Adum fire victims receive financial support from NAPO

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections, has stepped in to assist the victims of the devastating fire that struck the Adum Bluelight market in Kumasi’s Central Business District.

The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 21, left traders reeling from the loss of their businesses and livelihoods.

During a visit to the fire-ravaged area on Wednesday, April 2, Dr. Prempeh also known as Napo, expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the affected traders and assured them of his unwavering support for their efforts to rebuild the market.

He donated GH₵50,000 and 500 bags of cement to aid in the reconstruction process. In addition, Dr. Prempeh committed to allocating an additional GH₵100,000 from the Manhyia South MP’s Common Fund to further support the rebuilding initiative.

Encouraging unity among the traders, Dr. Prempeh stressed the importance of collective effort in overcoming the tragedy. He cautioned against any divisions that could impede the reconstruction process.

“I know Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the regional minister, Kennedy Agyapong, and others have visited you. Even President Mahama and some other executives from the NPP came here to visit you as well. So, if I don’t make my way here, it will not be fair to you,” he said.

Reflecting on the personal impact of the fire, Dr. Prempeh shared his empathy with the victims: “I believe that the woes of your brother are your woes as well. I have been affected personally by the fire outbreak. It is only when you get affected that you can be able to testify how painful it is. I pray the good God comfort you and bring you back on your feet. Those of us who have taken upon ourselves to do politics must know that we use people to build a nation, not money.”

In a show of solidarity, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, also contributed to the rebuilding efforts by donating 100 bags of cement to the traders.

Both leaders are committed to working closely with the traders and other stakeholders to help restore the market to its former vitality.

  • NAPO ‘fights’ Ablakwa for calling current Parliamentary proceedings redundant

NAPO ‘fights’ Ablakwa for calling current Parliamentary proceedings redundant

Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has proposed that Parliament cease its legislative work if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmakers believe the ongoing discussions and bills no longer hold relevance following the election results.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh was responding to comments by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who suggested that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been decisively rejected by the electorate, making the current parliamentary proceedings redundant.

During today’s parliamentary session on Monday, the NPP’s vice presidential candidate, who was not successful in the recent elections, contended that “Just to get up and say that Ghanaians have totally rejected NPP and all these bills and all these encumbrances is a very, very unfair statement. It is a very unfair statement that says that other things that have been programmed shouldn’t even be considered”.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the importance of addressing critical matters in Parliament, such as bills related to social welfare and environmental concerns. However, he suggested that if the NDC refuses to participate, continuing legislative work might serve no purpose.

“I think the new government then should come and start because we are resetting. And I agree, Ghanaians voted for resetting. So Mr Speaker, probably the only thing we have to do is to take a vote on account and close shop,” he stated.

He highlighted the NDC’s focus on a “resetting agenda” during their campaign and proposed that the current parliament should narrow its focus to a few essential issues before finishing its term.

“Apart from the vote of proceedings and maybe his end-of-service benefits that he [Okudzeto Ablakwa] is very much interested in, every other thing, social protection bills, second reading of bills, third readings, if it is not worth doing, it’s not worth doing. Let’s agree on resetting, close shop on everything, do those they are interested in to further their own personal interests, and close shop,” Dr Opoku Prempeh concluded.

  • What NAPO said about outcome of 2024 presidential election

What NAPO said about outcome of 2024 presidential election

After the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, which saw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerge victorious, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the NPP’s vice presidential candidate, shared a letter reflecting on the results.

In his letter dated December 11, 2024, NAPO acknowledged the decision of Ghanaians and emphasized the importance of the NPP working together with the public to address their concerns.

“The 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections resulted in a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This was not the outcome we, in the NPP, envisaged, but we respect the verdict of the Ghanaian people. To Ghanaians, we have heard you clearly, and with humility, we accept. We will work with you to get it right,” the letter stated.

He expressed gratitude to God for the chance to serve Ghana and thanked Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP leadership, and their supporters for their trust and encouragement.

“I have had extensive discussions with our flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to reflect on the outcome of the elections and, in good time, we shall reflect further as a political party on the causes of our 2024 election loss,” the letter added.

NAPO shared his optimism that the NPP would recover from the loss and earn back the trust and backing of Ghanaians.

“As we go into a period of honest introspection and reflection on this electoral verdict, I am confident that we will emerge stronger and bounce back to win the trust, confidence, support, and affection of Ghanaians,” the letter read further.

He ended by praying for blessings on Ghana and the NPP, expressing hope for renewed strength and resilience in the years to come.

President-elect John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured victory with 56.55% of the votes, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This election also marked a milestone as Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is set to become Ghana’s first female Vice President.

  • Napo mistakenly tells electorates to vote for Mahama

Napo mistakenly tells electorates to vote for Mahama

Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, inadvertently urged voters to back National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama during a campaign speech.

The incident occurred during Napo’s visit to a constituency to promote his candidacy and the NPP’s vision. While addressing the crowd, Napo mistakenly urged Ghanaians to support “John Dramani Mahama” instead of his party’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia.

In a moment of confusion, Napo was seen holding the hand of Mr. Robbert, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency, as he repeated his plea to support Mahama. Realizing his error after a brief clarification, Napo quickly corrected himself, stating that he had intended to mention Bawumia’s name rather than Mahama’s.

The slip of the tongue has drawn attention across the political spectrum, with the NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, seizing the opportunity to mock his opponents. Speaking during a youth engagement event in the Volta Region, Mahama referenced President Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent verbal blunder, where the president mistakenly mentioned “Akufo-Addo-Mahama administration” while listing his government’s achievements.

Quoting scripture, Mahama humorously remarked, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. So when the president is talking about his administration and he says ‘Akufo-Addo-Mahama administration,’ oh, this is unpardonable. It means he dreamt about me the night before!”

Mahama’s lighthearted comments sparked laughter and cheers from the crowd, as he suggested that these frequent slips of the tongue from NPP leaders signaled an unusual preoccupation with him.

UPSA honors NAPO, names a hostel after him

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has honoured Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Running Mate for the 2024 elections, by naming a new hostel after him. This tribute recognises his significant impact on education in Ghana.

The event, held at the university, highlighted Dr. Prempeh’s leadership as the former Minister for Education and his key role in enhancing infrastructure at higher education institutions.

During his speech, Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, praised Dr. Prempeh for his outstanding contributions to the university’s growth.

He particularly acknowledged Dr. Prempeh’s instrumental role in facilitating the funding and construction of the state-of-the-art facility, now named the “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel.”

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s tenure as Minister for Education was marked by a relentless commitment to expanding access to education and creating an enabling environment for learning.

“This hostel stands as a testament to his dedication to improving infrastructure for tertiary education,” Dr. Konadu stated.

The new hostel is expected to accommodate over 5,000 students, easing accommodation challenges on campus and providing a conducive environment for academic excellence.

Dr. Konadu highlighted the critical role of effective leadership in achieving such milestones. “Your support for this project was not just about funding but ensuring that tertiary institutions like UPSA could meet the growing demand for quality education,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, echoed these sentiments, lauding Dr. Prempeh’s enduring legacy in Ghana’s education sector.

“Dr. Prempeh’s impact on Ghana’s education is indelible. From the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy to enhancing the infrastructure of institutions like ours, his leadership continues to transform lives.

Naming this hostel after him is our way of immortalizing his contributions,” said Professor Amartey.

This honor comes three years after UPSA conferred on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in July 2021.

The award celebrated his sterling leadership and dedication to advancing education in Ghana. In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Prempeh expressed profound gratitude to UPSA for the recognition.

“This honor is not just mine but for all who believe in the power of education to transform lives. I remain committed to supporting the growth of institutions like UPSA, which are pivotal to our national development,” he stated.

By naming the hostel after Dr. Prempeh, UPSA shows its gratitude for his contributions and reaffirms its dedication to honoring those who support education.

The event was attended by dignitaries, staff, students, and members of various educational organisations, making it a memorable occasion for the university.

  • A vote for NDC is a vote against progress in Aowin – NAPO to constituents

A vote for NDC is a vote against progress in Aowin – NAPO to constituents

Running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAP0), has asserted that any resident of the Aowin constituency who votes for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is undermining the nation’s progress.

Addressing NPP supporters at a rally in Yakaase within the Aowin Constituency, Western North Region, he criticized the NDC’s lack of development efforts for the area despite consistent support from voters.

Opoku Prempeh recounted Aowin’s voting history, highlighting the constituency’s loyalty to the NDC since 1992 without any tangible results in return.

“Aowin has been voting for the NDC since 1992: NDC in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008.” he said, pointing out that this pattern has not yielded any significant benefits for the community.

In contrast, he underscored the NPP’s commitment to development in Aowin, citing a $250 million World Bank loan secured by President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia to fund road construction, electricity expansion, teacher support, and police recruitment in the constituency.

Opoku Prempeh described the NPP as an inclusive party focused on national progress and assured residents that a vote for Dr. Bawumia would bring transformative leadership and policies aimed at advancing Ghana’s development.

““From 1992, Aowin has never remembered Busia that he gave them hospital and they started voting for the NDC. The chiefs have been calm and Aowin has been voting for the NDC since 1992: NDC in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. I am talking about a presidential candidate. 2012 NDC, 2016 NDC, and 2024 NDC.

“NDC did nothing for Aowin… but Nana Addo and Dr. Bawumia have gone for a $250 million World Bank loan to construct roads, provide electricity, pay teachers, and recruit residents into the police. If you don’t know and you live in Aowin and vote for the NDC, you are a nation wrecker.”

  • DDEP: Govt must have a dialogue with bondholders over troubling impacts of programme – NAPO

DDEP: Govt must have a dialogue with bondholders over troubling impacts of programme – NAPO

Vice presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has called for open dialogue between the government and bondholders affected by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP)

The DDEP, a government-initiated plan launched in 2022, was aimed at tackling Ghana’s significant debt challenges by swapping higher-interest bonds for lower-interest, long-term alternatives.

This programme saw around 95% of local bondholders voluntarily agree to revised terms, including extended maturities and reduced coupon rates, in an effort to aid the government’s financial restructuring efforts.

In a recent media interview, Dr. Prempeh praised the bondholders’ sacrifices, highlighting their role in stabilising the economy and securing the much-needed $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, which was instrumental for Ghana’s recovery.

He noted that without their compliance, the IMF’s approval and subsequent foreign investor confidence would have been unlikely. He stated, “If they hadn’t agreed for us to exchange their 95% bonds, we couldn’t have gone through the restructuring process with the IMF, and the foreign bondholders would not have followed for us to achieve this result.”

While the DDEP has been credited with saving the economy from potential collapse, it has brought financial strain to many investors who had anticipated unrestricted access to their savings.

Dr. Prempeh urged the government to ensure that the phased repayment plans scheduled to begin in 2026 proceed as planned, as bondholders are still dealing with financial instability.

In light of public concerns, he questioned the necessity that led notable individuals, including retired Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, to join protests demanding financial justice.

For many, the DDEP’s restrictions have raised questions about financial security, as savings intended for personal use have become temporarily inaccessible.

Dr. Prempeh acknowledged the widespread hardship and described it as “deeply troubling,” calling for increased government engagement with affected citizens to address their grievances and alleviate the economic burdens caused by DDEP.

  • Vote for NPP or risk halting of progress on development in your area – NAPO to Western North residents

Vote for NPP or risk halting of progress on development in your area – NAPO to Western North residents

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on the residents of the Western North Region to cast their votes for the party in the upcoming December 7 election to ensure the continuation of development initiatives aimed at transforming the region.

He emphasized that the progress achieved under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has set the foundation for further advancements. By voting for the NPP, he argued, constituents would support not only the maintenance of existing policies but also the introduction of new initiatives designed to enhance their quality of life.

This message was delivered during a campaign rally in Chirano, located within the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Constituency.

The “Possibility Bus 2” has made its way to the Western North Region, beginning its tour in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai area to garner support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

At this event, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been actively engaging with local chiefs and community members in Chirano and surrounding areas, urging them to maintain their trust in the NPP.

He highlighted the party’s strong record of development at both the local and national levels.

The constituency’s party executives have committed to staying united in the final stretch of the campaign, working towards a decisive victory for Dr. Bawumia and parliamentary candidate Alfred Obeng.

Dr. Prempeh expressed his belief that the NPP would successfully retain the Sefwi Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Parliamentary seat, citing the significant developmental projects initiated by the party as a testament to their effectiveness.

He voiced his confidence that the NPP would achieve a significant victory in the upcoming elections, underscoring the positive impact of the party’s development efforts, particularly in infrastructure such as roads.

  • NPP is committed to enhancing lives of nursing students – NAPO

NPP is committed to enhancing lives of nursing students – NAPO

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has addressed nursing students at Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Accra, emphasizing the critical role their votes play in advancing initiatives like Agenda 111, the national hospital project.

He called on students to reject the idea of former President John Dramani Mahama returning to power, highlighting what he described as the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s mismanagement of nursing affairs.

Dr. Prempeh pointed out that the NPP’s reinstatement of trainee allowances reflects its commitment to nursing students’ welfare, contrasting it with the NDC’s previous elimination of these allowances, which he claimed created significant hardships for students during Mahama’s tenure.

He framed the upcoming elections as a choice between the stability provided by the NPP’s policies and the uncertainties of Mahama’s leadership.

“Like their colleagues at Korle Bu, they recognize the risk in returning to the leadership of a man who once cancelled their allowances and vowed not to restore them, even if it cost him the presidency.

“The 2024 elections, they believe, are about securing Ghana’s future. That is why they will place their trust in Dr. Bawumia, who will, after four years, return to account for his actions and decisions. In contrast, they fear a leader who will serve only four years and be free from accountability, could once again cut their allowances and impose harsher policies,” a report by citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

Dr. Prempeh also criticized the NDC’s handling of funding for nursing institutions, noting that the NPP had to deal with a two-year backlog of feeding grant arrears inherited from the Mahama administration.

He attributed these challenges to the NDC’s incompetence in managing vital services.

The event also featured remarks from Robert Lamptey, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Madina, and Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, the municipal chief executive, who echoed Dr.

NAPO’s message, urged students to support the NPP to sustain policies that benefit both the nursing community and the broader healthcare objectives of the nation.

NPP MPs are disciplined; they know Parliament isn’t a boxing ring – NAPO

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has condemned what he termed the “unruly conduct” displayed by the Minority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a parliamentary session on October 22, 2024.

Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, criticized the NDC MPs for deliberately taking over seats assigned to the Majority Caucus, with the aim of provoking a confrontation. He emphasized that Parliament is a space for intellectual discourse, not violence.

“The free-for-all fight and bloodshed they [NDC Minority] were expecting in parliament last Tuesday, we didn’t give them. We didn’t give them because we are disciplined and mature. We understand that Parliament is a place for intellectual debate, not a boxing ring. Unlike them, the NPP always prioritizes the peace and stability of this country,” Dr. Prempeh stated.

Addressing the NDC Minority’s actions, he urged them to focus on their legislative responsibilities and refrain from boasting about engaging in confrontations in Parliament, which he described as unbecoming of MPs.

Napo made these remarks during a Stakeholders Engagement on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at the Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College. He took the opportunity to highlight the achievements of the NPP government in the health sector, including the Agenda 111 policy and the restoration of the nursing trainee allowance, which was scrapped under the NDC. He encouraged students to maintain their trust in the NPP and Dr. Bawumia for continued progress.

  • Prove LGBTQ education claim or apologise in 3 days – Muslim associations tells NAPO

Prove LGBTQ education claim or apologise in 3 days – Muslim associations tells NAPO

The Association of Liberal Muslims and the Association of Concerned Muslims have issued a three-day ultimatum to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, demanding he reveals the names of Islamic clerics he claimed were involved in a contract to incorporate LGBTQ teachings into the basic school curriculum.

If he fails to provide these names, they insist he must retract his statements and apologize to the Muslim community.

“What he (NAPO) is alleging some Muslim clerics did contradicts the Islamic teachings. We plead with him to come out and name the said clerics who engaged in this. If he cannot do that, then he must retract his statement and apologise to the entire Muslim community. We are issuing a three-day ultimatum,” a spokesperson for the associations said.

The Islamic faith frowns on same-sex activities and individuals caught engaged in such actions face punishments including death.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, alleged that during his tenure as Education Minister, he uncovered a curriculum developed under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that included Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) aimed at schoolchildren.

He claimed that the NDC recruited religious leaders to influence teachers and that various NGOs benefitted from a $51 million fund to support this curriculum, which he argues contradicts Ghanaian cultural and religious values.

In response, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu and a key figure in the NDC, has threatened legal action for defamation over these claims, emphasizing that he will be contacting his lawyers. He has also challenged NAPO to substantiate his accusations. The unfolding drama highlights the contentious debate surrounding education and LGBTQ issues in Ghana.

Background on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)

Comprehensive Sexuality Education is a curriculum-based initiative designed to address the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social aspects of sexuality.

Although intended to inform young people about sexual health, CSE has faced significant pushback due to its perceived introduction of sensitive topics to children at an early age. Critics, including many parents, teachers, and religious leaders, have raised concerns about the appropriateness of the curriculum.

“Allowances delayed are better than allowances cancelled” – NAPO tells trainee nurses

Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo has reassured trainee nurses that the government’s efforts are focused on avoiding delays in the payment of their allowances.

Speaking at the Korle-Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Prempeh emphasized the NPP’s dedication to sustaining the allowances, which were previously scrapped by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

While acknowledging occasional delays in the payments, he stressed that these delays are far more preferable than the complete cancellation experienced under the NDC government.

“There may be delays, but allowances delayed are better than allowances cancelled,” Dr. Prempeh noted.

Dr. Prempeh also underscored the importance of nursing students to the country’s healthcare system and highlighted the NPP’s broader policies aimed at enhancing their welfare and career prospects.

In response, the students voiced their recognition of the significance of their votes in the upcoming December 7 elections, expressing support for the NPP’s initiatives, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, which they believe will have a lasting positive impact on future generations.

Nurses to enjoy duty-free vehicle imports under Bawumia – NAPO assures

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed that under a Bawumia-led administration in 2025, nurses in Ghana will be allowed to import vehicles with engine capacities below 1.8 litres free of import duties.

Speaking to students at the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute in Accra on Wednesday, October 23, Dr. Prempeh, also known as Napo, made the announcement, which was met with enthusiasm from the nursing trainees in attendance.

“Dr. Bawumia, the incoming president of Ghana, will provide free duty on vehicles with engine capacities less than 1.8 capacity for nurses,” NAPO said.

Napo further emphasised the NPP’s appreciation for the vital role nurses play in healthcare delivery across the country. He assured that a Bawumia-led NPP government would introduce policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of nurses.

“The NPP recognises and appreciates the key roles that our nurses play in the provision of healthcare to the people, so we shall also make sure that your lives will be better.

“As I said already, there will be free importation of vehicles with engines less than 1.8 capacity for our dear nurses, among other important interventions to make you (nurses) live better and comfortably,” he stated.

Napo further guaranteed that the nursing trainee allowance policy, which was introduced by the NPP, would continue under a future Bawumia administration.

He cautioned that if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Mahama regain power, this allowance would be eliminated.

“Former President John Mahama and the NDC do not believe in the nursing trainee allowance. If they win, they will cancel it, making life harder for you. So reject the NDC,” he urged.

Dr. Prempeh also highlighted the NPP government’s ongoing efforts to complete the Agenda 111 hospital projects, which he said would boost healthcare infrastructure and create employment opportunities for nurses and other healthcare workers.

He called on nurses and nursing trainees to support Dr Bawumia and vote for all 275 NPP parliamentary candidates, adding, “The NPP cares for our nurses.”

Napo may seem intimidating but he isn’t arrogant – Senyo Hosi

The Convener of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, has come to the defence of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, against accusations of arrogance.

In a Facebook post on Monday, October 21, Hosi clarified that NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate for the 2024 election, is not arrogant but rather passionate about his views.

Hosi pointed out that while NAPO might come across as strong and firm in his opinions, this should not be mistaken for inflexibility or arrogance. He emphasized that NAPO is willing to admit when he is wrong, which is a sign of humility and personal growth.

“He nurtures strong opinions but welcomes any debate to assure himself of an optimal outcome,” Hosi explained. According to him, NAPO’s assertiveness is typical of individuals deeply committed to their beliefs and responsibilities. Far from being arrogant, NAPO’s willingness to engage in dialogue and acknowledge his mistakes makes him an effective leader.

“I am in no position to judge others and their experiences with Napo, but I can only speak of mine. Working with Napo was demanding. He took nothing on the face of it and would interrogate everything,” Hosi shared, adding that NAPO’s approach challenges others to ensure their positions are well-founded.

“Your being an expert at anything never cowed him. You simply had to make sense and that made two of us,” he added.

Hosi concluded by stating that while NAPO may seem intimidating due to his strong convictions, he is far from arrogant, as his leadership style is rooted in open-mindedness and a willingness to listen to different perspectives.

Everyone is capable of working with him; he is humble – Alima Mahama defends Napo

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Hajia Alima Mahama, has praised the qualifications of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, describing him as a collaborative individual.

Reflecting on her experience during his tenure as Education Minister, she noted that she observed Dr. Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, in Cabinet meetings.

She confidently characterised him as a humble person who welcomes constructive criticism without displaying anger or frustration.

Madam Mahama made these remarks during an event with the Ghanaian community in Memphis, Tennessee, coinciding with Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s visit to the city.

She expressed her disbelief at the common perception of Dr. Opoku Prempeh as being arrogant.

“I watched him at cabinet meetings, and I will tell you what I know about him. He is humble, and he takes criticism in good faith without being angry or upset. When people say he is arrogant, I find it difficult to believe that,” she said.

She also expressed confidence in the Bawumia/Opoku Prempeh pair to secure a resounding victory in the upcoming elections, calling Dr. Opoku Prempeh the excellent pair for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Ms. Alima Mahama also encouraged the Ghanaian community to register for the Ghana card and took time to walk them through the process.

  • “Thank you for your sacrifice” – NAPO to Domestic Debt Exchange Programme bondholders

“Thank you for your sacrifice” – NAPO to Domestic Debt Exchange Programme bondholders

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, has thanked bondholders for their willingness to participate in the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

His comments came after approximately 95% of bondholders agreed to new terms, which include the introduction of new maturity periods, with bonds now maturing between 2027 and 2038.

This agreement played a critical role in restructuring the country’s domestic debt, a key step toward economic stability.

During an interview with Accra-based media on Wednesday, NAPO commended bondholders for what he called their significant sacrifices, which he said were instrumental in aiding the country’s economic recovery efforts.

He emphasised that the voluntary participation of bondholders in the DDEP was crucial, particularly in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and foreign bondholders.

“What we have to know is that if we hadn’t met the DDEP bondholders, our economy, that has now picked up wouldn’t have been possible…If they hadn’t agreed for us to exchange their 95% bonds, we couldn’t have gone through the restructuring process with the IMF, and the foreign bondholders would have not followed for us to achieve this result

They saw that the average Ghanaian has suffered, so they felt compelled to support Ghana’s economy,” he said.

The vice-presidential candidate believes that the bondholders ‘sacrifice did not help the government but benefited all Ghanaians. He also emphasised the importance of dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that concerns are addressed moving forward.

The DDEP,  launched by the government in 2022, is aims to restructure the country’s unsustainable debt by offering lower-interest, longer-term bonds in

exchange for existing ones, a move that faced strong resistance from individual bondholders, financial institutions, and labour unions. But  it was deemed essential for securing a $3 billion IMF bailout and stabilising the economy.

2024 elections: I’m sure Ghanaians will keep NPP in power – NAPO

Running mate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed confidence that Ghanaians will vote to keep the NPP in power.

Speaking to chiefs and party supporters in Anum Apapam, located in the Ayensuano constituency of the Eastern Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasised that the NPP’s achievements in areas like Free SHS, electricity stability, school construction, and the Agenda 111 initiative are key reasons why the people of Ayensuano will rally behind the party in the upcoming elections.

He further noted that the Ayensuano constituency is determined to retain the seat for the NPP and continue building on the progress already made.

“The people are resolute without a shred of doubt that the leader Ghana needs in this defining moment is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They are not only committed to campaigning for him, but they will also vote overwhelmingly in his favour, and through hard work, Ida Adjoa Asiedu is heading to Parliament on the NPP’s ticket.”

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known affectionately as NAPO, believes that beyond the party’s traditional strongholds, the Ayensuano constituency will play a crucial role in securing victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections.

Speaking to chiefs and supporters during his campaign tour in Anum Apapam, Dr. Opoku Prempeh encouraged Ghanaians to carefully compare the track records of the NPP and the opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), before casting their votes on December 7.

He criticised former President John Mahama’s administration, claiming it failed to deliver any significant achievements for the country.

In contrast, he praised the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government for laying a solid foundation for Ghana’s transformation over the past seven and a half years, highlighting the NPP’s success in implementing impactful social intervention policies like Free SHS, the Capitation Grant, and the School Feeding Programme.

Also in attendance at the event was Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, who urged the community to give their full support to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Ida Adwoa Asiedu.

Govt will protect Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves – NAPO

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has reiterated the government’s dedication to protecting Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves while promoting responsible mining practices.

During a recent appearance on Peace FM in Accra on October 16, Dr. Prempeh addressed the ongoing issues related to illegal mining, known as galamsey, which have caused significant damage to the nation’s natural resources.

He emphasized that while mining activities will persist, they will be strictly regulated to prevent operations in sensitive areas like water bodies and forest reserves.

“We will never stop mining. Mining has given the country a lot of benefits; how else would we be able to implement the Gold-for-oil Policy? But we will not mine in water bodies and forest reserves.

“We will implement policies that will equip miners, be it community mining or small-scale mining, with resources for them to mine responsibly and restore the environment.

“We don’t like the use of mercury and the other things they use to disrupt the environment. It was Nana Addo’s government that brought in the gold catchers that are bringing in a higher amount of gold, the same amount of work you have done.

“As the saying goes, water is life and as the last tree dies, the last man dies.. that is why you don’t get people living in the desert. We will protect the forest, we will protect the water bodies, but the mining will continue to be done,” he stated.

Dr. Prempeh outlined plans to introduce policies that will empower miners—whether engaged in community or small-scale mining—to operate responsibly and restore the environment. He condemned the use of harmful substances like mercury, which disrupt the ecosystem.

He highlighted the government’s introduction of gold catchers, which have significantly increased gold production without compromising environmental integrity.

  • Ablakwa to sue Napo over pro-LGBTQ curriculum allegation

Ablakwa to sue Napo over pro-LGBTQ curriculum allegation

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has threatened to drag to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO for defamation regarding a pro-LGBTQ curriculum claims levelled against him.

“Seems I have to take this matter further. You will hear from my lawyers. Because my name has been mentioned. You guys will hear from my lawyers,” he said in an appearance on Metro TV during a discussion with Randy Abbey and Nana Akomea.

Earlier, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, had openly challenged Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to substantiate his claims.

But on Metro TV, a letter read by Nana Akomea referenced the North Tongu MP for his alleged role in the pro-LGBTQ curriculum.

The challenge follows accusations made by Dr. Prempeh during a campaign rally in Bantama, Kumasi, on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ablakwa dismissed NAPO’s assertions as “desperate concoctions and outright falsehoods,” daring him to present evidence.

“When you say a prayer, please say one for Napo. He really needs help. I challenge him to produce the pro-LGBTQ curriculum he claims I prepared,” Ablakwa wrote. He also demanded proof of the alleged involvement of religious leaders in promoting the curriculum, stating, “I also challenge him to provide the names of pastors and imams who went round the country with me promoting LGBTQ.”

Earlier, NAPO, the running mate for the NPP flagbearer, had claimed that when he assumed office as Education Minister, he discovered that under the leadership of Okudzeto Ablakwa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had developed a curriculum that included Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) aimed at school children.

He further alleged that the NDC administration had recruited pastors and imams to influence teachers in various regions to implement this curriculum.

According to NAPO, the CSE was an attempt to introduce concepts of sexuality that were not aligned with Ghanaian cultural and religious values.

He highlighted the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to safeguarding educational content and ensuring that such a curriculum does not influence the nation’s youth.

“Under the NPP, we are determined to protect what Ghanaian children are taught. We will not allow any foreign agenda into our classrooms,” NAPO stated during his address.

  • If you vote for Mahama as a resident in Kumasi, then you have put a curse on yourself – NAPO

If you vote for Mahama as a resident in Kumasi, then you have put a curse on yourself – NAPO

New Patriotic Party’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has warned that anyone in the Ashanti Region who supports the campaign of opposition leader John Dramani Mahama could be inviting misfortune upon themselves.

While speaking to party supporters in Bantama at a rally, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasised that during Mahama’s presidency, he demonstrated bias against the Ashanti Region by dismissing individuals from that area within his administration.

“President John Dramani Mahama, if you live in the Ashanti Region and he comes to campaign for votes and you follow him, you have cursed yourself because he is the only president who ended up sacking every person from Ashanti in his government.

He sacked Kwabena Duffuor, who was the finance minister; he sacked Oteng-Agyei, who was the energy minister.

Did he sack Duffuor or not? He sacked Betty Mould Iddrisu, who is from Agona. Who in the Ashanti Region was he able to work with? It was right here that he stood and said he won’t listen to anyone,” he stated.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a former Energy Minister, has been named the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in support of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign.

As a native of the Ashanti Region, he is anticipated to strengthen the party’s position in this area, which is traditionally viewed as the NPP’s stronghold.

Manhyia won’t vote for NPP because of NAPO – Otumfuo

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has clarified that the nomination of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice-presidential candidate does not guarantee the Manhyia Palace’s support for the NPP in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, a nephew of the Ashanti Monarch, was recently selected as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the general elections. While offering advice to NAPO following his nomination, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II encouraged him not to disappoint Dr. Bawumia and shared valuable guidance for his new role.

However, the Asantehene made it clear that despite the familial connection, it does not influence the political preferences of the palace or its staff.

“Even though Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) is my nephew, it does not imply that people in the Manhyia Palace will vote for the NPP or NDC,” Otumfuo affirmed, reiterating his commitment to remaining neutral ahead of the elections.

During a courtesy visit from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Otumfuo emphasized his impartial stance, stating that individuals at Manhyia are free to vote for whichever party they choose, be it the NPP or the NDC.

NAPO takes campaign tour to Bekwai Constituency

The political scene is gaining momentum as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has made two prominent visits to the Bekwai constituency within four days.

On September 21, 2024, Dr. Opoku Prempeh initiated his campaign by engaging with the Amoafo and Bekwai traditional councils, introducing himself as the NPP’s candidate for the upcoming elections.

Shortly thereafter, he visited the paramount chief and elders of the Kokofu traditional council to extend his outreach.

These visits were intended to seek blessings and communicate the NPP’s vision of hope and progress for the nation.

In his speeches, Dr. Opoku Prempeh promised to visit all seven paramountcies in Bekwai ahead of the December 7 elections. He urged the chiefs to inspire their people to support the NPP, emphasizing the government’s achievements like the Free SHS program and other vital development projects.

He also backed Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei as the successor to Joe Osei Owusu, cautioning against independent candidates who could disrupt the party’s unity and success.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted Bekwai’s significance within the Ashanti Region, noting that it is home to seven paramount chiefs and nine Abrempong, all loyal to the Golden Stool. He vowed to ensure the NPP secures major victories in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

His campaign activities have reinvigorated the NPP’s grassroots efforts, energizing party officials and supporters in the Bekwai constituency as they gear up for the December elections.

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has emphasised the crucial impact that students have on the future of Ghana.

Speaking at the 58th National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Annual Residential Congress with the theme “Depoliticising Education and Upholding Integrity:

The Role of Students and Stakeholders for National Development,” Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, emphasised that NUGS leadership should prioritise serving members over personal or partisan interests.

“NUGS should not be used for personal gain or advancing personal or partisan goals,” he stated.

As a former president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) at KNUST, he commended the organisation’s longstanding engagement in national matters.

He urged students to offer thoughtful critiques of government policies while backing initiatives that bring about positive change.

The former Minister of Education also emphasised the importance of student involvement in the upcoming 2024 general elections, noting how the results will influence their future.

“I firmly believe that under a Dr. Bawumia presidency, the NPP offers the students of this country the best opportunities to achieve their full potential in the 21st century.”

Additionally, the Manhyia South MP urged NUGS leaders to promote critical thinking and engagement among Gen Z voters, ensuring their voices are heard and helping shape the country’s future direction.

  • Stop using galamsey as a political tool – NAPO to Mahama

Stop using galamsey as a political tool – NAPO to Mahama

The Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on former President John Dramani Mahama to cease using the issue of illegal mining, or “galamsey,” for political gain.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh criticized Mahama for his inconsistent stance on the issue, suggesting that the former president’s actions and statements indicate a self-serving approach rather than a genuine commitment to addressing the problem.

“These plain inconsistencies by John Mahama on the subject matter of galamsey for me makes it difficult to trust John Mahama on the subject. Rather, they are thwarting the NPP government’s efforts at fighting the canker”, NPP Running Mate said.

Speaking as the Guest of Honour at the 13th Biennial Conference and 40th Anniversary of the Association of Methodist Men’s Fellowships at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on September 14, 2024, Dr. Opoku Prempeh expressed skepticism about Mahama’s dedication to combating illegal mining.

He recalled incidents from 2020 when high-ranking NDC members were recorded encouraging illegal miners, which, according to Dr. Opoku Prempeh, led to the NPP losing seats in mining communities.

This, he said, was due to the perception that the NDC was supportive of illegal mining while the NPP was seen as opposed to it.

Dr. Prempeh also highlighted Mahama’s contradictory promises regarding galamsey. Initially, Mahama criticized the imprisonment of miners under the Akufo-Addo administration and pledged amnesty if elected.

However, he later reversed his position, vowing to prosecute illegal miners if he were to win the 2025 election.

Dr. Prempeh urged Mahama to prioritize national interests over petty politics, emphasizing the NPP’s dedication to managing Ghana’s mineral resources responsibly. He outlined the NPP’s plans under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, including formalizing and regulating small-scale mining, establishing a Minerals Development Bank, and creating a pension scheme for small-scale miners.

He concluded by calling on the clergy to denounce politicians who exploit national issues for personal gain and challenged the NDC to demonstrate genuine commitment to combating illegal mining by signing a binding national document with the NPP. This agreement would hold all parties accountable for promoting responsible mining practices and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

Running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has appealed to voters in the Tano North Constituency to back the party’s parliamentary candidate, Dr. Gideon Boako, in the upcoming general elections.

Speaking to a crowd in Yamfo, as part of his nationwide campaign, Dr. Prempeh emphasized the value of Dr. Boako’s competence and trustworthiness, describing him as an asset for both the constituency and the nation.

Highlighting Dr. Boako’s political conduct, Dr. Prempeh (Napo) expressed confidence that Boako’s presence in Parliament would enhance its effectiveness.

“Dr. Boako’s election would bring both credibility and effectiveness to the parliamentary role, which will benefit the constituency and the nation as a whole,” Napo said. He further urged NPP parliamentary candidates to intensify their campaign efforts to ensure the party secures a commanding majority in Parliament.

Reflecting on the challenges the Akufo-Addo administration faced due to an evenly divided Parliament, Napo stressed the importance of avoiding such situations to ensure smoother legislative processes in the future.

He called for unity within the party, urging members to set aside internal differences to focus on the collective goal of winning the 2024 elections.

Joining Napo in supporting Dr. Boako, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, also praised Boako’s campaign efforts. Speaking at a Youth Connect Programme in Yamfo, Agyapong commended Dr. Boako and the Tano North constituency executives for their mobilization efforts, calling the turnout “unprecedented.”

“The youth turnout and enthusiasm we’ve seen here is unmatched compared to other constituencies we’ve visited,” Agyapong noted, expressing optimism about the NPP’s chances in the upcoming elections. He urged Ghanaians, especially the youth, to rally behind Dr. Boako and the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing that their combined leadership would drive significant development.

The event also featured contributions from Hon. Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament for the area, who called on constituents to vote massively for Dr. Boako and Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

We will return all seized excavators if we win 2024 elections – NAPO promises

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has promised that all confiscated excavators from the government’s crackdown on illegal mining will be returned under a future NPP administration.

Addressing chiefs and locals in Prestea Huni Valley and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr. Prempeh stressed that NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has no plans to outlaw small-scale mining.

His remarks come amidst growing calls for the government to ban small-scale mining due to the severe environmental impact, particularly the pollution of water bodies.

Dr. Prempeh reassured the mining communities that the NPP is focused on supporting small-scale miners, provided their activities are environmentally responsible.

He emphasised the party’s preference for regulating the sector over imposing a blanket ban.

“When the small-scale miners mine, they are able to get money to fend for their families. Small-scale miners vote for the NDC to win about 6 seats in Wassa, but now they [the NDC] say they will shoot and kill small-scale miners. Tell them the lies are enough. We will not shoot and kill anyone.

“We will give all seized excavators to you so you can do your work peacefully. This will help everyone to get money to fend for themselves and also for the community to develop. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not collapse small-scale mining.

What we do not like is that you put a changfan on water bodies, but anyone interested in the government’s community mining scheme will be able to mine.”

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has pledged that the government will soon reveal the producer price for cocoa beans for the 2024/2025 season.

Speaking during his campaign tour in the Asunafo South and North constituencies of the Ahafo Region, Dr. Prempeh urged cocoa farmers not to be influenced by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding cocoa prices.

He highlighted that the NPP government has consistently placed a high priority on the welfare of cocoa farmers, more so than any other party.

At a rally in Nobekaw, Asunafo South, Dr. Prempeh reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting the agricultural sector, particularly cocoa farming.

“The NPP has increased cocoa prices from over GH¢400 to over GH¢2,000 in the last seven years, and very soon, cocoa prices will go up again to bring more value to farmers,” he mentioned.

He further guaranteed cocoa farmers that the upcoming price announcement would demonstrate the government’s commitment to enhancing their well-being.

In his closing statements, the Manyhia South representative recognized the contributions of the current Member of Parliament, Eric Opoku, for effectively representing the NPP’s position on agricultural matters, especially those concerning cocoa farming.

Don’t expect to cause chaos in December polls and go scott-free – NAPO warns

The NPP’s vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has issued a strong warning to anyone planning to disrupt the 2024 elections.

During his campaign tour in Asunafo South, Ahafo Region, he made it clear that any form of violence or disturbance before, during, or after the elections will not be tolerated and will be met with strict legal action.

At a rally in Noberkaw, Dr. Opoku Prempeh addressed local leaders and attendees, emphasizing that the NPP is committed to managing Ghana’s resources wisely.

He stressed that the party aims to promote economic growth and safeguard the environment while ensuring the well-being of the populace.

He also emphasized that no political affiliation would provide immunity from prosecution for those involved in violent acts, reinforcing the importance of upholding the rule of law.

This warning follows a recent altercation between NDC and NPP supporters in Kwapong, which nearly escalated into severe violence. Dr. Opoku Prempeh assured Asunafo residents that legal processes will be followed rigorously against any unlawful behavior.

In addition, Frank Aduse Poku, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Asunafo South, highlighted ongoing development projects by the NPP government and urged voters to support the party to continue these efforts in the upcoming election.

We won’t shoot illegal miners today or tomorrow – NPP tells NDC

Running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, has rejected suggestions advocating the use of deadly force against individuals involved in illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

In a viral video from a campaign event, NAPO criticizes the opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for what he describes as hypocrisy regarding their position on galamsey.

He claims the NDC, in its quest for power, is pushing for a shoot-to-kill policy to combat illegal mining—an approach he deems inappropriate. NAPO clarified that no one will be shot, and a more suitable method of mining will be pursued.

“The time they wanted vote, they said when they come, they would leave the galamseyers alone. But now they want to tell NPP people that we should shoot and kill galamseyers.

“Tell NDC that, no way. We won’t shoot them today or tomorrow. The truth is that God, who created the world, placed the gold under the ground, and it is the job of the government to establish community mining schemes for everybody to work peacefully.

“What we don’t like is for someone to mine on the water bodies because if we don’t get water to drink, we will die as a nation,” NAPO is heard saying in the viral video.

NDC calls for arrest of Napo over murder allegations against party

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the arrest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s running mate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, following his remarks accusing the NDC of involvement in the killing of pastors and spiritualists.

Speaking at a campaign rally, NAPO alleged that the NDC, while in power, was responsible for the deaths of religious figures and the destruction of mosques.

“They are the only people who kill pastors. They killed two pastors in Ghana. One of the pastors killed was Prophet Asare, and the other was Brother Amoako. They killed them in broad daylight. That was not even all; they killed a spiritualist, Nana Drobo, the one who invented the HIV drug. They killed him and left him in the bush. I’m not telling lies,” NAPO claimed.

He went on to add, “They are the ones who also demolish mosques. If you live in a Zongo and you vote for the NDC, when they come to power, they will destroy your mosques.”

These comments have sparked outrage within the NDC, prompting the party to call for NAPO’s arrest. Augustus Nana Akwesi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, in an interview with Neat FM on September 3, 2024, demanded that the police investigate these serious allegations.

“NAPO should have been picked up by the national security because if you can say on a campaign platform that the NDC killed pastors and spiritualists, and the national security is still in this country… So, if someone goes ahead and says the same thing, would the person be arrested?” Nana Akwesi questioned.

He further expressed frustration at the lack of action by authorities, stating, “In Accra, someone demolished the Big Six statue and NAPO has also accused the NDC of killing spiritualists, pastors, and others but the national security is not saying anything. We are just waiting for someone else to say something similar for us to see if there would be any form of arrest.”

Nana Akwesi emphasized that while the NDC desires peace, they would not tolerate being intimidated by such accusations. “Indeed, we want peace, but we won’t sit down and be intimidated because if the other half goes scot-free, we won’t allow that. Imagine if what he said was said by an NDC member, the person would have been arrested by now,” he added.

As tensions rise over NAPO’s comments, the NDC is calling for swift action by law enforcement to address the allegations and ensure fairness in political discourse.

  • Putting the spotlight on Alma Nana Pokua Opoku Prempeh; a valuable addition to the NPP 2024 campaign

Putting the spotlight on Alma Nana Pokua Opoku Prempeh; a valuable addition to the NPP 2024 campaign

It is emerging that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP might just be killing two birds with one stone with the selection of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (aka NAPO) as the party’s Vice Presidential Candidate.

This is because, by that single decision, the party is not only getting an election-winning Running Mate in NAPO but also another significant boost to its 2024 campaign, NAPO’s lovely wife, Mrs. Alma Nana Pokua Abena Adade Prempeh.

It appears that for the two major political parties, the 2024 campaign will be not only a contest for the Presidential Candidates but also a contest for their respective spouses, with the ever-sensational Mrs. Samira Bawumia leading the “onslaught” for the governing NPP and now supported by Mrs. Alma Opoku Prempeh.

It is yet to be seen whether the spouses of the opposition presidential and vice presidential candidates, Lordina Mahama and Mr Opoku Agyemang, can match Samira and Alma’s indomitable might.

Mrs. Samira Bawumia is no stranger to our body politics. Her ability to take on John Dramani Mahama and the NDC on governance, economy, and social justice is known to every Ghanaian, including children in primary schools.

However, when it comes to Alma Opoku Prempeh, thus far, very little is known about her by the generality of Ghanaians, particularly in the political milieu.

Who is she, and what does she bring to the table?

Alma Nana Pokua Abena Adade Prempeh is a Chartered Global Management Accountant with professional expertise in both operational and strategic finance, as well as a wealth of experience in various top commercial and charitable financial management positions in London in a period spanning over two decades.

She is the daughter of Justice NYB Adade, a former Attorney General in the Second Republic, under Prime Minister K.A Busia. Alma’s father is also a celebrated retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, who has been credited with many scholarly judicial decisions, including his landmark lead judgement in NPP v Attorney General (31st December Case), which outlawed the continuous celebration of the infamous 31st December dastardly coup, by the PNDC/NDC and their assigns.

Alma is a proud product of Accra Girls Senior High School; Ghana Institute of Languages; Weymouth College, UK; London South Bank University; and Manchester University College, UK, as well as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK.

Just like her husband, Mrs. Alma Opoku Prempeh is an articulate and outspoken woman, with a compassionate heart and a great passion for public service and community development through servant-leadership. Her vision includes leveraging on her professional expertise to enhance public service delivery in Ghana, and ensuring that our resources are effectively utilised for maximum returns.

Alma’s exploits at Morden College, a non-governmental organisation in London, where she worked for over a decade in a top management position, highlight her dedication to enhancing the lives of vulnerable populations through effective financial management and strategic planning.

Alma is indeed your go-to person when it comes to attending to the needs and general well-being of the vulnerable in society.

To conclude, if you were to ask what Mrs Opoku Prempeh brings to the table for the NPP and Ghana in general, you would be told that she brings decades of experience in public service, professionalism, topnotch communication prowess, selflessness, strategic thinking and planning, as well as results-orientated servant leadership.

These unique attributes make her a valuable addition to the NPP 2024 campaign. We are going to see a lot from her in this campaign season and beyond. Mrs Prempeh is going to demonstrate that she is more than worthy of the position of Second Lady of the Republic. So, as far as the 2024 campaign is concerned, the NDC is not only going to contend with Hajia Samira Bawumia but also Mrs Alma Opoku Prempeh. Only time will tell if the NDC can survive this.

Abroad-based podcaster Kelvin Taylor has been vocal about his concerns, suggesting that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo is not fit to campaign and should rather focus on his health over political ambitions.

In reaction to these concerns, Dr Opoku Prempeh has clarified that he is not unwell but in good health. He urged his supporters to disregard such rumours.

“No one should listen to them because I’m not sick, I’m fit and strong,” he is quoted to have said by Opera News in a report.

A Pro-NDC user on X (formerly Twitter) by the name Uncle Paa Kwesi has claimed that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has traveled to Germany for medical treatment.

According to the page, “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), running mate for NPP flys to Germany for medical treatment. Ghana is with you in our prayers”.

Although close sources within the NPP’s running mate campaign have refuted the claim, this X user has refused to back down on his unverified claim.

This assertion comes after some Ghanaians suggested that Dr Opoku Prempeh may be ill due to the recent change in his physical appearance.

Coffee-brown Pra River alarms Ghanaians over ‘failed’ galamsey fight

A video shared by Media General journalist, Berla Mundi, has highlighted the government’s inability to rid the country of illegal mining activities that continue to plague the country – destroying water bodies and taking human lives, as promised by President Akufo-Addo, who put his presidency on the line.

The footage shared on August 31, 2024, shows the Pra River’s water appearing deep brown, indicating high levels of contamination.

The video also depicted numerous chamfan machines—used for processing ore—lined up along the river, confirming their use by illegal miners.

The pollution of the Pra River due to illegal mining activities is causing severe repercussions that extend beyond the immediate destruction of the water source and the lack of potable water for nearby communities.

Recent developments reveal that the contaminated river water is now being used to irrigate crops, putting public health at significant risk.

A cocoa farmer from Twifo Praso in the Central Region disclosed this concerning practice during an interview with TV3’s Berla Mundi. He explained that the scarcity of clean water has compelled farmers to use the polluted Pra River as their only water source for both domestic and commercial purposes.

The harmful chemicals from mining operations, which have seeped into the river, will now contaminate crops. These crops, which are to be used for domestic consumption and export, are being tainted with toxic substances such as mercury, arsenic, and lead—elements used in mineral processing that are dangerous to both aquatic life and humans.

The impact on local water supply is dire. The management of Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central Region has reported a significant disruption in water services to Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas.

Residents in these communities are facing severe shortages, with taps running dry for days and forcing them to endure increasingly challenging conditions due to the disruption of their once-reliable water supply.

Presently, there is pressure on the government to relieve local authorities within this area of their duties as part of the government’s commitment to combat illegal mining.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the NPP’s running mate, has commended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his contributions to improving Ghanaians’ lives.

In a social media update following his trip to Techiman North, Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the positive impact of Bawumia’s initiatives, including the revamped NHIS, mobile phone-based ECG credit purchases, and the national ID system.

He emphasized that these advancements are a key reason for their robust support of Bawumia, aiming to preserve and build upon these gains.

His post shared via social media read, “Last night in Offuman, Techiman North, it was truly uplifting to hear about how Dr. Bawumia’s initiatives are simplifying lives. From the renewal of NHIS and the ability to purchase ECG credit via mobile phones to the implementation of a national ID system, these efforts are making a tangible difference.

Honour Busia by voting for Bawumia – Napo tells Wenchi residents

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO has urged the people of Wenchi in the Bono Region to honour the legacy of former Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia by supporting the NPP in the upcoming 2024 elections.

During a campaign visit to Wenchi, NAPO paid tribute to the late Dr. Busia, laying a wreath in his memory and calling on the community to secure a victory for the party.

Wenchi, a town with deep ties to the NPP’s political tradition, holds historical significance as the birthplace of Dr. Busia, a key figure in the formation of the Progress Party, which later evolved into the NPP.

NAPO emphasized that voting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, would be a fitting tribute to Dr. Busia’s contributions to the nation and the party.

Engaging with local chiefs, the clergy, Muslims, and residents during his tour, NAPO urged them to pray for the NPP and to provide guidance to the party in its service to the people.

He reminded the Wenchi constituency, traditionally an NPP stronghold until it was won by the NDC in 2020, of the need to reclaim the seat as a continuation of Dr. Busia’s legacy.

NAPO encouraged the residents to reflect on the achievements of the NPP government and to vote decisively for Dr. Bawumia and the party’s parliamentary candidate for the area, Kojo Frempong, in the December elections.

Mr. Frempong, in turn, expressed his dedication to reclaiming the seat for the NPP and called for the support of the chiefs and the people to ensure a resounding victory.

The Omanhene of Wenchi, Nana Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, praised NAPO for his contributions during his tenure in government and highlighted the challenges facing the community, appealing for continued government support to address these issues.

  • You would have been in jail by now if Atta Mills’ Ghost existed – Napo replies Mahama

You would have been in jail by now if Atta Mills’ Ghost existed – Napo replies Mahama

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has addressed a recent comment made by John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mahama had remarked that if Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, were alive, he would have slapped Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, for a statement he made regarding Nkrumah.

“If Nkrumah had a ghost, he would have slapped NAPO,” Mahama said during a rally.

However, speaking during a campaign event in Adugyama, located in the Ahafo Ano South East constituency of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Prempeh countered Mahama’s comment, asserting that if the late former president, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, had a ghost, Mahama would have been in jail.

“If Mills had a ghost, John Mahama would be in jail by now.”

His remark was met with enthusiastic applause from the gathered audience.

Dr. Prempeh is currently on a campaign tour across the Ashanti Region, promoting the NPP’s message of “Selfless Leadership and Bold Solutions for the Future.”

During his interactions, he has been highlighting what he describes as the poor performance of the John Mahama administration.

“We have a President, John Mahama, under whose watch Ghanaians slept in darkness for four years, but he thinks Ghanaians have forgotten about this record,” Dr. Prempeh stated.

Dr. Prempeh underscored that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,is the most capable leader to protect and advance key initiatives like the Free Senior High School program.

As part of his campaign efforts, Dr. Prempeh plans to visit all 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region, with the goal of rallying support in the party’s stronghold and driving a significant voter turnout on election day.

  • Four things NAPO said at NPP manifesto launch

Four things NAPO said at NPP manifesto launch

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) unveiled its manifesto for the December 7 general elections at a grand event in Takoradi, Western Region on On Sunday, August 18, 2024.

The launch, which took place at the Ghana Secondary Technical School, was attended by thousands of party members and supporters, including prominent figures such as President Akufo-Addo, Vice President and Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as NAPO, addressed the gathering, making several key points during his speech.

    Bawumia’s Integrity Affirmed

Dr. Opoku Prempeh strongly endorsed Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing his untainted record on corruption. He pointed out that throughout Dr. Bawumia’s political career, he has never been implicated in any corrupt activities.

This clean track record, according to NAPO, is a significant strength that makes Dr. Bawumia a trustworthy leader for Ghana. He urged Ghanaians to remember this when making their decision in the upcoming 2024 elections.

    A Call to Action

NAPO rallied NPP members to work diligently towards securing victory in the December 7 elections. He stressed the importance of this victory in allowing the party to continue its ongoing developmental agenda.

“We have general election to win, and this general elections we will win. With God all things are possible. This is a call to duty. Today’s manifesto launch is the show of our contest of ideas and policies that are going to serve as guiding light for his excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia when by God’s grace he assumes office on January 7. He promises us that he needs no honey moon and from January 7, he is going to start working for the people of Ghana.

“The NPP which he leads has a record of delivery. In 2016 and 2020, the NPP delivered on its manifesto. I do recall Dr. Bawumia calling to account for what we were doing and what so far, we had done in education sector. That led some of us to think deep, Mr President your work has shown that you are a man who honours his word. Based on the work you have done; I am sure Ghanaians are going to give us the mandate to continue from where we are,” NAPO said.

He also reflected on the NPP’s achievements in previous elections, expressing confidence that the party’s record of delivery would earn them another mandate from Ghanaians.

    Praise for Akufo-Addo’s Educational Reforms

NAPO lauded President Akufo-Addo for his significant contributions to the education sector. He highlighted the introduction of Free SHS and free TVET, the provision of IT resources, and the overall enhancement of education infrastructure.

He also recounted the improvement in WASSCE results, crediting these successes to the president’s commitment to education despite initial skepticism from critics.

“2016 election was a contest of ideas. When you talk about Free SHS and free TVET, you didn’t stop there. From early childhood care and new nurseries, you developed, you made sure that in the area of IT, every school gets a school laboratory which is in progress.

“You made sure that every teacher gets a laptop for I.T, and it is in progress. You made sure that every child in secondary school gets a laptop and it is in progress. Mr President when you assumed office in 2017, 40,000 Ghanaian students had passed the WASSCE but could not get their results because they couldn’t pay their examination fees.

“Before you came to office, for every hundred Ghanaian student that qualified to go to SHS, 35 could not go because they couldn’t afford it. For the 65 that went to secondary school, by the time of WASSCE, another 30 had dropped out and that is why it was only 800 students in school when you came. Even not all that 800 would have qualified or to would be able to stay through three years. As we speak, every child that goes to secondary school leaves with the best result ever.

“Mr President, the profound thing you did in education is that when the naysayers said it was not possible, you made it possible, when the naysayers said you were diluting education, you were lowering standards, the first batch of free SHS students stayed home five months because of COVID, and when they came back to school, and they sat for the WASSCE, the best result Ghana has had, 68% had aggregate A1, 8 subjects, which was the whole of West Africa, they for the first time also passed all the four core subjects.”

    Acknowledgment of Energy Sector Achievements

Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted the progress made in the energy sector under President Akufo-Addo, recalling the persistent power cuts during John Mahama’s tenure.

He praised the government for maintaining stable electricity, even under challenging circumstances, and for reducing electricity costs. He commended the president for demonstrating both competence and exceptional leadership in this area.

    Commitment to Serve

NAPO expressed his unwavering dedication to serving Dr. Bawumia and working hard to ensure the NPP retains power.

“I am a strong believer in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. I have worked more closely with him than many more would ever know. I believe in his ability and his knowledge. Surely, he is the man of the moment.

“I, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, am committed to serving him loyally to ensure his vision is translated into a mission and an action purpose for myself. I know his vision is for a brighter, better business-friendly country called Ghana, and I pledge to even work harder to realise this vision,” NAPO said.

Bawumia has never been accused, investigated for corruption in his public life – Napo jabs Mahama

The running mate to the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has lauded Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of being a man of integrity and dignity.

At the launch of the ruling party’s 2024 election manifesto, the former Energy Minister reiterated his remarks that suggest that the NPP flagbearer is incorruptible.

In what appears to be a jab at the flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh emphasised that Dr Bawumia has neither been accused nor investigated for corruption.

“I know that Dr Alhaji Bawumia. He is not corrupt and will not be corrupted. In his public life, Mr President, he has never been accused of [for] (sic) corruption and his public life, he has never been investigated for corruption,” he said while speaking to party faithful at Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Former President John Mahama since February 2020, has been investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecution for corruption in his role in the controversial Airbus scandal during his administration.

But Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng has revealed that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, played no role in the controversial Airbus scandal.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor confirmed this after revealing that the individual referred to as Government Official 1 by the UK court and Individual 1 by the US court in the Airbus scandal is former President John Mahama.

Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng made this known while briefing the media on the Office’s findings of the case after initiating investigations in February 2020.

Mahama has on several occasions refuted that he played a role in the Airbus scandal and further challenged the Akufo-Addo-led government to prosecute him should he be found guilty.

The airbus bribery scandal emerged after the previous Mahama government bought three Military Airplanes from Airbus.

Then Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu slammed the deals as both questionable and non-transparent, adding that the contract sums, over 70 million euros and over 100 million dollars, had been padded by the government.

The matter gained international recognition and England’s Crown Court in Southwark in its judgement highlighted that Airbus, through intermediaries, attempted to bribe officials linked to a high-ranking Ghanaian government figure between 2011 and 2015 to secure the sale of two C295 aircraft.

Initially, Airbus planned to pay a 5 million euro bribe disguised as a commission to an insider who had close ties to a powerful Ghanaian official overseeing the aircraft purchase deals.

Look beyond current hardships when voting – NAPO to Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has criticized the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration for the country’s current issues.

Speaking at a mini rally at the Effiakuma Police Park in anticipation of the party’s 2024 manifesto launch on Sunday, Dr. Opoku Prempeh condemned the NDC as a relic of the past and positioned the NPP as the party of the future.

He asserted that the NPP is poised to rescue Ghanaians from the problems left by the NDC.

“Don’t vote based on hardship alone. If the current challenges had occurred under NDC’s leadership, I assure you it would have been even more severe.

“During his presidency, without the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war, he threatened to withhold salaries from teachers and nurses. So, I ask, what would he do in today’s circumstances?”

Several other party leaders and parliamentary candidates also addressed the crowd, underscoring the NPP’s accomplishments and the importance of a decisive victory.

Kennedy Agyapong encouraged unity within the party despite personal frustrations, urging supporters to set aside grievances for the sake of the party’s success.

“I understand the bitterness and frustration that many of you feel, but I can confidently say that I’m the most frustrated person among all. However, we’ve put our differences aside for the love of the party.

The Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, called on Ghanaians to support the vision of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh.

The NPP’s manifesto launch is set for Sunday.

  • Nkrumah would have knocked ‘disrespectful’ NAPO down if ghosts were still powerful – Mahama

Nkrumah would have knocked ‘disrespectful’ NAPO down if ghosts were still powerful – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has taken issue with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, the running mate for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over his controversial remark referring to “Your Kwame Nkrumah.”

Mahama emphasized that Ghanaian customs and traditions emphasize respecting the dead, and speaking ill of them is a violation of these norms.

He pointed out that while the living can defend themselves against insults or accusations, the deceased cannot.

Mahama also remarked that if it were in ancient times when it was believed that ghosts had power, Nkrumah’s ghost would have likely sought retribution against NAPO.

“The running mate for NPP when they went and introduced him to Otumfuo; Otumfuo said we brought you up because you are part of the Manhyia Palace and we know we brought you up well. But we hear you are arrogant. We hope that you prove people wrong.

“As soon as he left there, not up to 3 hours, he went and said, ‘Mo Kwame Nkrumah nu’ – that your Kwame Nkrumah. That is a very disrespectful thing to say about the founder of this nation and especially a founder who is no longer alive. You can insult me because I can respond because I’m alive.

“You can insult me because I can respond because I’m alive, but in our tradition, you don’t say evil things about the dead. You don’t disrespect the dead because they are not alive to respond to you.

In the past, ghosts were powerful. As he said that, Nkrumah’s ghost would have knocked him down, but now the ghosts have all become disarmed,” John Dramani Mahama said at a campaign rally.

Mahama’s remarks were in response to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s reference to the nation’s first president as “your Nkrumah” during a political rally in Kumasi in July.

NAPO made this remark while contrasting the accomplishments of the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with those of Kwame Nkrumah.

“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” NAPO said.

These comments outraged many Ghanaians, who condemned him. Subsequently, NAPO issued an apology and explained that it was not his intention to disrespect Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Stay in your lane, be the “dead goat” you are – NAPO to Mahama

The NPP’s Running Mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has advised the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama to continue with his “dead goat syndrome” mentality.

Speaking to NPP supporters in Juaso, Ashanti Region, NAPO criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s actions during the 2016 and 2020 elections, arguing that they demonstrated a lack of genuine concern for Ghana’s progress.

“To make matters worse, he said he is a dead goat who was not afraid of knife. Since no dead goat has ever come back to life, he should remain so,” he added.

He highlighted the cancellation of nursing and teacher trainee allowances and advised Ghanaians to avoid excessive phone charging to ensure stable electricity.

Recalling a 2015 statement by the former President, NAPO reminded the audience of Mahama’s claim of being unaffected by strike threats, which he termed his “dead-goat syndrome.”

Mahama had expressed indifference to labor unrest and political threats.

NAPO emphasized that despite Mahama’s later clarification that his remarks were a response to frustrations over petroleum price deregulation nothing significant has changed about his stance.

“To make matters worse, he said he is a dead goat who was not afraid of knife. Since no dead goat has ever come back to life, he should remain so,” he added.

NAPO cannot be arrogant, incompetent and want to lead this country – Basintale

Deputy National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the running mate of the flagbearer of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for what he described as a disrespectful remark towards the legacy of former President John Evans Atta Mills.

During the official launch of the Ashanti Regional NPP Campaign Working Committees and Women’s Conference in Kumasi, Dr. Prempeh spoke about Ghana’s former presidents and the roles they played in the country’s development.

He acknowledged the contributions of the late Dr. Hilla Limann, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Agyekum Kufuor.

However, when referring to the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Dr. Prempeh made a comment in the Akan dialect that has been perceived as disrespectful.

He said, “Baako a no owu ye no,” which translates to “the one who even died.”

This remark has sparked outrage, with Basintale accusing NAPO of being arrogant, incompetent, and unfit to lead the country.

“NAPO cannot be arrogant, incompetent and want to lead this country,” Basintale stated in an interview on TV3.

Napo is young and can help Bawumia do the job – Suame MP

Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed confidence in Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s ability to effectively support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate in the 2024 elections.

The Suame MP highlighted NAPO’s youth, energy, and competence as key factors that make him the ideal choice for the role.

In a recent interview on Nhyira FM’s Kroyimu Nsem show with Nana Kwadwo Jantuah, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained why he was not selected as Bawumia’s running mate, pointing to his age as a significant factor.

“I would not say it was a rejection, but looking at my age, it would not be the best to be appointed as a running mate. After eight years, I would have less energy to continue as a leader of the party,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs emphasized that the role of a running mate demands significant energy and mobility, qualities he believes NAPO possesses in abundance.

“My age wouldn’t permit me for the running mate bid, but NAPO is young and best fit for the job. This running mate thing requires a lot of energy and competence to help the flagbearer, and NAPO can perfectly do the job,” he added.

The Suame MP also addressed the distinct leadership style that Dr. Bawumia would bring to the presidency, noting that Bawumia’s vision, though shaped by his experience in the current administration, will be uniquely his own.

“Every President has a unique vision before coming into office. Although Bawumia has worked with Nana Addo, he will have his own way of doing things, so his vision is different from that of the President. This is why he has promised to continue some of the works of the President and make changes to those he thinks don’t align with his vision,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu remarked.

Further insights into the decision behind Bawumia’s choice of NAPO as his running mate were provided by Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni in his book The President Ghana Never Got.

Manasseh revealed that NAPO, who had been preparing to contest for the NPP flagbearer position himself, chose to support Bawumia instead, a move that greatly influenced Bawumia’s decision to select him as his running mate.

“When Bawumia reared his head, NAPO told Bawumia that he had been preparing for a long time to contest, but since Bawumia was contesting, he would step back and support his candidacy. Bawumia was touched by that gesture and earmarked NAPO for the running mate position,” the book states.

Despite concerns about NAPO’s perceived arrogance, his political influence and strong connection to the Ashanti Region made him a strategic choice for the role.

The NPP’s running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has come out strongly in defense of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserting that he is entirely free from corruption and will remain so.

In a discussion with investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, following the presentation of Azure’s latest book, Dr. Opoku Prempeh praised Dr. Bawumia’s integrity and genuine dedication to the country.

“The flagbearer I serve is not corrupt, he has never been corrupt, and he never will be,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserted.

Manasseh Azure’s new publication, The President We Never Had, delves into the current administration’s various events, including allegations of corruption.

The book also features a chapter on Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s selection as the NPP running mate, highlighting the behind-the-scenes efforts involved.

During the book presentation, Manasseh Azure noted, “This book sheds light on some of the key events that have occurred in this government, from the early days of the administration to the present.”

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, pleased to receive the book, committed to reading it in full and sharing his perspective.

“I love reading, and I will definitely go through the entire book and share my thoughts with you. I’m also working on a few books to tell my story as Education Minister and Energy Minister,” he added.

  • Napo trolled on Twitter again for ‘disrespecting’ another dead president

Napo trolled on Twitter again for ‘disrespecting’ another dead president

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the running mate of NPP’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has come under heavy criticism on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) following a recent political remark that many deemed disrespectful to a deceased former president.

During the official launch of the Ashanti Regional NPP Campaign Working Committees and Women’s Conference in Kumasi, Dr. Prempeh acknowledged the contributions of past Ghanaian presidents, including the late Dr. Hilla Limann, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Agyekum Kufuor.

However, his reference to the late President John Evans Atta-Mills sparked outrage. Speaking in the Akan dialect, NAPO remarked, “Baako na owu ye no,” which translates to “the one who even died.”

This comment quickly drew backlash from netizens, who condemned the former Energy Minister for what they perceived as a lack of respect.

One user wrote, “This guy doesn’t know how to talk at all. He doesn’t even appear pleasing to neutrals. Very bad public communication skills.” Another added, “He does not respect himself, so how can he show respect to Ghanaians… It’s impossible… Because of this man’s behavior, the NPP has failed in advance…”

A particularly pointed criticism read, “Those asking how it is insulting—if someone describes President Kufuor as ‘baako na ɔte wheel chair mu,’ how will it sound? Why do we defend any rubbish all in the name of political affiliation?”

This is not the first time Dr. Opoku Prempeh has faced criticism for his remarks.

During his introduction in Kumasi on July 9, NAPO claimed that President Akufo-Addo had outperformed Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which also led to widespread criticism. While some disagreed with the comparison itself, others took issue with the way it was presented.

Following the backlash, NAPO publicly apologized for his statements, though the chiefs of Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s birthplace, insisted on a personal apology before accepting it. During a visit to the Nzema area, NAPO made a stop in Nkroful to personally apologize for his earlier remarks.

“I lived with Nzema people when I was growing up. Nzema people and I are one people. I will never disrespect Nkrumah in any way. Anybody who attempts to disrespect Nkrumah will face the consequences of his actions. Nkrumah has done so much for the country. I was misconstrued, but I apologized to Ghanaians, and I stand here before you to apologize for my comments again. Forgive me, we’re all one people,” he stated.

In response, the chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua, accepted the apology, stating, “NAPO’s comments received wide condemnation from Ghanaians because it was uncalled for. We hail the actions of Ghanaians, we thank them. We need to recognize that Nkrumah did a great job for the country… Today, he has asked for forgiveness from the chiefs; this is what we have all been waiting for, and so we accept his apology.”

Prior to this, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had also advised Dr. Opoku Prempeh to ensure that his actions did not make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia regret choosing him as his running mate. The Otumfuo also urged NAPO to prove his critics wrong by displaying humility and diligence in his role.

“Don’t let Dr. Bawumia regret the decision to make you his running mate. You should be diligent and humble and listen to instructions from him. Be humble and do the work diligently for me. Have a listening ear and don’t upstage your boss. I’ve heard people say you are arrogant, and I question myself because since your childhood, I’ve not known you to be arrogant. I won’t agree with what people are saying, but it is up to you to prove them wrong. We will pray for you to ensure that what God has for you will become a reality,” Otumfuo advised.

‘The one who even died’ – Netizens descend on Napo for ‘disrespecting’ Atta-Mills

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is being chastised on social media platform X for a recent political comment.

Speaking at the official launch of the Ashanti Regional NPP Campaign Working Committees and Women’s Conference in Kumasi, Dr Prempeh made reference to former presidents who have served Ghana and the role they played.

He acknowledged that the late Dr Hilla Limann, Jerry John Rawling, and John Agyekeum Kufuor all played a role in Ghana’s development.

In his attempt to recognise the late John Evans Fifii Atta-Mills, Dr Prempeh preceded with a comment that has been deemed disrespectful to the memory of the former statesman.

Speaking in the Akan dialect, he said, “Baako an owu ye no” to wit “the one who even died”.

Netizens have descended heavily on the former Energy Minister while recounting a recent controversy Dr Prempeh stirred after passing a derogatory remark while comparing Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah to President Akufo-Addo.

“This guy doesn’t know how to talk at all. He doesn’t even appear pleasing to neutrals. Very bad public communication skill,” a user wrote.

Another said, “He does not respect himself so how can he show respect to Ghanaians… Is impossible… Because of this man’s behaviour, the NPP has failed in advance…”

“Those asking how it is insulting no if someone describes President Kuffuor as baako na )te wheel chair mu mo aah, how will it sound? Why do we defend any rubbish all in the name of political affiliation?” another wrote.

During his introduction in Kumasi on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, claimed that President Akufo-Addo had outperformed Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which led to widespread criticism.

While some people completely disagreed with the comparison, others took issue with the way it was presented.

Following the backlash, NAPO issued a public apology for his statements. However, the chiefs of Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s birthplace, insisted that he apologize in person before they would accept it.

During his visit to the Nzema area, NAPO stopped by Nkroful to personally apologize for his remarks.

“I lived with Nzema people when I was growing up. Nzema people and I are one people. I will never disrespect Nkrumah in any way, anybody who attempts to disrespect Nkrumah will face the consequences of his actions.

“Nkrumah has done so much for the country. I was misconstrued, but I apologised to Ghanaians and I stand here before you to apologise for my comments again, forgive me, we’re all one people,” NAPO said.

In response, the chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua accepted the apology.

“NAPO’s comments received wide condemnation from Ghanaians because it was uncalled for. We hail the actions of Ghanaians, we thank them. We need to recognise that Nkrumah did a great job for the country.

“We’re a peaceful people, we don’t like violence, and we don’t want a situation where chaos will erupt in Ghana because of the Nzema people. We heard that NAPO apologised to Ghanaians for his comments. But he needed to come to Nzema to personally apologise to the traditional leaders and re-affirm his regrets.

“Today, he has asked for forgiveness from the chiefs, this is what we have all been waiting for, and so we accept his apology.”

Prior to this, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II advised Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh not to make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia regret his decision in choosing him as his running mate and also prove others wrong for describing him as arrogant.

“Don’t let Dr Bawumia regret the decision to make you his running mate. You should be diligent and humble and listen to instructions from him. Be humble and do the work diligently for me. Have a listening ear and don’t upstage your boss.

“I’ve heard people say you are arrogant and I question myself because since your childhood I’ve not known you to be arrogant. I won’t agree with what people are saying but it is up to you to prove them wrong. We will pray for you to ensure that what God has for you will be made reality.”
