  • My husband was not insecure when I received a car gift from an admirer – Omotola

My husband was not insecure when I received a car gift from an admirer – Omotola

Veteran actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has opened up about trust in her marriage, stating that her husband showed no insecurity after an admirer gifted her a car.

She said on Naija FM, “Women have admirers,” she explained. “Me, who is married, I know how many people have gifted me things, women and men. They’ll just see me and say, ‘Omotola, I’m sending you this.’ They’ve gifted me a car before.”

Responding to the question of whether she attempted to return the gift, Omotola confidently said, “No, why would I return the car?”

She attributed the ease with which such situations are managed to her husband’s self-assurance, noting that he is exceptionally secure in himself.

“Think about it, how would you marry an Omosexy if you’re not secure?” she quipped.

However, the actress rejected suggestions that women do not lead in Nollywood, maintaining that women form the real backbone of the industry.

“Women are the ones who hold Nollywood,” she said, stressing that many female actors are not just performers but also business owners, influencers, producers, and entrepreneurs.

She explained that many actresses she is familiar with operate several businesses in addition to acting, while others also hold full-time jobs.

Last year on social media, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde celebrated two special milestones—her husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde’s birthday and their 29th wedding anniversary.

To mark the occasion, she shared a heartfelt video capturing a tender moment between them.

In the clip, Captain Ekeinde showered her with praises, affectionately calling her Nigeria’s hottest.

Omotola, filled with love and gratitude, wrote a touching tribute to her husband, referring to him as “Big Kohuna” and “HoneyBoy.”

Reflecting on their nearly three decades together, she expressed pride in calling Captain Ekeinde her own, describing him as a humble, joyful, and honorable man.

She also appreciated the years of support, laughter, and peace they have shared, looking forward to many more to come.

Her post has since attracted a wave of congratulations from fans and fellow celebrities, who admire the couple’s enduring love and commitment.

In 2024, she s “Omosexy,”  celebrated her 46th birthday today, February 7, 2024, with joy and gratitude. The celebrated actress shared a heartwarming snapshot from her recent birthday photoshoot on Instagram, accompanied by a thoughtful caption expressing her excitement.

In her post, Omotola reflected on the unpredictable nature of life, stating, “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favour to men of skill. But time and chance happen to them all. Thank you, Lord for +1.”

The actress received an outpouring of congratulations and well-wishes from fans, followers, and fellow celebrities.Actor Chidi Mokeme showered her with praise, saying, “Oh My Goodness!!! Who let this goddess out of the fortress? O’Sexy! Happy Birthday My Love. Keep blazing the trails. Have Fun and Enjoy Ur Moments Queen.”

Other celebrities, including Osas Ighodaro, Chizzy Alicia, and Adesua Etomi, joined in the birthday celebrations with heartfelt messages.

Leading up to her special day, Omotola had been sharing her excitement on social media. On February 4, 2024, she posted a humorous video, exclaiming, “The way I’m looking at Everyone Acting like they Don’t know my Birthday is on the Moses Crossing, 7th of FEBRUARY!!! It’s Aquarius Season! Who’s got Gifts for meh!”

In 2023, Omotola shared the secret of the success of her marriage in an interview with Potpourri and some other news outlets.

Omotola has been married to Captain Matthew Ekeinde for 27 years, having been married at the age of 18. Unlike many of her colleagues who could not hold together in a marriage, Omotola’s has become a model from which many entertainers could borrow a leaf.

She preaches tolerance, submission, and understanding, adding that the greatest mistake a woman can make is to claim equality with her man.

“A woman must know her place and submit to her husband. The greatest mistake a woman can make is wanting to stand shoulder to shoulder with her man. When you show submission your man will respect and adore you for it, she echoes.

Omotola also gave a picture of the understanding that exists between her and her husband, which to many African couples and parents would have seemed inappropriate.

“I always tell people that women are stronger than men, psychologically. Let me tell you something more, my husband is actually the one who goes to the market. I don’t go to the market because I can’t. Because of my status, I can’t. But my husband didn’t say you know traditionally, a man is not supposed to go to the market, I’m not gonna go, no. My husband actually goes to the market, she has revealed much to the disbelief and outrage of so many.

“Earlier in my career, I used to go with him but I’d stay in the car, because our cars are tinted, so I’d stay in the car. But then, one time we went to Tejuosho and someone found out I was in the car. It became a major security risk, so he said don’t ever go with me again. He goes and he has fun and he comes back home, and I do the cooking, so you see we strengthen each other,” she had added.

Omotola had also confessed that not many men would have been able to stand her personality, adding she probably wouldn’t have married if she had not been so lucky to have had somebody like Captain Ekeinde.

She said, “ I don’t think there is a man that can handle me apart from my husband. Not because I am a bad person, it is because I have a very strong personality. I can understand why a lot of female artists find it very difficult to find the right person. When you achieve some kind of success, you become really confused as to who really loves you for who you are. It’s not really easy, you know, so it is very hard finding those people who really love you. If you are not a very grounded person ,you too can contribute in some kind of way to your own problems and so I might have contributed to my own problems.”

“Of course, many men have walked the altar with actresses and oftentimes have found out it is not the heaven it promised to be. The time spent away from home on locations is just too much for some spouses to bear. And so is the limelight that comes with all forms of temptations and vices of life. “

When Omotola was asked if her husband had ever complained about her career, it was another revelation moulded in love and understanding.

“No. Never. When I met him I was already an actress. I wasn’t a big star then, if anything, he was the one even encouraging me. To be honest with you, he’s my biggest movie fan. I don’t even watch most of my own movies, he’s the one who buys and watches them. There’s no one movie of mine he has not bought or watched. He doesn’t just watch them, he frames the posters. Most of the posters he framed them in wood and they are all over the house. The posters are framed into wood,” she told Potpourri in an interview.

Interestingly, the mother of four is fondly called by all as Omosexy. But few know the origin of the name. It is another product of long years of love and romance as the actress also revealed in another past interview.

  • Nollywood actress Allwell Ademola is dead

Nollywood actress Allwell Ademola is dead

Nollywood has lost actress and producer Allwell Ademola, who has passed away at the age of forty-three.

Reports suggest that she died on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

News of her death spread quickly across social media, which saw several actors took to their platforms to express commiserate with her family.

Actress Fathia Williams shared the sad news on Instagram, posting, “Haaaa. This hit me so bad. Eniobanke. Allahu Akbar.”

Damola Olatunji also reacted by sharing a candle image with the words, “Life is a mirage,” while Mide Martins posted a photo of Ademola on Facebook accompanied by a tribute.

Bidemi Kosoko responded with disbelief in an emotional Instagram post, openly rejecting the news.

“No way. No, no, no. Ko possible ooo. This isn’t true. God forbid, in Jesus’ name. I refuse to accept this one Lai Lai. God forbid. Olorun oni je,” she wrote. She went on to plead for a response from the late actress, adding, “Just reply to my message, abeg, oremi/aunty mi. I will wait patiently for your reply.”

Information circulating within the industry suggests she collapsed at home and was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Nigerian actor, content creator and influencer Odira Nwobu is dead.

According to his lawyer Chukwujiekwu Chukwudi and the Guild of Nigeria, who spoke to the BBC, the actor who died on Monday, November 25, died in South Africa at the age of forty-three (43).

The cause of the death is yet to be known but Chukwujiekwu Chukwudi  has revealed  that an ambulance was called to Nwobu’s hotel in the town of Benoni, near Johannesburg, after he was discovered alone in his room “gasping for breath”

Adding that, Paramedics attempted to keep the actor alive using a defibrillator, but he died at the scene before they could take him to the hospital.

While his family is yet to comment on the matter, many Nigerians and fans have expressed shock online.

Odira Nwobu was born in Nigeria’s south-eastern state of Enugu in 1982.

He was in more than 60 films during his lifetime and was well-known for his comedic persona and babyface.

He landed his first professional role – in a film called Joseph the Dreamer – straight out of secondary school.

He told the BBC News Igbo in 2021 that he enjoyed a successful career but often felt boxed into the same kinds of roles that pushed him toward creating online content, where he felt he had more creative freedom.

On TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, he built a large audience, gathering hundreds of thousands of followers.

According to Emeka Rollas, president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Nwobu was in South Africa at the time of his passing with a team of social media influencers promoting a Nigerian-owned real estate company.

His lawyer was also on the trip, serving as the legal adviser to the Nigerian firm that arranged the visit.

“[We] were shocked to receive calls from Nigeria to confirm the passing away of the young man, while we were still debating how to break the news to his family,” Mr Chukwudi said.

Nollywood actor Duro Micheal also died in October this year.

The news was shared in a social media post by Nigerian film producer Stanley Ontop.

The deceased is said to have been bedridden for a period of time before his demise.

Details of the exact cause of his death are not yet known; however, his colleagues have confirmed that he had struggled with his health in recent months.

“Nollywood actor Duro Michael has kicked the bucket. He died a few days ago after battling a terminal illness. May his soul rest in peace,” Stanley Ontop, in his tribute, stated.

Months ago, renowned Nollywood actor and distinguished academic, Dr. Columbus Irosanga, sadly passed away.

Actress Hilda Dokubo announced the news on her Instagram account on Thursday.

In her heartfelt message, she wrote, “There can’t be a shortage of Angels in heaven that the few here are called home like this na! This one is heavy on Uniport, Rivers State, Nollywood.”

She continued, “Our uncle Coli @colu_mbusirisoanga has gone to be with the Lord. Ikoli eh dein na mu.”

Originating from Okrika in Rivers State, Dr. Irosanga became a household name for his compelling performances as chief priests in Nollywood films.

He is especially remembered for his unforgettable portrayal of “Igbudu” in the 2001 hit film, Isakaba.

His extraordinary acting skills garnered him numerous prestigious awards, such as Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), Best Actor in a Drama at the City People Entertainment Awards, Most Promising Actor in Nigeria at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), and Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Best of Nollywood Awards.

Beyond his film career, Dr. Irosanga was a respected senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, where he played a pivotal role in mentoring many budding actors.

He is survived by his spouse and children, though the circumstances surrounding his death remain undisclosed. His passing represents a profound loss to both the academic and entertainment sectors in Nigeria.

In 2024, veteran Nollywood actor Emmanuel France passed away at the age of 80, leaving a void in the entertainment world.

The circumstances surrounding his death were not disclosed at the time.

The sad news was confirmed by filmmaker Femi Ogedengbe, who honored France’s memory in a heartfelt social media tribute.

Ogedengbe reflected on the joy of collaborating with him on various projects, including a notable trip to Tanzania in 2006.

Together, they worked on several films, such as Cross My Sin, She is My Sister, and The Director.

Born in Ghana, France was widely admired for his gentlemanly nature, humility, and respect for others.

His infectious warmth and vibrant personality endeared him to both colleagues and fans alike, making him a cherished figure in Nollywood.

One of his lifelong aspirations was to produce the film Ghana Must Go, a project that remained close to his heart but sadly never materialized.

Throughout his prolific career in Nollywood, France’s wit, charisma, and immense talent made him a beloved actor.

His passing represents a great loss to the Nigerian film industry, and he will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and work with him.

France leaves behind a lasting legacy of elegance, professionalism, and invaluable contributions to African cinema.

Right around the same year, the legendary Joe Zulu Adigwe, a titan of the Nigerian film industry, reportedly bid adieu to this mortal coil, leaving behind a legacy that’ll be remembered as long as there are screens to watch movies on.

The exact cause of his departure from this world remained a mystery, with his family keeping tight-lipped on the matter. But one thing’s for sure: his absence has left a Zulu-shaped hole in the hearts of fans and fellow actors alike.

From the silver screen to the small screen, Zulu Adigwe made his mark with his unforgettable performances in countless Nollywood flicks. Whether he was making us laugh, cry, or sit on the edge of our seats, he knew how to command attention and steal the show.

But it’s not just his acting chops that’ll be sorely missed; it’s the warmth, the charisma, and the sheer presence he brought to every role. The outpouring of love and tributes flooding in from fans and colleagues is a testament to the impact he had on so many lives.

As we bid farewell to this Nollywood icon, we can’t help but reflect on the other stars who’ve left us too soon. Since the dawn of 2024, the stage lights have dimmed for several other beloved actors, each leaving behind a trail of memories and a profound sense of loss.

So, let’s take a moment to remember those who’ve taken their final bow, leaving us with nothing but their cinematic legacies to cherish. The list includes the venerable Olofa Ina [Deji Aderemi], the radiant Ethel Ekpe, the vibrant Sisi Quadri, and the ever-comical Mr. Ibu, and most recently, the strong and fierce Junior Pope. Their names may have left the credits, but they’ll forever remain etched in the annals of Nollywood history.

  • We have problems, but it doesn’t mean Nollywood made Ghanaian actors – Kofi Adjorlolo

We have problems, but it doesn’t mean Nollywood made Ghanaian actors – Kofi Adjorlolo

Veteran Ghanaian actor Kofi Adjorlolo has maintained that while the Ghanaian movie industry has its challenges, it was never Nollywood that made Ghanaian actors.

He was on The Real Talk Podcast with Elizabeth Essuman, where he stated that the Ghanaian film industry had carved out its own stars and strong productions long before Nigerian filmmakers reached out.

“Though the Ghana Movie Industry may be having its own problems; it does not mean that Nigerians made us, Ghana Films made Ghanaian actors,” he declared. “Ghana movie industry and the movies produced made us popular before the Nigerian producers noticed, and called us.”

He noted that Ghana’s film industry, popularly called Ghallywood, had established itself strongly on the continent, forming the basis for much of the present cross-border narrative.

“Ghana movie is not down, actors are acting daily, producers are producing daily, work is ongoing daily; rather, it is the promotion and marketing that is lacking – and we’ve got to fix that area,” he stressed.

Mr Adjorlolo added that many well-known actors, Majid Michel, Van Vicker, Jackie Appiah, John Dumelo, Juliet Ibrahim, Nadia Buari, Yvonne Nelson and others, earned domestic acclaim before their Nollywood breakthroughs.

“Ghanaian actors gained their breakthroughs in their home country before being introduced to Nollywood,”

Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker and comedian, Kwaku Simtim-Misa, widely known as KSM, has offered a candid assessment of Ghana’s movie industry, stressing that it cannot yet be compared to the Nigerian film industry in terms of growth, structure, and contribution.

Speaking on The Career Trail program on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, KSM said that while Ghana is blessed with talented filmmakers and promising content, the absence of a sustainable and efficient system continues to hinder the industry’s growth.

“Unfortunately, it is still a growing industry. We can’t compare the film industry in Ghana to that of Nigeria. The Nigerians have had a longer time of being exposed to making films. And the more they make them, the better they get. The more they produce, the more they devise ways of distributing them. Eventually, you realize you’ve developed a system that works for you,” KSM stated.

On the other hand, he said Ghana’s film industry is still trying to find its feet.

Most filmmakers struggle to raise money at every stage, from writing the story, shooting the film, paying actors, to finally getting the movie out there for people to watch.

“Somebody will hustle to make money, then hustle to pay for the film. And after paying for the film, the actors, and everyone else involved, they now have to hustle again just to distribute the film. There are no proper distribution outlets,” he lamented.

Ghana’s film industry, once vibrant in the CD/DVD era, now struggles with structure, funding, and proper distribution.

Unlike Nigeria’s Nollywood, which has grown into a globally recognized industry through consistent production, strong distribution networks, and digital platforms, Ghana’s sector remains largely informal.

Filmmakers often self-fund and face hurdles getting their movies widely seen.

While a few initiatives and talented individuals are pushing forward, veteran filmmaker KSM says the lack of a solid system continues to limit growth and makes it difficult to compare Ghana’s industry with Nigeria.

In contrast, Ghanaian musician Ben Brainy has raised concerns about the state of Ghana’s music industry during an interview on Bryt TV.

He expressed disappointment that Ghanaians have not properly preserved their cultural and musical heritage, which has allowed Nigerians to take the lead in Highlife music.

Highlife, a key part of Ghana’s musical history, has influenced African music for years. Legends like E.T. Mensah, Nana Ampadu, and Agya Koo Nimo helped shape the genre. However, Ben Brainy feels Ghana has not done enough to protect and promote it.

He explained that many Ghanaian artists abandon traditional sounds in favor of modern trends, creating an opportunity for Nigerian musicians to step in. By blending Highlife with Afrobeat, Nigerians have made the genre more appealing worldwide, while Ghana struggles to maintain its impact.

“We don’t hold onto our own for long. We started highlife, but now it’s the Nigerians who are making it big with it. We leave what we have and chase other things,” Ben Brainy lamented during the interview with El Baby.

Ben Brainy encouraged Ghanaian musicians and industry leaders to focus on preserving and promoting Ghana’s unique musical style. He stressed that to keep Highlife music alive, Ghanaians must invest in it, share it with the world, and take pride in their cultural roots instead of letting outside influences take over.

Meanwhile, he has released the music video for his song Location. The track, which mixes Afrobeat and Highlife, highlights his signature style and storytelling skills. The video brings the song’s message to life with colorful and engaging visuals.

Through Location, Ben Brainy is not only gaining attention in the music industry but also reminding people of the importance of embracing Ghana’s musical heritage.

Veteran Actor Bob-Manuel shares secret to long-lasting marriage

Veteran Nollywood actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu recently shared his perspective on sustaining a lasting marriage, advising singles to prioritize meaningful values over superficial qualities such as wealth and physical looks. In an interview with The Punch, the actor, who has been married for 24 years since February 19, 2000, emphasized that the foundation of a

    He advised:

“I will tell them to look beyond the present. When I say the present, I mean superficial things like beauty, handsomeness, and material things. The world, these days, is very materialistic; young people nowadays in Nigeria are too materialistic. All their focus is on material things. It always does not work like that.

Some of our parents started out with almost nothing. Many of our fathers were not millionaires, nor did they have thousands of naira before marrying our mothers, yet they went on to build enduring marriages.

Often, it isn’t the grandest weddings that yield the most lasting marriages, nor are the most modest weddings always the ones that guarantee success. The strength of a marriage depends on the commitment of the individuals involved.

There are countless examples of wealthy families where arranged marriages between their children end in divorce within months. Although these couples may have children, and financial resources are abundant, those children often grow up lacking a clear sense of direction. Young people today need to

Some older women often recall that their husbands had “nothing” when they married, though that “nothing” symbolized a potential for growth.

Sadly, today’s world has shifted, and marriage has become more transactional, with wealth being the primary criterion.

True wealth is transient, and those who look beyond it often find stability. In previous generations, divorce was rare and seen as a taboo, but today, financial and peer pressures lead many marriages to break down. People should carefully consider what they want from marriage.”

I’m not gay, I’m very straight – Desmond Elliot denies homosexuality allegations

Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Desmond Elliot, has dismissed rumours claiming he is gay.

In a recent interview with TVC, he stated that he is heterosexual and insisted that such reports should be ignored and regarded with the disdain they warrant.

Elliot explained that he felt the article wasn’t worth responding to, which is why he chose to remain silent about the matter.

“Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it did not reduce or increase my life? Secondly, it is an opinion that is being conceived. And I don’t think it is necessary for me to come out and say it’s true or not true; as long as I’m affecting people positively, I’m good.”

Encouraging tolerance, Elliot stated that while everyone has the right to live as they see fit within legal boundaries, mutual respect should remain a priority.

He explained, “If you feel you identify as something, as long as it’s within the law, people don’t have to accept it, do you? So let me say right here, I’m straight… you can never have anyone straighter than me.

If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that’s left to them, but I don’t care really. Do you and enjoy yourself, but do it within the law and with respect to your neighbours.”

Fans concerned as death rumours of Nollywood actor Clem Ohameze surface

Fans of veteran Nollywood actor Clem Ohameze have expressed concern following the circulation of death rumours and a recent video on social media.

The actor, who underwent spinal surgery in 2021 after being bedridden for years due to an accident, has kept a low profile, sparking curiosity about his current health status.

Ohameze sought financial help for his surgery through a heartfelt video three years ago, receiving N8 million from Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, founder of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry, to cover his medical expenses.

In the emotional video that resurfaced, the actor expressed his gratitude to both the cleric and God for the successful surgery, placing his faith in divine intervention for a full recovery. “God willing, I will get back on my feet. I am going to be your testimony,” he said.

Despite over two years passing since the operation, there has been little information regarding his recovery. This has led to growing speculation, with some individuals questioning whether the actor is still alive.

“Where is Clem Ohameze?” one concerned fan asked.

Ohameze, renowned for his roles in films like My Sister My Love, Ije: The Journey, and Last Burial, remains a beloved figure in Nollywood, and his fans are eager for updates on his well-being amidst the swirling rumours.

‘We’re an endangered species’ – Kanayo O. Kanayo

Nollywood veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo recently described men as “endangered species” during an episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, co-hosted by Husband Material and Deity Cole.

He expressed concern over the disparity in financial support between male and female actors from wealthy benefactors.

Kanayo highlighted that rich Nigerian men often lavish significant amounts of money on female actors, making their male counterparts appear less industrious.

He emphasized that this financial favoritism extends to significant sums for personal projects, citing instances where female actors receive millions for productions.

In contrast, male actors, including himself, are told to work harder instead of receiving similar support.

Kanayo further pointed out that financial appeals for medical expenses are predominantly made by men, underscoring the financial challenges they face.

“Many Nigerian rich men patronise our women and give them benefits that make us look like we are not working hard,” he lamented.

“Nigerian rich men, most of them spend money on our girls to the extent that it impoverishes us. You call a girl, she’s your girlfriend, she says she wants to do a production and demand N100 million to N150 million and you give her. But if na me wey be KOK, you’ll say ‘go and work hard, my friend.’

The actor added, “Let’s look into this issue because have you seen any lady ask for financial help for any medical expenses? It’s only the men. We are an endangered species, that’s what I am saying.”

  • I found my husband after the worst heartbreak of my life – Nollywood’s Sharon Ooja

I found my husband after the worst heartbreak of my life – Nollywood’s Sharon Ooja

Nollywood actress Sharon Ooja recently tied the knot with her partner, Ugo Nwoke, in a beautiful ceremony in Abuja.

In an exclusive interview with Bella Naija, Sharon opened up about her unexpected and swift journey into marriage, revealing details that highlight the serendipitous nature of their love story.

Sharon recounted how she was introduced to Ugo by her sister during a period when she was recovering from a devastating heartbreak.

Initially reluctant to engage with anyone new, she eventually gave in to her sister’s persistence.

“My sister said a friend of hers wanted to speak to me, and I wasn’t in the mood. But she gave him my number anyway,” Sharon shared.

Their communication began slowly, with Sharon not immediately realizing the significance of the connection. “He was really smart, and we probably didn’t speak as much as we should have,” she admitted.

Despite her initial disinterest, Ugo’s persistence paid off. Months passed, and he continued to reach out, leading to increasingly meaningful conversations.

One particular conversation marked a turning point in their relationship. “We spoke for about three hours, and I realized I liked him,” Sharon said.

This deep conversation sparked a shift in her feelings, making her more open to the possibility of a relationship.

Their relationship progressed quickly from there. Sharon recalled an instance when Ugo didn’t call her for a couple of days while she was traveling.

When she asked him why, he responded with, “You told me you were going to go out and have fun.” His next words were even more telling: “I didn’t want you to be single anymore.” This declaration set the stage for their whirlwind romance.

After just two and a half months of dating, Ugo proposed, and Sharon accepted. Their engagement quickly led to marriage, with the couple tying the knot just two months later.

Reflecting on this rapid journey, Sharon described it as nothing short of a miracle. “We dated for literally two-and-a-half months, and I was engaged in the third month. And we married two months after that.”

No more ‘money rituals’, smoking scenes in Nollywood films

Shaibu Husseini, the CEO of Nigeria’s National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), announced that the federal government has approved the prohibition of money rituals and the glamorization of vices in Nollywood films.

Mr. Husseini disclosed this at an event in Enugu on Wednesday, organized by the NFVCB in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

The event was attended by movie producers, directors, actors from various parts of West Africa, and leaders of various guilds and associations in the Nigerian film industry.

Mr Husseini said, “Today, we are facing an industry emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians, and stakeholders. When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, on the need to make subsidiary legislation to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies, he saw the need to include money rituals.”

“Others included in the regulation are ritual killings and glamorising other crimes in order to further sanitise the film industry. Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the  Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu  Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004, has approved the regulation.”

He added, “The minister has approved the ‘prohibition of money ritual, ritual killing, tobacco, tobacco products, nicotine product promotion and glamorisation display in movies, musical videos and skits regulations 2024’. We have also forwarded the approved copy to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette.”

Mr. Husseini stated that the sensitization program aimed to educate stakeholders about the dangers of depicting smoking in Nigerian movies.

According to him, glamorizing smoking not only has severe health implications but also negatively influences teens and young adults, who make up the largest segment of Nigerian movie viewers.

He added that the film board plans to implement extensive enlightenment programs in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups, and other institutions.

he NFVCB boss said, “As you all know, the film industry occupies a central position in the entertainment and creative sector, and it is imperative that we continue to place the highest premium on the progress of the film industry.

“The NFVCB supports smoke-free movies and supports smoke-free Nollywood, and we therefore seek your collaboration to develop creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages.”

He noted that after a series of engagements, the NFVCB, in collaboration with the CAPPA, decided to make “subsidiary regulations” to address smoking in movies since this aspect was not expressly spelt out in the extant law.

“The NFVCB is well prepared to take leadership in this regard and has planned and begun implementing innovative ways to achieve its mandate,” he said.

  • Movie producer highlights why Nollywood actors die quickly

Movie producer highlights why Nollywood actors die quickly

This year, the industry has repeatedly mourned the loss of veterans and promising actors.

Film producer Hope Omenihu Samuel has shed light on the alarming mortality rate among actors in Nigeria‘s Nollywood scene.

In a candid conversation with ‘The Sun’, she voiced her alarm over the recent spate of deaths.

Highlighting the need for systemic change within the industry’s treatment of its actors, Hope advocates for a professional environment that prioritizes the health of its talent.

“If given the authority, I would spearhead initiatives like health seminars to emphasize self-care while we’re in our prime. The relentless grind without proper self-care is taking a toll, leading many to deplete their savings on health issues that stem from long-term neglect.

“It’s crucial to understand that diligence in our work doesn’t preclude us from maintaining our health through adequate nutrition and rest. The rising death toll and illness in our community are direct results of neglecting personal health, and this trend must be addressed,” she stated.

The Nollywood industry has been hit hard by the loss of numerous esteemed and emerging actors in 2024, with notable figures such as Mr. Ibu and Junior Pope among the recent bereavements.

The community has repeatedly been in mourning for its lost veterans and promising newcomers.

Many have succumbed to severe health conditions like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, often passing away suddenly.

Among those Nollywood has had to bid farewell to in 2024 are Olofa Ina, Ethel Ekpe, Sisi Quadri, Mr. Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, and Aderounmu Adeju.

Yul Edochie’s lawyer absent in court in first divorce trial

The ongoing saga of Nollywood star Yul Edochie‘s divorce from his wife May has gripped the public’s attention, with recent developments causing a delay in legal proceedings.

Due Process Advocates (DPA) Organization, headed by Emeka Ugwuonye, revealed that Yul’s legal representative was notably absent during the divorce hearing on May 7, 2024.

The attorney, Judy Austin, had cited illness, prompting the court to reschedule the trial.

While Yul was present in court, the absence of his lawyer prevented substantial matters from progressing.

The DPA Organization expressed concern over the repeated delays, emphasizing the case’s complexity involving social media behavior, child welfare, marital assets, May’s safety, and the marriage’s status.

“Nevertheless, we maintain our trust in the court’s ability to administer justice in due time. The case encompasses multiple facets, including the parties’ social media conduct, the children’s welfare, marital assets, May’s safety, and the ultimate determination of the marriage’s status.”
Despite frustrations over the delays, the DPA Organization urged trust in the court’s ability to deliver justice.

They reassured the public of May’s well-being and cautioned against unreliable online rumors.

The divorce proceedings stem from Yul Edochie’s announcement in April 2022 of Judy Austin as his second wife, which sparked controversy.

May Edochie responded by initiating legal action in August 2023, leading to the ongoing courtroom drama.

In a previous court session, Yul clarified that he and Judy Austin were not married but collaborated professionally on skits, adding layers to the intricate legal battle.

  • Actress recounts how a man she thought was a ‘destiny helper’ tried to rape her

Actress recounts how a man she thought was a ‘destiny helper’ tried to rape her

Nigerian actress, Ogechukwu Anasor, also recognized as Bliss Thelma Joseph, has recounted a harrowing experience of how she was nearly raped by a man she thought was a destiny helper.

This, according to her, happened in the early stages of her Nollywood career.

Having made her acting debut in 2016 while still a student, Ogechukwu described the encounter as a nightmarish experience. The actress openly acknowledged the existence of sexual harassment within the entertainment industry, sharing that her ordeal was just one among numerous incidents faced by others in the limelight.

Recounting her distressing encounter during a phone conversation with our reporter, the actress, who hails from Anambra State, revealed that she was approaching 18 years old at the time, possessing minimal acting experience and lacking influential contacts.

She has been fortunate to connect with individuals who were willing to offer her guidance on navigating her way into the industry.

Fortuitously, she secured her debut role in a movie, seemingly handed to her effortlessly. However, unbeknownst to her, the saying “all that glitters is not gold” held true, as she encountered her most challenging experience while attempting to secure her second movie role.

She narrates: “I got my first role in a movie on a platter of gold and I thought it was going to be an easy one. But when I got my second role, the reverse was the case. It wasn’t as easy as I expected . At a point, I almost committed suicide as a result of a lot of things that happened in the course of my journey into Nollywood. ”

Painting a graphic picture of how the incident happened, the beautiful, tattooed actress recalled how the rapist invited her to his Awka apartment and started caressing her, and in the process slapped her and pulled out his kitchen knife to tear her clothes.

Continuing, she said: “The first time I almost got raped was in Akwa. I tried to come back after I did my first film. I met a girl on set while filming my first movie and we became friends. She introduced me to a particular man who claimed to be a producer in Nollywood.

“We got talking on the telephone and he invited me to his hotel room. I honoured his invitation and thereafter, I returned to my home town. I was supposed to be in Awka again for a job by Brymo. So, on coming to Awka, I started calling the other producers that I was in town and the guy in question asked me to come to his house to see him.

“I wasn’t comfortable with the idea, but I felt he was a destiny helper because he sounded calm and nice. So, I went to his house where I met two other girls and a guy. We got talking and I told him I wanted to leave for my home town. It was at that point he told me there was a job they wanted to include me. I didn’t know how the industry was operating then. I was just there with him. I was almost 18 years old then. While I was with him, late Brymo’s PA kept calling my line. But I lied to him that I was in traffic and would be with them soon. Later, the guy in question dropped me off. I can’t remember exactly the name of the place again, where I met Zubby Micheal for the first time, Junior Pope and Sylvester Madu. The actors claimed they were working with him which turned out to be all lies. I took pictures with them. In the end, they wasted my time after my bag was locked up in the guy’s house. It was around past 1a m in the morning that we went back to his house.

“I couldn’t go home. I think that guy is a ritualist because my spirit kept telling me to leave his house. If I knew what I now know I would have left the place even without my bag. But my concern was that I was filming and my bag was in the guy’s house. So, when we got to his house, he was already drunk as he started behaving strangely. I was not comfortable with him. But I was stuck, I couldn’t leave his house because I don’t reside in Awka and do not know anybody in town. Later, he put on his generating set and increased the volume of his music so loud because he was living in a self-contained apartment.

“I was like I can’t sleep with this noise. But before I knew what was happening, he started touching me and I tried asking him what he was doing. The next thing he did was that he slapped me and pulled out a kitchen knife, muttering he would kill me and nobody would hear me because the music was loud.

“I think everyone in the neighbourhood was scared of him as he was a Chief Security man in that area.

I then started crying, saying I was a virgin. He didn’t believe me, rather he accused me of being a lesbian. He said ‘you are a lesbian that’s why you don’t want to have anything to do with me’. He said he would confirm by himself whether I was truly a virgin or not and if it’s true he would let me be. I was like let’s go to the hospital the next day. “But he refused, saying what’s the need of a hospital when he had a hand to confirm the truth. I was scared for my life. There was nothing I could do than let him have his way. He beat me terribly and used the kitchen knife to tear my dress just to instill fear in me.

“The next day, I fled his house, it was later I heard that the guy was a serial rapist and that’s what he has been doing to many girls in the industry”.

Though we are yet to verify Oge’s claims, she however told our reporter she had faced a lot of challenges, while trying to find her feet in the movie industry.

She added, “I was rejected and blacklisted in the industry. I know how many jobs I did and wasn’t paid for. A lot of things happened during the early days of my acting career”.

Interestingly, despite the challenges, the actress did not give up on her acting career. At the moment, she’s one of the promising actresses to watch out for in 2024. Oge is best known for movies such as “My Kind of Girl (2023)”, “Transition,” (2022) and “The Anointed Bride” (2022) among others.

So, if I want to do my own films like right now I am planning on doing my own films, I am going to get a producer who is very good with that. Pay the producer to run everything but he’s going to be professional. So, I won’t say because it’s my film let me do everything, then I will mess it up.”

“It feels good. Growing up was really good with him as a father. He is extremely strict, but I thank God that He gave me a father like that. I couldn’t have wished for a better father. He is a strict catholic, so a lot of things I know today I learnt because of my background. Like I told you, I would rather die than dope. Kill me but I won’t dope and that’s how my father is.

My father made us to understand that it is better to have a good name. Good name will get you riches and everything you need. That’s the kind of family I was raised in, and my mum too is very strict. There wasn’t much money then to throw around but we grew up loving God and each other.”

  • ‘Kill the Impostor’ beautifully exhibits the realities of societal pressures, repressed dreams and self doubt

Filmmaking is a visual representation of realities, in a bid to portray the struggles faced by viewers, who then draw inspiration to address and find solutions to thematic problems affecting them.

This well-executed short film is the perfect motivation for creatives, and anyone struggling with imposter syndrome.

This is why excellent filmmaking in the eyes of the audience is often not determined by how cinematic tropes are efficiently executed, the quality, camera angles, or shots, but by how well they can relate to the representation of reality on screen.

This makes a Nollywood short film like the Adeniyi Joseph Omobulejo-directed ‘Kill the Impostor’ a delightful and excellent representation. The film tells the story of an acclaimed writer, Salama (played by Susan Echa), who struggles to creatively document her story because of the challenges she is facing in her marriage.

The movie thematically explores delicate issues surrounding marital relationships, creative blocks, family interactions, and emotional turmoil.

I could relate so much to the creative problems of the lead because of my dispensation to writing and documenting stories, but what makes the storytelling unique is its excellent fusion of the narrative technique to adequately provide context and solutions for the viewers.

The movie does not only lay out problems and explore themes propelling the movie’s message, but it also provides practical solutions, like the voiceovers reeling off suggestions on how creative blocks could be channeled into telling stories that would be brilliant and relatable to the audiences we intend to address.

The movie’s essence is well-portrayed in showing the challenges of its main character, Salama, who navigates a tumultuous experience with her husband, Ezeonu (played by Patrick Dibuah), in facing her challenges — child-bearing demands, societal pressures on married women, and a lack of understanding of emotional depths from partners in a marriage— which all strain marriages.

The film does a great job in the cinematography department, as the shots are well-effected to fully portray the depths and the criticality of the project’s essence. The up-close camera shots of the characters effectively convey their pain and vulnerability to the viewers.

The characters execute their roles flawlessly, bringing the rawness of the core themes and essence of the film to life. The movie also kills it with the grading, lighting, production, and sound design.

The result is a beautiful exposition of injustice, and how the pressures on women affect their emotional and mental abilities to fulfil and actualize their duties, dreams, and ambitions.

It exhibits the arrogance portrayed by male chauvinistic characters, as seen in how pleas towards reconciling with Salama are not met with an apology from her husband, Ezeonu.

It also examines the harsh realities of unrealized ambitions, and how our battles could hinder our projected dreams and visions (Salama’s challenges led her to discard a promising draft of her story).

‘Kill the Impostor’ is a perfect documentation of vulnerability, repressed dreams and the imposter syndrome which can hinder one’s gifts and talents. Like the title implies, the movie calls on the viewers to stand firm in the face of life’s challenges and refuse to give in to the imposter standing in the way of our dreams and aspirations.
