“6th March demonstration loading” – Oliver Vormawor gives govt 3 months ultimatum to Stop Galamsey

Youth activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has announced plans for a “Stop Galamsey” protest on March 6, 2025.

This follows reports of illegal mining activities in the Tano Anwia forest. Barker-Vormawor expressed his outrage, stating that such actions should not be allowed in Ghana.

Through a series of social media posts, he warned the government that they have three months to put an end to these illegal mining operations.

His post read “Erastus Asare Donkor says as we speak, there are groups still inside the Tano Anwia forest reserve mining illegally and further degrading the forest. This pic was taken this morning!

“It’s been nearly 5months since we were arrested for protesting Galamsey. It seems to me that this existential threat must bring us back to the streets.”

He added that “These are people who are more likely than not operating with some of the over 2000 licenses issued by the former Regime.

“These licenses must be revoked! Our approach to irresponsible mining cannot include allowing people to do ‘legally’ the exact things they did ‘illegally.’ #StopGalamsey Demonstration now on 6th March. Notice served!”

The youth activist, who is also a legal practitioner, also stated that “President Dey Revoke Previous Appointments. All that is good. So why is he not also revoking the 2000 mining licenses Mampam gave his cronies.

“We cannot allow people to do legally the exact things they did illegally, under cover of shoddy licenses. The President has 3 months ultimatum exactly! 6th March Demonstration Loading.”

Oliver Vormawor to release alleged audio recording with Minister at 5pm today

Activist and convener of Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has left Ghanaians in suspense by announcing his intention to release an alleged recorded audiotape of a conversation he had with a specific minister.

This minister invited him to return to Ghana from London for meetings with both himself and the Finance Minister.

The lead member of the #FixTheCountry social movement revealed this in a tweet shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, October 28, 2024.

According to him, the said minister assured him of his safety upon his trip to Ghana if he agreed.

“Sounds like a good time to drop an audio when some Minister be offered to fly me down to Ghana from London for meetings with him and the Finance Minister. As an added bonus, he said nothing will happen to me, if I come to Ghana. What say you? 5pm?” he said.

Today’s announcement of another audio recording is not the first instance in which he has indicated having recorded discussions with ministers.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor has previously addressed the existence of recorded conversations involving government ministers.

In September 2023, he asserted that he possessed a recording of a meeting with the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, during which he claimed a $1 million bribe was offered to him in exchange for stopping his activism.

He promised to release this audio to unveil the alleged bribery attempt.

In response to this, the Ministry of National Security issued a statement refuting the allegations made by Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

While they confirmed that meetings took place with the #FixTheCountry conveners, they categorically denied any claims of monetary offers or promises of appointments to cease their activism.

In response to these claims, Kan-Dapaah has initiated a defamation lawsuit against Barker-Vormawor, seeking damages amounting to GH₵10 million.

The High Court has granted Barker-Vormawor a two-week period to respond to the lawsuit.

  • Ama Governor offers her first oral advocacy in court in defence of #OccupyJulorbi ‘detainees’

Ama Governor offers her first oral advocacy in court in defence of #OccupyJulorbi ‘detainees’

Lawyer Elorm Ababio, also known as Ama Governor, gave her first oral advocacy in court in defence of protesters detained by the police during a September 2023 demonstration.

Recently called to the Bar after two previous denials, Ms. Ababio appeared before an Accra High Court this week on behalf of the activist group Democracy Hub and 34 other individuals.

In April 2024, Democracy Hub and 33 other applicants filed a motion to relist their human rights case against the Ghana Police Service, which had been struck out by the High Court (Human Rights Division) due to a lack of prosecution.

The plaintiffs sued the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General, alleging unlawful arrest, torture, and detention of protesters during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration in September 2023.

The motion to relist followed an April 9, 2024, decision by Justice Barbara Tetteh-Charway, who struck out the case after both plaintiffs and respondents failed to appear.

Democracy Hub shared news of Ama Governor’s court representation on their X handle.

“We are happy to announce that Yesterday (June 19) Ms Elorm Ababio @Ama_governor appeared for Democracy Hub and 34 other protestors, who were arrested during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

“This was her first oral advocacy since Ama was called to the Bar. Ama herself was at the protest, and gave an interview which was relied on to further deny her a call to the Bar for the second time

“We are happy that Ama did not forget her fellow protesters at #OccupyJulorbiHouse and came back to represent them. Shows the purity of her spirit!” their post read in part.
