Kwabena Agyepong proposes allowing Addai-Nimoh and Agyarko to compete in Nov. 4 election

A prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has proposed that Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh, who shared the fifth position at the Super Delegates Conference, should be given the opportunity to compete in the Party’s Presidential Primary scheduled for November 4th.

He clarified that even though the requirement for the upcoming election’s next phase was five candidates, it might be practical to permit all six contenders to participate. This would help avoid the expenses associated with organizing a run-off specifically for the two candidates.

Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko both secured an equal fifth position during the NPP Super Delegates Conference held on Saturday, August 26. In the conference, they each received nine votes.

The Party was expected to select five out of 10 aspirants to compete in the November 4, Presidential Primary.

Mr Agyepong, who could not form the top five aspirants in the first round, pledged to table the issue before the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee as well as the National Council meeting on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

“The National Council is meeting on Wednesday; I am a member of it. If I have the opportunity, I will suggest that they should allow them to join. Six is not different from five….”

“After all, the whole idea behind pruning down is because of the massive numbers that we saw in 2007, when I was the youngest of the 17 aspirants and this time, we had 10, which with some of us, in our view, they could have allowed us to go straight on.”

He stressed: “I think they should be allowed since they are sharing the fifth position.”

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the Vetting Committee speaking after the declaration of the results by the Electoral Commission (EC), announced a run- off on Saturday, 2nd September to break the tie between Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko.

  • “Bloody waste of time” – Boakye Agyarko on NPP’s SDC

“Bloody waste of time” – Boakye Agyarko on NPP’s SDC

Boakye Agyarko, a contender for the flagbearer position in Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized the current implementation of the super delegates election process within the party. Agyarko deems the process, as it stands, to be a “bloody waste of time.” He acknowledges the original intention behind the super delegates provision to streamline and organize the candidate selection process, but he believes a more efficient statistical approach could achieve the same results.

Agyarko, who himself was involved in drafting this provision, expressed his concerns during an interview with the media in Koforidua after participating in the super delegates election. He clarifies that the purpose of this election isn’t to declare a single winner but to narrow down the field to five individuals who would then proceed to the larger delegate population for the final decision. He criticizes the current practice of conducting multiple reruns until five candidates are chosen, finding it unnecessarily time-consuming.

According to Agyarko, the ultimate authority to choose the party’s candidate should reside with the broader delegate base of over 208,000 individuals, rather than a smaller subset of super delegates. He disputes the notion that the candidate with the highest votes in the super delegates election should be automatically considered the flagbearer, highlighting that the original intent was for the selected five candidates to advance to the general population for the final choice.

Regarding the logistics of the super delegates election, Agyarko clarifies that the provision specifies “a venue” for the exercise, not multiple venues, challenging misinterpretations that have arisen.

The article also mentions an upcoming runoff between Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh, both of whom received nine votes in the super delegates conference. The conference aimed to shortlist five candidates out of a total of ten for the final election scheduled for November 4, 2023. In the initial conference, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia garnered the most votes, followed by Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kyerematen.

It’s important to recognize that the provided information is based on a specific event and viewpoint and may not encompass the broader context or diverse opinions related to the super delegates election concept within the NPP. Ken Agyapong, Hopeson Adorye, 3 others referred to NPP disciplinary committee

Aspiring New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Kennedy Agyapong, and four others have been invoked the wrath of leadership of the party following their conduct during and after Saturday’s Super Delegates Conference.

The five have been summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee for misconducting themselves during the just-ended Conference.

The four are; Mr. Raphael Patrick Sarfo, Mr. Charles Dokyi Yaw-Addo, Mr. Musa Sulemana and Mr. Hopeson Yaovi Adorye.

The party in a statement explained that their referral to the disciplinary committee is in “direct response to evidence, including video and photographic materials, which suggest potential violations of the provisions outlined in Article 3(5)(A) of the Party’s Constitution and a potential misconduct under Article 4(7).”

The party further stated that in relation to Kennedy Agyapong, he will be summoned before the disciplinary committee to “provide responses and further details to the accusations and threats he made against certain personalities in a video that has since gone viral on social media and mainstream media.”

This comes after the Assin Central MP was captured on camera promising to deliver “a showdown” to President Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr. Bawumia after his polling agent was allegedly chased into a room by angry delegates. In the statement, the party stressed their commitment “to upholding democratic values, accountability, and the highest standards of conduct.”

“We are confident that this disciplinary process will be conducted with fairness, transparency, and impartiality,” it concluded.

Mahama condemns ‘brutal attacks’ during NPP Super Delegates Conference

Former President John Mahama has condemned the chaos which emerged during the New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates Conference.

He particularly expressed worry over the attacks that have characterized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) special delegates congress held on Saturday August 26, 2023.

The agent for Flag bearer hopeful, Alan Kyerematen, Ali Zakaria has been attacked at the North East Region during the on-going Special Delegates Congress of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on GHOne TV with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, deputy spokesperson for Alan Campaign Team, Richard Nyamah stated that the agent was beaten to pulp for protesting the public display of the ballot by some delegates.

Commenting on the development , President Mahama says reported cases of violence during the special delegates congress is “detrimental to democracy.”“It would appear that violence has become the new normal for the NPP in any electoral contest they are involved in.

“Acts of violence during what should be a peaceful civic exercise must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians. Such brutal acts have no place in modern society, especially during an internal contest among persons who belong to the same party and have known each other for many years,” Mr. Mahama stated.

He continued: “The barbarity of Ayawaso West Wuogon in 2019 and the murder of eight innocent Ghanaians during the 2020 elections will forever be a blot on the legacy of President Akufo-Addo and VP Mahamudu Bawumia.”

However, Mr. Nyamah stated that their agent is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital adding that the Alan camp will take the necessary steps on the issue.

“I’ve personally spoken to the Police Commander and the Electoral Commission Officer and I told them our concern. Unfortunately the process is over. There are other processes and we have reported it to our bosses in Accra and we will take the necessary steps,” added.

  • NPP grassroot association sends strong message to MPs, Constituency chairmen ahead of super delegates conference

NPP grassroot association sends strong message to MPs, Constituency chairmen ahead of super delegates conference

The Association of Electoral Area Coordinators in the Ashanti Region has issued an appeal to the Members of Parliament and Constituency Chairmen of the Ashanti Region to vote for the Vice President, HE Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming Super Delegates Conference.

They assert that this support from the super delegates will lead to reciprocated support from polling station executives in future parliamentary primaries and constituency elections.

“…the grassroots have indicated that, once the super delegates vote for Dr. Bawumia, the polling station executives will also return the favour by voting for these MPs and Constituency Chairmen in the next parliamentary primaries and constituency elections.

“This is the reason why we are re-echoing their mantra, “you do us, and we do you”

“We work directly and closely with the Polling Station executives and grassroots members of the party and are therefore in the best position to articulate ore concerns and interests.

The association, representing the grassroots and polling station executives of the party, claims to have a direct and close working relationship with these members. They emphasize their unique position to communicate the concerns and interests of the grassroots within the party.

The appeal is based on the belief that if the MPs and Constituency Chairmen vote for Vice President Bawumia as the party’s Presidential candidate in the 2024 election, they will be honoring the wishes of the grassroots and polling station executives. They cite previous public declarations of support for Bawumia by the MPs and Constituency Chairmen during the Vice President’s visit to the region.

The leaders of the association provide contact information for inquiries or communication regarding their appeal.

  • Survey predicts landslide victory for Bawumia in NPP super delegates conference

Survey predicts landslide victory for Bawumia in NPP super delegates conference

The Centre for Sustainable African Development Initiatives, UK, has forecast that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is positioned to secure a substantial victory in the upcoming NPP Super Delegates election on Saturday.

A survey conducted by the group, which delved into the outcome of the Special Delegates Conference and potential top 5 contenders, indicated that Dr. Bawumia is expected to emerge as the winner with a decisive margin.

The remaining candidates are projected to gather relatively modest percentages to secure a spot in the top 5.

According to the findings, which were based on the views of Super Delegates, Dr. Bawumia is anticipated to achieve 72.6% of the votes. Former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen is predicted to come in second with 7.7%.

Kennedy Agyepong is positioned to take the third spot with 4.3%, followed by Kwabena Adjei Agyepong with 1.3%, and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto concluding the top 5 with 0.6%.

The survey also disclosed that 13% of the delegates were undecided at the time of the research.

The special delegates, composed of Members of Parliament, constituency chairmen, regional executives, national executives, and other members, were asked about their predictions for the top 5 candidates to be elected by the delegates of NPP’s special electoral college. Additionally, they were questioned about the criteria they use to assess candidates for the NPP flagbearer position.

According to the report, the primary factors considered by delegates when evaluating candidates were the candidate’s vision for the party and the country, as well as their competence.
