Two alleged criminals dead after police shootout in Offinso

A shootout between a gang of robbers and the police at Mankranso, Ashanti Region, has resulted in the deaths of two suspected criminals. The deceased were pronounced dead on arrival at Bekwai Municipal Hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries from the incident. Efforts are underway to apprehend the other accomplices involved in the unfortunate incident.

The shootout was instigated after the police invaded the hideout of robbers in search of one wanted suspect, Osman Majid Abdul Sadik, alias Cross, who is known for several robberies and killings in the Mankranso area.

This development comes barely two weeks after eight police officers sustained injuries following a gunfire exchange between masked men at Sampa in the Bono Region on Sunday afternoon, October 5.

A police officer was earlier reported to have lost his life as a result of the incident. The clash also left a police vehicle destroyed, caused hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis in commercial losses, and destroyed essential goods.

Tensions between rival groups in the township are believed to have led to the incident. In a recent development, an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region left an Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), Rafiq Mohammed, dead, and another officer, AICOII Oppong Daniel, injured.

AICOII Oppong Daniel was reported to be receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the incident.

While details of the attack remain unclear, reports suggest that the incident took place at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3. However, AK-47 shell casings used by the attackers during the operation have been retrieved by the joint response team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the GIS.

In recent years, the Police Service has made significant progress in tackling robberies and prosecuting offenders. In September, the Ghana Police Service arrested ten individuals and shot three others dead in its efforts to crack down on a series of violent rural bank robberies across the country. Authorities allege that the 15-member gang has been behind a series of robberies in the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions.

On Sunday, September 14, at 3:30 am, the ring invaded the Saint Martin’s De Porres Cooperative Credit Union with pump-action guns and AK-47 rifles. They escaped the premises with cash after holding the security guard and his wife hostage.

Briefing the media on Wednesday, September 24, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the police recovered a large cache of weapons, vehicles, and valuables following the operation.

One of their AK-47 rifles has been traced to one Corporal Francis Adu Yaw of the Tepa District. The said police officer was killed on November 29, 2024, by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Goaso highway.

The items seized included three AK-47 assault rifles; one single-barrel gun with one AAA round; seven pump-action guns with 96 rounds of AAA ammunition; three Bruni pistols with 40 rounds of ammunition; one M&P pistol with four rounds of ammunition; cash amounting to GH±18,845, $104, 190 Liberian dollars, ₩5,800, and CFA 31,000; a quantity of assorted Ghanaian coins; six vehicles; four motorbikes; and several mobile phones and pieces of jewellery.

According to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the gang’s operations were successfully undercovered after six months of sustained intelligence operations.
“Through sustained intelligence operations, the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled the notorious criminal syndicate who have been behind several robberies in various regions of the country,” she stated.

In August this year, Service announced the retrieval of items used by a gang of armed men during a gold shop robbery at Mpohor in the Western Region over the weekend.

Weapons, ammunition, clothing, and other materials were among the exhibits. According to a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 19, the police stated that the retrieved items would aid in the ongoing investigation into the case.

On Sunday, August 17, one person was arrested in connection with the robbery. The police explained that the retrieval was made possible after officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

Currently, the police are on a manhunt for eight others allegedly involved in the heist. They added that two men who were standing by the vehicle fled upon seeing the approaching patrol team.

According to the police, a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, and other materials believed to have been used during the robbery.

“The Ghana Police Service, in its ongoing investigation into the Mpohor gold shop robbery case, has recovered weapons, ammunition, clothing items and some other exhibits linked to the case. As part of intensified anti-robbery patrols, officers from the Kuntanase District in the Ashanti Region intercepted a suspicious white Toyota Sienta near the Aputuoagya–Bekwai road.

“Two men who were standing by the vehicle fled into the bush upon seeing the approaching police patrol team. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each, additional packets of ammunition, cowrie shells, a Huawei smartphone, identity documents, and some clothing items.

“A careful examination of the recovered exhibits against the CCTV footage of the Mpohor robbery revealed a striking resemblance between the clothing items (hooded tops) and the Wellington boots that were used during the robbery. The recovery of these items marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation and manhunt for the suspects,” parts of the statement read.

On July 30, a shootout between suspected armed robbers and police officers at Atebubu in the Bono East Region led to the death of two suspects.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the patrol team encountered a robbery attack on commuters along the Atebubu Highway. The suspects opened fire on the officers upon sighting them. Those struck during the exchange were rushed to a hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival, while others escaped into nearby bushes.

A search of the scene led to the retrieval of a shotgun loaded with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete. Intensive efforts are still underway to apprehend the fugitives, police confirmed.

On July 15, an intelligence-led operation by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) foiled a robbery attempt by five armed men targeting a foreign national at Cantonments. Police received credible intelligence that the men were lodging at a hotel in Labadi.

While en route in a Toyota Yaris vehicle, the suspects opened fire on a police team after detecting surveillance. An officer sustained gunshot wounds, and in the ensuing shootout, two suspects died after being rushed to the Ghana Police Hospital.

The injured officer, who suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and legs, has been hospitalized and is responding to treatment. Police retrieved two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, live cartridges, three mobile phones, talismans, and other items from the scene.

Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act states that a person who commits robbery commits a first-degree felony. Per Section 150, “a person who steals a thing commits robbery (a) if in, and for the purpose of stealing the thing, that person uses force or causes harm to any other person, or (b) if that person uses a threat or criminal assault or harm to any other person, with intent to prevent or overcome the resistance of the other person to the stealing of the thing.”

Section 124 of the Criminal Offenses Act also indicates that a person who steals commits a second-degree felony. Where the court that finds a person guilty of stealing is satisfied that, on not less than two previous occasions, the accused was found guilty of stealing, the court shall order that the whole or a part of the term of imprisonment imposed shall be spent in productive hard labour.

A person subjected to such an order is disqualified from election to Parliament or a District Assembly within the meaning of the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), for up to five years. Productive hard labour refers to labour in a state farm, state factory, or any other public co-operative or collective enterprise specified by the Minister.

Police efforts in combating robberyIn July, the Police secured a conviction in a four-year-old armed robbery case that occurred in Atonsu, Kuwait, Kumasi. The Kumasi Circuit Court sentenced two individuals to 15 years imprisonment for their role in the violent incident. The convicts, Abass Kasim (26) and Daniel Morro, alias “China” (25), were part of a gang of five that attacked a resident in Atonsu Kuwait on July 31, 2021, around 2:30 a.m.

The gang, wielding a pistol and cutlasses, shot the victim in the abdomen, inflicted multiple cutlass wounds, and robbed him of valuables including an iPhone 11 worth GHS 5,500, a Samsung phone worth GHS 500, two Apple Watches valued at GHS 3,000, two ladies’ handbags, jewelry, $600, and an unspecified amount of Ghana cedis.

Following investigations, Abass Kasim was arrested on August 12, 2021. During interrogation, he confessed and led police to arrest Daniel Morro. A pistol used in the attack was later retrieved.

On August 19, 2021, the suspects were arraigned before Kumasi Circuit Court 4 and remanded into custody after pleading not guilty. They reappeared on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, when they were convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each on charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, unlawful entry, abetment of crime, and possession of firearms without authority.

The sentences are to run concurrently. They have since been transferred to the Central Prisons in Kumasi. Meanwhile, three accomplices remain at large.

The police also reported another success after an armed robber, Paul Avortide, was sentenced to 19 years with hard labour for robbery. The 25-year-old, on May 21 at about 4:00 a.m., attacked a pregnant Nigerian woman, Ogechi Chidiebere, at Tsikpota near New Housing, Ho.

Armed with a machete, he robbed her of GHS 3,000 and a Tecno Spark 30c phone valued at GHS 2,500 as she made her way to antenatal care.

On June 19, police arrested Harmony Nbonu at Ho Main Market with the stolen phone. He confessed that Avortide had sold it to him for GHS 850. A coordinated operation led to Avortide’s arrest at Matse, a suburb of Ho, as he attempted to flee.

After investigations, Avortide was charged with robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, while Nbonu was charged with Dishonestly Receiving under Section 146. They were arraigned before Ho Circuit Court on Tuesday, July 1. Avortide pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 19 years in prison, while Nbonu was acquitted and discharged.

Meanwhile, three individuals suspected in a robbery at Nyanikrom near Shama Junction on Wednesday, July 9, were apprehended. They are Francis Mensah, alias Francis Kwaw (34), Ebenezer Cofie (32), and Samuel Bentum (35). The Western Regional Police Command arrested them following targeted surveillance based on credible intelligence.

Police revealed that the suspects, armed with insider information, planned to rob company officials returning from a bank in Takoradi with salary funds. On the said day, the suspects ambushed the company vehicle near Unique School Junction at Nyanikrom. They broke the vehicle’s window and made away with the cash. A swift police response led to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of GHS 149,500.

The suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations. However, the company’s driver, Maxwell Kofi Yeboah, alleged to have conspired with them, is at large and being pursued.

“The Western Regional Police Command assures the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all perpetrators to justice,” the police said.

Despite these successes, the Police Service continues to suffer casualties in its fight against armed robbery. Several officers have lost their lives while on duty, though the exact number remains unclear.

One such incident occurred in September 2024, when an officer was ambushed and killed by armed robbers at Kwame Peprakrom in the Central Region. In response, the government introduced a GHS 50,000 insurance scheme for officers who lose their lives while on duty.Meanwhile, the Police has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring security, law, and order across the country.

  • I handled Offinso chieftaincy dispute with truth and fairness – Otumfuo

I handled Offinso chieftaincy dispute with truth and fairness – Otumfuo

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reaffirmed his position as the ultimate adjudicator of chieftaincy disputes within Asanteman.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace, he made it clear that the authority to appoint individuals to royal seats in Asanteman rests solely with him.

During a subtle reference to a faction involved in the Offinso chieftaincy conflict, Otumfuo Osei Tutu revealed that the faction’s leader had initially accepted his jurisdiction and presented the case to him. However, dissatisfied with the outcome, they sought alternative judgments.

Otumfuo asserted that his decision on the Offinso chieftaincy matter was rooted in veracity and fairness, adhering to customary laws.

“Regarding Offinso, I handled the case with truth and fairness, in line with our customary laws. When they were contesting the case, it was brought to me, but now you are contesting my ruling. You can take it wherever you want, and they will tell you to bring the case to the Asantehene. Kingship isn’t about money; it’s about truth, love, and lineage. If the seat belongs to you but you lack the financial resources, the kingship seat will take care of you,” he is wuoted to have said.

This statement follows a challenge to the newly appointed Offinsohene by the family of Dr. Kofi Koduah (KK) Sarpong, the ex-CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.

Reportedly, Dr. KK Sarpong’s family, whose bid for the Offinsohene title was declined by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, along with certain members of Offinso’s royal lineage, petitioned the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs to question the legitimacy of Nana Dwamena Akenten II.

A committee, led by Essumagyahene Nana Okyere Kwasi Ntiamuah and including Kumawuhene Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Koduah and Kuntanasehene, was formed by the House of Chiefs to deliberate on the issue on June 15, 2024.

The committee has postponed the hearing to July 19, 2024, as many stakeholders have not yet addressed the concerns outlined in the petition.

Additionally, it was noted that several chiefs and traditional authorities implicated in the petition are still awaiting formal notice, which is essential for them to provide their responses.

3 killed in Offinso-Anyinasusu road crash, scores injured

At least three people were killed and several others injured in an accident at Anyinasusu in the Offinso South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, May 21, shortly after 11 p.m., involving a Yutong bus traveling from Kumasi to Garu and a Rhino vehicle.

The three fatalities were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ibrahim Yogo, the Assemblyman for Anyinasusu, confirmed the incident to the media, attributing the accident to the absence of speed bumps on the road. He stated that speed bumps could have prompted drivers to reduce their speed at the location, potentially preventing the accident.

Mr. Yogo also reported that the bodies of the deceased have been transported to a nearby hospital for preservation and identification. The survivors of the accident are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

“The speeding bus embarked on an overtaking, colliding with the truck which was carrying mangoes at the time. The three victims were discovered dead during a rescue mission while the others survived with various degrees of injury.”

“They are currently receiving treatment at the St. Patrick’s Government Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have also been deposited at the same hospital for preservation and identification,” Mr Yogo narrated.

“The accident occurred in a neighbouring town close to my electoral area. Our road in recent times has now become a death trap due to a lack of speed ramps. And so, we plead with authorities to build speed ramps on the adjoining communities to avoid such crashes”, he added.

Offinso Municipal Security Council bars K.K. Sarpong from holding himself as Offinsohene

The Offinso Municipal Security Council in the Ashanti Region has prohibited Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, former boss of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), from claiming the title of Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area.

In efforts to maintain peace in the area, Dr. K.K. Sarpong has been advised against organizing or participating in any public events that suggest he holds the position of a chief.

This decision follows a viral social media video where Dr. Sarpong received greetings from supporters who referred to him as the rightful Offinsohene.

Chairman of the Municipal Security Council, Kingsley Owusu-Appiah has admitted the development is a security concern.

“Yes it is a security concern,” he told Joynews and explained that “So far as we are concerned, the security council is concerned, here we have two palaces. One is at Old Town and the other one is at New Town. K.K. Sarpong cannot go there to sit there as a chief.

“The video circulating, I haven’t seen it. May be he did it at his bedroom because he can’t do it at the open space because we have only one chief,“ Mr. Appiah added.

In a letter dated March 14, 2024, the Offinso Municipal Security Council cautioned Dr. K.K. Sarpong, stating that he would be held responsible for any consequences arising from his proposed familiarisation tour of certain project sites.

The Council has implemented measures to prevent any potential escalation, including the permanent deployment of police personnel from the Formed Police Unit at both the Old and New Palaces to deny Dr. K.K. Sarpong and his associates access to the sites.

“We have only one chief in Offinso and he’s called Nana Dwamena Akenten II. So all these things, like I said, maybe he’s doing it in his bedroom. So here, you know, you’ve been in town. There’s peace here so K.K. Sarpong is not a chief.”

“In Ashanti region, you can’t fight Otumfuo. This is what Otumfuo has said and Otumfuo has allowed Nana Dwamena Akenten to swear and he swore before his sub-chiefs and the sub-chiefs have sworn before him too,” Mr. Owusu-Appiah said.

He continued, “(Dr.) K.K. Sarpong cannot sit in public and claim himself to be a chief. You know, the security council will not allow that for people to go and pay homage.”

Following the passing of Offinsohene, Nana Wiafe Akenten III, the competition for the selection of a new paramount chief for Offinso intensified.

The former GNPC boss, Dr. K.K Sarpong, faced rejection twice by the Asantehene when he was presented as a candidate by the embattled Offinso queenmother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko.

However, the Asantehene later accepted a new candidate who pledged allegiance under the stool name Nana Dwamena Akenten II.

The events leading up to the enstoolment resulted in Nana Serwaa Nyarko losing her chieftaincy after she was destooled by the Asantehene for insubordination.

In a letter dated March 13, 2024, the embattled queenmother informed the Offinso Municipal Chief Executive of Dr. K.K Sarpong’s nomination as the new Omanhene.

Meanwhile, during a meeting of the Offinso Traditional Council on Monday, some members called for the transfer of police personnel, accusing them of compromising security management.

The new Offinsohene, Nana Dwamena Akenten, has cautioned against any actions that disrespect the authority of the Asantehene.

Nana Kwaku Wiafe, the Offinsohene’s linguist, expressed discontent with the conduct of the police in the area. He mentioned that despite the police presence, none of Dr. Sarpong’s supporters who took to the streets without a permit have been arrested.

In a separate development, the Asona-Akonkodiase royal family has pledged allegiance to the new Omanhene while disowning the ex-queen mother, who is a member of the family.

Family spokesperson Akwasi Owusu Afriyie stated that the family is disappointed by the ex-queen mother’s actions, as she abandoned the family to nominate an outsider as her successor.

“She became a queen mother because she is a family member of Akonkodiase family. She rather disowned us because at least, she was given the mandate to choose somebody from any of the two families. We thought that she will choose somebody from us but she didn’t.”

Chieftaincy crisis: Dr KK Sarpong blocked from Offinso tour amidst heightened tensions

Former Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) boss, Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, has been barred from visiting Offinso residents in a familiarization tour amid chieftaincy tensions.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Offinso Municipal Assembly has cautioned against any group actions that could exacerbate the ongoing chieftaincy disagreements.

The municipal office issued this directive through a letter addressed to Dr. Sarpong, who is said to have been chosen by Offinso’s ousted queen mother, Nana Ama Serwah Nyarko, as the Offinsomanhene, the paramount chief of the area.

The deposed queen mother, who was destooled in January 2024, had remained silent until a letter dated March 13, 2024, purportedly under her letterhead, surfaced on social media, claiming to have appointed Dr Sarpong as Offinsomanhene, despite the Asante Kingdom’s overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, having already confirmed Nana Amoako Poku’s appointment and installation as the recognized chief.

In a reply, the MCE directly addressed Dr. Sarpong, acknowledging his intention to commence a familiarization tour in Offinso to declare his alleged appointment, and has urged the postponement of the programme until further notice.

“The Council wish to advise your outfit to rescind your decision and suspend the programme until further notice. Please, if you fail to comply with this directive, you will be held responsible should there be any eventuality,” the letter added.

The decision to destool the queen mother was made by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, after she persistently nominated KK Sarpong as paramount chief despite being advised otherwise.

Pro-KK Sarpong indigenes were seen in a video that circulated last week, acknowledging his appointment and paying homage to him as the Offinsomanhene.

However, Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, has yet to comment on these developments.

Drama in Offinso! Indigenes shun Otumfuo’s choice, pay homage to Dr KK Sarpong

Reports from Offinso in the Ashanti Region indicate that the deposed queen mother is displaying behaviors that suggest she is contesting her removal from office.

Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, despite being officially destooled in January 2024 by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly appointed a new paramount chief for the area.

This action contradicts the current situation where a new chief has already been appointed and sworn in before the Asantehene.

The former queen mother had been engaged in a dispute with the Otumfuo over the selection of a new Offinsomanhene throughout 2023.

She persisted in presenting Dr. KK Sarpong, the former boss of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), despite his rejection by the Otumfuo on three occasions due to his non-royal status in the area.

Following reports of her appointment of Dr. KK Sarpong, a video has surfaced on social media, particularly on Facebook, showing the former GNPC boss receiving homage from individuals believed to be his supporters.

In the video, a group of women can be seen singing praises and paying respects to Dr. KK Sarpong, who is seated on a large chair with his feet propped up on a stool.

Some of the women can be heard expressing their support for Dr. KK Sarpong as the rightful chief, referring to any other claimant as illegitimate.

This event reportedly took place during the current week.

Additionally, GhanaWeb has obtained a letter on the queen mother’s letterhead introducing Dr. KK Sarpong as the paramount chief to the Offinso Municipal Assembly, as well as a letter from the Assembly warning against any procession by the opposing faction.

Earlier in the week, a crowd marched to the former queen mother’s residence chanting for a new chief for the Offinso traditional area. Many of these disgruntled residents advocated for Dr. KK Sarpong to be appointed as chief, as he was initially endorsed by the kingmakers.

Most of these residents, who wore funeral clothes to portray their seriousness and sadness over the claim of ‘no chief in the town’, chanted, “We want our new chief, K.K. Sarpong”.

    Background:

Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong was initially elected by the Ofinso queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, and the other kingmakers to succeed the late Nana Wiafe Akenteng, but he was disqualified by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for not being a royal.

A new chief, Nana Amoako Poku, has since been enstooled by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This occurred after the Kwakwaboa Abusuapanin, Opanin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, assumed the queen’s mother’s responsibility in her absence and presented the new candidate.

During the installation of the new chief, there were rumours that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had destooled the queen mother of Offinso for failing to honour his invitations.

  • I am still Offinso Queenmother – Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko snubs Otumfuo’s destoolment order

I am still Offinso Queenmother – Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko snubs Otumfuo’s destoolment order

Wife of Offinso Manhene, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, who was destooled by the Asantehene, Otumfo Osei Tutu II, has defiantly declared that she is remains the queenmother.

This is contained in a letter purportedly issued by Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko to the Asantehene.

The letter indicated that Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko has also selected Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong as the Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area.

“I, Nana Serwa Nyakoh, Offinso Manhemaa write to notify your high office that in line with Asante custom and pursuant to the Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759), I have nominated Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong as Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area. In accordance with custom, all kings makers have approved my nomination and have accepted customary aseda. Accordingly, Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong is the selected Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area.

“In view of the above, and in line with powers invested in me the Queenmother, and the kingmakers no person has been selected as the paramount chief of the Offinso Traditional Area,” parts of the release added.

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, assigned a crucial task to the recently installed Offinsomanhene, Nana Dwamena Akenten II.

He charged Nana Dwamena Akenten II with the responsibility of seeking a suitable replacement for Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, the incumbent Queen Mother of Offinso.

In his directive, Asantehene emphasized the importance of selecting a candidate capable of fostering smooth collaboration with the newly enstooled Omanhene.

The chosen candidate should demonstrate a willingness to cooperate and promptly respond to summons from the Manhyia Palace, without presenting unfounded excuses.

Traditionally, the presence of an Ohemaa (queenmother) alongside the Manhene is crucial for the smooth functioning of the chieftaincy system.

However, with the destoolment of the queenmother, Offinso finds itself without an Ohemaa.

Robust security presence at as the newly sworn-in Offinsohene drives through town

Offinso Traditional Area recently witnessed the formal induction of a new paramount chief, 68-year-old Nana Amoako Poku, whose stool name was unveiled as Nana Dwamena Akenten II.

In adherence to tradition, the new Offinsohene took the oath before chiefs and the community, followed by a ceremonial drive through the town’s main streets, as captured in a video sighted online.

A robust security presence, comprising police personnel and armed soldiers, accompanied the chief as he waved to the enthusiastic crowd.

Amid cheers from the people, there was a resounding acknowledgment that Nana Dwamena Akenten II was the long-awaited leader they had yearned for. He takes the mantle from Nana Wiafe Akenten, who served as paramount chief from 1946 to 2021.

The formal announcement of the new paramount chief took place during the final Asanteman Council meeting of 2023, presided over by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

This declaration marked the resolution of a protracted dispute, during which Otumfuo rejected the Queen’s preferred candidate on three occasions.

The Queen Mother, unable to nominate a qualified royal for the vacant stool, was absent during the announcement. Instead, the responsibility fell on Kwakwaboa Abusuapanyin, Opanyin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, who introduced Nana Amoako Poku as the new Offinsohene.

Despite three opportunities given to the Queen Mother to nominate a candidate, her choice of Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong, a former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), was contested due to his not hailing from the royal family.

In accordance with Asante tradition, the Abusuapanyin stepped in to nominate a candidate, leading to the introduction of Nana Amoako Poku.

Don’t disobey Asantehene – Kumasi Traditional Council to Offinso chiefs on installing K.K. Sarpong as chief

The Kumasi Traditional Council has issued a stern warning to traditional authorities and residents of Offinso, urging them to respect the directive of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II against the installation of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong (K.K Sarpong) as the paramount Chief of the area.

Since the passing of the Paramount Chief, Nana Wiafe Akenten III, the Offinso Stool has remained vacant. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has reportedly opposed the decision of Offinso traditional authorities to nominate Dr. K.K Sarpong, leading to unrest and disagreements.

The Kumasi Traditional Council has cautioned traditional authorities in the area not to go against Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s stance, as he rejects the nomination of Dr. K.K Sarpong.

Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong (K.K Sarpong)

Akyamfour Asafo Boakye Agyeman Bonsu, the Asafohene, emphasized that Dr. K. K. Sarpong does not have a royal lineage and is not eligible to occupy the stool. They urged Offinso traditional authorities to refrain from obstructing Otumfuo’s efforts to appoint a qualified royal for the Offinso stool.

“Following the death of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, some young men in the Offinso area have been organizing a series of press conferences aimed at undermining the authority of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. We won’t allow that to happen, so we are protecting the image of the golden stool. In October this year, a group known as “Concerned Youth of Offinso” organized a press conference insisting that Dr. K. K Sarpong is the rightful heir to the Offinso throne. These assertions by those groups of people go contrary to the assertion of the Asantehene on the matter. We are therefore seeking to clarify the issue.”

He added, “The Asantehene has therefore asked all families that hold the belief they have relatives who can potentially occupy the position to appear before him on December 18, 2023, for a proper engagement at the Manhyia palace. In the Ashanti Region, people are nominated as chiefs only if they are royals but not because of their financial background. We have come to know that K.K Sarpong is not a royal. We therefore want all stakeholders to follow due process to ensure the rightful person is nominated to bring about the needed development in the area.”

This is a big mistake; stop it – Chief warns Offinsohemaa over public spat with Otumfuo

The ongoing challenge of appointing a new paramount chief for Offinso is reportedly attributed to the involvement of the Queen Mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, according to statements made by Nana Apau Wiafe Ababio Sanwoansan, the paramount chief of the Heman Traditional Area (Hemanhene).

The vacancy in Offinso arises from the nomination and subsequent rejection of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Nana Sanwoansan addressed this issue during a meeting of chiefs in the Asanteman Council, as captured in a video shared by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio on December 13, 2023.

In his remarks, Nana Sanwoansan expressed concerns about the roles played by both the former GNPC boss and the Queen Mother in the protracted saga.

Specifically addressing the queen mother, whom he said is an acquaintance, the Hemanhene said: “Nana Offinsohemaa is also making a big mistake. Offinsohemaa, we have been close friends for 30 years; why are you doing this?

“The youth are misbehaving, and some of them are even performing all kinds of rituals. What are you saying about this? Are you encouraging these things? Stop what you are doing. You can’t be doing this with the Asantehene,” he cautioned.

He also emphasised the position of the Asantehene that KK Sarpong was not a royal and therefore was unfit to be chosen, let alone enstooled, as successor to the late Offinsohene.

He added that the chieftaincy in Offinso cannot be bought with money, as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated months ago.

“KK, you made a donation during the one-week celebration of the late Offinsohene; during the funeral, you donated, and you even signed the book of condolence. If you were part of the royal family, would you be doing all this?

“If you were a royal, would you be signing the book of condolence? Stop what you are doing. We have to tell him the truth for him to stop what he is doing. You can’t be playing with the Asantehene like this,” he said in Twi.

“Even me, the Hemanhene, cannot do this with the Asantehene, what is wrong with you?” he added.

    Background:

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28, 2022, days before his departure to the United States, turned down a request from Offinsohemaa Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko to accept Dr. K. K. Sarpong as her choice to ascend the Offinso stool, telling her to go and do the right thing as demanded by the traditional and customary protocols.

The kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area chose the former GNPC boss to succeed the late Paramount Chief of Offinso, Nana Wiafe Akenten II.

In reaction to this, some youth of Offinso described the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as an autocratic leader who is overstepping his traditional powers in the seeming chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The youth, without mincing words, kicked against Manhyia Palace’s decision that the kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area should bring a new person to succeed the late paramount chief of Offinso.

At a press conference, the concerned members of Offinso Youth said, “Offinso has taken note that the Asantehene has taken advantage of the respect our queen mother has for him, therefore over-exercising his powers on our queen mother and making him powerless.

“We can say emphatically that Otumfuo has no power to destool or enstool any paramount chief and he should allow Offinso Hemaa to do her work.””

Love triangle as cause of ‘tension’ between Otumfuo and Dr KK Sarpong claims pop up

Some young people from Offinso in the Ashanti Region have quashed claims that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, holds a personal grudge against Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, former CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), who has been nominated as the new Omanhene of Offinso.

The claims suggest that Otumfuo and Dr Sarpong reportedly had an affair with the same woman in the past, and that was the reason why Otumfuo had rejected Dr Sarpong’s nomination by the Queen mother of Offinso, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko Abronoma and some elders.

However, some youth of Offinso in the Ashanti Region have dismissed these claims as false and baseless. They said that there was no evidence or proof to support such allegations, and that they were only meant to tarnish the reputation of both Otumfuo and Dr Sarpong.

The youth, who staged a protest on October 25, 2023, to impress on the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom to accept the nomination of Dr Sarpong, said that they respected Otumfuo’s authority and wisdom, but they also wanted someone who could develop Offinso and represent their interests.

They insisted that Dr Sarpong has a legitimate right to the Offinso stool because he is indeed a royal and an indigene of Offinso who has contributed immensely to the development of the town and the country. They said that he was well qualified and accepted by the majority of the people to be their chief.

They also dismissed Otumfuos alleged assertion that there was a curse that barred Dr Sarpong from becoming Offinsohene. They said that there was no such curse and they had documents to prove it.

They urged Otumfuo to put the unity of Asanteman first and allow them to enstool their chosen chief.

One of the protesters, Kofi Kwarteng from Offinso, said:

“A lot of people are saying it looks like the Asantehene is after Offinso, but all we ask is, in peace we are pleasing with Opemsuo, the overlord of Asante land, excuse me to say, since creation, there hasn’t been any conflict in Offinso, so we plead with him to sit up, because a lot of people are saying he is going after the man.

Many are even alleging that he and KK have had an affair with the same woman in the past. But that is not the case. All we are pleading is that the one Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko has nominated is the only one we at Offinsoman want. The reason we are very serious about this issue is because we have Asante customary arrangements and Asante culture. Excuse me to say, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko Abronoma reflects what our elders say that, there is no one who will catch a carpenter ant and put it in their cloth. About 18 royals contested for this seat, yet he is the only one the Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko chose. Otumfuo Osei Tutu says there are some curses there. There is a document out which proves that, there is nothing like that there. He also says many people say, Dr Sarpong is not from Offinso, there is a document from the Offinso state book that testifies, that he is indeed a royal.”

The demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, late Paramount Chief of Offinso has left a vacuum which has led to a litigation over who becomes his successor.

The controversy revolves around the fact that Otumfuo rejected Dr Sarpong’s nomination as the next Paramount Chief of Offinso last year, and reiterated his stance at his Asantemen court sitting on October 2, 2023.

He accused the Queen mother and some elders of Offinso of trying to subvert tradition and undermine his authority.

He warned them not to sell land or install a new chief without his approval. He said that he would never allow them to cause the downfall of Offinso.

According to Otumfuo, it was wrong for the Queen mother to present Dr Sarpong as a candidate by virtue of royal bloodline without consideration for history and tradition.

Offinso Chieftaincy dispute: We are highly disappointed in you! – Elders tell Otumfuo

Elders of Offinso have expressed their disappointment in Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over his interference in who becomes the next Offinsohene.

The demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, late Paramount Chief of Offinso has left a vacuum which has led to a litigation over who becomes his successor.

A former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr K. K. Sarpong, who was selected by the Queen Mother of Offinso with the support of some elders has been rejected by Otumfuo.

According to Otumfuo, it is rather wrong for the queen mother to present K. K. Sarpong as a candidate by virtue of royal bloodline while history and tradition tell otherwise.

Otumfuo has thus warned Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko and the elders of Offinso to put forth their candidate through the appropriate channel or risk having him rejected permanently.

But the Otumfuo’s declaration has not sat well with the Kingmakers of Offinso.

Opanyin Akwasi Afriyie, who engaged the press said “Offinso is highly disappointed in Manhyia over how the pending Chieftaincy dispute is being resolved by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.”

“Offinso has noticed that Asantehene has taken advantage of the respect our Queen Mother has for him and therefore overexercising his powers on our Queen to harass and make her powerless,” he added.

Opanyin Akwasi Afriyie indicated that there were 18 contestants for the Offinsohene role and the Queen Mother finally settled on Dr K. K. Sarpong.

According to him, the kingmakers unanimously accepted the nominee in good faith, stressing that “there was nothing like an objection from kingmakers.”

He therefore told the Asantehene to back off as he, “Otumfuo has no power to enstool or destool any Omanhene” and “should allow the Offinsohemaa and her kingmakers to do their work as customs demand.”

Manhyia is infringing on our rights! – Offinso elders

Offinso’s enraged youth and elders have accused His Royal Majesty, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of violating their rights by rejecting the Queen Mother’s candidate for the vacant Offinso stool following the death of Offinso Nana Wiafe Akenten III in 2019.

Addressing the press on October 24, 2023, during a protest against Otumfuo’s stance on the matter, the clan head of Bretuo read out a statement expressing their disappointment and discontent over how the Asantehene was handling the chieftaincy disputes surrounding the Offinso stool.

He said, “Manhyia wants to abuse the rights of Offinso; hence, I’m here to read out the content of this letter I have here with me.

“Offinsoman is highly disappointed in Manhyia over how the pending chif dispute is being resolved by his royal majesty, Asantehene”.

On their part, the Queen Mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, per customs, has presented a viable candidate, subject to the approval of all Offinso kingmakers but it appears Otumfuo wants to abuse the respect  their queen mother has for Otumfuo.

“Offinso has noticed that Otumfuo is taking undue advantage of the respect our queen mother has for him and therefore exercising his powers over our queen mother to harass and make her powerless.

“There were 18 contestants and the queen mother chose her possible 3 and finally settled on Dr KK Sarpong. The kingmakers unanimously accepted the nominee; if the kingmakers had rejected the nominee, the queenmother would not have presented it. We repeat that there is nothing like an objection from the queen-makers.

Customs were made and there was aseda nsa  to the kingmakers, namely Akyeamehene, Gyasehene,Kontihene, Nifahene, Ankobeahene,Adontenehene, Akyeame group, and Asonahene, as customs demand”.

They went on to charge the Asantehene to step aside and allow the Offinso quenmother and her entourage to do their job, as he has no right to “enstool or destool any Omahene”.

“We can state emphatically that Otumfuo has no power to enstool or destool any Omahene and should allow the Offinso hemaa and  her kingmakers to do their job as custom demands.”

Meanwhile, even though it appears many of the Offinso natives support the queenmothers and candidate KK Sarpong, others  also agree with Otumfuo’s assertion that  the queenmother and elders of Offinso had taken bribes from Dr. Sarpong and were trying to sell the stool to him.

Otumfuo also warned them to stop their illegal activities and cooperate with him to resolve the issue amicably .

He clarified that he is extending his tolerance towards the queenmother primarily due to her familial ties and the memory of his late mother, the Asantehemaa.

  • Stop abusing your powers, you have no right to destool or enstool any Omanhene – Manhyia youth to Otumfuo

Stop abusing your powers, you have no right to destool or enstool any Omanhene – Manhyia youth to Otumfuo

Concerned Youth of Offinso, a collective that recently staged protests against the continuous dismissal of Dr. KK Sarpong’s nomination as Offinsohene by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced strong concerns over what they perceive as an excessive exercise of authority by Manhyia on their leader.

During a press conference held in the area, the group asserted that the rejection of the nominee chosen by the Offinso kingmakers effectively amounts to harassment of their queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko. She oversees the selection process, and they believe this rejection diminishes her authority to carry out her responsibilities.

“Offinso is highly disappointed in how the pending chieftaincy dispute is being resolved by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“Offinso has taken notice that Asantehene is taking advantage of the respect that our queen mother has for him and therefore overexercising his powers on our queen mother to harass and make her powerless,” part of their statement read.

The youth stated that 18 contenders were penned down for the vacant stool and were whittled down to three and finally, KK Sarpong was chosen as a successor to the late Offinsohene.

“The kingmakers unanimously accepted the nominee in good faith. If the kingmakers had rejected the nominee, the queen mother would not have an option, and we repeat that there was nothing like an objection from our kingmakers,” they added.

According to them, necessary customs, traditions and aseda nsa (drink of thanks) was given to the relevant authorities in that respect, only for the nomination to be rejected by Manhyia.

“We can state emphatically that Otumfuo has no power to enstool or destool any Omanhene and should allow the Offinso Hemaa and kingmakers to do their work,” they charged.

They rejected the often-cited reason for the rejection, stating that there was no spell cast on the Ahyiemu Royal family and that other reports had dispelled the same, yet the same “fabricated lies” are being used to block KK Sarpong.

    Otumfuo’s warning to Offinso Hemaa

According to Otumfuo, he would never countenance any actions on the part of the queen and the elders that will undermine the tradition of Asanteman when it comes to the election and selection of chiefs.

“No one can arrogate powers that do not exist to themselves. None of the elders have the right to sell land when there is no Offinsohene, specifically when it is the Offinsohene who must sign off the sale.

“There is no such power. You are to take charge until a new chief is installed and then account for your stewardship.

“So be very careful in Offinso. I am very aware of all the things you’re doing at Offinso. You’re friends with Pitin Abontengdomhene and you have recorded a tape
I am very aware of your plot, that you will go ahead and install a new chief when I travel by Monday.

“Offinso Hemaa, you are aware of this, be very careful
I would never allow you to cause the downfall of Offinso,” Otumfuo stated through his linguists in an audiotape of his Asantemen court sitting shared by Royal Palace Multimedia.

The quest for a new Offinsohene

The demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, late Paramount Chief of Offinso has left a vacuum which has led to a litigation over who becomes his successor.

A former GNPC CEO, Dr K. K. Sarpong, was selected by the Queen Mother of Offinso with the support of some elders has been rejected by Otumfuo.

MP laments alarming rate of students abandoning school for Sakawa in Offinso

Member of Parliament representing the Offinso South Constituency, Isaac Yaw Opoku, has voiced concern about the growing reputation of the town for engaging in internet-based ritual fraud, commonly referred to as ‘Sakawa‘.

The MP has noted that the incidents of young individuals from the region participating in “Sakawa” are consistently increasing, a trend he finds deeply concerning.

“The rate at which the youth in some instances, students are abandoning school for cyber fraud, popularly called ‘Sakawa,’ has reached alarming proportions in our constituency.”

The disturbing trend is that it is common to find pupils engaging in these unfortunate acts during school hours and these school children are being influenced by the ostentatious lifestyles of adults engaged in cyber fraud,” he said.

Isaac Yaw Opoku said this when he visited various ongoing developmental projects he had lobbied for the constituency.

Speaking to OTEC News Reporter, Simon Opoku Afriyie after the visit, the legislature revealed that a series of meetings with security officers in Municipality on how to solve the issue have proved futile, adding that they will continue to engage stakeholders in the area and find solutions to the problem.

He used the opportunity to call on the youth to work hard and shun away from quick money like this sakawa activities.

He said he feared that this trend would tarnish the good name of Offinso and is demanding swift action.

    Develop projects

Isaac Yaw Opoku however emphasised that he will continue to lobby for more projects in the constituency to enhance the living standards of his people.

He noted that every community within his constituency has had its share and seen a developmental project in the last two and half years he took the mantle from the former MP.

He however expressed worry about deplorable ‘road networks in the constituency, adding that, the bad road network has barreled this developmental project for the good people of Offinso South to see.

Isaac Yaw Opoku urged the government to as a matter of urgency fix the deplorable road which is affecting the economic activities of the indigenes and those in adjoining communities.
