14-year-old boy detained together with his father after he ‘used dad’s gun to kill teenage girl’

State police in New Mexico have charged a man and his 14-year-old son after a 13-year-old girl was reportedly slain using her father’s guns.

On July 28, while four young people were enjoying some music at 104 Cabresto Road in Questa, a town in Taos County, one of the boys pointed a gun at the female.

The youngster fired the trigger, killing the woman, before ‘dragging the female’s body outside’ and returning to the property, according to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

The teenager’s father, William Brown, 39, allegedly entered the home afterward, and both he and the son allegedly refused to leave when police arrived.

    The 30-minute standoff was heated.

The child was eventually handcuffed by police and taken to Farmington’s San Juan Juvenile Detention Centre for booking.

The kid, who has not been named by officials, was accused of two charges of tampering with evidence and one open count of first-degree murder.

He is also charged with two charges of assault on a police officer, though the department gave no additional information.

The safety agency noted that Brown possessed the weapon and was charged with giving a youngster access to a firearm, which resulted in death.

The Taos County Detention Centre has received his booking.

According to the New Mexico State Police, out of respect for the victim’s family, her identity will not be disclosed.

The safety department announced that while the inquiry is ongoing, all information related to the matter would be given to the district attorney’s office.

John Anthony Ortega, the mayor of Questa Village, wrote on Facebook: “I am saddened by the tragedy that occurred yesterday.”

“My prayers and thoughts are with the families, neighbours, and First Responders who were impacted by it.”

  • A train passenger in Colorado looked out the window – and noticed a missing hiker

After spotting a missing, injured hiker through a train window, a Colorado train passenger assisted in her rescue.

According to a Facebook post from the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management, the passenger was riding Colorado’s Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad on October 10 when she noticed the hiker through the window and alerted the train conductor.

The hiker, a woman from New Mexico, went missing after she began a hike on the Colorado Trail, says the office. She left the trail and headed along the Animas riverbank, where she fell, breaking her leg. She spent two nights injured in the wilderness, according to the office.

After the second night, she managed to find a high-visibility spot on the riverbank – and flagged down the passing train.

Two train staff who were also trained medics crossed the river and stayed with the hiker until the Silverton Medical Rescue team arrived, according to the office.

The rescue operation was complex: the search and rescue team were flown in on a helicopter and used ropes to transport the injured hiker across the river. Then, a helicopter flew the patient to a nearby hospital. The search and rescue team was transported out of the riverbank area on a small train, according to the office.

“Another person in a moment of need was successfully brought home due to teamwork and collaboration,” wrote the office.

  • Albuquerque police hold suspect in murders of Muslim men

Police in the US city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, say they have arrested their “primary suspect” in the killings of four Muslim men.

Muhammad Syed, 51, was held on Monday and is charged with the murders of two of the men. Multiple firearms were recovered from his home, say police.

Police say they are working with investigators to charge the Afghan with the other two deaths.

The deaths took place over the past nine months.

The last three killings happened in the past two weeks.

Police chief Harold Medina announced the breakthrough on Tuesday, saying they had tracked down a vehicle believed to be involved and detained the driver.

Investigators say the attacks may have been motivated by personal conflict.

The suspect came to the US from Afghanistan “in the last several years”, police said.

Three of the victims were originally from Pakistan and attended the same mosque. Officers said they were “ambushed with no warning, fired on and killed”.

A fourth man, Mohammad Ahmadi, originally from Afghanistan, was killed last November.

Kyle Hartsock, deputy commander of the police criminal investigations division, said the suspect was arrested after his car was stopped and his home was simultaneously searched by a Swat team.

He said that a tip from the public had led to his arrest just two days after police distributed a photo of the suspect’s vehicle.

In a news release, police said during a search of Mr Syed’s home “detectives discovered evidence that shows the offender knew the victims to some extent and an interpersonal conflict may have led to the shootings”.

But in Tuesday’s press conference, law enforcement did not go into reports that the suspect was a Sunni Muslim who had targeted the victims because he was upset at his daughter marrying a Shia Muslim.

Mr Hartsock said: “We’re not really clear if that was the actual motive, if it was part of a motive, or if there’s a bigger picture that we’re missing.”

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said in a statement that he hopes the “swift action brings an increased sense of safety for so many who are experiencing fear from the recent shootings”.

On Monday, US President Joe Biden said he was “angered and saddened by the horrific killings”, adding that “these hateful attacks have no place in America”.

Police have not said the attacks were hate crimes.

The search for the suspect had steadily grown in size over recent days after New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said she was sending additional law enforcement officers to the city to aid investigators.

Several organisations had offered significant rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.

Ahmad Assed, a spokesman for the Islamic Center of New Mexico, told the BBC the killings have been horrific for the city’s Muslim community.
