Were you expecting NAPO to “hero-worship Nkrumah”? – NPP’s Ellen Daaku to critics

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has defended Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh against criticism directed at his remarks about President Akufo-Addo’s contributions to Ghana’s development compared to past leaders, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking on the Wednesday, July 10, 2024, edition of GTV’s Breakfast Show, Ellen Ama Daaku justified Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s comments within the context of an election campaign and the NPP’s platform.

“It depends on the situation; he is speaking to his people; he is speaking to the NPP. We are looking at moving into an election; he was on a platform. Were you expecting him to go and extol the virtues of Kwame Nkrumah, Jerry Rawlings, or John Mahama?” she questioned.

She further elaborated that while some may view Kwame Nkrumah as superior, the NPP as a party does not share that perspective.

Defending Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s role and achievements under President Akufo-Addo, she highlighted his leadership in education and energy sectors, attributing his success to the opportunities provided by President Akufo-Addo.

“He doesn’t think that way, and I don’t think that way. I think Kwame Nkrumah was a president of Ghana; he led us to independence, but definitely, he has his issues. So, you don’t want us to discuss it? You want everybody to hero-worship Kwame Nkrumah?

“When it’s Kwame Nkrumah‘s birthday, when it’s Independence Day, we have discussions on his legacy and what he has done. You agree with what he has done; I agree with what I have done. The NPP, by ideology, by everything, is not in the same lane with Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP values.

“So, if an NPP running mate says that the president—let’s remember that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the president who has given NAPO the leeway to do everything—he practically made him; gave him an opportunity to serve in his government in two very important positions as Minister of Education, where he implemented his flagship program, and then moved him to the Ministry of Energy. And for me, and a lot of Ghanaians, NAPO has done exceptionally well.

“So, if he is standing on the platform of the NPP on his unveiling as the running mate, are you expecting him to go and hero-worship Kwame Nkrumah?” she questioned.

The energy minister faced severe criticism following accusations of disrespecting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah during his introduction as the running mate of NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at a gathering of party leaders and supporters on Tuesday, June 9, 2024, in Kumasi, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh emphasized that President Akufo-Addo has surpassed even Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in advancing the country’s development.

“It has never happened in the history of Ghana. If President Akufo-Addo retires, I can hit my chest and state that since the nation’s inception in 1957, there has not been a president who has helped the state more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“I am saying that from 1957 to now, whether you pick ‘your’ Kwame Nkrumah… there is nobody who has led Ghana and protected the country or developed Ghana more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he stated.

NAPO holds no animosity towards Kwame Nkrumah – Kwadaso MP

Member of Parliament for Kwadaso Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has clarified that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, holds no animosity towards Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Professor Nyarko’s statement came in response to Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comparison of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s accomplishments with those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his introduction in Kumasi on Tuesday, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, asserted that no president, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana as extensively as President Akufo-Addo.

However, during an interview with the media on Wednesday, Professor Nyarko encouraged Ghanaians to concentrate on the positive impacts that NAPO can bring.

“NAPO and the government have nothing against Nkrumah. We should focus on what he can do for the NPP to win power and break the 8.”

Referring to Mr. Opoku Prempeh as a valuable asset, the NPP MP emphasized NAPO’s significance to the nation and urged him to heed Otumfuo’s advice.

“Ghanaians should forgive him because he has nothing against Nkrumah,” Mr. Nyarko added. He believes that NAPO will reflect on his statements and address the concerns raised.

“Let us concentrate on the good things he has done in the ministry and what he will do for the future,” he concluded.

Apologize to Ghanaians for disrespecting Nkrumah – NDC to NAPO

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has demanded an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This demand follows Dr. Prempeh’s controversial remarks about Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During a rally at the Kumasi Jubilee Park on July 9, Dr. Prempeh, also known as NAPO, declared, “No president since independence has developed Ghana more than President Akufo-Addo; not even your Kwame Nkrumah.”

This statement has sparked widespread criticism and public backlash.

Critics have questioned Dr. Prempeh’s disregard for the advice of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to avoid actions that could cause regret for Dr. Bawumia in choosing him as his running mate.

Speaking on GhanAkoma, Nana Akwasi described the Energy Minister’s comments as disrespectful and arrogant.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh failed to heed the advice of his uncle, the Asantehene, who is also the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom. During the event, I had indications that he paid his school fees. Despite being only three kilometers from the Manhyia Palace to the Jubilee Park, Dr. Prempeh reinforced the perception of his arrogance by disparaging Ghana’s first President in an arrogant posture,” Nana Akwasi remarked.

He further urged, “We ask that Dr. Muhammadu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh issue an unqualified apology to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the family of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, all former Presidents of Ghana, and the general public for the disrespect, impunity, and arrogance.”

Bawumia’s selection of NAPO the genesis of his campaign doom – NDC’s Osei Akoto

Prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress, Henry Osei Akoto, has ridiculed the Bawumia/NAPO ticket for the upcoming December elections.

The former NDC National Organizer aspirant suggested that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was deliberately chosen as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate to hinder his chances of winning.

Expressing his opinion on his official X account, Henry Osei Akoto sarcastically said, “I’m fully convinced Bawumia selected Napo to finish off his campaign, kwatakwata,” accompanied by laughing emojis.

His remark follows Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s statements made during his unveiling at Jubilee Park in Kumasi on June 9.

In his address to party members, NAPO praised the accomplishments of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, claiming that no president in the nation’s history, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed the country as significantly as the current president.

“Since independence from 1957 until today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo. I say from 1957 until today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo,” he said.

He has since come under heavy backlash from the public, as Ghanaians claim his statement was disrespectful to the revered Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

  • Lies! Complete lies – Dr. Abbey descends on NAPO’s ‘no hunger under Akufo-Addo’ comments

Lies! Complete lies – Dr. Abbey descends on NAPO’s ‘no hunger under Akufo-Addo’ comments

Renowned broadcaster Dr. Randy Abbey has taken issue with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over his assertion that there has been no hunger in Ghana during the eight years of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Dr. Abbey argued that NAPO’s statement cannot be accurate, citing multiple news reports of food shortages in Senior High Schools across the country.

Speaking on his Good Morning Ghana programme on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Dr. Abbey expressed surprise that NAPO would make such a claim.

“No, it’s a complete lie. I mean, we all live in this country. We know the problems with food. Headmasters are calling on parents to provide food, old students to provide food. Students don’t have food to eat.

“These were things that were on the front pages of newspapers, were discussed on programmes extensively over a period, to the extent that during that period, heads of institutions were soliciting for food from parents and old students were never sanctioned by the GES or the Ministry of Education, contrary to others who were sanctioned for doing things,” he said.

He added, “This is just a year or so ago, schools everywhere, parents were being asked to contribute to feeding children. So why would anybody lie like that?”

    What NAPO said:

NAPO, during his initial remarks at his unveiling as the running mate of NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, asserted that it is only under the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that Ghana has not experienced hunger.

“God has blessed the NPP party. Anybody who says God has not blessed us is a liar. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the only president under whose 8 years of reign there has been no hunger, am I lying? For 8 years, there has been no hunger in Ghana,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He added, “While the whole world was experiencing hunger, Ghana had food. Let us give thanks to God for what He has done for our party.”

  • I am disrespectful because I spoke the truth – Napo defends ‘Nkrumah comment’

I am disrespectful because I spoke the truth – Napo defends ‘Nkrumah comment’

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr Bawumia’s presidential running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has doubled down on his assertion that no Ghanaian president has achieved as much as President Nana Akufo-Addo.

This statement, made during his coronation on Tuesday, July 9, has stirred significant controversy and backlash within the political community.

Napo, as he is popularly known, sparked outrage when he claimed that President Akufo-Addo’s developmental achievements surpass those of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Many have demanded a retraction and apology, arguing that the comparison is disrespectful and historically inaccurate.

Despite the uproar, Dr. Opoku Prempeh remains steadfast in his opinion.

During a courtesy call on Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Omanhene of the Wasa Amenfi Traditional Area at Wassa Akropong in the Western North Region, Napo reiterated his stance.

He insisted that his comments reflect the truth and criticized the current political climate where, according to him, honesty is often labeled as disrespect while deceit is celebrated.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh expressed his long-held desire to visit Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim, noting the significance of finally making the trip.

He thanked the chief for his prayers and support during his inauguration and emphasized the critical need to reintegrate chiefs into Ghanaian politics in a manner that respects their traditional authority and roles.

Napo clarified that his call was not for chiefs to engage in partisan politics but to be recognized as vital partners in national and local development efforts.

He echoed the conviction of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, that traditional leaders should be seen as essential contributors to the country’s progress.

During the visit, Dr. Opoku Prempeh also introduced Ernest Acheampong, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Wasa Amenfi, and sought the chief’s prayers and support for his candidacy.

The controversy over Napo’s comments has seen notable figures weigh in, including the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which condemned the comparison as an attempt to rewrite history. Kwame Jantuah, the party’s Political Affairs Chairman, questioned the basis of Napo’s claim, highlighting Dr. Nkrumah’s unparalleled contributions, such as the Akosombo Dam, Tema Harbour, and numerous factories and institutions still benefiting the nation today.

Former President John Dramani Mahama also criticized the comparison, describing it as misguided and insulting to the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah.

He urged the NPP to avoid stretching comparisons back to Nkrumah’s era and instead, challenge their record against more recent administrations, including his own.

Napo’s comments continue to fuel debate on the achievements and legacy of past and present leaders, reflecting deep-seated sentiments about the country’s developmental trajectory.

  • Has Nana Addo been named the Millennium Gentleman of the Century? – CPP quizzes NPP

Has Nana Addo been named the Millennium Gentleman of the Century? – CPP quizzes NPP

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has strongly condemned the recent statements made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), regarding the legacy of Ghana’s first president and founder of the CPP, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his official unveiling on Tuesday, Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, claimed that the achievements of President Akufo-Addo surpassed those of Dr. Nkrumah, a statement that has sparked widespread controversy and backlash across the country.

Many Ghanaians have accused NAPO of attempting to rewrite history and diminish the monumental contributions of Dr. Nkrumah.

Speaking to JoyNews, the CPP’s Political Affairs Chairman, Kwame Jantuah, questioned the validity of NAPO’s claims and defended the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah.

“Has Nana Addo been named the Millennium Gentleman of the Century? Does Nana Addo have his statue at the OAU building? Does Nana Addo have a mausoleum that shows who he was and what he did for this country? Has Nana Addo fought for the independence of Ghana? The factories Nana Addo claims he set up, can any of them compare to Nkrumah’s factories? So how can you compare the two? How? From time immemorial, the loans that we took, does it amount to what Nana Addo has taken? So what was he talking about?” Jantuah quizzed.

Jantuah expressed bewilderment over why NAPO would even consider comparing Dr. Nkrumah to President Akufo-Addo, implying that such a comparison is not only inappropriate but also unfounded.

“Why the comparison? Is it because they are scared of Akufo-Addo?” he asked.

In his remarks, Jantuah advised NAPO to focus on his campaign message and avoid engaging in what he termed as propaganda. He urged NAPO to address the pressing issues facing the country and outline his plans to improve the state of the economy and support his potential role as Vice President, should the NPP win the upcoming elections.

“He should come and tell Ghanaians how he sees the state of our economy, what he is prepared as a Vice President – if NPP wins the elections, to do to help his boss,” Jantuah stated.

The CPP’s condemnation adds to the growing disapproval from various quarters of the political spectrum.

There has never been ‘dumsor’ and there will never be, due to NAPO’s excellence as Energy Minister – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has asserted that under the leadership of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as Energy Minister, Ghana has effectively put an end to the recurring issue of power outages, locally referred to as ‘Dumsor.’

Speaking at the grand unveiling of NAPO as the running mate for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the president emphasized that the country has maintained a stable power supply due to NAPO’s exemplary performance.

“There has never been dumsor and there will never be due to NAPO’s excellence as Energy Minister,” President Akufo-Addo stated firmly, countering claims that the power crisis has resurged. “Yes, there have been a few occasions, but he has done his best to ensure that power in our country was online.”

During the unveiling event at Kumasi Jubilee Park on Tuesday, July 9, the President highlighted his pivotal role in preparing Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his current position.

By assigning him transformative initiatives, including the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, Akufo-Addo believes he set the stage for NAPO’s successful tenure as Energy Minister.

“I knew he could do it; that is why I assigned that task to him, and he executed it beautifully. He also did remarkably well when I made him Energy Minister,” the President said, praising NAPO’s capabilities and contributions.

The event, attended by the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked the formal introduction of Dr. Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of the NPP’s flagbearer.

The Asantehene praised NAPO for his hard work and modesty, attributing these qualities to his upbringing within the royal family of Asanteman.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also underscored the significance of loyalty and humility, urging NAPO to remain supportive of Dr. Bawumia. “Don’t let Bawumia regret choosing you,” he advised. “Be humble, listen to him, and do as he says.”

Dr. Bawumia, who formally informed the National Officers of the NPP about his selection of Dr. Opoku Prempeh on July 1, 2024, received unanimous approval from the party’s National Executive Council.

This decision has been met with enthusiasm, particularly among the people of the Ashanti Region, who are proud to see a royal from Asanteman chosen as the running mate.

  • Akufo-Addo has done more for Ghana than Kwame Nkrumah – Napo

Akufo-Addo has done more for Ghana than Kwame Nkrumah – Napo

The running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has stirred discussions with his bold assertion that no Ghanaian president, including the esteemed Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana as significantly as the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaking during his official unveiling in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, extolled President Akufo-Addo’s developmental strides and transformative leadership, highlighting accomplishments he believes are unparalleled in Ghana’s history.

“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 to now, if you take your Kwame Nkrumah, no one has become president who has protected Ghana and moved it forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” NAPO declared.

He emphasized the substantial progress Ghana has made under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership across various sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the economy.

He specifically highlighted the Free SHS policy and the One District, One Factory initiative as key policies that have garnered widespread acclaim for their positive impact on national development.

According to NAPO, these initiatives are testament to President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians and fostering sustainable development.

He asserted that the President’s accomplishments have set a new benchmark in the country’s political history.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s remarks have sparked both praise and criticism, with some lauding his recognition of President Akufo-Addo’s efforts, while others argue that comparing current achievements to those of past leaders, particularly Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, is unwarranted and unacceptable.

  • You have 24 hrs to apologize for comparing Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah – CPP to NAPO

You have 24 hrs to apologize for comparing Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah – CPP to NAPO

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has called for an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for comparing President Akufo-Addo to Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

At his unveiling at Kumasi’s Jubilee Park on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh who is the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserted that President Akufo-Addo has surpassed all previous Ghanaian presidents in developing the country, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“I can boldly say that if the history of Ghana is told from 1957, we have never had a president that has helped Ghana more than Nana Akufo-Addo. I mean from 1957, even including your Kwame Nkrumah, none of them has protected Ghana and developed the country more than Nana Akufo-Addo,” he said at his official unveiling event at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9, 2024.

Dr Opoku Prempeh stressed that, “President Akufo-Addo has developed this country to the admiration of all. Therefore, we will not allow what happened in 2008 to repeat itself. It will be most appropriate for Nana Akufo-Addo to hand over to his junior brother, Dr Bawumia.”

Earlier, Dr. Opoku Prempeh was formally introduced to his uncle, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. During the ceremony, the Asantehene advised his nephew to shed the arrogant reputation attributed to him by his critics.

But in a statement reacting to this, the CPP said “The Convention People’s Party calls on the Honourable Minister, within 24 hours, to do the ‘Honourable’ thing for the sake of the Country’s image, and immediately resign from all Governmental and political positions, and issue an immediate apology and retraction.

“Failing which the party calls on His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to withdraw the Hon. Minister from his position as Minister of Energy, and also calls on His Excellency Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw him as his Vice Presidential candidate, for the sake of the Country’s image, and its long term political and economic fortunes. Ghanaians and Nkrumaist’s worldwide, will have no choice but to hit the streets to register their displeasure if the above, or similar measures, are not immediately enforced within 24 hours.

“As the popular saying goes, “one who puts on his armour should not boast like one who takes it off”, there is an election to be fought, albeit at the ballot box, and it would serve the sitting Government well to heed the voice of the people, lest their imminent electoral defeat becomes even worse than it is predicted to be.”

  • Napo didn’t communicate what he meant to say about Nkrumah – Fiifi Boafo

Napo didn’t communicate what he meant to say about Nkrumah – Fiifi Boafo

Spokesperson for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Fiifi Boafo, has addressed the controversy surrounding NAPO’s recent comparison of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s achievements to those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Boafo defended NAPO’s remarks, describing them as a subjective opinion rather than a deliberate disrespect towards Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“It’s a subjective opinion. It was not his intention to disrespect Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. How you wish to communicate something does not always mean exactly what you wanted to say,” Mr. Boafo stressed.

NAPO, during his unveiling in Kumasi, had remarked that no President, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana as significantly as President Akufo-Addo.

This statement drew criticism from various quarters, including former President John Mahama, who termed it as unfortunate.

Mr. Boafo clarified that NAPO’s comparison was not intended to compete with Nkrumah’s legacy but rather to highlight achievements within the current political context, focusing particularly on the contrast between the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Nkrumah is not in any competition. Our focus is on Mahama and Bawumia. If there is any comparison, it should be between Jane Naana and NAPO on education,” Mr. Boafo emphasized.

He further explained that NAPO’s remarks were aimed at contrasting the policies and achievements of the NPP and the NDC, emphasizing that any mention of Nkrumah was incidental to this political comparison.

“The mention of Nkrumah was just a comparison, not made with any malice. He was referring to the NDC, as the NPP is competing with them, and not to concentrate on former President Nkrumah,” Mr. Boafo added.

The spokesperson concluded by asserting that NAPO’s statement should be viewed within the context of political discourse rather than as a deliberate attempt to undermine the legacy of Ghana’s first President.

He urged the public to consider the broader political implications and intentions behind NAPO’s remarks as the election season approaches.

  • Napo will give his communicators a lot of work to do – Prof. Gyampo

Napo will give his communicators a lot of work to do – Prof. Gyampo

Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Political Scientist at the University of Ghana has cautioned Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as Napo, the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to be mindful of his remarks after his controversial comments about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Napo, recently unveiled as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate in the Ashanti Region, faced criticism for comparing President Nana Akufo-Addo’s developmental achievements unfavorably to those of Dr. Nkrumah during a speech in Kumasi.

While addressing party supporters in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, Dr Opoku Prempeh praised President Akufo-Addo, claiming that, ‘Not even Kwame Nkrumah developed Ghana like him.’

In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof. Gyampo condemned Napo’s remarks as unnecessary and disrespectful.

He emphasized that Dr. Nkrumah, a global icon and pivotal figure in Ghana’s history, deserves respect for his significant contributions to the nation.

Gyampo stressed the importance of diplomatic and respectful communication, particularly in public statements that can influence public opinion and shape historical narratives. He warned that insensitive remarks such as Napo’s could create significant challenges for party communicators, who may need to engage in extensive damage control efforts.

“Ultimately, the orientation and beliefs of the audience should guide the approach. I’m still wondering whether this aligns with the complementarity Dr Mahamudu Bawumia seeks. Yes, his running mate may complement him in terms of hard work and forthrightness, but is the manner in which he expresses this forthrightness truly complementary? It can be both advantageous and disadvantageous, depending on where one finds himself.”

Reflecting on cultural norms, Gyampo shared a personal anecdote about differing communication styles, highlighting the contrast between Western openness and African traditions of respect towards elders and historical figures.

“When I was a student in the US, a student openly told our professor he was being stupid. To them, it was normal. I was very worried because, as an African, one cannot call a professor stupid, nor speak to elders in such a manner.”

He concluded by stressing the importance of considering the Ghanaian context when Dr Bawumia’s running mate speaks. “Otherwise, he will give his communicators a lot of work to do.”

  • Napo’s dismissive description of ‘iconic’ Nkrumah was unnecessary condescension – Prof. Gyampo

Napo’s dismissive description of ‘iconic’ Nkrumah was unnecessary condescension – Prof. Gyampo

Political scientist Ransford Gyampo from the University of Ghana has strongly criticized recent remarks made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), regarding Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The comments were delivered during Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s unveiling as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the Ashanti Region.

During a speech to party supporters in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh lauded President Nana Akufo-Addo, asserting that “Not even Kwame Nkrumah developed Ghana like him.”

In response, Professor Ransford Gyampo, in an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, expressed strong disapproval of the remarks, deeming them unnecessary and dismissive.

He emphasized Dr. Nkrumah’s global stature as an icon and a pivotal figure in Ghana’s history, referring to him as the “president of the whole century.”

Mr Gyampo cautioned against such derogatory language towards historical figures, stressing the importance of diplomatic and respectful discourse, especially in public statements that can influence public opinion and historical narrative.

“We need to differentiate between being assertive and being tactful,” Gyampo remarked, warning that insensitive remarks could require extensive damage control efforts from party communicators, invoking the colloquial expression “them go explain Taya” used on social media.

Drawing on a personal anecdote, Prof. Gyampo illustrated cultural differences in communication norms, citing an incident where a student openly criticized a professor in the US, contrasting it with the expected respect towards elders in African cultures.

Regarding Dr. Bawumia’s choice of running mate, Prof. Gyampo questioned whether Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s forthrightness in expressing views aligns with the complementary role sought by Dr. Bawumia, suggesting that while forthrightness can be advantageous, it must be tempered with cultural sensitivity.

“In the Ghanaian context,” Prof. Gyampo emphasized, “communicators must carefully consider how statements are perceived,” underscoring the potential implications of insensitive remarks in public discourse.

He claimed that the fact that there isn’t any hunger while the NPP is in power is evidence that God has blessed the nation.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) made these remarks during his introduction ceremony at Kumasi Jubilee Park as the running mate of NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized that the favorable weather that day was a divine blessing upon the NPP.

According to him, “while the whole world was experiencing hunger, Ghana had enough food. Let us give thanks to God almighty for what he has done for us”.

“Some people were upset with me during my recent visit to Kumasi,” he said in a post on X.

However, he has informed such critics that he does not regret his decision since his loyalty to the NPP remains his priority, even against his personal sentiments.

“I want to remind my supporters that loyalty to the party supersedes personal sentiments. As long as I remain in the NPP, I will actively participate in the party’s activities. If you want to be a leader, you must first be a servant of the people,” he added.

Some users on X are however not pleased with the recent comment made by Mr Agyapong.

Mr Agyapong, who represents Assin Central in Parliament, was greeted with a rousing welcome from enthusiastic party supporters upon his arrival at the Prempeh I International Airport.

A video captured on social media showcased the electric atmosphere as supporters, filled with excitement and admiration, mobbed Mr Agyapong and his wife as they made their way through the airport.

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has urged the leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop looking down on the grassroots.

The unsuccessful presidential aspirant in the party’s recent election noted that several leaders have offended the grassroots and should go back and apologize.

“I want to admonish the party leaders who have offended the party members and generated anger at our grassroots to go back and apologize to them.

“You have to respect them. I am not asking you to go and give them money but respecting them alone will change their minds. When you get the opportunity to be a leader, you have a responsibility to unite your people and lead them with respect.

“The Bible says if you want to be a leader, you must first be a servant of the people. Being elected to lead the party does not mean you will lord yourselves over the people.

“Some of the leaders were arrogant and disrespectful to you, but today they have come before you. We should learn from this and go house to house to apologize to those we have offended, and with unity, we will break the eight-year jinx.”

NAPO’s qualifications and strengths are beyond ‘dumsor’ timetable interview – Rodney Nkrumah

Rodney Nkrumah Boateng the Press Secretary to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has defended his boss’ reputation following criticism over his casual response to inquiries about the ‘Dumsor’ timetable.

NAPO faced severe backlash months ago for suggesting that those seeking a load-shedding schedule should create their own during peak power outages.

In an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Rodney Nkrumah Boateng argued that NAPO’s suitability as a potential running mate for Dr. Bawumia should not be judged solely on a single media interaction. He stressed that NAPO’s qualifications and capabilities go beyond that incident.

While acknowledging the inconvenience of power cuts, Nkrumah Boateng assured that measures are being implemented to resolve the ‘Dumsor’ issue and ensure stable electricity supply.

He highlighted that the current power challenges are less severe and frequent compared to those during the Mahama administration, underscoring progress in addressing the issue.

“Clearly, what pertained recently cannot by any stretch of the imagination be compared to what happened in 2014 or 2015 there about. But again. The important thing is, it is what it is, and what is being done about it and it is what the timelines are and how to ensure that power is brought back.

“Nobody enjoys power cuts, what happened happened, and those discussions have been had. And even before those discussions, people have said whatever they have to say.

“You cannot define him by just one single interview and one sentence that he said, that is blatantly pretty unfair…the important thing is that, well, fortunately now we are way past all that, and we’re looking forward to what lies ahead, and then we take it from there,” he maintained.

Nkrumah Boateng emphasized that evaluating NAPO based solely on one interview and a single statement is unfair, noting that discussions have moved beyond past criticisms. He expressed optimism about future prospects and moving forward positively.

Cape Coast South Member of Parliament for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, has staunchly defended Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, amidst criticisms of arrogance levelled against him.

Speaking on JoyNews’ flagship program, Newsfile, on Saturday, July 6th, 2024, Ricketts-Hagan refuted claims that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who currently serves as Vice President and is associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is arrogant.

Instead, he portrayed him as a “fantastic person” with assertiveness and intellectual prowess.

“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a fantastic person if you get to know him well. He is very assertive and can be bold at times, but that should not be considered an attribute of arrogance in the real sense of the word. He is very fantastic, if you ask me,” the MP emphasized during the panel discussion.

Ricketts-Hagan further highlighted Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s intellectual engagement, describing him as someone who thrives in intellectual debates. He argued that Dr. Prempeh’s assertiveness and strong views on various topics should not be misconstrued as arrogance.

Echoing similar sentiments, panel host Samson Lardi supported Ricketts-Hagan’s stance, stating, “Matthew Opoku Prempeh has strong views to express on topics tabled for discussion. He makes his points strongly and ensures he sends them across no matter what. That can’t be described as arrogance in any dictionary.”

Legal practitioner Kofi Bentil, another panelist on the show, criticized the perception of assertiveness as arrogance within Ghanaian society.

He argued that Dr. Prempeh’s track record in successfully implementing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy and managing affairs at the Energy Ministry speaks volumes about his capability rather than any perceived arrogance.

“The argument should be, can he do the job? Does he have a track record? I would say yes because the two critical ministries entrusted to him fared very well. He is results-oriented, and, to me, that’s more important,” Bentil affirmed.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially selected Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 general elections. This decision was unanimously endorsed by the National Executive Council (NEC) and subsequently ratified by the National Council following deliberations with the party’s National Steering Committee.

Especially during challenging times such as economic difficulties and power challenges under Nana Addo’s administration, proper communication becomes crucial.”

He suggested that a more measured and empathetic communication style would be more suitable for someone in NAPO’s position.

“When he is on the political platform, I think he presents himself differently, and I don’t think that is the demeanor we need from a gentleman aspiring to hold the office of vice president,” Cudjoe noted.

The party has extended a 50% rebate on filing fees to women and persons living with disabilities, reducing their non-refundable fee to GH₵17,500.

The statement also defines youth candidates as those aged between 18 and 40. The Elections Committee (EC) responsible for overseeing the electoral process includes seven key members: Chairperson Danquah Smith Butey, Vice Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, and Secretary Evans Nimako, among others.

The NPP has also established comprehensive rules and regulations to govern the conduct of the upcoming parliamentary primary election.

Distance yourself from Akufo-Addo if you want to win December polls – Dr. Arthur to Bawumia

Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a notable member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has advised the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to distance himself from President Akufo-Addo in order to secure victory in the upcoming December elections.

On July 4, the NPP’s National Council confirmed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, as the running mate for Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 general elections.

In an interview with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on GHOne TV, Dr. Kennedy, a medical doctor and former NPP Presidential candidate hopeful, expressed his belief that voters might reject Dr. Bawumia if he campaigns on continuing President Akufo-Addo’s legacy.

“He knows that the driver is heading in the wrong direction, so if the mate gets in the driver’s seat, he should change direction. If I were him, I wouldn’t want the President anywhere near my campaign.”

“If he wants to win, he will be. If he doesn’t want to win, then, of course, the President was his godfather who blessed him with this nomination, and the President will lead him to defeat,” he added.

“I will boldly tell the people of Ghana about the mistakes that have been made, failing to protect the public purse, not fighting galamsey, the myriad alphabet soup of corruption, judicial malfeasance, undermining the integrity of state agencies, and pledge that I will forge a new path.”

How can you change ‘angry’ Ghanaians’ perception of Napo in 6 months? – Political scientist asks NPP

The Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Professor Alidu Seidu, has voiced concerns regarding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ability to effectively promote its running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, to voters outside the party.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Upfront with Raymond Acquah, Prof. Seidu highlighted the challenges the NPP might face due to Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s perceived arrogance and recent controversial statements about the country’s power challenges.

Prof. Seidu pointed out that Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo, has been criticized for his perceived arrogance, an image further tarnished by his recent comments on the nation’s power issues, where he seemed dismissive of citizens’ calls for a load-shedding timetable during a period of frequent power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”

“We have just six months to elections. Yes, you can convince the NPP supporters that ‘this is not how Napo is. Few people have worked with Napo and they know that these are perceptions and that Napo is not like that.’ But we the people outside NPP or even people within the party who haven’t fraternised with him, how long will it take them to change their perception?” Prof. Seidu questioned.

He added that many Ghanaians are still upset about the recent power outages, which have severely impacted their work, businesses, and personal lives.

This resentment could hinder efforts to reshape Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s public image in the limited time before the elections.

In response to these concerns, the National Organiser of the NPP and a close associate of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, Henry Nana Boakye, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to counter the negative perceptions.

He emphasized Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s dedication and capability, noting that the party is prepared to roll out a strategy to address the issues raised.

“I have worked closely with him, so for me, I see a lot of confidence in him. I see somebody who is committed and dedicated to his work, I see that he has the energy to always turn things around. As a political party, the ticket must be sold to Ghanaians and that is what we are going to do,” Nana Boakye stated.

NPP doesn’t believe Bawumia, Napo on their own strengths can win them power – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he perceives as a lack of confidence in their own candidates.

During an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana with host Randy Abbey, Sam George asserted that the NPP’s desperation to win power is evident in its strategies.

“My brother, Ablakwa, has been going on and on about state capture. You know the NPP is so desperate to win power. They don’t believe that Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Napo on their own strengths can win them power. They don’t believe it. They don’t believe it that the two of them together have what it takes to win NPP the elections. So they need to capture every aspect of the state. Even the media, you are at risk,” Sam George stated.

Sam George believes the NPP is resorting to extraordinary measures to secure an electoral victory because they do not have faith in the capabilities of their presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), respectively.

On the other hand, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), who was recently confirmed as the running mate for the NPP by the party’s National Council on July 4, 2024, has expressed his full commitment to supporting Dr. Bawumia.

In his acceptance speech, NAPO, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, pledged to lead a robust campaign to ensure an NPP victory and break the 8-year governance cycle.

“As I assume the role of running mate alongside my esteemed boss, H.E. Dr. Bawumia, I am committed to supporting him to prosecute a formidable 2024 campaign to break the 8-year election cycle and serve our beloved country diligently. Let us work together towards a brighter future for Ghana,” NAPO said.

The race to succeed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South has commenced, following his confirmation as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 presidential election.

On Thursday, July 4, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially endorsed Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as ‘NAPO,’ as the running mate.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his enthusiasm for the ticket, describing Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh as an “excellent pairing.”

Following NAPO’s confirmation, posters of Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, the Manhyia South Constituency Treasurer who doubles as Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s biological brother, have surfaced, signaling his interest in running for the seat.

According to reports, other potential candidates are also meeting with delegates privately.

  • You mistake NAPO’s boldness as arrogance, but it is Mahama who is – Miracles Aboagye

You mistake NAPO’s boldness as arrogance, but it is Mahama who is – Miracles Aboagye

Communications director for the campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has refuted claims that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), Dr. Bawumia’s chosen running mate, is arrogant.

He asserted that these accusations come from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have previously made similar false allegations against NPP presidential candidates such as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Miracles Aboagye emphasized that anyone who has worked closely with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, knows that he is confident, not arrogant.

“These allegations wouldn’t work; we have advanced. People used to believe these things in the past. If you can recall, in the past, there were similar allegations against Kufuor and Nana Addo. People said Kufuor and Nana Addo were womanisers.

For Kufuor, people said he had relations with a white woman which resulted in the birth of twins, Paul and Peter. Later, we went to look into these things, and it was not true.

“Anybody who tells you that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is arrogant is an NDC member; he or she just wants to spoil his name. Almost every other Ghanaian who is not partisan and has worked with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh would bear witness that he is a team player, a goal-getter, results-oriented,” he said in Twi.

He highlighted NAPO’s successful tenure as Minister of Education as evidence that he is not
    arrogant.

“Can someone who is arrogant work at the Ministry of Education for four years without any labour unrest? Do you know that it takes love, humility, patience, and respect to deal with labour unions? Boldness and assertiveness are not the same as arrogance. Confidence is not the same as arrogance.”

Dennis Miracles Aboagye further suggested that former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, is the one who could be described as arrogant, citing past comments he has made.

He concluded by stating that boldness and assertiveness should not be confused with arrogance, and that confidence should not be mistaken for arrogance.

He strongly beliefs in the duo will increase NPP’s chances of winning the 2024 elections.

There had been widespread speculation that President Akufo-Addo opposed NAPO’s selection as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections.

Reports suggested that President Akufo-Addo had reluctantly endorsed Bawumia’s choice during a meeting where he voiced his reservations about the decision.

However, in his first public comments on the matter, a visibly pleased President Akufo-Addo stated that he believes Bawumia and NAPO will give the NPP the best chance of retaining power.

He expressed his excitement and confidence that on January 7, 2025, he would be handing over to Bawumia, not Mahama.

“The National Council has just endorsed the nomination of Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. The NPP has an excellent ticket, and we are going to win with this ticket. The feeling is good, and they make a very good pair,” he said.

During a panel discussion on June 28, 2024, the Warrior-Prophet confidently stated that Dr. Bawumia, Ghana’s current Vice President, alongside his potential running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), will secure victory.

He detailed their anticipated inauguration attire, asserting that Dr. Bawumia will wear a specific outfit and Dr. Prempeh will don traditional Kente cloth on January 7, 2025.

“Everybody is aware that I predicted NPP’s running mate. Has it happened or not?” the Warrior-Prophet questioned during the discussion.

“Which prophet was able to predict Mahama’s running mate? If you know Mahama will win, why didn’t you come out to tell us whom he would swear in with?” he questioned.

He continued, “But for me, I can tell you the kind of attire that Bawumia will wear on the 7th of January, and the kind of Kente that Napo will put on. I can describe everything.”

Prophet Paul Kusi Appiah also threw down a challenge to those forecasting victory for opposition candidate John Mahama.
