  • NDC’s claim that Akufo-Addo is using military to overturn election results ‘false, unfounded’ Nitiwul

The Minister of Defence, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, has debunked claims made by the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, that President Akufo-Addo is attempting to use the Ghana Armed Forces to “steal the victory” of the biggest opposition party in the 2020 general elections.

While addressing the media on Tuesday, 8 December 2020, Mr Mahama said: “Some of what is happening is unacceptable and Nana Akufo-Addo continues to show credentials that are very undemocratic: You cannot use the military to try to overturn some of the results in constituencies that we have won and, so, we would resist any attempt to subvert the sovereign will of the people. The right thing must be done”.

The Ministry of Defence, in a statement issued by Mr Nitiwul on Wednesday, 9 December 2020, however, dismissed the claims as “false and without any foundation”.

The statement indicated that: “For the 2020 general elections, the military is deployed to support the Ghana Police Service and not to engage in politics”.

“The general public is, therefore, implored to ignore the malicious propaganda against the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) but rather co-operate with them and the other security agencies”.

The Ministry of Defence also reiterated that “the Ghana Armed Forces is a very professional institution and its members are well-respected across the entire world for their professionalism, service to mankind and neutrality”.

In view of this, the ministry noted that “it will not accept any unsubstantiated allegation against the GAF as a body or any of its members without proof”.

The Director of Elections of the opposition National Democratic Congress Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has called on polling agents of the party to stay alert during the counting of ballots as polls near closure.

According to the party, efforts by the ruling NPP to rig the elections are being monitored and thwarted.

“We call on all our agents and all Ghanaians to stay alert. When voting is done and counting begins, go to the polling station and monitor the counting. And our polling agents we are asking to be extra vigilant during the ballot counting, especially in the Ashanti region,” Mr Afriyie Ankrah noted at a press conference in Accra Monday.

The National Democratic Congress has alleged that some EC officials in various polling stations in the Ashanti region are directing voters to vote for NPP candidates in both the parliamentary and presidential polls.

The NDC also alleged that the incumbent MP, KT Hammond in the company of some thugs scuttled the peaceful voting process and attempted to intimidate some voters.

The NDC among a litany of allegations also claimed that some voters in Ejisu were handed already thumb printed ballot papers and urged the voters to drop them in the ballot boxes.

  • NDC constant inconsistency worrying and sad Oppong-Nkrumah

Information Minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has expressed worry over the consistent inconsistency of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC).

His worry stems from the fact that the NDC does not have a consistent message and has to be amending their manifesto at this eleventh hour when people are decided on who they will vote for.

To him, for this amendment done by the NDC, they cannot be taken seriously and allowed to run the affairs of the country.

  • NDC administration to investigate activities of ‘Operation Vanguard’, ‘Galamstop’ – Mahama

The next administration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will investigate the activities of “Operation Vanguard” and “Galamstop”, which were established to curb the activities of illegal miners involved in the small scale mining industry.

John Dramani Mahama, Leader and flagbearer of the NDC, said he would probe their activities to ensure that those involved in any corrupt deals were made to face the full rigours of the law.

He said, “Operation Vanguard” and “Operation Galamstop” were established by the current Government to help streamline the small scale mining industry, however, they ended up seizing the machinery of small scale miners such as excavators; saying the excavators were allegedly sold to certain individuals.

He said some elements in “Operation Vanguard” and “Operation Galamstop”, who took advantage of their operations to commit crimes were still walking free; and that he was sounding a note of caution to them that NDC Government was coming back to power.

He said those of them who stole people’s items, who seized people’s items for their own selfish interest and were still walking free, would be investigated and those found wanting would have charges brought against them.

The Presidential Candidate said this at a mini-rally at Mponyanse in the Adansi Akrofoum Constituency in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region, as part of his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.

The campaign has since been suspended following the demise of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Mr Mahama gave small scale miners the assurance that his next administration would track down all their seized excavators and return them to their rightful owners.

He said the next NDC government would grant presidential pardon to all small scale miners, who were imprisoned for engaging in galamsey activities.

He said the next NDC government would also see to it that mining licenses and concessions which were illegitimately seized were returned to their rightful owners.

Mr Mahama appealed to Ghanaians to vote the NDC back to power on December 7 for it to continue its good works.

Nana Kwabena Anti, Ankobeahene of Amponyanse, appealed to the Presidential Candidate to fix their roads and also establish a senior high school (SHS) in the town for them, should he win on December 7.

  • Let’s work hard to keep NDC out of power Akufo-Addo charges Assembly Members

President Akufo-Addo has charged the leadership and members of the Greater Accra Association of Assembly Members (GAAAM), to join forces with his administration ahead of the 7th December Presidential and Parliamentary elections to ensure that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), keeps the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) out of power.

The President gave the charge when he addressed the association at the Jubilee House when they paid a courtesy call on him on Tuesday, 10 November 2020.

“We all have to join forces and fight to ensure that we do not allow the NDC to come back to office. That should never happen in the upcoming elections. It will require that we join forces to prevent them from coming back to office” President Akufo-Addo said.

“The atmosphere in the country is good for us. Ghanaians are largely happy with the work of my administration thus far and what is important now is to go from house to house and to drive home our enviable record from now till the 7th December elections. We can’t afford any complacency, because elections are not won until the last vote has been counted and we have to make sure that everybody who has registered, will come out and vote in this year’s election” President Akufo-Addo added.

    Payment of Assembly Members

On the subject of the payment of Assembly Members which has become a controversial issue since former President John DDramani Mahama and the 2020 Presidential candidate of the NDC, promised to pay all Assembly Members a monthly salary, Spokesperson for the association, Stephen Kwasi Acquah, in his address, noted that any decision to pay them a monthly salary is welcome news.

However, he indicated that Mr. Mahama, who is today promising to pay Assembly Members salaries, did same in his party’s 2012 manifesto but failed to implement the promise when he won power.

To this end, Mr. Acquah observed that their association considers the 2020 manifesto promise of the NDC and its presidential candidate to pay Assembly Members monthly salaries as a promise without any substance.

“We are only confident in one thing and that is, for you, Mr. President to make time to even meet us today, demonstrates that you are the President who will make our lives better from 2021 in your second term,” he said.

  • Both NDC, NPP scored satisfactorily fair on IMANIFesto Franklin Cudjoe

Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has moved to quell the political interpretations being given to the 2020 IMANIFesto assessment report.

The IMANIFesto initiative by the policy think tank analyses the status of implementation of pledges contained in the manifesto of the ruling party.

It also assesses the feasibility of manifestos presented by political parties before elections and the impact of their promises on the livelihood of citizens.

In the latest IMANIFesto report on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, IMANI scored the administration 56.77%, three-points higher than it scored for the National Democratic Congress in 2012 under John Dramani Mahama.

Following the release of the final scorecard for the governing NPP on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, NPP and government communicators have sought suggest that the NPP performs better than the NDC.

But in a swift rebuttal on Thursday, November 5, 2020, Franklin Cudjoe said although the NPP obtained a high percentage point than the NDC, both parties obtained the same rating.

“In 2016, NDC’s 540 promises were final score-carded 53% by the IMANIfesto assessor. In 2020, NPP’s 510 promises were final score-carded 56.77% by the IMANIfesto assessor. Both parties performed ‘satisfactorily fair’ on the IMANIfesto scale,” he wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Information Minister, Pius Hadzide, has criticised the methodology used by IMANI on grounds that it fails to incorporate the views of the public in its assessment.

  • Silence isn’t golden here; respond to EC – Kweku Baako charges NDC

Seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has challenged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to respond to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) statement on the party’s allegations.

The NDC, over the weekend, accused the electoral body of colluding with one of the seven printing houses printing the ballot papers, the Assembly Press which the party says belongs to an appointee of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

    NDC Allegations

The party alleged, at a press conference on Sunday, November 1, 2020, that the EC is printing about 150,000 surplus ballots aside from the 5 percent required excess ballot papers per polling station.

“By convention and practice, the EC prints an extra 5 percent of the total registered voters in each polling station to cater for spoiled ballots but what is surprising this time is that the EC is rather printing an addition 5 percent of the total registered voters per constituency in the total number of ballot papers to be printed. What this translates into is that more ballot papers are being printed in excess of the 5 percent extra ballot papers required for the polling station. From the ballot statistics from the printing houses as coming from the EC, we (NDC) have analyzed the figure from 13 regions and observed that there is an excess of over 150,000 ballot papers been printed beyond the extra 5% required.”

“This happened at the Assembly press which is one of the contractors printing the ballot papers, and we (NDC) also found out that, the Assembly Press is printing additional ballot papers at a different location on the blind side of the agents of the political parties. The NDC is completely upset with the irregularities as the MD of the Assembly Press who is an appointee of the President was an aspirant who contested the NPP 2020 parliamentary primaries in the Nkawkaw constituency and the Convener of Let My Vote Count Alliance, a pressure group of the NPP.”

    EC Press Statement

Reacting to the NDC’s allegations, the EC issued a press statement to clarify the matter.

”The Electoral Commission finds it difficult to understand why the NDC would seek to cause fear and apprehension around a transparent and open process such as the printing of ballots. This is unacceptable.”

The Commission settled the facts saying ”it has been a standard practice for the Commission to print ballot papers in excess of five percent (5%) to cater for instances such as spoilt ballots. This has been the practice since 1992 and the present Commission has not changed this policy. In line with this policy, all Printing Houses have been directed to print the 2020 ballot papers in excess of 5% for all thirty-eight thousand, six hundred and thirty (38,630) Polling Stations across the country. It is important to note that since 1992, ballot papers for both the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections are printed in booklets of 10, 25, 50 and 100 for all Polling Stations”.

”This has always been the practice and the NDC is well aware of this. For the information of the General Public, all Political Parties have accredited Agents in all the Printing Houses who monitor and keep a 24-hour watch of the printing process. The transparency and openness of the process make it impossible for any Printing House to manipulate and compromise the process as all printing is done in the full glare of the Agents of the Political Parties”, the EC added and assured Ghanaians that ”each ballot paper will be accounted for. Not one ballot paper will be included in a package that has not been accounted for. This will not happen. Our processes are open, transparent and robust and will remain so”.

    Kweku Baako Dares NDC

Speaking on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Kweku Baako Jnr scrutinized the EC’s press statement and reading portions of it queried the NDC to respond to the pertinent issues broached by the electoral management body.

”The Commission has never provided the Political Parties with serial numbers of ballot papers. The Commission cannot generate the serial numbers of all seventeen million (17m) plus ballot papers. True or False? The NDC, what is their position on this?

”As has been the practice, serial numbers are generated by the Printing Houses and are provided to both the Commission and Political Parties after each batch of printing is completed. True or False? What has been the precedent since we began our election history? They should come out and tell us”, he stated.

On allegations that the EC hasn’t provided serial numbers of the ballot papers to the political parties, the seasoned journalist asked the NDC to furnish Ghanaians with answers to the Commission’s clarifications which reads ”the packaged/bagged ballots are sealed by both the Electoral Commission and Political Parties. Indeed, each Political Party fixes their party seals on the packaged ballot papers. The Political Parties take a record of all seal numbers of each packaged ballot. The packing of the ballots is undertaken in the presence of all the Agents of the Political Parties”.

    ”True or False?” he questioned.

Mr. Baako also sought the NDC’s response to the Commission’s reply on their accusations that it has colluded with the Assembly Press.

He asked the NDC to tell Ghanaians how falsehood in the EC’s reply that ”the Assembly Press is a State institution which at any point in time is headed by Appointees of an incumbent Government. It is also a well-known fact that the Assembly Press headed by Appointees of the NDC printed 1992, 1996, 2000, 2012 and 2016 ballot papers”.

”True or False? Did they know? Can they challenge these details…?” he further queried.

”Let them be bold and put it out there. In reaction to this November 3rd press release from the EC, the response shouldn’t be that of silence. Silence will not be golden in this context…They should respond to the EC press statement dated November 3rd, 2020”, he concluded.

  • Disregard NDC’s attempts to cause fear and panic ahead of elections – EC

The Electoral Commission, (EC) has refuted claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the printing of ballot papers for the December 7 elections.

The largest opposition party had on Sunday raised concerns about the printing of the ballots, calling out the Commission for allowing the Assembly Press, headed by a known member of the New Patriotic Party, to be part of firms printing the ballots.

The NDC also said the Commission has failed to provide ballot statistics since it started printing the ballot papers, further accusing the Electoral Management Body of printing in excess of 150,000 against the norm.

But a statement issued by the EC on Tuesday, November 3 said they have asked the public to disregard the claims as false.

“The Electoral Commission finds it difficult to understand why the NDC would seek to cause fear and apprehension around a transparent and open process such as the printing of ballots. This is unacceptable,” the Commission said in a statement.

“The Commission assures the citizenry that each ballot paper will be accounted for. Not one ballot paper will be included in a package that has not been accounted for. This will not happen. Our processes are open, transparent and robust and will remain so,” it added.

The EC entreat the General Public to disregard the attempts by the NDC to cause fear and panic and heighten tension in the lead up to the December 2020 Elections.

Speaking during a community engagement held in Abotoase within the Biakoye constituency of the Oti region, where the running mate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman was officially introduced to the constituents, Mr. Ablakwa said the creation of new regions is “no news” but developing it is necessary.

The MP said, the NPP government should have considered creating of avenues that will give jobs to the youth in the region, bring infrastructure development including water and sanitation.

He, however, noted that the Oti region have benefited from the NDC government over the past years under infrastructure development such as the E-Block, roads, schools and health infrastructures.

Mr. Ablakwa, therefore, called on the people to vote for the NDC in the come December 7 elections if they want completion of abandoned projects in the area. He said Mr. John Dramani Mahama is a visionary leader hence they should make history by bringing him back to power in 2021 to enable the next John and Jane government to develop the area and give job opportunities to the people.

On her part, Prof. Jane Naana urged the constituents not to consider “skirt and blouse” but vote for John Mahama and the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Kwadzo Aboagye, this to enable the NDC to have majority in parliament to enable smoothness in the course of developing the region.

  • Asawase NDC supporters storm police station, chant for release of 10 colleagues

Some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asawase constituency of the Ashanti region have besieged the regional police headquarters over the arrest of 10 of their members.

Clad in party t-shirts, the NDC members are demanding the immediate release of their colleagues.

The NDC activists were arrested by the anti-robbery squad of the Ghana police service in front of the office of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Muntaka Mubarak, at Aboabo Police Office, after returning from campaign activities on Saturday, 25 October 2020.

The reason for their arrest is unknown but the Member of Parliament for the area said they were picked up for allegedly being robbery suspects.

Mr Mubarak said some regional executives of the party, including the regional organiser, Esham Alhassan; the regional Chairman, Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi; and the regional Secretary, Kwame Zu, have gone to the police headquarters over the matter.

Addressing the media, Mr Mubarak said the arrested activists are not criminals.

He said his vision was to implement inclusive and sustainable-development that cuts across all sectors and reiterated his determination to complete all abandoned projects.

Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for AAK said development was the backbone of every progressive nation and urged the people to vote for him and Mr Mahama to implement what he described as “the massive development programme”.

For his part, Nana Okum Gyata VI, Ankobeahen of Abakrampa thanked Mr Mahama for ensuring that every corner of the country benefitted from some form of development during his tenure as President.

  • NDC govt to prosecute crime perpetrators in Kasoa

The Awutu Senya East Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Stephen Ofosu Agyare, has warned that a future NDC government will investigate and prosecute anyone involved in any atrocity in the Constituency.

The Chairman said people have committed serious crimes under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) but because they are members of the government, they are left to go uninvestigated and unprosecuted.

Chairman Ofosu Agyare gave the warning in an interview with Onua FM on Wednesday, when the station took its morning show to Kasoa.

He was commenting on alleged shooting by the Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson ,and the burning of some motor bikes by some suspected supporters of the NPP during the voter registration exercise.

The Chairman said criminal cases do not have expired time so even if these cases have not been prosecuted, an NDC government will ensure that these people are brought to book.

  • NDC alarmed at worsening national security situation in Volta Region

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is alarmed by the significant deterioration of the national security situation in the Volta Region, following two separate secessionist attacks on residents and installations last week and earlier this week despite earlier threats and clear warning signals.

The secessionist groups insist the Volta region is independent Western Togoland.

Last week, members of HSGF blocked roads leading to the region, hoisted their flags, captured three police officers and exchanged gunfire with security agencies as parts of agitation for their independence.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 29 September 2020, a sister separatist group attacked the STC yard in Ho and burnt two of their buses.

The NDC says the attacks by the groups “are a clear indication of the failure of the government under President Nana Akufo-Addo and the National Security Council which he chairs.”

The party in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo bemoaned the silence of the President on the matter.

“While property has been destroyed and lives lost, the people of Ghana are yet to hear a comment by the President condemning these acts of treason and lawlessness, let alone consoling the victims, and taking urgent action as appropriate to restore law and order. This is what Ghanaians expect from their President who incidentally is the Chairman of ECOWAS,” the statement said.

“We do not want to believe that the inaction of the President and National Security Council is deliberate and calculated at achieving a sinister political motive including the suppressing of votes in the NDC strongholds. This is already sufficient apprehension caused by these events that suggest complicity of officialdom to cause fear and human insecurity in that part of the country as a justification for an intimidating security presence the type of which was witnessed during the voter registration exercise only a few months ago,” it added.

The NDC further noted that this sequence of events cumulatively constitutes a threat to national peace, unity, territorial integrity and the sovereignty of Ghana and is, thus, calling for urgent action for the restoration of normalcy.

The party said it is closely monitoring the security situation along the Eastern corridor and the country as a whole and has called on all Ghanaians to rally together to preserve national unity, peace and stability “particularly at this time of the final preparations towards the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.”

  • Opoku-Agyemang assures workers of better solutions under NDC

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says the socio-economic hardships facing Ghanaian workers, especially in the informal sector can be resolved.

“The NDC has provided the solutions before, and we will do it again when given the mandate by the people to return to power,” Prof Opoku-Agyemang said.

Interacting with traders and artisans at a town hall meeting at Twifo-Praso in the Central Region on Tuesday, 29 September 2020 as part of her tour of the area, the former Education Minister described the halt in support facilities for traders and artisans under the present administration as regrettable.

Responding to concerns raised by representatives of hairdressers, seamstresses, tailors, market women, commercial motor riders and drivers associations, she noted that all incentives advanced to the various groups, during the previous NDC administration, would be restored.

In addition, she said the payment of stipends to apprentices would be restored, adding that start-up packages would be provided to enable trainees who complete their apprenticeship to effectively commence their small scale businesses to also create jobs.

Touching on a concern over the deplorable state of the Twifo-Praso market, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang gave assurance that the market would be properly developed as part of the NDC infrastructure development agenda.

“If it comes to building modern markets, you know what we can do because we have the track record,” she said, citing the multipurpose Kejetia market project as an example.

The NDC, she explained, would continue to prioritise the development of markets because of the essential role markets play in the local economies, saying the Twifo-Praso market would not be neglected.

Earlier, the running mate interacted with commercial drivers and commuters at the Twifo-Praso main lorry station, where she assured them of better living condition under the next NDC administration.

  • NDC executives charged to monitor Thursday’s voter registration

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has charged all the 34 constituency executives to spend all their time at the various Electoral Commission (EC) offices on October 1, 2020.

The NDC Chairman said all the executives should be vigilant during the one-day voter registration exercise.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it will re-open the voter register on Thursday to give opportunity to those who have attained the age of 18 and citizens who for one reason or the other were not able to register in the just ended registration exercise to do so.

The registration is expected to take place in the district offices nationwide from 7am to 6pm.
Speaking at the launch of the Ablekuma West Constituency campaign on Sunday, September 27, Mr. Ade Coker alleged that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has planned to rig the elections, therefore the exercise is meant to register those who are not meant to register.

He said the NPP has planned to register their members who came to Ghana after the airport was reopened and so the executives in all the constituencies should spend their time at the district offices to ensure that those registering are indeed from the constituency.

The Ablekuma West NDC Candidate, Rev Kweku Addo, sharing his seven thematic pillars, pledged to the constituents to institute a regular meeting with them to ensure their needs are addressed.

He added that education and sports development, empowerment support and infrastructural development would be backbone of his tenure.

Rev Addo noted that sanitation, security and recreational facilities would be created in the constituency.

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South Constituency, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, who is also the former Mayor of Accra, alluded that he knew the challenges in the Constituency and Rev Addo would be in a better position to solve them.

  • NDC will not accept any intimidation from security services – Minority Leader

The Minority Leader in Parliament has cautioned that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not accept any form of intimidation or misconduct from the security services in the upcoming December elections.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, any form of abuse or misuse of office by the security services will not be tolerated by the NDC.

He made the comments at a gathering of chiefs, people and members of the Garage Associations in Sunyani Magazine just before the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, disclosed the suspension of his tour in the Bono Region.

Mr Iddrisu said the police and the military, according to their mandate, are expected to be neutral state institutions and must in turn act appropriately.

The Minority Leader warned that the NDC will neither accept a repetition of the state-sponsored violence and intimidation that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019.

  • Government has collapsed PBC, cheated cocoa farmers – NDC

The Western North Regional youth organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Awudu Lamin has accused the ruling NPP of collapsing the cocoa sector.

He claims that the Produce Buying Company (PBC) in that region has collapsed because the government has not managed the company well.

He asserts that it was only under the NDC that Ghana managed to get 1 million metric tons of cocoa with its lowest being around 900,000.

But under the NPP, their projections have reduced drastically hovering around 700,000. It shows that they have failed cocoa farmers in the region.

He indicated that under the NDC, fertilizers were given out for free but under the NPP, the fertilizers are being sold at Ghc80 but sold in Ivory Coast at GHc40.

Awudu Lamin told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that cocoa farmers have been cheated and denied what they deserve and until the NPP is voted out, cocoa farmers will continue to suffer.

  • FULL TEXT: NDC press conference on exhibition of 2020 voters register

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen from the media and welcome to this all-important Press Conference. Your presence here gives us comfort that we can count on you in raising critical issues that affect our country and our democracy in the supreme interest of the people of Ghana.

As you are aware, the Electoral Commission commenced an exhibition of the provisional voters register on 18th September 2020. Our observation of the exercise so far revealed grave anomalies that threaten the conduct of Peaceful, Free and Fair elections on December 7 this year. We, therefore, invited you here this morning to share our observations with you and the entirety of Ghanaians.

The NDC wishes to emphatically state that since the inception of the fourth republic we have not seen our otherwise respected EC present to the good people of Ghana such a malformed and anaemic register going into a major election. While we will present you with impeccable evidence on the serious anomalies on the provisional voters’ register, we also encourage you our friends in the media and all well-meaning Ghanaians to make time and visit exhibition centres to see for yourselves the mess that the Jean Mensa and Bossman Asare led EC has created.

LIMITED DURATION FOR THE EXHIBITION EXERCISE

Ladies and Gentlemen, the exhibition of the voters’ register is a critical aspect of our electoral process. It is through the exhibition exercise that citizens who register get the opportunity to confirm that their names and other details are duly captured on the voters roll such that they will not be disenfranchised on voting day.

In view of the importance of this exercise the duration for exhibition in the past was between 11 and 21 days. In 2012 when a new register was compiled, the duration for the exhibition exercise was 11 days (1st to 10th September, 2012). Even in 2016 where only limited registration was conducted in preparation for that year’s elections, the duration for the exhibition exercise was 21 good days (18th July to 7th August).

Unfortunately, with the 2020 registration exercise that was characterized by various anomalies, chaos and also involves close to 17 million prospective voters, the EC rather strangely announced an 8-day exhibition exercise. We wish to also place on record that unlike in the past where the EC called an IPAC meeting to discuss such an important activity for the inputs from political parties and other stakeholders, as characteristic of Jean Mensa’s autocratic and ‘yentie obiaa’ leadership style, the EC failed to do so.

    COPIES OF PROVISIONAL VOTERS REGISTER

Per regulation 22(2) of the Public Elections Regulations (Voters Registration) C.I.91 “At the end of the compilation of the provisional register as provided in sub-regulation (1), a copy of the provisional register shall be given to each registered political party in the form determined by the Commission.”

Whereas the NDC complied with the request of the EC and duly submitted a hard drive to the EC as early as 7th September 2020, it was not until Wednesday 16th September 2020 at around 8:10 pm, barely 35 hours to the commencement to the exhibition exercise that we received the provisional register for the EC. In a sudden twist of events, the EC called us the following day 17th September to return the register as they had detected some anomalies with the register for a new one. We graciously returned the register to the EC on the same day.

It was not until Friday 18th September at 8:46 pm that we finally got the register for the exhibition exercise. Take note, Ladies and Gentlemen, that the exhibition exercise commenced on Friday. This implies that we did not have the register for the exercise that day. What we political parties normally do is to receive the register in good time and print copies for all our agents to ensure that they monitor the exhibition process effectively.

We are reliably informed that the EC had already dispatched copies of the register they asked us to return to its officials across the country for the exhibition exercise. Given that it was too late to replace the Provisional Register with the current one, the EC knowingly and willfully instructed its officials to use the wrong copies of the register on the first day of the exhibition exercise.

Again, Regulation 23(3) of C.I. 91 states that “The Commission shall in addition to the publication provided in sub-regulation (1), post the provisional register on the website of the Commission”. It is important to note that our so-called competent EC is yet to fulfill this simple obligation imposed on them by the law they themselves drafted and sent to Parliament for enactment. Ladies and Gentlemen, you may check for yourselves now at www.ec.gov.gh to see if the EC has uploaded the register on the website as required by law.

Ladies and Gentlemen, even with the copies of the register the EC is using for the exhibition exercise so far, our observations show widespread anomalies at various exhibition centres across the country. So far our officials and agents have reported anomalies from all regions except Asawase in the Ashanti Region. This has already given us cause to believe that the anomalies and distortions in the register may be deliberate as it is widespread only in our strongholds. We have come to the conclusion that the current Provisional Register cannot be relied on as the Provisional Register as the level of distortion is incredible.

    ADJUDICATION & DE-DUPLICATION

The EC constituted an Adjudication Committee to look into issues regarding multiple registrations during the registration exercise. Ideally, this Committee is supposed to first complete its work before the exhibition exercise. The Committee last met on 27th August and scheduled to meet again on 3rd September but that meeting never came on. The Committee was supposed to complete its work before the provisional register could be finalized. It is therefore strange that the EC has gone ahead with the exhibition exercise. This therefore raises questions as to the register that is being exhibited.

Secondly, we also have information that people outside the shores of Ghana are being flown down to be registered on 29th September, 2020. How true is this assertion and will the people be part of the Provisional Register?

Ladies and Gentlemen of the media, before touching on some of the unpardonable issues that have come up so far at the various Exhibition Centres nationwide we wish to first draw your attention to something strange that happened at the EC’s district office in Ablekuma Central Constituency on Friday September 18, 2020. EC officials were caught on video late at night printing and laminating unspecified number of Voter ID Cards. Obviously, this is just one of the Modern Rigging Techniques the EC has employed going into this election. Our suspicion is that either the new ID cards were being printed for non-Ghanaians who are not legible to vote or persons who did not register at all. This confirms rumours that EC officials were still secretly registering people after the official registration exercise had ended. Once such cards are issued to people whose identities were not scrutinized, these persons will go to the exhibition centers and fill in the Inclusion Forms as if they were mistakenly taken out of the register. Obviously this is part of the grand plan between Jean Mensa and the failed NPP to subvert the sovereign will of Ghanaians on 7th December. But we are vigilant and under no circumstance shall we sit that for Jean Mensa to perpetrate such a treasonable act on Ghanaians.

We condemn this shameful act of thievery vehemently. We therefore call for an independent investigation of this incident and demand an explanation from the EC as to how any group could be permitted to print such numbers of voter ID cards when exhibition is ongoing.

We wish to use this opportunity to call on our officers and agents to ensure strict compliance with our earlier directive to compare the exhibition list with the daily print out obtained during the registration exercise and reject all new names that do not exist on the daily print outs.

Now to the charade exhibition of Jean Mensa /Bossman Asare voters register. From evidence gathered so far by our hardworking monitoring teams across the nation, the anomalies that have characterized the register can best be described as a comedy of errors that we predicted during the shambolic voter registration exercise. Never in our electoral history have we witnessed the display of such expensive incompetence by one of the most internationally revered institutions.

Key among the errors observed from the exercise include:

    1. outright omission or removal of registrants through duplication
    2. mismatch of Personal Identification Numbers
    3. multiple instances of same photograph on different ID Cards.

Below are details of the anomalies we have been able to capture to share with you.

SAME PIN NUMBER ISSUED TO MULTIPLE APPLICANTS

Under no circumstance should any database, be it biometric or otherwise have multiple people issued with the same Personal Identification Numbers (PIN). In other words, the uniqueness of a PIN must be guaranteed at all times in any credible database. We wish to state categorically that this was NOT the case in the previous register which the EC has thrown away. It is therefore sad that after spending almost 1 Billion Ghana Cedis to compile a new register, we have ended up with a register which does not guarantee the uniqueness of the PINs which is the most fundamental principle in a database design.

Indeed, the essence of Identity Management is to register, clean up the data and issue unique PINs to every single registrant. Having duplicated and triplicated PINs is akin to a bank issuing the same account number to multiple customers. That is how serious and fundamental a PIN is. It is therefore our position that the new voters register has failed a fundamental credibility test.

Ladies and Gentlemen from the media we present to you some location specific anomalies:

    1. Many exhibition centres in the districts do not have Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs). For instance out of 1078 polling stations in the whole of the Western North region, only 400 had BVDs. This means that the BVDs are not been used to verify people on the register in this exhibition exercise even though the EC budgeted for these devises and was supposed to procure them for use at every polling station.
    2. There are several instances of disparities between details of printouts obtained during registration and the information on the provisional register being exhibited.
    3. There were missing names, replication of names, swapping of photographs and differences in ID Numbers at virtually all centres visited. In Asunafo South Constituency in the Ahafo Region for instance, male photos on the register were used for female registrants and vice versa and names are missing from the register. Some of those successfully challenged still have their names on the register. In Asunafo North, one photograph was used for several people on the register
    4. At some centres the EC’s presence was useless. For instance the exercise was halted at the Zawse primary school polling station in the Binduri Constituency when the residents realized that only 14 names were captured out of 413 registered at the centre
    5. In the New Edubiase constituency there was a case where voters got to the centres to check their names and instead they were issued with new cards with new ID Numbers.
    6. Many Ghanaians have described the short code (1422) announced by the EC as a scam. This is because the information returned by the system usually belonged to a different registrant.
    7. In some other cases those who out of curiosity visited their exhibition centres after verifying with the short code were shocked to find out that their names were missing from the register although the system had verified them via the short code.
    8. Some exhibition centres either started early or did not work on the first day of exhibition. This has a potential of putting those who trooped there on the first day off. Strangely this happened mostly in the strong holds of the NDC. For example, at Nkwanta south in the Oti Region, all polling stations but the Nkwanta township centre were unable to commence on the first day.
    9. Still in the Oti Region, as at 12:30pm on the first day the EC Officials had not reported, leaving many registrants stranded. Similar incident was reported from other NDC strongholds.
    10. People who were successfully challenged during the registration and whose names were expected to be deleted still had their names on the provisional register.
    11. At the M/A Primary School, Mbradan Exhibition Centre, the picture of one registered voter had replaced the pictures of almost all the registered voters at that polling station.

Ladies and gentlemen of the media, these are only few instances time will allow us to mention. As stated supra a more comprehensive compilation would be available to relevant stakeholders in due course. Meanwhile the EC does not seem to disappoint when it comes to miraculously targeting the NDC strongholds to inflict their “errors” on them. Isn’t it curious that most of the Exhibition Centres affected with deletions were in the Zongos? What about the fact that in the Afram Plains South, the phenomenon was more pronounced on the Islands?

    SMS SHORT CODE VERIFICATION

We have also take note of the announcement by the EC on the use of a short code to confirm the existence of their names on the voters register. We note that the EC has failed to inform Ghanaians in its publicity that the use of the short code attract charges. Since the EC’s budget has already been approved. We wonder who the money will be going to since the EC is not bothered when it comes to issues of transparency.

From our observations so far, we have come to the conclusion that the use of the short code to verify the existence of their names on the register is not reliable. We therefore wish to caution our supporters and the electorate from relying on this method of confirming their details on the register. We wish to encourage everyone to find time and physically visit the exhibition centres to confirm their names to be sure that their names are on the register to accomplish the rescue mission come 7th December, 2020.

COMMENDATION TO CSOS AND WELL-MEANING GHANAIANS

We wish to use this opportunity to commend various civil society organisations and well-meaning Ghanaians who have been vigilant and critical of the electoral process so far that has helped to ensure that the EC does the right things for a credible, free and fair elections. We wish to encourage them to do more as the elections approach.

    MESSAGE TO EMINENT CITIZENS

In previous elections, the nation relied on well respected eminent Ghanaians to intervene through quiet diplomacy when there were tensions. We were therefore concerned that the very people the nation will rely on as moral voices were co-opted into a so-called Eminent Advisory Committee by the Electoral Commission. We had cause to caution our eminent personalities that were invited to be part of this committee. Having been coopted as part of the EC, we have come to the conclusion that the Jean Mensa led Electoral Commission acts on the advice of the Eminent Advisory Committee and therefore the Committee endorses all their actions and inactions. With this development, we wish to ask members of the Eminent Advisory Committee whether we should hold them responsible for the mess and the chaos the EC is causing?

To the rest of our moral voices religious leaders, statesmen and the media, there are a lot of things going wrong but unfortunately we don’t hear them comment on any of these things. There is a point in history that a country where the SILENCE of the responsible and Senior citizens in the society can no longer be golden.

But we wish to remind everyone that God is watching all of us and if by their silence this country is plunged into chaos, all of us will suffer. But it is not too late for concerned citizens to speak out and condemn acts that have the potential to undermine our democracy. Such continuous silence in the Face of such blatant disregard for common sense abuse of office and incompetence is tantamount to a betrayal of their hallowed positions in society and the entire populace.

    MESSAGE TO GHANAIANS

In a democracy, governments are changed or maintained through the ballot. The outcome of free fair and credible elections is the sovereign will of the people. Therefore any act that undermines this sacred exercise and denies people their free will is tantamount to treason. All Ghanaians must therefore rise up to protect their vote and resist any act that undermines their sovereign will.

    A CALL TO DUTY

We acknowledge that these are difficult times in our democratic dispensation but we should be reminded that we are also dealing with an EC that is hell bent on doing the bidding of the failed NPP government. As a result, they ignored wise counsel that the registration period was too short to compile a credible register. With this in mind, we urge all our members, supporters and sympathizers to ensure that their names are on the register for the rescue mission. They should therefore come out in their numbers to check their names in the provisional register at all the exhibition centers.

We know the exhibition exercises attract low turnout, sometimes in single digit percentage. However, we are not in normal times so we plead with all NDC sympathizers as well as all Ghanaians interested in upholding our constitution and democracy to endure all circumstances including possible long queues, potential intimidation and harsh weather in order to confirm their names on the register. This is how we would all guarantee victory on December 7, 2020 we can rescue our dear nation from this insensitive Akufo Addo’s government.

  • We’ll deal with you if you dont stop tearing our posters – NDC Zongo Coordinator

The Zongo Caucus Coordinator of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the New Juabeng South constituency of the Eastern Region, Tijani Ahmed Maikano has cautioned the Zongo youth against taking down NDC campaign posters in the area, adding that the youth are usually hired to perpetrate such acts.

According to him, to foster peace in the Zongo communities, the inhabitants must be careful with their involvement in politics.

In an interview with CTV’s Kamal Ahmed, Mr Maikano accused members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area of tearing down NDC posters.

He, therefore, called on opinion leaders in the Zongo community to call on the NPP in the area to desist from that act or face punishment.

  • Fish out killers of Legon law professor – NDC Communicator

Communication team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Eric Sosu has charged the police to do their best to bring the perpetrators of the murder of Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, a Senior Lecturer of the University of Ghana Law Faculty.

Describing the murder as wicked and evil, the NDC communicator commiserated with the family but charged the police to conduct a professional job in bringing the offenders to book.

The police have arrested four persons to assist in the investigation into the death of the lecturer.

The four, all workers at his residence, are Christian Pobee, 32, cleaner; Isaac Botchwey, 41, houseboy; James Nana Womba, 26, cleaner; and Adams Mensah Mansur, 52, gardener.

The body of the law lecturer was discovered in his residence on Saturday morning lying in a pool of blood, with his hands tied behind him and his body bearing cuts all over.

The crime scene investigations team from the Criminals Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has since launched investigations into the circumstances of his murder.

Reacting to this, Mr. Eric Sosu said the offenders had no right to kill the law professor and must be fished out from where ever they are hiding.

  • NDC’s performance is enviable; no need for unnecessary argument – Prof. Jane Naana

Running mate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has said that his party set an enviable record of performance while in government so they don’t have the time to challenge those with a different view.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang, the first female running mate of a major political party, stressed that there is no need for unnecessary argument over performance since it is obvious for people to see and assess.

“We have our enviable performance record which is clear to all Ghanaians. It is not a matter of engaging in unnecessary argument. Showcase what we have done and plan to do, and let those who have a different view also show theirs,” she said.

The NDC and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been campaigning feverishly for the forthcoming general elections in December.

Both parties have been engaged in a comparison of records in government, with the NPP claiming to have done more for the country in less years in government than the NDC.

But Prof Opoku Agyemang has noted that there is no need for arguments since both parties can simply show evidence for the work they have done.

  • Give us your mandate and hold us to strict accountability – NDC to Ghanaians

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked Ghanaians to return the party to power in the December 7 election and hold them to account over the promises they have made to transform lives.

Addressing party executives and supporters at its 2020 manifesto launch at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Monday, 7 August 2020, the National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said the governing New Patriotic Party is confused and exhausted.

In his view, if the NDC does not take over from the NPP, Ghanaians will be worse off in the next four years.

According to him, it is only the NDC that can move the country in the right direction.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said: “We the citizens of this noble country are now at a difficult juncture; we cannot sit any further than we have.

“We are at rock bottom, the incumbent is not only confused and exhausted, but President Akufo-Addo is also digging an even deeper hole from which if not stopped, we will all be buried alive.

She said former President John Dramani Mahama, was not contesting for the Presidency again for his personal interest, but to complete and continue all projects and policies that were abandoned.

The Vice-Presidential candidate revealed that six E- blocks were sent to the now Western North Region when she was Education Minister, but all and other NDC initiated projects were abandoned.

Professor poku Agyemang said this when she addressed a community durbar at Sefwi- -Asawinso in the Waiwso constituency as part of her tour of the Western North Region.

She indicated that NDC did not discriminate against anyone and the next administration would ensure peace, unity and protection for all regardless of their political affiliation, religion or ethnic background.

She therefore called on Ghanaians especially women to vote for the NDC, since that was the only party to have brought development projects to the area.

She stressed that for the former President to settle on her as the Vice-Presidential candidate showed the latter had faith and confidence in women.

Nana Annor Kwerekye, Chief of Sefwi-Essakrom, who spoke on behalf of the traditional authorities said Asawinso “remains the strong hold of the NDC” and appealed to Professor Nana Opoku-Agyemang to consider creating a new district for Asawinso if the party wins the December polls.

    Gratitude

Mr. Boateng expressed his gratitude to the delegates, as well as his contender for a decent and incident-free election despite the delay in organising the primary.

He challenged the supporters of the party to continue to remain united and work very hard to snatch the seat from the NPP at the December polls.

“My victory today is not for me alone but the entire NDC family in the constituency. We have to bury our differences and forge ahead in unity to win the seat from the NPP at this year’s general election,” he said.

According to him, the electorate were tired of NPP and he was hopeful that they would vote massively for him this time round.

“I will beat the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament for the area, Nana Adjei Boateng, because the electorate are tired of him and he has failed to improve the living conditions of the people in the constituency,” he added.

    Strong campaign

The NDC parliamentary candidate said the 2020 elections would be a contest of hard work and ideas, hence the rank and file of the party ought to be ready to campaign vigorously to bring the party back to power.

He urged the party members to personalise the campaign and make it a point to personally convince people to vote for the NDC.

“We must be ready to work hard, go out and sell the good news of the NDC and the policies of John Dramani Mahama to the electorate,” he said.

  • NDC man contests Zanetor Rawlings as an independent candidate

Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle Constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, may have her votes slashed in the 2020 general elections, as a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided to contest the race as an Independent candidate.

Alhaji Danjumah Alhassan as he’s known, says he is going to contest the sitting lawmaker in the impending elections because she has failed the people according to his assessment of her performance.

According to him, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings, cannot boast of any specific developmental initiative in the Klottey Korle Constituency, since she took over as a Member of Parliament in the Constituency.

Alhaji Danjumah Alhassan, said what even beats his imagination is the fact that the daughter of Ghana’s former President, Jerry John Rawlings is not an open Member of Parliament who is easily approached by the people, hence making the NDC unpopular in the constituency.

He noted that the MP, apart from being incompetent, since taking over the seat has never given out funds to the executives in the constituency to organize campaigns in order for the NDC to win power.

On the back of the many ills by Zanetor Rawlings, Alhaji Danjumah Alhassan believes he needs to go into the race as an Independent candidate to save the people of Klottey Korle or else they will be left behind in terms of development.

When asked if he’s not going contrary to the party’s constitution, he told Tema-based Green FM in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com that “I’ve served the NDC since 1992 but it has always been monkey dey work baboon dey chop so I don’t even care about the repercussions. I honestly don’t care what will happen. I’ve taken my decision and nothing is stopping me.”

  • Voters registration: NDC curses Tepa MCE for denying members from registering

The Municipal Chief Executive Officer for Ahafo Ano North, Hon. Martina Appiah-Nyantakyi has incurred the wrath of members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) after she was accused of masterminding the disqualification of thousands of supporters of their party from registering in the ongoing exercise.

Supporters of the party publicly invoked curses on the MCE, whom they said, clandestinely worked with the Electoral Commission to deny several of their supporters from registering.

Reports available indicate that hundreds of supporters of the biggest opposition party were not issued their registration cards after failing to prove their eligibility during a challenging process.

A heated argument ensued on Wednesday after the MCE reportedly refused to allow the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, from taking part in a meeting held by the EC Committee to adjudicate cases brought before it by interested parties.

After being disqualified in the process for failing to establish their eligibility as voters within the constituency, members of the opposition party reportedly resorted to curses, invoking powerful river deities to strike the MCE whom they accused of being the mastermind behind a scheme to disenfranchise members of the NDC in the Ahafo North Constituency.

According to information, a high powered delegation led by the NDC General Secretary thronged the constituency, ostensibly to bulldoze their way through, as the party launches bid to recapture the seat it lost to the NPP in the 2016 general elections.

They, however, met their match in the MCE who stood her grounds, insisting that the EC Committee be allowed to do their independent work without any interference.

However, the NDC leadership believes Hon. Martina used her position to influence the outcome of the challenging process, culminating in the disqualification of many potential registrants believed to be affiliated to the party.

  • There is no NPP or NDC government in Ghana – Kabila

General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh (Kabila) has called on the public to stop referring to the Akufo-Addo administration as an NPP government.

According to him, tagging the government with a political party name is unconstitutional.

He expounded that government is about the person who is elected to lead the State, in this case will be President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not the New Patriotic Party.

He said this while announcing that the CPP is poised to contest the 2020 elections and revealed the party will unveil its Presidential and Parliamentary candidates on Saturday, August 15.

“In fact, should President Nana Akufo-Addo decide today to exit the New Patriotic Party, he will continue to be President because as much as he was elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, he is President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. There’s no NPP government . . . There has never been an NDC government. In our constitutional arrangement, it’s not parties that form government but rather the person who has been elected,” James Kwabena Bomfeh said during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’.

He also described Ghana’s constitution as a constitution of hypocrisy.

To him, there are inconsistencies in the contitution.

He believed the inconsistency is one of the reasons why people tend to call a government by a political party name.

Speaking to host Nana Yaw Kesseh, he called for an overhaul of the 1992 constitution saying”the whole structure of the constitution and the politics we’re doing under this fouth Republican dispensation, I want to conclude that the case for a constitutional overhaul is eminent and it’s imperative”.

The regional office received some 36 new Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority-registered motorcycles and 18 Lenovo laptops on Friday, 24 July 2020 at the party’s regional office in Ho.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, Henry Ametefe, disbursed the donated items on the behalf of the former President to the leadership of the 18 constituencies.

Each constituency received two motorcycles and a laptop.

Mr Henry Ametefe asked the people to use the motorbikes to embark on a door-to-door campaign in their various areas, admonishing them to exercise caution so as to prevent accidents.

The party’s regional secretary, James Gunu told the media that the former President made the gesture to facilitate community campaign across the various constituencies since the COVID-19 pandemic had prevented political rallies from occurring.

“The motorbikes are supposed to facilitate the party work on the ground. That means that our people (campaigners) have to get closer to the doorsteps of the people. Because of the COVID-19, we are not going to have big rallies in the constituencies, definitely, we need to get our messages closer to the people at the grassroots,” he said.

He added that the laptops will also facilitate their campaign and election activities since information and technology are crucial in collating election results.

“We are in an information technology world, so we need to be abreast with the global trend, we need to be able to collate our results and we need to be able to get the information on the ground as far as the results collation is concerned,” he said.

Mr James Gunu said, winning the December polls is a must for the NDC hence the party will leave no stone unturned as far as measures to win are concerned.

“This is an election that we need to win. It is a must-win election, so everything that we need as party people to make sure that we win this election must be done,” he noted.

The party has also formed an information technology (IT) directorate in the region to work with the election committee and also to be in charge of the use of laptops.

Leadership of the Volta Region NDC thanked John Mahama and promised to ensure that the items are put to good use and geared towards achieving victory in the December polls.

  • Political intolerance: NPP, NDC are the same Gyampo

A six-month study, spanning January to June 2020, and involving some 315 respondents purposively sampled among supporters of both the NDC and NPP has shown that the supporters of both the NDC and NPP are all intolerant. A six-month study, spanning January to June 2020, and involving some 315 respondents purposively sampled among supporters of both the NDC and NPP has shown that the supporters of both the NDC and NPP are all intolerant.

The study, undertaken by Professor Ransford Gyampo of the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, was aimed at contributing to the survival of multiparty democracy through the institutionalization of Political Tolerance among political parties and their support base.

According to Prof Gyampo, when the NDC was in government, some of its young appointees and core supporters were described by Jerry Rawlings as “babies with sharp teeth” to depict the height of intolerance among them. Regrettably, Prof Gyampo noted that the support base of the ruling NPP are also guilty of same crime of political intolerance.

He added that his research show that the support base of the two parties are intolerant, not only when their Political Parties are in power, but even in opposition.

Professor Gyampo says he intends to publish the research paper as a journal article in a scholarly journal. But he had this to say in his concluding remarks, in a brief interview with our reporter:

“The sad reality is that, some NPP apparatchiks are intolerant. But some NDC apparatchiks are also not tolerant, even in opposition. Those seeking to maintain power, must know how to tame the arrogance of power and be tolerant of dissent. Those who seek power, must also know how to comport themselves, to show a clear difference between what is there, and the alternative.

“It is boring to continue to see the two main parties as the same, in terms of their respective abilities to be tolerant. Let there be difference, if any of them is to be taken seriously by discerning election king-makers”.

  • EC detected bloated figures themselves, not NDC Ashanti NPP

The Ashanti regional branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the Electoral Commission was forced to admit anomalies in voter registration figures in the Ashanti region after they complained of it.

According to the NPP, the assertion of the NDC is false as the EC itself had earlier informed the political parties of the challenged and what they were doing to resolve it.

“It is unfortunate and ridiculous when the NDC makes such allegations. When they talked about bloated figures it was the electoral commission that noticed the anomalies themselves and they discussed with the parties, and that was rectified,” Ashanti regional secretary of the NPP Sam Pyne told a news gathering in Kumasi Monday.

The Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed figures of registrants submitted to its headquarters from two districts in the Ashanti Region were over-computed.

“The NDC regional secretary Kwame Zu personally called me and l explained everything to him on phone so am surprise they continue to see it as a big case”.
