53 Nigerians arrested in intelligence-led cybercrime crackdown

Fifty-three (53) Nigerian nationals have been arrested in coordinated intelligence-led operations by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) conducted in parts of Accra and its environs. Forty-four (44) others were rescued during the operation.

The Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Technologies, Sam George, made this known on the X platform on Sunday, January 18. According to him, the operations began on January 16 and 17, 2026, at centres located in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

“Over the last 48 hours, intelligence led by the @CSAGhana identified several suspected cybercrime centres operating within East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba. The intelligence indicated that young men were being exploited and coerced to engage in various cybercrime activities at these locations by kingpins.

“Acting on this CSA-led intelligence, a joint team comprising operatives from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the National Police SWAT conducted coordinated operations at the identified centres on 16th and 17th January 2026,” he wrote.

Fifty-two (52) assorted mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns were retrieved at the end of the searches.

“During the operations, nine (9) Nigerian nationals were arrested as suspects, while forty-four (44) additional Nigerian nationals believed to be victims were rescued. The victims were found in their respective apartments, operating laptop computers. Searches conducted in the apartments resulted in the retrieval of the following items: – Fifty-two (52) assorted mobile phones – Sixty-two (62) laptop computers – Two (2) pump-action guns,” he stated.

Last year, Cyber Security Authority (CSA) announced over GH¢19 million in losses to cybercrime between January and September this year, marking a 17 per cent increase in cyber crimes compared to the same period in 2024.

The Authority’s Head of Law Enforcement and Liaison at the CSA, Colonel George Eduah Bessi, made this revelation during a cybersecurity awareness webinar organised by the Africa Centre for Digital Transformation.

He expressed concern over the growing trend of online crimes in Ghana, highlighting the dangers it poses to the economy. Earlier in the year, the authority reported a steep rise in cybercrime, with a record 2,008 cyber incidents, marking a 52 per cent rise from 2024.

He said that among the online crimes, the most prevalent is online fraud, which makes up about 36% of the reported cases, including mobile money scams, fake investment schemes, phishing attacks, and cyberbullying, mostly targeting women and children, and representing 25% of all reported incidents.

Colonel Bessi mentioned that his outfit has ramped up efforts to create awareness and ensure regulations compliance among users, urging individuals and businesses to adopt stronger cybersecurity practices.
He commended the Africa Centre for Digital Transformation for its ongoing efforts, stressing that such initiatives are critical to sanitising the digital ecosystem and preventing future threats.

“The rising losses highlight the urgent need for greater cybersecurity awareness across all sectors of Ghana’s digital economy,” he cautioned.
His remarks come on the back of the government’s establishment of a $50 million fund to help fight cyber crimes in the country.

President John Mahama announced this in a speech at the launch of the 2025 National Cyber Security Awareness Month and the inauguration of the Joint Cyber Security Committee, which took place at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Wednesday, October 1.

“We are establishing a $50 million FinTech Growth Fund to support Ghanaian innovators in developing digital solutions tailored to our local needs. This initiative is a key pillar of our Reset Ghana agenda, aimed at boosting the digital economy and strengthening our fight against cybercrime,” he said.

He continued that the fund forms part of his government’s Reset Ghana agenda, which seeks to build a strong and secure digital system.
“As we expand digital public services and mobile money usage, we must reinforce the systems that safeguard them. This is why under the Reset Ghana agenda, my administration has prioritised digital transformation as a key part of our national development policy. And cybersecurity is at the core of that transformation,” President Mahama said.

The President outlined four flagship digital programmes already underway. These include the One Million Coders Programme, which seeks to train young Ghanaians in software engineering, data analytics, and cybersecurity; and the Digital Jobs Initiative, a public-private partnership aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunities in technology.

He added that the new FinTech Growth Fund will support local start-ups to design financial technology solutions that can serve both Ghana and the wider African market.

“The FinTech Growth Fund will support local start-ups to design financial technology solutions that serve Ghana and can be scaled across the African continent. We are investing in innovation that reflects our realities and empowers our people,” he said.

At the same event, Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has confirmed INTERPOL’s report that sixty-eight suspected cybercriminals have been apprehended by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service in a joint operation which led to the seizure of more than 800 electronic devices linked to online fraud and other illegal activities.

The Asawase Member of Parliament highlighted the government’s commitment to fighting online crime.

“Our cybercrime units successfully arrested 68 suspected cybercriminals, identified 108 victims, and seized over 885 electronic devices linked to illicit activities,” he said.

“This remarkable achievement underscores the unwavering commitment of the Government of Ghana to safeguarding our digital space, protecting our citizens and contributing to the global fight against cybercrime.”

He also highlighted that the Ghana security service is stepping up cyber intelligence and open-source monitoring efforts to track and neutralise threats before they escalate.

“In this fast-evolving landscape, proactive intelligence gathering and threat monitoring are essential. To this end, the Ghana Police Service is employing cyber intelligence, open-source intelligence techniques, and internal data-sharing platforms to identify, track, and neutralise threats before they escalate,” the Minister noted.

On Thursday, September 26, INTERPOL issued a statement a release shared by INTERPOL on its official website, the international security agency revealed that the operation, dubbed Operation Contender 3.0 and funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office under the African Joint Operation against Cybercrime project, discovered that these criminal syndicates caused USD 450,000 in financial losses, with USD 70,000 recovered in cash.

“Ghanaian authorities arrested 68 individuals, seized 835 devices and identified 108 victims. Their investigations revealed USD 450,000 in financial losses, with USD 70,000 recovered,” excerpts of the statement revealed.

According to INTERPOL, the operation was targeted at criminal networks exploiting social media and dating platforms to carry out romance scams and sextortion.

“The crackdown targeted transnational criminal networks exploiting digital platforms, particularly social media, to manipulate victims and defraud them financially. Specifically, the operation focused on romance scams, where perpetrators build online relationships to extract money from victims, and sextortion, in which victims are blackmailed with explicit images or videos,” the statement said.

INTERPOL explained: “…For romance scams, the suspects had used fake profiles, forged identities and stolen images to deceive victims. The scammers extracted payments using a range of schemes, including fake courier and customs shipment fees. In sextortion cases, offenders secretly recorded intimate videos during explicit chats and used them for blackmail.”

On the continent level, these syndicates have caused an estimated $2.8 million in losses to 1,463 identified victims.

During the operation, police identified IP addresses, digital infrastructures, domains and social media profiles linked to members of the scam syndicates. These leads and the subsequent arrests also resulted in the seizure of USB drives, SIM cards, and forged documents, as well as the takedown of 81 cybercrime infrastructures across Africa.

The operation, which ran from July 28 to August 11, 2025, resulted in the seizure of 1,235 electronic devices continent-wide.

Acting Executive Director of Police Services at INTERPOL, Cyril Gout, highlighted the growing threat, stating, “Cybercrime units across Africa are reporting a sharp rise in digital-enabled crimes such as sextortion and romance scams. The growth of online platforms has opened new opportunities for criminal networks to exploit victims, causing both financial loss and psychological harm.”

He emphasised that collaboration between INTERPOL, its member countries, and private sector partners like Group-IB and Trend Micro was crucial to the operation’s success, enabling enhanced data sharing and swift enforcement actions that led to the takedown of 81 cybercrime infrastructures.

“The transnational operation was strengthened by collaboration with private sector partners Group-IB and Trend Micro, resulting in enhanced data sharing and operational capabilities. The exchange of INTERPOL cyber activity reports facilitated swift enforcement actions from participating countries, underscoring the value of international cooperation in combating cybercrime,” INTERPOL highlighted.

  •  Mercy Johnson drops all charges against TikToker over alleged defamation

Mercy Johnson drops all charges against TikToker over alleged defamation

Famous Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson dropped all charges against Eedie Bliss over alleged defamation.

The Daily Post reports that Eedie Bliss was arrested some days ago over a video she shared on TikTok in December 2025 about Mercy Johnson and her husband, Prince Henry Okojie.

Hours later, popular social media critic VeryDarkMan criticised the actress and accused her of oppression, noting that defamation is a civil case.

Joining other Nigerians in seeking Bliss’s release from police detention, VeryDarkMan issued an ultimatum to the actress.

A few hours later, VeryDarkMan announced the TikTok creator’s release.

He wrote on his Instagram page: “@MercyJohnsonOkojie, thank you very much, my GREATEST OF ALL TIME, for dropping the case. Moving on, I am buying all defamation cases against Mercy Johnson and her family. The bullying is too much. You all should leave her family alone.”

In the video, the TikTok personality claimed that Prince Okojie recently purchased a house for a woman said to be his pregnant mistress.

Citing Cutie Juls as her source, Eedie Bliss also alleged that the actress supposedly worked with the woman’s house help in an attempt to cause her to lose the pregnancy.

Last year, Singer Wendy Shay officially filed a complaint with the Ghana Police Service concerning allegations that she is engaged in lesbianism with a young girl she has adopted, known as Tracy Shay.

A young man, in a viral video, alleges that Wendy is acting on a spiritualist’s instructions to engage in inappropriate conduct with the minor.

Wendy is therefore urging the public to help identify the perpetrator so the person can be held accountable.

“The matter has been formally reported to the Ghana Police Service, and active investigations are underway. I have been informed that the individual behind the account has been traced to the United Arab Emirates, where he is currently employed with a construction company. Further steps are being taken through the appropriate channels to ensure he is held accountable for his actions.

“I am cooperating fully with the police and trust the investigation process to bring this matter to a swift and just resolution. I further encourage us all to continue standing against cyberbullying, online harassment, and malicious attacks on innocent people,” the statement shared on November 19, 2025, read.

Legal representatives of renowned gospel musician Evangelist Diana Asamoah also strongly refuted claims suggesting that she is a lesbian.

In a statement addressing a viral video circulating on social media, the legal team dismissed the allegations as slanderous and baseless.

The video, featuring a woman of unknown identity, insinuates that the gospel singer is involved in same-sex relationships.

According to the statement, Evangelist Diana Asamoah categorically denies the claim and maintains that she does not engage in any form of lesbianism.

Her legal representatives have challenged the individual behind the accusations to step forward and provide evidence, indicating their readiness to contest the matter in court.

“In the circumstances, we are throwing a challenge to the lady in the video to own up and justify her vile allegations so we contest her baseless claim in a court of competent jurisdiction,” the statement read.

The legal team further urged the public to disregard the video should the accuser fail to substantiate her claims.

This development follows a growing trend of public figures facing unfounded allegations online, raising concerns about misinformation and defamation on social media.

A dancer and member of the DWP Academy, Lisa Quama, has addressed speculations surrounding her style of dressing, firmly stating that her fashion choices do not define her sexuality.

Despite acknowledging her tomboyish style, Lisa strongly dismissed claims that she is a lesbian, emphasizing that one’s choice of clothing does not determine their sexual orientation.

“I am not a lesbian. That is a sexual narrative, but a tomboy is simply someone comfortable in male clothes. Yes! I love men with all my heart,” she clarified on The Delay Show on March 8, 2025

Lisa initially hesitated when asked whether she identified as a tomboy. However, after persistent questioning from the host, she eventually embraced the label.

“I don’t want to say yes… I will never be a boy because I am a girl. I am not dressing like a boy… You know what? I am a tomboy. I have accepted that I am a tomboy,” she admitted.

Her remarks come in response to ongoing social media discussions about her appearance, reinforcing the point that personal style should not be mistaken for one’s sexuality.

Ace Ghanaian Highlife musician and actress Paulina Oduro has hit back at rumors about her sexuality, calling them baseless and absurd.

Addressing the speculation that she is a lesbian, she expressed frustration over such claims, emphasizing that her role as a mother should be enough to dismiss the allegations.

“I had an interview with Delay, and she said people say I am a lesbian,” Oduro recalled during a discussion on Joy Prime on March 26, 2025. “I ended up saying they are very stupid and idiots because I have three kids and an amazing relationship with my partners.”

The veteran musician, who has remained single for some time, noted that her happiness is not dependent on being in a relationship. She asserted that she is emotionally independent and does not need a romantic partner to feel fulfilled.

“I have been on my own for a while. I don’t need a man or another human being to make me happy,” she stated. “You can be who you want to be, but don’t label me because it is something I don’t like.”

Paulina Oduro’s response comes on the back of public scrutiny regarding her relationship status, with some speculating about her sexual orientation. She expressed disappointment that people could fabricate such claims simply because she has chosen to remain single.

With a long-standing career in entertainment, Oduro has built a reputation as a bold and outspoken personality. She made it clear that she refuses to conform to societal expectations or entertain false narratives about her personal life.

Peller apologizes to fans for attempting to kill himself

Popular TikToker Peller has publicly apologized to fans for attempting to commit suicide through reckless driving.

“I am sorry, Nigerians. Please, I’m sorry. I will never do that again. I’m very sorry, please. For now, I am on medication. Once I am done with my medication, I will be online,” he said in a video shared on TikTok.

The incident has been associated with Peller’s recent split from his girlfriend, Jarvis.

Jarvis had earlier made public that their relationship had ended, explaining that Peller’s difficulty in managing his emotions played a major role in the decision.

The Lagos State Police Command later confirmed that Peller had been arrested, explaining that his conduct was viewed as an intentional act that endangered both himself and other motorists.

Police reports indicate that the incident happened on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when Peller allegedly drove dangerously while streaming live on social media. The situation reportedly resulted in a serious accident on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.

Authorities further revealed that the matter has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiries, noting that Peller will be arraigned before a court.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, warned social media influencers and content creators to desist from encouraging reckless actions online, emphasizing that such behaviour will not be accepted.

A viral video that emerged on Sunday, December 14, 2025, captured the suspect recklessly driving on a public road while broadcasting it live on social media.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, Peller’s arrest was confirmed.

“The suspect will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law,” the police said.

Commissioner of Police CP Jimoh strongly warned social media influencers, content creators, and the public against taking part in or promoting risky, illegal, or dangerous activities for the sake of content.

He emphasized that such behaviour can threaten public safety and lead to loss of life, making it clear that the Police Command will not tolerate any lawlessness.

“The full weight of the law will be applied to anyone found culpable,” the statement added.

The police also called on all drivers and pedestrians to follow traffic rules closely, emphasizing the Command’s dedication to protecting lives, upholding public order, and promoting safety throughout the state.

In 2024, Ghanaian Musician Kofi Kinaata calmed fears following a car accident on Sunday, September 22, confirming that he escaped without injury while on his way to an event in the Western Region.

During a Facebook Live session, Kinaata detailed the events leading up to the accident, stating, “Everyone is doing well, and thanks for the concerns.”

The award-winning singer also dispelled rumors of a driver’s death, clarifying that the reports are false.

He explained that their vehicle, while heading to a show in Nkroful, was involved in an accident after a motorbike rider unexpectedly crossed their path.

He mentioned that the individuals on the motorbike sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital, but none of his team members were harmed.

‘We are following up on the conditions of those on the motorbike and we will update everyone on the latest development. We are praying for a speedy recovery,” he added.

In the same year, Ghanaian gospel artist and preacher Sonnie Badu opened up about a traumatic domestic accident he suffered in December 2023, which resulted in the loss of two toes.

Just days before his highly anticipated Rhythm of Africa Concert on December 9, Badu revealed he had undergone surgeries on his leg following the incident.“I went through depression for six months, I’m left with only three toes,” he said.

Despite his condition, he still performed at the concert in Accra, prompting speculation on social media that his injury might be a publicity stunt a claim he strongly refuted.

Now, in a September 2024 interview on Onua Showtime, Badu shared the harrowing details of the accident. He explained that he slipped while cleaning a staircase, which caused his leg to impale a sharp metal rail, leading to severe injuries.

“I was bleeding everywhere. We drove to the hospital and I walked to the emergency. When the doctors checked, they asked where are my toes. I asked, ‘Which toes?’ I asked my team members to go check with a torchlight and they saw the toes on the floor, picked it up, placed them in an iced box and brought it to the hospital. The doctors checked and refused it,” he narrated.

Badu also revealed that he battled depression for six months following the accident, stating, “I’m left with only three toes.” During the interview, he showed host Nana Ama McBrown images related to the incident, further validating his account.

Earlier this year, popular Ghanaian musician and socialite, Oseikrom Sikani, survived a terrifying car accident that left his vehicle wrecked but miraculously spared his life.

The accident happened on February 20, 2025, and the artiste took to Snapchat to share his experience. According to him, his car flipped over about eight times, yet he walked away with only minor injuries.

“(The car somersaulted) more than 8 times… I don’t understand. Told you I saw death today, still living my one life,” he posted.

Though he escaped unhurt, he jokingly mentioned that he lost his grills in the crash.

Photos from the scene showed the badly damaged car and some bruises on his body. Fans and well-wishers have since flooded social media with messages of relief and support.

Oseikrom Sikani has assured everyone that he is doing fine and will be back to his usual self soon.

  • TikTok temporarily limits “late live sessions” in Nigeria

Nigerians have been temporarily blocked from accessing TikTok’s live feature at night following a recent rise in online sexual misconduct.

The notice was delivered to users on Monday through an in-app message, explaining that TikTok was reviewing its safety measures and had not provided a timeline for restoring the feature.

The message read “TikTok is temporarily limiting live late night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe and our community stays protected” it said.

“View once,” as they call it, refers to a practice where streamers perform explicit acts for large online audiences in return for virtual gifts, with some groups coordinating adult-themed broadcasts to earn quick payouts through the platform’s gifting system.

In reaction, many netizens have voiced concern, pointing out that the new development could negatively impact creators who rely on livestreams for legitimate content and business purposes.

Meanwhile, TikTok has earned people a fortune through their live sessions.

Hiplife musician Kwaw Kese revealed that he earned $1,000 from his TikTok live sessions in just three days.

However, he stated that the amount is not substantial enough to make him rely on the platform fully, as it cannot cover all his needs.

“The first three days I came on TikTok Live, I made $1,000. I don’t have time, and it is not TikTok money that will make me okay. I don’t give a damn, no matter what you people say. You haven’t seen someone who is unbothered before?”Kwaw Kese quizzed.

His comment comes in response to comment that he is now resorting to Tiktok as amaens to earn a living.

“Some of you are saying I come on TikTok because of money. If that were the case, I would be here every single day looking for money,” he said.

Singer Wendy Shay has revealed that she recently received an amount of ten thousand dollars $10,000 as earnings from YouTube.

In an interview on Adom TV, Wendy revealed that she receives thousands of dollars weekly from song streaming platforms and for this recent one, she has gone ahead to ask to transfer the money into her accounts.

“I was there this week when $10,000 dropped from YouTube, and that’s just YouTube alone. I don’t like to talk about my finances on air, but I receive thousands of dollars every week.” she said.

She added the the amount is just what Youtube pays her from time to time.

Adding that, earnings from other streaming platforms are yet to be known.

Wendy explained that music is tangible and streamed every day, which accounts for such earnings on a weekly basis.

Nigerian streamer Hamzat Habeeb Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, has earned 11 million coins on TikTok through the Hallelujah Challenge, a praise and prayer event currently ongoing on social media led by Pastor Nathaniel Bassey.

The TikToker expressed his uncontained joy on X extending his profound gratitude to Pastor Nathaniel.

According to an X user @AsakyGRN who shared the video, he explained the weight of Peller’s TikTok gain which explains why Peller is in disbelief and joyful at the same time.

I’d like you to please watch the video below to see Peller’s expression of excitement over the blessing he received through the religious event.

TikTok is giving several users a reason to smile as it’s earning them some cash and recognition, and Chef Abby is one of the beneficiaries.

Ghanaian culinary sensation and digital content creator Abena Amoakoa Sintim-Aboagye, popularly known as Chef Abbys, has stated that her rise to fame was completely unexpected.

Chef Abbys was selected as the only African creator to represent TikTok at the 2025 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France.

According to her, her TikTok journey began out of a simple joy of showcasing the beauty of Ghanaian cooking.

Little did she know that it was a step to attain greater heights.

“Honestly, I started just to share the joy of Ghanaian cooking. I never imagined TikTok would be the platform that would take me from Accra to the global stage in Cannes,” she reflected in an interview.

Chef Abbys has won the hearts of global audences by combiing the richness of traditional Ghanaian cuisine with a modern, visually appealing presentation style.

Her videos go beyond cooking. They celeberate local ingredients, shocase cultural traditions and tell the deeper stories behind Ghanaian meals to a worldwide audience.

After collaborating with international creators and partnering with major brands such as Nestlé and TikTok, she is now urging Ghanaian creatives to take bold steps and begin their journeys, even if everything isn’t perfect from the start.

“Don’t overthink it, Abena. Just start. Your story matters, and the world is waiting to hear it,” she said—speaking to her younger self, and now hoping the message resonates with every aspiring creator who doubts their value.

“You don’t need perfect lighting or a perfect video. Be yourself, and let your culture shine through your content. Your perspective is valid. The world doesn’t need another copy—it needs you.”

Ghanaian chef Failatu Abdul Razak, widely known as Chef Faila, has expressed that even though her attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the Longest Cooking Marathon by an individual was unsuccessful, she considers the experience a major breakthrough.

“Prior to the cooking marathon, I was simply a young woman from Northern Ghana, driven by passion to make a meaningful impact in my community. My ultimate goal was to shine a spotlight on the north, showcasing its richness and potential, while elevating Ghana’s profile globally.

“It was just a dream before my attempt. However, the GWR attempt proved to be a transformative experience, far exceeding my expectations. Although I didn’t break the record, I gained something more valuable in terms of visibility, connections and a platform to amplify my vision,” she said.

In contrast, Media personality and social media influencer Ama Pokuaa Memeneda Ba has revealed that despite having approximately 2.5 million followers, she is not earning money from her TikTok content.

In an interview on The Delay Show with Deloris Frimpong Manso, Ama Pokuaa discussed her failed attempts at joining the military, her venture into the media, and her eventual transition into content creation, primarily on TikTok.

When asked if she earns from her TikTok posts, Ama Pokuaa responded, “The videos I post on the platform don’t make me any money. It’s only when a follower gifts me that I can convert those gifts into cash.”

She clarified that while some creators go live on TikTok to request gifts, she does not engage in such practices.

Ama Pokuaa also disclosed that she has not secured any major brand deals and relies instead on occasional promotions for small businesses.

“I don’t have any contracts from brands either. Only one or two business owners contact me to promote their products,” she said.

In a lighthearted moment, she expressed her desire for a brand deal with Delay, saying, “I would be very happy if I got a brand deal from Delay,” which elicited laughter from the host.

  • Nigerians are patient and daring – Beverly Afaglo on movie industry support

Nigerians are patient and daring – Beverly Afaglo on movie industry support

Ghanaian filmmaker Beverly Afaglo has compared Ghana’s entertainment sector to that of Nigeria’s in terms of financial support.

In an interview on Joy FM on November 12, 2025, the award-winning actress lamented that institutions like banks are hesitant to support the country’s movie industry, but the situation is entirely different if Nigerians are involved.

“Banks are supporting, companies are supporting the business. In Ghana, banks don’t support anything. Even events that are for awards and stuff to recognise hard work, banks are not ready to support these events, how much more a movie,” she stated

Adding that Nigerian banks and private companies actively sponsor and finance creative projects

“Nigerians are daring. They don’t mind putting x amount in the business, provided you’ve assured them that they will get their money back. They don’t care how long; they’re patient. This is what I want too, I will wait and get it back,” she said.

Meanwhile, celebrated British actor and producer, Idris Elba, made a significant contribution to the future of African filmmaking by donating $25,000 to the University of Media Arts and Communication-Institute of Film and Television (UniMAC-IFT) in Accra.

The generous donation, announced during a courtesy visit to the university on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, is aimed at addressing the institution’s infrastructure challenges and advancing its mission to nurture the next generation of filmmakers.

Elba, known for his acclaimed roles in films such as Luther and Beasts of No Nation, expressed his deep passion for the creative industry, particularly for emerging filmmakers in Africa.

His visit to UniMAC-IFT was part of an effort to foster collaboration and support African film education.

He emphasized that Africa’s film industry holds immense potential to become a global storytelling powerhouse with the right partnerships and investments.

The $25,000 donation, made through Elba’s Elba Hope Foundation, will be directed specifically towards infrastructure development at the university.

The funds are expected to help improve facilities and provide students with the resources they need to develop their skills and pursue successful careers in the film and television industry.

During the visit, Elba met with the university’s management and staff, including the rector, Professor Samuel Manasseh Yirenkyi.

The discussion centered on the university’s accomplishments, its challenges, and the potential impact of collaborations with key figures in the global film industry.

Elba also shared his vision for an upcoming studio project designed to offer world-class training opportunities to students from around the globe.

The rector of UniMAC-IFT, visibly moved by Elba’s gesture, expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating that the donation would make a lasting impact on the university’s growth.

He noted that this contribution would allow the institution to enhance its capacity to train and equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in the competitive global film industry.

Elba’s visit to UniMAC-IFT has not only inspired hope within the institution but also reinforced the importance of international collaborations in strengthening Africa’s creative industries.

As the rain slowed to a gentle drizzle outside, the promise of progress and empowerment for African filmmakers seemed to be a reality that could now be within reach.

Elba’s commitment to African film education and his dedication to helping aspiring filmmakers serves as a beacon of hope, lighting the way for the next generation of creative talent.

His $25,000 donation is a step toward realizing the full potential of Africa’s vibrant and growing film industry.

Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker and comedian, Kwaku Simtim-Misa, widely known as KSM, has offered a candid assessment of Ghana’s movie industry, stressing that it cannot yet be compared to the Nigerian film industry in terms of growth, structure, and contribution.

Speaking on The Career Trail program on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, KSM said that while Ghana is blessed with talented filmmakers and promising content, the absence of a sustainable and efficient system continues to hinder the industry’s growth.

“Unfortunately, it is still a growing industry. We can’t compare the film industry in Ghana to that of Nigeria. The Nigerians have had a longer time of being exposed to making films. And the more they make them, the better they get. The more they produce, the more they devise ways of distributing them. Eventually, you realize you’ve developed a system that works for you,” KSM stated.

On the other hand, he said Ghana’s film industry is still trying to find its feet.

Most filmmakers struggle to raise money at every stage, from writing the story, shooting the film, paying actors, to finally getting the movie out there for people to watch.

“Somebody will hustle to make money, then hustle to pay for the film. And after paying for the film, the actors, and everyone else involved, they now have to hustle again just to distribute the film. There are no proper distribution outlets,” he lamented.

Ghana’s film industry, once vibrant in the CD/DVD era, now struggles with structure, funding, and proper distribution.

Unlike Nigeria’s Nollywood, which has grown into a globally recognized industry through consistent production, strong distribution networks, and digital platforms, Ghana’s sector remains largely informal.

Filmmakers often self-fund and face hurdles getting their movies widely seen.

While a few initiatives and talented individuals are pushing forward, veteran filmmaker KSM says the lack of a solid system continues to limit growth and makes it difficult to compare Ghana’s industry with Nigeria.

Nigerians have expressed excitement over the transfer of Christ Embassy’s Airport City church Pastor Enoch Boamah from Ghana, with many taking to social media to celebrate the news.

Among the viral responses was one that read, “My dear Ghanaian family, you can take the jollof, we have Pastor @erock_official.”

Another comment from an Instagram user was, “And Pastor Enoch came in the month of Joy…Feasting in a higher level”

“Pastor Enoch, we love you. Welcome to Abuja Zone 1,” were the comments from Nigerians reflecting their joy but contrasting the emotions of their kingdom siblings in Ghana.

Meanwhile, Pastor Enoch has described his ministry journey as a fight well fought, bidding farewell to the congregation in Ghana after news broke of his transfer to Nigeria.

This brought sorrow and gratitude as church members approached the tale end of their Sunday service on July 6. 2025.

Close sources to The Independent Ghana revealed that the announcement made by the LoveWorld President, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, came as a shock to everyone, including Pastor Enoch.

Nonetheless, the man of God took to his WhatsApp status after their service, where he wrote, “I have fought a good fight.”

The source added that, Pastor Enoch’s transfer is somewhat part of his advancement in the Kingdom mandate.

He is set to continue his pastorial duties in Nigeria where he will serve as a Zonal Pastor.

His departure takes immediate effect as instructed by the LoveWorld President, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

This may mean that the congregation will not see him the following Sunday, not even for a farewell service or celebration.

One of the notable battles Pastor Enoch had to face in his ministry was following the organization of Pnewmatica Night 2021.

It was a major Christ Embassy event held at the Fantasy Dome, Trade Fair Centre, on Friday, April 230, 2021.

The event drew thousands of participants but came under public and legal scrutiny after photos and videos emerged showing attendees worshipping withoput face masks and seated in close proximity.

At the time, it was violating the state-imposed COVID-19 safety protocols.

The church’s action drew backlash from the public, with arguments that they were not only breaching the Imposition of Restrictions Act but also risked pushing the country into a third wave of COVID-19 infections.

Consequently, the church was charged for failing to comply with restriction contrary to Regulation 4 of E.I. 395 and Section 6 of the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012).

The church was in court for two years over the matter but emerged victorious.

Nigerians in Diaspora Ghana repatriates 36 stranded citizens

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Ghana chapter, in partnership with the Nigerian High Commission, has successfully facilitated the rescue and repatriation of 36 stranded Northern Nigerian nationals back to Sokoto State, Nigeria.

NIDO Ghana President, Prince Olayemi, confirmed the news in a video shared with the media, as the bus transporting the individuals departed from Ghana.

The group, consisting of construction workers, had traveled through various West African countries, including Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Niger, seeking employment opportunities.

Their journey took a difficult turn when the contract they were working on in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, ended, and their handler abandoned them. While attempting to return to Nigeria, they found themselves stranded in Ghana, where NIDO stepped in to assist.

“They are site engineer workers, they’re all Northerners. You can see it, 36 Northern citizens, Nigerian Northern citizens, all are Hausas,” Olayemi told MyNigeria.

“They used to travel from the West Coast and go through Ivory Coast, Ghana and all that, go to Niger and all that. They used to go and work, they are builders. So, they became stranded because their contract expired and the individual responsible for them had dumped them”

“So, they only managed to get to Ghana and they became stranded and couldn’t go further,” he said.

According to Olayemi, the workers have been in their care after being stranded for 10 days.

“They have been around in the last two weeks and we’ve been attending to them in the last 10 days. We finally secured a bus going to Sokoto state for them yesterday and they’ve departed.”

The President extended his appreciation to Ghana’s High Commissioner, Ambassador Moses Ifedayo Adeoye, for his generous financial assistance and help in securing the necessary clearance for the stranded workers.

He highlighted that the High Commission also facilitated the registration of the vehicle used to transport the workers, ensuring they encountered no administrative hurdles during their journey. Furthermore, the workers were given funds to assist them once they arrived in Nigeria.

The President also praised the Arewa community in Ghana for their immense support, noting their crucial role in offering shelter and food to the workers throughout their stay.

Former Big Brother Naija star, Kiddwaya shared a troubling incident on Instagram, revealing that his villa in Ibiza was raided during the early hours of the morning.

This marks the second time such an incident has occurred, with approximately €70,000 Euros and a Birkin bag stolen on this occasion.

Urging caution to fellow Nigerians traveling to Europe, especially when staying in villas, Kiddwaya emphasized the importance of heightened security measures such as employing private drivers and ensuring constant surveillance on the property.

“Nigerians who have money and are travelling to Europe, if you’re going to a villa, be very careful. Make sure you have extra security. Make sure you have bouncers and people walking on the property day and night. Don’t get a regular taxi; always have a private driver before the local taxis are in on it. Also, be careful with your maid; she is the one who goes into the room and knows where the money is and where everything is kept. So if you’re travelling to Europe this summer, be very guided,” he concluded

Nigerians criticize new levy on electronic banking transactions

Many Nigerians have expressed disapproval of the newly introduced levy on electronic banking transactions, fearing it will force them to revert to cash usage.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has informed financial institutions that the 0.5% levy, aimed at bolstering cybersecurity measures, will be implemented in two weeks.

Amid Nigeria’s severe economic downturn, exacerbated by the levy, many citizens foresee added financial strain in meeting basic needs.

Dr. Abdulrazaq Fagge, an economics lecturer at Yusuf Maitama University, criticizes the government’s decision, anticipating adverse repercussions on the nation’s fragile economy.

According to him, burdening citizens with additional fees during economic hardship is unjustifiable and detrimental, particularly to small businesses.

He argues that banks, profiting substantially, should bear the levy rather than passing it on to individuals.

Local bread seller Abubakar Sheka vows to avoid electronic transactions once the levy is enforced on May 20, citing the undue burden on his meager income.

The Nigeria Labour Congress and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have both condemned the levy, with SERAP threatening legal action against the government.

The government has yet to respond to public outcry.

Public affairs analyst Habu Sani asserts that the levy contradicts the government’s cashless economy initiative, predicting a resurgence in cash transactions.

He warns of potential cash shortages if the government does not reconsider its decision.

In 2023, cash shortages plagued Nigeria following currency reforms by the CBN aimed at combating electoral fraud, prompting a shift towards mobile money usage.

While mobile payment services saw increased usage, digital penetration remains low due to inadequate mobile network coverage in rural areas and limited smartphone accessibility for many Nigerians.

Despite its daunting composition, Enioluwa surprises viewers as he swiftly consumes the meal, even nonchalantly chewing through the leaves incorporated in the dish.

  • Rejected rice now ‘delicacy’ for Nigerians

Rejected rice now ‘delicacy’ for Nigerians

Amidst the escalating cost of living in northern Nigeria, an increasing number of individuals are turning to rice grains known as afafata, which are typically discarded by millers or sold to farmers for fish feed.

The term “afafata” in the local Hausa language translates to “battling,” reflecting the difficulty of cooking and consuming these exceptionally hard grains.

A rice mill worker in Kano, Isah Hamisu, noted the shifting attitude towards afafata, stating that in the past, such rice was disregarded, but changing times have made it a more viable option.

Despite being broken, dirty, and tough, the affordability of afafata has made it a popular choice, allowing economically disadvantaged families to include this staple food in their diet.

The surge in prices in Nigeria, reaching levels unseen in nearly 30 years, is driven by various factors, including global pressures, the cancellation of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, and the devaluation of the currency (naira), contributing to inflation.

As a result, the cost of a standard 50kg bag of rice has risen by over 70% since the middle of the previous year, surpassing the monthly income of a majority of Nigerians.

Facing economic challenges and cost-of-living protests in some states, many families in the north are turning to afafata as a more affordable option. The rising demand for afafata has even impacted the price of fish, as mentioned by fish farm owner Fatima Abdullahi.

Nigeria is witnessing its most rapid price increases in almost three decades, exacerbated by global economic pressures. President Bola Tinubu’s decision to eliminate the fuel subsidy, coupled with the devaluation of the national currency, the naira, has further fueled inflation.

The standard 50kg (110lb) bag of rice, capable of sustaining a household of eight to ten people for a month, has now surged to 77,000 naira ($53; £41). This marks a staggering increase of over 70% since the middle of the previous year, surpassing the monthly income of the majority of Nigerians.

In response to these economic challenges, an increasing number of families in the north are turning to afafata. However, the rising reliance on this unconventional rice option reflects a larger struggle, leading to protests and challenges in various states.

Protesters in Niger state, central Nigeria, recently blocked roads and displayed placards, expressing their suffocation under the weight of escalating prices. A similar demonstration unfolded in Kano in the north-west, prompting Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf to acknowledge the presence of starvation in his state, emphasizing the need for a solution.

For some, the immediate solution lies in afafata, as shared by Hajiya Rabi Isah in Kano. She highlighted the financial constraints that make normal rice unaffordable, with prices soaring to 4,000 naira ($2.70) per bowl. In contrast, afafata, priced at 2,500 naira ($1.69), has become a more viable option to feed her family.

Market sellers, including Saminu Uba in Kano’s Medile market, have observed a surge in the popularity of afafata. Many customers, faced with the alarming doubling of prices in just two months, are adapting to the economic challenges by opting for the more affordable but less palatable rice option. The economic strain is palpable, with individuals navigating creative solutions to cope with the rapidly changing cost of goods.

Many more families in the north are now opting to buy afafata

Faleye Olushola, the special assistant to Herbert Wigwe, co-founder and group chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc, narrowly escaped tragedy on February 9.

Mr Wigwe, along with his wife and son, lost their lives in a helicopter crash.

The unfortunate incident involved Flight N130CZ, operated by Orbic Air LLC, crashing in the USA on February 10, with Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and his son among the six passengers on board.

Remarkably, Olushola, listed on the manifest, avoided the disaster by choosing to travel by road instead of taking the helicopter from Palm Springs to Boulder City in Nevada.

Olushola, who had flown with Wigwe and others from London to Palm Springs, decided against the helicopter due to concerns about night-time weather conditions.

This decision spared him from the tragic air disaster that claimed the lives of four individuals, including Wigwe and his family.

Access Holdings responded to the incident, expressing a lack of “adequate information” about the crash and assuring collaboration with US authorities for updates.

Herbert Wigwe, known for inspiring messages, regularly shared positive content on his social media accounts, emphasizing living a life of purpose, kindness, and gratitude.

In another development, Adams Oshiomhole, the senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, urged Nigerians not to solely blame President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the current state of the nation.

Oshiomhole attributed some of the challenges to the policies of the previous administration led by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

He emphasized that national interest should take precedence over partisan considerations and acknowledged his criticism of Buhari’s policies during an interview on Channels TV.

Video: Nigerians mock South Africans with Tyla’s song “Water” after AFCON victory

After Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a victory over South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations, a video capturing the jubilant celebration of Nigerian fans has circulated widely on social media.

In the video, ecstatic Super Eagles supporters mock their South African counterparts by dousing themselves with liquid while chanting the lyrics of the hit song “Water” by South African artist Tyla.

Despite South Africa’s recent win at the Grammy Awards in the Best African Music Performance category, disappointed Nigerian fans vowed retaliation during the AFCON semi-final match.

Following Nigeria’s triumph over South Africa in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night, scenes of jubilation erupted across the country.

The rivalry between Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, and South Africa, the continent’s most advanced economy, has a long history.

The viral video, filmed at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, shows hundreds of students congregating to sing “Water” in celebration of the Super Eagles’ victory.

Even popular Nigerian pastor Jimmy Odukoya joined in the jesting, acknowledging Bafana Bafana for their efforts while humorously suggesting they “need water” after their defeat, adding, “If it’s any consolation, it’s Grammy water.”

Some Nigerians have expanded the banter to music preferences, asserting the superiority of Afrobeats over South Africa’s amapiano genre. Culinary comparisons have also emerged, with Nigerians claiming their Jollof Rice outshines South Africa’s Bobotie.

Nigeria will face Ivory Coast in the final match on Sunday, with many South Africans likely to support the Ivorian team.

Triumphant Nigerians make fun of South Africans with Tyla hit

A video of people from Nigeria celebrating their soccer team’s win against South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations is getting a lot of views on social media.

In the video, fans of the Super Eagles team tease their opponents by pouring water on themselves and singing the song “Water” by South African singer Tyla.

On Sunday, she won an award for Best African Music Performance at the Grammys, by doing better than many famous Nigerian singers.

Upset Nigerians promised to get back at the Afcon semi-final.

The hashtag #NGARSA is popular in Nigeria and South Africa as people make jokes about each other.

Nigerians and South Africans have been joking with each other that their Jollof Rice is tastier than South Africa’s Bobotie dish.

However, Nigerians think Afrobeats music is the best and they believe South Africans should just stick to dancing to amapiano, a type of music that’s a mix of hip-hop, soul, and slowed-down house music.

Jimmy Odukoya, a well-known Nigerian pastor, has also joked about Bafana Bafana’s performance, praising them despite their loss. He told the South African players that they need water.

He said: “If it helps, it’s really good water. ”

Nigeria will play against Ivory Coast on Sunday in the final match.

Many people in South Africa will probably support the team from Ivory Coast.

Nigerians are the best to befriend, If you want to make it overseas – Ghanaian man ‘confesses’

The disparity between Ghanaians and Nigerians living abroad has been elucidated by a Ghanaian living in the United states of America.

The individual stated that throughout his life abroad, he has formed strong friendships with Nigerians who have helped him succeed and thrive in his endeavors.

He characterizes Nigerians as friendly, ambitious, and sociable, traits that contribute to their success and prominence wherever they venture.

“When you travel and you are with Nigerians you are ok. Nigerians gave me my breakthrough when I first entered this country. I was in very big club called Palladium as the club secreatry and at the same time head of the DJ’s. It got to a time I had to invite Ghanaians because Saturdays were offered to them to come around and have fun. I had to beg for them to come and even when they came they were sitting down with their hands folded into their tighs as though they had come for a funeral’, he expressed

He continued to lament on Ghanaians describing them timid and lack initiative, often failing to strive for self-improvement beyond attending uninvited funerals and dressing dirty to church.

“Ghanaians outside don’t want to upgrade. You will often see them present at funerals, even when they are not invited. They go to church repeating the same clothes and Nigerians keeps insulting us that Ghanaians don’t know how to dress at all. [Ghana man go fit wear working gear enter church. Ghana man go fit wear working gear enter party? Working gear with hand dirty]. But a Nigerian even without papers will pass by you with some swag and you will love it.”

  • Grammy fallout: Are Nigerians claiming entitlement or voicing legitimate grievances?

Grammy fallout: Are Nigerians claiming entitlement or voicing legitimate grievances?

In the past hours, I’ve been closely following the discussions surrounding the disappointment felt by Nigerians over not securing a Grammy award this year.

It’s unclear to me whether this reaction is fueled by sour grapes or a sense of unwarranted entitlement.

Influential figures in the industry have made claims such as “They used us for traction,” “They’re clueless about our genre,” and “They played us and tapped into our huge numbers.”

Even worse, there’s a movement to generalize that Africans were manipulated, advocating for a Grammy boycott.

I find this amusing because it’s not the first time the Grammys have snubbed an artist. Some of the ‘greatest’ Grammy snubs include rapper Snoop Dog, who has been nominated 16 times, Katy Perry and the legendary Diana Ross with 13 nominations each, and Nicki Minaj with 12 nominations.

    Snoop Dog
    Katy Perry
    Nicki Minaj

Turning our attention closer to home, Burna Boy clinched a Grammy with his album ‘Twice as Tall’ in 2021, but faced a snub with his earlier entry ‘African Giant’ in 2020.

Wizkid and other African and foreign nominees have also encountered Grammy snubs. So, where does all this sense of entitlement come from?

Wizkid and other African and foreign national nominees have also experienced Grammy snubs. So really, where from all this entitlement?

“Davido got three nominations“ and so what if he lost out??? Does it diminish his achievements as one of the continent’s most successful artists?

How do they REFUSE TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE, and THEIR GLASS NOT EVEN HALF FULL, but OVERFLOWING???

Despite not clinching a win, Burna Boy, a Nigerian artist, had a groundbreaking opportunity to perform live at the Grammy ceremony itself—not at the pre-event or after-party.

Comparatively, the organizers of BIG BROTHER NAIJA, under the guise of ‘gatekeeping,’ refused to let Ghanaian musician Olive The Boy perform on their live stage! Did we, as Ghanaians, choose to boycott Nigeria in response??

In my opinion, Burna Boy’s chance to represent himself, his continent, and our arts on the global stage holds more significance than any Nigerian nominee winning a Grammy this year. We shouldn’t overlook this importance.

While emotions understandably run high regarding prestigious awards like the Grammys, people may have different viewpoints on nominations and wins. Some may focus on the recognition and global platform, while others may feel disappointed by perceived snubs.

Nevertheless, it’s crucial to acknowledge achievements like Burna Boy’s live performance, which undoubtedly contributes to global exposure for African artists. Opinions may differ, but recognizing the broader impact can offer a balanced perspective.

Mr. Eazi clashes with Nigerian critic over ‘Detty Rave’ in Ghana

A social media user has questioned Mr. Eazi’s decision to organize a concert in Accra during a period when there’s a growing call among some Ghanaians for limiting foreign music.

This issue surfaced after the artist shared updates on the preparations at the location for his ‘Detty Rave’ concert, set for December 27, 2023. ‘Detty Rave’ is an annual event hosted by Mr. Eazi in Accra, Ghana, since 2017.

Despite this, a skeptical netizen is questioning the rationale behind the Nigerian singer’s plan to hold a concert in Ghana, especially at a time when there are voices advocating for a reduction in foreign music.

“Accra wen want ban 9ja music na im u dey go do show,” the netizen quizzed.

Mr. Eazi furiously attacked the social media user in return, questioning if he had any evidence to support his claims.

Mr. Eazi asked if he had seen any legislation to that effect or heard the president make any pronouncement about it, characterizing the netizen as naive and uninformed.

“Olodo so you see am for presidential declaration abi the law pass for parliament?! Next time use your brain small!” Mr. Eazi responded.

Nigerians refuse to support Ghanaian musicians Black Sherif and others

There are reports that a segment of Nigerians is actively avoiding Black Sherif, who holds considerable popularity in Nigeria and boasts a substantial fan base, even surpassing some local artists.

This development follows the circulation of a video wherein certain musicians were seen advocating for the promotion of Ghanaian music during the festive season.

Black Sherif, in particular, has since been singled out and subjected to intense backlashes from Nigerians.

    Background

A group of Ghanaian artistes, including Samini, Reggie Rockstone, Smallgod, DJ Mensah, and Black Sherif, have been vocal about promoting 100% Ghanaian music this December.

Their advocacy aims to highlight the richness and diversity of the local music scene during the festive season.

Notably, there has been no mention of banning foreign music, specifically Nigerian tracks as perceived.

UK authorities release CCTV footage detailing fatal stabbing of Ghanaian student by two Nigerians

A 19-year-old Nigerian, Ogechi Eke, has been convicted of murdering a 19-year-old Ghanaian student, Kwabena Osei-Poku, at the University of Northampton.

The incident, which occurred on April 24, 2023, involved Eke and his accomplice, Melvin Lebaga-Idubor, stabbing Osei-Poku in a dispute over a significant amount of cannabis.

According to a report by northants.police.uk, the two Nigerians initially arranged to meet the victim at a university flat, claiming they wanted to buy drugs from him.

However, upon meeting, Eke and Lebaga-Idubor decided to steal the drugs and warned Osei-Poku not to sell in the area.

The altercation led to a fight, during which Lebaga-Idubor stabbed Osei-Poku twice. Despite the paramedics’ efforts, Osei-Poku succumbed to his injuries.

The incident was captured in CCTV footage released by Northamptonshire Police, depicting the victim pursuing the accused on the street and the two Nigerians running back from the scene.

This led to a fight and an eyewitness is reported to have heard Lebage-Idubor say, “This is my strip. What are you doing—strutting drugs around here? Our line is here.”

Lebaga-Idubor successfully took the drugs from the victim’s hand and left the campus with Eke.

Osei-Poku then pursued them to retrieve his drugs, leading to an altercation.

During the confrontation on New South Bridge Road, Lebaga-Idubor stabbed Osei-Poku twice, resulting in his death at the scene despite paramedics’ efforts.

CCTV footage released by Northamptonshire Police captured the incident, showing the victim following the accused on the street.

The video also depicted the two Nigerians running back from the scene and entering a building, where one of them was seen assisting the other, who was injured.

Nigerians protest ‘N160m SUV for Lawmakers’ Policy on the streets

On Monday, there were protests in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as young people protested the National Assembly members’ allocation of sport utility vehicles.

The youths who gathered in large numbers in the Lagos neighborhood of Ikeja held placards and chanted, among other things, “Fund hospitals, not SUVs,” “Pay living wage, not SUVs,” “Return the SUVs Now,” and “Fund education, not SUVs.”

As stated by the demonstrators, “Lawmakers buying SUVs with public funds is insensitive when the majority are suffering.”

One of the protesters, Juwon Sanyaolu said, “Workers are still battling for a living wage as the N33,000 minimum wage is not sustainable but we have people at NASS taking delivery of exotic vehicles with about N160bn. Students are dropping out of school because of costly fees. It’s insensitive. They must return the SUVs and fund education.”

He further said, “They’re the ones receiving hardship allowance. What hardship are they facing? What hard work are they doing?”

In Abuja, some youths also gathered at the Unity Fountain to protest.

“This is the right time for Nigerian people to stand up for their rights and say enough is enough.

“Fuel is now N650 per litre but senators are buying SUVs worth N160m while people are suffering,” a protester Emmanuel Larry said in Abuja.

On Sunday, reports emerged that members of the Green Chamber had commenced receiving their SUVs, while the legislators in the Red Chamber are expected to receive the first batch of their SUVs this week.

The remaining batch of SUVs for lawmakers is anticipated to arrive before December.

These actions come after the leadership of the National Assembly announced their decision to procure imported SUVs for each lawmaker and bulletproof vehicles for principal officers.

This move has sparked significant criticism among Nigerians, leading to the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project filing an application in a Federal High Court in Lagos to halt the lawmakers from taking delivery of the SUVs until the organization’s applications for injunction are heard and resolved.

Nigeria: Activist calls on politicians to come to Mr Ibu’s aid

An activist and the convener of the Concerned Nigerians group, Comrade Deji Adeyanju, has made a plea to Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, to utilize a portion of the N6.5 billion campaign funds he received during the 2023 elections to assist the ailing veteran Nollywood actor, John Ikechukwu Okafor, who is widely known as Mr. Ibu.

Furthermore, Adeyanju has urged Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to extend his support to the Nollywood actor and help him overcome his current health challenges.

Earlier, Mr. Ibu had publicly requested assistance from his fans, disclosing that an undisclosed ailment had left him bedridden for weeks and at risk of having his legs amputated.

In a subsequent video message on Wednesday, the prominent social media figure appealed to politicians and other fans to contribute any amount to help save the life of the beloved comic actor.

“Hello everyone, this is an appeal to every Nigerian to kindly help Mr Ibu, who is currently sick. It does not matter how much you can contribute. Let us help him. I also want to appeal to President Tinubu to kindly reach out to him and his family and help him and also to Peter Obi, who was aggressively supported during the last election to kindly support him.

“It’s not when something bad happens that people would start showing that ‘Oh Mr Ibu was a good man’. This is the time to really help Mr. Ibu. I hear that there’s about N6.5bn in the Labour Party presidential confers from the contributions we made in the last election. This is the time to use such money. Also, we can use from the EndSARS money, which is about $500,000 USD for good causes like this. God bless everyone. Amen,” Adeyanju said.

  • VISA restrictions against Nigerians still in force – UAE official

VISA restrictions against Nigerians still in force – UAE official

The Nigerian government’s claim that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to lift its year-long visa ban on Nigerian travelers has been contradicted by an official from the Gulf state.

An anonymous source from the UAE informed CNN that “There are no changes on the Nigeria/UAE travel status so far.” The source clarified that they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Last October, the UAE announced that it would no longer issue visas to citizens from Nigeria and 19 other African countries, though it did not provide specific details. Obtaining a 30-day tourist visa had been relatively straightforward until the UAE abruptly halted the issuance of visas to Nigerian nationals.

Flight operations between the two countries were also suspended last year after Dubai’s Emirates airline stopped its operations in Nigeria, citing difficulties in accessing and repatriating its funds totaling $85 million, which were held in Nigeria.

Recently, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu held a meeting with UAE leader Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, where they reportedly “finalized a historic agreement,” as stated by the Nigerian government. The government’s statement indicated that the agreement would lead to the lifting of the visa ban and the immediate resumption of flights between the two countries, with both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines mentioned.

However, a subsequent statement from the UAE government did not confirm the lifting of the visa ban or the resumption of flights. Instead, it mentioned that the leaders had explored opportunities for further bilateral collaboration and hoped to reinforce ties between the two nations.

In a follow-up statement, the Nigerian government spokesperson clarified that officials from both countries required more time to finalize the details of the agreement, contradicting the earlier statement. He emphasized the need to allow cabinet officials from both sides to work out the finer points and cross-sectoral agreements. He urged everyone to allow the process to proceed naturally, without speculation.

    An elite’s playground

The announcement of the visa ban being lifted sparked great excitement among Nigerians, leading to widespread jubilation.

Dubai has long been a favored destination for thousands of Nigerian tourists, and it has also served as a haven for real estate investors from Nigeria. Prior to the pandemic, Nigerians were among the largest foreign investors in Dubai’s real estate market, with investments totaling nearly $2 billion, as reported by local media, citing information from the Dubai Land Department.

Before the ban was imposed, Emirates Airlines operated two daily flights from Lagos, Nigeria, to Dubai, as well as one daily flight from the capital, Abuja, to Dubai.

Nigerians deny that sextortion caused the death of the teen

On Thursday, two Nigerian siblings entered a plea of not guilty in relation to charges connected with their involvement in an international sexual extortion ring that led a 17-year-old boy in Michigan, US, to tragically take his own life.

Samuel Ogoshi, 22, and Samson Ogoshi, 20, were extradited to the US on August 13th.

The FBI and the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission jointly conducted investigations that implicated them in a sextortion network targeting over 100 minors and adults.

During a press briefing on August 13th, Mark Totten, the US attorney for the Western District of Michigan, unveiled plans to extradite a third suspect, Ezekial Ejemeh Robert, aged 19.

Both Robert and the Ogoshi brothers are confronting three charges, including conspiracy to exploit minors sexually, conspiracy to disseminate child pornography, and conspiracy to engage in internet-based stalking.

Samuel Ogoshi faces an additional fourth charge for sexual exploitation and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, which resulted in the tragic death of the teenager.

According to prosecutors, Samuel, masquerading as a young woman on the Instagram social media platform, manipulated the teenage boy into sending a sexually explicit photo.

He is then alleged to have coerced the boy into giving him $1,000 and persisted in blackmail even after receiving $300. Samuel stands accused of inciting the boy to carry out his threat of suicide due to the blackmail, ultimately leading to the young boy’s untimely demise in March 2022.

Trade Unions in Nigeria call off strike over living expenses

The main labor union federations in Nigeria have agreed to pursue negotiations with the government and have delayed a statewide strike in protest of the growing cost of living.

The main problem is the withdrawal of the gasoline subsidy by President Bola Tinubu.

The government had until Wednesday to change its mind on the subsidies, according to the unions.

The unions organized marches in cities all throughout the nation on Wednesday as the authorities refused to budge.

But according to a statement from the Nigerian presidency, the unions have now consented to further negotiations.

“Consequent upon the fruitful and frank discussion with President Tinubu and their confidence in his ability to encourage open and honest consideration of all the issues put forward by the labour movement, the labour leaders resolved to stop further protest,” it said.

The Reuters news agency is quoting the Nigeria Labour Congress as saying that it had “decided for a return to a new and reinvigorated dialogue process”.

Since taking office as president in May, Mr. Tinubu has started a number of economic reforms.

He claimed that by eliminating the gasoline subsidy, which cost the government $10 billion (£8 billion) last year, the government will be able to allocate more funds to specific programs that benefit the less fortunate.

Nigerians pressure Victor Osimhen to take €1m week offer from Saudi club

Nigerian social media users have been advising Victor Osimhen to seriously consider Al Hilal’s tempting €1 million-a-week contract offer from Saudi Arabia.

Many view this as a life-changing opportunity and suggest that Osimhen should follow in the footsteps of his Super Eagles teammate, Odoin Ighalo Hilal, who successfully embraced a similar deal.

If Osimhen decides to join the Saudi Pro League side, he could potentially earn a staggering €52 million annually.

Reports from Sky Sports reveal that Al Hilal has also offered €140 million as a transfer fee to Napoli.

However, it appears that both the player and Napoli have rejected the offer, as per Italian outlet Il Mattino. Napoli is reportedly seeking a transfer fee of €150 million for Osimhen.

Al Hilal’s interest in Osimhen comes after their unsuccessful attempt to sign Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.

Nonetheless, the lucrative offer for Osimhen remains a significant proposition for the Nigerian forward and has sparked discussions on social media about his potential move.

  • Wait till your child dies, then you can show us how to mourn – Judy Austin to critics

Yul Edochie’s second wife, Judy Austin, has strongly responded to Nigerians criticizing her husband’s mourning process for his first son.

In a recent video, Judy expressed her frustration and lambasted those who accused Yul of moving on too quickly after the passing of Kamibilichukwu Edochie.

The couple has been facing ongoing criticism since their marriage, and the loss of Yul’s son has only intensified the negative attention.

Judy firmly asserted that Yul should be allowed to mourn his son in his own way, without judgment or interference.

She went on to defend her husband, emphasizing that false information and lies will not bring him down, and he will continue to prosper in all his endeavors.

Judy’s message was clear: she will fiercely protect her family’s reputation and won’t hesitate to confront anyone who seeks to harm them.

In conclusion, Judy Austin reminded the critics to empathize with Yul’s grief and urged them to imagine how they would mourn if they were in his shoes before passing judgment.

She wrote: “Come for me and I’ll come for you 10 times, come for Yul and I’ll come for you one thousand times. Wait till your own child dies, then you can show us how to mourn.”

We want to see more Africans setting records – Guinness

Guinness World Records (GWR) is encouraging more Africans to emulate Nigerians in their pursuit of breaking records.

However, they emphasize the importance of registering their attempts and adhering to the rules.

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in record-breaking endeavors, sparked by chef Hilda Baci’s four-day cook-a-thon, which was officially recognized by GWR.

According to GWR’s editor-in-chief, Craig Glenday, his organization has received a staggering 1,572 applications from Nigerians for record attempts since chef Hilda’s feat gained widespread attention.

People have been crying non-stop, massaging non-stop and frying huge amounts of snails, among other things – all in an effort to get recognition.

“I really like it when people are passionate about record-breaking,” Mr Glenday said.

“We definitely want to see more people from Africa generally setting records – it’s a good thing.”

But he added that GWR wants to be notified first so they can assess the record attempt and see if it is measurable and establish the rules.

Mr Glenday said 95% of record attempts get rejected.

Stop tagging skit makers as yahoo boys and ritualists – Nasty Blaq

Nigerian skit maker, Abisi Emmanuel Ezechukwu, also known as Nasty Blaq, has responded to the issue of some Nigerians labeling successful skit makers as fraudsters or ritualists.

On his Insta-story, Nasty Blaq indicated that while fans enjoy watching skits, they often had an issue with skit makers enjoying luxurious lifestyles.

He pointed out the double standards, where musicians can acquire expensive assets within a short time of becoming popular without facing criticism, while skit makers are judged for achieving similar success over a slightly longer period.

Nasty Blaq stressed that skit makers work hard for their accomplishments, and people should appreciate their efforts without making baseless accusations of illegal activities.

Nasty Blaq wrote: “I don’t understand how somebody do skit for over 5 years and finally e buy car, you open your mouth say na ritual and yahoo.

“Seyi Vibez never reach one year wey e blow e don buy house/car and everybody congratulate the guy. Skit maker do the same thing in 3-4 years una go say na yahoo and ritual.”

During a recent appearance on the Drink Champs podcast hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Senegalese-American singer Akon praised Nigerians, calling them arguably the “smartest people” in the world.

He mentioned that Nigeria has been producing a significant number of billionaires, surpassing any other country globally.

However, Akon also acknowledged that there are a few “bad apples” who have contributed to tarnishing the country’s image. He emphasized that despite the presence of these individuals, Nigerians’ intelligence is undeniable, and they possess an exceptional level of intelligence.

suggested that some of these “bad apples” may have misdirected their intelligence, leading to negative outcomes.

“If they were to gear that towards something more positive or productive… Because the ones that did, there’s more billionaires being made in Nigeria than anywhere in the world.”

  • Nigerians in a”record-a-thon” craze for Guinness World Record

Nigerians in a”record-a-thon” craze for Guinness World Record

As you delve into this article, it’s highly likely that yet another Nigerian is embarking on a quest to establish a new Guinness World Record, adding to the ongoing frenzy that has captivated Africa’s most populous nation.

Keeping track of the multitude of recent attempts is a challenge in itself. From a remarkable 200-hour singing marathon to a continuous crying endeavor currently underway, and from a determined woman’s quest to set the longest indoor stay record to a captivating attempt at frying the most snails among several culinary-themed endeavors, the “record-a-thon” craze showcases the diversity of Nigerian aspirations and their eagerness to leave an indelible mark in the world of records.

You can pinpoint the exact moment when some of the country’s 200 million people seemingly decided that every world record must fall – a medium-sized crowd braved rain and darkness for four days in May at a swanky venue in Lagos to watch Hilda Baci, a tired-looking chef, cook her way into the record books.

She cooked for a total of 100 hours, and although it was officially logged at 93 hours 11 minutes by the Guinness World Record (GWR), it was still enough to set a new record.

Since then, no day has passed without the now familiar sight of a digital clock on a dark screen signalling that someone, or a couple, is attempting a new world record.

Even GWR is struggling to keep up, after basking in the initial swell of attention as Nigerians keenly followed Ms Baci’s feat.

“Please enough of the record-a-thons,” the organisation humorously tweeted on Tuesday after someone broached the idea of not one, but two separate attempts – an “idea-a-thon” and a “puff-puff-a-thon”.

A woman holding up a Guinness World Record plaque
Hilda Baci sparked the craze by setting a cooking record in May

This followed a previous GWR tweet saying that people should first apply before attempting to set a record. The “polite reminder” was seen as a cheeky dig at Nigerians after a masseuse collapsed while aiming to set a new record for the longest time spent massaging non-stop.

That attempt was now abandoned, she said, adding that her 50 hours was enough for the record, even though she didn’t apply to Guinness.

It is the same bravado that has marked the recent wave, with people boldly announcing their attempts without applying to GWR and not sticking to the rules.

Two chefs turned off their stoves and went to sleep during their attempts, which disqualified them.

“To avoid disappointment, it is important to ensure that what you want to attempt is a valid record title and that you understand the guidelines,” a GWR representative told the BBC.

They said the organisation had seen a spike in applications from Nigerians but could not confirm if the number of attempts from one country itself constituted a record.

    A woman frying
Farominiyi Kemi will need a bigger fryer for her record puff-puff attempt

“Nigerians are funny people and we tend to ride on the wave of whatever is happening at the moment. In less than three months the craze would die down,” said Farominiyi Kemi, the double-attempter who broke the patience of Guinness.

The idea of two attempts was a joke, she told the BBC, but frying a record number of puff-puff – a soft round deep-fried dough like a donut – has now taken firm root in her mind.

One man who is definitely taking his attempt seriously is secondary school teacher John Obot, who is going for the longest time reading aloud in September.

He has obtained approval from GWR and is rehearsing towards crushing the current record of 124 hours set last year in Turkey by Rysbai Isakov of Kyrgyzstan.

Mr Obot aims to read aloud non-stop for 140 hours in the peaceful coastal city of Uyo in southern Nigeria.

“The motivation is to promote reading culture in Nigeria,” he said, leaving no doubt about his capability during a short call in which it was hard to get a word in edgeways.

“I decided to choose a record that is meaningful,” he added, taking a swipe at other attempts, including one for the most coconuts dehusked only using teeth.

“Of what value is that record, or the people that want to kiss?” asked Mr Obot, who proclaimed his attempt superior just for the Nigerian and English classics he would be reading on the day.

    Man crying
Tembu Ebere says he is crying for African youths to show them there is no limit

That kissing attempt has – disappointingly for some – been banned in Ekiti state where it was planned, with authorities warning all involved that there would be consequences if they went ahead with their attempt to set a record for kissing non-stop. GWR removed this category after people collapsed during previous attempts (outside Nigeria).

“[The] ‘kiss-a-thon’ as an event is not only absurd, immoral, unhealthy [but] capable of denigrating the image of Ekiti,” a statement from the culture ministry said.

Ekiti is closely associated with the recent craze as it was there that chef Dammy, while the steam was still rising in chef Baci’s kitchen and Guinness was yet to ratify her record, turned on her stove to try and outdo her fellow countrywoman.

The physical strain of some of the attempts, as seen with the masseuse, is also a slight cause for worry.

Tembu Ebere, who is crying non-stop for seven days, says he’s experienced serious health issues, telling the BBC he has had headaches, a swollen face, went partially blind for 45 minutes and has puffed eyes.

“I had to restrategise and reduce my wailing,” he said, adding that he was determined to see it through so is now sobbing towards his target, even though he has not applied to GWR so it won’t be an official record.

Many Nigerians who find the slew of attempts cringeworthy say Ms Baci unlocked Pandora’s box.

And it is not as though the country is short of record holders:

    • Tobi Amusan – Women’s 100 metres hurdles
    • Gbenga Ezekiel – Most skips in a minute on one leg

    and my personal favourite:

    • Chinonso Eche, who holds records for: most consecutive football touches in one minute while balancing a football on the head; fastest time to 1,000 football touches while balancing a ball on the head; most football headers in a prone position in one minute and most football touches in a seated position while balancing a ball on the head in one minute.

But none of those generated as much buzz as chef Baci, who had a huge publicity machinery behind her.

“We did a lot of background work,” said Nene Bejide, head of the public relations firm that handled the branding.

It yielded results on the day – Ms Baci had a call from the former vice-president, a visit from the Lagos state governor, record holder Amusan stopped by, as did a never-ending stream of celebrities and well-wishers.

Aside from the stardom and fame that an attempt garners – seen through an instant swell of social media followers that elevates one to influencer status, a digital currency these days – there is also the personal enrichment.

Ms Baci has been given a year’s free travel by a Nigerian airline among other endorsements, chef Dammy received cash gifts. Others have openly solicited donations during their attempts.

“I had to do something that is basically out of the ordinary to put myself on the map, to put Nigeria on the map,” Ms Baci told the BBC after her feat.

It would seem she has done both.

  • Nigerians welcome student loans but questions linger

Nigerians welcome student loans but questions linger

Nigerians in the nation’s capital, Abuja, tell the international media that while they support President Bola Tinubu’s new student loan bill, they have concerns about how it would really be implemented.

The new policy, which the president signed into law on Monday, offers financial support for poorer students in higher education by enabling them to easily get interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to cover tuition fees.

However, students could face two years imprisonment or a 500,000 naira ($1,000; £790) fine if they default on repayments once eligible to do so.

“I think it’s a very good idea and it’s going to help students,” one young woman tells the BBC, adding that people should not just “collect loan and relax”, referencing the strict rules regarding repayment or jail time.

One student says the policy is good as fees have increased exponentially.

However his “biggest worry is how the policy will be driven to a logical conclusion”, because Nigeria struggles to execute good policies, he says.

Beneficiaries of the loan are expected to start repayment as soon as they gain employment, following the completion of their studies and mandatory national service.

Most have requested anonymity or, like Zeinab, used a pseudonym for fear of reprisals against them and others.

Both Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and the RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, have accused their enemies of such attacks.

And human rights lawyer Jehanne Henry said that indeed both sides have committed “notorious acts of sexual violence” in the past.

The governmental Combating Violence Against Women and Children Unit documented 49 assaults in the first two weeks of the war.

In all but six cases, survivors identified perpetrators “in RSF uniform,” said unit chief Sulaima Ishaq al-Khalifa, adding that there are “new reports night and day.”

    No woman is safe

“There is not a single woman in Khartoum now who feels safe, not even in her own home,” al-Khalifa said.

The worst fighting has raged in Khartoum and the Darfur region, where former autocratic leader Omar al-Bashir once unleashed the notorious Janjaweed militia from which the RSF emerged.

In their scorched-earth campaign since 2003, they committed genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, including rape, according to the International Criminal Court.

Now mass rapes are again being reported in Darfur, said Adjaratou Ndiaye, the U.N. Women representative in Sudan.

Documented cases, like wider casualty counts, are likely “the tip of the iceberg,” said a Sudanese Women Rights Action group researcher.

Medics say many victims receive no care as hospitals have been ransacked or destroyed.

Many cases have been reported by civil society groups known as resistance committees, which long campaigned for democracy.

A lawyer who has long documented sexual assaults by security forces, said the scourge now impacts “every segment of Sudanese society.”

“We have seen the rape of young girls and old women, mothers with their children,” she said, adding that to the perpetrators “it doesn’t matter.”

Amid dire shortages, health workers have struggled to provide HIV medication or emergency contraceptives.

“The situation is catastrophic,” said a member of the Central Committee of Sudanese Pharmacists.

Activists and medics are trying to document every attack. The aim, said the lawyer, is “to ensure there is no impunity.”

Zeinab hopes the rapists will one day face justice but voices resignation.

“I shared my testimony to try and stop this happening to others, to tell them the road isn’t safe,” she said. “But even when I filed the police report, I knew nothing would come of it. They’re never going to get the men who did this.”

21 Nigerians lost their lives each day over insecurity during Buhari’s government

Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has revealed that twenty-one Nigerians were killed per day as a result of insecurity.

Despite being a former General and coming to power in 2015 with a key promise to curing Nigeria’s rising insecurity, Buhari leaves behind a mixed legacy in terms of insecurity-related deaths.

Buhari left office on May 29, with reported deaths rising from insecurity as tracked by the Nigeria Security Tracker, NST, showing that a total of 63,111 people lost their lives under Buhari’s 8 years in charge – he spent a total of 2,905 days as president.

It is the number of deaths divided by the days spent in office that comes up to the 21 deaths per day.

Foreign students in UK to be banned from bringing families along

This week, rules prohibiting the entry of family members of overseas students are anticipated to be announced in the UK.

The move follows reports that net migration into the UK has hit 1 million with Tory MPs asking Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “to get a grip on the rocketing numbers”.

UK current immigration law permits dependants to accompany their spouses or parent(s) who have a valid student visa.

According to the report, UK ministers are expected to announce the immigration clampdown on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The ban will affect all master’s students and some other post-graduates, but it will not apply to PhD students who are highly skilled and whose courses last between 3 to 5 years.

If implemented, the crackdown will affect many Nigerian students hoping to pursue their postgraduate studies in the UK, as they accounted for the highest increase in the number of dependants accompanying persons with study visas in 2022.

The Times (UK) had also reported in February that the UK was nursing the ban and that Sunak and Suella Braverman, the home secretary, were becoming more concerned after a near-eightfold rise in the number of family members joining foreign students.

media reports had reported how the home secretary considered reforming the graduate visa route.

Under her proposal, foreign students would have to obtain a work visa by getting a skilled job or leave the UK within six months after the end of their studies.

Collect their money but vote your conscience, Buhari tells Nigerians

In Daura on Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari advised Nigerians to accept the bribes offered by politicians rather than succumbing to them and cast their ballots in accordance with their moral convictions.

The President made this known in a chat with journalists after casting his vote at Ward A, Sarkin Yara Polling Unit, 003 in Daura, Katsina State.

He also said the new naira policy has ensured a shortage of naira notes that would have been used by unscrupulous elements to influence the outcome of the elections in their favour.

“I am aware that the money is not there like before for people to sway voters like they used to do.

“And if they bring out money now, the people should pocket it, and still vote their conscience,” he said.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Saturday titled ‘Nigerians know we mean what we say, they will vote for us again, says President Buhari.’

According to Buhari, the electorate should follow their conscience in choosing the right leaders, both state executives and legislatures.

He affirmed that his regime had “diminished” the era of vote buying.

The President also commended the role of the media in empowering people with information on their rights and providing a platform for voters to challenge leaders on promises and records, therefore, deepening democratic culture and awareness among Nigerians.read moreTribune Online5hslide-imageslide-imageslide-imageLagosDecides2023: APC’s Sanwo-Olu votes, kicksagainst voters intimidationRedeem your image by conducting credible governorship- election- —TMG- to- INEC-Share Story

“The media is doing very well in creating awareness and enabling the right conversation. You can hear the tough questions for leaders during interviews on TV, radio and other platforms, and the journalists always press for answers,” the President noted.

On the outcomes of the Governorship and State of Assembly elections, he expressed confidence that they will favour the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country as Nigerians know the party “means what it says, and says what it means.”

The President noted that he was not surprised at the results of the Presidential elections on February 25, 2023, which saw Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerging as President-elect, since the APC campaigns were thorough and detailed.

“I am sure we are going to win, again,” he said.

Buhari urged the electorate to follow their conscience in choosing the right leaders, both state executives and legislatures, admonishing that the era of vote buying had been diminished.

“I am aware that the money is not there like before for people to sway voters like they used to do. And if they bring out money now, the people should pocket it, and still vote their conscience,” he said.

The President noted that the APC followed the constitutional procedure for the entire electoral process, choosing a party Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, who had served as a two-term Governor in Nasarawa State, and legislator in the Senate, with experience that will secure the electoral value and relevance of the party.

“Nigerians trust us because we mean what we say and say what we mean. We have maintained that trust. We told Nigerians that we will work for them, and we have done our best in education and health facilities, and Nigerians appreciate our efforts,’’ he said.

Buhari’s family members and aides also voted at the ward.

He listed these values as being dedication, perseverance, tolerance, flexibility, and commitment.

Oba Owoniyi said this in a letter of congratulations he sent to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on his election.

The monarch, who said he wrote on behalf of the traditional rulers and the entire people of Okunland said the people of the area were delighted at Tinubu’s success at the polls which he said was evidence of a general appreciation of his contributions to the struggle against military dictatorship and the enthronement of sustainable democracy in Nigeria.

Tinubu’s emergence as President-elect, the Obaro said, had reassured Nigerians that the nation would indeed be entering into the realm of renewed hope and the onset of genuine efforts at rebuilding the fallen walls of the nation.

Oba Owoniyi, who assured the President-elect of the loyalty and unflinching support of the traditional rulers and the people of Okunland, prayed that God would grant him the strength and good health he needed to pilot the nation’s affairs.

  • I shall be a fair leader to all – Tinubu tells Nigerians

I shall be a fair leader to all – Tinubu tells Nigerians

All Nigerians have recieved a promise from president-elect, President-elect Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that regardless of their party affiliations, citizens would smile under his leadership.

In his acceptance speech, delivered at the office of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on Wednesday morning, he made the commitment.

Along with Vice-President-elect Senator Kashim Shettima, Tinubu is scheduled to pick up his Certificate of Return today from the Independent National Electoral Commission Collation Centre within the International Convention Centre.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC and Chief Return Officer for the presidential election, announced Tinubu as the winner early on Wednesday morning after he had met all legal requirements.

The President elect in a prepared speech titled, ” The Era of Renewed Hope,” commended the “INEC  for running a free and fair election. “

Acknowledging irregularities in the process, the President elect assured Nigerians that the electoral process would witness appreciable improvement with time.

“We commend INEC for running a free and fair election. The lapses that did occur were relatively few in number and were immaterial to the final outcome.  With each cycle of elections, we steadily perfect this process so vital to our democratic life.

“Today, Nigeria stands tall as the giant of Africa. It shines even brighter as the continent’s biggest democracy.”

Commending other presidential candidates for believing in democracy, Tinubu who maintained that he would be  willing to run an inclusive government however cautioned aggrieved candidates and their supporters to abandon the streets and seek legal recourse in the Court of law.

“I  am grateful to Almighty God. By His mercy, I was born a son of Nigeria and through His sublime purpose I find myself the victor of this election. May He grant me the wisdom and courage to lead the nation to the greatness He alone has destined for it.

“Finally, I thank the Nigerian people for their abiding belief in our democracy. I shall be a fair leader to all Nigerians. I will be in tune with your aspirations, charge up your energies and harness your talents to deliver a nation that we can be proud of.

“To my fellow candidates, former VP Atiku, former governor Kwankwaso, former governor Obi and all others, I extend the hand of friendship. This was a competitive, high-spirited campaign.

    “You have my utmost respect.

“Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance.

“During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy.  In my heart, you are my brothers.

“Still, I know some candidates will be hard put to accept the election results. It is your right to seek legal recourse. What is neither right nor defensible is for anybody to resort to violence. Any challenge to the electoral outcome should be made in a court of law, and not in the streets.

“I also ask my supporters to let peace reign and tensions fade. We ran a principled, peaceful and progressive campaign. The aftermath of our campaign must be as benign.

“Yes, there are divisions amongst us that should not exist. Many people are uncertain, angry and hurt; I reach out to every one of you. Let the better aspects of our humanity step forward at this fateful moment. Let us begin to heal and bring calm to our nation.”

Whether you are Batified or articulated, Obedient, or Kwanhasia, you voted for a better Nigeria. You decided to place your trust in the democratic vision of a Nigeria funded on a shared basis. Renewed hope has dawned and landed in Nigeria.

I represent and I promise, and with your support, I know that promise will be fulfilled.

I commend INEC for running a credible election, no matter what anyone says.

We should be proud of this.

Don’t jolt that because you did not win the election.
Be helpful to our integrity, Character and reputation
We have created the biggest democracy as Nigerians.

I thank President for supporting my campaign. He is indeed a true Patriot. I must thank his wife and his entire family for being committed, patriotic, loyal and firm.

I also thank my running mate and vice President-elect- Senator Kashim Shettima, who is also a former governor, who is also from Borno and a strong pillar of support.
I remember Faleke, an elder and committed and dependable.

To the progressive Governors of the party and the party leadership and loyal members, you have the opportunity to betray your party, in spite of the cashless policy, some of you still owe party agents. But despite this, you delivered victory to your Party. There is no way I can ever intentionally let you down. I owe you a debt of gratitude to the entire women’s campaign organisations who polled the highest number of voters.

He officially accepts to be the servant of the country and not the leader. To work and make Nigeria a great country. I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to team up together. It is the only nation we have and only one country that we must build together and we must work together to put broken pieces together.

We must not act like an orchestra that has no direction from a conductor. We have elected a conductor, as the President-Elect. Let’s collaborate to make a symphony of progress. We have what it takes and what is needed-knowledge, creativity, the mind, determination. We are the same country performing wonders in other countries, we can do it here. I promise I will work with you to make Nigeria a destination for returning home to contribute to the great country of Nigeria.

The Youths, I hear you loud and clear, whatever the course, we are going to chart the path together. We are going to embark on this journey together, united. No one is too small to be creative. Insha Allah.

We will work together and I will pay undivided attention to your education. We will be creative and provide credits and education loans. Four years course will be four years course and no more strike. Your universities will have the autonomy to upgrade your syllabuses. I know where it pains. And believe me, you will see the reward of your election.

Nigerians in Ghana settle on Peter Obi as President of Nigeria

A section of Nigerians living in Ghana have expressed massive support for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to become president at the end of the 2023 election.

During an interaction with The Independent Africa, on Friday February 2023, all the Nigerians reached out to said they are not expecting anyone to win apart from Peter Obi.

Expressing the reason for their choice, some said they are positive he will make the “New Nigeria” mantra a reality, while the others said it is about time an Ibo man is given the opportunity to make Nigeria a reformed country.

” I expect that my brother, the Ibo man, Peter Obi will win because he is 90/60. No Ibo man has for once ruled Nigeria. So this time is our time and everyone knows that it is the time for the Ibo people to rule Nigeria.” Anyone apart from him will bring war” One Emeka expressed.

The jeans trouser vendor asserted that there will be civil unrest in Nigeria if Peter Obi does not emerge President.

Chenedu also said that he hopes for a free and fair election despite the possibility that the process will turn bloody and hectic. However “we already know who is going to be on the seat. Peter Obi, I wish him good luck.”

Mr Chika, also expressed his stance and said “my expectation is nothing much because we have taken the decision. We want Peter Obi to win. If he not going to do well we will change our mind because want a government that will deliver. If you could see they came with broom. The other one came with umbrella, but when you see Peter Obi’s logo its about family and during his campaign he was able to go round uniting the people and that what am expecting for the “New Nigeria.”

Okechukwu, not his real name, mentioned that Nigerians have been denied the privilege of enjoying good roads, electricity and water for a long time because the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All People’s Congress (APC) have done nothing about the situation.

Thus he is optimistic that Peter Obi will change their misfortune into great fortunes.

“PDP and APC have ruled us for a long time but there is nothing good coming about them. Now I am in Ghana enjoying good roads, water and electricity but we don’t have all these in Nigeria and that is why we need a better government. I beleive God will do it for someone like Peter Obi.”

Nigeria, the most populous country in West Africa, and currently the seventh most populous in the world is a federal republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, where the capital, Abuja, is located.

The country has a history that keeps recurring on violence, chaos, fighting, killings, kidnappings among others during elections.

It does not come as a surprise that some of the Nigerians here in Ghana are predicting civil unrest if the election results are rigged and Peter Obi does not become President.

  • Voting still continues even after polls were closed in Nigeria’s presidential elections

Voting still continues even after polls were closed in Nigeria’s presidential elections

How are elections held with almost 93 million voters?
It turns out with a lot of trouble, headaches, delays, and technological problems.

In Africa’s largest democratic exercise, some Nigerians continued to cast ballots more than 24 hours after polls closed.

Nigeria has 176,606 polling locations, and voting took place without incident in the majority of them.

However, it was overshadowed by numerous reports of errors, difficulties with the technology, as well as assaults and voter intimidation at certain polling places.

A CNN team in Lagos saw voters still trying to find a way to cast their ballot Sunday at a school in Lagos where two polling units didn’t get to vote in Saturday’s elections.

In the capital Abuja, voting continued until late on Saturday, as voters used car headlights to help themselves see.

When a CNN team visited some polling units, dozens of voters were still waiting to cast their ballot. In parts of Lagos, voting went on well into midnight.

The election is one of the most hotly contested contests since the end of military dictatorship in 1999, and the two-party system that has dominated Nigerian politics since then is facing an unprecedented threat.

The frontrunners are Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling APC party, Atiku Abubakar from the PDP and Peter Obi from the lesser-known Labour Party.

Obi, 61, has gained in popularity and is seen as the third force candidate that could emerge as leader.

Many of his supporters, mostly first time voters, who registered in huge numbers to vote, complained of attempts to suppress their vote.

At one polling unit in Lekki, Lagos, several people were attacked.

Dr. Chidi Nwagwu told CNN: “I arrived at around 10am. Polling materials were late and we set up to start voting. Some thugs arrived and started hitting people with chairs. I was hit several times with a chair. There was a doctor who helped us. A lot of women were attacked, including a pregnant woman. She was knocked to the ground and they smashed her phone.”

Alicia Gberikon said: “There was harassment and if you had a phone that was a crime. People were beaten and had their phones smashed. It was very scary.”

Yiaga Africa, a non-profit civic group that deployed 3,836 observers across the country said it was disappointed with the elections. “There’s a sense of disappointment, quite frankly, with the way this process has gone. Clearly, we’ve not overcome and resolved, perennially our logistical challenges with elections,” Samson Itodo, Yiaga’s Executive Director told CNN.

This was supposed to be the year that the electoral commission would provide real-time results via its new portal, iReV.

Yiaga said it was concerned that as of Saturday 10pm local time, when results were known from thousands of polling units, they had not been uploaded to the electoral commission’s voting portal.

“It raises a lot of questions about the entire process because it deviates from the guidelines for the elections. But it also casts doubt on the integrity of this entire process,” Itodo said.

“To make matters worse, the commission is not speaking or has not spoken to Nigerians.”

The chairman of the electoral commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu briefly addressed the country at a media briefing on Sunday where he explained the collation process but did not address the issues around results transmission.

Yakubu reported there were pockets of violence across the country and electoral machines known as Bimodal Voter Accreditation system (BVAS) were lost in some of those disruptions.

Nigeria elections 2023: Jonathan wishes Nigerians peaceful election

Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, today prayed that Nigerians who are eligible to vote experience a peaceful election that is free from violence and rigging, even as voting commenced very late at his polling unit 39, ward 13, in his country home, Otuoke Community of Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

Dr. Jonathan who voted about 12 noon due to delay in the arrival of material, a situation that also affected other parts of the state, said he was was worried when he got to his polling unit at 8:30am and did not meet any INEC official or see election materials.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after casting his vote, Jonathan said “let me thank all of you that are involve in the electoral process on the election day, the inec staff, media people, the security and the government, sometimes things seem so easy but practically is a bit difficult and I am happy that I voted, I was a bit worried when I got here at 8:30 and there was nobody and this is almost to 12 and I have voted .

“Election has commenced in this polling unit, which means we have tried. We have started election and my wish for Nigeria is for us to conduct a peaceful election, and for us who are politicians, our conduct matters a lot. And I always tell politicians, the means you can use to win election is not violence.

“When you use violence to win election or buying votes, when you do that, you are simply behaving like an arm robber or a con man who rather makes money through robbery. The irony is that everybody will know that you are a con man, a con man who makes money through deceiving people.

For me, politicians are suppose to be decent members of the society, so we must conduct ourselves decently both supporters, relatives and friends. We must understand that it is our duty to make politics a clean business, so that people can be free to voters the candidate they prefer.

“My plea is that politicians should realize that the whole world is looking at us and so many senior global citizens are in Nigeria because of this election, and they want us to succeed, So, we must not fail.”
