Nima Market fire: Affected traders to receive GHS5K each from Baba Jamal

Traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Nima Market are expected to receive GH¢5,000 each from the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, in the coming days to help them revive their businesses.

On Tuesday, May 12, Baba Jamal visited the scene to assess the situation and commiserate with the affected traders. Addressing the media, Baba Jamal urged the government to support the construction of an ultra-modern market for residents and traders in the constituency.

He added, “Seeing that this is a serious tragedy that has affected our people last night, my MCE and NADMO officials all rushed here and were able to help. But you can see that some serious devastation has taken place. I want to send my heartfelt sympathies to the people who have lost their wares, and also to all the people who are in this market.

“I call on the government, our president, and the entire nation to come and assist in these difficult times. A few people who have been affected, they have given me their list. And so on my own, I want to offer GH¢5,000 to each of the victims in the interim.”

On Monday night, May 11, at about 11:20 p.m, the intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service saved parts of the Nima Market following a fire outbreak. In a brief update shared on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, May 12,  the Service noted that the fire destroyed goods and properties belonging to traders.

The latest incident has once again amplified concerns about the recurring market fires in parts of Accra, with traders repeatedly suffering heavy financial losses.

Earlier in January, a large fire swept through sections of the Madina Market in Accra, triggering a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service as efforts continue to contain the blaze.

The GNFS, in a Facebook update, said fire appliances from the Madina and Legon stations were dispatched to the market shortly after the incident was reported.

Fire officers are working under difficult conditions to control the flames, with heavy smoke spreading across the busy trading area.

While the exact scale of destruction has not yet been determined, early indications point to damage to several stalls and their merchandise. In response, traders and nearby residents have been moved away from the affected areas, as security personnel restrict access to parts of the market to enable firefighters to carry out their operations.

Authorities have not yet established the cause of the fire and will begin investigations once the situation is fully under control.

In the same area, an inferno destroyed several makeshift wooden and metal structures used for both commercial and residential purposes at Madina Washing Bay near Redco Flat on Sunday evening, August 3.

The blaze destroyed utility poles, traders’ wares, personal belongings, and an unspecified number of structures worth several thousand cedis, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.

In a Facebook post, the Fire Service noted that while battling the inferno, one of its firefighters sustained a minor leg injury.

The Ghana National Fire Service noted that it received the distress call at 12:36 hours and responded swiftly, with the first crew from Madina Fire Station arriving within 4 minutes at 12:40 hours to confront the fully developed fire.

Also, four (4) fire engines from Legon, Abelempke, and GNFS Headquarters joined the operation to contain the blaze. According to the GNFS, thanks to the timely and coordinated efforts, the fire was confined at 13:42 hours and fully brought under control at 13:54 hours.

Overhaul operations continued until 20:50 hours, with firefighters salvaging multiple adjoining structures and their contents. Investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.

Last month, a fire outbreak occurred at Madina Ritz Junction. It was earlier reported that a 2-month-old baby died as a result of the fire incident. However, GNFS, in a Facebook post on July 17, said that after engaging with some victims, particularly women, they confirmed that no lives were lost.

“A verification team was dispatched to the scene this morning, and after engaging affected residents, particularly the women, and a Unit Committee Member of the area, the Service can confirm that no lives were lost.”

The Fire Service has thus entreated the public and media outlets to “disregard any reports suggesting otherwise, as they are inaccurate and misleading,” adding that it remains firmly committed to public safety, emergency responsiveness, and transparent communication.”

The fire began after a gas explosion in one of the shops and quickly spread to adjacent containers, consuming everything in its path.

The incident, which involved multiple wooden structures used for both residential and commercial purposes, was fully contained through the swift and professional response of firefighters from the Madina, Legon, and Abelemkpe Fire Stations.

An investigation by the Service was launched to ascertain the cause of the fire, which destroyed several properties. It is yet to be reported the cause of the fire.

In April this year, a raging fire ripped through the Madina Redco Flats area, reducing more than 150 structures to ashes and claiming the life of a young Nigerian woman.

The inferno, which began around 11:15 p.m., rapidly spread across 140 wooden kiosks and 20 metal containers that served as homes and business outlets.

Though firefighters from the Madina Fire Station arrived on the scene within two minutes, the blaze had already intensified. One fatality was recorded—a Nigerian woman affectionately known in the area as Beauty.

Believed to be in her early twenties, she was trapped in her room and could not escape. Her charred remains were retrieved and handed over to the Madina Police for preservation and further investigation.

Last year, about 50 stalls were burnt to ashes after the Madina Market in Accra caught fire. Deputy Director of Operations at the Ghana National Fire Service, D.O.1. Kofi Forson, who engaged the media, recounted the challenges the firefighters faced in quenching the flame.

“It was not easy for us and there was a lack of access to where the fire was spreading and because it happened in the night, the shops were closed and we had to break through and that made it tedious,” he said.

In the first half of the year, the Ghana National Fire Service has reported a marginal increase in fire outbreaks. A comparison of data from January to June last year and that of this year’s first six months indicates that Ghana recorded 3,595 fire cases.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, that is about 19 more cases than the 3,576 cases recorded during the same time in 2024, a sharp increase in cases representing a 0.53% rise.

The monthly breakdown of fire cases reported this year is as follows: January (964), February (678), March (619), April (483), May (457), and June (394).

The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of fire incidents, with 628 cases, followed by the Ashanti Region with 581 cases and the Central Region with 408. The North East Region reported the lowest number of incidents—just 10.

Head of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Desmond Ackah, revealed that due to their improved and swift response to fire cases, they were able to save over GH¢203 million worth of properties.

Fire outbreaks across the country in the first half of 2025 led to the destruction of properties valued at over GH¢188 million.

Top causes of fire incidents, according to the Ghana National Fire Service, include electrical faults through illegal connections, poor wiring, and overloading of circuits; improper use of electrical appliances, such as overused extension cords and unattended devices.

Also, unattended cooking, especially with gas, electric, or coal-based stoves. Careless use of naked flames like candles, mosquito coils, lighters, and matches, gas leakages, and poor handling of LPG cylinders are also responsible for fire incidents in the country.

  • Report cites Makola, Agbogbloshie among five polluted hotspots in Accra

Report cites Makola, Agbogbloshie among five polluted hotspots in Accra

Improved air quality monitoring in Accra has identified Nima, Makola, Agbogbloshie, Chorkor, and Madina Zongo Junction as the top five most polluted areas in the city.

These locations consistently have poor air quality due to soot from open waste burning and vehicle emissions.

Professor Kofi Amegah, the Breathe Accra Project Lead, emphasized that these pollutants and particulates are harmful to human health.

Data collected over four months of monitoring indicated that pollution in these areas exceeded the recommended World Health Organization standards throughout the day.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) categorizes air quality as ideal or good when it falls within the range of 0 to 50. AQI from 51 to 100 is considered moderate, with some health concerns for sensitive individuals, such as children under five.

“For instance, AQI for Agbogbloshie on Wednesday 6th September 2023 was between 150 and 200, which is unhealthy for all groups of people,” Prof Amegah said.

He explained that the deployment of more than 30 sensors was enhancing the capabilities of the Environmental Protection Agency’s monitoring stations. This expansion enabled a broader area of the city to undergo continuous monitoring for air quality.

While the monitoring system has not yet reached the international best practice of having sensors within every five-mile radius, the upgraded monitoring infrastructure provides real-time data on air quality. This real-time data aids in investigations to identify the sources and causes of pollution, facilitating remedial actions.

Regarding green spaces, Professor Amegah shared findings from a recent study he conducted. The study revealed a significant decline in green spaces, which include tree cover, grassy areas, and parks. These green spaces act as the “lungs of the city” and have considerably diminished over the past two decades.

“These greens purified the air, but we have removed almost all. We need to act fast by planting trees before it is too late,” he cautioned.

Mr Alex Johnson, the Head of Transport, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said: “There is a high concentration of pollutants wherever there is high population and high volume of vehicular traffic at the same time.”

“As vehicles move slowly, fuel burning becomes inefficient resulting in high emissions of air pollutants. Also, open burning of waste in these areas is quite common, so I’m not surprised at the results of the monitored data.”

He emphasized that various groups, including market women, traders, “truck pushers,” head porters (kayayei), patrons, drivers, pedestrians, and residents residing in these exposed environments, face an increased risk of developing heart-related diseases and lung cancer over the medium to long term.

Data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for the first half of 2023 revealed that asthma, a condition primarily attributed to poor air quality, ranked as the second most recorded non-communicable disease (NCD). Dr. Efua Commeh, the Acting Programme Manager for Non-Communicable Diseases at GHS, clarified that this data indicated a rising number of people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases like asthma. Pollutants also increased the likelihood of children contracting upper respiratory infections like the flu, which could trigger asthma symptoms.

Inhaling dust and soot particles could result in various health issues, including lung dysfunction, heart diseases, cancer, damage to nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs, potentially leading to premature deaths.

Regarding the health burden, information obtained by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that the National Health Insurance spent approximately US$14,976,000 annually on treating conditions related to NCDs among 500 hospitalized patients.

Desmond Appiah, the Country Lead of Clean Air Fund, reiterated the importance of collaboration among leadership, law enforcement agencies, and the public to maintain clean air. He emphasized that working together and making evidence-based decisions, coupled with targeted actions, would reduce and eventually eliminate waste burning while improving transportation methods.

A shared objective of ensuring clean air for everyone could serve as a catalyst to secure funding and investments in sectors that promote air quality improvements while delivering multiple co-benefits.

  • School building, mechanic shops destroyed; children rendered homeless in Nima demolition exercise

School building, mechanic shops destroyed; children rendered homeless in Nima demolition exercise

Startling revelations have emerged following a recent demolition exercise in Nima, a bustling suburb of Accra, which has sparked accusations of land grabbing against the government.

A Kofi TV report sheds light on the destruction of a school building, a church facility, and a prominent workshop housing over 100 engineers in the area.

The land in question, believed to hold historical significance, was home to a school building, a church facility, and a diverse workshop specializing in various engineering disciplines, including electric welding, electrical mechanics, gas welding, engine repair, and more.

Heartbroken residents returned from work to find their homes and livelihoods reduced to rubble. While acknowledging receipt of evacuation notices, they claim they were left in the dark about the timing of the demolition.

An affected resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, lamented the loss of their livelihoods, stating, “They are now destroying people’s shops. Some of us, this is where we get our daily bread. You did not relocate us, you did not find new jobs for us.” The resident argued that had the land truly belonged to the government, it would have been repurposed for public use long ago.

The workshop, a hub of skilled professionals, was a testament to expertise in various fields, including air conditioning, engine repair, and more. “This place is a fitting shop, with different specialists,” the resident explained. “We had over 30 experts… If I tell you we were not notified, I will be lying. We were notified, and we showed it to the chiefs here.” The account further details a night of disruption, as police and utility officials descended upon the area, disconnecting utilities and leaving residents powerless.

The demolition has taken a toll on the community, particularly its children. Some returned from school to find their homes razed to the ground, leading to tears and bewilderment. Appeals for relocation have reportedly yielded no results.

Kofi TV’s investigation brings to light a significant twist. The government’s alleged plan to incorporate the land into the ambitious “Agenda 111” project, which aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure, has raised eyebrows.

Local residents and chiefs maintain that they were kept in the dark about the government’s intentions, and they question the legality of the land acquisition. Some even speculate that the demolition might be a strategic manoeuvre to seize the land for private interests.

The land’s proximity to the President’s residence, the Nima police station, and the Nima roundabout has added a layer of complexity to the situation. Local chiefs have expressed their anger and concern over the government’s actions, further fuelling suspicions of a hidden agenda.

As this saga unfolds, questions about transparency, accountability, and the rights of long-standing residents loom large.

‘I could’ve disappeared if I wanted to’ – Fetish priest who was arrested during Nima demolition exercise claims

A fetish priest who attempted to stop a demolition exercise in Nima, a suburb of Accra, but was arrested by the police has claimed that he had the power to vanish at the time of his arrest.

However, he said he chose not to do so because the police approached him in a friendly manner and he did not expect to be arrested.

The priest, known as Nii Odiasempa, explained in an interview on Kofi TV that he had a strong ancestral connection to the land in Nima and felt angry when he heard that some structures were being demolished by the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly.

He said he consulted the ancestors and they showed him how to deal with the situation using spiritual practices.

“I took a bottle of schnapps and leaves. When I got there, I called them – I wasn’t going to fight them because if it was about a fight, something bad may have happened because our ancestors have shown us that if there are many stones and you pour wine or water on it, it will burst into flames,” he said.

He added that he wanted to teach the demolition team a lesson but he forgave them because of God. He also revealed that he had the ability to disappear if he wanted to.

“When they called me, I could have vanished, yes, I could have vanished, if I had poured water on the ground, a lot of things would have happened,” he said. “I thought they were giving me respect that I should sit down (in their car) for a discussion but unfortunately when I sat down, they sped off.”

The incident happened on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. The demolition exercise was met with resistance from some residents who protested and even summoned the fetish priest to intervene. The assembly said the exercise was to make way for developmental works in the area.

  • SSNIT hands over $3.2m children’s library to GLA

The $3.2 million Children’s Library initiated and constructed by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to promote education and reading among children, was yesterday handed over to the Ghana Library Authority (GLA).

The facility located at the Airport Residential Area, near Kawukudi Junction in Nima, which started in 2015 was completed last year.

The multi-purpose one-story library, equipped with modern technological equipment to help the visually and hearing impaired also use the facility, is stocked with about 22,000 books.

In addition to the physical library, SSNIT also handed over a mobile library facility to the GLA.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony witnessed by the board members of SSNIT and officials of Ministry of Education and the GLA as well as pupils from schools from Kanda, the Director-General of SSNIT, Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang, said SSNIT had been involved in education over the years.

He said SSNIT started the Students Loan Scheme, which was later handed over to the Students Loans Trust and also financed the construction of students’ hostels and some community schools in some parts of the country.

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang indicated that the state-of-the-art library facility was to help children to learn and discover themselves for the development of the country.

“We believe that we need educated population, in order to get a good workforce, and, therefore, SSNIT this year launched supplementary readers developed in conjunction with the Ghana Education Service, to bring social security education to children at the younger age,” he said.

The Director-General said the supplementary readers would help children to learn about social security and retirement planning.

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang described the facility as ultra-modern because everything about the facility such as registration to use the library as well as searching for books, was computerised.

In addition, he said the library had facilities for the visually and hearing impaired to read and learn, conference rooms, computer room, first aid room and media viewing room.

Asked of the cost of the facility, he said about $3.9 million was budgeted for the project, but between $3.1 and $3.2 million was used to complete the project.

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adu-Twum, in a speech read on his behalf by the Director of Pre-Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Nana Baffour Awuah, said education remained a priority of the government, most importantly, Pre-Tertiary education.

He commended the SSNIT for financing the construction of the Children and Mobile Library for use by children from two years to the pre-tertiary level.

Dr Adu-Twum entreated the GLA to take good care of the facility to benefit the not children around the Airport Residential Area, and the country as a whole.

The Chief Executive Officer of GLA, Hayford Siaw said the new Children and Mobile Library, which had the capacity to serve 169 pupils, brought to 61 new libraries constructed around the country since 2016 and 14 in Greater Accra Region.

  • Nima riot: Residents live in fear after gang leader was granted bail Adib Saani

A Security Analyst, Adib Saani has said some residents in Nima, a suburb of Accra are living in fear after one of the suspected gang leaders, Kumordzi has been granted bail after his arrest.

This is causing fear and panic among the people, Adib Saani told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise show on 3FM Monday, February 21.

“Kumordzi was bailed after his arrest. Some of the inhabitants were even angry because the people who volunteered information are all scared. These guys are back on the street”.

“Some are in the state of shock because after all this drama at Nima-Mamobi some of the culprits have been granted bail,” he said.

On Sunday, February 20 the Police announced the arrest of suspect Ali Awudu, one of the Nima riot Kingpins and leader of the “Bombom gang”.

So far, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and we are still pursuing other members of the gang to bring them to face justice.

  • Cameroon’s main port city battles mounting flood peril

Douala was plunged into darkness, but cries pierced the silent night: the water was rising. Alerted by the neighbours, Hummel put some of his belongings to safety and hurriedly sent the children away. A few minutes later, the blackish liquid invaded the house.

In mid-August, like every year during the rainy season, the informal neighbourhood of Makèpè-Missoké was invaded by water in the heart of Cameroon’s economic capital. Under the effect of global warming, floods are becoming more and more frequent in this port city of more than three million inhabitants, which is constantly expanding.

“Burned-out TV, burned-out refrigerator. Everything is wasted,” sighs Hummel Tsafack, 35.

“As soon as the thunder rumbles, we raise the beds. We are always afraid here. The water comes so quickly,” agrees his neighbour François, in his fifties. He still has a bitter memory of the flood of the summer of 2020 that paralyzed the city and devastated the neighbourhood.

In his small house soaked with humidity, all the household appliances are out of order. On the floor, the concrete is dotted with a few holes. “This place, we’ve already cemented it seven times. Every time it floods, it breaks and we have to start over.”

    Population growth

“We moved here because it was cheaper. We’re not going to move,” he warns. This precarious neighbourhood is in a flood zone that cannot be built on. But residents continue to pile in, driven by the lack of space in a city with a population growth rate of over 5.5% per year.

Each year, nearly 110,000 new city dwellers move into the megalopolis and the gap between supply and demand for available land is growing.

Douala is prone to flooding with nearly 250 km of rivers and heavy rainfall averaging 4,000 mm per year. It is located at the mouth of the Wouri River, on a low coastal plateau, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and is influenced by the tides.

Meteorological data for the last 20 years indicate a decrease in rainfall, which masks an increase in extreme events, and very violent rain episodes, causing flooding.

The temperature of the metropolis is increasing, as it is at the global level. According to the latest report of the UN climate experts (IPCC), coastal cities are in the front line of the climate crisis and risk being “wiped out by long-term flooding” and rising sea levels.

According to the IPCC, floods will displace an average of 2.7 million people in Africa and flood-related costs could increase tenfold by 2050, to $60 billion a year, in the 136 largest coastal cities.

    Plastic waste

In Makèpè-Missoké, plastic waste litters the river. “Look at all the garbage is thrown away by the residents. In addition to this, the soil is silting up and invasive plants are colonizing the riverbed. In case of heavy rains, the water overflows,” explains environmental specialist Didier Yimkwa.

To address the problem, the city has built about 40 kilometres of drains since 2012. Some at-risk, unsanitary and precarious neighbourhoods have also been upgraded to allow access to city services, especially those for waste collection.

But garbage and garbage are everywhere in Douala’s poor neighbourhoods, and the drains are often covered with plastic, preventing water from draining away.

“It is estimated that 30% of waste is lost in nature,” said Dr. Joseph Magloire Olinga, Deputy Director of Studies and Environmental Protection in Douala.

At the same time, another program has developed a hydrometeorological observatory to collect reliable local data on rainfall and prevent the risk of flooding. The participation of the French Development Agency and the World Bank is essential, says Olinga, who is in charge of monitoring the “Douala, sustainable city” project.

“The response is not enough,” he admits, however. “We need a serious alternative in terms of land to accommodate the population. This involves the densification of the city centre, and the construction of high-rise buildings, but some sectors are blocked by real estate developers who have bought the land and no longer want to sell it,” he explains.

Some flood-prone areas also continue to be allocated to real estate projects, which is the responsibility of the state.

In neighbourhoods like Makèpè-Missoké, the goal is to learn to live with the risk of flooding. “But it is certain that some inhabitants for whom the threat is too great will also have to leave,” concludes Mr. Olinga.
