Nungua residents call for enhanced security to check surging robbery cases

Nungua residents have called for stronger security measures in the wake of increasing robbery cases and phone snatching incidents in Addogono and Baatsona, both suburbs in the Greater Accra Region.

Several community members expressed heightened concerns about safety, particularly during nighttime, urging the Ghana Police Service to step up patrol efforts to curb criminal activities in the area.

Residents reported that the culprits, often moving in pairs on motorbikes, target pedestrians by snatching mobile phones, handbags, and other valuables before speeding away.

Isaac Young, a businessman from Addogono, recounted a recent encounter where he was confronted and searched by a group of robbers while returning from town around 10:00 p.m. last week.

“They gave my yam phone back to me and told me to upgrade the phone I use,” he said, describing how the gang, comprising six individuals on three motorcycles, attacked anyone they encountered, though some managed to escape.

Another resident, Mawutor Gaar, shared his experience, recalling a phone snatching incident at the Addogono Last Stop about three months ago. He said the incident left him fearful and reluctant to carry his phone when going out, especially in the evenings.

“I was coming home from work when two men on a motorbike came from behind and snatched a lady’s phone from her hand. It happened so fast. People around tried to help, but the thieves escaped,” he narrated.

Concerned residents have since called for heightened police visibility, emphasizing the need for increased patrols, especially during the night and in identified crime hotspots, to deter such incidents and restore community safety.

John Issah Andullah Tassa, Assemblyman for Nungua Addogono, acknowledged the surge in robbery cases and assured the community that he would collaborate with law enforcement to address the issue.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he revealed that both day and night attacks had been reported in recent weeks and pledged to engage the district police command for the deployment of additional patrol teams. He also urged residents to cooperate with the police by promptly reporting suspicious activities.

Tassa further admitted that non-functioning streetlights were contributing to the security challenges, explaining that the electoral areas had yet to receive an adequate supply from the assembly but expressed optimism that the situation would be addressed soon.

NAPO asked chiefs to contribute to development, not join political parties – Fiifi Boafo clarifies

Fiifi Boafo, spokesperson for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, has clarified that Dr. Prempeh’s request for chiefs to weigh in on political matters does not violate Ghana’s constitution.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, during a meeting with the Nungua Traditional Council, encouraged traditional leaders to participate in political discussions, emphasizing their crucial role in Ghana’s development.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Fiifi Boafo stressed that Dr. Prempeh’s request aims at fostering collective progress rather than challenging constitutional principles.

Mr Boafo explained that Dr. Opoku Prempeh seeks robust input from traditional authorities on critical issues like natural resource management to ensure that decisions benefit the broader society rather than just politicians.

The spokesperson reiterated that NAPO, is not urging chiefs to align with political parties but to offer their valuable perspectives as important stakeholders in Ghana’s development.

“He was very categorically about it. He said that he’s not asking any chief to put on the political party colour, rather what he is asking for is that if there’s a proposal, for instance, how we handle our resources, for example, mineral resources, how must we handle it?

“There must be a strong position from our traditional authorities in indicating the things that we think we should do as a country to help develop the country.”

“He’s of the view that for example, the constitution states that when resources are found in the land, the resources work with the state, whereas if it was a case of the chief giving out the land for someone to farm, and the chief has shares in there, but then when it happens in the case of natural resources, the opportunity given to the chief is limited. Is that the best way to go?”

“These are some of the things he wants us to look out for as a people going forward, and not just limit everything to the hands of the political class, who take the decision and seek implementation, but rather as key stakeholders their voices are heard and they must be involved in the development of our country.”

Sounds of joy, excitement as Nungua welcomes their ‘queen’ Naa Yomo after release – Report

Nungua, a suburb of Accra, buzzed with excitement as news spread of the release of Naa Yomo Ayemuade, the supposed bride of Gborbu Wulomo, who had been under police protection for weeks.

A video shared by TV3GH on X showed residents eagerly gathering at the entrance of Nungua town, accompanied by singing and drumming, adding to the lively atmosphere.

“Our queen is back,” they sang as they welcomed Naa Yomo Ayemuade with a procession.

The report also added that elders of the town afterwards ushered her into the shrine.

Gborbu Wulomo, the chief priest, who was accused of marrying the underage girl, was also spotted at the entrance of the shrine.

Meanwhile, the chief priest has remained quiet since the issue of his reported marriage to the minor unfolded.

    Background

The police intervened and took custody of the minor amid concerns regarding the legality of her alleged marriage. This action led to tension when members of the Nungua Traditional Council demanded her immediate release from the hotel where she was being held.

Despite these developments, the office of Gborbu Wulomo clarified that the relationship between Gborbu Wulomo and the 16-year-old girl, Naa Ayemoade, is customary and not a formal marriage.

During a press conference at the Gborbu Wulomo’s office, Spokesperson Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, the Nungua Mankralo, acknowledged that while the customary arrangement involves an underage individual, it does not condone the initiation of a sexual relationship.

Naa Okromo arrives in Nungua after being released from state custody

Fifteen-year-old Naa Yomo Okromo Ayemuade, who has been married to the Gborbu deity, has arrived in her native town of Nungua after being held in the custody of the state over investigations into child marriage claims.

She arrived in Nungua on Friday morning after members of the Nungua Traditional Council on Thursday night protested at the Coconut Groove Hotel in Accra, demanding the release of their queen.

Naa Okromo Ayemuede’s marriage to the Gborbu Wulomo deity, officiated by Gborbu Wulomo Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, sparked public outrage due to her status as a minor. She had been under police protection while investigations into the controversial marriage are ongoing.

The police took custody of the young queen due to concerns over the legality of her marriage because of her age. Tensions rose when members of the Nungua Traditional Council protested at the hotel where the queen was being held, demanding her immediate release.

Speaking to the media, a representative of the Nungua Traditional Council expressed the urgency of their demand, stating, “She is there, we have the evidence that she is there. That is the place where we have been feeding her, she is in good hands, but we need her… all we need is, we need our queen mother,” he said.

Initial reports indicated that the queen was 12 years old, but subsequent clarification from traditional leaders stated that she is 15, a figure confirmed by the government. Ghana’s constitution, however, sets the age of consent for marriage at 18 years.

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection announced that, following advice from the Attorney General’s office, Naa Ayemuede will be released to her family after signing a bond.

The Ministry stated that the child has undergone counselling and does not have any immediate health issues. Additionally, the Ministry confirmed that Naa Ayemuede is not pregnant.

Prior to her arrival, Nungua residents took to the streets to dance and sing to welcome their queen mother.

VIDEO: Nungua residents celebrate the arrival of Naa Okromo

Nungua residents have been sighted in a video on social media celebrating ahead of the arrival of Naa Okromo who has been married to the Gborbu deity.

The 15-year-old girl, who is involved in a recent child marriage case, according to the Minister Designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, on Thursday would be released to her parents (on Thursday) following a directive from the Attorney General.

This decision comes after a psychological and medical evaluation confirmed that she is not pregnant.

Ms. Newman, however, stated that Naa Okromo would be reunited with her family after they sign a bond.

“The attorney general has issued an interim report which is dated April 18, 2024, and has advised that in the best interest of the child and in accordance with Sections 2 and 5 of the Children’s Act, the child should be released to her parent pending their complete review of the docket.

“Thus, the child will be reunited with her family today, April 18, 2024, after her parents have signed a bond,” she stated.

In the video gone viral, Nungua residents could be seen dancing as they await Naa Okromo’s arrival.

Naa had been in the custody of the state after news broke of her customary rituals for her union with the Gborbu deity.

The Office of the Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse clarified that the rites conducted on March 30 for Naa and the 63-year-old Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, Gborbu Wulomo, were part of customary rituals for her union with the Gborbu deity.

These rites aimed to facilitate her role as Naa Yoomo Ayemuede, one of the four traditional and religious wives of the deity, and did not involve any carnal relationships or marriage, as previously misconstrued.

A statement signed by Rev. D. N. Gyasi Ankrah, Director of Administrations, emphasized that the ceremony was misinterpreted as a marriage, leading to condemnation from various quarters, including government agencies, international organizations, and the media.

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah apologizes to Nungua elders after controversial remarks on ‘child marriage’

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, host of the morning show on Angel FM, has issued a heartfelt apology to the Nungua Traditional Council, the people of Nungua, and Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, the overlord of Gadangme State.

In a public statement, Afrifa-Mensah expressed remorse for his previous comments, explaining that he was unaware of Gborbu-Wulomo’s status as the head of the Gadangme tribe when he made his remarks about an alleged marriage to a 12-year-old.

“If I claim to be a fighter for human rights and one day I wake up to the news that an MC officiating a programme says even my lord, Osei Tutu (Asantehene) is marrying a 12-year-old child, I would be so angry and I would say it the way I said it. However, at the time I was speaking on the matter, my understanding of Gborbu-Wulomo was that he was someone like Kwaku Bomsam [a fetish priest] because sitting here I didn’t know the Wulomo was the head of the Gadangme tribe. I thought it was the Mantse who was the head,” Afrifa-Mensah explained.

He continued, “So my understanding of who Gborbu-Wulomo was at the time of making those pronouncements was not that he was the overlord of the Gadangme Traditional Council…. So every Gadangme who is angered has a right to be angry.”

Acknowledging his misunderstanding, Afrifa-Mensah extended his apology to the Gadangme community and Gborbu-Wulomo, emphasizing his respect for tradition and customs.

“So I will base on that and apologise to the Gadangme community and Gborbu-Wulomo that per the misconception which the MC made the utterances was what I based on to make those statements in anger. I have respect for tradition and customs but at no point would we hide behind traditions and customs to do the wrong thing. That will not happen today or tomorrow, even if you put a gun to my head I will say it,” he stated.

The Ga Traditional Council had previously summoned Afrifa-Mensah to appear before them regarding his comments. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse’s Palace on Friday, April 12, 2024.

“I have been instructed by the Elders of the Nungua Traditional Area to invite you to the palace concerning the false, unsavoury, and desecrating statements you made against Nuumo Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, Overlord of the Gadangme State, and King Odaifio Welentsi III, Paramount Chief of Nungua Traditional Area, during a radio show at Angel FM,” it read.

The invitation, issued by the elders of the Nungua Traditional Area, emphasized the importance of according the summons with utmost respect and noted that the outcome of the meeting could have significant implications for both parties involved.

There was no marriage between Wulomo and minor, it was a traditional rite – Chieftaincy Minister

Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Amoah Boateng, has addressed the controversy surrounding the reported child marriage event in Nungua last weekend.

During an interview on JoyNews’ The Probe, Mr. Boateng clarified that the video circulated on social media depicted a traditional rite, not a marriage ceremony.

According to him, “during the event a lot of things were said and the information came out as if they were marrying the girl to the Wulomo [Gborbu Wulomo Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII].”

He stated that in response to the public outcry, his Ministry, along with the Gender Ministry and the Attorney General’s office, promptly intervened by meeting with the traditional authorities of Nungua and the Ga priest implicated in the incident.

“Through these discussions, it became evident that there were no intentions of carnal relations with the young girl,” he said on Sunday.

Highlighting the utmost importance of the child’s welfare, Mr. Boateng and his team collaborated closely with the police to safely remove the minor from the Nungua Community.

The Minister’s prompt actions underscore the government’s dedication to protecting the rights and well-being of minors in the country.

As investigations progress, Mr. Asamoah Boateng has committed to collaborating with law enforcement agencies and local communities to uphold justice and accountability.

Mr. Asamoah Boateng previously stated that the girl in question is 16 years old, not 12 as initially reported.

It’s difficult to find a virgin in Nungua – Odaifio Welentsi III

The Nungua Mantse, Odaifio Welentsi III, has defended the marriage of Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII to a minor, citing biblical references and emphasizing the traditional requirement that the priest marries a virgin.

Odaifio Welentsi III justified the union by explaining the scarcity of virgin girls above the age of 9 years in Nungua, making the case of Naa Ayemoede, a minor, significant in meeting this customary demand.

He asserted that the marriage aligns with biblical principles and reflects the unchanging nature of Nungua and Ga culture.

The Nungua Mantse highlighted the challenges of finding virgins in modern times, stating that most girls above 15 years are no longer virgins due to sexual experiences.

Critics have condemned the marriage, questioning the justification of marrying a minor and raising concerns about child rights violations.

Opponents argue that cultural traditions should not be used to justify practices that exploit vulnerable individuals, especially children.

In response to the controversy, the Ghana police service has taken custody of the bride and her parents pending investigations.

Initial reports suggested the girl was 12 years old, but subsequent clarifications state she is 16, still below the legal marriage age of 18 according to Ghana’s constitution.

“We have been transparent with our dealings throughout the process. Everything has been opened to the public. Anyone who claims they have not seen what we are doing is the one who doesn’t want to see it.

“And so far, everything we have done is biblical. Have we not read it from the Holy Book? Is it not what is written in the Holy Book that we replicated? Or did we do something different?

“Some people witnessed it and they are not happy with us, they say the old man is married to a young child and plenty of other issues on the matter, and I tell them that, the Nungua and Ga culture is absolute and it will never change.

“If we say we would follow the tradition, be it a King or a Chief Priest if we say we would follow the tradition and look for a virgin for them, they should tell me where we can find a virgin in these modern times in Nungua,” he said in Ga in an exclusive interview with Afii TV.

The Nungua Mantse continued “In our current dispensation, most girls above 15 years are no longer virgins. They have all been taken sexually, so if we look around and see a girl who is still a virgin, then she is the best candidate.

“So, the current behaviour of girls these days has warranted this practice, however, it is biblical.”

Do whatever you want, we will support you – Wee smokers in Nungua encourage Gborbu Wulomo

Some residents of the Nungua community have openly declared their backing for the recent marriage of 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, to a minor, Naa Yoomo Ayemuede.

In a widely circulated video, one of the youths expressed, “Gborbu Wulomo, all I want to tell you is that do what your soul pleases. Don’t be afraid, we smokers are behind you.”

Gborbu Wulomo faced backlash when a video of the marriage ceremony surfaced online, which took place on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Nungua.

According to the Spokesperson of Gborbu Wulomo the young girl would not be required to fulfill marital responsibilities “until the fourth ritual is performed.

He added that the “Wulomo will not have any sexual relations with her as he will have to wait until she is mature or she reaches the legal age of marriage and childbirth”.

Meanwhile, the Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG) strongly condemned the marriage ceremony, emphasizing that it violates the Children’s Act of 1998, which prohibits forcing a child under the age of 18 into marriage.

However, the GaDangme Council clarified that the relationship between the traditional Ga priest and the 12-year-old girl is a betrothal, not a marriage.

The Council expressed support for Gborbu Wulomo’s stance, citing initial reports that suggested another ceremony awaited the girl to prepare her for procreation.

“Important to clarify that the traditional ruler has stated that the relationship with the underage girl is a betrothal and not a marriage. This distinction to us has altered the legal implications.”

“We are inclined to side with the Gborbu Wulomo since the original reportage made the point that there was another ceremony that awaited the girl to purify and prepare her for procreation.”

Traditional practices must be in line with the law – NCCE to Nungua Traditional Council

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged the Nungua Traditional Council to reassess its traditional customs to ensure their alignment with the laws of the nation.

Expressing apprehension over the situation, the commission stressed that “cultural practices that defy legality and the constitution have no place in our democratic society.”

The NCCE additionally pointed out that for more than a century, “our courts have consistently ruled that traditional customs contradicting natural justice, fairness, and ethical conscience are invalidated.”

“The NCCE urges the Nungua Traditional Council to review its traditional practices to bring them in line with the laws and 1992 Constitution of Ghana, and to refrain from actions that may have a negative impact on the youth of Nungua.”

Moreover, the commission reminded the Traditional Council of the provisions of the Children’s Act, Act 560 of 1998, Section 13 (1&2), which stipulates that “The minimum age for marriage of any kind shall be eighteen years.”

“It is also worth pointing out that the same section of the Children’s Act says that “No person shall force a child (a) to be betrothed; (b) to be the subject of a dowry transaction; or (c) to be married,” the statement added.

NCCE concluded by urging the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Department of Social Welfare to “ensure that the best interests of the child are protected and child marriages are removed from our customary practices.”

“We married 12-year-old-girl to ward off other men” – 63-year-old Gborbu Wulormo replies critics

Amidst the growing uproar over the marriage of a 12-year-old girl to a 63-year-old priest at the Gborbu Wulormo shrine in Nungua, the shrine has come forward to defend its actions.

The controversy surrounding the marriage ceremony, which took place on March 20, has sparked outrage, with calls for the arrest of the traditional priest.

According to the Gborbu Wulormo shrine, the marriage was conducted to protect the girl, Naa Yomo Ayemuade, from potential suitors. The shrine claims that she is still in school and does not reside with the Gborbu Wulormo, and the marriage was initiated to safeguard her until she reaches maturity.

Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, a spokesperson for the temple, explained that Naa Yomo Ayemuade has a specific role to fulfil within the shrine that necessitates her being a virgin. Therefore, the public marriage ceremony was conducted to ensure that she remains chaste and is not approached by other men.

He clarified that the choice of Naa Yomo Ayemuade as a bride was part of a spiritual exercise that began six years ago. She is believed to be a reincarnation of a woman who lived over 300 years ago and has returned to fulfil sacred rituals within the shrine.

The temple spokesperson addressed the criticism surrounding the event, stating that Naa Yomo Ayemuade has been attending school and will continue her education until she is mature enough to make decisions about her relationships.

He emphasised that no sexual relations would occur between Naa Yomo Ayemuade and the Gborbu Wulormo until a fourth ritual is performed or until she reaches the legal age of marriage and childbirth.

Despite the shrine’s explanations, controversy persists, with many condemning the marriage as a violation of human rights. Critics argue that the emphasis on female virginity perpetuates harmful stereotypes about female sexuality, while others question the age gap between the girl and t

An Okada rider narrowly avoided a mob attack after inadvertently striking and killing a White man’s dog at the Nungua Coco Beach on Sunday morning (February 11, 2024).

The incident unfolded as a group of motorcyclists gathered at the beach, a customary practice for showcasing their riding abilities. In the midst of their activities, one rider, traveling at high speed, collided with one of three dogs present, resulting in the animal’s immediate demise.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the rider managed to evade the anger of the bystanders who had congregated, speculating on the potential repercussions had the victim been a beach goer instead.

According to reports from EIB Network Journalist, Murtala Inusah, who was present at the scene, officers from the Nungua District Headquarters arrived to investigate the incident and retrieve the motorbike after the dog’s owner filed a report.

Witnesses observed a woman, accompanying the distraught owner of the deceased dog, shedding tears uncontrollably as she mourned the loss of the pet. Eventually, the owner removed the dog’s body from the scene for burial.

  • Don’t ignore ruling of Supreme Court – Nungua chiefs to empire builders

Don’t ignore ruling of Supreme Court – Nungua chiefs to empire builders

In a significant legal decision, the Supreme Court of Ghana has upheld the ownership rights of the Nungua Stool over the disputed Adjiringanor/Borteyman Lands, concluding a prolonged legal dispute initiated by Empire Builders Ltd, which had laid claim to a substantial portion of the land.

This dispute traces its origins back to 1999 when Empire Builders filed a lawsuit against Top Kings Enterprise Ltd, seeking a declaration of title to a 456.25-acre parcel of land in Adjiringanor-North, Accra. Empire Builders also sought general damages for trespass, a perpetual injunction against interference with their land, and the annulment of Top Kings’ land certificate.

The legal battle persisted with Empire Builders appealing to both the Court of Appeal and, ultimately, the Supreme Court. However, in the final judgment, the Supreme Court found no substantial basis for an appellate intervention with the trial High Court’s findings and upheld the ownership rights of the Nungua Stool.

The Supreme Court emphasized that Empire Builders failed to substantiate their title to the land, and there was compelling evidence supporting the Nungua Stool’s claim as the rightful owner.

The court also noted that the Nungua Stool had been granting leases to its subjects, and the Government of the Gold Coast had acquired land from the Nungua Stool in the 1940s.

Subsequently, Empire Builders pursued a separate lawsuit at the Adenta High Court, which was also dismissed. In response to this, the Paramount Chief of Nungua Traditional Area issued a stern warning to encroachers, urging them to cease their actions immediately.

The Paramount Chief emphasized that individuals or groups encroaching on the Borteyman Lands should anticipate legal repercussions. However, those who had legitimately acquired leases from the Nungua Stool were encouraged to approach the palace with their documents for verification.

The Nungua Stool further announced plans for a comprehensive exercise, potentially involving the removal of illegal structures on the disputed land. Homeowners were assured of their safety and promised “fatherly care.”

This protracted legal battle, spanning over two decades, has conclusively established the Nungua Stool as the rightful owner of the Adjiringanor/Borteyman Lands. Encroachers and those who may have been misled by previous claims have received a clear and urgent warning to rectify their positions.

“On this note, as the Paramount Chief of Nungua Traditional Area and the occupant of the Nungua Stool, I’m sounding a warning to the unscrupulous encroachers, being individuals or group of individuals on the Borteyman Lands to desist from their actions immediately before they face the full rigors’ of the law. Those who think they have legitimately acquired the lease from the Nungua Stool should report to the palace with their document in no time for authentication.
