Newcastle United’s CEO, Darren Eales to step down after cancer diagnosis

Newcastle United announced on Friday that CEO Darren Eales will be stepping down due to a diagnosis of chronic blood cancer.

Eales, 52, joined the Premier League club in July 2022 after previously holding the role of President and Chief Executive at Atlanta United, a Major League Soccer team he helped establish in 2014.

Under his leadership, Newcastle achieved notable milestones, including their first domestic cup final appearance in 24 years, though they were defeated by Manchester United in the 2023 League Cup final.

The club also made a successful return to the Champions League last season.

“Being CEO of Newcastle United is an extraordinary privilege, and I am incredibly proud to be part of the club’s exciting journey,” Eales said in a statement.

“However, it has become apparent to me that now is the right time to make this decision so that I can prioritise my health and my family.

“In the short term, it will be business as usual in terms of running the club’s day-to-day operations, and I will give my full support to a transitionary period that will enable the board to carefully assess and appoint my successor.

“I’m proud of what we have collectively achieved, and I’m excited to see what’s ahead for everyone as the club builds towards a future of sustained success.”

Eales will continue to lead the club’s executive team until a successor is appointed, Newcastle said.

  • Jordan Ayew assists in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle

Ghanaian international Jordan Ayew played a crucial role for Crystal Palace on Wednesday night in their 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the English Premier League.

The two teams clashed at Selhurst Park to resolve their outstanding Week 29 fixture of the league campaign.

Starting for Crystal Palace, Black Stars forward Jordan Ayew put on an impressive display throughout the game.

Following a goalless first half, Ayew provided an assist for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who opened the scoring for Crystal Palace in the 55th minute.

Later in the 88th minute, the French striker netted his second goal of the match, securing an important 2-0 win for Crystal Palace against Newcastle United.

  • Mauricio Pochettino discloses Chelsea problem that “upsets” him after losing to Manchester United

Mauricio Pochettino discloses Chelsea problem that “upsets” him after losing to Manchester United

Mauricio Pochettino is very unhappy with how Chelsea’s players have been unable to stop opponents from scoring with headers this season.

Chelsea is one of the shortest teams in the Premier League, and in their last four games, they have allowed goals from headers. In their game against Manchester United, Scott McTominay scored a header to win the game, towering over Levi Colwill.

Chelsea have let in six goals from headers this season, and only Luton, Brentford and Sheffield United have let in more.

The Blues are playing against Everton on Sunday. Sean Dyche’s team is the tallest in the league, and Pochettino sees this as a big problem for their game at Goodison Park.

“The Chelsea manager said it could be a problem. ”

We should try harder to stop the other team from getting chances to score, like when they get corners or free-kicks from the side. We have to be smart about how we work and try to stop them.

In football, it’s about how you play the game, your attitude, and being smart to prevent the other team from using their strengths.

Pochettino was very upset by McTominay’s goal on Wednesday night in Manchester.

He said we have to get better. Maybe I don’t look very emotional, but I am really upset. We need to improve a lot in these situations.

It is a combination of planning and wanting something. We should stop the crosses. If someone says “It’s not my problem because the other person did something wrong,” then it’s hard for the defense to handle those situations.

Everton won 3-0 against Newcastle United and moved out of the relegation zone, even though they had a 10-point penalty for breaking the league’s financial rules.

Chelsea is still in 10th place even though they lost to United for the sixth time this season.

  • Alan Shearer criticises Reece James after loss to Newcastle

Alan Shearer criticises Reece James after loss to Newcastle

Alan Shearer criticized Reece James, the captain of Chelsea, after they lost 4-1 to Newcastle United on Saturday.

James got kicked out of the game in the 73rd minute and had a hard time playing against Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon in the Premier League match at St James’ Park.

The England player has played in Chelsea’s last three games, but now they have to miss the next game because of a suspension.

After his old team Newcastle won against the Blues, Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Chelsea played really bad in the second half.

Newcastle made them look bad and put them under a lot of pressure.

“Kieran Trippier did a great job, but Reece James didn’t play as well. ” Anthony Gordon made things really hard for him and he got upset.

Gordon is having a great time in Newcastle. James got frustrated and was sent off.

At the same time, the Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino was very angry with how his team played. He will bring the players back for more practice on Sunday.

‘We played really badly in that game,’ Pochettino told Premier League Productions. “We didn’t start the game from the beginning. ” We didn’t play well, we didn’t try hard enough.

Even though we scored, when the score was 1-1, we had a chance to make Newcastle play defensively, but they found it easy to do so. That’s why I am very unhappy with how they did.

  • Stabbed Newcastle United fan in Milan now in stable condition

Stabbed Newcastle United fan in Milan now in stable condition

A 58-year-old Newcastle United supporter, who is a British national, is in stable condition at a hospital after being attacked by a group of hooded assailants in Milan on the eve of the team’s Champions League match against AC Milan, as reported by Italian police on Tuesday.

The attack occurred in the Navigli district of the city, a popular canalside area known for its nightlife. The fan suffered stab wounds to the arm and back, with the back injury being the more severe.

However, the victim is expected to be discharged from the Policlinco hospital within the next few hours, according to a police spokesperson.

The incident took place while the victim was with a friend, and it involved a group of seven or eight individuals wearing hoods and concealing their faces.

Newcastle United expressed their deep concern over the reports of the stabbing in a statement provided to the British media.

“We are liaising with local authorities to understand the circumstances. Our thoughts are with the supporter and their family and we hope for a full and speedy recovery,” the statement added.

Milan has not provided any comment on the matter.

Newcastle is set to confront Milan, the seven-time European Cup winners, in Group F at the San Siro later on Tuesday. This marks the English side’s return to Europe’s premier club competition after an absence of 20 years.

Group F deemed group of death in Champions League draw

The draw for the 2023-24 Champions League group stage has been announced, and it presents some intriguing matchups.

Defending champions Manchester City will face RB Leipzig once again, a team they convincingly defeated 8-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 last season.

Joining City in Group G are Crvena Zvezda and Young Boys, making it a relatively favorable draw for the Treble winners.

In contrast, Newcastle United has been handed a challenging group. They are set to take on football giants Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan in Group F.

Eddie Howe’s squad faces tough competition, but they can count on the passionate St James’ Park supporters to create a fortress atmosphere when some of Europe’s top clubs visit.

In other matchups, fans will witness Harry Kane‘s return to England as Bayern Munich squares off against Manchester United in Group A. The England captain will be eager to find the net against FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray as well.

Arsenal’s highly anticipated return to the Champions League promises to be thrilling in Group B. The Gunners will face stiff competition from Europa League champions Sevilla, PSV Eindhoven, and Ligue 1 side Lens.

Last season’s finalists, Inter Milan, have the task of overcoming Benfica in Group D, while Spanish giants Real Madrid will clash with Napoli in Group C.

Scottish champions Celtic face a challenging start to their campaign, locking horns with Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid, and Lazio. Meanwhile, LaLiga holders Barcelona must navigate their way past Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Antwerp in Group H.

  • Lewis Hall heads to Newcastle United on loan

Lewis Hall heads to Newcastle United on loan

Newcastle United have secured the services of defender Lewis Hall from Chelsea on a season-long loan. This arrangement includes an obligation for the Magpies to permanently sign him next summer, contingent on performance-related criteria.

A lifelong Newcastle United supporter, Lewis Hall becomes the fifth addition to St. James’ Park during this summer transfer window, and he will be wearing the number 20 shirt.

At just 18 years old, Hall is considered one of Chelsea’s most promising Academy graduates. He boasts 12 senior appearances for the Blues, which notably include starts in both Premier League encounters against Newcastle United last season.

In recognition of his achievements, he was named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season. It’s worth noting that this honor was also bestowed upon Tino Livramento just two years prior.

Lewis Hall received the award in a ceremony on the pitch at Stamford Bridge before a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in May.

Lewis said: “I’m very proud. Me and my family are Newcastle fans, and for me and my brother growing up, it was drilled into us that we were Newcastle. It’s a big club and I can’t wait to get started.

“I got a lot of experience last year in some big fixtures and I was really proud of the way I progressed as a player and a person. To now be here at Newcastle, the club that I’ve supported since I was a kid, I’m honoured and very proud to wear this shirt.

“It’s very exciting. When you look back on last season and the way the team performed – not just the results, but the performances the team were putting in – it was amazing.

“There’s so many talented players and we’ve got the Champions League now as well so there’s many different competitions that I know the team will be wanting to do well in, and hopefully get a trophy or two as well.”

Newcastle United head coach, Eddie Howe, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Lewis to Newcastle United.

“He is a player we have tracked closely, as have a number of clubs, so it’s very pleasing to secure him and to add a player of his quality, versatility and high potential to our squad.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved for their tireless work to bring in the players we have.

“A lot of time, effort and resource goes into a transfer window, but we have a real togetherness at all levels here and I appreciate that teamwork and support.”

  • Lewis Hall up for sale as Chelsea wants £30 million for Newcastle and Crystal Palace as target

Lewis Hall up for sale as Chelsea wants £30 million for Newcastle and Crystal Palace as target

Lewis Hall, a talented teenager who Chelsea is willing to sell this summer, is valued at £30 million.

In spite of the club’s strange and turbulent season, Hall earned his Premier League debut for the Blues last year and made nine appearances in the top division.

The 18-year-old, who has earned England Under-21 caps, is clearly liked at Stamford Bridge because he signed a new deal this summer that keeps him with the team through the year 2030.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea’s initial intention was to loan Hall out for this season, which is still a possibility, but they are also willing to sell him to a buyer.

The adolescent is reportedly a target for Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, but according to the source, if they want to buy him permanently, they would have to fork over £30 million.

Hall won’t be playing frequently this season under Mauricio Pochettino, but Chelsea is still open to loaning him out if they don’t get the kind of offer they’re looking for.

Academy-made goods This summer, Chelsea already lost Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Manchester United and AC Milan, respectively. Trevoh Chalobah and Callum Hudson-Odoi are set to follow them out of the club.

Selling indigenous talent is one method to recover some money after Chelsea’s massive spending over the past year, yet there is no assurance that their buying spree has ended for the summer just yet.

  • Saudi investigation can only be beneficial – Shearer

Saudi investigation can only be beneficial – Shearer

Alan Shearer, a former Newcastle United and England football player, has claimed that the more Saudi Arabia participates in sport, the more the government would come under scrutiny.

“That can only be a good thing,” he added, adding that more people were asking questions.

Shearer was replying to inquiries about objections to his charity taking a gift from the LIV golf league, which is supported by Saudi Arabia.

The response to any offer of money, he claimed, was “always a yes” during a crisis in the cost of living.

The Alan Shearer Foundation, a charity run by the Match of the Day pundit, offers activities, residential care, and respite care to persons with significant disabilities.

It has accepted a donation of $25,000 (£19,600) from LIV, and at its Asian Tour event at Close House near Newcastle, there will be fundraising activities as well.

Although the organisation offers its facilities free of charge, Shearer explained that this means money must be generated to meet operating expenses.

Therefore, he remarked, “Whenever anyone asks if they can be involved with it, then it’s always a yes because times are hard now.”

“We still need to find a way to raise the money.”

Shearer acknowledged worries about the source of the funding, but added that he understood them.

I believe it’s critical that we discuss and inquire about that, he remarked.

“We must accept that LIV and the Saudis are in because it is such a significant aspect of sport today.

“But I believe that more people are raising the issues as a result of their current involvement, and that can only be a good thing.

“It can only be better if people have to answer more questions,”

Because of Saudi Arabia‘s dismal human rights record, a Saudi-backed acquisition of Shearer’s former team, Newcastle United, in 2021 generated controversy.

Amnesty International demanded that the Premier League review the agreement earlier this year.

The organization’s CEO, Sacha Deshmukh, blasted the choice to stage two Saudi international games at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, labelling it yet another illustration of “how sportswashing works.”

  • Chelsea to consider moving for Harry Maguire

Chelsea to consider moving for Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire is reportedly interested in leaving Manchester United this summer, and Chelsea is considering making a deal for him.

The Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service are in effect, and this website is secured by reCAPTCHA.

After last season’s decline in importance under Erik ten Hag, Maguire was determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford.

Before the start of the upcoming Premier League season, Ten Hag has nonetheless removed Maguire from his position as United’s captain.

According to The Sun, Maguire is ‘angry, shocked and upset’ following his meeting with Ten Hag on Sunday in which he told the 30-year-old that he was no longer United captain.

The report claims that Maguire is ready to leave United this summer and Chelsea are among the clubs interested alongside West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle United.

In a statement released on Sunday, Maguire said: ‘After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.

‘So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.

‘Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field.

‘I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support.’

Bruno Fernandes, who captained United on several occasions in Maguire’s absence last term, is favourite to take the armband on a permanent basis.

  • Erik ten Hag explains Varane and Martinez’s substitution in Newcastle defeat

Erik ten Hag explains Varane and Martinez’s substitution in Newcastle defeat

The two teams met for the first time since Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 26.

Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scored in that game.

Using goals from ex-Arsenal player Joe Willock and striker Calum Wilson to defeat the Red Devils 2-0 at St. James Park, Newcastle exacted their retaliation.

The victory put Newcastle ahead of United, who now have a goal advantage despite being tied on points.

If Tottenham defeats Everton later today, the Red Devils could drop out of the top four.

Ten Hag had a blip of his own.

In the 83rd minute, with the scores still at 1-0, he subbed off centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, a decision termed bizarre by the Manchester Evening News.

    Ten Hag explains defender subs

The Dutch manager’s decision came under scrutiny and Argentine defender, Martinez reacted angrily to the decision by smacking a chair in the dugout, as observed by Sun UK.

The decision did not pay off as Newcastle doubled their lead five minutes later through Wilson.

Ten Hag explained the decision after the game, as quoted by Metro UK: ‘‘We were not happy.

We played too high in midfield and it was easy for their two centre-halves to go and attack.

We had to play a little bit deeper. Therefore we made the sub. Then we made changes to bring more energy,’’ he said.

Newcastle United honour Christian Atsu again, feature him on magazine cover

On Sunday, March 12, 2023, before playing Wolves in Premier League week 27, Newcastle United paid another homage to the late Christian Atsu.

The magazine for their gameday programme featured Atsu on the cover. An article about the former Black Stars player was published in the magazine.

In the heartfelt article, the club praised Atsu’s humility and his generosity of spirit.

“There wasn’t a day went by that he didn’t say ‘good morning ‘ or ‘goodbye’,” part of the article read.

Atsu spent the most time in a club at Newcastle, where he played for four seasons at the St. James Park.

He had a special connection with the fans who composed a chant for the Ghanaian to appreciate his talent and dedication.

Christian Atsu passed away n February 2023 after he was trapped to death in rubble following an earthquake in Turkey.

  • ‘Why spend billions’? Here’s why Newcastle’s owners’ lost interest in Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham

‘Why spend billions’? Here’s why Newcastle’s owners’ lost interest in Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham

The owners of Newcastle United chose to invest in the Magpies over clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham because it was less expensive, according to director Amanda Staveley.

In October 2021, Staveley’s consortium bought Newcastle for about £300 million, along with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia. She stated that one of the main reasons for doing so was so more money would be left over to invest in the club than if they had chosen a more expensive alternative.

Staveley mentioned the fans in his speech at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit as another factor in his decision to purchase the team.

“I think if we look specifically at Newcastle, we were very clear that prior to buying the club, we wanted a club with a very passionate fanbase,” she said. “But we also wanted a club that we could buy affordably, because we’re also partners with PIF and they are, effectively, a pension fund, managing money for future generations.

“So we wanted something that was very sustainable, and that we could build. We didn’t go for the wonderful Tottenham and Chelsea and Liverpool and obviously, everybody knows I was a massive Liverpool fan.

“We tried to buy Liverpool, and when we walked into the Newcastle game, we said ‘why spend x billion when you can actually spend 300 and some million and put in?’ I think we’ve put in £200+ [million] to date of new money since we bought the club. We had a particular business plan based on a five, 10, 15-year timeline.

“Critical to that plan was making sure we had the right partners…PIF are very long-term investors.”

Staveley also explained why it is unlikely that the PIF would also look to invest in another Premier League club, despite previous links to Manchester United.

“Mehrdad [Ghodoussi, co-owner and Staveley’s husband] and I are not wealthy,” she said.

“Jamie [Reuben, co-owner] obviously is an extraordinarily wealthy gentleman, we’re the poor partner, but that helps govern a lot of the decisions – so there’s no scenario where Saudi Arabia will decide to sell Newcastle to buy one of the mega clubs like Manchester United.”

Staveley spoke about the challenges since arriving at St. James’ Park, including in player recruitment where the owners are mindful about what head coach Eddie Howe wants for his team.

“If I did it all again. I think we should have probably brought in more people more quickly,” she said. “Players or staff… the players we had to be just very careful and analytical on everything we did and we still do that.

“Because we have an FFP budget we keep to… that guided a lot of our transfer policy but we couldn’t afford to have a dud player. And so we had to make sure that we built at the back so that we [could] start to play the football that Eddie wants to play, this fantastic pressing football that we love and exciting attacking football.

“But to do that we needed to make sure that we could really strengthen because we had, I think, the weakest defence in the whole league, and now we have one of the strongest. And that was really important.

“So we always want more players. But the problem is, especially when you’re running a football club, you don’t really want to lose the players that you’ve worked with, and Eddie’s the same, and so it’s really difficult. So we’ve got to do that.”

  • Rashford’s EFL Cup winning goal gains official recognition

Rashford’s EFL Cup winning goal gains official recognition

The second goal in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final on Sunday has been officially attributed to forward Marcus Rashford.

The goal was credited as an own goal by Sven Botman at the time. It was scored six minutes after Casemiro had opened the scoring at Wembley.

Rashford’s shot was deflected by Newcastle’s Botman and looped over Loris Karius.

Rashford was the actual goal scorer, though, as United and the competition’s organisers both confirmed on Monday.

That means the in-form England international finishes as the 2022-23 EFL Cup’s top scorer with six goals, having found the net in every round United played in.

He now has 25 goals in 38 games for United this season – only Kylian Mbappe (29) and Erling Haaland (33) have scored more among players from Europe’s top five leagues.

Rashford’s latest strike helped propel United to their first trophy under Erik ten Hag and their first of any sort since 2017 when they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

  • Howe wants Newcastle to get used to competing for trophies

Howe wants Newcastle to get used to competing for trophies

Before Sunday’s EFL Cup championship match against Manchester United, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe wants his players to become accustomed to competing for trophies in championship games.

The Magpies haven’t participated in a domestic championship game in 24 years, and they haven’t claimed a significant victory since winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.

Since the ownership changed in October 2021, which allowed for increased spending on the team, expectations have grown around Newcastle. The team is currently competing for a Champions League spot, sitting fifth in the Premier League.

Since Howe’s appointment in November 2021, the Magpies improved from relegation battlers to finishing 11th in the 2021-22 campaign, with their 2022-23 league position and cup final appearance seen as another step forward which the boss wants to become the norm.

“We want the players to become accustomed to these days and expect them, not look at this final as a one-off and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Howe told reporters.

“In our position, that wouldn’t be a healthy way to look at this game. We want to be very controlled in our emotions, use the energy of the crowd, but also have high expectations.

“This is the future we all want and we know only hard work and staying true to our principles will earn us the right to achieve it. We hope this is the start of an era where we compete for honours on a more regular basis.”

Howe was hopeful his side could use the final as a springboard to bigger and better things but insisted that defeat would not be devastating for the club.

“Winning would help us accelerate the process, for sure, but it isn’t the be-all and end-all for what lies ahead,” he said.

“Regardless, the club is in a good place and can grow from here. Of course, we want to put pressure on ourselves to achieve. There is no part of me that’s going to Wembley just to enjoy the day.”

  • Karius awaits EFL Cup final ‘very relaxed and excited’ – Howe

Karius awaits EFL Cup final ‘very relaxed and excited’ – Howe

Before making an unexpected debut for Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final, Eddie Howe has no doubt that Loris Karius is in a positive frame of mind.

Karius will make his Newcastle debut against Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday thanks to an unlikely chain of events.

Nick Pope, the team’s starting keeper, was dismissed against Liverpool last weekend, and Martin Dubravka, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Man United, is currently cup-tied. He won’t receive a medal unless his teammates from Newcastle do.

The fourth- and fifth-choice goalies, Karius and Mark Gillespie, will be in the spotlight because Karl Darlow, who began Newcastle’s cup campaign in goal, was also permitted to go on loan.

It is Newcastle’s first major cup final since the 1999 FA Cup final, a loss to Man United, but Karius has rather more recent and similarly painful memories of such an occasion.

He was at fault for two goals as Liverpool lost the 2018 Champions League final to Real Madrid, despite having suffered a concussion. He never played for Liverpool again.

But Newcastle head coach Howe said of that match: “I’ve never really discussed that at any length with him [Karius].

“We’ve all got stuff that’s happened in our careers and our histories that you learn from, and I think he’s no different in that respect.”

“Since day one since he’s come here – he started where he hadn’t had a lot of work before joining us – he’s trained with our goalkeeper coaches in a really, really good way.

“His general performances in training have improved as he’s spent more time with us, and I think he’s in a good place and he’s ready to play.”

Asked how talks had gone with Karius since his sudden promotion, Howe added: “Those conversations are the type of conversations I have with him on a regular basis.

“How is he? How does he feel his training’s going? Are we giving him everything he needs to be the best that he can be?

“He’s a very likeable, laidback character. I’ve got no doubts on his confidence levels. He seems very relaxed and excited – as Mark is – about what lies ahead.”

Pope has kept the most clean sheets in both the Premier League (12) and EFL Cup (four) this season, but Howe himself is also still confident.

“I think we have to be very positive about our situation, about the game,” he said. “Yes, it’s a blow to lose Nick, but we still believe in the team and the group that we have.”

  • We hope for a good news – Newcastle Coach Eddie Howe on Christian Atsu

We hope for a good news – Newcastle Coach Eddie Howe on Christian Atsu

Newcastle United coach, Eddie Howe says he is hoping Christian Atsu will be rescued soon.

The Ghana international’s whereabouts is yet to be known after he was trapped in rubble since Monday.

Reports emerged that he has been found on Tuesday but the reportage was wrong.

However, Howe says he hopes the former Newcastle United winger is found soon.

“We hope for some good news, we hope he’s OK, but we’re really concerned for him and his welfare this week. It’s been difficult because there have been conflicting stories coming out about his whereabouts, so it’s been very tough. I can’t imagine how his family are feeling,” Howe said in an interview ahead of Newcastle’s league game against AFC Bournemouth

“But from the bottom of our hearts, we wish him well and hope there’s a positive ending” he added.

The 31-year-old scored a 97th-minute winner for Hatayspor in a 1-0 win Turkish Super League win over Kasimpasa this past weekend.

Atsu was on the books of Newcastle for five seasons including a one-year loan spell before joining Saudi Arabia side Al-Raed.

  • Wood leaves Newcastle for Forest loan ahead of £15m transfer

Wood leaves Newcastle for Forest loan ahead of £15m transfer

Chris Wood, a striker for Newcastle United, has signed a loan agreement with Nottingham Forest that will turn into a permanent one at the end of the current season.

Wood didn’t join Newcastle until January 2022, moving for £25 million from then-relegation rivals Burnley.

Burnley were ultimately relegated, but Eddie Howe helped Newcastle easily stay up, and a year later, they are still very much in the running for Champions League qualifying.

But whereas Wood started 15 of his 17 Premier League games for the Magpies the previous season, he has only made four starts in his 18 appearances this year, totaling just 437 minutes.

The New Zealand international had scored just four goals in 35 games, placing him behind the recovered Callum Wilson and the club-record signing Alexander Isak.

Instead, he will spend at least the rest of the current campaign with Forest, who hired Wood after learning of Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury in an effort to maintain their Premier League status for the upcoming year.

The agreement contains “a conditional obligation to become a permanent deal”, Forest confirmed, with reports suggesting the achievable criteria of those conditions will lead to a £15m move.

Wood was no longer a starter at St James’ Park, but only Jacob Murphy (36) had made more Premier League appearances for Newcastle since his arrival from Burnley, and Howe wants a replacement for the 31-year-old forward.

Ahead of the transfer on Friday, Howe said: “Hopefully, we’re planning to replace him.

“Certainly, from my side, there was no thought of letting a player go and not replacing [them]. I think that would leave us dangerously short of players.”

Howe acknowledged the club were now in a “difficult situation” in the transfer market but recognised Wood’s departure represented “a very good deal financially”.

  • Newcastle extend Karius deal until end of season

Newcastle extend Karius deal until end of season

Newcastle United have extended Loris Karius’ contract until the end of the season.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper joined on a short-term contract in September following an injury to back-up Karl Darlow.

Martin Dubravka’s return from a brief loan at Manchester United might have suggested Karius would depart again upon the conclusion of his initial deal.

But Newcastle announced on Thursday that the German – who is yet to make a competitive appearance – will be kept around until June.

The news comes after speculation began linking Darlow with several Championship clubs.

  • Newcastle United interested RC Lens defender Kevin Danso

Newcastle United interested RC Lens defender Kevin Danso

According to Get French Football News and the Wiener Kronen newspaper Premier League side Newcastle United is interested in RC Lens Austrian-born Ghanaian central defender Kevin Danso.

Kevin Danso, who played for FC Augsburg in the German Bundesliga and FC Southampton in the Premier League, is still under contract with Lensois until June 30, 2026.

Newcastle United is reportedly willing to invest 36 million euros for Danso, according to the Kronen newspaper. That would give the defender, who started every game for Lens in Ligue 1, two records.

Kevin Danso would be the most expensive sale from RC Lens. Cheick Doucouré of Mali is the most expensive departure for the 1998 French champions, having cost Crystal Palace €22.6 million in 2022.

If the deal goes through, Kevin Danso will be the most expensive Austrian footballer of all time. Marko Arnautovic is currently the most expensive Austrian. His move from West Ham United to Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League in 2019 cost 25 million euros.

  • Newcastle suffer more FA Cup third-round misery

Newcastle suffer more FA Cup third-round misery

After third-tier Sheffield Wednesday shocked the high-flying Newcastle United in the FA Cup, Eddie Howe called the latest defeat “a great disappointment.”

After significant improvements at St. James’ Park, head coach Howe had guided Newcastle into the Champions League spots, but Hillsborough put the Magpies off their game.

Josh Windass scored twice to give Wednesday a two-goal lead. Despite Bruno Guimaraes of Brazil bringing the score back to one, the Owls held on to win 2-1.

As a result, Wednesday becomes the first side to defeat Newcastle since Liverpool did so on August 31. This marks Newcastle’s third consecutive FA Cup failure.

Newcastle lost to Arsenal in this round of the cup in 2021 before suffering a huge killing when they tripped up at home against Cambridge United the previous year.

Howe mentioned in passing that he intended to make up for the Cambridge loss and questioned his players’ finishing, saying they had 22 shots to Wednesday’s nine but failed to convert any of them.

Howe told NUFC TV: “It was a tough night for us, a really difficult game. We knew it was going to be. We created enough chances to win. I thought we had some really presentable moments. We didn’t take them.

“Once they got their noses in front, it’s very difficult to come back. We tried our best to do that and right to the end we were pushing, but it wasn’t to be.”

Howe gave League One outfit Wednesday “a lot of credit” for pulling off the upset, with the lack of precision finishing from Newcastle, who sit third in the Premier League, proving costly.

“Bruno scored, and we had numerous chances and players in positions where you’d expect them to do better, just with their quality,” Howe said. “But it was a night where their goalkeeper made a number of great saves, and we missed that clinical edge that we normally have.

“It hurts because it’s a cup competition, and we’re out at the first round – a huge disappointment for us; especially after last year it’s doubly painful.

“The intention of the lads and myself and the coaching team was to come here and win. We haven’t experienced losing for a long time, and sometimes that can be a positive thing on reflection, but at the moment it’s too raw to feel that way.”

Newcastle still have a second chance of cup silverware, with an EFL Cup quarter-final home tie against Leicester City coming up on Tuesday.

“We’re determined to try and put it right on Tuesday,” Howe said.

  • Manchester United issued fine for Newcastle and Chelsea incidents

Manchester United have been fined £82,000 over two separate FA charges from their Premier League games with Newcastle United and Chelsea last month.

The club faced claims they had failed to control their players surrounding flashpoint incidents in both matches, crowding match officials after a disallowed goal against the Magpies and for a penalty concession against the Blues.

Now, having admitted to both charges, United have seen punishments handed out by the FA, with a heavy combined financial sanction for their troubles.

“Manchester United has been fined £82,000 in total for breaching FA Rule E20.1 during its Premier League matches against Newcastle United on Sunday 16 October and Chelsea on Saturday 22 October,” read a statement.

“Manchester United admitted that it failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 49th minute of the Newcastle United game and the 84th minute of the Chelsea fixture.

“Independent Regulatory Commissions imposed fines of £45,000 and £37,000 for the respective breaches in the Newcastle United and Chelsea matches during separate hearings.

“The Independent Regulatory Commissions’ written reasons for these individual sanctions will be published in due course.”

United’s fine is among the latest high-profile penalties handed out by the FA for disciplinary action this season, with several other managers and clubs facing similar sanctions.

Jurgen Klopp was fined £30,000 for his actions during Liverpool’s win over Manchester City, though the FA have since appealed the original fine.

Arsenal were also hit with a £20,000 penalty for failing to control their players during October’s match against Leeds United.

  • Isak injury ‘longer-term’ but Howe hopeful of return before Boxing Day

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is hopeful record-signing Alexander Isak will be fit for when the Premier League resumes after the World Cup despite his injury being “longer-term” than first thought.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a deal potentially worth a reported £64.8million (€75m) in August, smashing the club’s previous transfer record of just under £40m (€46.3m) for Joelinton.

Newcastle had been linked with numerous strikers throughout pre-season as they looked to build on Howe’s positive start at St James’ Park last season, although the newly minted club had been put off by valuations they felt were trying to take advantage of their new-found Saudi wealth.

With the season already a few weeks old, Newcastle eventually stumped up the cash for Isak, and he made a positive start with two goals in three games, but the 23-year-old suffered a thigh injury on international duty with Sweden in late September and has not played since.

Isak had already been ruled out until after the World Cup, and although Howe revealed on Friday the injury is more severe than initially thought, Newcastle expect him to be back in training in December when the club have a mini pre-season to prepare for the Premier League’s Boxing Day return.

“Alex has been having a couple of injections into his thigh,” Howe told reporters ahead of Saturday’s visit of Aston Villa. “I believe that’s gone well, and the medical team are happy where he currently stands.

“But it is a longer-term injury, a five- or six-week injury. As I’ve said before, he won’t be back before the World Cup break.

“We’re hopeful, as we begin our second pre-season, he is ready to train.”

Newcastle’s last pre-World Cup game is on November 12 at home to Chelsea, and they return to action just over six weeks later on December 26, away to Leicester City.

The club have already confirmed plans to visit Saudi Arabia for a training camp, as they did in January.

That trip will include a friendly against Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal, scheduled for December 8.

  • Guimaraes toasts ‘amazing days’ as midfielder dazzles in win at Spurs

New dad Bruno Guimaraes put two sleepless nights behind him to help Newcastle United to a 2-1 victory at Tottenham, saying the soaring Magpies “make me happy and proud”.

The Brazilian playmaker shone in north London where goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron put Newcastle into a 2-0 interval lead, with Harry Kane then trimming that advantage in the second half.

Only Kieran Trippier played more passes and had more touches among the visiting players than Guimaraes, whose first full season at Newcastle is starting strongly, with the Magpies climbing to fourth in the Premier League.

Guimaraes lasted until the 89th minute when Jonjo Shelvey came on in his place, having played a key role in the Newcastle effort.

Having announced the birth of son Matteo on Friday night, Guimaraes insisted on playing for Newcastle less than 48 hours later.

He told Sky Sports: “They’ve been amazing days for me, to become a father for the first time. It’s been incredible. I’ve had two days without sleep. I would stay home, but I love to be here with these guys. They make me happy and proud, and I think we deserved it today.”

Speaking about what fatherhood meant to him, he added: “It was one of the best days of my life. I’m very happy and proud. It’s been like a dream. I don’t have words because it’s amazing what has happened in my life.

“I say thanks to my family. It’s been difficult, but it’s all worth it.”

Newcastle, under head coach Eddie Howe and their Saudi ownership, are upwardly mobile in the English game for the first time in a long time.

That is exemplified by the fact just three players have featured for 700-plus minutes in this season’s Premier League and not been on the losing side when featuring in a game: Newcastle’s Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Fabian Schar.

Newcastle have lost just once in 12 games, going down 2-1 at Liverpool in late August. Botman and Schar were unused substitutes that day and Guimaraes was not involved.

  • Eddie Howe defends Newcastle United’s training camp in Saudi Arabia

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has defended the club’s decision to return to Saudi Arabia for a warm-weather training camp, saying it was made from a “purely footballing backdrop”.

The Magpies will travel to Riyadh from 4-10 December during the Premier League’s break for the World Cup, and will play Al-Hilal in a friendly.

A Saudi-backed takeover of the club was completed in October 2021.

The club previously travelled to Saudi Arabia in January.

“We’ve made a football decision. We’ve looked at the World Cup break, what’s the best thing for the team,” said Howe.

“The best thing for the team, I believe, is to take the team away like you would in pre-season, away from distractions, a chance to really train the group, enhance the team spirit with hopefully some good weather, so that’s what we’ve done.

“We’ve made it from a purely footballing backdrop.”

Newcastle’s ownership model has been controversial since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) took over at the club last year, with human rights groups saying the move is an attempt to ‘sportswash’ the country’s image.

Upon taking an 80% stake in the club, Newcastle’s owners had to provide “legally-binding assurances” to the Premier League that the state would not control the club despite Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also being the chair of PIF.

In the summer, a pre-season friendly with Mainz went ahead despite fans of the Bundesliga club protesting that Newcastle was a “vehicle for asserting the interests of a regime that tramples on human rights”.

After their trip to Saudi Arabia at the start of the year, Newcastle won five of their next six matches and the club hope the upcoming trip will have a similar effect.

“When you look back to last year, our decision to go there and the benefit it had for the team and the results on our return were really good, so we got a few positive connotations from that,” added Howe.

“Going back to our trip last year, the weather was very good, the facilities were first class, we were able to spend some quality time together to bond the group and really focus our energies on our battle to stay in the division.

“The team spirit off the back of that trip was very, very good. Obviously we have that positive experience to fall back on and it’s helped with our decision this time.”

  • Southgate should take Toney to the World Cup, says Brentford boss Frank

England manager Gareth Southgate should take Ivan Toney to the World Cup, so says “biased” Brentford head coach Thomas Frank.

Toney has enjoyed a fine start to the season for Brentford, scoring five goals across eight Premier League appearances.

Indeed, since the start of last term, only five players have scored more goals in the competition than Toney (17), with Harry Kane (24) the sole English player to have netted more.

As well as being involved in seven of Brentford’s 15 Premier League goals this season, Toney has had more shots (23) and created more chances from open play (10) than any other player for the Bees.

After scoring a hat-trick in a 5-2 rout of Leeds United on September 3, Toney received his first England call-up for last month’s Nations League matches against Italy and Germany.

While he did not make an appearance in either game, Frank believes he must be an option for Southgate in Qatar.

Ahead of Brentford’s trip to Toney’s former club Newcastle United, Frank said in a press conference: “I think for Ivan the most important thing is to perform every day at the training ground and then perform on Saturday against Newcastle, hopefully score a goal or two.

“Keep doing that and with his performances he needs to ask questions to Gareth Southgate.

“It is up to Gareth to take the decision over what he thinks is the best squad for the World Cup. I am sure he will take the best squad.

“Gareth wants to win the World Cup so he will bring the best and most competitive squad.

“If you ask me, I see Ivan every day and I am biassed but I think he should be there.”

Brentford’s trip to St James’ Park comes a day after the one-year anniversary of the controversial Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle.

At the time, the Magpies were languishing in the relegation zone under former boss Steve Bruce. Since then, Newcastle have taken 57 points in the top flight, with only the so called “big six” teams – Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham – winning more games (15).

For Frank, it would be a miraculous if Brentford manage to compete with Newcastle’s financial strength over the coming seasons.

“If we have the money we have now, they have their money and we continue doing that, if we are the same level at the same time, it will be an even bigger miracle than it is now that we are competing,” Frank said.

“Of course we know in football money talks. It is a very important part and that is one thing but the very good news is it is not only about money.

“Newcastle want to challenge that and there is no doubt they are aiming to be top six so maybe we need to start to talk about a top seven in the future.

“Put that aside, us being a bottom two budget club in the league, it is remarkable what we are doing.”

  • Newcastle land teenage Socceroos sensation Kuol

Newcastle United have won the race for the signature of exciting 18-year-old Australian forward Garang Kuol.

Kuol, who debuted for the Socceroos in Sunday’s 2-0 win over New Zealand, reached an agreement with the Magpies to join the Premier League outfit from A-League club Central Coast in January.

The Egypt-born forward scored five goals in 12 games in all competitions last season after bursting on to the scene with the Mariners.

Kuol dazzled in May’s A-League All-Stars game against Barcelona, reportedly sparking interest from several top clubs, including the Blaugrana and Chelsea.

Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth said: “Garang is a very promising young talent and we are excited that he’ll be continuing his development as a Newcastle United player.

“Our philosophy is to invest in our Academy and in exciting young players for the future, as well as in players required to make an immediate impact in the first team.”

Kuol is in the mix for Australia’s World Cup squad, with the Socceroos grouped with France, Tunisia and Denmark.

  • Newcastle United sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad

Sweden striker Alexander Isak joins Newcastle after his side, Real Sociedad, reached a long-term deal with the former.

Per reports, the deal is worth £60m.

Earlier, Newcastle head coach, Eddie Howe, revealed that the club are closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak.

“It’s not completed. We hope to get it done. Yes, fingers crossed. There’s no guarantee with these things because we’re in other people’s hands, but hopefully.” he said,

The 22-year-old becomes the Magpies’ fourth signing of the summer after Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman.

Alexander Isak is excited about the move. He noted that Newcastle plays good football, thus wants to be a part of the club.

“It was a big, big decision for me but it is a decision I am really happy with,” he said.

“It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here – and also the club’s project, which is one that I really believe in.

“You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that.”

Isak scored 44 goals in 132 appearances for Sociedad, and has nine in 37 caps for his country.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund player Isak’s arrival at St James’ Park boosts Newcastle’s attacking options given the injury record of Callum Wilson, who is currently out with a hamstring strain.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “I’m very excited that Alexander has chosen to join us. He is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team.

“He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us, but he is also at a great age to grow with this club.

“I want to thank the club’s owners and transfer committee for bringing Alexander to Newcastle. We are all delighted to have him on board.”

Earlier on Friday, Howe said Wilson’s hamstring injury was “not serious” but the 30-year-old striker will be out “for a couple of weeks”.

Howe also said he did not think Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was in talks with Manchester United over a move.

Reports have linked the Slovakian with a move to Old Trafford after he was displaced as club number one by Nick Pope.

“I don’t think he’s in talks with Manchester United,” said Howe. “There has been contact between the clubs, but that will be something that will continue probably, to happen, as in the discussions.

“But in terms of an actual final outcome, I’m very reluctant to lose any important players to the group, so that’s a decision that will be out of my hands.”

  • Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak from Sociedad in £60m deal

Newcastle United are in the pipeline of signing Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.

The two clubs are looking at fee of about £60m.

Isak’s signing would double Newcastle’s spending this summer to just short of £120m after already signing Matt Targett, Sven Botman and Nick Pope, and bring the total to around £200m since the new owners took over the club in October 2021.

The Sweden international, 22, would boost the Magpies’ attacking options given the injury record of Callum Wilson, who is awaiting results of a hamstring scan.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund player Isak has 44 goals in 132 appearances for Sociedad, and nine in 37 for his country.

Newcastle’s transfer record is the £40m they paid for Joelinton in 2019.

The Brazilian striker-turned-midfielder was signed from German club Hoffenheim.

The club also paid £35m plus add-ons for fellow Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes last January but Isak’s signing would be a significant shift from Newcastle’s new owners, who took over the club in October and have taken a considered approach to the transfer market.

  • Lampard insists Gordon is ‘our player’ amid Chelsea interest

Everton manager Frank Lampard has stated that nothing has changed on the future of Anthony Gordon amid strong links of a move away from Goodison Park.

It has been reported that Chelsea could be ready to pay up to £60million to take the 21-year-old to Stamford Bridge, while Tottenham and Newcastle United have also apparently been interested.

After the departure of last season’s top goalscorer Richarlison to Spurs and the injury to striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it has fallen on Gordon to lead the line at the start of this campaign.

Gordon started on the bench for Everton’s EFL cup game with Fleetwood Town on Tuesday and Lampard opted not to bring him in on in the 1-0 victory, amid rumours that Chelsea are preparing a new bid having reportedly already seen multiple offers exceeding £40m rejected by Everton.

But Lampard says that nothing has changed yet, telling talkSPORT: “He’s our player and the latest is the same as what I said after the game against Nottingham Forest.

“He’s our player and he’s got three years left on his contract. We’re aware of the interest of Chelsea as the world is now.

“This situation has to be right for Everton Football Club and for me as the coach of the team so we’re in the same position that we were a few days ago.”

  • Nick Pope: Newcastle United sign England goalkeeper from Burnley for an undisclosed fee

Newcastle United have signed England goalkeeper Nick Pope from relegated Burnley for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old moves to St James’ Park on a four-year contract after spending six seasons at Turf Moor.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe called Pope “an exceptional Premier League and international-level goalkeeper”.

“I’m very pleased to be adding strong competition to a very important position,” Howe added.

Pope joined Burnley in 2016 when the club was newly promoted to the top flight and made 155 appearances, including playing 36 times last season.

He played an integral part in helping the club qualify for the Europa League during the 2017-18 campaign when the Clarets finished seventh.

Pope’s England debut came in 2018 as a substitute against Costa Rica in a friendly. Then in March 2021 he became the first goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in his first six appearances for England following a 2-0 win over Albania.

On his move to Newcastle, Pope said: “Now I’m here, I can’t wait to get started.

“The deal has taken a couple of weeks to come to fruition, but it got over the line really quickly and I’m delighted to be here and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into it.”

Pope is Howe’s second summer deal after the Magpies completed the signing of Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett for £15m on a four-year contract.

Newcastle open their Premier League campaign against promoted Nottingham Forest on 6 August at 15:00 BST.
