It is your job to provide us electricity, not a favour – PPP

Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its failure to provide Ghanaians with a load-shedding timetable amidst ongoing power cuts, locally known as “dumsor”.

During a discussion on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Nana Owusu expressed deep concern over the detrimental impact of erratic electricity supply on businesses and communities across the nation.

He condemned the lack of transparency and accountability from the ECG, emphasizing the urgent need for clear communication and direction from the authorities.

According to him, the Ministry of Energy and the electricity suppliers, particularly ECG, are solely responsible for the plight of Ghanaians as a result of the power cuts.

Nana Owusu highlighted the absence of a comprehensive power schedule, leaving citizens in the dark and unable to plan their activities effectively.

He further stressed the importance of providing guidance to help Ghanaians mitigate the adverse effects of power disruptions on their livelihoods.

“We need direction. Leaders must come and tell us directions. You are there; you are accountable to the people. You have collected our money.

“We pay taxes. You owe us to make sure we have lights. You are not doing us any favour…This thing is becoming unbecoming!” Owusu exclaimed, expressing the frustration and dissatisfaction of Ghanaians.

  • A vice president is a co-driver, not a mate – PPP Chairman to Bawumia

A vice president is a co-driver, not a mate – PPP Chairman to Bawumia

National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has called out Vice President and New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Bawumia, over his driver-mate remarks.

He disagrees with the notion held by the vice president as a mate other than a co-driver.

“This driver mate thing, Bawumia cannot be a mate; he is a co-driver because the nature of a mate is not neccessarily that of a driver with a licence.

This comes after Dr Bawumia delivered his vision speech as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the UPSA auditorium on February 7, 2024, where he used the analogy of a mate and a driver, where the mate had limited control over driving; hence, in his position as a vice president.

He expressed how limited his powers and authority over decisions are, hence his desire to become president to be able to run the affairs of the country well.

But the PPP chairman, during an appearance on Kwame Sefa Kaye’s Kookrokoo morning show on Peace FM on February 20, believes this narrative is a ‘dangerous’ one to hold on to.

As stated by Mr. Owusu, a vice president is a co-driver and not a mate. As mandated by the constitution, a vice president is one who is eligible to step in as president in the absence of the president.

“But the nature of a vice president is that you are ready when the president is not there; you are there. That is why the constitution of the land says that when the president is not there, you are there.
You are ready for the possibility. So a mate is not ready but vice president, you are ready.”

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia has come under severe attacks from the public and the opposition parties, who accused him of distancing himself from the failures of the Akufo-Addo led government and undermining the president’s leadership in order to appear to deceive ordinary Ghanaians into voting for him in the 2024 elections.

  • We will win 2024 elections – PPP

We will win 2024 elections – PPP

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has said that it will win the 2024 general election.

According to the National Chairman of the party, Nana Ofori Owusu, the only credible alternative political party, it was working on the ground to ensure that the electorates gave the party the mandate to form the next government in 2025.

In an interview with the media, Nana Owusu has, therefore, assured that the party would soon come out with dates for the election of its officers from the constituencies through region to national.
    Activities

Subsequent to that, he said the election of parliamentary and presidential candidates would be conducted before the 2024 general election.

Currently, the PPP National Chairman said, the registration of all members in the party is near completion.

“We, therefore, urge the general public interested in change in the country’s governance to join the PPP by registering through our digital platforms such as WhatsApp number – 0503517348 or visit any of our offices nearby for registration,” he said.

He described the party’s membership drive as impressive and expressed the hope that many more would register to become party members.
    Policies

Nana Owusu said the party has the best alternative policies and solutions to resolve the current economic challenges faced by the country and for the general well-being of the citizenry.

He, therefore, appealed to Ghanaians to look no further than to the PPP to break the dominance of the two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), that have had the opportunity to govern this country but have not been able to maximise the natural resources of the country for the benefit of the citizenry.

Nana Owusu urged Ghanaians to vote for the PPP, which is the only alternative to breathe some life into the economy for the benefit of all Ghanaians, and not a privileged few.

“It is our duty as citizens to work towards electing the best leaders to steer the affairs of this country into development.

It is also our collective responsibility to stand to the challenges in order to achieve our goal of winning the 2024 elections as an alternative political party,” the PPP National Chairman stated.

  • Members of some political parties were fully sponsored to Qatar by gov’t – PPP Chairman claims

National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has alleged that some political party executives were flown to Qatar by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

In an interview with ace journalist,Kwame Sefa Kayi, on Tuesday, Mr Ofori Owusu indicated that all the cost involved in the trip to Qatar to observe the 2022 World Cuptournament was fully funded by the Ministry.

According to him, executives of the Progressive People’s Party were not provided any sponsorship to Qatar.

“My colleague (political parties) had tickets and full packages to Qatar. They called me and asked where I was. They told me the Sports Ministry gave them packages,” he said.

His claims are yet to be confirmed or denied by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, headed by Mustapha Ussif.

Ghana is among the teams competing to win the 2022 World Cup tournament. Several Ghanaians in the country and across the globe have journeyed to Qatar, in the middle east, to support the Black Stars of Ghana.

In July this year, ahead of the tournament which began in November, it emerged that Kenpong Travel & Tours’ cheapest package for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup from Ghana costs GH37,443.4, estimated at $4,710.

The package covers economy class flight tickets, accommodations for four people in a room, Category Two tickets for Ghana group
matches, COVID-19 testing, travel insurance, medicals, internal transport and a police report.

However, it comes with no feeding while in Qatar. The most expensive package, dubbed Platinum Category A goes for GH₵84,350, approximately $10,610.

It covers business class flight tickets, feeding, single occupancy accommodations in a five-star hotel, Category One tickets for Ghana group matches, COVID-19
testing, travel insurance, medicals, internal transport and a police report.

  • Why are you fighting so hard to stay at post if you work for free – PPP National Chairman questions Ofori-Atta

National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has questioned why Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is so adamant about leaving office, even though he claims to be working for free.

Nana Owusu said that he was one of the first people to commend the finance minister for working for the country for free but he does not understand why he is refusing to vacate his position despite calls by many Ghanaians for him to step down.

“When I heard the finance minister does not take a salary, I applauded him because of his willingness to sacrifice his time and leave all his businesses to work for Ghana for free.

“Now, I don’t understand why the minister for finance, who says is not paid GH¢1 … who gets nothing from the public sector, is fighting so hard to keep a position his own people, including majority of MPs of his party, are urging him to relinquish.

“You are serving us for free and we are saying that we are grateful for the service but you should step aside and you are saying no I will continue serving,” he said in Twi in a Peace FM interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

The PPP national chairman added that the refusal of the finance minister to resign feeds into the conflict-of-interest allegation against him.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Joseph Whittal, has said that CHRAJ has received a petition from Tiger Eye PI, the outfit of Investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, to investigate Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to Whittal, Ana’s outfit wants CHRAJ to investigate Ofori-Atta for the conflict of interest allegation levelled against him for the involvement of his bank, Data Bank, in loans the government of Ghana contracts.

He added that the commission is currently examining the petition as to whether it has merits.

  • 2024 elections: PNC, CPP, PPP to join forces to wrestle power from NPP

Three Nkrumahist political parties have kick-started talks to join forces to wrestle power from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The three Nkrumahist parties are the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC).

The National Chairman of the PPP, Nana Ofori Owusu, gave this hint on Accra 100.5 FM’s 6 a.m. news on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

According to him, there is a need for the Nkrumahist parties to unite to prosecute the 2024 general elections with one accord.

The Nkrumahist political parties are parties that believe in the ideologies and principles of Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

He charged that the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not a reliable alternative as he decried how abysmally the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has managed the affairs of the country under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He asserted that the NPP/NDC will not take Ghanaians anywhere, adding that it is only the Nkrumahist party that has the track record of driving the country’s industrialisation agenda as evidenced in the First Republic.

  • Sacking Ken Ofori-Atta will offer Ghanaians a ray of hope – Nana Ofori to Akufo-Addo

National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party, Nana Ofori Owusu has backed the NPP MPs’ call for the dismissal of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu Boahen, Minister of the State at the Finance Ministry.

Over 100 members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament are said to be in alignment with the petition that Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta must go.

The MPs complain that he is no longer competent in his capacity coupled with other claims that he has lost credibility to front the IMF deal.

But some have also questioned how the resignation or dismissal of one or two people can turn the fortunes of the country’s economy around.

Joining “Kokrokoo” panel discussion programme on Peace FM, Nana Ofori Owusu believed strongly that sacking Mr. Ofori-Atta will give Ghanaians hope for a better Ghana and revive their confidence in government.

“It brings hope. If it won’t change anything, why then do we vote for one person to become President and it lifts up the hopes of many?” he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

He however expressed disappointment in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for refusing to heed calls to dismiss the Finance Minister.

“I have been shocked that government, majority MPs in Parliament have risen up in a manner that has never happened before that they want this person sacked and yet the President, the Executive has become adamant that they won’t allow for this thing to happen. Do you know what is happening? The confidence in our nation continues to be eroded.

“I was shocked that I couldn’t move. I was stiff in my chair when the people in power recognized that there is a person giving them severe headaches and we still said we won’t make a change. How is it that somebody who has lost credibility in his own party…and you say this person should go and sit in front of IMF, front the programme and put together a budget and when he is done with that (budget preparation); the same person is going to ensure its implementation over the same rot (that the party in power), that the 80 plus MPs tell us he is the problem?”, he exclaimed.
