’s things” when put together.

It appears to have existed for centuries and originated from Northern Nigeria.

Originally, it was used by these women for sexual pleasure, and served as enhancers, or aphrodisiacs, especially for young brides, but in recent times, it has become a really huge trend for women all over the world.

In Ghana, the trend has become very prevalent and these products are even advertised via the internet and on various social media platforms.

Patrons of these products have diverse interests, to attract men for money, sex, marriage, etc.
What some may not know is how the Kayan Mata is used by its clients.

In a post on media personality – Naa Ashorkor’s Facebook page, she indicates how some women with in-depth knowledge about how people use the Kayan Matan for their ‘victims’ shared this with her on her show; ‘Just us’.

According to her, she picked some pointers which include the fact that the Kayan Mata products are in 3 categories; vaginal upgrade, faithfulness, and libido boosting, and the third; favour and attraction potions.

Users of the potion need to talk to the oil and indicate exactly what they want from it and it happens.

“In order to activate the potion, you simply talk to the oil. For instance – “oil, please let me attract rich men who can buy me a car”. When you go out, the men will literally be falling over themselves for you. They can’t help it,” she wrote.

She however indicated that some men who called into the show also shared how the male variation referred to as ‘For girls’ is used by some men for similar interests.

“Interestingly, when I activated the phone lines to ask ladies to share their experiences, only men called! Apparently, Kayan mata is a variation of “For girls’ and the men have interesting stories about the potency of this potion. Scary! One guy said his friend used it to get his wife to accept his marriage proposal. So this woman is currently under a spell. Apparently, a lot of married people are under spells they are not aware of,” Naa Ashorkor narrated.

Naa Ashorkor also shared stories of how some users of these products suffered side effects or had experiences which didn’t go in their favour.

In one instance, a woman who tried using it to attract men ended up attracting mad men. In another, a woman who tried using it on another man who already had activated the ‘For girls’ potion ended up dying.

“A lady who bought and used attraction potion now attracts only “mad men” literally, in traffic, they approach her and try to touch her, they literally chase her around town, sometimes more than one at a time. When she complained to the vendor she bought it from, she told her to go to Benin to see the original seller. There is no other way to undo this charm,” she shared.

    Adding,

“The side effects are dire. Sometimes you cannot break away from this spell or spirit even if you want to. My guest shared a story about a girl who used it on a man, the man apparently had more potent potions which killed her. She is dead oo”.

  • Ghanaians don’t appreciate my father enough, says Jackie Ankrah

Ace broadcaster and singer Jackie Ankrah has said Ghanaians must celebrate past leaders like her father, former head of state Lieutenant General J A Ankrah as a way of inspiring the new generation to do more for the country.

Speaking on the Between Hours show on Monday (21 November) with Naa Ashorkor, the singer said: “And just recently he was honoured at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, and when they wrote and spoke about him, I was proud because my father has done so many things that we don’t get told about, because we rewrite history all the time.”

“But I think these are things that we must talk about to encourage one another and encourage the next generation.

“We don’t talk about my father much, which is unfortunate because of the Nkrumah overthrow. My father was the first in many things, but my father was an amazing, remarkable, incredible soldier,” the songwriter added.

    About J A Ankrah

Joseph Arthur Ankrah (18 August 1915 – 25 November 1992) was a Ghanaian army general who was the head of state of Ghana from 1966 to 1969 in the position of chairman of the National Liberation Council. Before becoming head of state, Ankrah served as the first commander of the Ghana Army.

He was Ghana’s first military head of state. Ankrah also served as chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity from 24 February 1966 to 5 November 1966.

Ankrah joined the Gold Coast Regiment in 1939. On the outbreak of World War II, Ankrah was mobilized into the Royal West African Frontier Force. While his Brigade was in East Africa in 1940, he was transferred to the Record Office in Accra with the rank of Warrant Officer Class II and made second-in-command.

In October 1946, he went to the Marshfield Officer Cadets Training Unit in the United Kingdom and graduated in February 1947 as the first African officer in the Gold Coast Army. He was commissioned a lieutenant in 1947 and became the first African camp commandant at the Army Headquarters.

He was later made the first Ghanaian Chief Instructor of the Education Unit. He was promoted Major in 1956 and became the first African to command an all-African company, the Charlie Company of the First Battalion at Tamale, Ghana. He later became Lieutenant Colonel and took over the whole battalion.

He rose to the rank of colonel by 1960, at a time when there were few Ghanaian officers at that level. During the United Nations Operation in the Congo, he was the Brigade Commander of the force-based at Luluabourg, Kasai in the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was the only Ghanaian awarded the Military Cross in Leopoldville for acts of unsurpassed gallantry in Congo in 1961.

As reported earlier, Naa Ashorkor Mensah Doku is just one of the 100 people whom the company had laid off.

These people are expected to say their final goodbye to the company by the close of May 2020.

Multimedia lays off 100 workers: Naa Ashorkor and some of the brands of the Multimedia Group.

One of the workers who has been affected is Sammy Duodo, News Editor of Adom FM. According to deep-throat sources say that the company took the decision to lay off the workers due to financial constraints.

Our sources tell us that the company has been facing dire financial difficulties several months even before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana.

For this reason, salaries were delayed most of the time and were sometimes paid half-way into the next month.

We were reliably been informed that the lay off of the workers had been on the mind of management for some time now. Thus, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic came as an opportunity for the management to let some of its staff go.

Our sources further revealed that the management is refusing to send emails to the affected workers to this effect for fear of the emails being leaked.

Some of the brands of the Multimedia Group include Adom FM, Asempa FM, Joy FM, Luv FM, Hitz FM, and Nhyira (Blessing) FM
