  • ‘Local politics was not part of my plans’ – Elvis Ankrah’s big breakthrough into politics

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah had just finished reading a Master’s degree course in International Relations and was hoping that he would receive a callback from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to start his dream job with them.

And as is the case for most young graduates, the urge to experience working in any environment that presented him with much more made his hopes even greater.

But Elvis Ankrah said something that jolted his dream sideways and put that long-time dream on permanent hold.

And it all started when he was approached by one of the stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ato Ahwoi, to take up an unusual job: a spokesperson for a presidential candidate.

The job was for him to deputise as a spokesperson for the late former president of Ghana, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, who was by then campaigning to become Head of State.

He explained to GhanaWeb TV’s Edward Smith Anamale that when that call came through, it was not one of the things on his mind.

“I went to do my Masters in International Relations and when I came back, I was on the verge of… I’d actually gone to ECOWAS to put in an application for a job and I was expecting a response because I had spoken with Dr. Chambas and all that, and then Mr Ato Ahwoi called me and said he wanted me to be the deputy campaign spokesperson for Prof Mills’ presidential primaries.

“It was a very difficult decision to make: go to ECOWAS, go and earn some good dollars because I studied international relations so that had been my interest; to work with an international agency: ECOWAS, AU or the United Nations, so local politics was not part of my plan,” he explained.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, however, explained in the election Desk interview on GhanaWeb TV that after a while, he agreed to take on that job, also because of something profound that Ato Ahwoi said to him.

“And he said, go and do this thing for us, and after several months, I eventually agreed because he told me something: ‘If you go to your ECOWAS or UN and after 15 years you come back to Ghana, don’t you know you’ll be a stranger, and your colleagues would have gone ahead of you? So, what will happen to all the experience you gathered as SRC president and NUGS.

“So, that really got me thinking so I took up the challenge and so, myself, Ludwig and Rojo, we went round with Prof Mills around the whole Ghana. We went to almost every city, town, village – every nook and cranny. It was a very eye-opening experience and that is where I gathered a lot of data and network with the grassroots,” he explained.

  • I have about 12000 contacts; on 400 WhatsApp groups – Afriyie Ankrah touts his commitment to NDC grassroots

An aspirant for the position of General Secretary of the largest opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has given a mental picture of how well-connected he is to the party grassroots.

According to him, his relationship with the ordinary members of the party is such that he constantly keeps in touch with them, a situation that has led to the fact that he currently has over 12,000 contacts on his mobile phone.

He explained 80% of that number are members of the NDC, while he is on about 400 WhatsApp groups.

“… so my phone now, I have about 12,000 contacts on my phone; 80% of them are party people.

“And these are not just people I just know; I know them personally. And, I’m on about 400 platforms and I keep changing my phones almost every six months because the phone gets tired,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on GhanaWeb TV’s Election Desk with Edward Smith Anamale, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, who is also a former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, recalled how he got into politics.

Describing it as something he didn’t plan, as he had other plans for entering the international world of work, he said his decision changed after he had an interaction with Ato Ahwoi, one of the stalwarts of the NDC party.

“Mr. Ato Ahwoi called me and said he wanted me to be the deputy campaign spokesperson for Prof. Mills’ presidential primaries. It was a very difficult decision to make: go to ECOWAS, go and earn some good dollars because I studied international relations so that had been my interest; to work with an international agency: ECOWAS, AU or the United Nations, so local politics was not part of my plan.

“And he said, go and do this thing for us, and after several months, I eventually agreed because he told me something: ‘If you go to your ECOWAS or UN and after 15 years you come back to Ghana, don’t you know you’ll be a stranger, and your colleagues would have gone ahead of you? So, what will happen to all the experience you gathered as SRC president and NUGS?

“So, that really got me thinking so I took up the challenge and so, myself, Ludwig and Rojo, we went round with Prof Mills around the whole Ghana. We went to almost every city, town, and village – every nook and cranny. It was a very eye-opening experience, and that is where I gathered a lot of data and networked with the grassroots,” he explained.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a former Director of Elections for the NDC, hopes to fill in the soon-to-be-vacant shoes of the current General Secretary, Asiedu Nketiah.

  • #SackOforiAtta: NPP MPs boycott vote of censure against Ofori-Atta

Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have called for the resignation of Finance Minister have refused to join their minority colleagues in a vote of censure in this regard.

This announcement was made during a press conference in parliament on Thursday, November 11, 2022.

They insist that, while they will continue to call for the resignation of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, they will do so solely on their terms.

Addressing the media on November 11, 2022, the NPP MPs said their decision to refrain from supporting their colleagues on the other side of parliament is based on the premise of their calls for the sack of Mr. Ofori-Atta which they say is based on falsehood and propaganda.

“We are here to reiterate that, however much you heard us speaking that based on the intervention of the president, we will have to see the minister of finance do his work, read budget, see through appropriation and then the president will act.

“Over the days, we have heard the finance minister speaking and his speaking has influenced majority of us in the caucus, not only to state that we are back to the original position that we took, and that position is that the minister of finance must not be the one to read the budget, and must not be the one that would do the appropriation.

“We are here to tell you this morning that this will be very soon for you to see, the position of us and we are going to be positively defiant about that posture until that action is taken. However, we are not going to support the cause of the NDC in the chamber this morning.

“The cause of the NDC is premised on falsehood, propaganda and reasons that are not justifiable. Their position might look like ours but is not the same.”

This comes following a decision by some 80 MPs to call for the sacking of the Finance Minister.

The group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament petitioned president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during a presser on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, to sack the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State at the finance ministry, Adu Boahen, to restore public confidence in the economy.”

The group said it will not do business with government nor support the 2023 Budget if the president fails to heed their calls.

According to them, the move follows previous concerns sent to the government that have not yielded any positive results.

Akufo-Addo’s meeting with NPP MPs and Vote of censure:

A meeting with the president following the demands by the NPP MPs meant that they had to stand down their request on two conditions.

The conditions included that Ofori-Atta is allowed to conclude the current phase of financial support negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and also to present the 2023 budget and see to the passage of the appropriation bill before their removal request will be acted upon.

It was on the same day that the Minority Caucus filed a censure. Their leader, Haruna Iddrisu assured the House days ago that the Minority Caucus he leads in Parliament will fully pursue a censure vote initiated against Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on the floor of the House on Tuesday, November 1, 2022; Haruna reiterated having issued a nine-line whip for members of his caucus when the day of voting comes, affirming that he will move the motion before November 10.

Haruna Iddrisu, after confirming that the motion will be filed also called on MPs in the Majority to join them to remove Ofori-Atta.

“I will move the motion for the censure of the Minister for Finance, Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta. Those like-minded persons who will dance with us, Mr. Speaker, they will be welcomed in the secret ballots,” Haruna stressed.

    Voting today:

Parliament will require a vote with 2/3rd of MPs to decide the fate of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

With the current stance of the group from the Majority Caucus, it remains unclear what the outcome of this vote of censure will be.

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has officially announced his intention to contest in the flagbearship race of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at a media interaction in Accra on Thursday, November 3, 2022, Dr. Duffuor said he would file his candidature as soon as the party opens nominations.

He intimated that he is contesting for the position because he is confident that he is the leader the country needs at this moment.

“Announcement: to contest for the flagbereship of the NDC anytime the party opens nominations. I offer myself once again to service my country with sacrifice when I’m given the chance to do so

    .

  • Akufo-Addo should be commissioning projects not cutting sod – Evans Amoo

An aspiring Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Evans Amoo, has called out President Akufo-Addo for being unable to churn out several developmental projects.

According to Mr Amoo, rather than commissioning projects, the President is engaged in cutting sod for the construction of some projects he seeks to over see while in office.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on October 27, the NDC member questioned why the President was on a tour in the Eastern Region.

“What at all is he commissioning at the Eastern Region. When did he cut sod. He should be commissioning and  not cutting sod in an election period,” he said in the local parlance.

During his tour of the Eastern Region, President Akufo-Addo inspected the construction of the Ofoase-Ayirebi Agenda 111 Hospital Project.

He also commissioning of a 1D1F Beverage Factory, a 24-Unit Classroom Block at St. Martins SHS, as well as an accommodation complex inside the Nsawam Camp Prison all in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency.

Again, he commissioned the Model STEM Senior High School and the Abomosu bridge in Atiwa West.

According to Mr Amoo, “he (Akufo-Addo has) made things so difficult in this country. There is extreme poverty.”

He bemoaned the incessant rise in prices of fuel products. A litre of petrol is being sold at about GHS14 while a litre of diesel goes for over GHS18.

  • Why these songs by Sarkodie are perfect tunes for Ghana’s current economic situation

Rapper Sarkodie is undoubtedly one of Ghana’s most popular musicians known globally for his talent. Back home, he is celebrated for winning awards and also being vocal about matters that affect citizens.

Unhappy about Ghana’s economic situation, Sarkodie went after the country’s leadership some eight years ago under John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He called out the president for mismanaging the economy which was characterized by power outages popularly known as ‘Dumsor’, hikes in fuel prices, and the cedi’s poor performance against the American dollar.

Sarkodie released two songs in the space of one year to ‘attack’ the then-government which was run by John Mahama. He spelt out all the wrongs under his leadership and called him to action.

Fast forward to 2022, Ghana is now facing a much more difficult situation that has witnessed citizens calling for the heads of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and other ministers who have woefully failed in their various positions.

GhanaWeb throws back to two of Sarkodie’s hit songs that best describe Ghana’s current economic crises under Akufo-Addo.

    1. Inflation

Released in 2014, ‘Inflation’ was Sarkodie’s first punch at the NDC’s government and the then-president, John Mahama. The lyrics in the songs are more than ever relatable.

The introduction of ‘Inflation’ goes like this: “The nation is full of surprises. Besi nne we still leave in crisis. Kantamanto kokohwe nneeama prices. ECGfoo nso play omo tactise. Ene na dumso, okyena na pipe. Towo nnooma so na yebe dum no five. Filli wo gallon na save wo life.”

Parts of the lyrics touched on the cedi’s performance against the dollar and the fuel price hikes.

    2. The Masses (Inflation Part 2)

Just a year after Sarkodie released Inflation, he came out with ‘The Masses’ to hammer on the need for the government to address the plight of Ghanaians.

The song equally got all the hype despite claims that it was a deliberate attempt to make the government unpopular.

Sarkodie poured out his frustration on the song that was sung in the Twi language.

Meanwhile, Sarkodie in a couple of tweets has urged President Akufo-Addo to fix the country following distress calls from all four corners of the country as a result of the economic crises.

He noted that the NDC in Nudowukorpe would not only make financial donations to support his campaign but would also participate fully in activities that would secure him a second term as the Volta Regional Secretary of the party.

Mr Gunu, also a native from Nudowukorpe, and a former District Chief Executive for the area, was accorded a warm reception by the village folks who turned up in their numbers to welcome a man they revere and hold in high esteem for his contributions to the development of the community and the party at large.

  • Otokunor officially announces bid to contest NDC General Secretary position

Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor has officially announced his bid to lead the party as its new General Secretary, taking over from Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah who has served in that capacity for 17 years.

In a live broadcast on his social media platforms, Mr. Otokunor pledged his resolve to work towards ensuring the party returns to governance and take over from an administration that has “plummeted the country’s economic fortunes and left millions in despair”.

According to him, he has had the privilege of learning from the best in the party and from his boss and mentor, Asiedu Nketiah hence, placing him well enough to take over as General Secretary of the NDC.

“In recent times, our party has gone through one of its most difficult phases, since 1992. We have been through 2 major elections in an environment, that can be best described as hostile, unfair and undemocratic, yet in the face of these challenges we have demonstrated resilience, determination and  have come together to work for our collective progress.”

“This happens at a time when the Akufo-Addo, Bawumia government have plummeted the country’s fortunes and left millions of Ghanaians in economic despair… I, all these times, as I served as Deputy General Secretary, have never lost touch with you. I have learned from the best and the party”.

Dr. Otokunor who served as the founding registrar of the NDC’s Ghana Institute of Social Democracy reiterated the resolve of himself and the NDC to work towards putting Ghana on the path of progress and prosperity.

“I know how important for you, the Ghanaian public, that the NDC forms a government in 2025, to deliver this country from the clueless, tyrannical NPP and put Ghana back on the path of progress and prosperity,” he added.

The opposition National Democratic Congress is expected to hold its regional conference in October 2022 to elect its regional executive members, while that of national executive members will be held in November 2022.

“This marks the birth of a new dawn in my long-time ambition of serving the welfare and interest of my fellow constituents at a higher level. As a party member, I have faithfully served my party to the best of my individual ability and learned a lot of valuable lessons which I carry along into mainstream politics,” he said. “It’s my determination, most of all, to help promote monetary discipline and policies that will promote the general welfare of my fellow Tema East constituents,” he added.

The NDC will hold its Constituency elections on October 22, 2022.

This follows a successful branch election of party executives across all branches of the party some weeks ago.

The party subsequently opened nominations for the Constituency elections on September 20, 2022, and closed the process on September 24, 2022.

A member of Amoako-Brobbey’s team, Jonathan Darah Mandela, branch Secretary, also urged all NDC members in Tema East to take conscious notice of Mr Amoako-Brobbey’s industriousness as a private businessman, his generosity as a renowned philanthropist, especially to party members, and his commitment in keeping faith with the NDC both at the national level and at the Constituency level over the years.

  • Opinion: NDC members’ highest level of insanity: Their thirst for power

It is often said that the highest level of insanity is to keep on repeating a particular thing while expecting different results but in the case of the high-ranking members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), their thirst for political power is rather the case.

Without being abusive, it is accurate to observe that a considerable number of the members of the NDC have allowed their piggish thirst for power to influence them to either act or talk in a lunatic manner, a situation that is becoming deplorable.

This insanity is expressed in several forms. Well, I don’t think it is sane for a social democratic party to oppose a policy like free Senior High School as the members of the NDC did when it was first introduced in 2017.

For lack of a better word, it is simply lunatic for a political party that is grounded on the social democratic philosophy to oppose a policy that seeks to give the poor free access to secondary education. Nonetheless, that is exactly what all the high-ranking members of the NDC did.

The power-thirsty inspired lunacy of the NDC is also expressed in how their 2020 Presidential candidate, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has been contradicting himself on the causes of the country’s economic crises.

What other than a craving for power would have caused Mr Mahama to vehemently oppose the position that Ghana’s economic woes are caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war but propagate the same message on the international scene? This self-contradiction cannot be described as sane behavior.

It is equally not normal behavior to suggest to the government to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), arguing that they have the solution to the country’s problems and turn around to say the Fund has wrongly diagnosed the problem. That is exactly what former President John Dramani Mahama did.

The highest peak of this insanity is the attack on all leaders of state institutions that disagree with the position of the NDC on important national issues. Judges are being insulted. Selected Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) are getting their share of the NDC’s attacks.

The worst happened recently when Mr Mahama attacked the competence and integrity of the Managing director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, just because she did not side with his partisan position on the country’s economic crises.

This insanity also finds expression in their recent press conference against the EC. The NDC thinks the Electoral Management Body cannot instruct the National Identification Authority (NIA) to do its work, but they are right to hold a press conference to tell the EC what to do.

I don’t know what other than insanity would have caused these power-thirsty fellows to carry themselves in this manner.

So much lunacy was also displayed in this press conference as the largest opposition party told the public that they had boycotted the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings, the only mutually beneficial forum they can advance their grievances though they have a lot to complain about.

Since everybody in the party is misconducting themselves, their most acerbic sharp teethed baby, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, sat in the studious of a national television station like the TV3 to literarily insult the symbolic figure of the land, President Akufo-Addo.

As shameless as they are, no elder in the party has condemned this lunatic act. Power is indeed sweet, but it is unacceptable to act lunatically in one’s quest for it because no right-thinking citizen would want to entrust power to the hands of such people.

  • Atta Mills tomb hasnt been desecrated Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has debunked claims that the tomb of former President John Evans Atta Mills has been desecrated.

According to him, such claims are false. He, thus, entreated the general public to disregard any claim to that effect.

This comes after the family alleged that the government has allowed the Atta Mills Institute to tamper with the grave of the former President without informing them.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Rehabilitated Asomdwee Park and the 10th Anniversary of the death of President Atta Mills, President Akufo-Addo said the public should reject such claims.

He stressed that the legacy of the former president will not be forgotten.

“There have been unfortunate accusations leveled by some persons against Government about the supposed desecration of the tomb of the late President in the process of rehabilitating the Park.”

“Nothing could be further from the truth, and it is good to note that these false, malicious statements have been firmly dispelled and debunked by the Coastal Development Authority, through the agency of its CEO, Mr. Jerry Ahmed Schaib, in a public statement under his hand,” he added.

Applauding the president for his contribution to building the Asomdwoe Park, the Chief Executive of the Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, said he will ensure the “regular maintenance of the park.”

Professor John Evans Atta Mills previously served as Vice-President from 1997 to 2001 under President Jerry Rawlings, and he stood unsuccessfully in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections as the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He is the first sitting Ghanaian head of state to die in office and was subsequently laid to rest at the Asomdwoe Park.

According to him, elections in that zone would be held between July 31 and August 4, 2022.

On Zone Three, he said the exhibition of the register would take place on July 28 and 29 while filing of nominations would take place on July 30 and 31, with vetting taking place on August 1 and 2, 2022 while grievances would be held on August 3.

Mr Otokunor said elections in that zone would take place between August 4 and 9, 2022.

He, therefore, urged all registered members of the party to take interest in the exhibition exercises to ensure that their names were captured so that they were not disenfranchised.

    Ashanti, Eastern

As to why the Ashanti and Eastern regions were not captured in the three zones, he explained that those two regions were being treated specially for strategic regions.

Mr Otokunor said those two regions would form the last phase of the exercises with the exhibition of their registers taking place on August 21 and August 22, while filing of nominations would take place between August 23 and August 24.

He said the vetting of aspirants would place between August 25 and August 26 and the Appeals Committee would look into any grievances on August 27, 2022.

He said elections in those two regions would then take place between August 28 and September 3.

He explained that the process had been staggered to ensure every registered member took part in the process.

  • “Were in massive hole and dont need further digging” Mahama on $1 billion syndicated loan

Former President, John Dramani Mahama says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs will not support the approval of any new loans that do not have specific terms or purposes.

This comes on the back of the $1 billion syndicated loan presented to Parliament.

Delivering a speech at a closing ceremony of a retreat for Minority Group MPs at the Volta Serene hotel in Ho on Sunday, July 17, 2022, the former President said Ghana is in an economic hole, and it will not be prudent to continue digging with more loans.

”We do not believe that the existence of crisis permits even more reckless decision-making. All decisions and policy choices made at this critical juncture could offer relief or exacerbate our problems and make recovery extremely difficult. We are in a massive hole and, and we do not need further digging.”

The 2022 budget noted an international financing programme to raise at least $750 million, with an option to increase it by a further $750 million for budget support and liability management.

Although the budget captured $750 million, a $1 billion loan agreement is currently before the House.

At a Finance Committee meeting on Thursday, the Minority stalled the approval processes owing to what they call the discrepancies between the loan presented to the house and what has been presented to the committee for consideration.

A Ranking Member on the Committee, Cassiel Ato Forson said “the budget is saying that, in the course of the year, they will be taking a term loan of $750 million. Why do you ask us to approve $1 billion?”

Reacting to the development, Mr. John Mahama insisted that until the terms of the $250 million loan component are renegotiated to make them “favourable” and same captured in subsequent budgets, the Minority MPs will not support its approval.

“Our position on the $250 million component remains unchanged, as such unfavourable terms as the $40 million insurance payment and total interest of over $80 million make it too expensive and inimical to the economic interest of Ghana. It is also not programmed in the 2022 budget statement.”

On the $750 million component, Mr. Mahama noted that after he raised concerns, some effort has gone into renegotiating the costs and terms, which now appear more favourable.

He is however unclear on the exact purpose of the loan.

Mr. Mahama said the NDC will only support its approval if ”evidence of its use for specific growth-related projects leading to improvements in the lives of people is presented.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has slated November 2022 to elect its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

Per the provisional timetable sighted by The Independent Ghana, the internal election will commence with the branch executive elections scheduled to take place on June 15 and end in July.

The constituency elections will be followed by the regional executive elections in October 2022 and the election of the national executive officers in November 2022.

Among other aspiring presidential candidates, one name that has popped up is the former President, John Dramani Mahama who seeks to return and lead the opposition party battle for the Presidential seat come 2024.

But, a recent report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has predicted challenges if Mr. Mahama is elected to pick the mantle to lead his people into the Jubilee House.

EIU noted that the NDC would win the 2024 polls if it elects a fresh candidate.

  • Duffuor intensifies campaign with launch of ‘NDC ahotor project’ for grassroots

A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Dr Kwabena Duffuor is set to launch an NDC grassroots empowerment and a self-financing project dubbed the “NDC ahotor project” for the grassroots.

“Ahotor” means “relief” in the Akan language.

In a statement, the project manager stated that the former governor of the Bank of Ghana and former finance minister in the erstwhile NDC government of Professor Evans Atta Mills, and a business magnate makes it clear that the main aim of the Project is “geared towards setting up micro-businesses in all the 275 constituencies in order to create the much needed, but currently unavailable local funding for the day-to-day running of the NDC party at the grassroots level”.

This Initiative is a direct response to the recommendations of a business feasibility studies commissioned by Duffuor and carried out by a team in Ghana. It was to establish the most feasible and sustainable business idea capable of helping to finance the NDC party activities at the local level.

He bemoans the present situation where the responsibility of raising resources for grassroots activities of the NDC is either left in the hands of branch and constituency executives whose work for the party is purely voluntary affecting their personal businesses and families or in the hands of sitting MPs who are also overwhelmed by financial demands of their constituents, is not a sustainable way for financing a modern-day political organisation.

    Aim of project

This project which is yet to be implemented is meant to lessen the burden on MPs, relieve local executives of the huge financial difficulties they face in running the party. It is believed that the NDC AhotÉ” Project will create a medium for the local party machinery to be financially self-sustaining through regular income streams to help support their ongoing initiatives. It is also to empower and reposition the NDC and make it battle-ready for election 2024 and beyond.

According to the project manager, the NDC AhotÉ” Project will be micro-businesses focusing on social events such as funerals, naming ceremonies, marriage ceremonies, durbars, political campaigns, and rallies which are mostly outdoor activities.

The nature of these activities places a high demand on the use of plastic chairs, canopies, public address systems, power generators, podiums, mobile toilets etc. A local rental business of the accessories owned and run by the party at various constituency levels, will create employment opportunities and generate income which will bring relief (AhotÉ”) to the grassroots.

Duffuor is, therefore, sponsoring and financing all the 275 constituencies with all the equipment and accessories necessary to set up a rental business.

The pilot phase of the NDC AhotoÉ” project is set to be launched at the Ashaiman constituency in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday 7 April.

  • NDC, NPP must come up with a national development plan for Ghana Prof Agyeman-Duah

Former UN Senior Governance Advisor, Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has urged the two leading parties in Ghana, the NDC and NPP, to work together to come up with a national development plan for the country.

According to him, having a national document to guide the governance of Ghana will help speed up the development of the country, irrespective of which party is in power.

“I wish our two dominant parties can meet and somewhere merge their vision into one complete national vision, so whoever comes to power will be obliged to meet that vision.

“Whether we like it or not, NDC and NPP are the dominant parties, forget about the others, if they can agree on certain fundamentals, it will be one of the biggest victories,” asaaseradio.com quotes Agyeman-Duah.

The former UN senior governance advisor said Ghana must take advantage of our democracy to propel the country’s development to improve the livelihood of citizens.

“The first lesson has been learnt already and enshrined in our constitution, which is the avoidance of dictatorship. But on the development side, which is a critical side, what we can learn from Nkrumah, was his vision of long planning and sticking to it, that vision,” he added.

Ghana has a National Development Planning Commission whose duty is to advise the president on economic development and develop long-term national development plans for the country.

However, the commission’s role has been side-lined by successive governments who implement their campaign promises without thinking of its long-term effect on the country.

  • NDCs Kwesi Dawood reports himself to police for investigation over incest allegations

The Cape Coast police are interrogating Kwesi Dawood, the recently suspended Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, over the allegations of incest levelled against him by his teenage daughter.

According to a Daily Guide report, Dawood reported himself to the police in the company of two lawyers, and three other persons, where he underwent a long interrogation.

It continued that the victim and her mother, Mavis Ayite, were also said to have been at the police station upon an invitation, and also as part of the investigating process into the case.

Earlier, GhanaWeb reported on how Kwesi Dawood had allegedly been sleeping with his daughter since 2019 when she was only 15-years-old and going on to impregnate her.

Following that, it was reported that the NDC executive forced her to have an abortion, from which she is said to have bled for about a week thereafter.

“He then allegedly got his friend to administer an injection to terminate the pregnancy last year, and according to the victim, she bled for more than two weeks.

“It has been haunting me. He made me go for an abortion. He started having sex with me in 2019. The last time he had sex with me was in June 2021. He was NADMO Coordinator and is the current NDC Regional Communications Officer. He did not look after me,” Daily Guide had earlier reported of the girl saying.

The paper also reported that the girl claimed that her father had beaten her up when he found out that she had reported the incestuous act to her mother, following which the case was reported to the Swedru police.

“My mother was not happy for me to leave and go and stay with him. He promised to send me abroad to further my education and warned that if I reveal the act to anybody, he was going to end the plans to send me out for my education,” she is reported to have added.

Later, a communication from the NDC stated that the party had suspended the suspect, pending investigations before its Disciplinary Committee.

Kwesi Dawood on his part had vehemently denied any such claims, blaming it as being a scheme being pushed by people within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He also said that the girl (the victim) in question is not his daughter but only a TESCON member at the University of Education, Winneba.

  • WeII not impose Mahama on delegates – NDC

Theophilus Tetteh Chai, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rubbished claims that the umbrella family is trying to impose former President John Dramani Mahama on party members.

He however adds that if it is the wish of the party supporters to file Mr. Mahama then the party would have no option other than to file him as a candidate.

He was speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5fm.

He said if people want to contest in the presidential primaries they would not be prevented but if it is the wish of delegates to vote for Mahama, so be it.

He said these people may consider his performance and there is nothing people can do anything about it.

The former legislator indicated that over 6 million Ghanaians voted for Mahama in 2020 hence those claiming that he is a lame horse are only expressing their views.

He noted the party has taken stock of what happened in 2016 and 2020 and going forward, they will work towards victory for 2024.

  • We used world’s best, most robust technology for 2020 election – NDC Collation team replies critics

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has finally responded to claims that the party did not have a collation system during the 2020 election hence their inability to produce figures when the party was asked to.

According to the party, it developed one of the best collation systems in the country with some of the finest brains in the Tech industry for the 2020 election and this took two years to develop ahead of the polls.

“The collation system as deployed for the 2020 elections is one of the most robust and cognitive systems ever built for any collation exercise in Ghana. This system was underpinned by 11 micro services from application monitoring, results matching & inconsistency flagging to cognition. It is also very imperative to note that, not only were the results collated timely but also able to predict how many parliamentary seats the party had won,” a statement from the Secretary to the Collation Team said.

The statement further said, “Due to the parallel computing and transmission channels deployed, any disengagement of one channel could not in any way have hampered the efforts of the exercise. To even suggest that the system was an “Excel System” goes to even show that the proponents of this absurd agenda have little or no information on the length and breadth of the system deployed. The brain work from planning, analysis and design to engineering from some of the finest brains in the industry was impeccable. This exercise spanned a period of two years. It is very abysmal for anyone, and even more hurtful for a high ranking member of the party to insinuate that such efforts were put in yielded negative results”.

The collation team thereby debunked any assertion that the NDC did not collate its electoral figures.

“It is hereby stated without an iota of equivocation that this statement is nothing but palpable falsehood and that the auditing exercise was done with the exhibition of the strictest forms of professionalism.”

NDC UNDERTOOK AN EFFICIENT SYSTEM OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN COLLATING RESULTS OF THE 2020 GENERAL ELECTIONS

Professionals in IT restrain themselves from engaging in ill technology perceptions due to the solid training received in information security and management. But it is sometimes very prudent to set the records straight.

This system was underpinned by 11 micro services from application monitoring, results matching & inconsistency flagging to cognition. The brain work from planning, analysis and design to engineering from some of the finest brains in the industry was impeccable. This exercise spanned a period of two years. It is very abysmal for anyone, and even more hurtful for a high ranking member of the party to insinuate that such efforts were put in yielded negative results.

Results were being communicated to our representatives at the strong room from the wee hours of 8th December,2020. It is even more regrettable to note that pink sheets meant to be audited were lost in the process.

It is hereby stated without an iota of equivocation that this statement is nothing but palpable falsehood and that the auditing exercise was done with the exhibition of the strictest forms of professionalism.

We know the pains that accompany the loss of an election. We must be very guided in these times. The focus presently should be firm on how to stay united as a party for the tasks ahead.

  • Organise dont agonise Dr Omane Boamah consoles heartbroken NDC supporters

Stalwart of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) and former Minister of Communications Dr Edward Omane Boamah has enjoined supporters of the NDC to take advantage of recent happenings to organise and not agonise over their losses.

His advice follows the dismissal of the election petition of former President John Mahama by the Supreme Court on the basis that the petitioner failed to prove his case in Court.

Earlier, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi had accused the leadership of the NDC caucus in Parliament of betrayal following the approval of some Ministers-Designate after voting in Parliament.

In the ongoing turmoil, Dr. Omane Boamah has advised that rather than lament over these occurrences, the supporters of the Party ought to organise for the future.

Meanwhile, John Mahama, whose petition seeking a rerun of the 2020 Presidential Election has been dismissed has indicated that he disagrees with the ruling by the Apex Court of the land.

I disagree with the suggestion of our Justices that an election petition is akin to any other civil litigation and therefore an EC Chairperson, whose functions go to the heart of our democracy, can by a legal sleight of hand avoid accounting for her stewardship in an appropriate forum such as the highest court of the land.

  • NDC summons Atubiga over Eugene Arhin comment

The opposition National Democratic Congress has summoned its member Stephen Atubiga over comments he made over the alleged properties owned by presidential spokesperson Eugene Arhin.

Mr Atubiga is said to have defended the alleged wealth gathered by the presidential staffer over the last four years.

The party in a letter summoning him said his comments were inconsistent with its values.

“I write in respect of a news item captioned “Only Useless Politicians Retire Poor”, published on Ghanaweb on Saturday the 13th of February, 2021, which was attributed to you. The report indicated that you have allegedly chided Ghanaians criticizing Eugene Arhin of the NPP for amassing wealth in the space of four years. Excerpts from the statements you are alleged to have made include:

” “It is wise that as an individual working, there is the need to amass wealth so you can give back to your parents and society for contributions made to your upbringing” 2. “It is only a politician who led a wayward life who will retire poor”, the summons letter said.

It added: “FEC finds the above statements unfortunate, especially when they are not consistent with the very principles on which the NDC is founded. Consequently, you are invited to meet FEC on Wednesday the 24th of February, 2021 at the Party Head Office, Adabralca at 2:30pm, to explain to FEC why disciplinary actions should not be taken against you”.

  • Set up independent body to investigate Techiman South shooting incident NDC

The Bono East Regional office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to set up an independent body to investigate the shooting incident that occurred during the 2020 general election in the Techiman South Constituency.

In a petition signed by Mr Ali Mohammed Shamsudeen, the NDC Bono East Regional Secretary and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Techiman on Thursday, said the party asked that the investigations into the post-election violence be conducted swiftly, and perpetrators made to face the full rigours of the law.

The post-election violence which happened at the Techiman Bonokyempem Hall on December 7, was characterised by sporadic gunshots, leaving two dead while five others sustained gunshot wounds.

The shooting started during the collation of the election results, when supporters of the NDC attempted to forcibly break into the hall, which forced the police to fire gunshots to disperse the crowd.

The Party said it had already sent a copy of the petition to the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council in Techiman to be forwarded to President Akufo-Addo.

“We cannot trust the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) because they have clearly shown that they cannot be neutral and transparent in this matter. Since perpetrators of this monstrous crime are their colleagues, they cannot do proper investigations,” it stated.

The petition indicated that until proper investigations are conducted into the matter and perpetrators brought to book, nothing can comfort the bereaved families as they seek justice.

“We expect that the police will not transfer any person who was either involved in the shooting incident or on duty at the Bonokyempem Hall on that fateful day until investigations are over,” it added.

“The Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency,” Mr Joseph Osei Owusu must also retract and render an unqualified apology to the deceased family and the injured people for assertions he made in the media that the police rather shot on criminals,” the petition stated.

Meanwhile, the Bono Regional Coordinating Council, has on behalf of government presented GH¢15,000 to the victims, and the bereaved families.

So far, the GNA gathered that four of the victims have been treated and discharged from hospitals, while one was still receiving treatment at the Wenchi Government Hospital.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Jomoro Constituency has rubbished the malicious publications that its Member of Parliament (MP) Dorcas Affo-Toffey holds an Ivorian citizen.

In a statement, signed by its Constituency Chairman, Anthony Armah Benle and sighted by MyNewsGh.com, the NDC said the MP whose backside (tundra) has caught so much attention renounced her Ivorian citizenship before filing to contest as an MP.

“For the records, the Honourable Member of Parliament (MP) duly renounced her Ivorian citizenship before she filed her nomination to contest in the just ended parliamentary elections and subsequently got an overwhelming endorsement from the constituents”

“For the avoidance of doubts, Affo Toffey does not hold citizenship of any other country and does not owe allegiance to any other country other than that of the Republic of Ghana”, the statement added.

The party reassured the people of Jomoro that the tundra MP is firmly focused on bringing the best of representation and development and will therefore not be detracted by these needless media speculations.

“The NDC, therefore, urge the people of Jomoro to treat such speculations and insinuations with the greatest of contempt it deserves”, the statement concluded.

The deal, when agreed, will see to the expansion of the Accra-Tema Motorway into both three-lane and two-lane stretches.

The Sarkin Talba of Greater Accra Hausa Chief and a philanthropist, Alhaji Issaka Nettey has applauded the National Democratic Congress NDC over its the decision to seek redress at the Supreme Court.

The leadership of the NDC outrightly rejected the 2020 Presidential elections results as declared by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensah describing it as flawed.

The post-election protest by the main opposition party has claimed six lives and wounded many.

He noted that, Ghana has been a peaceful nation until the recent election adding that the current post-election protest in the country will have a negative effect on National Development.

He said one of the most recurring in Africa is electoral violence and has been the bane of most African countries.

According to him it has become political nightmares in the midst of other related violence that have both political and economic implications on development within the continent.

He revealed that Ghana has been relatively free from electoral violence, unlike other Africa Countries which have suffered rioting during and after elections adding that since the advent of multi-party democracy in 1992, Ghana had held a number of elections that observers regarded as violence free.

He said the time has come to think differently on how to resolve electoral dispute as well as to position Chiefs, Peace Council and the Judiciary to actively participate in post-election protest and violence resolution and dialogue.

He reiterated the need for all stakeholders to actively involve in making Ghana proud and attain its stands as the gate way to Africa and a beacon of democracy.

He urged Political parties not to allow the 2020 elections to break the history of peaceful electioneering in the country.

He applauded the various stakeholders namely the National Peace Council, Civil Society Organizations, Religious leaders, Non-Governmental Organisations, Traditional Rulers as well as meaning Ghanaians who added their voices to ensure peace in the country.

Alhaji Issaka Nettey also commended the ruling New Patriotic Party NPP for the manner they comported themselves in celebrating their victory without any provocation.

He called for God’s guidance in the country’s journey to finding a peaceful resolution to the political impasse the country is facing and urged opinion leaders, Chiefs, Clergy and statesmen to ensure that justice prevails.

He cautioned against the hypocritical behaviour of some prominent persons who make pronouncements that tend to instigate the youth to make negative statements against prominent personalities.

  • Court stops NDC demo against EC in Effutu constituency

The Cape Coast High Court has placed an injunction on an intended demonstration by the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) in the Effutu Constituency in the Central Region against the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

This was after the Ghana Police Service had applied to the court for an Ex-Parte injunction against the march which was scheduled for Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

The Effutu constituency, led by its 2020 parliamentary candidate, James Kofi Annan, and the constituency executives, planned a massive demonstration against the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission, in solidarity with their flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, and also against what they call “the Effutu ECOWAS Register” in the Effutu constituency.

They believe the Effutu constituency voters register is hugely over-bloated with voters imported from the neighboring constituencies.

According to them, the true winners of the 2020 parliamentary and presidential elections are James Kofi Annan and John Dramani Mahama respectfully.

According to the constituency secretary, Abraham Arthur, the party has called for a general meeting (made up of all branch executives) on Sunday, to discuss and agree on the way forward, and other courses of action.

  • NDC Petition: I want EC, other state institutions to work better Mahama

Apart from seeking to remove doubts and other reliefs in the yet-to-commence election petition, the petitioner and National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate in the just-ended polls, Mr John Dramani Mahama is also seeking to ensure that institutions in the country work effectively.

“I want a Ghana that our institutions of the state can be held to account where we can stand on principle and demand transparency without the risk of losing our lives”, the latter reacting in a televised message to Ghanaians after his party officials filed a petition on Wednesday, December 30, 2020.

“Indeed in 2012 when the election was called in my favour my opponent challenged the results as was his right and he took the matter to court. Eight long months of an election petition filed from destroying our democracy rather reinforced our commitment to it and affirmed the strength of our institutions particularly the Judiciary…”, the former President recounts.

“Some people have asked me what I hope to gain by challenging the results of this election. Let me tell you! I want perhaps the very same thing that my opponent wanted when in 2012 he challenged the results of that election”, Mr. Mahama said.

    Background

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has petitioned the Supreme Court to annul the results of Election 2020.

Ex-Mahama further wants the court to order for a re-run of the polls hence the need to issue a fiat restraining President Akufo-Addo from holding himself as the President-elect.

    Other reliefs

Other reliefs sought by the Former President include a declaration that the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensa, breached the 1992 constitution, specifically Article 63(3) with the declaration that she made on December 9, 2020.

Also, the former President is asking the apex court of the land to declare that based on the data contained in the declaration “no candidate satisfied” the more than 50 percent threshold required to be declared a winner of the presidential poll.

  • NDC Election Petition: Legal team of President Akufo-Addo ready for legal tussle – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the Legal Team of President Akufo-Addo is ready to expose the emptiness of NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama‘s Election Petition at the Supreme Court.

A statement signed and issued by Mr Yaw Buaben Asamoa, NPP’s Communications Director, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, on Thursday, said the court process would indeed, reaffirm President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the true winner of the 2020 Presidential Election.

It said the NPP’s response in court would show that the NDC had no material evidence of value and expose the Party’s false claims that its flag bearer, John Mahama won the just-ended election.

“The NPP is assured that the 7th December 2020 Elections was won fair and square. Indeed, the evidence presented by the NDC has only reassured the people of Ghana that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won the elections.

Mr Mahama, through his lawyers, on Wednesday, December 30,2020 filed a petition at the country’s apex court to legally challenge the 2020 Presidential Election, which the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa, declared President Akufo-Addo, as President-elect on December 9,2020.

“The fact of transparency of the General Election was also resoundingly affirmed by the myriad of local and international observers that participated in the electoral process,” the statement said.

The NPP urged Mr Mahama to call the NDC’s supporters to order and halt the street protests to ensure peace and tranquility in the country.

“It is also unfortunate that even after filing the Petition in court, the NDC led by John Dramani Mahama continues to incite supporters to pour onto the streets to cause chaos and anarchy.

” They have attempted and continue to use lies, threats, violence, and intimidation to seek forlornly to overrule the manifest will of the people as freely expressed on 7th December, 2020.

“We are absolutely confident that the facts and figures as presented in court, even by the NDC, will very easily, in a transparent and indisputable manner, reaffirm the expressed will of the voting public that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won the 2020 Presidential Election “one touch” and convincingly so.

The statement said it was quite worrying that Mr Mahama, through his social media handles, continues to incite violence even as he invokes his right to use the court process to settle his grievance.

It said Mr Mahama wrote on his Facebook and Twitter walls that while in court, the NDC will continue all legitimate actions, including protests, to demand the enforcement of the rule of law and protection of life and property of the good people of Ghana.

That, the NPP viewed the action as unfortunate and unbefitting of a former President of the Republic.

” In his latest Press Conference, he (Mahama) explained he is going to court only “to remove doubt.” Does he need the Supreme Court to remove his doubts about losing the elections?”

The statement said the several attempts by the NDC to use lies, threats, violence and intimidation to overrule the will of the people is disappointingly undemocratic of Mr Mahama and a breach of the Peace Pact signed on December 4, ahead of the election.

“We call on John Dramani Mahama to immediately retract his insightful statements to his supporters. It is highly irresponsible of him to commence the judicial process yet still admonish his supporters to continue with the violent protests that have threatened the security and peace of Ghanaians,” the NPP said.

It said when NPP filed a Petition in 2012, the Party admonished its supporters not to hit the streets and they compiled and urged the NDC and its flag bearer to do the same.

The statement said the NPP is confident that due process would prevail, and the Supreme Court would deal with the Petition in accordance with the rule of law.

  • NDC files election petition today

Barring any last minute changes, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will today file a petition against the 2020 Presidential result declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, December 9.

The Herald is informed that the party’s lawyers led by Tsatsu Tsikata, will be focusing on the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa to justify the numbers and percentages she mentioned, as having been obtained by the various Presidential candidates.

This is not to overturn the Presidential results as declared but to establish the actual votes obtained by the two frontrunners in the election; Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the NDC.

After the filing, Mr Mahama will address a press conference at a location yet to be announced.

The NDC Legal team is made up of Tsatsu Tsikata, Nana Ato Dadzie, Fui Tsikata, Dominic Ayeni, Tony Lithur, Dr. Bassit Bamba, Samuel Cudjoe, Marietta Brew Appiah- Oppong, Victor Kojoga Adawudu, Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, Dr. Abraham Amaliba, Dr. Rainer Akumperigya and Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi in the Volta Region.

Some of the lawyers, hold the view that per Jean Mensa’s numbers, the worst-case scenario for the just-ended election was a runoff between Akufo-Addo and John Mahama, but not an outright victory for the NPP candidate.

In this regard, Jean Mensa, like Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan in 2013 in the election petition, will be the focal point of the NDC’s legal team, hoping to extract as much information from her as possible to buttress the claims by both mathematicians and statisticians that Mrs Mensa’s mathematics was wrong.

The many times she changed the figures she declared but kept saying the changes were not affecting the overall percentages obtained by the 17 candidates who took part in the race, has heightened the suspicions that something sinister took place behind the scenes ahead of the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as president-elect.

The Herald’s information from the NDC legal team is that, while some of the lawyers felt that the party should go with the audited results by focusing on various infractions noted at the polling stations and collation centres, others believe that the time allotted the hearing is too short to traverse that path, hence Jean Mensa should just be made to justify her numbers.

The lawyers pushing for the infractions to be placed before the Supreme Court judges insist there had been ballot box stuffing and over voting in certain parts of the country, particularly the Ashanti Region, and this must be dealt with by the apex court.

The group has results from over 18,000 polling stations to push their case, however, those against the infractions are arguing that the Supreme Court, had in the 2013 election petition, filed by Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Obtsebi-Lamptey, made a determination on that, saying it is not enough ground to overturn the declared result.

For now, all attention is on Chief Justice Anin Yeboah, as to whether he would allow cameras into the courtroom as happened in 2013, when the then Chief Justice Georgina Wood, made history by opening the doors of the courtroom to TV cameras to enable Ghanaians to follow the proceedings presided by the now retired, Justice William Atuguba.

Meanwhile, a member of the NDC legal team, Dr. Amaliba, has intimated that the party would make a request to the Chief Justice Anin Yeboah to repeat the 2013 scenario.

Dr. Amaliba said such a request would be in the interest of fairness.

Chief Justice Wood, in 2013, allowed cameras into the courtroom, following a demand made by Gabby Asare-Otchere Darko of the NPP for a live broadcast of the proceedings of their petition contesting the 2012 general elections result.

Last Saturday, the NDC’s Lawyer, Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, formally announced that the petition would be filed this week Wednesday, but The Herald has picked up a report that the party has decided to do so a day ahead of time.

Also on the bill, is the parliamentary results of the Techiman South Constituency, where the results declared in favour of Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsa, has been challenged by the NDC, which is demanding some documents as proof that the NPP candidate had won the seat at a place where its Presidential candidate John Mahama, beat Akufo-Addo with 52,034 as against 46,379 votes.

The NDC insists that its candidate, Christopher Bayere, won the seat by 293 votes, but the EC is yet to release the document to the NDC to clear its doubt over that constituency.

Dr. Amaliba told Citi News “We expect to be treated fairly, this is a national issue. We also expect that if we are able to make our case beyond a reasonable doubt, I am sure that the Supreme Court will hold that Nana Akufo-Addo, did not attain the required 50 +1 votes.”

“Indeed, we also expect that the petition will be telecast live. Any attempt to hinder that will create the impression that the hearing is not going to be fair, so we will put in the request to have it telecast live,” he indicated.

The NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, has refused to accept Akufo-Addo’s election victory.

He described the election results announced by the EC as “fictionalised.”

“I stand before you tonight unwilling to accept the fictionalised result of a flawed election,” Mr Mahama had said at a press conference.

“What we witnessed across the country from Monday 7th December 2020, exposed a deliberate plan to manipulate and predetermine the results of the election in favour of the incumbent candidate Nana Akufo-Addo,” he added.

The EC announced President Akufo-Addo, as the rightful winner of the December 7 polls on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, despite concerns raised by the NDC.

President Akufo-Addo won with 6,730,587 (51.302%) of the total votes cast.

Mr Mahama came second with 6,213,182 votes representing 47.359%.

  • Akufo-Addo thinks Ghanaians are imbeciles NDC MP

Member of Parliament for Builsa South Constituency in the Upper East Region Dr Clement Apaak is incensed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently described the just-ended elections as free, fair, transparent and peaceful.

President Akufo-Addo has described the December 7 elections as such in his Christmas message to Ghanaians.

But Dr Apaak of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has rejected results of the polls, said the president may be taking Ghanaians for fools.

“Well if true, he must think Ghanaians are imbeciles!,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“How could an election that saw the killing of citizens, Akufo-Addo military/vigilante raids on collation centres, attacks on NDC MPs elect, padding of votes for Akufo-Addo and reducing JMs votes at regional collation centres, the changing of Presidential results 6 times, be described as such?” he quizzed.

    Find his write-up below:

Merry Christmas Is it true that Mr. Akufo-Addo described the 2020 elections as transparent, free, fair, credible and safe in his Xmas message? Well if true, he must think Ghanaians are imbeciles!

How could an election that saw the killing of citizens, Akufo-Addo military/vigilante raids on collation centres, attacks on NDC MPs elect, padding of votes for Akufo-Addo and reducing JMs votes at regional collation centres, the changing of Presidential results 6 times, be described as such?

The 2020 elections were NOT transparent, free, fair, credible and safe! The outcome of the 2020 elections are NOT credible, neither were the processes leading to the outcome transparent, free, fair and safe.

Jesus stood up against injustice! Jesus challenged exploitative temple practices! Jesus preached fairness and equity. Jesus would not accept fictionalised results of a flawed election.

    Merry Christmas!

  • NDC MPs clash with police at EC Headquarters

Things turned confrontational at the Electoral Commission’s Headquarters in Accra when some Minority members in parliament stormed the Electoral Commission’s Headquarters to present a petition.

A number of about 50 MPs who were clad in black attire were initially stopped at the Ridge roundabout but managed to cross the barricade while they were being pushed by the police.

They were also stopped at the Electoral Commission office at the entrance again stopped by the police. Some members of parliament were even pushed to the ground by these police personnel.

Some MPs who described the situation as unfortunate said they were only there to present a petition to the Electoral Commission adding that it was not a demonstration but a peaceful walk to the EC office.

Even though the content of the petition is yet to be revealed the NDC has consistently said they do not accept the results of the just-ended polls which was used to declare Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president.

The NDC has since the declaration embarked on several protests across the country.

The Savanah Region is also currently protesting against the EC stating there will be no peace in the country until John Dramani Mahama is declared the president-elect of the country.

During a protest in Tamale First Vice Chairman of the NDC, Chief Sofo Awudu Azorka also said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends swearing in John Dramani Mahama as President on January 7.

Adding that the NDC believes that John Dramani Mahama is the legitimate President of Ghana and no human can change that.

  • Ignore false rumours, NDC is not behind recent fire outbreaks – Francis Sosu

The Member of Parliament-elect for the Madina constituency, Francis Xavier Sosu has dismissed claims on social media that the National Democratic Congress(NDC) is behind recent fire outbreaks in some markets across the country.

According to him, the NDC has a stake in the country and will not support anybody to destroy properties for political power.

He adds that this accusation is a deliberate attempt by the governing party to create an impression that the NDC is being desperate for power.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, the MP-elect for Madina Constituency urged Ghanaians to disregard such rumour.

“I realised that there were rumours on social media suggesting that the NDC is behind the burning of some markets. I want everyone to know that the NDC as a political party has as much stake in Ghana as much as the ruling party so the NDC and John Mahama will not support anybody to go round and destroy property as a way of gaining political power.”

“I want everyone to disregard that rumour as something cooked either by the opposition party to create the impression that the NDC is being desperate. We are not desperate but just trying to uphold the will of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, has been picked up by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), formerly known as Bureau of National Investigations in connection to the recent fire outbreak in the country.

There have been some fire outbreaks in some major markets in the country.

Market centres like Odwana, Koforidua, Kantamanto, Asankragwa and, lately, Kaneshie, have been torched in one way or the other.

Investigations are currently ongoing to know the cause of these fire outbreaks.

  • NDC renders unconditional apology to the media

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has apologised to the media for verbal and physical attacks from some of its members.

Some media personnel have come under attack from members of the party for allegedly calling the recently held election in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Some believe the media is the reason why the Electoral Commission (EC) declared President Akufo-Addo winner of the election.

A few of these personnel have vowed not to attend any programme held by the NDC.

Charles Owusu of the Forestry Commission is meanwhile wondering why members of the biggest opposition party keep attacking the media and at the same time expect them to cover their programmes.

    ‘Unconditional apology’

Speaking to these attacks in an interview on Neat FM’s Me Man Nti programme, Sammy Gyamfi, a National Communications Officer of the NDC said there’s no justification for such attacks.

He said even though “there’s been genuine cause for leading members of the NDC to criticize certain media organizations, you don’t have the right to take the law into your hands”

“…but we’ve realized it’s escalating and increasing the tension; leading to insults and attacks from our members…you don’t have the right to take the law into your hands whether they (media) do the right thing or not leave it in the eyes of public opinion,” he said.

…adding: “we’re sorry for everything; under no circumstance should any supporter attack a media house no matter what…you don’t have the right to take the law into your own hands and so as leaders of the party we take full responsibility for that; we regret that and we are very sorry”.

  • Victim of Ablekuma Central collation centre shooting dead

Thirty-year-old Ibrahim Abass has been pronounced dead after battling for his life at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital.

This comes after the deceased was shot by a military man at the Ablekuma Central collation centre on December 7.

The news was confirmed by the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ablekuma Central, Sumaila Ibrahim on Wednesday, December 12 to Citi News.

Reacting to the demise of NDC sympathizer, Mr Ibrahim said, “He is the same guy who was shot on the election day at the collation centre in Ablekuma Central. He was an NDC party member who was at the collation centre to give our people morale. One of the military officers opened fire on them. Some of his intestines came out. And we took him to the hospital, he was in intensive unit till he passed on this morning.”

In the same vein, a journalist, Pius Kwanin Asiedu of Ghana Newswatch online has been suffering from gunshot injuries following a similar incident where he was shot in the leg at the same collation centre.

  • NDC pink sheets in Techiman South mysteriously burnt Iddrisu

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not been able to retrieve pink sheets from the Techiman South constituency which will serve as concrete evidence to show that the party won that seat because it has been destroyed.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, the returning officer at Techiman South confirmed to him that the pink sheets were burnt.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament when the House reconvened on Monday, 14 December 2020, Mr. Iddrisu condemned the spate of casualties recorded during the elections.

He said: “I was in Techiman personally and I was not pleased with what I observed. That an electoral officer cannot even make available to a political party declared results or results to be declared. That cannot be so in our multi-party constitutional democracy. Whether a returning officer or a district officer to claim somewhere that his copy meant for a political party, the NDC got burnt. We are still following through but what is significant is the loss of lives in Techiman. We had to visit one or two bereaved families arising out of shooting which resulted in loss of lives.”

He continued: “That remains a negative blot on the conscience of our democracy to choose our leaders, lives must not be lost and lost needlessly. There are still contested outcomes in some other constituencies across the country, in Sene.”

Mr. Iddrisu stressed that “we still have some dark clouds against what has been declared by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.”

He, however, congratulated the newly elected Members of Parliament, “particularly the old ones who have had the privilege and honour of the electorate in their various constituencies to re-elect them to serve them.”

But in swift rebuttal, the Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu condemned the Minority NDC for attacking the elections conducted by the Electoral Commission.

He indicated that the NDC must arm themselves with ample evidence to counter their claims.

According to him, without concrete evidence, their objections against the outcome of the elections do not hold water.

“If the people want to really stand on the foundation of truth they should really be equipped with the evidence of truthfulness before they make any proclamation because if you don’t have the pink sheets, you cannot make any allusions,” he noted.

  • Election 2020: Allow NDC to protest on streets, well go to court when we have to Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has justified the street protests by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the results of the December 7 elections as announced by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

He said demonstrations are not illegal therefore, the party cannot be criticised for resorting to that modus operandi to make its concerns known.

The former Deputy Minister of Education said the NDC will go to the Supreme Court to challenge the outcome of the elections if it has to do so.

His comments come on the heels of the main opposition party receiving flak from a cross section of the Ghanaian public for calling on its members to hit the streets to reject the poll results rather than resorting to the courts to address those grievances.

The Presidential Candidate of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama said the party will not accept the results of the polls because in their view, the elections management body manipulated the figures in favour of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Monday December 14, Mr Ablakwa said “These are not unconstitutional. I hear a lot of commentaries on why NDC will not go to court.

“We will go to court when we have to but it is also peoples legitimate right to protest, to picket, to engage in civil disobedience.”

He said “As our flagbearer announced, there is a forensic audit team that is looking at all the pink sheets putting our case together for a possible change challenge at the Supreme Court if we have to go there.”

  • NDC supporters ‘attack’ Peace Council members Rev. Adu-Gyamfi

Members of the National Peace Council (NPC) who intervened to engage the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over their rejection of the results of the election declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) were attacked by some supporters of the NDC on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the NPC, Rev Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi who made this known said the incident has “traumatized” some of the members of the NPC and they feel that they should be allowed to psychologically recompose themselves before they can re-engage the leadership of the NDC.

The incidents reportedly happened in the residence of the NDC presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and the party’s national headquarters at Adabraka in Accra.

“We were attacked, two of our vehicles were damaged and we thought that that was very very unfortunate.”

“When we met the leadership [of the NDC], they were very cooperative in terms of our discussions, and we thought those incidents were very very unfortunate, and it shouldn’t happen again.”

Rev Adu Gyamfi, who made this known in a radio interview with Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday night [December 10, 2020] said the members were safe.”

“The board met today [Thursday]” but added that “most of the members are traumatized because the attacks were very physical and in some situations, some gunshots were fired while we were there. And so most members are traumatized and they think that we need to let them maybe, psychologically recompose themselves before we can re-engage,” Rev Dr. Adu-Gyamfi said.
